A baby they could have saved in Kinshasa. 00:00:08.67\00:00:11.54 This quarter's 13th Sabbath Offering projects 00:00:11.57\00:00:14.81 and children worshiping in a shipping container. 00:00:14.84\00:00:18.38 All this and much more coming up next. 00:00:18.41\00:00:20.72 Hello and welcome to Mission 360. 00:00:54.02\00:00:55.92 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:55.95\00:00:57.35 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:57.39\00:00:58.89 from the campus of Andrews University 00:00:58.92\00:01:01.22 in Michigan in the United States. 00:01:01.26\00:01:03.43 And directly behind me, you can see this building, 00:01:03.46\00:01:06.39 which is the Adventist Theological Seminary. 00:01:06.43\00:01:09.50 And in this building, 00:01:09.53\00:01:10.87 you'll also find the Department of World Mission. 00:01:10.90\00:01:13.94 And here students are trained in missiological principles 00:01:13.97\00:01:18.17 that will help us be more effective 00:01:18.21\00:01:20.28 in working cross culturally. 00:01:20.31\00:01:22.41 And that's what Andrews University 00:01:22.44\00:01:24.28 is all about, to equip people, young people, 00:01:24.31\00:01:27.15 older people to be more effective 00:01:27.18\00:01:29.62 in mission and service. 00:01:29.65\00:01:31.05 And we'll be learning more about Andrews on this program. 00:01:31.09\00:01:33.82 But first up, let's travel to the Congo 00:01:33.86\00:01:36.69 and the mighty city of Kinshasa 00:01:36.73\00:01:39.29 to see an Adventist clinic in action. 00:01:39.33\00:01:42.63 Each day at work, 00:01:42.66\00:01:44.00 Badibanga makes sure 00:01:44.03\00:01:45.37 the Kinshasa Adventist Clinic is kept safe. 00:01:45.40\00:01:48.14 He works as a security guard for this compound 00:01:48.17\00:01:50.54 in the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital city. 00:01:50.57\00:01:54.04 When he started working here, 00:01:54.08\00:01:55.41 he didn't know much about Adventist beliefs 00:01:55.44\00:01:57.75 except what he heard coming from the church 00:01:57.78\00:01:59.41 also located on the compound 00:01:59.45\00:02:01.08 as they held evening meetings throughout the week. 00:02:01.12\00:02:04.39 A few years ago, 00:02:04.42\00:02:05.75 the clinic staff started a small church plant. 00:02:05.79\00:02:08.49 Many members are former patients, 00:02:08.52\00:02:10.76 doctors who came to know Jesus at the clinic 00:02:10.79\00:02:13.26 and people from the community. 00:02:13.29\00:02:15.46 On Sabbath, the church is full of praise 00:02:15.50\00:02:18.03 and worship through testimonies and music. 00:02:18.07\00:02:20.44 The choir writes and performs original songs. 00:02:20.47\00:02:24.24 One day the church pastor invited Badibanga 00:02:24.27\00:02:26.71 to attend an upcoming campaign. 00:02:26.74\00:02:28.84 So Badibanga decided to see what it was all about. 00:02:28.88\00:02:31.78 After the meetings, 00:02:31.81\00:02:33.15 his mind was overwhelmed with information. 00:02:33.18\00:02:35.52 He was motivated to study the Bible further. 00:02:35.55\00:02:38.02 And before long, 00:02:38.05\00:02:39.39 Badibanga accepted the Adventist message 00:02:39.42\00:02:41.76 and invited Jesus into his heart. 00:02:41.79\00:02:46.36 For me the difference in my life is that 00:02:46.39\00:02:48.43 I'm able to pray and see the answers from God. 00:02:48.46\00:02:53.00 So that's something that has changed in my life. 00:02:53.03\00:02:58.37 The Kinshasa Adventist Clinic 00:02:58.41\00:03:00.31 aims to meet the needs of people 00:03:00.34\00:03:02.08 in the community through Christ's method. 00:03:02.11\00:03:04.61 The clinic meets physical needs 00:03:04.65\00:03:06.35 with a team of doctors and nurses 00:03:06.38\00:03:08.38 while staff assessed patients' spiritual needs. 00:03:08.42\00:03:12.29 People come to this clinic with a number of symptoms 00:03:12.32\00:03:14.86 and illnesses ranging 00:03:14.89\00:03:16.42 from malaria to pregnancy complications. 00:03:16.46\00:03:20.80 Frank and Nikki rushed into the clinic 00:03:20.83\00:03:22.86 when Nikki was bleeding for unknown reasons. 00:03:22.90\00:03:25.40 The expectant parents knew their baby wasn't due yet. 00:03:25.43\00:03:28.57 Doctors and nurses tried everything 00:03:28.60\00:03:30.91 but they couldn't figure out what was wrong. 00:03:30.94\00:03:33.11 The medical staff gathered around Nikki and prayed 00:03:33.14\00:03:35.34 for the Holy Spirit's intervention. 00:03:35.38\00:03:37.61 Right after the prayer, one of the doctors 00:03:37.65\00:03:39.78 was able to detect the problem and rushed her to surgery. 00:03:39.81\00:03:43.18 But because of a lack of equipment, 00:03:43.22\00:03:45.22 they began surgery without anesthesia. 00:03:45.25\00:03:47.49 They had to sterilize the instruments 00:03:47.52\00:03:49.16 with rubbing alcohol in a small flame. 00:03:49.19\00:03:51.66 Unfortunately, they lost the baby 00:03:51.69\00:03:53.83 during surgery and almost lost Nikki too. 00:03:53.86\00:03:57.40 It was a miracle that she survived the incident. 00:03:57.43\00:04:00.14 Doctors prayed over her again. 00:04:00.17\00:04:01.87 And we're certain that 00:04:01.90\00:04:03.24 she would get an infection in the coming weeks. 00:04:03.27\00:04:05.11 But after 10 days, there was no sign of infection 00:04:05.14\00:04:08.48 and Nikki made a fast recovery. 00:04:08.51\00:04:12.21 As I'm leaving today, 00:04:12.25\00:04:13.68 I'm thankful to God because He assisted me. 00:04:13.72\00:04:16.79 He came to secure me. 00:04:16.82\00:04:18.55 I did not think that 00:04:18.59\00:04:19.92 I would be able to talk to people about my story. 00:04:19.95\00:04:23.86 The impact of this event changed their lives. 00:04:23.89\00:04:26.66 Frank and Nikki are now Adventist members 00:04:26.70\00:04:28.70 and attend the church 00:04:28.73\00:04:30.07 on the clinic's compound every week. 00:04:30.10\00:04:32.30 If the clinic had the proper equipment, 00:04:32.33\00:04:34.34 it's possible the baby could have survived too. 00:04:34.37\00:04:37.31 The staff is qualified to provide top quality service 00:04:37.34\00:04:40.38 but unfortunately, they need instruments, 00:04:40.41\00:04:42.58 beds and general materials 00:04:42.61\00:04:44.65 to vastly improve the services they provide, 00:04:44.68\00:04:47.22 especially for expectant mothers. 00:04:47.25\00:04:50.59 I'm asking to make a call to the world church. 00:04:50.62\00:04:53.56 I want you to tell them 00:04:53.59\00:04:54.92 that this clinic needs their help 00:04:54.96\00:04:56.69 in terms of equipment. 00:04:56.73\00:04:58.29 We need a lot of help. 00:04:58.33\00:04:59.66 And if we can have 00:04:59.69\00:05:01.03 the equipment required in this clinic, 00:05:01.06\00:05:02.96 we will be the best clinic in Kinshasa. 00:05:03.00\00:05:05.63 Doctors, nurses and the staff 00:05:05.67\00:05:07.90 at the Kinshasa Adventist Clinic 00:05:07.94\00:05:09.90 pray for the Lord to use them to further His mission. 00:05:09.94\00:05:12.87 This quarter, a portion of your 13th Sabbath Offering 00:05:12.91\00:05:16.18 will help expand and improve the clinic's health services 00:05:16.21\00:05:19.41 here in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 00:05:19.45\00:05:22.72 Please pray and consider 00:05:22.75\00:05:24.35 how you can contribute to this cause. 00:05:24.39\00:05:26.86 Thank you for supporting the 13th Sabbath offering. 00:05:26.89\00:05:30.03 We're on the campus of Andrews University 00:05:38.00\00:05:40.20 and my guest is a graduate student, 00:05:40.24\00:05:42.70 Daniel Duffis. 00:05:42.74\00:05:44.07 And Daniel, among other things, 00:05:44.11\00:05:46.21 is doing a dissertation on urban ministry. 00:05:46.24\00:05:49.11 And it's good to have you join us today, Daniel. 00:05:49.14\00:05:51.65 It's a pleasure to be here. 00:05:51.68\00:05:53.01 Now, we talked a little bit before this interview 00:05:53.05\00:05:54.75 and you have a fascinating background. 00:05:54.78\00:05:56.69 Give us a brief overview of where you began 00:05:56.72\00:05:59.42 and what you've been doing? 00:05:59.45\00:06:00.79 Right, right. 00:06:00.82\00:06:02.16 So my parents are from the island of San Andres. 00:06:02.19\00:06:05.06 It is a Colombian island off the coast of Nicaragua. 00:06:05.09\00:06:08.43 On the island they speak English and Spanish. 00:06:08.46\00:06:10.47 And so my dad was a pastor there, 00:06:10.50\00:06:12.97 and I was born in that island. 00:06:13.00\00:06:14.37 But when I was about one year of age, 00:06:14.40\00:06:16.50 they were called to be missionaries 00:06:16.54\00:06:17.94 on the island of Curacao in the Dutch Caribbean. 00:06:17.97\00:06:20.74 So I grew up speaking English at home, 00:06:20.78\00:06:23.18 up here meant to the local language 00:06:23.21\00:06:24.75 there in Curacao and also studied in Dutch. 00:06:24.78\00:06:27.55 And so I've always had a very unique background 00:06:27.58\00:06:30.42 in terms of being able to connect 00:06:30.45\00:06:31.92 with people from different cultures. 00:06:31.95\00:06:33.76 And there on the island, 00:06:33.79\00:06:35.12 we worked a lot with Venezuelan refugees 00:06:35.16\00:06:38.23 that were coming since the island is close 00:06:38.26\00:06:40.40 to the coast of Venezuela. 00:06:40.43\00:06:42.03 After this, I moved to the US after 18 years, 00:06:42.06\00:06:46.67 and studied graphic design. 00:06:46.70\00:06:48.54 But after two years, I felt a bit of an emptiness, 00:06:48.57\00:06:51.77 something was calling me 00:06:51.81\00:06:53.14 and I decided to become a minister. 00:06:53.17\00:06:55.88 So I was, I went to Puerto Rico to study. 00:06:55.91\00:06:58.18 There I learned Spanish, 00:06:58.21\00:06:59.98 worked as a pastor there as well. 00:07:00.02\00:07:01.52 And now I'm here in the United States. 00:07:01.55\00:07:03.05 Fantastic. 00:07:03.08\00:07:04.79 Now, what made you decide to do a PhD here at Andrews? 00:07:04.82\00:07:09.82 Well, I never thought I would do a PhD. 00:07:09.86\00:07:14.20 But one of my professors approached me, 00:07:14.23\00:07:15.96 Dr. Kuhn, when I was finishing my MDiv. 00:07:16.00\00:07:18.83 And he told me that 00:07:18.87\00:07:20.30 I had a fascinating background, almost, 00:07:20.34\00:07:22.67 I was a person that was easily able to adapt 00:07:22.70\00:07:26.04 to different cultures. 00:07:26.07\00:07:27.41 And so he told me that 00:07:27.44\00:07:28.78 it will be good for me to look into doing a PhD. 00:07:28.81\00:07:30.55 In that way, 00:07:30.58\00:07:31.91 I will be able to help the church 00:07:31.95\00:07:33.28 in a very unique way. 00:07:33.31\00:07:34.65 So that is what got me to doing my PhD. 00:07:34.68\00:07:37.05 Interesting. 00:07:37.09\00:07:38.59 Now, you're not just studying at the moment, 00:07:38.62\00:07:41.02 you're also helping pastor a church. 00:07:41.06\00:07:43.06 Tell me about that? Right. 00:07:43.09\00:07:44.89 So right now I work 00:07:44.93\00:07:47.43 with a Korean community in Queens, in New York, 00:07:47.46\00:07:51.47 and I work with second and third generations 00:07:51.50\00:07:53.74 Koreans in an urban setting. 00:07:53.77\00:07:56.14 And so every week I fly there. 00:07:56.17\00:07:58.34 That's another story I have to tell. 00:07:58.37\00:08:00.31 But I go there every weekend 00:08:00.34\00:08:01.74 so that I can help them to learn 00:08:01.78\00:08:03.14 how to work with postmodern individuals 00:08:03.18\00:08:05.01 there in that urban setting, yeah. 00:08:05.05\00:08:07.78 It must be a fascinating ministry 00:08:07.82\00:08:11.12 because these young people are sort of like 00:08:11.15\00:08:14.16 one foot in their traditional Korean culture 00:08:14.19\00:08:18.39 then the other foot they're here in America 00:08:18.43\00:08:19.86 in an urban setting? 00:08:19.89\00:08:21.56 Many challenges for these young people? 00:08:21.60\00:08:22.93 Yes. 00:08:22.96\00:08:24.83 As myself, I grew up as a church culture kid. 00:08:24.87\00:08:27.50 So I understand that 00:08:27.54\00:08:29.00 as a Korean American here in America, 00:08:29.04\00:08:32.57 the Koreans often struggle with their identity. 00:08:32.61\00:08:35.94 Koreans are very collectivist in their thinking. 00:08:35.98\00:08:39.21 They oftentimes try to do things together as a family. 00:08:39.25\00:08:43.65 But the American culture is very individualistic, right? 00:08:43.69\00:08:46.65 And so when Korean American 00:08:46.69\00:08:48.79 tries to stay loyal to their family, 00:08:48.82\00:08:51.19 but at the same time, 00:08:51.23\00:08:52.79 feel as part of the community here in America, 00:08:52.83\00:08:55.30 it brings a lot of conflict within themselves 00:08:55.33\00:08:58.50 of which culture they're going to portray 00:08:58.53\00:09:00.64 as they are living. 00:09:00.67\00:09:02.00 So I do see that a lot 00:09:02.04\00:09:03.37 when I'm working with my friends 00:09:03.41\00:09:04.74 there in that community. 00:09:04.77\00:09:06.11 Yeah. 00:09:06.14\00:09:07.48 Now, the dissertation that you're doing 00:09:07.51\00:09:08.88 for your PhD ties into urban ministry. 00:09:08.91\00:09:11.31 Tell me about that? 00:09:11.35\00:09:12.78 So I'm looking at consumerism, 00:09:12.81\00:09:15.42 and how that impacts spirituality 00:09:15.45\00:09:17.19 in urban settings. 00:09:17.22\00:09:18.55 Consumerism can be defined as a way of life 00:09:18.59\00:09:22.19 where one tries to identify oneself 00:09:22.22\00:09:26.19 with the possessions that one has. 00:09:26.23\00:09:28.60 And so, in the church we're seeing right now 00:09:28.63\00:09:31.77 that many individuals, they often go to church, 00:09:31.80\00:09:34.47 not because they are faithful to God 00:09:34.50\00:09:36.27 or committed to the religion that they're following. 00:09:36.30\00:09:38.87 But because going to church gives them 00:09:38.91\00:09:40.81 a particular identity within the community 00:09:40.84\00:09:43.45 where they are working with. 00:09:43.48\00:09:44.85 And so being part of a particular religion 00:09:44.88\00:09:47.02 doesn't necessarily 00:09:47.05\00:09:50.59 push you to commit to the religion 00:09:50.62\00:09:52.35 but you commit to what people think about you. 00:09:52.39\00:09:55.06 And so if that particular religion is not 00:09:55.09\00:09:58.89 or is not very famous anymore or looked as high class, 00:09:58.93\00:10:03.37 one can just walk away 00:10:03.40\00:10:04.73 and find another religion to form one's identity. 00:10:04.77\00:10:07.07 I think that is fascinating. 00:10:07.10\00:10:08.44 Interesting. Interesting. Yeah. 00:10:08.47\00:10:11.07 So when you look at your... 00:10:11.11\00:10:13.14 How long have you been here on the campus now? 00:10:13.17\00:10:16.24 I studied my MDiv for three years. 00:10:16.28\00:10:18.71 And now I've been back for two years, so about five. 00:10:18.75\00:10:21.45 So in your study, 00:10:21.48\00:10:23.92 how do you see this enriching yourself 00:10:23.95\00:10:26.35 and equipping you for ministry? 00:10:26.39\00:10:28.82 So here on campus, you are often 00:10:28.86\00:10:32.83 connected with people from different nationalities, 00:10:32.86\00:10:35.63 different countries. 00:10:35.66\00:10:37.07 And so you do see how their worldview 00:10:37.10\00:10:39.83 affects the way that they experience reality. 00:10:39.87\00:10:43.24 And so being here with my classmates 00:10:43.27\00:10:44.67 has really helped me to be able to look at myself 00:10:44.71\00:10:47.84 and see the biases that I have of looking at the world. 00:10:47.88\00:10:51.45 But it also helps me to think more academically 00:10:51.48\00:10:54.98 and critically about the subjects 00:10:55.02\00:10:57.02 that I'm studying. 00:10:57.05\00:10:58.39 Oftentimes in mission 00:10:58.42\00:10:59.75 we tend to romanticize what we do. 00:10:59.79\00:11:02.52 We think it's going to be 00:11:02.56\00:11:03.89 a beautiful experience going out 00:11:03.93\00:11:05.26 and confronting a new culture. 00:11:05.29\00:11:07.50 But I think being here has really helped me 00:11:07.53\00:11:09.73 to look at the difficulties that you have as well, 00:11:09.76\00:11:13.10 and how you can tackle that in a way that's healthy 00:11:13.13\00:11:16.10 and that glorifies God in the process. 00:11:16.14\00:11:18.17 Yes, I think it's wonderful how you're combining your study 00:11:18.21\00:11:21.34 with still practical work in ministry every week. 00:11:21.38\00:11:24.58 So when you finish here, do you have any goals, 00:11:24.61\00:11:27.95 anything that you feel that you would like to do? 00:11:27.98\00:11:30.42 I do want to dedicate my life as a long term missionary. 00:11:30.45\00:11:34.92 And so I'm still waiting for the exact place 00:11:34.96\00:11:37.96 or part of the world where God is calling me. 00:11:37.99\00:11:40.46 I am studying other languages 00:11:40.50\00:11:41.86 as well as French and Arabic to get myself prepared. 00:11:41.90\00:11:45.23 So the six languages you speak is not sufficient. 00:11:45.27\00:11:47.54 No. Okay. 00:11:47.57\00:11:49.27 I want to be as efficient as possible in God's work. 00:11:49.30\00:11:52.11 And so I don't have a particular place. 00:11:52.14\00:11:54.41 But I do know I want to work in urban settings. 00:11:54.44\00:11:58.18 I'm very interested in refugee ministries as well. 00:11:58.21\00:12:01.72 So any place that God calls me I'm prepared to work 00:12:01.75\00:12:04.29 and to be helped to the church and, 00:12:04.32\00:12:07.69 and also to help other people learn about Jesus 00:12:07.72\00:12:10.43 in the process, yeah. 00:12:10.46\00:12:11.79 Wonderful. 00:12:11.83\00:12:13.16 So for people who are maybe thinking 00:12:13.19\00:12:14.83 about coming to Andrews 00:12:14.86\00:12:16.36 to further their knowledge to equip them better 00:12:16.40\00:12:18.93 for mission, what would you say to them? 00:12:18.97\00:12:21.47 So I would say to them that 00:12:21.50\00:12:24.54 mission needs to be connected to education. 00:12:24.57\00:12:30.05 If we don't value the educational side of 00:12:30.08\00:12:33.65 or the academic side of looking at mission, 00:12:33.68\00:12:35.82 we can often make a lot of mistakes 00:12:35.85\00:12:37.42 when we go out on the field. 00:12:37.45\00:12:39.19 And so educating oneself is actually a form of love 00:12:39.22\00:12:43.39 towards those people that we're trying to reach. 00:12:43.43\00:12:45.86 And so anyone who's thinking about going into mission, 00:12:45.89\00:12:47.93 I think they should consider coming to an academic setting, 00:12:47.96\00:12:51.07 preparing themselves in the best way 00:12:51.10\00:12:52.90 so that they can show the love of Christ 00:12:52.93\00:12:54.70 to the world that's waiting to hear about Him. 00:12:54.74\00:12:56.97 Wonderful. 00:12:57.01\00:12:58.34 Daniel, thank you so much for sharing a little today 00:12:58.37\00:13:00.58 of your experience and God bless. 00:13:00.61\00:13:01.94 Thank you. It was a blessing. 00:13:01.98\00:13:03.48 Our viewers at home, pray for Daniel, 00:13:03.51\00:13:05.48 pray for other students here who are preparing 00:13:05.51\00:13:08.45 for mission, not just theoretically 00:13:08.48\00:13:10.15 but how they can put into practice principles 00:13:10.19\00:13:13.02 that they're learning here. 00:13:13.05\00:13:14.39 We'll be right back after this break. 00:13:14.42\00:13:15.79
