00:00:17.78\00:00:22.28
Next up, Karen Glassford
from Institute of World Mission,
00:00:22.32\00:00:25.95
shares what it
means to be a missionary.
00:00:25.99\00:00:28.72
I got a question for you.
00:00:28.76\00:00:30.19
Do you know
what a missionary is?
00:00:30.23\00:00:32.66
A missionary is someone that
tells other people about Jesus
00:00:32.69\00:00:35.76
anywhere in the world.
00:00:35.80\00:00:37.50
Real often, missionaries
go to other countries
00:00:37.53\00:00:41.37
to tell people about Jesus
00:00:41.40\00:00:42.84
who maybe haven't
heard about Jesus before.
00:00:42.87\00:00:45.31
Well, my family
were missionaries
00:00:45.34\00:00:47.51
when I was a little kid
00:00:47.54\00:00:48.88
and I grew up in
different countries.
00:00:48.91\00:00:50.71
And my dad was a
pastor and a Bible teacher,
00:00:50.75\00:00:53.98
and sometimes he would
do evangelistic meetings,
00:00:54.02\00:00:57.59
and people would come
00:00:57.62\00:00:58.95
and they would hear about Jesus.
00:00:58.99\00:01:00.59
Well, one of his
students was going to hold
00:01:00.62\00:01:03.53
an evangelistic
meetings in the city
00:01:03.56\00:01:05.59
close to where we lived,
00:01:05.63\00:01:07.13
where in that section,
there was no Adventist.
00:01:07.16\00:01:10.47
And my mom said, "Karen,
00:01:10.50\00:01:12.47
would you like
to be a missionary?"
00:01:12.50\00:01:14.14
I said, "Oh, yes.
00:01:14.17\00:01:15.50
I've always wanted
to be a missionary."
00:01:15.54\00:01:17.14
She says, "Well,
00:01:17.17\00:01:18.51
you've always been a missionary,
00:01:18.54\00:01:20.18
but would you like
to do something to help
00:01:20.21\00:01:22.51
with some
evangelistic meetings?"
00:01:22.54\00:01:24.55
I said, "What can I
do? I'm just a little kid.
00:01:24.58\00:01:27.62
I'm, what five years old?
00:01:27.65\00:01:29.95
What can a five year old
do for evangelistic meetings,
00:01:29.98\00:01:32.69
except just smile at the
people when they come in?"
00:01:32.72\00:01:35.42
My mom said, "Well,
00:01:35.46\00:01:36.89
they want you
to play your violin
00:01:36.93\00:01:38.83
and your brother play the piano.
00:01:38.86\00:01:40.20
And sometimes
you'll play together
00:01:40.23\00:01:41.96
for like a half an hour
00:01:42.00\00:01:43.33
before the meeting
starts so that people will come
00:01:43.37\00:01:45.87
out of curiosity
to hear you guys play
00:01:45.90\00:01:48.87
because in this country,
it's not real common that
00:01:48.90\00:01:51.91
little kids play
musical instruments."
00:01:51.94\00:01:54.34
I said, "But, Mommy,
00:01:54.38\00:01:55.88
nobody's gonna give
their heart to Jesus
00:01:55.91\00:01:57.91
just because I
played my violin."
00:01:57.95\00:02:00.52
And my mom said,
00:02:00.55\00:02:01.88
"I wouldn't be
so sure about that.
00:02:01.92\00:02:04.02
Someday when you get to heaven,
you're gonna have to ask Jesus,
00:02:04.05\00:02:08.12
if anybody came just
because you played violin
00:02:08.16\00:02:11.69
and then gave
their hearts to Jesus."
00:02:11.73\00:02:13.53
And I said, "Hmm.
00:02:13.56\00:02:15.96
Well, I'd like to know
before I got to heaven."
00:02:16.00\00:02:18.53
And my mom said, "Well,
maybe Jesus will show you
00:02:18.57\00:02:21.27
before you get to heaven."
00:02:21.30\00:02:22.64
So that day, mommy brought
out a dress for me to wear.
00:02:22.67\00:02:25.94
Now, I didn't like this dress.
00:02:25.97\00:02:28.11
It was an itchy green dress.
00:02:28.14\00:02:29.71
Now the green dress
was okay, but it was itchy.
00:02:29.74\00:02:32.31
I said, "Mommy, I
don't wanna wear that dress.
00:02:32.35\00:02:34.22
It makes me want
to scratch all over."
00:02:34.25\00:02:36.65
And mom said, "No,
but it's your best dress.
00:02:36.69\00:02:39.39
And you wanna do your best.
00:02:39.42\00:02:40.76
So you're gonna
wear that dress?"
00:02:40.79\00:02:42.26
Well, we went to the high school
00:02:42.29\00:02:43.76
in the auditorium.
00:02:43.79\00:02:45.13
I played my
violin up on the stage.
00:02:45.16\00:02:47.16
My brother played the piano.
00:02:47.20\00:02:48.96
And lots of people
came and they listened.
00:02:49.00\00:02:51.87
And then the preacher
got up and he preached.
00:02:51.90\00:02:55.17
And we did that
several nights in a row.
00:02:55.20\00:02:58.11
Years went by.
00:02:58.14\00:03:00.28
Finally, one day as an adult,
00:03:00.31\00:03:02.48
I was asked if I
would like to take
00:03:02.51\00:03:04.15
some teenagers and go
to that country again,
00:03:04.18\00:03:07.28
and do some
evangelism with the teenagers
00:03:07.32\00:03:09.58
where the
teenagers would be preaching.
00:03:09.62\00:03:11.35
And I would be helping to
mentor them and guide them
00:03:11.39\00:03:14.06
and teach them
how to do evangelism.
00:03:14.09\00:03:15.99
I said, "You know,
that would be a lot of fun.
00:03:16.02\00:03:18.09
I'd like to see
where I used to live."
00:03:18.13\00:03:20.33
And so we came and we came
00:03:20.36\00:03:21.93
right on the
campus of the university
00:03:21.96\00:03:23.53
where my dad used to teach.
00:03:23.57\00:03:25.23
And that night
when we got in the car,
00:03:25.27\00:03:27.27
we went to the meetings.
00:03:27.30\00:03:28.64
It was in a nice church,
00:03:28.67\00:03:30.57
and I suddenly
remembered the name of the town.
00:03:30.61\00:03:33.38
I said, "I've been here before.
00:03:33.41\00:03:36.75
Why have I been here before?"
And then it dawned on me.
00:03:36.78\00:03:40.18
That was the town where
I used to play my violin
00:03:40.22\00:03:43.59
for that evangelistic
meetings and I thought,
00:03:43.62\00:03:45.55
"I wonder, if I
will ever find out
00:03:45.59\00:03:49.02
if playing the
violin made any difference?"
00:03:49.06\00:03:51.09
Well, finally we
got to the last Sabbath.
00:03:51.13\00:03:54.46
Lots of people
were getting baptized.
00:03:54.50\00:03:56.23
It was a beautiful experience,
00:03:56.26\00:03:58.20
and the head elder
had invited our group
00:03:58.23\00:04:00.64
over to his house for lunch.
00:04:00.67\00:04:02.54
So after the
baptisms and everything
00:04:02.57\00:04:04.44
we're eating at his house,
and I said to him, I said,
00:04:04.47\00:04:07.61
"Tell me, were you
raised an Adventist?"
00:04:07.64\00:04:10.51
And he said,
"Well, part of my life."
00:04:10.55\00:04:14.32
He said, "You see, when
I was about 12 years old."
00:04:14.35\00:04:17.62
He said, "My grandparents were
raising me and my brothers."
00:04:17.65\00:04:20.36
And he said, "We went to
some evangelistic meetings."
00:04:20.39\00:04:24.73
He said, "How old are you?"
00:04:24.76\00:04:26.56
And he told me,
and I started adding
00:04:26.59\00:04:28.26
how old I was,
and how old he was.
00:04:28.30\00:04:31.13
And I realized it could be
the same meeting and I said,
00:04:31.17\00:04:33.84
"Was this meeting in a
high school auditorium?"
00:04:33.87\00:04:36.54
He said, "Yes, it was."
00:04:36.57\00:04:38.01
He said, "There
was two little kids.
00:04:38.04\00:04:39.91
They were American, or
maybe they were German."
00:04:39.94\00:04:42.04
He said,
"Honestly, I don't know."
00:04:42.08\00:04:43.68
But he said, "They
came and they did music."
00:04:43.71\00:04:45.18
And I like to
sing and my brother
00:04:45.21\00:04:47.35
liked to play the
piano and the other brother
00:04:47.38\00:04:49.25
liked to play guitar.
00:04:49.28\00:04:50.62
And so grandpa had taken us
with grandma to the meetings
00:04:50.65\00:04:53.56
and we had sat on the front row.
00:04:53.59\00:04:55.19
So we could see the little
kids play their instruments.
00:04:55.22\00:04:59.29
He says after about a
half an hour of music.
00:04:59.33\00:05:01.96
He said, "They said it was
time to start the meetings."
00:05:02.00\00:05:05.23
And so he said,
the pastor came up.
00:05:05.27\00:05:07.24
He said, "My grandfather said,
00:05:07.27\00:05:08.70
'Well, this is our chance
to leave now, we saw the music.
00:05:08.74\00:05:11.67
We're not really interested
in what the pastor has to say.'"
00:05:11.71\00:05:14.81
But he stood up
and he looked around,
00:05:14.84\00:05:16.81
and the auditorium
was full of people.
00:05:16.85\00:05:19.41
And it made the
grandfather get embarrassed.
00:05:19.45\00:05:21.92
He said, "We can't leave now.
00:05:21.95\00:05:23.95
That would be embarrassing.
00:05:23.99\00:05:25.32
I'm sorry kids,
00:05:25.35\00:05:26.69
you're gonna have to
sit through a sermon."
00:05:26.72\00:05:28.06
So he says, "We sat
back down, and we listened."
00:05:28.09\00:05:30.59
And, you know, my
grandfather and grandmother
00:05:30.63\00:05:33.19
really liked what they heard.
00:05:33.23\00:05:35.23
And at the end
of those meetings,
00:05:35.26\00:05:36.93
we started going every night.
00:05:36.97\00:05:38.33
And at the end
of those meetings,
00:05:38.37\00:05:39.87
grandpa and
grandma were baptized.
00:05:39.90\00:05:42.07
And a few years later,
00:05:42.10\00:05:43.44
me and my brothers got baptized,
00:05:43.47\00:05:44.81
two of my brothers
and I also got baptized.
00:05:44.84\00:05:47.21
And I said, "Really?
00:05:47.24\00:05:49.41
And what did that little
girl look like who was playing."
00:05:49.44\00:05:52.01
And he said,
"Well, strange thing is
00:05:52.05\00:05:55.22
I remember she was
wearing a green dress
00:05:55.25\00:05:58.09
and she had curly hair."
00:05:58.12\00:06:00.56
And I said, "Wow."
00:06:00.59\00:06:03.59
And suddenly the
lights went on for him.
00:06:03.63\00:06:05.53
And he said, "No
way. Was that you?"
00:06:05.56\00:06:08.90
And I said, "Uh-huh. I think so.
00:06:08.93\00:06:13.30
And I named off the high school,
00:06:13.34\00:06:14.67
named off the town."
00:06:14.70\00:06:16.04
And he said, "It was
you." And I started to cry.
00:06:16.07\00:06:19.61
And he said,
"Why are you crying?"
00:06:19.64\00:06:21.44
And I said,
"Because I told my mommy,
00:06:21.48\00:06:23.88
nobody was going
to become an Adventist
00:06:23.91\00:06:25.91
and give their hearts to Jesus
00:06:25.95\00:06:27.28
just because a little girl,
00:06:27.32\00:06:28.65
a little boy went
and played their music."
00:06:28.68\00:06:30.92
And she said,
"Someday when we get to heaven,
00:06:30.95\00:06:33.22
we would find out
00:06:33.25\00:06:34.59
if somebody had
become a Christian
00:06:34.62\00:06:36.02
because they
came for the music."
00:06:36.06\00:06:37.93
I told her I wanted to
know before I got to heaven,
00:06:37.96\00:06:41.50
and now I'm meeting you.
00:06:41.53\00:06:43.63
So see, boys and girls,
00:06:43.67\00:06:45.00
you might think
you're too young,
00:06:45.03\00:06:46.50
and that what you
do doesn't matter.
00:06:46.53\00:06:48.37
And you might have to wait until
00:06:48.40\00:06:49.87
you're an adult to find
out, but God can use you.
00:06:49.90\00:06:54.04
No matter how old you are.
00:06:54.08\00:06:56.08
Never forget,
you aren't too young.
00:06:56.11\00:06:59.81
God needs you as a missionary.
00:06:59.85\00:07:02.45
Welcome back to Mission 360.

00:07:15.43\00:07:19.00
Next up, let's visit a
mobile clinic in Mexico.
00:07:19.03\00:07:23.20
In the city of
Villahermosa, Mexico,
00:07:28.41\00:07:31.01
a bus serving as a
mobile clinic winds its way
00:07:31.05\00:07:33.72
through the neighborhoods,
00:07:33.75\00:07:35.08
giving free
medical care, medications,
00:07:35.12\00:07:37.35
and health advice to the people.
00:07:37.39\00:07:39.49
The mobile clinic
is a mission initiative
00:07:39.52\00:07:41.52
of the Southeast
Adventist Hospital,
00:07:41.56\00:07:43.73
which has served the
people of Mexico for decades.
00:07:43.76\00:07:46.56
This unique
ministry not only offers
00:07:46.59\00:07:48.63
physical
restoration to patients,
00:07:48.66\00:07:50.67
but also shares
spiritual restoration
00:07:50.70\00:07:53.07
in the hope of Jesus.
00:07:53.10\00:07:57.67
This is a mobile clinic,
00:07:57.71\00:07:59.54
which allows the
hospital to help the community.
00:07:59.57\00:08:02.14
We provide gynecology,
pediatrics, general medicine,
00:08:02.18\00:08:06.31
traumatology, and
especially dentistry.
00:08:06.35\00:08:10.25
We serve the
community because we believe
00:08:10.29\00:08:12.85
it's part of our
mission and it's what Jesus did.
00:08:12.89\00:08:17.96
Today, the bus comes
to a suburban neighborhood
00:08:17.99\00:08:20.30
in Villahermosa.
00:08:20.33\00:08:21.66
The people in this
area have very little access
00:08:21.70\00:08:24.20
to basic health care.
00:08:24.23\00:08:25.87
The nearest hospital is too far,
00:08:25.90\00:08:27.84
and most of the
people are unable to pay
00:08:27.87\00:08:29.90
for an appointment
or a clinical exam.
00:08:29.94\00:08:32.67
Many are also not
familiar with healthy habits
00:08:32.71\00:08:35.34
and lack nutritious diets.
00:08:35.38\00:08:37.15
So the Adventist doctors
come by on the mobile clinic
00:08:37.18\00:08:40.12
and do what they
can to give the best
00:08:40.15\00:08:41.98
possible treatment to everyone.
00:08:42.02\00:08:44.29
Around the world,
medical missionaries are using
00:08:44.32\00:08:47.02
Christ's method of
ministry to mingle with people
00:08:47.06\00:08:49.96
and minister to their needs.
00:08:49.99\00:08:51.86
This allows them to gain
the confidence of the people,
00:08:51.89\00:08:54.86
many of whom have a desire
to learn more about the gospel.
00:08:54.90\00:08:58.30
The difference that
medical missionaries
00:08:58.33\00:09:00.04
make in their
lives is remarkable.
00:09:00.07\00:09:03.37
Please pray for people
in Mexico to find healing
00:09:03.41\00:09:06.41
and hope in Jesus,
00:09:06.44\00:09:08.21
and thank you for
your support of mission.
00:09:08.24\00:09:11.61
Well, that's about
it for today's program.
00:09:21.39\00:09:22.86
And I'm so glad that
00:09:22.89\00:09:24.23
you were able to join
me here on Mission 360.
00:09:24.26\00:09:26.80
And I hope that you enjoyed
our 360 degree view of mission
00:09:26.83\00:09:30.33
around the world.
00:09:30.37\00:09:31.70
And I wanna thank you so much
00:09:31.73\00:09:33.34
for being part of
our Global Mission team.
00:09:33.37\00:09:36.57
Every time that you
pray for church planting
00:09:36.60\00:09:38.91
for centers of influence
for new work around the world,
00:09:38.94\00:09:42.81
you are part of our team
every time you support us
00:09:42.84\00:09:45.51
with your
finances, and every time that
00:09:45.55\00:09:47.52
you are personally involved.
00:09:47.55\00:09:49.02
And it does make a difference.
And I wanna thank you so much.
00:09:49.05\00:09:52.35
As we leave, I invite you
to listen to this music video
00:09:52.39\00:09:56.42
and as we listen,
let's take the time to pause,
00:09:56.46\00:09:59.83
to reflect, to
meditate, to pray about mission,
00:09:59.86\00:10:03.16
how we
personally can be involved
00:10:03.20\00:10:05.23
and also to pray for those
on the front line of mission.
00:10:05.27\00:10:08.10

Mission, I'm Gary Krause.
