Welcome back to Accra, Ghana. 00:00:15.54\00:00:17.31 Behind me, you can see a sea wall 00:00:17.35\00:00:19.01 that was built by slaves. 00:00:19.05\00:00:21.08 And it's symbolic of a very dark history 00:00:21.12\00:00:23.55 where, along this coast of Africa 00:00:23.59\00:00:26.05 between the 16th and 19th century, 00:00:26.09\00:00:28.52 European nations competed trying to get a foothold 00:00:28.56\00:00:31.83 in the slave trade. 00:00:31.86\00:00:33.29 And it's estimated that some 12 million human beings 00:00:33.33\00:00:37.83 were taken against their will 00:00:37.87\00:00:39.77 in terrible conditions across the Atlantic. 00:00:39.80\00:00:42.57 Many of them Ghanaians and taken into slavery 00:00:42.60\00:00:45.57 mainly in the Americas. 00:00:45.61\00:00:47.64 Well, we want to look forward with hope to the future 00:00:47.68\00:00:50.85 and we want to talk about the healing power 00:00:50.88\00:00:53.25 that Jesus can bring. 00:00:53.28\00:00:54.62 And next up, we're going to travel 00:00:54.65\00:00:56.15 to the country of Thailand 00:00:56.18\00:00:58.75 and visit Chiang Mai. 00:00:58.79\00:01:00.32 I work with a Global Mission Center 00:01:01.92\00:01:03.36 for East Asian Religions 00:01:03.39\00:01:04.73 and part of our job is to help the church 00:01:04.76\00:01:06.73 and our church members understand 00:01:06.76\00:01:08.50 how to be more effective in reaching out 00:01:08.53\00:01:10.67 to our East Asian brothers and sisters. 00:01:10.70\00:01:12.87 One of the things that we've discovered 00:01:12.90\00:01:14.64 is that ministry happens 00:01:14.67\00:01:16.74 in unusual places and unusual times. 00:01:16.77\00:01:18.87 So it's not always convenient. 00:01:18.91\00:01:20.58 Ellen White gives us a great quote 00:01:20.61\00:01:22.31 in Ministry of Healing, page 143, 00:01:22.34\00:01:24.75 which says that Christ method alone 00:01:24.78\00:01:27.25 gives true success in ministry. 00:01:27.28\00:01:29.35 And His method was to mingle among people, 00:01:29.38\00:01:32.82 to minister to their needs, to sympathize with them, 00:01:32.85\00:01:35.46 and we have found in our own personal ministry, 00:01:35.49\00:01:37.69 that that really is true. 00:01:37.73\00:01:39.89 One of the stories that we have is the story of our neighbor, 00:01:39.93\00:01:43.13 Uncle Tong Lien. 00:01:43.16\00:01:44.50 He was a great neighbor, 00:01:44.53\00:01:46.70 an elderly man with children 00:01:46.74\00:01:48.37 who were just passed college age, 00:01:48.40\00:01:50.87 and he adopted our kids 00:01:50.91\00:01:52.61 and they called him grandpa and they would go to his house 00:01:52.64\00:01:55.44 and eat fruit off of his fruit trees. 00:01:55.48\00:01:57.61 And we just had a really nice relationship with him. 00:01:57.65\00:02:00.72 One day we came home, we passed this house, 00:02:00.75\00:02:02.68 we noticed there was a large crowd 00:02:02.72\00:02:04.55 gathered outside his house 00:02:04.59\00:02:05.92 and we didn't know what happened. 00:02:05.95\00:02:07.29 We later found out later, few minutes later found out 00:02:07.32\00:02:09.79 that he had had a sudden stroke 00:02:09.82\00:02:11.76 and he passed away quite unexpectedly. 00:02:11.79\00:02:13.70 And the home was just, the family was just devastated. 00:02:13.73\00:02:17.57 And so we went and we decided, 00:02:17.60\00:02:20.17 the best thing to do is to participate 00:02:20.20\00:02:22.34 as best we could as Christians. 00:02:22.37\00:02:23.84 And so, Greg had a camera, 00:02:23.87\00:02:25.97 and he volunteered to be a cameraman for them, 00:02:26.01\00:02:28.68 and just to take pictures, 00:02:28.71\00:02:30.05 and we found that this was a great opportunity 00:02:30.08\00:02:31.58 for us to learn about their culture. 00:02:31.61\00:02:33.31 What happens when people die? 00:02:33.35\00:02:34.88 How do they suffer? 00:02:34.92\00:02:36.25 How do they deal with death in their culture? 00:02:36.28\00:02:38.52 And so we participated as best we could 00:02:38.55\00:02:40.52 in their funeral service. 00:02:40.56\00:02:42.72 Yeah, you know, it actually wasn't a good time. 00:02:42.76\00:02:45.16 We had just started an English language school. 00:02:45.19\00:02:48.00 And that meant that my life was very busy 00:02:48.03\00:02:51.47 as the director of that school, 00:02:51.50\00:02:53.50 and I didn't have time for this, 00:02:53.54\00:02:55.14 but you know what? 00:02:55.17\00:02:56.50 It was very important that we make the time 00:02:56.54\00:02:58.91 because in Romans 15, Paul talks about 00:02:58.94\00:03:00.81 how we should weep with those who weep 00:03:00.84\00:03:02.24 and rejoice with those who rejoice. 00:03:02.28\00:03:04.31 So ministry and mission 00:03:04.35\00:03:06.51 doesn't come to us when we're ready. 00:03:06.55\00:03:08.58 We don't do it when we're ready. 00:03:08.62\00:03:10.32 But mission happens when problems happen. 00:03:10.35\00:03:12.95 That's what the mission is. 00:03:12.99\00:03:14.46 And so here we had an opportunity. 00:03:14.49\00:03:16.39 What would we do? 00:03:16.42\00:03:17.76 Well, there's many parts of the funeral 00:03:17.79\00:03:19.39 in the Buddhist religion 00:03:19.43\00:03:20.76 that we were not comfortable participating in, 00:03:20.80\00:03:22.66 because it's not our religion, 00:03:22.70\00:03:24.07 and it would divide our allegiances 00:03:24.10\00:03:26.50 and our loyalties to God. 00:03:26.53\00:03:27.97 But we found ways that we could help. 00:03:28.00\00:03:30.04 So one of the things I did 00:03:30.07\00:03:31.41 even though I had to go to school during the day, 00:03:31.44\00:03:32.77 in the evening I would come in, 00:03:32.81\00:03:34.54 and I would be a part of the wake there 00:03:34.58\00:03:36.85 all night long, they would stay up with the family, 00:03:36.88\00:03:39.58 they would play poker, they would drink, 00:03:39.61\00:03:44.29 you know, caffeinated beverages to stay awake 00:03:44.32\00:03:46.15 and all of these things. 00:03:46.19\00:03:47.52 So I went there to be a part of that 00:03:47.56\00:03:49.22 and to be with them. 00:03:49.26\00:03:50.59 And what I found is that it was hard to stay awake. 00:03:50.63\00:03:55.30 But being there was so important, 00:03:55.33\00:03:57.27 the family wanted that and with those adopt children, 00:03:57.30\00:04:00.80 we would take time. 00:04:00.84\00:04:02.44 And they were playing games 00:04:02.47\00:04:04.17 so I just talked to them while they're playing the games, 00:04:04.21\00:04:05.61 I didn't know how to play the games they were playing. 00:04:05.64\00:04:07.81 But at one point I thought, 00:04:07.84\00:04:09.38 you know, I should bring a game from home. 00:04:09.41\00:04:10.75 So I got some dominoes and brought those over 00:04:10.78\00:04:12.91 and they're like, "Oh, wow, what is this?" 00:04:12.95\00:04:14.28 They haven't played dominoes before. 00:04:14.32\00:04:15.65 So I played it, I taught them how to play 00:04:15.68\00:04:17.02 and they loved the game. 00:04:17.05\00:04:18.39 And we would play and do different things. 00:04:18.42\00:04:20.89 One evening, the village chief came 00:04:20.92\00:04:24.99 and the village chief wanted to, 00:04:25.03\00:04:28.26 you know, be there to honor the family 00:04:28.30\00:04:30.43 because this man had been a leader in the village. 00:04:30.47\00:04:33.13 And, but around 2 o'clock in the morning, 00:04:33.17\00:04:37.67 one of the sisters came to me, 00:04:37.71\00:04:40.21 the daughter of this man who passed away and she said, 00:04:40.24\00:04:43.85 "Greg, do you have coffee in your house? 00:04:43.88\00:04:45.98 We need to give him and we ran out." 00:04:46.01\00:04:48.55 And I said, "No, I don't have any coffee in the house." 00:04:48.58\00:04:50.79 They said, "Okay, well, we're going to go look and see 00:04:50.82\00:04:52.15 if we can buy some." 00:04:52.19\00:04:53.52 I said, "At 2 am?" 00:04:53.56\00:04:54.89 Everything is shut down by nine, 00:04:54.92\00:04:56.26 there's going to be nothing. 00:04:56.29\00:04:57.63 Well, they went and looked 00:04:57.66\00:04:58.99 and sure enough 15 minutes later, 00:04:59.03\00:05:00.83 they drove in on a little motorbike 00:05:00.86\00:05:02.33 and they said, "Oh, there's nothing. 00:05:02.36\00:05:03.70 Are you sure you don't have coffee?" 00:05:03.73\00:05:05.07 And I said, "Well, I do have something. 00:05:05.10\00:05:06.70 What did I have? 00:05:06.74\00:05:08.07 I had Roma, roasted barley type drink, 00:05:08.10\00:05:13.68 no caffeine whatsoever." 00:05:13.71\00:05:15.04 I said, "It won't help him stay awake." 00:05:15.08\00:05:16.41 They said, "It doesn't matter. Just let him have that." 00:05:16.44\00:05:18.48 Well, you know, this is, to make the long story short. 00:05:18.51\00:05:22.02 Over the next few days, 00:05:22.05\00:05:24.79 it was like a five day funeral process. 00:05:24.82\00:05:27.22 We were there the whole time, you washed dishes. 00:05:27.26\00:05:29.56 I would wash dishes. I didn't know how to cook. 00:05:29.59\00:05:31.83 I hardly knew much of the language. 00:05:31.86\00:05:33.40 There wasn't much that I could do. 00:05:33.43\00:05:34.76 But I knew how to wash dishes. 00:05:34.80\00:05:36.13 And so I would argue with them and then sit down 00:05:36.16\00:05:38.83 because they didn't want a foreigner doing this. 00:05:38.87\00:05:40.70 But I insisted and I sat down on the little stool 00:05:40.74\00:05:42.94 and washed dishes and washed dishes 00:05:42.97\00:05:44.64 and washed dishes all day long. 00:05:44.67\00:05:46.37 And then in the evening, Greg and I would trade places 00:05:46.41\00:05:48.54 I would go home, put the children to bed, 00:05:48.58\00:05:50.38 go to bed myself and Greg would stay 00:05:50.41\00:05:51.98 and spend the whole night awake, 00:05:52.01\00:05:53.92 playing dominoes and visiting with a family. 00:05:53.95\00:05:56.02 They so much appreciate our time with them. 00:05:56.05\00:05:58.55 But it wasn't, I don't think two or three months later 00:05:58.59\00:06:01.12 and you got really sick. 00:06:01.16\00:06:02.49 I became very sick and was hospitalized 00:06:03.56\00:06:05.89 across the border in the neighboring country. 00:06:05.93\00:06:08.36 And the family was very, very upset. 00:06:08.40\00:06:10.33 We had become children to them. 00:06:10.37\00:06:11.77 In fact, the mother had said, "You call me Mum, 00:06:11.80\00:06:14.07 you call me mom now. 00:06:14.10\00:06:15.44 And these are your sisters, and this is your brother 00:06:15.47\00:06:17.34 and we are your family." 00:06:17.37\00:06:18.71 And when I became sick and was hospitalized, 00:06:18.74\00:06:20.81 mom was very upset. 00:06:20.84\00:06:22.64 She said she went to her daughter and said, 00:06:22.68\00:06:24.38 "Amy needs, you must go. 00:06:24.41\00:06:26.21 You have to go." 00:06:26.25\00:06:27.58 And they said, "But we can't, we don't have a passport." 00:06:27.62\00:06:29.65 She said, "No, you must go. You have to go." 00:06:29.68\00:06:32.82 Long story short, they weren't able to come 00:06:32.85\00:06:34.62 but she prayed for me. 00:06:34.66\00:06:36.22 And we found out later that 00:06:36.26\00:06:37.59 she was saying her Buddhist prayers, 00:06:37.63\00:06:38.96 but she was praying for me. 00:06:38.99\00:06:40.56 We had become family to them, and we're still family to them. 00:06:40.60\00:06:43.90 And it gave us a great opportunity 00:06:43.93\00:06:45.37 to be able to share our religion, our beliefs, 00:06:45.40\00:06:49.24 and our hope that we have 00:06:49.27\00:06:51.37 that Jesus is coming again with them. 00:06:51.41\00:06:53.27 And it's opened up so many doors with that family 00:06:53.31\00:06:55.34 and it also served as an opening into the community 00:06:55.38\00:06:58.41 because we belong to this family. 00:06:58.45\00:06:59.98 We now belong to that community and had more influence 00:07:00.02\00:07:03.02 with our neighbors 00:07:03.05\00:07:04.39 and the leadership in that little village. 00:07:04.42\00:07:07.22 So anytime you want to make a disciple 00:07:07.26\00:07:09.52 and share Christ with people, 00:07:09.56\00:07:10.89 you have to remember, we have to make Him real 00:07:10.93\00:07:13.53 by our way we live. 00:07:13.56\00:07:15.40 Jesus is not just a doctrine. 00:07:15.43\00:07:17.47 He's a way of life and when He transforms us 00:07:17.50\00:07:20.34 people see that are attracted to Him. 00:07:20.37\00:07:22.07 This is the first step. 00:07:22.10\00:07:23.44 No matter whether people are Buddhist, or Muslim, 00:07:23.47\00:07:26.04 or what country, what faith they are, 00:07:26.07\00:07:27.98 we want to be genuine friends with people. 00:07:28.01\00:07:30.41 If you'd like to learn more about how you can reach out 00:07:30.45\00:07:33.48 to your neighbors, 00:07:33.52\00:07:34.85 go to www.globalmissioncenters.org. 00:07:34.88\00:07:38.05 And if you'd like more information 00:07:38.09\00:07:39.42 on how you can reach your East Asian friends, 00:07:39.45\00:07:41.19 go to cear.globalmissioncenters.org. 00:07:41.22\00:07:46.83 God bless. 00:07:46.86\00:07:48.20 Welcome back to Accra, Ghana, and more specifically, 00:07:49.13\00:07:52.33 to the old castle which is right on the coastline. 00:07:52.37\00:07:55.30 If you ever missed any episodes of Mission 360° 00:07:55.34\00:07:58.11 or you want to look again at some of the interviews 00:07:58.14\00:08:01.11 or some of these short pieces, 00:08:01.14\00:08:03.18 just go to m360.tv any time of day or night 00:08:03.21\00:08:07.02 and you can catch up. 00:08:07.05\00:08:08.38 Next up, we travel back to the South Pacific. 00:08:08.42\00:08:10.42 My name is Jovese. 00:08:15.42\00:08:17.69 I had no place to lay my head, 00:08:17.73\00:08:19.63 and I used to come and sit around in the park 00:08:19.66\00:08:22.20 and no work. 00:08:22.23\00:08:23.57 I go in jail a lot of times. 00:08:23.60\00:08:25.10 And then I met a preacher preaching God's word around. 00:08:25.13\00:08:30.04 And I just joined them 00:08:30.07\00:08:31.41 but I know I'm just coming over to feed. 00:08:31.44\00:08:33.17 Oh, I'm so happy. 00:08:33.21\00:08:35.21 I know here is my place to have dinner 00:08:35.24\00:08:37.61 and lunch and breakfast. 00:08:37.65\00:08:39.71 No more go to jail. 00:08:39.75\00:08:41.65 I got baptized, and I know God now. 00:08:41.68\00:08:44.05 And I stay away from trouble. 00:08:44.09\00:08:46.45 And I see now my body is changing, 00:08:46.49\00:08:49.39 my way too is changing. 00:08:49.42\00:08:51.46 I'm not taking those kinds of things 00:08:51.49\00:08:53.13 that I was taking before. 00:08:53.16\00:08:54.83 So I'm very happy for God to have people working. 00:08:54.86\00:08:57.70 My name is Vien. 00:09:00.47\00:09:02.14 I've actually got five kids, 00:09:02.17\00:09:04.54 but there's only two with me at the moment. 00:09:04.57\00:09:07.68 For the past few weeks, 00:09:07.71\00:09:10.08 we've been living here on the streets, 00:09:10.11\00:09:13.52 staying in the containers with our street friends there. 00:09:13.55\00:09:17.19 We were told by our friends that there's a group of people 00:09:17.22\00:09:20.19 that always come and give out food for free, 00:09:20.22\00:09:23.96 like for breakfast. 00:09:23.99\00:09:25.33 So when we were sitting on the bench 00:09:25.36\00:09:27.90 and then one of them brought some tea stuff, 00:09:27.93\00:09:33.20 and they were like really nice and the lady was asking me 00:09:33.23\00:09:37.24 if everything's okay, 00:09:37.27\00:09:38.61 and then I couldn't hold my tears 00:09:38.64\00:09:40.41 and I started crying, you know, like, 00:09:40.44\00:09:42.24 they invited me to stay back for church 00:09:42.28\00:09:44.98 and we read 00:09:45.01\00:09:49.58 a few Bible verses there 00:09:49.62\00:09:51.55 and did some sharing. 00:09:51.59\00:09:53.82 I haven't been going to church all these years 00:09:53.86\00:09:57.36 and the guy told me to read the Bible. 00:09:57.39\00:09:59.96 And then after reading that, like I just feel 00:10:00.00\00:10:03.20 like there's a big load off me. 00:10:03.23\00:10:05.47 I'm a fisherman. 00:10:11.61\00:10:12.94 You know, I always roamed around the street before too, 00:10:19.98\00:10:23.75 and I see how difficult the life in the street, 00:10:23.79\00:10:27.42 and I know how they hunger every day. 00:10:27.46\00:10:31.96 It's like and mostly that devil tempted them 00:10:31.99\00:10:35.53 to do bad things. 00:10:35.56\00:10:36.90 And that's why when I come to this church, 00:10:36.93\00:10:40.34 and I know I must take care for these people. 00:10:40.37\00:10:44.07 I want to turn their lives, 00:10:44.11\00:10:45.94 they're gonna find rest in Jesus alone. 00:10:45.97\00:10:49.04 People come and they call us pastors. 00:10:49.08\00:10:53.52 To them I say, "No, I'm not ordained pastor. 00:10:53.55\00:10:56.42 I'm just an ordinary church member 00:10:56.45\00:10:58.62 and we want to come 00:10:58.65\00:11:00.12 and share the love of Christ to you people." 00:11:00.16\00:11:02.99 We pray for not only in the cities of Fiji, 00:11:03.02\00:11:05.99 the cities all over the world. 00:11:06.03\00:11:07.60 But if we don't pray for them 00:11:07.63\00:11:10.23 and we do the mission to the city, 00:11:10.27\00:11:13.23 I think these people will be lost. 00:11:13.27\00:11:15.17 The church at the park, 00:11:21.11\00:11:23.45 it was established about three years ago. 00:11:23.48\00:11:26.25 Every week, the church gives out food 00:11:26.28\00:11:30.29 and reaches out in Bible studies 00:11:30.32\00:11:32.79 and outreach programs, health, singing ministries, 00:11:32.82\00:11:37.69 and the giving out of tracks and discs. 00:11:37.73\00:11:40.26 They were transformed because of the love shown 00:11:40.30\00:11:43.33 by the church members 00:11:43.37\00:11:45.03 who usually visit them in their homes 00:11:45.07\00:11:47.17 and those live here, give them food 00:11:47.20\00:11:49.97 and meet their needs, 00:11:50.01\00:11:51.91 just like Jesus did 2,000 years ago. 00:11:51.94\00:11:55.71 This park is very special. 00:11:55.74\00:11:57.18 It is situated at the very center 00:11:57.21\00:11:58.91 of the main city. 00:11:58.95\00:12:00.28 This have all sorts of people, all walks of life, 00:12:00.32\00:12:02.85 many problems come and meet here. 00:12:02.88\00:12:05.05 Most people have gone from this place 00:12:05.09\00:12:07.52 refreshed knowing that there is a God 00:12:07.56\00:12:11.36 who loves them, 00:12:11.39\00:12:12.73 and who is ready to take care of their everyday needs. 00:12:12.76\00:12:17.83 Well, thanks so much for joining us today hope that you've been inspired, 00:12:37.15\00:12:39.19 but also challenged by what you've seen and heard. 00:12:39.22\00:12:42.12 Because as we look around the world today, 00:12:42.16\00:12:43.86 we see that there are many people 00:12:43.89\00:12:45.53 who have never even heard the name of Jesus Christ. 00:12:45.56\00:12:48.66 But Jesus talked about a light set on a hill 00:12:48.70\00:12:51.57 and He Himself is the light and He has asked us 00:12:51.60\00:12:54.30 to share His light throughout the world 00:12:54.34\00:12:56.74 to the ends of the earth. 00:12:56.77\00:12:58.11 I want to
