Butterfly Church in Taiwan, 00:00:08.74\00:00:10.91 a mobile clinic in Mexico, and the question 00:00:10.94\00:00:13.71 what is a missionary coming up next. 00:00:13.74\00:00:16.04 Hello, and welcome to Mission 360. 00:00:49.04\00:00:50.91 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:50.95\00:00:52.28 Today's program is coming to you from Tokyo, Japan. 00:00:52.31\00:00:55.78 And I'm standing in the Meiji Jingu Shrine 00:00:55.82\00:00:59.05 right in the heart of Tokyo. 00:00:59.09\00:01:01.12 And this is a shrine that commemorates the Emperor 00:01:01.16\00:01:04.36 and the Empress, who died in the early 1900s. 00:01:04.39\00:01:08.40 And this was established in 1920. 00:01:08.43\00:01:10.60 And people from all over the world 00:01:10.63\00:01:12.33 donated some 100,000 trees 00:01:12.37\00:01:16.04 to build the beautiful forest that surrounds here. 00:01:16.07\00:01:19.34 Shintoism, of course, is a fascinating religion 00:01:19.37\00:01:22.34 that's at the heart of Japanese culture and values. 00:01:22.38\00:01:25.98 And on today's program, we'll be looking 00:01:26.01\00:01:28.05 more at Japan mission around the world, 00:01:28.08\00:01:30.29 but first up, let's visit the Butterfly Church in Taiwan. 00:01:30.32\00:01:35.09 Every year, thousands of butterflies 00:01:35.12\00:01:37.33 come to the Maolin Valley in Taiwan. 00:01:37.36\00:01:40.10 They fly here just before the winter in search of warmth 00:01:40.13\00:01:43.20 to survive the colder months. 00:01:43.23\00:01:45.23 In this valley, there are more butterflies than people. 00:01:45.27\00:01:48.87 In fact, the local native community is small. 00:01:48.90\00:01:52.01 There are only 600 people who live here. 00:01:52.04\00:01:54.58 Ubake lives in the Maolin Valley. 00:01:54.61\00:01:57.18 As an artist, he is inspired by God's designs in nature. 00:01:57.21\00:02:00.92 Tourists admire his unique art, including his favorite pieces, 00:02:00.95\00:02:04.85 which are patterned after the butterflies. 00:02:04.89\00:02:06.99 Ubake has used these amazing creations 00:02:07.02\00:02:09.52 to cover the Maolin Seventh-day Adventist Church building, 00:02:09.56\00:02:12.49 both on the outside and the inside. 00:02:12.53\00:02:15.10 He has also dedicated 00:02:15.13\00:02:16.46 some of his other intricate pieces 00:02:16.50\00:02:18.17 to beautify the church. 00:02:18.20\00:02:19.53 Ubake's charming and colorful metal butterflies 00:02:25.67\00:02:28.98 help to make this church stand out 00:02:29.01\00:02:30.88 among many other Christian denominations 00:02:30.91\00:02:32.88 in this community. 00:02:32.91\00:02:34.25 However, it's not the metal, wooden, 00:02:34.28\00:02:36.05 or cloth ornaments that make this church 00:02:36.08\00:02:38.22 known in the community. 00:02:38.25\00:02:39.59 Every day, a group of local Adventists 00:02:43.26\00:02:45.36 start the day with prayer. 00:02:45.39\00:02:46.96 In the early morning, they ask God to bless 00:02:47.00\00:02:49.33 their efforts to reach the people around them. 00:02:49.36\00:02:51.93 Then they read from God's Word and stretch their muscles 00:02:51.97\00:02:55.20 to begin an important ministry. 00:02:55.24\00:02:57.44 Today, they will complete their 339th lap around 00:02:57.47\00:03:02.04 and through the community. 00:03:02.08\00:03:03.88 This is the Maolin Church's walking and praying ministry. 00:03:03.91\00:03:08.65 Like butterflies that fly from flower to flower, 00:03:08.68\00:03:11.62 these Seventh-day Adventists walk from house to house. 00:03:11.65\00:03:14.96 As church members pour into the streets, 00:03:14.99\00:03:17.29 they smile and warmly greet their neighbors. 00:03:17.33\00:03:20.30 When someone invites them into their home, 00:03:20.33\00:03:22.30 they pause to pray for the many 00:03:22.33\00:03:24.20 who are in need there. 00:03:24.23\00:03:25.73 And when they leave the home, 00:03:25.77\00:03:27.14 the people feel blessed by the visit. 00:03:27.17\00:03:29.80 During the trek, church members also stop at their own homes 00:03:29.84\00:03:33.24 for a special prayer. 00:03:33.27\00:03:34.84 Each member of the walking and praying ministry 00:03:34.88\00:03:37.48 also hosts a small group Bible study 00:03:37.51\00:03:40.12 on a rotating basis. 00:03:40.15\00:03:42.18 In these small groups, 00:03:42.22\00:03:43.55 they pray daily for their neighbors 00:03:43.59\00:03:45.39 who are learning about the Bible. 00:03:45.42\00:03:47.86 These "walking butterflies" pollinate their community 00:03:47.89\00:03:50.86 with God's love. 00:03:50.89\00:03:52.26 Because of this ministry, 00:03:52.29\00:03:53.66 the Maolin Adventist Church membership 00:03:53.70\00:03:55.60 has doubled over the last three years. 00:03:55.63\00:03:58.00 Members have also grown closer to each other and to Jesus. 00:03:58.03\00:04:02.27 Please pray for the Butterfly Church 00:04:02.30\00:04:04.44 and for the Christ-like ministry 00:04:04.47\00:04:06.24 they do here. 00:04:06.27\00:04:09.18 My guest is Yoriko who is a youth leader 00:04:09.21\00:04:11.65 in her local church here in Tokyo, Japan. 00:04:11.68\00:04:14.48 Yoriko, thank you so much for joining us. 00:04:14.52\00:04:16.38 Thank you very much. 00:04:16.42\00:04:17.75 How did you first become a Seventh-day Adventist? 00:04:17.79\00:04:20.86 I actually grew up in Christian house. 00:04:20.89\00:04:22.96 Yes. 00:04:22.99\00:04:24.33 But actually, I didn't wanted to become a Christian. 00:04:24.36\00:04:28.36 By the time I was 14 00:04:28.40\00:04:30.57 because of many different reasons, 00:04:30.60\00:04:32.73 but then I went to high school 00:04:32.77\00:04:35.40 in Oklahoma called Oklahoma Academy, 00:04:35.44\00:04:38.47 and they are really focused on training a young people 00:04:38.51\00:04:42.88 to become evangelist or missionary. 00:04:42.91\00:04:47.25 So all the programs that they have like 00:04:47.28\00:04:49.88 Messiah's Mansion canvassing programs and also, 00:04:49.92\00:04:54.06 they taught us about the Bible really well. 00:04:54.09\00:04:57.49 And that's was the first time when I decided to accept Jesus. 00:04:57.53\00:05:02.86 Wonderful. 00:05:02.90\00:05:04.50 So through the Adventist Academy. 00:05:04.53\00:05:06.74 Terrific. 00:05:06.77\00:05:08.10 So in your church, 00:05:08.14\00:05:09.90 you have something called a Youth Rush Program. 00:05:09.94\00:05:12.34 Can you tell me what that is? 00:05:12.37\00:05:13.71 Oh, Youth Rush Program is actually, 00:05:13.74\00:05:16.91 it's a canvassing program. 00:05:16.95\00:05:18.41 Yes. 00:05:18.45\00:05:19.78 Starting in America, but actually they started to, 00:05:19.81\00:05:24.09 they decided to start it in Japan. 00:05:24.12\00:05:27.16 So young people, like around 14 to 20 people 00:05:27.19\00:05:32.86 come together and knock on the doors, 00:05:32.89\00:05:35.36 we train them how to knock on the doors, 00:05:35.40\00:05:37.93 and we also do like Bible study together. 00:05:37.97\00:05:41.54 And we introduce the books to the people. 00:05:41.57\00:05:46.07 And it's been amazing experience. 00:05:46.11\00:05:48.98 So I guess it is amazing. 00:05:49.01\00:05:50.61 I mean, a lot of the places would be very difficult 00:05:50.65\00:05:52.75 to even get into some of the apartments, right? 00:05:52.78\00:05:55.45 So what sort of response do you get? 00:05:55.48\00:05:58.42 Well, we get a lot of response. 00:05:58.45\00:06:00.76 Most of the time, especially in the city, 00:06:00.79\00:06:02.86 many, most of the responses are quick rejection. 00:06:02.89\00:06:05.89 Yes. 00:06:05.93\00:06:07.26 But we do meet many people who actually seeking God. 00:06:07.30\00:06:10.83 And we pray with them. 00:06:10.87\00:06:13.03 And they actually, you know, cry at the door to say, 00:06:13.07\00:06:17.14 God has been showing many miracles. 00:06:17.17\00:06:19.57 Wonderful. 00:06:19.61\00:06:21.24 Now, how many young people are involved in this program? 00:06:21.28\00:06:27.45 Ah, you mean the leaders or... 00:06:27.48\00:06:29.95 Actually, who knocking on doors? 00:06:29.98\00:06:33.19 For one program? 00:06:33.22\00:06:35.86 So how many are going door-to-door knocking? 00:06:35.89\00:06:39.09 Oh, for one program, 00:06:39.13\00:06:41.63 we have a limit of 14 people actually. 00:06:41.66\00:06:46.63 So the 14 students come to one programs 00:06:46.67\00:06:50.21 and we have three of those programs 00:06:50.24\00:06:54.04 for the summer and for the springs. 00:06:54.08\00:06:56.68 So do you have trouble getting enough young people to go? 00:06:56.71\00:07:01.98 No, actually depends. 00:07:02.02\00:07:07.69 Sometimes. Yeah, sometimes, but we... 00:07:07.72\00:07:10.76 But now we like 00:07:10.79\00:07:13.06 at the beginning of the programs. 00:07:13.09\00:07:15.30 It started two years ago. 00:07:15.33\00:07:17.07 And it started with like, 00:07:17.10\00:07:19.30 actually seven or eight people for the first program. 00:07:19.33\00:07:21.37 It's built up. 00:07:21.40\00:07:22.74 Yeah, but more and more people started wanting to come. 00:07:22.77\00:07:26.11 So now we are running like three programs. 00:07:26.14\00:07:29.74 Wonderful. Yeah, so. 00:07:29.78\00:07:31.45 Terrific. 00:07:31.48\00:07:32.81 Now you have another program called Gideon 300. 00:07:32.85\00:07:35.08 What is that? 00:07:35.12\00:07:36.45 Gideon 300 is a project to train 00:07:36.48\00:07:39.75 and train the young leader, 00:07:39.79\00:07:42.76 300 youth leader until the year 2020. 00:07:42.79\00:07:47.76 Oh, wonderful. So how is that program going? 00:07:47.80\00:07:50.53 It's going very well. 00:07:50.57\00:07:52.13 They actually started a program called Gifts. 00:07:52.17\00:07:54.74 Yes. 00:07:54.77\00:07:56.10 So the young people can learn about 00:07:56.14\00:07:58.01 the Bible like 28 fundamental 00:07:58.04\00:08:00.41 Seventh-day Adventists on the internet. 00:08:00.44\00:08:03.68 And Youth Rush is one of those programs. 00:08:03.71\00:08:06.95 Wonderful. 00:08:06.98\00:08:09.52 Here we're walking through a neighborhood here, 00:08:09.55\00:08:11.59 which it's very quiet. 00:08:11.62\00:08:13.32 It's very nice. 00:08:13.36\00:08:14.69 You see families, but mission to these people, 00:08:14.72\00:08:19.36 what sort of barriers are there? 00:08:19.39\00:08:20.93 Why is mission such a challenge here in Tokyo? 00:08:20.96\00:08:25.27 I think one of the reasons 00:08:25.30\00:08:26.63 is because people are actually filled. 00:08:26.67\00:08:32.81 They have money, they have clothes. 00:08:32.84\00:08:35.78 Basically, they have a job. 00:08:35.81\00:08:37.71 They have food. 00:08:37.75\00:08:39.08 So as it says in the Revelation, 00:08:39.11\00:08:42.82 you know, I have, I'm rich, 00:08:42.85\00:08:44.85 I've enough of goods, but at the same time, 00:08:44.89\00:08:47.62 many people in Japan are really feeling lonely 00:08:47.66\00:08:50.53 and they're stressed with many problems of life. 00:08:50.56\00:08:53.93 So I think they are needing Jesus, 00:08:53.96\00:08:56.87 but they're not realizing about it. 00:08:56.90\00:08:59.43 Right. 00:08:59.47\00:09:00.80 So the opportunity is there to share. 00:09:00.84\00:09:02.60 Yeah. 00:09:02.64\00:09:03.97 Can you give me an example of somebody whose life 00:09:04.01\00:09:06.61 has been touched through this church? 00:09:06.64\00:09:08.64 Oh, through this church? Yeah. 00:09:08.68\00:09:10.01 Yeah, actually, we started to have an English Bible study. 00:09:10.05\00:09:13.21 Yes. 00:09:13.25\00:09:14.58 On Wednesday, and my friend actually started 00:09:14.62\00:09:18.12 to come to this church. 00:09:18.15\00:09:19.55 She was, she's... 00:09:19.59\00:09:21.66 I went to public college. Yes. 00:09:21.69\00:09:24.99 Junior college, and she grew up in Christian house, home, 00:09:25.03\00:09:29.70 but she was praying for 18 years. 00:09:29.73\00:09:34.64 Wow. Yeah. 00:09:34.67\00:09:36.00 So, but like, past few months, 00:09:36.04\00:09:39.37 like many things happen in her life. 00:09:39.41\00:09:42.08 And she started to pray. 00:09:42.11\00:09:44.31 And she actually contacted me. 00:09:44.35\00:09:46.82 And she started to come to church. 00:09:46.85\00:09:48.95 And now she's really enjoying it. 00:09:48.98\00:09:51.15 And she said her life was has been changed. 00:09:51.19\00:09:53.79 Terrific. 00:09:53.82\00:09:55.62 Now, what are your hopes for the future? 00:09:55.66\00:09:58.13 What would you like to see happen in the future? 00:09:58.16\00:10:00.13 Happen in the future? I really like to. 00:10:00.16\00:10:03.73 I really like to see more and more young people 00:10:03.77\00:10:07.67 get on fire for God and be missionaries for Japan. 00:10:07.70\00:10:12.57 And I want to see Jesus comes very soon. 00:10:12.61\00:10:15.58 Wonderful. 00:10:15.61\00:10:16.95 Well, thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:10:16.98\00:10:19.15 Thank you very much. Appreciate it. 00:10:19.18\00:10:20.95 And viewers at home, please pray for mission 00:10:20.98\00:10:25.25 here in Japan, Tokyo, huge city, 00:10:25.29\00:10:28.02 so many people, high rises everywhere. 00:10:28.06\00:10:31.06 And as we've been reminded, often they feel that 00:10:31.09\00:10:34.90 they're rich and increased with goods 00:10:34.93\00:10:36.56 and have need of nothing, but we know that 00:10:36.60\00:10:38.33 there's something 00:10:38.37\00:10:39.70 that only the love of Jesus can fill. 00:10:39.73\00:10:41.70 So please pray for Tokyo, 00:10:41.74\00:10:43.24 pray for Japan, pray for this church, 00:10:43.27\00:10:45.11 pray for the young people, and the leaders. 00:10:45.14\00:10:47.31 And we will be right back straight after this break. 00:10:47.34\00:10:50.75
