A center of influence helps children in Trinidad, 00:00:06.50\00:00:09.90 a prayer map that looks like a subway map, 00:00:09.94\00:00:12.91 and the beginnings of Adventist work in the city 00:00:12.94\00:00:15.61 of San Francisco, coming up next. 00:00:15.64\00:00:17.78 Hello and welcome to Mission 360. 00:00:51.68\00:00:53.78 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:53.82\00:00:55.35 Today's program is coming to you from the city 00:00:55.38\00:00:57.45 of San Francisco in California. 00:00:57.49\00:01:00.56 And I'm standing on Market Street, 00:01:00.59\00:01:02.82 which is one of the busy thoroughfares of the city. 00:01:02.86\00:01:06.09 Now Market Street is a fascinating hub 00:01:06.13\00:01:09.23 for the city. 00:01:09.26\00:01:10.60 And I'd like to take you back in time, 00:01:10.63\00:01:12.33 back to 1906 to April, 14. 00:01:12.37\00:01:16.20 And here you can see that it was a very different 00:01:16.24\00:01:18.67 world back then. 00:01:18.71\00:01:20.88 And in the early 1900s, and the late 1800s, 00:01:20.91\00:01:24.05 the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:01:24.08\00:01:26.35 ran several urban centers 00:01:26.38\00:01:28.28 of influence right here in San Francisco. 00:01:28.32\00:01:30.95 In fact, a couple of them are right here on Market Street, 00:01:30.99\00:01:34.16 a restaurant called the Vegetarian that was opened 00:01:34.19\00:01:37.46 in 1899, 00:01:37.49\00:01:39.13 and also a branch of St. Helena Sanitarium, 00:01:39.16\00:01:43.10 urban centers of influence are centers 00:01:43.13\00:01:45.57 that put into practice Christ's method of ministry. 00:01:45.60\00:01:48.90 And around the world today, we need many, 00:01:48.94\00:01:51.34 many more to show the love of Jesus. 00:01:51.37\00:01:53.78 We're going to be looking at mission around the world today. 00:01:53.81\00:01:56.11 But first up, let's travel to Trinidad 00:01:56.14\00:01:59.21 and there we will see a center of influence in action. 00:01:59.25\00:02:01.65 A ray of hope beams in the Brickfieldcommunity 00:02:04.82\00:02:07.39 on the island of Trinidad. 00:02:07.42\00:02:09.32 Through a Life Hope Center, 00:02:09.36\00:02:10.99 people's lives are changed in an incredible way. 00:02:11.03\00:02:14.70 One of the largest Hindu temples in the country 00:02:14.73\00:02:17.13 is just a few short blocks from this center. 00:02:17.17\00:02:21.54 As visitors passed by on the street, 00:02:21.57\00:02:23.71 their curiosity is piqued by this sign, 00:02:23.74\00:02:26.81 and they go in to see what is happening. 00:02:26.84\00:02:29.54 Many people who come inside find a variety of services 00:02:29.58\00:02:33.15 aimed at meeting the needs of this community. 00:02:33.18\00:02:36.02 At the Life Hope Center, before we started any course, 00:02:36.05\00:02:39.65 we did a needs assessment. 00:02:39.69\00:02:41.32 And we found out that the children here 00:02:41.36\00:02:43.96 are not good readers. 00:02:43.99\00:02:45.86 And so we targeted the children, 00:02:45.89\00:02:48.23 and we also targeted the parents 00:02:48.26\00:02:50.27 because the children will come soon with them. 00:02:50.30\00:02:52.67 So we have the math class, we have homework class, 00:02:52.70\00:02:55.24 and we have pre-school going here every week. 00:02:55.27\00:02:58.51 And then we had people who were sick and needed 00:02:58.54\00:03:01.28 a new lifestyle, and we started a health-fitness class. 00:03:01.31\00:03:04.58 So basically every day, 00:03:04.61\00:03:07.72 four times of the week we are here 00:03:07.75\00:03:09.58 with all those classes that I just mentioned. 00:03:09.62\00:03:12.45 Some children in this community are not able 00:03:12.49\00:03:14.66 to attend public schools 00:03:14.69\00:03:16.46 because they don't have the proper documentation. 00:03:16.49\00:03:19.03 For them, the Life Hope Center is their only hope 00:03:19.06\00:03:22.50 to receive something similar to a formal education. 00:03:22.53\00:03:26.37 Children, ages 6 to 15, 00:03:26.40\00:03:28.20 come to learn to read and write, 00:03:28.24\00:03:30.21 to develop math skills, 00:03:30.24\00:03:31.61 and to receive physical and spiritual training. 00:03:31.64\00:03:34.88 For adults, fitness and healthy living classes 00:03:34.91\00:03:37.68 are offered to increase longevity 00:03:37.71\00:03:39.75 and to fight off disease. 00:03:39.78\00:03:41.55 Many have benefited from the courses. 00:03:41.58\00:03:43.35 And as they leave, 00:03:43.39\00:03:44.72 they display a new and positive outlook on life. 00:03:44.75\00:03:47.72 I was feeling sick, 00:03:47.76\00:03:49.09 and with exercise and the control of the diet, 00:03:49.12\00:03:52.49 I stopped my tablet, 00:03:52.53\00:03:54.33 and I am feeling happy to do things 00:03:54.36\00:03:55.80 I couldn't do before, I am doing now. 00:03:55.83\00:03:57.47 You know, at the age of 55. 00:03:57.50\00:03:59.73 I thought it was impossible. 00:03:59.77\00:04:01.97 And I want to say thanks to all the members 00:04:02.00\00:04:03.77 of the Life Hope Center for this opportunity 00:04:03.81\00:04:06.81 because I have learned a lot. 00:04:06.84\00:04:08.68 I have learned to become a nicer person too. 00:04:08.71\00:04:11.31 I have a lot more patience, which I didn't have before. 00:04:11.35\00:04:14.85 It helped me in more ways than I know. 00:04:14.88\00:04:17.45 In addition to intellectual and physical training, 00:04:17.49\00:04:20.22 some people have found hope in Jesus 00:04:20.26\00:04:22.52 at the Brickfield Life Hope Center. 00:04:22.56\00:04:24.99 Now it's quite normal for the staff 00:04:25.03\00:04:26.93 to receive requests for spiritual counseling 00:04:26.96\00:04:29.26 and Bible lessons. 00:04:29.30\00:04:30.97 In this community, 00:04:31.00\00:04:32.33 the center's holistic approach has proven priceless. 00:04:32.37\00:04:36.00 And we believe in mingling with the people mixing 00:04:36.04\00:04:38.87 with them, befriending them by offering different courses, 00:04:38.91\00:04:43.14 things that they need. 00:04:43.18\00:04:45.25 Well, some of the changes I have seen is that 00:04:45.28\00:04:48.48 some of these people who are here, 00:04:48.52\00:04:50.95 they ask us to pray for them. 00:04:50.99\00:04:53.72 We are having Bible studies with them. 00:04:53.76\00:04:56.29 And we even raised a church because of this center. 00:04:56.32\00:04:59.23 We now have 25 people. 00:04:59.26\00:05:01.90 Please pray for the Brickfield Life Hope Center 00:05:01.93\00:05:04.40 in Trinidad as they work to befriend, serve, 00:05:04.43\00:05:07.87 and win the confidence of people in the region. 00:05:07.90\00:05:09.97 My guest here in Oakland, California is Chef Chew. 00:05:17.91\00:05:21.18 And, Chef Chew, thank you for joining us. 00:05:21.22\00:05:23.22 Absolutely. 00:05:23.25\00:05:24.59 And we're on your territory here. 00:05:24.62\00:05:25.95 Behind us is the Veg Hub. 00:05:25.99\00:05:27.32 What is the Veg Hub? 00:05:27.36\00:05:28.69 Oh, the Veg Hub is actually a vegan restaurant. 00:05:28.72\00:05:31.16 We actually are urban sort of influence right at 00:05:37.33\00:05:39.10 cooking classes. 00:05:39.13\00:05:40.47 And most importantly, we are an example for Christ. 00:05:40.50\00:05:42.27 Fantastic. You know, it's there. 00:05:42.30\00:05:43.64 Yeah. So describe where we are. 00:05:43.67\00:05:45.57 We're on a street here. Where are we? 00:05:45.61\00:05:47.84 Well, this is a center area to Oakland. 00:05:47.88\00:05:50.08 It's actually called MacArthur Boulevard, 00:05:50.11\00:05:51.45 it's actually pretty much one of the original streets 00:05:51.48\00:05:53.88 in Oakland. 00:05:53.92\00:05:55.25 It's actually in the heart of Oakland 00:05:55.28\00:05:56.62 where you have more rural, 00:05:56.65\00:05:58.92 I guess the more affluent areas of Oakland, 00:05:58.95\00:06:00.59 as well as you can say, 00:06:00.62\00:06:02.26 the more low-income neighborhoods as well. 00:06:02.29\00:06:03.66 So right in the mix of both neighborhood 00:06:03.69\00:06:05.59 or economical groups. 00:06:05.63\00:06:08.06 And so we're actually the place where it's very diverse, 00:06:08.10\00:06:11.30 very many different types of ethnic groups out here, 00:06:11.33\00:06:14.14 a lot of millennials also live close by as well. 00:06:14.17\00:06:16.64 So it's a very great location in Oakland, 00:06:16.67\00:06:18.97 where we can serve great food. 00:06:19.01\00:06:20.34 Terrific. 00:06:20.38\00:06:21.71 Well, why don't you show us into the restaurant? 00:06:21.74\00:06:23.08 Absolutely. Absolutely. 00:09:25.69\00:09:27.03 We believe that the key to change is education. 00:09:27.06\00:09:28.46 Right. 00:09:28.50\00:09:29.83 So we have a room where we do our cooking classes 00:09:29.86\00:09:31.20 on a regular basis. 00:09:31.23\00:09:32.57 So we do classes myself and one of our team members. 00:09:32.60\00:09:35.57 We have classes for kids. 00:09:35.60\00:09:37.54 So we have the Auntie Sarah's cooking class, 00:09:37.57\00:09:39.27 she does classes for, you know, kids, 00:09:39.31\00:09:42.04 young people in elementary school 00:09:42.08\00:09:43.91 and middle school. 00:09:43.95\00:09:45.28 But then we also do classes for adults the Chop 00:09:45.31\00:09:47.02 and Chewclasses. 00:09:47.05\00:09:48.38 And back here, you can kind of see 00:09:48.42\00:09:49.75 our production area/classroom. 00:09:49.78\00:09:52.85 So we actually have a classroom 00:09:52.89\00:09:54.69 that we actually do cooking classes 00:09:54.72\00:09:56.29 as well for the community. 00:09:56.32\00:09:58.03 And you know, sometimes you see us with 8 or 10 kids 00:09:58.06\00:10:01.06 in here, doing hands-on instruction. 00:10:01.10\00:10:03.13 You know, we had this whole room filled up 00:10:03.16\00:10:04.63 with kids or adults and teach them 00:10:04.67\00:10:06.70 how to eat healthy and cook healthy. 00:10:06.74\00:10:08.07 Fantastic. 00:10:08.10\00:10:09.44 Yeah, and this is, you know, the cooking classes 00:10:09.47\00:10:10.81 is amazing because it really 00:10:10.84\00:10:12.17 helps us to build relationships. 00:10:12.21\00:10:13.54 It kind of goes deeper into this food 00:10:13.58\00:10:15.51 because now they see that we care about them. 00:10:15.54\00:10:17.68 So we're more than just a restaurant, you know, 00:10:17.71\00:10:19.38 we are a restaurant that actually educates 00:10:19.41\00:10:21.15 and loves them as well. 00:10:21.18\00:10:22.52 So it makes a big difference. Terrific. 00:10:22.55\00:10:23.89 Now, obviously, you got nutrition, 00:10:23.92\00:10:26.92 you've got more healthful living, 00:10:26.96\00:10:28.39 you're building connections. 00:10:28.42\00:10:30.13 I heard you mentioned once that 00:10:30.16\00:10:32.06 this is also a social justice issue 00:10:32.09\00:10:34.33 for particularly inner-city neighborhoods. 00:10:34.36\00:10:36.77 Can you tell us a little bit about that? 00:10:36.80\00:10:38.13 Absolutely. 00:10:38.17\00:10:39.50 You know, we're super close right here, 00:10:39.53\00:10:40.87 we're not too far from a place called East Oakland, 00:10:40.90\00:10:42.54 and then you have Deep East Oakland 00:10:42.57\00:10:43.94 about three miles from Deep East Oakland. 00:10:43.97\00:10:45.81 It's pretty much a food desert. 00:10:45.84\00:10:47.18 And a food desert, something call it food swamps, 00:10:47.21\00:10:49.54 it's pretty much an area where you don't have 00:10:49.58\00:10:51.25 a lot of access to healthy foods. 00:10:51.28\00:10:53.55 So pretty much anything, 00:10:53.58\00:10:54.92 but obviously vegan would be nonexistent, 00:10:54.95\00:10:56.28 but definitely it's a high concentration 00:10:56.32\00:10:57.99 of everything from liquor stores 00:10:58.02\00:10:59.55 to convenience stores to hot fatty foods, 00:10:59.59\00:11:02.09 fast food restaurants. 00:11:02.12\00:11:03.63 And then, you know, the foods when you go 00:11:03.66\00:11:05.16 into places where you eat at, 00:11:05.19\00:11:07.33 typically they're barred up, you know, 00:11:07.36\00:11:10.03 people think they're going to have a lot of theft. 00:11:10.07\00:11:11.63 And so it's not a really good place 00:11:11.67\00:11:13.00 that you just want to go eat. 00:11:13.03\00:11:14.37 Right. 00:11:14.40\00:11:15.74 And so sadly in those environments, 00:11:15.77\00:11:17.11 you don't have a lot of these healthy options. 00:11:17.14\00:11:18.77 And so a lot of our mission as a company, 00:11:18.81\00:11:20.74 as the Veg Hub, 00:11:20.78\00:11:22.28 is really is to democratize the access to healthy foods, 00:11:22.31\00:11:25.31 to really create a product that's healthy, 00:11:25.35\00:11:27.62 that's nutritious, but also affordable. 00:11:27.65\00:11:29.35 You know, I read a long ago, you know, 00:11:29.38\00:11:30.79 when Ellen White wrote about in the restaurant work, 00:11:30.82\00:11:33.22 she mentioned that the health food should be 00:11:33.25\00:11:34.66 affordable for all people so that all people 00:11:34.69\00:11:36.46 in any neighborhood, 00:11:36.49\00:11:37.83 in any community can actually be able 00:11:37.86\00:11:39.19 to afford the foods. 00:11:39.23\00:11:40.56 So we want to be able to make our products affordable 00:11:40.60\00:11:42.16 and also educate, you know, 00:11:42.20\00:11:44.13 groups that simply don't have access 00:11:44.17\00:11:45.67 to these products, and they can do it themselves. 00:11:45.70\00:11:48.07 They can actually, you know, eat healthy, 00:11:48.10\00:11:49.60 and it can be affordable and nutritious. 00:11:49.64\00:11:50.97 Fantastic. Yeah. 00:11:51.01\00:11:52.34 So there's a real deep issue of, you know, 00:11:52.37\00:11:53.81 these communities are suffering, 00:11:53.84\00:11:55.41 high rates of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, 00:11:55.44\00:11:58.11 all these things are running rampant in these communities. 00:11:58.15\00:12:01.15 And so unless we have solutions, I mean, 00:12:01.18\00:12:03.18 the consistency of seeing early premature death 00:12:03.22\00:12:06.05 is what we're gonna see on a regular basis 00:12:06.09\00:12:07.56 in these communities. 00:12:07.59\00:12:09.09 So, yes, we have a real big passion 00:12:09.12\00:12:10.73 and a heart for able to help solve some of those issues 00:12:10.76\00:12:13.40 in our community. 00:12:13.43\00:12:14.76 So because of where you're located, 00:12:14.80\00:12:16.13 you're getting quite a diverse clientele. 00:12:16.16\00:12:17.93 Absolutely. Yeah. 00:12:17.97\00:12:19.30 I mean, again, you know, 00:12:19.33\00:12:20.67 we get many different nationalities, 00:12:20.70\00:12:22.64 obviously, blacks and whites, 00:12:22.67\00:12:24.01 we get Hispanics, we get Indians, 00:12:24.04\00:12:25.71 we have a big Indian population because a lot of them 00:12:25.74\00:12:27.88 are actually don't eat beef and things like that. 00:12:27.91\00:12:29.64 So they look for vegetarian options. 00:12:29.68\00:12:31.91 We also get a lot of millennials 00:12:31.95\00:12:33.62 of all different nationalities, which is pretty amazing. 00:12:33.65\00:12:37.02 We also get different socioeconomic classes. 00:12:37.05\00:12:39.09 And again, since we're like into segue 00:12:39.12\00:12:40.46 between the more fluent community 00:12:40.49\00:12:42.36 and also more of, you know, lower economical communities, 00:12:42.39\00:12:46.29 we actually get both groups 00:12:46.33\00:12:47.66 that come inside this restaurant, 00:12:47.70\00:12:49.03 which is pretty amazing. 00:12:49.06\00:12:50.40 Because typically, vegan restaurants 00:12:50.43\00:12:51.77 are not located in a more, 00:12:51.80\00:12:53.47 you know, low-income neighborhoods. 00:12:53.50\00:12:54.84 So we're kind of right between the two. 00:12:54.87\00:12:56.57 So we get both groups 00:12:56.60\00:12:57.94 that come faithfully and support us. 00:12:57.97\00:12:59.31 So it's really, really a blessing. 00:12:59.34\00:13:00.68 Fantastic. 00:13:00.71\00:13:02.04 What are your hopes for the future? 00:13:02.08\00:13:03.41 You know, my vision, man, I want to see 00:13:03.45\00:13:05.51 the Adventist vegan franchise, you know? 00:13:05.55\00:13:09.62 Ellen White wrote in 1902 that we should have restaurants, 00:13:09.65\00:13:12.25 you know, in different cities as urban centers. 00:13:12.29\00:13:14.46 Including Oakland. Including Oakland. 00:13:14.49\00:13:16.02 She mentioned my name in San Francisco and Oakland. 00:13:16.06\00:13:18.29 So I like to say we're living the page. 00:13:18.33\00:13:20.23 We've been filling the prophecy. 00:13:20.26\00:13:21.60 And so I just feel like at certain times I believe God 00:13:21.63\00:13:24.23 is calling us to see this work go forward, 00:13:24.27\00:13:27.20 but not in a way this to make money, 00:13:27.24\00:13:29.24 but really in a way that can give Him all the glory. 00:13:29.27\00:13:31.61 I believe that the time is now, 00:13:31.64\00:13:33.04 we've never seen a time where veganism 00:13:33.07\00:13:35.01 has grown 600% in the last few years. 00:13:35.04\00:13:37.81 You find basketball stars 00:13:37.85\00:13:40.02 and sports stars are becoming vegan, you know? 00:13:40.05\00:13:42.58 You know, Hollywood stars are becoming vegan. 00:13:42.62\00:13:45.52 So it's becoming very prominent. 00:13:45.55\00:13:47.19 But it's something that we've known for over 100 years. 00:13:47.22\00:13:49.42 And I believe that we have to reclaim the message, 00:13:49.46\00:13:51.83 bring it to the communities, and I want to say revival. 00:13:51.86\00:13:54.96 So young people actually working in these restaurants, 00:13:55.00\00:13:57.33 creating jobs, creating employment, 00:13:57.37\00:13:58.97 giving back to the community, 00:13:59.00\00:14:00.37 solving some of the social justice issues 00:14:00.40\00:14:02.27 that we're finding in our communities, 00:14:02.30\00:14:03.64 I think we have a voice is like, 00:14:03.67\00:14:05.04 you know, it's like John the Baptist, 00:14:05.07\00:14:06.91 the voice in the wilderness crying out, 00:14:06.94\00:14:08.61 let people know there's something better. 00:14:08.64\00:14:09.98 You know, we don't have to keep dying prematurely. 00:14:10.01\00:14:11.78 We can be healthy, we can eat good, 00:14:11.81\00:14:13.45 it can taste delicious. 00:14:13.48\00:14:14.82 And so I dream in 10 years to see this model 00:14:14.85\00:14:16.65 come together become a reality. 00:14:16.69\00:14:18.45 And I think this is the foundation, 00:14:18.49\00:14:20.12 I think there's people all around the country, 00:14:20.16\00:14:21.59 all around the world, 00:14:21.62\00:14:22.96 who's getting excited about seeing 00:14:22.99\00:14:24.33 a restaurant in their community, 00:14:24.36\00:14:25.69 and I just want to be a part of it. 00:14:25.73\00:14:27.06 I like to say if I get to heaven, 00:14:27.10\00:14:28.66 I don't mind being a janitor in heaven. 00:14:28.70\00:14:30.80 All I could do is sweep the floors in heaven, 00:14:30.83\00:14:32.97 I hope to make some of the meals 00:14:33.00\00:14:34.34 and some of the food in heaven, but hey, 00:14:34.37\00:14:35.70 if I could just be the janitor, I'm happy, man. 00:14:35.74\00:14:37.37 So, you know, restaurant is a lot of work, you know, 00:14:37.41\00:14:39.37 but it's a lot of heart and it's really rewarding 00:14:39.41\00:14:41.64 when you see the smiles on the customers' faces. 00:14:41.68\00:14:43.85 You know, somebody's thankful, God has been really good to us. 00:14:43.88\00:14:46.08 Fantastic. 00:14:46.11\00:14:47.45 Thanks for sharing with us today, Chef Chew. 00:14:47.48\00:14:48.82 Yeah, absolutely.
