A hospital funded by your 13th Sabbath Offerings, 00:00:06.23\00:00:09.44 a unique center of influence in Bangkok, Thailand, 00:00:09.47\00:00:12.74 and a pioneer in Kenya. 00:00:12.77\00:00:14.34 All this and much more coming up next. 00:00:14.38\00:00:17.38 Hello and welcome to Mission 360. 00:00:54.65\00:00:57.05 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:57.09\00:00:58.62 from the campus of Andrews University, 00:00:58.65\00:01:01.46 here in Berrien Springs, Michigan, United States. 00:01:01.49\00:01:04.93 This is a historic campus. 00:01:04.96\00:01:07.13 In fact, its fore bearer, 00:01:07.16\00:01:09.26 The Battle Creek College began in 1874 00:01:09.30\00:01:13.70 and moved to this campus here in Berrien Springs in 1901 00:01:13.74\00:01:18.07 and became known as Emmanuel Missionary College. 00:01:18.11\00:01:21.78 And this is actually the oldest Adventist college 00:01:21.81\00:01:24.05 in the world. 00:01:24.08\00:01:25.41 And it's been a landmark of Adventist education, 00:01:25.45\00:01:28.15 which of course is now the second largest 00:01:28.18\00:01:31.35 Christian educational system in the world. 00:01:31.39\00:01:34.72 In late 1950s, there were plans made 00:01:34.76\00:01:37.69 for the Adventist Theological Seminary 00:01:37.73\00:01:39.56 to join with the Emmanuel Missionary College, 00:01:39.59\00:01:41.83 and that happened in 1960 when it moved to this campus 00:01:41.86\00:01:45.27 and it became known as Andrews University. 00:01:45.30\00:01:47.94 It's a long history, it's a rich history, 00:01:47.97\00:01:49.87 but it's made what this place is today, 00:01:49.90\00:01:52.81 a center for training people for mission and for service. 00:01:52.84\00:01:57.11 We'll be looking more 00:01:57.15\00:01:58.48 at what's happening here at Andrews 00:01:58.51\00:02:00.18 and mission around the world today. 00:02:00.22\00:02:02.05 But first up, let's travel to Tanzania 00:02:02.08\00:02:04.82 to meet a woman who has been touched 00:02:04.85\00:02:07.29 through the ministry of a hospital 00:02:07.32\00:02:09.22 that was supported by your 13th Sabbath Offerings. 00:02:09.26\00:02:12.19 Adventists in Mwanza, Tanzania sold cows, goats, 00:02:16.50\00:02:20.64 and other possessions to build a new medical facility 00:02:20.67\00:02:23.94 to replace the small overcrowded Adventist clinic. 00:02:23.97\00:02:27.21 Oh, we have a lack of space for admission of patient. 00:02:27.24\00:02:32.28 That's why we try to build this facility here. 00:02:32.31\00:02:36.32 Knowing this was a big dream, in 2013, 00:02:36.35\00:02:39.22 they asked for your help through prayers and donations 00:02:39.25\00:02:42.62 to the 13th Sabbath Offering. 00:02:42.66\00:02:44.96 We appealed them to support us in offering, in prayers, 00:02:44.99\00:02:50.63 in order to complete this project. 00:02:50.67\00:02:53.07 I think when we are dealing with patients, 00:02:53.10\00:02:55.10 people may see Jesus through these projects, 00:02:55.14\00:02:57.84 through these services that we are doing. 00:02:57.87\00:03:00.58 Your generous giving to the mission offering 00:03:06.31\00:03:08.48 helped build a beautiful medical facility 00:03:08.52\00:03:10.79 that is spreading a message of hope 00:03:10.82\00:03:12.69 to the people of Mwanza. 00:03:12.72\00:03:14.66 The medical staff's dream is now reality 00:03:14.69\00:03:17.23 as they admit patients into the facility. 00:03:17.26\00:03:20.20 So many people began coming here 00:03:20.23\00:03:22.10 that they not only use the new hospital building, 00:03:22.13\00:03:24.57 they even had to expand the existing clinic. 00:03:24.60\00:03:27.64 People come to this clinic because it's known as a place 00:03:27.67\00:03:30.34 with caring doctors and nurses 00:03:30.37\00:03:32.47 and the staff take pride 00:03:32.51\00:03:33.84 in their approach to medical care. 00:03:33.88\00:03:35.44 The compassion that is in this hospital, 00:03:35.48\00:03:38.05 the way we handle patient is different. 00:03:38.08\00:03:41.08 We don't handle them like customers 00:03:41.12\00:03:43.82 or people who bring to us money. 00:03:43.85\00:03:46.62 We handle them with care, their safety, 00:03:46.65\00:03:49.66 and their well-being is our priority. 00:03:49.69\00:03:53.63 Each morning, hospital staff meet in an unfinished space 00:03:53.66\00:03:57.03 for devotional time. 00:03:57.07\00:03:58.43 This hospital is different 00:03:58.47\00:04:00.64 because first we start with prayers in the morning. 00:04:00.67\00:04:03.91 And personally, if I miss them in the morning, 00:04:03.94\00:04:07.28 my day's usually not the same 00:04:07.31\00:04:10.08 compared to when I wake up early 00:04:10.11\00:04:12.85 and I come early 00:04:12.88\00:04:14.22 to the morning devotion every day. 00:04:14.25\00:04:16.58 So when we start with prayers, 00:04:16.62\00:04:18.09 it's like Holy Spirit is with us 00:04:18.12\00:04:20.29 when we see patients. 00:04:20.32\00:04:23.16 Angela had a tumor growing in her stomach 00:04:23.19\00:04:25.53 that caused her pain for two years. 00:04:25.56\00:04:28.06 All she could do was lie in bed. 00:04:28.10\00:04:30.63 She didn't know where to go for help, 00:04:30.67\00:04:32.20 until someone told her about the Adventist Hospital. 00:04:32.23\00:04:37.21 Before I came here, I was hopeless. 00:04:37.24\00:04:39.97 I thought I was going to die. 00:04:40.01\00:04:41.94 But when I came to this hospital, 00:04:41.98\00:04:43.91 I felt well again completely. 00:04:43.95\00:04:47.65 Hospital staff prayed for Angela. 00:04:47.68\00:04:50.02 And after intense surgery, 00:04:50.05\00:04:51.52 doctors successfully removed the tumor. 00:04:51.55\00:04:54.56 I felt hope after the doctors came in. 00:04:54.59\00:04:57.66 They didn't sleep day or night for me. 00:04:57.69\00:05:01.83 Although she still needs to take it easy, 00:05:01.86\00:05:03.97 Angela is now able to perform household tasks 00:05:04.00\00:05:07.20 that she wasn't able to do for the last two years. 00:05:07.24\00:05:10.21 She and many other patients excitedly tell others 00:05:10.24\00:05:12.97 about their experience in the hospital. 00:05:13.01\00:05:17.58 This hospital has been overloaded 00:05:17.61\00:05:19.98 with God's power. 00:05:20.02\00:05:23.79 I can testify to this because of the services 00:05:23.82\00:05:26.76 I received in my experience here. 00:05:26.79\00:05:32.09 I know the services are excellent 00:05:32.13\00:05:34.16 and I really appreciate what I received. 00:05:34.20\00:05:39.63 And I'm praying for this hospital now. 00:05:39.67\00:05:44.31 The hospital always follows up with its patients 00:05:44.34\00:05:46.51 through a compassion unit. 00:05:46.54\00:05:48.44 This dedicated team makes calls 00:05:53.92\00:05:56.32 and visits former patients to stay connected 00:05:56.35\00:05:59.02 and pray for them. 00:05:59.05\00:06:02.79 I'm proud of this ministry because I see patients change. 00:06:02.82\00:06:07.96 Even last Sabbath, 00:06:08.00\00:06:09.33 I saw a former patient get baptized. 00:06:09.36\00:06:14.20 Their heart was transformed. 00:06:14.24\00:06:16.04 They believed in God, and they're doing very well. 00:06:16.07\00:06:21.68 It's so interesting to see how people change 00:06:21.71\00:06:24.41 from their discouragement 00:06:24.45\00:06:25.81 to a close relationship with God. 00:06:25.85\00:06:27.88 They're growing physically and spiritually here, 00:06:31.09\00:06:34.26 enough that people are being baptized. 00:06:34.29\00:06:36.93 Your contributions 00:06:40.16\00:06:41.50 to the 13th Sabbath Offering in 2013 00:06:41.53\00:06:44.27 have made an impact 00:06:44.30\00:06:45.63 in the lives of many people in Mwanza. 00:06:45.67\00:06:48.04 Patients and staff are grateful for this building 00:06:48.07\00:06:50.67 and how God has used it in powerful ways. 00:06:50.71\00:06:53.81 I thank everyone for what they have contributed 00:06:53.84\00:06:57.91 and I want to assure them that the money they offered 00:06:57.95\00:07:02.02 is really being put in place 00:07:02.05\00:07:04.29 because you see people who really come back to us 00:07:04.32\00:07:07.62 and they say it is good in this place 00:07:07.66\00:07:11.13 who have helped us 00:07:11.16\00:07:12.49 when we come here and get healed. 00:07:12.53\00:07:15.16 And that is not because we have good doctors, 00:07:15.20\00:07:17.50 it's because we have good working in this place. 00:07:17.53\00:07:21.24 Please pray for the work being done in Tanzania 00:07:21.27\00:07:23.94 and for this medical ministry. 00:07:23.97\00:07:25.97 Thank you for helping people like Angela 00:07:26.01\00:07:28.34 and for your continued support of the 13th Sabbath Offering. 00:07:28.38\00:07:31.31 We're on the campus of Andrews University 00:07:35.08\00:07:37.12 and my guest is Michelet William. 00:07:37.15\00:07:39.79 And thank you so much for joining us today. 00:07:39.82\00:07:42.39 And you are a graduate student here. 00:07:42.42\00:07:44.83 And you partly illustrate the fact 00:07:44.86\00:07:47.43 that Andrews University has students 00:07:47.46\00:07:48.96 from all over the world. 00:07:49.00\00:07:50.33 Where do you come from? 00:07:50.37\00:07:51.70 I come from Haiti. 00:07:51.73\00:07:53.07 Okay. And what were you doing there? 00:07:53.10\00:07:55.14 I was working for ADRA. I worked six years for them. 00:07:55.17\00:07:58.84 And then I joined World vision. 00:07:58.87\00:08:01.14 I worked for two years for World Vision 00:08:01.18\00:08:02.74 and then I worked for Plan International, 00:08:02.78\00:08:05.08 in Haiti first 00:08:05.11\00:08:06.45 and then I went to Mali, West Africa. 00:08:06.48\00:08:09.38 And from there, I applied to Andrews 00:08:09.42\00:08:11.89 to do my MD, Master in Divinity. 00:08:11.92\00:08:14.76 And since I've been here on campus, 00:08:14.79\00:08:17.63 now I'm pursuing my PhD in Mission. 00:08:17.66\00:08:21.16 Now why would somebody 00:08:21.20\00:08:23.43 who is involved in international aid work 00:08:23.47\00:08:27.44 decide to come and study theology? 00:08:27.47\00:08:31.11 From the Bible, we can see a connection 00:08:31.14\00:08:33.27 between theology and social work. 00:08:33.31\00:08:38.11 Christ was doing both. 00:08:38.15\00:08:40.08 He came to save people. 00:08:40.12\00:08:42.68 But what He did first, He mingled with them, 00:08:42.72\00:08:45.85 and He showed them compassion. 00:08:45.89\00:08:47.56 He ministered to their needs, 00:08:47.59\00:08:48.99 and then according to what Ellen White says, 00:08:49.02\00:08:52.13 He bid them, follow Me. 00:08:52.16\00:08:54.26 So you see, you need to... 00:08:54.30\00:08:56.70 You know, the soul, 00:08:56.73\00:08:58.07 the salvation of the soul is priority. 00:08:58.10\00:09:00.40 But to reach people, you need first to show them, 00:09:00.44\00:09:03.71 you know, love, sympathy, 00:09:03.74\00:09:05.07 compassion, and meet their needs. 00:09:05.11\00:09:06.44 So this is why 00:09:06.47\00:09:07.81 I've been doing social work for many years. 00:09:07.84\00:09:09.34 And God impressed me 00:09:09.38\00:09:11.05 that I need knowledge in theology. 00:09:11.08\00:09:13.95 And now I'm in a better position 00:09:13.98\00:09:15.78 to combine the two. 00:09:15.82\00:09:17.15 Wonderful. 00:09:17.19\00:09:18.52 So I guess what you're doing now 00:09:18.55\00:09:19.89 is really you're studying Missiology. 00:09:19.92\00:09:21.26 Exactly. 00:09:21.29\00:09:22.62 Yeah, combining the theory and the practice together. 00:09:22.66\00:09:26.23 So when you felt called by God to do some further studying 00:09:26.26\00:09:30.13 and you came here, 00:09:30.17\00:09:31.70 have your expectations been realized? 00:09:31.73\00:09:35.04 Have you found this 00:09:35.07\00:09:36.64 a helpful thing here at Andrews? 00:09:36.67\00:09:38.47 Here at Andrews, it's a great environment. 00:09:38.51\00:09:41.91 And I think it's up to you 00:09:41.94\00:09:44.51 to profit from all the good things 00:09:44.55\00:09:47.85 that are happening here. 00:09:47.88\00:09:49.22 You have, you know, great people 00:09:49.25\00:09:51.02 with a lot of experience 00:09:51.05\00:09:52.52 and you have a lot of resources, 00:09:52.55\00:09:54.19 materials that you can use. 00:09:54.22\00:09:56.29 If you are not really committed, 00:09:56.32\00:09:58.16 you can also go and do things that are not good. 00:09:58.19\00:10:03.40 Some people, you know, 00:10:03.43\00:10:04.77 have had some bad experience here, 00:10:04.80\00:10:06.13 but for me, it has been very positive. 00:10:06.17\00:10:08.50 I've grown spiritually, emotionally in my walk with God 00:10:08.54\00:10:13.58 and especially 00:10:13.61\00:10:14.94 in my relationship with other people. 00:10:14.98\00:10:16.54 And while here, 00:10:16.58\00:10:17.91 I was able to continue what I've been doing before. 00:10:17.95\00:10:21.28 We've... 00:10:21.32\00:10:22.65 Students, 00:10:22.68\00:10:24.25 we have created a fund. 00:10:24.29\00:10:28.39 We collected money to help people or children 00:10:28.42\00:10:31.86 in Mali and also in Haiti. 00:10:31.89\00:10:34.46 So last year, for example, 00:10:34.50\00:10:35.83 we were able to provide scholarships for 20 children, 00:10:35.86\00:10:39.13 helping them to go to school, 00:10:39.17\00:10:40.97 and through that ministry, 00:10:41.00\00:10:42.70 their parents were able to attend church services 00:10:42.74\00:10:46.88 and some of them got baptized. 00:10:46.91\00:10:49.78 So I praise God for bringing me here 00:10:49.81\00:10:52.98 because while here, 00:10:53.01\00:10:54.75 I think that I'm in a better position 00:10:54.78\00:10:56.75 to make a difference in the world. 00:10:56.79\00:10:58.29 Wonderful. 00:10:58.32\00:10:59.65 So what is the name of this organization 00:10:59.69\00:11:01.59 that you've started? 00:11:01.62\00:11:02.96 Team in Action to Save Kids. 00:11:02.99\00:11:05.49 Team in Action to Save Kids. I love that. 00:11:05.53\00:11:08.60 So you've recruited other students here 00:11:08.63\00:11:10.47 with a goal to help promote this? 00:11:10.50\00:11:12.93 Exactly. 00:11:12.97\00:11:14.30 And last year, we went on a mission trip to Haiti, 00:11:14.34\00:11:17.71 in a community where there is no electricity 00:11:17.74\00:11:21.14 and those kids rely on kerosene lamps 00:11:21.18\00:11:25.71 to study by night and this affected their eyes 00:11:25.75\00:11:28.98 and sometimes there are accidents, 00:11:29.02\00:11:33.82 some houses get burned 00:11:33.86\00:11:35.82 when, you know, the lamps are fell on the floor 00:11:35.86\00:11:39.59 while people are sleeping. 00:11:39.63\00:11:41.33 So in order to prevent those things, 00:11:41.36\00:11:43.70 we collected money to purchase a very effective, 00:11:43.73\00:11:48.04 efficient solar lamp 00:11:48.07\00:11:50.41 that can be powered by solar energy. 00:11:50.44\00:11:53.11 And we went there and we distributed those lamps 00:11:53.14\00:11:55.54 to those kids. 00:11:55.58\00:11:56.91 It was such a blessing for the community. 00:11:56.95\00:11:59.01 And the church, the Adventist church 00:11:59.05\00:12:00.52 in the community was dying. 00:12:00.55\00:12:02.12 Very, very few people come to church. 00:12:02.15\00:12:04.15 We did the distribution of the lamps on a Friday. 00:12:04.19\00:12:07.49 And we invited people to church on Saturday. 00:12:07.52\00:12:10.53 The following day, that Saturday, 00:12:10.56\00:12:12.39 the church was crowded, people flocked to the church, 00:12:12.43\00:12:15.93 and I was preaching. 00:12:15.96\00:12:17.73 And I can see the connection 00:12:17.77\00:12:19.13 between the social action that we did, 00:12:19.17\00:12:21.57 the day before 00:12:21.60\00:12:22.94 and the invitation to come to church, 00:12:22.97\00:12:24.57 people are more willing to follow Christ, 00:12:24.61\00:12:27.34 to follow the gospel 00:12:27.38\00:12:28.71 when they see that you care for their needs. 00:12:28.74\00:12:32.11 Of course, we've known this for many years 00:12:32.15\00:12:33.72 with Christ method of ministry, haven't we, 00:12:33.75\00:12:35.58 so that we have to mingle, show sympathy, 00:12:35.62\00:12:37.49 minister the needs, win confidence, 00:12:37.52\00:12:39.42 but often we skip all those steps, 00:12:39.45\00:12:41.89 and we'd like to come in 00:12:41.92\00:12:43.26 at the last step of bidding, right? 00:12:43.29\00:12:44.63 Yes. That's been our speciality. 00:12:44.66\00:12:47.46 So in your dissertation, 00:12:47.50\00:12:49.33 are you looking at issues like this? 00:12:49.36\00:12:50.70 Tell me what you're doing. 00:12:50.73\00:12:52.07 Yeah, my dissertation will be on social justice 00:12:52.10\00:12:56.71 from missiological perspective. 00:12:56.74\00:12:59.94 It is how to combine, 00:12:59.97\00:13:01.94 you know, evangelism with social action. 00:13:01.98\00:13:05.68 When you go in a community and you see the injustices, 00:13:05.71\00:13:09.45 so should we stay quiet, should we stay silent? 00:13:09.48\00:13:12.52 And when I studied the Bible, 00:13:12.55\00:13:14.92 and even in also the writings of Sister White, 00:13:14.96\00:13:18.73 and I can see that evangelism 00:13:18.76\00:13:21.50 and social action should go together. 00:13:21.53\00:13:22.86 Yes. 00:13:22.90\00:13:24.23 So my dissertation will be a proposal, 00:13:24.27\00:13:28.67 a kind of framework 00:13:28.70\00:13:30.81 how the church can combine both evangelism 00:13:30.84\00:13:36.71 and in social justice activities 00:13:36.75\00:13:39.48 without damaging the reputation, 00:13:39.51\00:13:45.05 and also the mission of the church 00:13:45.09\00:13:48.52 because the Adventist church has a clear mission, 00:13:48.56\00:13:52.19 a clear message for the end time, 00:13:52.23\00:13:54.30 so we need to keep the focus, but while doing it, 00:13:54.33\00:13:57.73 how we can address, you know, the needs they want. 00:13:57.77\00:14:00.14 So this is the focus of my dissertation. 00:14:00.17\00:14:02.07 Wonderful. Merci beaucoup. 00:14:02.10\00:14:04.37 Oh, Je vous en prie. Thank you so much. 00:14:04.41\00:14:06.14 Appreciate you sharing with us today. 00:14:06.17\00:14:07.74 Yes, thank you for having me. 00:14:07.78\00:14:09.11 And viewers at home, 00:14:09.14\00:14:10.48 Michelet represents many students 00:14:10.51\00:14:13.05 who come here, they have the opportunity 00:14:13.08\00:14:16.32 as we've heard to learn more, 00:14:16.35\00:14:18.79 to put a bit more robust theology 00:14:18.82\00:14:20.69 behind what they're doing. 00:14:20.72\00:14:22.06 So they're much more effective 00:14:22.09\00:14:23.43 when they go back out into the mission field 00:14:23.46\00:14:26.56 which is the communities of this world. 00:14:26.59\00:14:28.53 Please pray for Andrews University. 00:14:28.56\00:14:30.43 Pray for the students here from around the world. 00:14:30.47\00:14:33.00 They will continue to be a light for Jesus. 00:14:33.03\00:14:35.24 We'll be right back after this break. 00:14:35.27\00:14:37.27
