Welcome back to Andrews University. 00:00:12.34\00:00:13.98 And behind me, you'll see the seminary building 00:00:14.01\00:00:16.41 where the Department of World Mission is located 00:00:16.44\00:00:18.35 and there many students 00:00:18.38\00:00:20.35 every year are trained in missiological principles. 00:00:20.38\00:00:23.15 Next up, we travel to Bangkok 00:00:23.18\00:00:24.79 and a unique urban center of influence. 00:00:24.82\00:00:27.46 I'm here in the heart of one of the biggest cities 00:00:37.67\00:00:39.77 of Southeast Asia, Bangkok, Thailand. 00:00:39.80\00:00:42.67 And here we are in a place 00:00:42.70\00:00:44.77 that I'm not that familiar with. 00:00:44.81\00:00:47.34 But Brian here is going to tell us 00:00:47.38\00:00:48.84 about what he's doing here 00:00:48.88\00:00:50.95 and what exactly are we standing by? 00:00:50.98\00:00:53.78 Thanks, Rick. 00:00:53.82\00:00:55.15 So this is actually our climbing facility 00:00:55.18\00:00:57.52 in our gym. 00:00:57.55\00:00:59.45 Here on the fifth floor, 00:00:59.49\00:01:00.82 we have rock climbing where we teach people 00:01:00.86\00:01:03.79 in a more safe environment. 00:01:03.83\00:01:05.53 This is indoor climbing, 00:01:05.56\00:01:06.90 it only goes up about five meters. 00:01:06.93\00:01:08.80 We have very thick mats here that we're standing on. 00:01:08.83\00:01:11.00 So it keeps people safe if they fall off. 00:01:11.03\00:01:13.47 And it gives us an opportunity 00:01:13.50\00:01:14.84 to teach people in a safe environment 00:01:14.87\00:01:16.81 how to do rock climbing. 00:01:16.84\00:01:18.37 It's a fun exercise for the whole body. 00:01:18.41\00:01:22.51 Now, the majority of population in Bangkok is not Christian, 00:01:22.54\00:01:27.88 you know, and you're a Christian here. 00:01:27.92\00:01:29.28 But if we look at these walls, and you have certain principles 00:01:29.32\00:01:32.02 that you teach people on how to get up a wall, 00:01:32.05\00:01:34.36 are their principles that you learn climbing a wall 00:01:34.39\00:01:36.86 that can help people in life? 00:01:36.89\00:01:38.86 Yeah, actually, 00:01:38.89\00:01:40.43 fortitude is actually a really solid one. 00:01:40.46\00:01:42.90 So climbing up indoors specifically, 00:01:42.93\00:01:45.27 you have to only use the holes that are here on the wall. 00:01:45.30\00:01:48.50 And so sometimes that's really hard. 00:01:48.54\00:01:49.87 You, one, might not figure out. 00:01:49.90\00:01:51.84 You look at it and you go, 00:01:51.87\00:01:53.21 "Well, how can I use these couple of holes 00:01:53.24\00:01:54.98 and get up the wall?" 00:01:55.01\00:01:56.34 And so it takes determination and problem solving 00:01:56.38\00:01:58.15 and stick-to-itiveness, not just giving up 00:01:58.18\00:02:00.18 when something gets challenging. 00:02:00.22\00:02:01.98 But then sometimes it's physically challenging 00:02:02.02\00:02:03.85 and so you have to push yourself 00:02:03.89\00:02:05.22 and it's easy to just go, "Well, I just can't do it." 00:02:05.25\00:02:07.22 But that drive to continue and to keep trying 00:02:07.26\00:02:09.92 even when you fail 00:02:09.96\00:02:11.46 is something that's really a solid part 00:02:11.49\00:02:13.26 of what we're trying to help people learn here. 00:02:13.29\00:02:15.60 So can I ask you what brought you here? 00:02:15.63\00:02:17.57 What inspired you to leave home 00:02:17.60\00:02:19.73 and come all the way to Thailand? 00:02:19.77\00:02:22.20 So to come specifically to Thailand, my wife and I, 00:02:22.24\00:02:25.24 we were working in the United States 00:02:25.27\00:02:28.38 for the North Pacific Union Conference 00:02:28.41\00:02:30.05 of the church that we attend. 00:02:30.08\00:02:31.41 And we were just trying to figure out 00:02:31.45\00:02:34.38 what God wanted us to do. 00:02:34.42\00:02:35.75 And we were trying to help people 00:02:35.78\00:02:37.25 specifically with health. 00:02:37.29\00:02:38.95 My wife and I had both, 00:02:38.99\00:02:40.99 you know, had some health issues 00:02:41.02\00:02:42.96 as younger people and through influences 00:02:42.99\00:02:45.43 that we had met through this church, 00:02:45.46\00:02:47.86 we started to improve our health 00:02:47.90\00:02:49.53 and so we wanted to share that with other people. 00:02:49.56\00:02:51.90 And so we actually watched a documentary 00:02:51.93\00:02:53.67 called I Want This City. 00:02:53.70\00:02:55.20 And it was about somebody following around a pastor 00:02:55.24\00:02:58.07 in Bangkok, Thailand. 00:02:58.11\00:02:59.44 And one episode specifically, 00:02:59.47\00:03:00.91 they did a health clinic 00:03:00.94\00:03:03.24 or a free health seminar type thing 00:03:03.28\00:03:05.61 in one of the big malls. 00:03:05.65\00:03:07.52 And I started watching the interviews of the people 00:03:07.55\00:03:09.45 afterwards and the things that they were saying 00:03:09.48\00:03:10.85 they learned, you know, "I learned 00:03:10.89\00:03:12.35 that you're supposed to drink water." 00:03:12.39\00:03:13.76 And I said, "Wow, you know, 00:03:13.79\00:03:15.12 I haven't been breathing correctly my whole life. 00:03:15.16\00:03:17.33 I just take really shallow breaths, 00:03:17.36\00:03:18.69 and I should be breathing deeply." 00:03:18.73\00:03:20.16 So it's really basic stuff. 00:03:20.20\00:03:22.20 And so we started research 00:03:22.23\00:03:23.57 and we found that diabetes at the time 00:03:23.60\00:03:25.30 was the number four killer of Americans. 00:03:25.33\00:03:27.90 And it was 25% higher rate of death here in Thailand. 00:03:27.94\00:03:31.07 And there was very little understanding 00:03:31.11\00:03:32.64 of how to help that naturally 00:03:32.67\00:03:34.88 and as well as heart disease 00:03:34.91\00:03:37.01 and other lifestyle related issues. 00:03:37.05\00:03:38.81 And so we wanted to come and try and help people 00:03:38.85\00:03:41.28 to have understanding 00:03:41.32\00:03:42.65 of how they could take control of those issues in their life 00:03:42.68\00:03:45.19 without needing to use expensive medicines 00:03:45.22\00:03:46.89 or going to the doctor all the time. 00:03:46.92\00:03:49.46 You know, and as we look at climbing walls, 00:03:49.49\00:03:54.00 you know, and that's a health lesson. 00:03:54.03\00:03:56.87 And then you're mingling with people on a daily basis. 00:03:56.90\00:04:01.90 You're also doing other things here. 00:04:01.94\00:04:03.27 I think you're selling bread. 00:04:03.30\00:04:04.67 Did I see that as well? Correct, yeah. 00:04:04.71\00:04:06.47 So is that part of that whole health? 00:04:06.51\00:04:07.84 Yes. 00:04:07.88\00:04:09.21 So we're trying to encompass a holistic health principle. 00:04:09.24\00:04:13.98 A lot of times where we've been, 00:04:14.02\00:04:16.45 a message of health 00:04:16.48\00:04:17.82 would mainly be about nutrition. 00:04:17.85\00:04:19.49 And nutrition is extremely important. 00:04:19.52\00:04:21.72 But exercise is also equally important. 00:04:21.76\00:04:24.73 The reason why we chose rock climbing 00:04:24.76\00:04:26.39 is because as we came here, 00:04:26.43\00:04:27.76 we spent two years in language and culture study, 00:04:27.80\00:04:30.17 trying to understand the people that we were living among. 00:04:30.20\00:04:33.07 And as we talked to them about exercise, 00:04:33.10\00:04:34.64 many of them said, 00:04:34.67\00:04:36.00 "I don't really like to exercise. 00:04:36.04\00:04:37.37 It's hot and it's boring." 00:04:37.41\00:04:39.21 And so we got into rock climbing, 00:04:39.24\00:04:40.84 and we started inviting people to come with us. 00:04:40.88\00:04:43.01 And they saw it as a fun activity. 00:04:43.04\00:04:44.38 They didn't see it as exercise. 00:04:44.41\00:04:45.75 They just said, 00:04:45.78\00:04:47.12 "Well, this is really fun and exciting." 00:04:47.15\00:04:48.48 And actually a couple of months ago, 00:04:48.52\00:04:49.85 we were climbing in here 00:04:49.88\00:04:51.22 and so I put on my heart rate monitor, 00:04:51.25\00:04:52.59 started my watch, just doing training. 00:04:52.62\00:04:55.02 And we climbed for about two hours 00:04:55.06\00:04:56.39 just very light, like I would climb, 00:04:56.42\00:04:57.76 I would wait 10 minutes, climb again. 00:04:57.79\00:04:59.63 And at the end, I turned it off and I said, 00:04:59.66\00:05:01.13 "You know what, we burned 920 calories just now 00:05:01.16\00:05:03.37 and 46% of it was from fat." 00:05:03.40\00:05:05.23 And they said, "No! No, no way! 00:05:05.27\00:05:07.00 We were just having fun. We're just playing." 00:05:07.04\00:05:08.80 And so it was something 00:05:08.84\00:05:10.17 where we're kind of tricking people 00:05:10.21\00:05:11.54 into exercising through a fun activity. 00:05:11.57\00:05:13.88 Yeah, and time passes a lot faster 00:05:13.91\00:05:15.24 when we're having fun. 00:05:15.28\00:05:16.75 And I have to tell you that you're on the fifth floor, 00:05:16.78\00:05:18.48 so when I came up the stairs, I said, 00:05:18.51\00:05:19.85 "Oh, now I know why they call it a climbing facility." 00:05:19.88\00:05:22.72 That's your warm-up. That's my warm up. 00:05:22.75\00:05:24.45 I need to get into a little bit more. 00:05:24.49\00:05:27.66 Can you share a story maybe about somebody 00:05:27.69\00:05:29.62 who's had a positive experience by, you know, 00:05:29.66\00:05:31.96 learning climbing or improving their health 00:05:31.99\00:05:34.26 or something? 00:05:34.30\00:05:35.63 Sure, I can share a couple stories 00:05:35.66\00:05:37.00 if we have time. 00:05:37.03\00:05:38.37 There's one specifically about a young woman named Oak. 00:05:38.40\00:05:41.64 And she... 00:05:41.67\00:05:43.00 We have this climbing facility to teach people as I mentioned, 00:05:43.04\00:05:45.64 we also lead outdoor climbing trips. 00:05:45.67\00:05:48.11 And so we get people out of this giant city. 00:05:48.14\00:05:50.58 They go outside in the mountains, 00:05:50.61\00:05:52.41 you know, the real rocks, trees, 00:05:52.45\00:05:54.38 and it's just a beautiful experience. 00:05:54.42\00:05:55.75 And it gives us more time to connect 00:05:55.78\00:05:57.12 and build relationships connecting with people. 00:05:57.15\00:05:58.99 And so we went on this one group. 00:05:59.02\00:06:00.49 And this young woman named Oak, she came along, 00:06:00.52\00:06:03.12 and she was having fun. 00:06:03.16\00:06:04.49 And we were all climbing. 00:06:04.53\00:06:05.86 We had about 12 people on that trip. 00:06:05.89\00:06:07.23 And so we were doing 00:06:07.26\00:06:08.60 what's called multi-pitch climbing, 00:06:08.63\00:06:09.96 which means we were broken up into a few different groups 00:06:10.00\00:06:11.53 and one group would go up, 00:06:11.57\00:06:12.90 we'd bring the rest of the people up, 00:06:12.93\00:06:14.27 and then that first group would continue on 00:06:14.30\00:06:15.64 and then the next group. 00:06:15.67\00:06:17.01 So we weren't all really together. 00:06:17.04\00:06:18.37 And so I wasn't with her in the group. 00:06:18.41\00:06:21.81 But I helped her with the second part. 00:06:21.84\00:06:23.18 I was doing the ballet section. 00:06:23.21\00:06:25.08 As we finished and we all went down, 00:06:25.11\00:06:28.32 I ended up walking next to her. 00:06:28.35\00:06:29.75 And I said, "So how was it?" 00:06:29.78\00:06:31.12 And she said, "Well, your group said it was going to be easy, 00:06:31.15\00:06:32.55 and it wasn't easy." 00:06:32.59\00:06:33.92 And I said, "But you did it." 00:06:33.96\00:06:35.29 And she said, "No, No, I didn't. 00:06:35.32\00:06:36.66 You pulled me up." 00:06:36.69\00:06:38.03 And I was a little bit surprised and I said, 00:06:38.06\00:06:39.39 "No, no, I didn't pull you up. You climbed up." 00:06:39.43\00:06:40.76 She said, "No, you pulled me up." 00:06:40.80\00:06:42.43 And so what I realized in communicating 00:06:42.46\00:06:44.47 and talking with her a little bit more 00:06:44.50\00:06:45.83 was in her mind, 00:06:45.87\00:06:47.20 she had told herself she couldn't do it. 00:06:47.24\00:06:48.57 And so even though she had done it, 00:06:48.60\00:06:49.94 her mind told her she didn't do it. 00:06:49.97\00:06:51.31 She couldn't have done it, somebody else helped her. 00:06:51.34\00:06:53.14 And so I had a good talk with her 00:06:53.17\00:06:54.51 about the importance of challenges 00:06:54.54\00:06:56.95 and not just doing things you know you can do, 00:06:56.98\00:06:58.85 but actually you have to challenge yourself in life 00:06:58.88\00:07:00.52 so that you can grow and get better at things. 00:07:00.55\00:07:03.55 And so it was really an interesting view 00:07:03.59\00:07:05.72 into how our brain and what we tell ourselves 00:07:05.75\00:07:08.39 actually influences 00:07:08.42\00:07:09.76 what we can do and how we think. 00:07:09.79\00:07:11.59 Yeah, unfortunately, our time is up 00:07:11.63\00:07:13.09 because I'd love to hear more stories. 00:07:13.13\00:07:14.53 It sounds like what you're doing 00:07:14.56\00:07:15.90 is really touching people's lives here. 00:07:15.93\00:07:18.27 And we, as a church, talk about Christ method, 00:07:18.30\00:07:20.67 you know, very often. 00:07:20.70\00:07:22.04 We have a difficult time mingling, 00:07:22.07\00:07:24.17 you know, and reaching people where they really are 00:07:24.21\00:07:26.17 and it's great to see, you know, something like this 00:07:26.21\00:07:28.54 where you are out there, 00:07:28.58\00:07:29.98 meeting people, and affecting their lives 00:07:30.01\00:07:32.25 in a positive way. 00:07:32.28\00:07:33.72 And those are some of the first steps. 00:07:33.75\00:07:36.12 Anyway, thank you very much for talking with us. 00:07:36.15\00:07:39.49 And for you out there, thank you for being with us. 00:07:39.52\00:07:41.56 And we'll go back to Gary. 00:07:41.59\00:07:43.29 Next up, we travel to Kenya 00:07:43.32\00:07:44.99 to visit a Global Mission pioneer 00:07:45.03\00:07:46.90 doing what Global Mission pioneers do, 00:07:46.93\00:07:49.56 planting churches. 00:07:49.60\00:07:50.93 The jeep bumps along the road 00:07:59.01\00:08:00.84 as Kenyan church leaders make their way 00:08:00.88\00:08:02.68 to visit a Global Mission pioneer. 00:08:02.71\00:08:05.21 Driving across Kenya can be a beautiful journey. 00:08:05.25\00:08:08.28 The wildlife, the people, and the landscape, 00:08:08.32\00:08:11.29 all contribute to a fascinating experience, 00:08:11.32\00:08:14.16 although there's always a chance 00:08:14.19\00:08:15.59 of running into a problem. 00:08:15.62\00:08:16.96 But the best part of this journey 00:08:21.66\00:08:23.06 is meeting people like Pioneer Leanous, 00:08:23.10\00:08:26.03 he prayed for God to use him 00:08:26.07\00:08:28.07 and was assigned to work in a town 00:08:28.10\00:08:29.90 where there were no Adventists. 00:08:29.94\00:08:32.04 In time, Leanous helped 00:08:32.07\00:08:33.41 to start a small congregation of believers 00:08:33.44\00:08:35.74 who are now in the process 00:08:35.78\00:08:37.11 of constructing a church of their own. 00:08:37.15\00:08:39.25 Everyone takes part in the construction, 00:08:39.28\00:08:41.12 eager to see the building finished. 00:08:41.15\00:08:43.18 We're going to see one example, Jesus Christ Himself. 00:08:49.82\00:08:53.70 Today's visit with local church leaders 00:08:53.73\00:08:55.73 includes a Bible study and member testimonies. 00:08:55.76\00:08:58.23 David is a dedicated church member 00:09:05.77\00:09:07.78 who was part of the Mau Mau Uprising decades ago. 00:09:07.81\00:09:11.11 Between 1952 and 1964, 00:09:11.15\00:09:13.48 there was a conflict 00:09:13.52\00:09:14.85 between the British and a group of Kenyans. 00:09:14.88\00:09:17.15 Before he became an Adventist, David fought in this conflict. 00:09:17.19\00:09:21.06 As he recalls that time, 00:09:21.09\00:09:22.66 many negative memories resurface. 00:09:22.69\00:09:25.19 But he has since found hope in Jesus. 00:09:25.23\00:09:28.43 He shares how God transformed him 00:09:28.46\00:09:30.37 and brought peace into his life. 00:09:30.40\00:09:32.40 Pioneer Leanous studied with him 00:09:32.43\00:09:34.40 and welcomed him into the budding congregation. 00:09:34.44\00:09:37.51 Other members share both the burdens 00:09:37.54\00:09:39.37 and the joys in their lives. 00:09:39.41\00:09:41.31 As they close the meeting, 00:09:41.34\00:09:42.68 they pray for God to use each person in the room 00:09:42.71\00:09:45.31 for His glory. 00:09:45.35\00:09:46.68 The church's central location in town 00:09:54.92\00:09:56.73 makes it easy for people to see what the church is about. 00:09:56.76\00:09:59.66 Our church here 00:09:59.69\00:10:01.50 is in the middle of the community. 00:10:01.53\00:10:04.40 If you look around, 00:10:04.43\00:10:05.77 it's all surrounded by houses where people live. 00:10:05.80\00:10:09.20 And the idea why we thought we could have a church here 00:10:09.24\00:10:12.11 is because all the people who are around here 00:10:12.14\00:10:15.11 would associate with the church. 00:10:15.14\00:10:17.01 And I know it will bear some fruits. 00:10:17.05\00:10:19.91 As the church was being built, 00:10:19.95\00:10:21.28 one neighbor named Karemera 00:10:21.32\00:10:23.28 saw the congregation's construction challenges 00:10:23.32\00:10:25.89 and offered to store equipment in her home to keep it safe. 00:10:25.92\00:10:29.16 She's happy to help her Adventist neighbors. 00:10:29.19\00:10:31.33 She soon became friends with Pioneer Leanous 00:10:31.36\00:10:33.80 and started Bible studies with him. 00:10:33.83\00:10:36.06 During their visit, the Kenyan church leaders 00:10:36.10\00:10:38.23 get to know the other community members. 00:10:38.27\00:10:40.84 The neighbors share that they like getting 00:10:40.87\00:10:42.40 to know their Adventist neighbors, 00:10:42.44\00:10:44.21 and some would like to visit the church on a future Sabbath. 00:10:44.24\00:10:47.44 Let's pray 00:10:47.48\00:10:48.81 for the small congregation in Kenya, 00:10:48.84\00:10:50.58 pray that their example 00:10:50.61\00:10:51.95 reflects Jesus to their community. 00:10:51.98\00:10:54.58 As Global Mission pioneers around the world 00:10:54.62\00:10:56.58 continue planting churches, 00:10:56.62\00:10:58.25 let's also pray 00:10:58.29\00:10:59.62 for the challenges they may face. 00:10:59.65\00:11:01.39 Thank you for supporting Global Mission, 00:11:01.42\00:11:03.39 making testimonies like these possible. 00:11:03.43\00:11:05.99 Well, thank you so much for joining us 00:11:20.74\00:11:22.94 for today's program 00:11:22.98\00:11:24.31 and I hope that you've been inspired 00:11:24.35\00:11:25.85 and that you've been challenged. 00:11:25.88\00:11:27.68 But what you've seen and heard 00:11:27.72\00:11:29.05 as we've looked at our 360 degree view 00:11:29.08\00:11:31.45 of mission around the world, 00:11:31.49\00:11:33.29 we've seen how 13th Sabbath Offerings 00:11:33.32\00:11:35.02 are making a difference. 00:11:35.06\00:11:36.76 We've seen a unique center of influence 00:11:36.79\00:11:39.39 in Bangkok, Thailand. 00:11:39.43\00:11:41.66 We're seeing how missionaries 00:11:41.70\00:11:43.03 are changing lives in different places. 00:11:43.06\00:11:45.60 And I want to thank you so much 00:11:45.63\00:11:47.37 for your continuing support of Adventist mission 00:11:47.40\00:11:50.91 through your finances, 00:11:50.94\00:11:52.27 through your personal involvement, 00:11:52.31\00:11:54.24 and most importantly, because of your prayers. 00:11:54.28\00:11:57.28 But whether you pray, 00:11:57.31\00:11:58.65 whether you give, whether you go, 00:11:58.68\00:12:00.02 whether you do all three, 00:12:00.05\00:12:01.38 we consider you to be part of our Adventist Mission Team. 00:12:01.42\00:12:03.82 So thank you. 00:12:03.85\00:12:05.25 For Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause, 00:12:05.29\00:12:07.19 and I hope that you can join me next
