Welcome back to Baltimore City. 00:00:08.27\00:00:10.04 And behind me, you can see one of the cannons here 00:00:10.07\00:00:12.27 at Fort McHenry Park 00:00:12.31\00:00:14.01 at the entrance to Baltimore's inner harbor. 00:00:14.04\00:00:16.91 Next up, Dr. Oscar Osindo 00:00:16.95\00:00:19.45 talks about some of the challenges 00:00:19.48\00:00:21.18 of working cross-culturally. 00:00:21.22\00:00:23.35 My name is Oscar Osindo. 00:00:23.39\00:00:25.85 I work for the Institute of World Mission. 00:00:25.89\00:00:31.03 I'm an associate director alongside Ronald Kuhn, 00:00:31.06\00:00:36.03 as well as our director, Cheryl Doss. 00:00:36.06\00:00:38.43 The Lord has called all of us onto the mission field. 00:00:41.27\00:00:45.67 And the Lord has called you 00:00:45.71\00:00:47.71 and everyone on the mission field 00:00:47.74\00:00:49.41 and that means working cross-culturally. 00:00:49.44\00:00:53.68 The Lord says, "Come and let us reason together." 00:00:53.72\00:00:57.72 And so the Lord is calling you to go on the field and reason, 00:00:57.75\00:01:03.86 reason with the people, 00:01:03.89\00:01:05.99 reason on the mission field, reason missiologically. 00:01:06.03\00:01:09.73 But then as we do that, there are challenges, 00:01:09.76\00:01:14.50 there are barriers that we meet because every people group, 00:01:14.54\00:01:19.61 every society have their own peculiar ways 00:01:19.64\00:01:23.75 of doing things of thinking. 00:01:23.78\00:01:27.32 They have their own ways of looking at things, 00:01:27.35\00:01:31.99 manners and customs as well. 00:01:32.02\00:01:34.52 And so when we go from where we come from, 00:01:34.56\00:01:37.23 we also have our own culture. 00:01:37.26\00:01:38.99 We also have our own way of how we do things, 00:01:39.03\00:01:43.83 our own behaviors, 00:01:43.87\00:01:45.60 and there is likely to be a clash, 00:01:45.63\00:01:48.84 the clash of cultures, a clash of values, 00:01:48.87\00:01:55.58 even a clash of worldviews, 00:01:55.61\00:01:59.38 and so then what do we do? 00:01:59.41\00:02:04.35 That is why we as the institute are here for you. 00:02:04.39\00:02:08.76 We're here for you. 00:02:08.79\00:02:10.13 Now take for example, 00:02:10.16\00:02:15.50 even a simple thing like greetings, 00:02:15.53\00:02:20.17 cultures have different way that they greet. 00:02:20.20\00:02:23.71 In other cultures, people stretch hands and shake. 00:02:23.74\00:02:28.01 In other cultures, 00:02:28.04\00:02:30.01 people don't stretch their hands, 00:02:30.05\00:02:32.48 they don't shake. 00:02:32.51\00:02:34.48 People may do like that in other cultures, 00:02:34.52\00:02:37.69 other cultures people just do like them, 00:02:37.72\00:02:40.19 other cultures people hug. 00:02:40.22\00:02:41.92 And those are simple things that we need to be aware 00:02:41.96\00:02:46.16 and they actually cause challenges 00:02:46.19\00:02:48.96 and obstacles when we go on to the mission field. 00:02:49.00\00:02:52.77 So how do we then reason missiologically 00:02:52.80\00:02:56.44 with the people that we work amongst 00:02:56.47\00:02:59.27 so that then we can be able to bring to them 00:02:59.31\00:03:03.85 the good news of Jesus Christ? 00:03:03.88\00:03:06.65 Even as we do these, even as we think 00:03:10.65\00:03:12.92 of cross-cultural witnessing, even as we think of culture, 00:03:12.95\00:03:16.32 we still privilege the Word of God. 00:03:16.36\00:03:18.63 The Word of God is above culture, 00:03:18.66\00:03:22.10 but humans operate within specific 00:03:22.13\00:03:25.87 and given cultures 00:03:25.90\00:03:28.90 that create obstacles and barriers that we need 00:03:28.94\00:03:32.27 to overcome. 00:03:32.31\00:03:35.64 I just mentioned worldview. 00:03:35.68\00:03:38.81 Worldview is like a set of glasses 00:03:38.85\00:03:43.32 through which we see everything. 00:03:43.35\00:03:45.32 And every society has their own set of glasses, 00:03:45.35\00:03:50.26 through which they see, they view the world. 00:03:50.29\00:03:54.80 They think through that. 00:03:54.83\00:03:56.90 We also have hours and when we meet with such, 00:03:56.93\00:04:00.44 then what do we have? We have a clash of worldviews. 00:04:00.47\00:04:06.17 So then what do we need to do? 00:04:06.21\00:04:11.11 We need tools that will help us 00:04:11.15\00:04:15.05 to go across these cultures, 00:04:15.08\00:04:18.05 to go across these different customs and manners. 00:04:18.09\00:04:24.06 And therefore, our recommendation, 00:04:24.09\00:04:26.59 my recommendation is we need an ethnographic mindset. 00:04:26.63\00:04:31.70 What is an ethnographic mindset or ethnographic thinking? 00:04:31.73\00:04:36.60 That helps us to actually bridge 00:04:36.64\00:04:39.11 between insiders and outsiders. 00:04:39.14\00:04:43.58 Remember, when you go to a community, 00:04:43.61\00:04:45.85 you are an outsider, they are the insiders. 00:04:45.88\00:04:49.02 So you need an ethnographic thinking 00:04:49.05\00:04:52.29 that will help you to bridge these two. 00:04:52.32\00:04:56.09 And so we welcome you. 00:04:56.12\00:04:58.69 If you are thinking of going overseas 00:04:58.73\00:05:02.66 on the mission field, come to the mission institute. 00:05:02.70\00:05:07.14 Join other missionaries. 00:05:07.17\00:05:09.57 The setting is a round table, sit around tables, 00:05:09.60\00:05:12.71 discuss with other missionaries 00:05:12.74\00:05:14.84 and interact with other missionaries. 00:05:14.88\00:05:17.48 Hear from us. 00:05:17.51\00:05:18.85 Let's share your view and let's help to equip you 00:05:18.88\00:05:22.52 for the mission field. 00:05:22.55\00:05:26.52 I'm looking forward to seeing you 00:05:26.55\00:05:28.86 at the next Mission Institute. 00:05:28.89\00:05:32.63 Next up let's travel to the country of Georgia 00:05:32.66\00:05:35.16 and see how Adventists are creatively engaging 00:05:35.20\00:05:38.20 with their community. 00:05:38.23\00:05:39.80 It's a busy day at the park. 00:05:48.48\00:05:50.48 Almost 70 people have come to experience the Seventh-day 00:05:50.51\00:05:54.12 Adventist church's community health expo. 00:05:54.15\00:05:57.39 In the country of Georgia, 00:05:57.42\00:05:58.79 Adventists regularly hold events 00:05:58.82\00:06:00.89 focused on meeting people's needs 00:06:00.92\00:06:02.79 and connecting with community members. 00:06:02.82\00:06:05.06 In this small city, people are interested in learning more 00:06:05.09\00:06:07.50 about healthy living, 00:06:07.53\00:06:08.86 so Adventists worked with the local government 00:06:08.90\00:06:11.33 to arrange this special event. 00:06:11.37\00:06:13.47 Eight health stations line the walkway 00:06:13.50\00:06:15.40 for people to visit. 00:06:15.44\00:06:16.77 Each station demonstrates a different principle 00:06:16.81\00:06:18.77 for health. 00:06:18.81\00:06:20.14 From fresh air to exercise, visitors get a holistic look 00:06:20.18\00:06:23.55 at healthy living and learn firsthand 00:06:23.58\00:06:25.85 how to practice these concepts in their own lives. 00:06:25.88\00:06:29.05 Young Adventists in Georgia created a group called Reflect. 00:06:29.08\00:06:32.25 The main goal of Reflect is for Adventist youth 00:06:35.19\00:06:38.96 to meet other young people and build good relationships. 00:06:38.99\00:06:42.90 We want to bring more youth to God. 00:06:42.93\00:06:45.50 We chose the name Reflect 00:06:45.53\00:06:47.20 because we want to show the youth 00:06:47.24\00:06:49.17 how to shine and reflect good, positive things. 00:06:49.20\00:06:54.48 With one Global Mission pioneer's help, 00:06:54.51\00:06:56.61 Reflect continues to grow as they co-host events 00:06:56.64\00:06:59.71 such as art programs, movie nights, 00:06:59.75\00:07:01.85 and community outreach activities 00:07:01.88\00:07:03.82 like this health expo. 00:07:03.85\00:07:05.79 Just before an event like this starts, 00:07:05.82\00:07:08.26 young Adventists split into groups 00:07:08.29\00:07:10.46 and invite people throughout the neighborhood 00:07:10.49\00:07:11.99 to visit the expo. 00:07:12.03\00:07:13.36 After the final station, people find out more 00:07:24.14\00:07:26.84 about opportunities to connect with Adventists. 00:07:26.88\00:07:30.01 Many of the attendees leave their feedback, 00:07:30.05\00:07:32.15 sharing that they appreciated learning new ways 00:07:32.18\00:07:34.38 to live healthfully. 00:07:34.42\00:07:36.72 Events like this help build relationships 00:07:36.75\00:07:39.12 and are strengthened by having a good reputation 00:07:39.15\00:07:41.39 among the people. 00:07:41.42\00:07:42.89 Global Mission pioneers like Tea open doors 00:07:42.92\00:07:46.03 to the community. 00:07:46.06\00:07:47.46 Because of the relationships she built, 00:07:47.50\00:07:49.53 many people came to learn about what the health expo 00:07:49.56\00:07:52.17 had to offer. 00:07:52.20\00:07:53.80 Aside from health, Tea also found that 00:07:53.84\00:07:55.90 the local children were eager to learn about the Bible. 00:07:55.94\00:07:58.97 So she created a series of Bible lessons 00:07:59.01\00:08:01.28 and held weekly studies with the kids. 00:08:01.31\00:08:04.18 This program is only 12 lessons, 00:08:04.21\00:08:05.91 but the kids wanted to continue. 00:08:05.95\00:08:07.55 They felt sad that they had completed all the lessons, 00:08:07.58\00:08:10.15 so I had to create more for them. 00:08:10.19\00:08:12.52 On this Sabbath morning, 00:08:12.55\00:08:13.89 Tea is holding a graduation ceremony 00:08:13.92\00:08:15.79 for everyone who completed this round of Bible studies. 00:08:15.82\00:08:19.23 The youth proudly demonstrate the things they learned 00:08:19.26\00:08:21.76 through songs, skits, and reciting memory verses. 00:08:21.80\00:08:24.97 Some of their family members 00:08:25.00\00:08:26.33 even came to show their support. 00:08:26.37\00:08:28.57 Soon many of these young graduates 00:08:28.60\00:08:30.41 will connect with the Reflect group 00:08:30.44\00:08:32.37 so they can continue being the hands and feet 00:08:32.41\00:08:35.08 of Jesus and find fellowship in service. 00:08:35.11\00:08:38.65 Tea's efforts, along with the work 00:08:38.68\00:08:40.42 of hundreds of Global Mission pioneers 00:08:40.45\00:08:42.18 around the world are winning young people 00:08:42.22\00:08:44.69 to God's Kingdom. 00:08:44.72\00:08:46.65 Thank you for your continued prayers 00:08:46.69\00:08:48.56 and selfless gifts. 00:08:48.59\00:08:50.33 Please consider how you can support pioneers like Tea 00:08:50.36\00:08:53.60 through faithful giving to Global Mission. 00:08:53.63\00:08:55.66 Thank you very much for supporting Global Mission 00:08:59.53\00:09:01.90 and projects like these. 00:09:01.94\00:09:03.27 Well, that's about it for today's
