Welcome back to San Francisco. 00:00:08.20\00:00:10.11 And behind me, you can see the very impressive City Hall. 00:00:10.14\00:00:14.21 Well, next up, we hear the amazing story 00:00:14.24\00:00:16.58 of Elder David Babcock, Pioneer Missionary to Nigeria. 00:00:16.61\00:00:21.18 My guest today is Dr. Onaolapo Ajibade 00:00:21.22\00:00:24.09 from the West Central Africa division. 00:00:24.12\00:00:26.59 Dr. Onaolapo Ajibade is one of the regional editors 00:00:26.62\00:00:29.06 for the encyclopedia of Seventh-day Adventists, 00:00:29.09\00:00:31.89 overseen by the office 00:00:31.93\00:00:33.29 of archive statistics and research, 00:00:33.33\00:00:35.53 this new reference work 00:00:35.56\00:00:36.90 will feature thousands of entries 00:00:36.93\00:00:38.53 from around the world on a variety of topics, 00:00:38.57\00:00:41.47 including articles on mission work. 00:00:41.50\00:00:43.71 Dr. Ajibade, Thank you so much 00:00:43.74\00:00:45.51 for joining us on Mission 360 TV today. 00:00:45.54\00:00:47.94 Thank you for having me. 00:00:47.98\00:00:49.44 Now, you'll be sharing some stories 00:00:49.48\00:00:51.25 on a few missionaries who served in your division. 00:00:51.28\00:00:54.35 Could you tell us a story about these missionaries 00:00:54.38\00:00:57.19 who served in your division? 00:00:57.22\00:00:58.55 I'll have to tell you the story 00:00:58.59\00:00:59.92 of how the message came to Nigeria. 00:00:59.95\00:01:02.26 Great. 00:01:02.29\00:01:03.63 The first missionary to come to Nigeria 00:01:03.66\00:01:07.03 was David Cladwell Babcock. 00:01:07.06\00:01:11.07 He came there in 1914 with his wife and children, 00:01:11.10\00:01:15.37 and he settled in a town called Erumu. 00:01:15.40\00:01:18.97 Erumu is about 16 miles 00:01:19.01\00:01:23.14 from the capital of present... 00:01:23.18\00:01:27.25 Now in those days, 00:01:27.28\00:01:28.85 the various denominations shared the territories. 00:01:28.88\00:01:32.82 So when he came, in fact, when Babcock came, 00:01:32.85\00:01:36.66 the first missionary for any Christian group 00:01:36.69\00:01:40.16 had come 50 years earlier. 00:01:40.20\00:01:42.50 So relatively we were late, 00:01:42.53\00:01:44.93 so he couldn't get any of the cities. 00:01:44.97\00:01:47.30 So he had to go 00:01:47.34\00:01:48.67 to a fairly remote place called Erumu. 00:01:48.70\00:01:51.11 That was where he settled in 1914. 00:01:51.14\00:01:54.34 And within one year, 00:01:54.38\00:01:55.71 he was able to make seven converts. 00:01:55.74\00:01:58.11 And then from there, 00:01:58.15\00:01:59.61 he went further north to another place called Shao, 00:01:59.65\00:02:03.69 there he established a school 00:02:03.72\00:02:05.85 and train the first batch of workers, 00:02:05.89\00:02:08.89 gospel workers, indigenous workers. 00:02:08.92\00:02:11.86 So he established church there too. 00:02:11.89\00:02:13.83 While he was there, 00:02:13.86\00:02:15.50 he was invited to yet another town, 00:02:15.53\00:02:18.07 about 78 miles to the second city 00:02:18.10\00:02:22.87 that he went down there. 00:02:22.90\00:02:24.24 They had heard about the Sabbath, 00:02:24.27\00:02:25.61 he went and preached 00:02:25.64\00:02:27.01 and there he had 78 people 00:02:27.04\00:02:29.34 joining the church at the same time. 00:02:29.38\00:02:31.68 Wow, that's amazing. 00:02:31.71\00:02:33.28 So between 1914 and 1915, 00:02:33.31\00:02:38.72 he was able to establish three churches. 00:02:38.75\00:02:40.92 One in Erumu, the second in Shao, 00:02:40.96\00:02:43.53 the third in Iputi. 00:02:43.56\00:02:46.09 So that was what happened. 00:02:46.13\00:02:47.46 So within this time, he was able to establish. 00:02:47.50\00:02:49.76 Now he had a school also and trained local workers, 00:02:49.80\00:02:54.30 which was very, very good. 00:02:54.34\00:02:55.67 Right. So that was what he did. 00:02:55.70\00:02:57.07 And now and that is western part of Nigeria. 00:02:57.11\00:03:00.38 Western part of Nigeria. 00:03:00.41\00:03:01.78 Now we believe that today we have a university 00:03:01.81\00:03:05.75 named after him, Babcock University... 00:03:05.78\00:03:07.68 Right. 00:03:07.72\00:03:09.05 With a student population of 10,000, 00:03:09.08\00:03:10.99 one of the largest Adventist universities 00:03:11.02\00:03:13.05 in the whole world. 00:03:13.09\00:03:14.42 That's incredible. 00:03:14.46\00:03:15.79 So what I thank the Lord for the work that Babcock did. 00:03:15.82\00:03:18.39 Now Nigeria is a very big place. 00:03:18.43\00:03:21.26 One missionary is not enough to cover the entire country. 00:03:21.30\00:03:24.43 Therefore, that was for the West. 00:03:24.47\00:03:26.17 Now another missionary went to the eastern part of Nigeria. 00:03:26.20\00:03:29.44 His name was Jessie Clifford. 00:03:29.47\00:03:32.31 He went 1923 00:03:32.34\00:03:34.41 and he had established the church there. 00:03:34.44\00:03:36.11 And the church has also grown 00:03:36.14\00:03:38.01 to become a union conference. 00:03:38.05\00:03:39.71 If be about 158,000 members right now. 00:03:39.75\00:03:43.28 Praise God. 00:03:43.32\00:03:44.65 The university is birthed there too 00:03:44.69\00:03:46.22 called Clifford University. 00:03:46.25\00:03:48.02 Also named after him. 00:03:48.06\00:03:49.39 Also named after the missionary. 00:03:49.42\00:03:50.93 The third part of Nigeria 00:03:50.96\00:03:52.76 is the northern part of Nigeria. 00:03:52.79\00:03:55.60 Again, another missionary went there. 00:03:55.63\00:03:57.97 His name was J.J. Hyde. 00:03:58.00\00:04:00.74 His wife was a nurse. 00:04:00.77\00:04:04.31 And incidentally, 00:04:04.34\00:04:05.67 the medical ministry was the best tool 00:04:05.71\00:04:08.14 to win the people. 00:04:08.18\00:04:10.71 Now because his wife was a nurse, 00:04:10.75\00:04:12.71 he began to treat patients within one year, 00:04:12.75\00:04:17.39 that is 1932, he was able to treat 00:04:17.42\00:04:20.99 nearly 9,000 patients. 00:04:21.02\00:04:22.92 Wow. 00:04:22.96\00:04:24.29 And through the medical missionaries, 00:04:24.33\00:04:25.79 we were able to win souls. 00:04:25.83\00:04:27.43 Again, Northern Nigeria is not a union conference. 00:04:27.46\00:04:31.33 So in Nigeria, we have three union conferences, 00:04:31.37\00:04:34.04 one in the west, one in the east, 00:04:34.07\00:04:36.04 and one in the North. 00:04:36.07\00:04:37.41 I want to thank God for these three missionaries 00:04:37.44\00:04:39.47 who came in spite of all the odds, 00:04:39.51\00:04:42.18 established the church 00:04:42.21\00:04:43.55 and the Lord has used them wonderfully. 00:04:43.58\00:04:44.91 Right. Right. Exactly. 00:04:44.95\00:04:46.28 And that's incredible to hear 00:04:46.31\00:04:47.65 of how these missionaries were able to reach 00:04:47.68\00:04:51.05 really the whole country 00:04:51.09\00:04:52.59 or at least try to reach the whole country, 00:04:52.62\00:04:54.79 and that their impact is felt even now, 00:04:54.82\00:04:56.83 as you mentioned, with the two universities there 00:04:56.86\00:04:59.29 and just the Union Mission that has been established 00:04:59.33\00:05:02.00 with hundreds of thousands of members, that's incredible. 00:05:02.03\00:05:04.73 Now did they face any challenges 00:05:04.77\00:05:07.20 while they were there? 00:05:07.24\00:05:08.57 Oh, Babcock faced health challenge, 00:05:08.60\00:05:12.04 in fact, he had to go back in 1917, 00:05:12.07\00:05:17.55 he had to go back 00:05:17.58\00:05:18.91 because he had a disease called sleeping sickness. 00:05:18.95\00:05:23.42 So he had to rush back. 00:05:23.45\00:05:25.45 And when he was going back, 00:05:25.49\00:05:27.19 it was during the First World War. 00:05:27.22\00:05:30.13 His ship was torpedoed, but God saved him miraculously. 00:05:30.16\00:05:34.20 Praise God. So that was what happened. 00:05:34.23\00:05:35.56 And the rest didn't have that problem. 00:05:35.60\00:05:38.60 But they went at the right... 00:05:38.63\00:05:40.97 They were not attacked by... 00:05:41.00\00:05:43.07 They were able to withhold all the hazards, 00:05:43.10\00:05:46.47 but Babcock could not stay long because of disease. 00:05:46.51\00:05:49.68 Right. 00:05:49.71\00:05:51.35 Well, thank God that 00:05:51.38\00:05:52.71 they were able to still minister 00:05:52.75\00:05:54.08 and serve despite any challenges 00:05:54.12\00:05:55.55 that they might have faced. 00:05:55.58\00:05:56.92 They did. They did. And the work is still going on. 00:05:56.95\00:05:58.65 Right, exactly. 00:05:58.69\00:06:00.02 It was a mustard seed, now it's a big, big structure. 00:06:00.06\00:06:03.66 Right. And it's still growing. 00:06:03.69\00:06:05.03 We what want to thank the Lord for them. 00:06:05.06\00:06:06.39 Definitely. Definitely. 00:06:06.43\00:06:07.86 Their spirit is very, very inspiring. 00:06:07.90\00:06:12.00 The kind of spirit they had is very, very inspiring. 00:06:12.03\00:06:15.80 And we wish we could have as many missionaries. 00:06:15.84\00:06:18.74 Of course, we have become missionaries ourselves. 00:06:18.77\00:06:20.68 Right, exactly. 00:06:20.71\00:06:22.44 Was there on any part of these missionary stories 00:06:22.48\00:06:25.61 that you've particularly found inspiring for yourself? 00:06:25.65\00:06:28.95 Oh, yes. 00:06:28.98\00:06:30.32 All of them, the sacrifices they made, 00:06:30.35\00:06:32.72 can you imagine going to a place, 00:06:32.75\00:06:34.49 I mean, you don't eat your food, 00:06:34.52\00:06:36.76 you don't know the weather, 00:06:36.79\00:06:38.13 you don't even know how they will receive you, 00:06:38.16\00:06:39.69 but because God said go, you went. 00:06:39.73\00:06:41.66 That is most inspiring. 00:06:41.70\00:06:43.87 And right now, 00:06:43.90\00:06:45.23 there are still many unentered places 00:06:45.27\00:06:46.63 in the world. 00:06:46.67\00:06:48.00 And we need the spirit, the heart, 00:06:48.04\00:06:49.90 if the work is going to be finished. 00:06:49.94\00:06:51.54 Right. 00:06:51.57\00:06:52.91 So the spirited heart to go to an unknown place 00:06:52.94\00:06:55.58 because God said they should go 00:06:55.61\00:06:57.28 as Abrahamic faiths, which inspires me a lot. 00:06:57.31\00:07:01.32 Definitely. 00:07:01.35\00:07:02.68 And we should all have that faith 00:07:02.72\00:07:04.05 if the work should be finished. 00:07:04.09\00:07:05.52 Right, and it's hearing these stories of mission work 00:07:05.55\00:07:08.46 that happens throughout the world in the past that 00:07:08.49\00:07:11.66 inspires me and others to want to finish 00:07:11.69\00:07:14.73 that work too and continue that legacy... 00:07:14.76\00:07:16.60 Exactly, exactly. Of missionaries from our past. 00:07:16.63\00:07:18.77 Thank you so much, Dr. Ajibade, 00:07:18.80\00:07:20.34 for sharing these stories with us today. 00:07:20.37\00:07:22.60 Thank you very much. 00:07:22.64\00:07:23.97 Reporting for Mission 360. My name is Chelsea Tyler. 00:07:24.01\00:07:28.18 Next up, we traveled to New Zealand 00:07:28.21\00:07:29.94 and meet a woman who was searching for answers 00:07:29.98\00:07:32.71 and found them. 00:07:32.75\00:07:35.05 In 2011, I lost my partner. 00:07:35.08\00:07:39.49 And then 2014, I lost my father. 00:07:39.52\00:07:43.86 I started becoming more curious about 00:07:46.90\00:07:53.44 where God was in my life. 00:07:53.47\00:07:58.31 My name is Adelaide, and this is my story. 00:07:58.34\00:08:02.61 Started flicking through all the channels 00:08:02.64\00:08:05.38 on the TV and Hope, I would flick it on. 00:08:05.41\00:08:10.62 And I had all these questions and just, 00:08:10.65\00:08:13.86 wow, I was amazed because questions 00:08:13.89\00:08:16.62 I had in my mind were being answered more or less 00:08:16.66\00:08:20.06 when I switched the channel on, and that was the amazing thing. 00:08:20.10\00:08:24.10 And I've got to a point 00:08:24.13\00:08:26.50 where I would tell my daughters, 00:08:26.53\00:08:29.20 "Hey, remember that question I just asked about God, 00:08:29.24\00:08:33.27 guess what? 00:08:33.31\00:08:36.14 It's just been answered. 00:08:36.18\00:08:37.65 You have to come in and see, 00:08:37.68\00:08:39.21 you have to come in and listen." 00:08:39.25\00:08:41.02 It just became the only thing that 00:08:41.05\00:08:44.75 we would be watching on TV. 00:08:44.79\00:08:47.46 I had questions about where my father 00:08:47.49\00:08:50.56 and my partner really were. 00:08:50.59\00:08:54.20 So I went pretty deep and quiet on that one. 00:08:54.23\00:08:58.03 And then I thought, "Ah, tune on the channel 00:08:58.07\00:09:01.80 and see they had an answer." 00:09:01.84\00:09:05.31 Once I had found the connection with the Seventh-day Adventist, 00:09:05.34\00:09:10.01 I said to my girls, 00:09:10.05\00:09:12.41 "Well, I'm sure there's the church 00:09:12.45\00:09:15.02 down the road. 00:09:15.05\00:09:16.38 Let's go and have a look." 00:09:16.42\00:09:18.45 So from then on as I stalked, 00:09:18.49\00:09:24.43 I call it stalking, 00:09:24.46\00:09:27.10 I staked the church for three months, 00:09:27.13\00:09:29.66 while I was having Sabbath at home 00:09:29.70\00:09:32.67 with the channel, with Hope channel. 00:09:32.70\00:09:35.47 Once we came and we all got shy, 00:09:35.50\00:09:40.04 we went down, we came down, 00:09:40.08\00:09:42.78 drove around and then went around 00:09:42.81\00:09:47.18 the block again. 00:09:47.22\00:09:48.98 Third time we came, 00:09:49.02\00:09:51.15 we were all dressed and prepared. 00:09:51.19\00:09:54.29 We took a deep breath outside the door 00:09:54.32\00:09:56.56 and we just said we're gonna do this. 00:09:56.59\00:09:59.76 All right, let's do this. 00:09:59.79\00:10:02.60 And then we walked through the door 00:10:02.63\00:10:04.83 and we came in and sat down 00:10:04.87\00:10:08.14 and it just felt like home. 00:10:08.17\00:10:12.14 What I have learned 00:10:12.17\00:10:13.68 since coming into the Seventh-day Adventist 00:10:13.71\00:10:19.41 about death is that they are asleep 00:10:19.45\00:10:25.12 and it feels I'm really peaceful 00:10:25.15\00:10:28.59 with finally knowing the truth. 00:10:28.62\00:10:30.56 Quite interesting to know what she'd learned 00:10:30.59\00:10:33.03 through Hope channel, 00:10:33.06\00:10:34.40 not only about the Sabbath 00:10:34.43\00:10:36.16 but also about what happens when someone dies 00:10:36.20\00:10:38.80 and that Jesus is coming again. 00:10:38.83\00:10:41.74 I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. 00:10:41.77\00:10:46.98 I was happy that 00:10:47.01\00:10:50.68 I'd finally got a diagnosis, 00:10:50.71\00:10:53.58 didn't really understand the diagnosis. 00:10:53.62\00:10:56.75 So when I got off the phone, 00:10:56.79\00:11:00.26 I got down on my knees straight away. 00:11:00.29\00:11:03.73 I just said, "Okay, Lord, 00:11:03.76\00:11:06.49 thank you, thank you for that. 00:11:06.53\00:11:10.33 And I know that I asked you to help me lose some weight, 00:11:10.37\00:11:16.30 but I didn't think it was going to be like this. 00:11:16.34\00:11:21.84 But that's okay, it is what it is. 00:11:21.88\00:11:26.55 Now I'm going to do this with you. 00:11:26.58\00:11:30.09 And we're going to do this journey together." 00:11:30.12\00:11:35.52 Our mother showed us the path to follow, 00:11:42.30\00:11:44.87 and we will try to remain on that path 00:11:44.90\00:11:49.00 so that we can meet her again. 00:11:49.04\00:11:50.67 I would love my children to know that 00:12:05.59\00:12:08.96 God is real and that He loves us. 00:12:08.99\00:12:11.03 Well, thanks so much for joining us today 00:12:21.67\00:12:23.24 on Mission 360. 00:12:23.27\00:12:25.04 I hope that you're inspired 00:12:25.07\00:12:26.41 and challenged by the stories that we saw and heard. 00:12:26.44\00:12:29.54 The story of Adelaide touched through the ministry 00:12:29.58\00:12:32.51 of the Hope Channel. 00:12:32.55\00:12:34.05 And the story of David Babcock, 00:12:34.08\00:12:36.28 what an amazing venture in faith there in Nigeria 00:12:36.32\00:12:39.89 in the early days of Adventist Mission. 00:12:39.92\00:12:41.72 I want to thank you 00:12:41.76\00:12:43.09 for being a part of Adventist Mission, 00:12:43.12\00:12:44.73 for your prayers, for your financial support, 00:12:44.76\00:12:47.06 your donations to Global Mission, 00:12:47.10\00:12:49.00 your personal involvement. 00:12:49.03\00:12:50.57 They do make a difference for Adventist Mission. 00:12:50.60\00:12:53.54 I'm Gary Kraus. 00:12:53.57\00:12:54.90 And I hope that you can join me 00:12:54.94\00:12:56.27 next time right here on Mission 360. 00:12:56.30\00:12:58.97
