Welcome back to the city of Chicago. 00:00:07.30\00:00:09.40 And behind me you'll see a sculpture by Anish Kapoor, 00:00:09.44\00:00:13.74 which is called Cloud Gate 00:00:13.78\00:00:15.11 but it's more popularly known as The Bean. 00:00:15.14\00:00:18.31 And it's like a magnet drawing tourists 00:00:18.35\00:00:21.02 to take pictures and do funny poses 00:00:21.05\00:00:23.15 and see themselves reflected in this sculpture. 00:00:23.18\00:00:26.25 Hi, there. 00:00:31.36\00:00:32.69 I'm so happy to have you with us today. 00:00:32.73\00:00:34.66 My name is Kleber Goncalves, 00:00:34.70\00:00:36.33 and I'm here in the streets of Madrid 00:00:36.36\00:00:38.27 to introduce you to a friend in an urban missionary. 00:00:38.30\00:00:41.70 This is Jonathan Contero. 00:00:41.74\00:00:43.30 And, Johnny, you mentioned to us 00:00:43.34\00:00:44.91 that a dream brought you to this city. 00:00:44.94\00:00:48.14 Can you share with us a little bit about this dream? 00:00:48.18\00:00:50.35 Yes, when I was raised in church, 00:00:50.38\00:00:54.22 I was feeling that we were unable to reach 00:00:54.25\00:00:57.25 secular people. 00:00:57.29\00:00:58.62 And in 21st century, we still in Spain, 00:00:58.65\00:01:04.89 we don't reach secular and postmodern people, 00:01:04.93\00:01:07.63 and my dream was to plant a church, 00:01:07.66\00:01:10.47 able to reach this kind of people. 00:01:10.50\00:01:12.57 We communicate, that could communicate 00:01:12.60\00:01:14.74 with the secular and postmodern mind. 00:01:14.77\00:01:16.10 Yeah, we have to connect with them. 00:01:16.14\00:01:17.51 What brought you to Madrid? Any specific reason? 00:01:17.54\00:01:21.01 Well, Madrid is the capital of Spain, 00:01:21.04\00:01:23.61 is the largest city, 00:01:23.65\00:01:24.98 actually, 3 million people are living here. 00:01:25.01\00:01:27.58 How large is the country, the whole country? 00:01:27.62\00:01:29.25 The county is like 47 million people. 00:01:29.28\00:01:33.29 In Madrid? 00:01:33.32\00:01:34.66 In Madrid, 3 million living here. 00:01:34.69\00:01:36.39 So it's quite big city to share the gospel. 00:01:36.42\00:01:40.76 And for how long have you been in Madrid 00:01:40.80\00:01:42.26 with this specific project? 00:01:42.30\00:01:43.67 It's for three years now, yeah. 00:01:43.70\00:01:46.03 And during these three years, 00:01:46.07\00:01:48.80 could you share with us some of the challenges 00:01:48.84\00:01:51.14 that you have faced in order to really... 00:01:51.17\00:01:53.88 Yeah, the challenge in the postmodern society, 00:01:53.91\00:01:56.14 they reject organized religion. 00:01:56.18\00:02:00.22 They even reject the idea of God. 00:02:00.25\00:02:02.35 They don't like, yeah, religion and churches, 00:02:02.38\00:02:07.66 they reject all this idea. 00:02:07.69\00:02:10.03 And what are some of the steps that you and your team 00:02:10.06\00:02:12.99 have developed to make friendship with them. 00:02:13.03\00:02:17.00 So build bridges with the community around you? 00:02:17.03\00:02:20.37 While the first step is impact the community 00:02:20.40\00:02:23.54 to live what we preach 00:02:23.57\00:02:25.61 is just impacting the community around us, 00:02:25.64\00:02:29.14 and we invite them to join us 00:02:29.18\00:02:32.41 working for the community for homeless people. 00:02:32.45\00:02:34.92 We go to the hospital, 00:02:34.95\00:02:36.42 we do very hard push into the impact to community. 00:02:36.45\00:02:41.36 When I hear you mentioning that you guys 00:02:41.39\00:02:43.09 go to hospitals 00:02:43.12\00:02:44.46 to do a specific work with children there. 00:02:44.49\00:02:47.26 If I'm not wrong, 00:02:47.30\00:02:49.03 can you go a little bit more specific 00:02:49.06\00:02:50.63 with what you do in the hospital 00:02:50.67\00:02:52.43 in order to really reach out 00:02:52.47\00:02:53.80 to these children and their families? 00:02:53.84\00:02:55.27 In the hospital, we stay with them, 00:02:55.30\00:02:58.51 we play with them, and we spend time with them. 00:02:58.54\00:03:02.38 At the end, I guess people need time, 00:03:02.41\00:03:05.21 quality time and to develop trust 00:03:05.25\00:03:09.05 and we try to spend time, quality time with them. 00:03:09.08\00:03:13.46 What are some of the results 00:03:13.49\00:03:14.82 that are coming out of these community initiatives 00:03:14.86\00:03:17.43 that you have been developing? 00:03:17.46\00:03:19.23 Well, we do a summer camp with sick kids, 00:03:19.26\00:03:24.03 cancer, epilepsy, 00:03:24.07\00:03:25.63 and two girls, 00:03:25.67\00:03:27.54 two of the participants of the summer come, 00:03:27.57\00:03:30.34 two young ladies of 15 years old. 00:03:30.37\00:03:33.07 They are coming to church very often 00:03:33.11\00:03:34.84 because of the summer camp we do. 00:03:34.88\00:03:36.75 That's wonderful. 00:03:36.78\00:03:38.11 And through all these years 00:03:38.15\00:03:39.48 that you've been leading this specific project, 00:03:39.51\00:03:41.85 what are some of the lessons, 00:03:41.88\00:03:43.95 Jonathan, that you have learned that you could share with us? 00:03:43.99\00:03:48.09 Yeah, first lesson is to develop trust 00:03:48.12\00:03:51.26 before the invitation. 00:03:51.29\00:03:52.63 I mean, people need to trust you 00:03:52.66\00:03:55.30 before they go the way you do 00:03:55.33\00:03:58.03 and before going the place you go. 00:03:58.07\00:04:02.00 The second is patience. 00:04:02.04\00:04:04.01 We need to be patient because we are in a rush, 00:04:04.04\00:04:07.38 we're stressed to just to make people 00:04:07.41\00:04:11.61 do a commitment with Jesus very fast, 00:04:11.65\00:04:13.88 and several people need time to make that commitment. 00:04:13.92\00:04:17.95 And throughout this whole wonderful experience 00:04:17.99\00:04:22.36 that you guys are having, 00:04:22.39\00:04:23.73 I heard that many people have been transformed. 00:04:23.76\00:04:26.46 Could you kind of mention 00:04:26.49\00:04:29.43 a situation or a story of somebody? 00:04:29.46\00:04:31.10 Yeah, a guy comes to my mind. 00:04:31.13\00:04:33.90 He's actor and he started with us 00:04:33.94\00:04:36.44 with the project, is step one. 00:04:36.47\00:04:38.77 He did step two, is a small groups. 00:04:38.81\00:04:40.91 He came to my house 00:04:40.94\00:04:42.28 and we studied Bible every week, 00:04:42.31\00:04:44.08 we pray together. 00:04:44.11\00:04:45.45 And the third step, he came to church. 00:04:45.48\00:04:47.82 He was ready to came to church. 00:04:47.85\00:04:49.68 And now he is disciple. 00:04:49.72\00:04:51.85 This been really... 00:04:51.89\00:04:54.76 So he's part of the community? Yeah, yeah. 00:04:54.79\00:04:57.16 What kind of steps are you guys taking to build 00:04:57.19\00:05:00.33 this family kind of attitudes in the community? 00:05:00.36\00:05:05.10 Yeah, we try to teach, 00:05:05.13\00:05:08.90 to pass it on the idea of discipleship. 00:05:08.94\00:05:12.51 We are a family and community, 00:05:12.54\00:05:14.31 we are a family and we work for God. 00:05:14.34\00:05:17.45 We work to one another. We help us one another. 00:05:17.48\00:05:20.55 And we try to change the world. 00:05:20.58\00:05:22.25 So if I hear you correctly, 00:05:22.28\00:05:24.39 church for you guys is not a building 00:05:24.42\00:05:26.65 or four walls in which you meet once a week? 00:05:26.69\00:05:28.72 Not at all. 00:05:28.76\00:05:30.09 Church, we are church, the persons, 00:05:30.13\00:05:32.36 every one of us is church together 00:05:32.39\00:05:34.96 when we are together. 00:05:35.00\00:05:36.33 So your goal is to build the church in the community? 00:05:36.36\00:05:38.73 Yeah, yeah, no matter the building, 00:05:38.77\00:05:40.94 the church is every one of us and what we do. 00:05:40.97\00:05:44.17 So yeah, 00:05:44.21\00:05:45.54 the idea is to kind of bring this vision, 00:05:45.57\00:05:47.84 this dream to other young people, 00:05:47.88\00:05:49.74 other pastors that could take this 00:05:49.78\00:05:51.75 to maybe other cities in Spain? 00:05:51.78\00:05:53.18 Yeah, hopefully. Or maybe out of Spain? 00:05:53.21\00:05:55.72 Yeah, hopefully it will be a great miracle 00:05:55.75\00:05:58.79 and a great challenge as well. 00:05:58.82\00:06:00.46 It is our sincere prayer that, Jonathan, 00:06:00.49\00:06:02.29 that Lord will continue to bless you, your team, 00:06:02.32\00:06:05.93 the community that you are building 00:06:05.96\00:06:07.30 such a way that you're going to be 00:06:07.33\00:06:09.66 powerful instruments in His hands. 00:06:09.70\00:06:12.43 Thank you so much for joining us. 00:06:12.47\00:06:14.24 And thank you for having us in your home. 00:06:14.27\00:06:16.67 And we just pray that you also understand 00:06:16.71\00:06:18.84 that God has appealed to you, 00:06:18.87\00:06:20.54 that you also has a part to fulfill in His mission. 00:06:20.58\00:06:23.45 All the best. God bless you. 00:06:23.48\00:06:25.81 Next up, we travel to Thailand, 00:06:25.85\00:06:27.82 and we visit a unique mission project. 00:06:27.85\00:06:30.89 It's a climbing wall. 00:06:30.92\00:06:32.25 The thing that I really like is seeing people 00:06:49.60\00:06:52.01 do something that they think they can't do 00:06:52.04\00:06:55.04 or trying something, 00:06:55.08\00:06:56.54 coming, facing a challenge 00:06:56.58\00:06:58.28 and then pushing through and continuing to try. 00:06:58.31\00:07:00.45 To me, it gives me courage to see that people 00:07:06.25\00:07:08.46 can be willing to do something. 00:07:08.49\00:07:10.23 We see people who have never climbed before. 00:07:10.26\00:07:11.93 They're terrified of it. They're scared of heights. 00:07:11.96\00:07:14.13 And we say, "No, you can do," and we give them encouragement 00:07:14.16\00:07:16.46 and we try to help 00:07:16.50\00:07:17.83 give them some kind of motivation. 00:07:17.87\00:07:19.43 And they go for it, and they do it. 00:07:19.47\00:07:20.80 And at the end, 00:07:20.84\00:07:22.17 they're so excited that they did it. 00:07:22.20\00:07:23.54 You know 00:07:23.57\00:07:24.91 that's just really fulfilling to me. 00:07:24.94\00:07:26.27 My wife Jessica and I 00:07:31.31\00:07:32.65 most recently lived in Washington State in the USA. 00:07:32.68\00:07:35.45 And we just felt like God was calling us 00:07:35.48\00:07:37.12 somewhere else and we prayed about it 00:07:37.15\00:07:38.65 and through prayer and study, God brought us to this place. 00:07:38.69\00:07:42.12 Bangkok is a giant city. 00:07:45.96\00:07:48.66 I think there's like 12 million people 00:07:48.70\00:07:50.07 that live here. 00:07:50.10\00:07:51.43 They say there's 2 million 00:07:51.47\00:07:52.80 that commute into work every day. 00:07:52.83\00:07:54.17 It's very modern. 00:07:54.20\00:07:55.54 It's got a lot of high tech stuff. 00:07:55.57\00:07:56.97 Neither one of us really likes urban settings or the city. 00:07:57.01\00:08:00.44 We much more prefer nature and being outdoors. 00:08:00.48\00:08:03.14 But sometimes you have to give up your desires 00:08:03.18\00:08:05.11 and your wants for what God has. 00:08:05.15\00:08:06.48 So, yeah, He brought us here and it wasn't, 00:08:06.51\00:08:08.35 wouldn't have been our first choice, 00:08:08.38\00:08:09.72 but it's His choice. 00:08:09.75\00:08:11.09 And so that's what we wanted to. 00:08:11.12\00:08:12.45 So F5 Challenge Center 00:08:16.39\00:08:17.86 is a health focused Center of influence 00:08:17.89\00:08:20.83 in Bangkok, Thailand, 00:08:20.86\00:08:22.20 where we're trying to connect with people 00:08:22.23\00:08:24.73 and minister to felt needs 00:08:24.77\00:08:27.24 through the avenue of health and fitness. 00:08:27.27\00:08:29.54 F5 is actually an acronym or there's five F's rather, 00:08:29.57\00:08:32.51 it's faith, fellowship, fitness, fortitude, and fun. 00:08:32.54\00:08:35.71 And those correlate 00:08:35.74\00:08:37.08 with the five aspects of health, the spiritual, 00:08:37.11\00:08:39.31 the mental, the physical, the emotional, and the social. 00:08:39.35\00:08:42.18 It's kind of a holistic, encompassing message of health 00:08:42.22\00:08:46.05 to try and connect with every aspect. 00:08:46.09\00:08:47.82 Depression and suicide rates are really high. 00:08:47.86\00:08:49.99 And so meeting those social and those emotional needs 00:08:50.03\00:08:52.79 are also really important. 00:08:52.83\00:08:55.00 Climbing is very good thing for that. 00:08:55.03\00:08:56.67 Climbing has been shown in studies 00:08:56.70\00:08:58.03 to help with depression in different times, 00:08:58.07\00:08:59.67 things like that. 00:08:59.70\00:09:01.04 We have the climbing gym here where people can come 00:09:01.07\00:09:02.50 and they can try out climbing. 00:09:02.54\00:09:04.14 But also during the times where the weather is good, 00:09:04.17\00:09:06.34 we lead weekly outdoor trips. 00:09:06.37\00:09:07.98 We take people out of this giant city 00:09:08.01\00:09:09.58 where they can go and climb on real rock. 00:09:09.61\00:09:11.58 You know, to be able to see God's creation, 00:09:11.61\00:09:13.45 to be able to see and interact with them in nature. 00:09:13.48\00:09:16.82 And then basically, you're spending eight hours 00:09:16.85\00:09:18.32 with a group of people. 00:09:18.35\00:09:19.69 And it really gives opportunities 00:09:19.72\00:09:21.06 in a social setting, 00:09:21.09\00:09:22.42 just to interact with each other, 00:09:22.46\00:09:23.79 to learn about one another 00:09:23.83\00:09:25.16 and truly build those connections 00:09:25.19\00:09:26.53 that build trust. 00:09:26.56\00:09:27.90 When you're hanging off the side of a cliff, 00:09:27.93\00:09:29.26 26 meters up in the air. 00:09:29.30\00:09:30.63 And the only thing keeping you from falling to death 00:09:30.67\00:09:32.00 is the person below holding on to the rope. 00:09:32.03\00:09:33.60 It really builds trust and community. 00:09:33.64\00:09:35.54 And so, then when they come back down, 00:09:35.57\00:09:37.11 and they're so excited, 00:09:37.14\00:09:38.47 and you know, they're really pumped up, 00:09:38.51\00:09:39.84 you give them a high five, so that was great, 00:09:39.87\00:09:41.21 you know, and then they sit down there 00:09:41.24\00:09:42.58 while they wait for the next few people. 00:09:42.61\00:09:43.95 And you get to talk and interact with them. 00:09:43.98\00:09:45.35 And so you're building that relationship 00:09:45.38\00:09:46.72 in a social setting. 00:09:46.75\00:09:48.65 We've had people talk to us about very personal challenges 00:09:48.68\00:09:50.99 that they're facing, 00:09:51.02\00:09:52.35 maybe when they come into the gym, 00:09:52.39\00:09:53.72 and they're just kind of one on one, 00:09:53.76\00:09:55.09 then they say, you know, 00:09:55.12\00:09:56.46 this is something that's going on. 00:09:56.49\00:09:57.83 And so we found that it really helps build 00:09:57.86\00:09:59.73 a solid relationship rather than something where, 00:09:59.76\00:10:02.16 you know, you see them every once in a while. 00:10:02.20\00:10:03.83 The majority of people are living in cities. 00:10:09.37\00:10:11.27 And often, 00:10:11.31\00:10:12.64 you know, when we first were thinking 00:10:12.67\00:10:14.01 about becoming missionaries, 00:10:14.04\00:10:15.38 we were thinking about on the jungle adventures, 00:10:15.41\00:10:16.75 we were reading Eric B. Hare stories, 00:10:16.78\00:10:18.11 you know, and fighting tigers 00:10:18.15\00:10:19.55 and rogue elephants. 00:10:19.58\00:10:20.92 And then when God called us to Bangkok, 00:10:20.95\00:10:22.42 was like, that's not really a mission field, 00:10:22.45\00:10:24.15 you know, that's a city. 00:10:24.19\00:10:25.52 But yeah, as we thought about it, 00:10:25.55\00:10:26.89 it's like this is a huge mission field. 00:10:26.92\00:10:28.49 And it's where people you know, they don't know, 00:10:28.52\00:10:30.29 and often times they don't care. 00:10:30.33\00:10:31.66 They don't really feel a need. 00:10:31.69\00:10:33.03 They don't feel like they need anything physical. 00:10:33.06\00:10:34.96 But what they fail to understand is that 00:10:35.00\00:10:37.47 they do have emotional needs, they do have social needs, 00:10:37.50\00:10:39.77 they have these things. 00:10:39.80\00:10:41.14 And often times, you don't even know. 00:10:41.17\00:10:42.50 You feel like, "Well, I've got an Audi 00:10:42.54\00:10:44.24 and I got a nice house and I got a girlfriend, 00:10:44.27\00:10:46.27 I don't need anything else." 00:10:46.31\00:10:47.74 But when we connect with them, we're able to share with them 00:10:47.78\00:10:49.84 and build those relationships, you come to understand that 00:10:49.88\00:10:52.58 and you can help you know share 00:10:52.61\00:10:53.95 that there is a need that you have, 00:10:53.98\00:10:55.32 you think that you're filling it 00:10:55.35\00:10:56.69 with all of these things that you have, 00:10:56.72\00:10:58.05 but it's not actually filling it 00:10:58.09\00:10:59.42 and that hole that you feel is actually, 00:10:59.45\00:11:01.79 can be filled with God, 00:11:01.82\00:11:03.26 and He's seeking you 00:11:03.29\00:11:04.83 and actively looking to connect with you there. 00:11:04.86\00:11:07.66 But yeah, working with a group that's, that has everything. 00:11:07.70\00:11:11.40 It takes right more 00:11:11.43\00:11:12.77 so the heart that work towards the heart. 00:11:12.80\00:11:14.74 Well, thank you so much for joining me 00:11:45.23\00:11:46.87 today on Mission 360°. 00:11:46.90\00:11:48.94 And I hope that you've enjoyed 00:11:48.97\00:11:50.31 our 360 degree view of mission around the world. 00:11:50.34\00:11:54.21 But we see so many different creative 00:11:54.24\00:11:55.94 and dedicated ways 00:11:55.98\00:11:57.31 to share the gospel around the world. 00:11:57.35\00:11:58.68 And I want to thank you so much 00:11:58.71\00:12:00.28 for being part of our Adventist Mission Team, 00:12:00.32\00:12:03.22 because whether you pray, 00:12:03.25\00:12:04.89 whether you go, 00:12:04.92\00:12:06.32 whether you give, whatever you do, 00:12:06.35\00:12:08.39 you are part of our Adventist Mission family 00:12:08.42\00:12:10.89 supporting mission. 00:12:10.93\00:12:12.66 I want you to continue to pray 00:12:12.69\00:12:14.03 for our front-line mission workers. 00:12:14.06\00:12:16.80 Well, for Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause. 00:12:16.83\00:12:18.90 And I hope you can join me next time 00:12:18.93\00:12:20.87 right here on Mission 360°. 00:12:20.90\00:12:23.51
