Warming hearts with ice in Trinidad and Tobago, 00:00:07.97\00:00:11.54 the amazing story 00:00:11.57\00:00:12.91 of pioneer missionary David Babcock 00:00:12.94\00:00:15.44 and when God appeared on television in New Zealand, 00:00:15.48\00:00:19.01 all that and much more coming up next. 00:00:19.05\00:00:21.55 Hello and welcome to Mission 360. 00:00:54.08\00:00:55.82 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:55.85\00:00:57.32 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:57.35\00:00:58.89 from San Francisco, in California. 00:00:58.92\00:01:02.06 But I'm actually just across the bridge 00:01:02.09\00:01:03.99 in Oakland, California. 00:01:04.03\00:01:06.16 And here you can see the harbor area 00:01:06.19\00:01:09.46 where in 1890, September 1890, 00:01:09.50\00:01:13.40 some 1,500 Adventists gathered together 00:01:13.44\00:01:16.10 for something pretty exciting. 00:01:16.14\00:01:18.07 And it was the launch of the Pitcairn boat. 00:01:18.11\00:01:20.98 What an amazing event that must have been. 00:01:21.01\00:01:22.84 I wish I could have been there 00:01:22.88\00:01:24.21 as church members came together 00:01:24.25\00:01:26.28 to celebrate the sacrifice of church members, 00:01:26.31\00:01:29.32 including children 00:01:29.35\00:01:30.69 to put their mission offerings together 00:01:30.72\00:01:32.69 to launch a boat to go into the South Pacific. 00:01:32.72\00:01:35.72 And it traveled to Pitcairn, to Fiji, other islands 00:01:35.76\00:01:38.43 and open up work in that area of the world. 00:01:38.46\00:01:41.60 On today's program, 00:01:41.63\00:01:42.96 we're going to be looking at mission around the world 00:01:43.00\00:01:44.87 here in San Francisco. 00:01:44.90\00:01:46.63 And, first of all, 00:01:46.67\00:01:48.00 we're going to travel to Trinidad and Tobago. 00:01:48.04\00:01:50.11 I'm a snow cone vendor, 00:02:01.15\00:02:03.02 and I've been selling this since the age of 13, 00:02:03.05\00:02:06.02 and now I'm just about to be 40. 00:02:06.05\00:02:09.29 It's a sugary liquid on ice and with milk. 00:02:09.32\00:02:14.56 It's the best thing in the Caribbean. 00:02:14.60\00:02:16.77 Meet Wesley, a snow cone vendor in Trinidad and Tobago. 00:02:16.80\00:02:20.67 Each day except Saturday, 00:02:20.70\00:02:22.24 he wakes up early to grind ice before leaving for work. 00:02:22.27\00:02:25.47 Then he slowly pedals his cart 00:02:25.51\00:02:27.28 through the quiet streets of Felicity 00:02:27.31\00:02:29.21 to sell his icy fare. 00:02:29.24\00:02:31.25 However, Wesley isn't a regular snow cone vendor, 00:02:31.28\00:02:34.05 he also ministers 00:02:34.08\00:02:35.42 to people's physical and spiritual needs. 00:02:35.45\00:02:37.92 Because that is what I really deem it 00:02:37.95\00:02:39.62 as a privilege to be to bring hope to the hopeless, 00:02:39.65\00:02:43.12 giving encouragement to those that are discouraged, 00:02:43.16\00:02:45.09 to bring fulfillment to those that are empty, 00:02:45.13\00:02:47.66 and also to bring life to those who are dying without Christ. 00:02:47.70\00:02:52.07 Felicity is a rural sugarcane and rice plantation community. 00:02:52.10\00:02:56.20 But even in this peaceful town are painful stories. 00:02:56.24\00:02:59.41 Young children with little food to eat, 00:02:59.44\00:03:01.41 men afflicted by illness, 00:03:01.44\00:03:03.24 and, families struggling to stay together. 00:03:03.28\00:03:05.78 Wesley helps provide food, clothing 00:03:05.81\00:03:08.32 and other basic necessities for those in need. 00:03:08.35\00:03:11.12 He also offers counseling to the families he meets. 00:03:11.15\00:03:13.99 On one occasion, 00:03:14.02\00:03:15.36 Wesley spent two days handing out free snow cones 00:03:15.39\00:03:18.03 to 400 children in the area. 00:03:18.06\00:03:20.56 He does all this to serve a greater purpose. 00:03:20.60\00:03:24.30 Sometimes people will stop me on the street, 00:03:24.33\00:03:26.27 we will pray right there. 00:03:26.30\00:03:28.00 We will enter their home, read the scripture. 00:03:28.04\00:03:31.37 And I give them words of encouragement 00:03:31.41\00:03:33.61 and then invite them to church. 00:03:33.64\00:03:36.51 He's the best person at giving moral support, 00:03:36.54\00:03:38.31 we love him. 00:03:38.35\00:03:39.68 I tell you, he's the best person. 00:03:39.71\00:03:42.62 Because everybody has some string attached to it, 00:03:42.65\00:03:46.92 and he does this without any. 00:03:46.96\00:03:52.23 When talking to him, I feel different. 00:03:52.26\00:03:55.36 Even though this neighborhood 00:03:55.40\00:03:56.73 is made up of people from other world religions, 00:03:56.77\00:03:59.37 Wesley has earned the respect of the community. 00:03:59.40\00:04:02.57 Today he offers physical and spiritual support 00:04:02.60\00:04:05.67 to more than 30 families. 00:04:05.71\00:04:07.98 Through this snow cone ministry, 00:04:08.01\00:04:09.68 the local Adventist Church has had many new visitors. 00:04:09.71\00:04:13.42 Please pray for Wesley's ministry 00:04:13.45\00:04:15.38 that God continues to use him and others 00:04:15.42\00:04:17.82 in Trinidad and Tobago for His work. 00:04:17.85\00:04:20.92 I want to say 00:04:20.96\00:04:22.46 this job that I have is the best job, 00:04:22.49\00:04:25.06 I can even say in the world 00:04:25.09\00:04:26.90 because it helps me to meet people 00:04:26.93\00:04:29.83 and to tell people about the love of Jesus. 00:04:29.86\00:04:32.00 Thank you for supporting mission. 00:04:36.17\00:04:39.94 My guest here in San Francisco is Dr. Urbina, 00:04:39.97\00:04:43.55 who's heading up a unique type of center of influence 00:04:43.58\00:04:47.42 in the Central California area. 00:04:47.45\00:04:49.35 Dr. Urbina, thank you so much for joining us. 00:04:49.38\00:04:51.29 Happy to be here. 00:04:51.32\00:04:52.65 Now, what are you doing exactly in your ministry now? 00:04:52.69\00:04:56.16 You know, I'm the Director for Life Hope Centers Ministry 00:04:56.19\00:04:59.19 as a humanitarian service 00:04:59.23\00:05:01.06 that provides practical and relevant services 00:05:01.10\00:05:04.03 to the community. 00:05:04.07\00:05:05.40 We provide free dental care, 00:05:05.43\00:05:07.10 free vision care and medical screening, 00:05:07.14\00:05:09.20 along with other health related sources or resources 00:05:09.24\00:05:13.17 that the local church has available. 00:05:13.21\00:05:15.78 Now in the office of Adventist Mission, 00:05:15.81\00:05:17.71 we're very interested in urban centers of influence, 00:05:17.75\00:05:21.38 but what you are describing 00:05:21.42\00:05:22.75 is a mobile center of influence. 00:05:22.78\00:05:25.45 Tell me exactly how it works? 00:05:25.49\00:05:27.99 You know, one of our focus is 00:05:28.02\00:05:29.69 the essence of Life Hope Centers Ministry 00:05:29.72\00:05:32.39 is relationship building. 00:05:32.43\00:05:34.36 And in order to build relationship, 00:05:34.40\00:05:36.06 it takes intentionality. 00:05:36.10\00:05:37.83 When we follow Christ's method, 00:05:37.87\00:05:39.73 He mingled as one who sought good in others. 00:05:39.77\00:05:43.00 That's mingling with intentionality. 00:05:43.04\00:05:45.37 So when we prepare for Life Hope Centers program, 00:05:45.41\00:05:48.48 we will meet 00:05:48.51\00:05:49.84 long before the anticipated date of the program 00:05:49.88\00:05:53.15 to prepare our church, finding their resources, 00:05:53.18\00:05:56.38 understanding the needs of the community, 00:05:56.42\00:05:58.59 and serving as a source of matching 00:05:58.62\00:06:03.06 need with resources. 00:06:03.09\00:06:04.79 And so we've worked with the local churches 00:06:04.83\00:06:06.56 and preparing them, 00:06:06.59\00:06:07.96 also to prepare them for the actual day of service. 00:06:08.00\00:06:11.67 And then, most importantly, 00:06:11.70\00:06:13.54 is really having an evangelistic strategy 00:06:13.57\00:06:16.27 of relationship building 00:06:16.30\00:06:17.87 that ultimately leads to introducing them 00:06:17.91\00:06:21.04 to the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:06:21.08\00:06:23.08 During that process, 00:06:23.11\00:06:24.45 we're actually demonstrating his acts of service, 00:06:24.48\00:06:27.85 which are demonstrations of what the gospel message is. 00:06:27.88\00:06:31.02 And so when individuals begin to hear it in Word, 00:06:31.05\00:06:35.12 then they begin to reflect and match 00:06:35.16\00:06:37.33 the actions with the words, 00:06:37.36\00:06:39.09 and then it makes perfect sense to them. 00:06:39.13\00:06:41.03 Terrific. 00:06:41.06\00:06:42.40 Now, I called it a mobile center of influence. 00:06:42.43\00:06:44.83 What exactly is the center that you have traveling around? 00:06:44.87\00:06:50.91 You know, what we find 00:06:50.94\00:06:53.78 as a health crisis in our country 00:06:53.81\00:06:56.44 has become an evangelistic opportunity. 00:06:56.48\00:06:59.78 And so because dental and vision care 00:06:59.81\00:07:01.98 are much, too much needed services 00:07:02.02\00:07:04.49 that are often elective services 00:07:04.52\00:07:06.72 and people's insurance, health insurance portfolio. 00:07:06.76\00:07:12.06 What we do is that we go to churches, 00:07:12.09\00:07:14.96 and we purposely set up 00:07:15.00\00:07:17.03 our programs in the local church 00:07:17.07\00:07:18.80 to help brand the services 00:07:18.83\00:07:21.07 that we're reaching out to the community 00:07:21.10\00:07:23.04 with the local church. 00:07:23.07\00:07:24.64 And so we will, we will set up our mobile clinic as one 00:07:24.67\00:07:27.88 that we have a 27 foot trailer, and it's mobile, portable, 00:07:27.91\00:07:31.85 so that the equipment that we have in our trailer, 00:07:31.88\00:07:34.18 we unload, 00:07:34.22\00:07:35.55 and we adapt it to the needs 00:07:35.58\00:07:36.92 of the available space in the churches. 00:07:36.95\00:07:39.42 And so we'll set up our dental clinic, 00:07:39.45\00:07:41.12 we'll set up our vision clinic, 00:07:41.16\00:07:42.66 and our medical screening clinic there. 00:07:42.69\00:07:44.93 Now you are a pastor, 00:07:44.96\00:07:46.63 but you in a former life were also a dentist. 00:07:46.66\00:07:50.23 How do you combine these two together? 00:07:50.27\00:07:51.93 How did this happen? 00:07:51.97\00:07:53.37 You know, I practiced dentistry for 37 years 00:07:53.40\00:07:56.10 and God took me through the torturous route 00:07:56.14\00:07:59.94 of learning that profession. 00:07:59.97\00:08:04.18 But He had other plans, unbeknownst to me. 00:08:04.21\00:08:06.48 And so His call to ministry 00:08:06.51\00:08:08.58 was one that left me a bit puzzled initially, 00:08:08.62\00:08:10.92 because why would God call me at this point of my life, 00:08:10.95\00:08:14.32 where I practiced dentistry for 37 years 00:08:14.36\00:08:17.36 and to come into ministry. 00:08:17.39\00:08:18.73 And so, when our Central California Conference 00:08:18.76\00:08:21.86 initiated the program for Life Hope Centers, 00:08:21.90\00:08:24.93 and they called me to help develop the program. 00:08:24.97\00:08:27.64 It was so exciting to realize it. 00:08:27.67\00:08:30.37 Here God had been preparing me all along, 00:08:30.41\00:08:33.31 for combining ministry 00:08:33.34\00:08:35.24 with the practice of health and dentistry. 00:08:35.28\00:08:37.41 That's wonderful. 00:08:37.45\00:08:38.78 Now, you also mentioned 00:08:38.81\00:08:40.15 there's a vision component as well, 00:08:40.18\00:08:41.62 who cares for that side of things? 00:08:41.65\00:08:42.98 You know, we have dedicated volunteers. 00:08:43.02\00:08:45.45 You know, we have 00:08:45.49\00:08:46.82 over half a million dollars worth of equipment, 00:08:46.86\00:08:48.79 but the most important and essential component 00:08:48.82\00:08:52.93 of our Life Hope Centers Ministry 00:08:52.96\00:08:55.00 are the volunteers. 00:08:55.03\00:08:56.67 And so we depend, 00:08:56.70\00:08:59.60 very importantly, on our volunteers, 00:08:59.63\00:09:01.37 we have a team of dedicated volunteer 00:09:01.40\00:09:04.21 optometrists and vision team to join us. 00:09:04.24\00:09:07.58 We are also very intentional in terms of incorporating 00:09:07.61\00:09:11.61 about one-third of our volunteers 00:09:11.65\00:09:13.45 as non-Adventists. 00:09:13.48\00:09:14.82 Wonderful. 00:09:14.85\00:09:16.18 We'd like to have the opportunity 00:09:16.22\00:09:17.79 that provides us mixing shoulders 00:09:17.82\00:09:22.62 with non-Adventist professionals. 00:09:22.66\00:09:24.69 We had one instance 00:09:24.73\00:09:26.06 where we had a program in a local community, 00:09:26.09\00:09:29.93 we've had served over 300 individuals that day. 00:09:29.96\00:09:33.07 And at the end of the day, 00:09:33.10\00:09:35.34 we had a lounge set up for our volunteers 00:09:35.37\00:09:37.74 and I was, you know, 00:09:37.77\00:09:41.51 eating and conversing with two fellow colleagues 00:09:41.54\00:09:44.78 who I presumed were Adventist 00:09:44.81\00:09:46.88 until one of them asked me, 00:09:46.92\00:09:48.55 "You know, I'm just impressed 00:09:48.58\00:09:50.55 by the logistics of Life Hope Centers, 00:09:50.59\00:09:54.02 you know, what is it? 00:09:54.06\00:09:55.39 What is it about this that you're so passionate about?" 00:09:55.42\00:09:59.39 And then his colleagues said, 00:09:59.43\00:10:00.83 "Well, all I know about Seventh-day Adventist is that 00:10:00.86\00:10:03.87 it's a cult." 00:10:03.90\00:10:05.63 And then he came back and commented, 00:10:05.67\00:10:07.40 "You know, all I've heard about Seventh-day Adventists 00:10:07.44\00:10:09.84 is what you don't eat." 00:10:09.87\00:10:11.21 What? 00:10:11.24\00:10:12.57 And before I had an opportunity to respond, 00:10:12.61\00:10:15.51 he came around and the other partner 00:10:15.54\00:10:17.75 or colleague had commented, 00:10:17.78\00:10:19.68 "What is it about Seventh-day Adventists 00:10:19.71\00:10:22.35 that you believe. 00:10:22.38\00:10:23.72 What do Adventists believe?" 00:10:23.75\00:10:25.25 And so therein came the opportunity to talk to them 00:10:25.29\00:10:27.96 about Jesus. 00:10:27.99\00:10:29.56 And I would venture to say that 00:10:29.59\00:10:30.93 we'd be hard pressed finding two individuals like this 00:10:30.96\00:10:33.60 walking into our churches and asking that question. 00:10:33.63\00:10:35.66 Exactly. 00:10:35.70\00:10:37.03 And yet it was in this setting 00:10:37.07\00:10:38.40 that Spirit of God move their hearts 00:10:38.43\00:10:40.17 and open them to inquire. 00:10:40.20\00:10:42.44 So not only you touching the lives of people 00:10:42.47\00:10:44.91 you're serving, 00:10:44.94\00:10:46.27 but the people who are serving with you. 00:10:46.31\00:10:47.98 Exactly, exactly. 00:10:48.01\00:10:49.58 So you're very intentional 00:10:49.61\00:10:51.31 and intentional in not only caring 00:10:51.35\00:10:53.38 for the physical needs of people, 00:10:53.42\00:10:54.75 but also their spiritual needs. 00:10:54.78\00:10:56.12 Yes, yes. 00:10:56.15\00:10:57.49 We know that when we follow Christ's method, 00:10:57.52\00:11:00.76 Christ's method alone is the most successful method 00:11:00.79\00:11:03.63 for reaching others. 00:11:03.66\00:11:05.03 And He mingled with a desire to seek those, 00:11:05.06\00:11:08.00 so it was mingling with intentionality. 00:11:08.03\00:11:10.40 And He sympathized. 00:11:10.43\00:11:11.77 You can't sympathize with people 00:11:11.80\00:11:13.13 without being in the midst of them 00:11:13.17\00:11:15.10 and understanding their needs. 00:11:15.14\00:11:16.97 And then He was able to serve and treat them. 00:11:17.01\00:11:20.38 And as a result of accomplishing that, 00:11:20.41\00:11:23.38 then He bid them to follow. 00:11:23.41\00:11:25.38 And so Life Hope Centers is in essence 00:11:25.41\00:11:28.48 fulfilling that model of Christ method alone.
