Property mafia tried to take away 00:00:16.31\00:00:18.01 the sight of a Global Mission pioneers' church plant, 00:00:18.05\00:00:21.22 Adventist cycle for health in Puerto Rico, 00:00:21.25\00:00:24.15 and a school for native peoples in Alberta, Canada 00:00:24.19\00:00:27.49 coming up next. 00:00:27.52\00:00:28.86 Hello and welcome to Mission 360 00:01:07.63\00:01:09.50 coming to you today from Cambodia, 00:01:09.53\00:01:12.17 in fact the capital city, Phnom Penh. 00:01:12.20\00:01:14.50 Now when tourists come to a place like Cambodia, 00:01:14.54\00:01:17.97 they prepare themselves for many types of bugs because, 00:01:18.01\00:01:21.24 of course, we're in the tropics. 00:01:21.28\00:01:22.98 And sometimes we see these things to avoid, 00:01:23.01\00:01:25.68 but in different cultures, 00:01:25.71\00:01:27.38 they're actually part of the food 00:01:27.42\00:01:30.29 that they eat. 00:01:30.32\00:01:31.65 So right here, you will see some deep fried frogs, 00:01:31.69\00:01:36.79 tiny frogs, 00:01:36.83\00:01:38.79 but put on a stick and I'm imagining 00:01:38.83\00:01:41.93 I can't give you a first person testimony, 00:01:41.96\00:01:44.90 but they'd be quite crunchy. 00:01:44.93\00:01:46.57 And, of course, 00:01:46.60\00:01:47.94 here we have a variety of insects. 00:01:47.97\00:01:50.57 These are actually crickets 00:01:50.61\00:01:51.94 that have been deep fried as well. 00:01:51.97\00:01:53.61 And the chilies have been mixed up in it as well 00:01:53.64\00:01:56.24 to make it quite a memorable experience I'm sure. 00:01:56.28\00:02:00.05 As we visit different cultures, we see that people do things 00:02:00.08\00:02:02.82 in different ways. 00:02:02.85\00:02:04.19 And in our mission, 00:02:04.22\00:02:05.55 we need to be understanding cross-culturally 00:02:05.59\00:02:07.92 that we just don't export the way 00:02:07.96\00:02:10.43 that we do things just because 00:02:10.46\00:02:11.93 we think it's the best way to do it. 00:02:11.96\00:02:13.80 We need to take the principles of God's Word 00:02:13.83\00:02:16.60 that cross all cultures the love of Jesus, 00:02:16.63\00:02:19.37 and on today's program, we'll be talking about mission, 00:02:19.40\00:02:23.51 cross-cultural mission, 00:02:23.54\00:02:24.87 and first up, let's travel to India 00:02:24.91\00:02:27.08 and visit a Global Mission pioneer. 00:02:27.11\00:02:31.95 In New Delhi, India, an angry group 00:02:31.98\00:02:34.25 ordered the Seventh-day Adventist missionaries 00:02:34.28\00:02:36.58 to leave their neighborhood. 00:02:36.62\00:02:38.09 The missionaries wanted to establish 00:02:38.12\00:02:39.75 the first Adventist Church here, 00:02:39.79\00:02:41.79 but there was a dispute 00:02:41.82\00:02:43.16 over rights to the plot of land. 00:02:43.19\00:02:45.19 It wasn't that they disliked the Adventist. 00:02:45.23\00:02:47.76 Hoping to resolve the conflict, church leadership 00:02:47.80\00:02:50.77 sent a Global Mission pioneer named Suleman 00:02:50.80\00:02:53.87 to this un-entered area. 00:02:53.90\00:02:56.67 Pioneer Suleman was in for a challenge. 00:02:56.71\00:02:59.64 There are millions of people in New Delhi 00:02:59.67\00:03:01.74 who don't know Jesus yet, and in this crowded city, 00:03:01.78\00:03:04.78 every piece of land is valuable. 00:03:04.81\00:03:07.58 He knew the group claiming ownership rights 00:03:07.62\00:03:09.85 wouldn't give up the property without a fight, 00:03:09.88\00:03:12.79 but as a Global Mission pioneer Suleman not only hope 00:03:12.82\00:03:16.12 to resolve the conflict, he also planned to share 00:03:16.16\00:03:19.39 the love of Jesus and eventually 00:03:19.43\00:03:21.56 start a new group of believers. 00:03:21.60\00:03:24.53 When Suleman arrived, 00:03:24.57\00:03:26.10 he and his family received serious threats. 00:03:26.13\00:03:29.04 They told me your church won't save you. 00:03:32.41\00:03:37.41 You better leave the property or we will get even with you. 00:03:37.45\00:03:41.55 So the pioneer asked God for wisdom 00:03:44.95\00:03:47.19 on how best to deal with the escalating conflict. 00:03:47.22\00:03:50.33 Then he spoke with the angry men 00:03:50.36\00:03:52.09 who were threatening to beat him. 00:03:52.13\00:03:55.56 I am here to serve. 00:03:55.60\00:03:57.67 If you chase me, where will I go? 00:03:57.70\00:04:01.24 Your conflict is with my administration. 00:04:01.27\00:04:04.51 Let me stay here. 00:04:04.54\00:04:06.54 If the property is deeded to you, 00:04:06.57\00:04:09.34 at least someone is taking care of the property 00:04:09.38\00:04:12.65 while this matter gets resolved. 00:04:12.68\00:04:15.48 The men thought this was a reasonable proposition. 00:04:15.52\00:04:18.09 So they allowed pioneer Suleman to stay, 00:04:18.12\00:04:20.96 but he couldn't make any changes to the property. 00:04:20.99\00:04:23.66 Faced with no choice, the pioneer agreed. 00:04:23.69\00:04:27.86 Suleman and his wife got to know 00:04:27.90\00:04:29.80 the surrounding community. 00:04:29.83\00:04:31.40 They visited neighbors and developed friendships 00:04:31.43\00:04:34.00 that allowed them to share their faith. 00:04:34.04\00:04:36.50 By God's grace, people opened up to the gospel 00:04:42.24\00:04:45.58 and wanted to hear more about Jesus. 00:04:45.61\00:04:48.58 One day they met Sushma the wife of a man 00:04:48.62\00:04:51.42 who was raised Seventh-day Adventist. 00:04:51.45\00:04:53.52 Sushma and the pioneer's wife 00:04:53.56\00:04:55.32 became good friends cooking together 00:04:55.36\00:04:57.69 and sharing life experiences. 00:04:57.73\00:05:00.10 Sushma increasingly admired the Adventist. 00:05:00.13\00:05:03.16 She saw that they were humble people 00:05:03.20\00:05:05.03 who lived a simple life. 00:05:05.07\00:05:07.34 The pioneer's wife ask Sushma, 00:05:07.37\00:05:09.34 she would be interested to learn more about the Bible 00:05:09.37\00:05:12.11 and she agreed. 00:05:12.14\00:05:13.58 So Suleman and his wife 00:05:13.61\00:05:14.98 began to teach Sushma about God. 00:05:15.01\00:05:17.11 My husband was an Adventist, 00:05:21.15\00:05:23.35 but I didn't know much about this church. 00:05:23.39\00:05:26.42 I didn't even know anything before marrying 00:05:26.45\00:05:28.89 into an Adventist family, 00:05:28.92\00:05:31.36 but after the pioneer arrived, I came to know more about Jesus 00:05:31.39\00:05:36.13 and the Adventist Church. 00:05:36.16\00:05:38.57 Please pray for my husband. 00:05:38.60\00:05:40.64 He doesn't want to come to church, 00:05:40.67\00:05:42.77 even though he was an Adventist from childhood. 00:05:42.80\00:05:46.64 Today because Suleman mingled with the people showing 00:05:46.68\00:05:50.11 Christ's love, this property is formally deeded 00:05:50.15\00:05:53.52 to the Seventh-day Adventist Church in India. 00:05:53.55\00:05:56.32 There are approximately 25 regular members 00:05:56.35\00:05:59.52 who worship here every Sabbath. 00:05:59.55\00:06:01.59 As this congregation grows, 00:06:01.62\00:06:03.79 he continues to pray for wisdom. 00:06:03.83\00:06:07.03 Please pray for Suleman despite the challenges he faces. 00:06:07.06\00:06:11.20 Pray too for frontline mission work 00:06:11.23\00:06:13.97 in un-entered areas among major world religions 00:06:14.00\00:06:17.64 and in urban areas. 00:06:17.67\00:06:19.64 Thank you for your support of global mission. 00:06:19.67\00:06:24.45 My guest is Pastor Pen, 00:06:24.48\00:06:26.38 who is the district supervisor for the churches 00:06:26.41\00:06:29.28 in the southern part of Phnom Penh 00:06:29.32\00:06:32.22 here in Cambodia. 00:06:32.25\00:06:33.59 Pastor, thanks so much for joining us. 00:06:33.62\00:06:35.89 Now you are in 00:06:35.92\00:06:37.26 the Southern District of Phnom Penh. 00:06:37.29\00:06:39.19 Can you describe what the city is like? 00:06:39.23\00:06:42.23 Okay. 00:06:42.26\00:06:44.37 I just moved from Kampong Thom District 00:06:44.40\00:06:46.84 to the Phnom Penh. 00:06:46.87\00:06:48.67 The situation in Phnom Penh is very good, 00:06:53.61\00:06:56.28 but very hard for us to win the people, 00:06:56.31\00:06:59.85 mostly the rich before because we have no time 00:06:59.88\00:07:02.98 to go in visit them 00:07:03.02\00:07:05.82 because the door is closed every day. 00:07:05.85\00:07:08.56 So we weren't happy, we saying God 00:07:08.59\00:07:11.66 because sometimes we can find a way 00:07:11.69\00:07:14.46 we can meet them in the market, 00:07:14.50\00:07:17.63 meet them in the shop, supermarket, and ask them, 00:07:17.67\00:07:22.34 say hello and we ask them how is their belief 00:07:22.37\00:07:26.57 and how they are like that and make them friends. 00:07:26.61\00:07:30.95 And then we can ask, ask them to join us in church. 00:07:30.98\00:07:35.45 Yes. 00:07:35.48\00:07:36.82 So the first step is for you to make the contact 00:07:36.85\00:07:39.59 and the friendships with people. 00:07:39.62\00:07:40.96 Yeah. 00:07:40.99\00:07:42.32 Now, Pastor, when did you, 00:07:42.36\00:07:43.86 how did you become a Seventh-day Adventist? 00:07:43.89\00:07:48.86 In 1984, I flee from 00:07:48.90\00:07:52.23 the Cambodia to the Thai border. 00:07:52.27\00:07:53.60 Yes. 00:07:53.64\00:07:54.97 I lived at around 10 years, 00:07:55.00\00:07:58.37 but I become a Christian when I went there. 00:07:58.41\00:08:01.94 I have no friend, no relative there. 00:08:01.98\00:08:05.68 So I start to go to ask the pastor 00:08:05.71\00:08:08.92 in the Seventh-day Adventist to live in the church 00:08:08.95\00:08:14.42 because I alone and don't know everything. 00:08:14.46\00:08:17.99 So he give me to allow to live in the church. 00:08:18.03\00:08:23.77 At that time, I don't believe in God, 00:08:23.80\00:08:26.80 he still preached me about the Bible every day 00:08:26.84\00:08:30.67 until several months 00:08:30.71\00:08:33.07 and he baptized me in 1994. 00:08:33.11\00:08:38.05 Now was that the first time that you had heard about Jesus? 00:08:38.08\00:08:43.12 When I was born in Phnom Penh. 00:08:43.15\00:08:47.29 I was, heard from the tracks 00:08:47.32\00:08:51.73 that people shared me about Jesus, 00:08:51.76\00:08:54.56 but I wasn't interested when I was young. 00:08:54.60\00:08:57.23 Right. Exactly. 00:08:57.27\00:08:59.10 So when you became a Christian? 00:08:59.13\00:09:01.70 When you became an Adventist, how did that change your life? 00:09:01.74\00:09:07.81 The first time when I got baptized, 00:09:07.84\00:09:09.78 I still not believe in Jesus really. 00:09:09.81\00:09:11.78 Oh, really? Yeah. 00:09:11.81\00:09:13.15 But when the... 00:09:13.18\00:09:14.52 It happened when the soldiers fighting 00:09:14.55\00:09:19.15 each other at that time the people ran away from me. 00:09:19.19\00:09:23.32 I did not know the way how I ran it, 00:09:23.36\00:09:26.53 but when I had a one track and start to run, 00:09:26.56\00:09:30.93 but the people is gone. 00:09:30.97\00:09:33.90 So I start to pray to Jesus. 00:09:33.94\00:09:36.40 I ask Him, "If you are really God, 00:09:36.44\00:09:38.94 is have power, help me." 00:09:38.97\00:09:41.21 Because I did not know the way go 00:09:41.24\00:09:42.81 and I go to the Thai border. 00:09:42.84\00:09:46.68 So at the time when I went to the cross, 00:09:46.72\00:09:49.92 near the hospital, 00:09:49.95\00:09:52.62 I have heard the voice behind me. 00:09:52.65\00:09:55.76 He says, "Stop! Stop! 00:09:55.79\00:09:58.19 Don't go." 00:09:58.23\00:09:59.56 When I turn back I didn't see anything, only the voice. 00:09:59.59\00:10:03.97 I think my ear is not, that had the problem. 00:10:04.00\00:10:09.14 So I start to go, start go again, 00:10:09.17\00:10:11.77 but again, but maybe I have two or three steps 00:10:11.81\00:10:15.21 I heard the sound again. 00:10:15.24\00:10:17.91 After that I stopped. 00:10:17.95\00:10:19.98 I look around, but no people, 00:10:20.02\00:10:22.88 but I said maybe I scare from the ceiling say that 00:10:22.92\00:10:26.25 may be I assume that, but I start again. 00:10:26.29\00:10:29.96 When I step around two steps, I walked two step, 00:10:29.99\00:10:34.63 I heard the sound again. 00:10:34.66\00:10:36.93 I look around again, but I don't see anything. 00:10:36.97\00:10:41.40 And this time I said, third time I don't stop anymore 00:10:41.44\00:10:44.81 if any call in the same thing of a voice, 00:10:44.84\00:10:48.44 but when I start walk the ceiling 00:10:48.48\00:10:52.75 is fell on in from me 00:10:52.78\00:10:54.65 about 100 meter towards the ceiling. 00:10:54.68\00:10:58.42 I stopped turn back, I realized, 00:10:58.45\00:11:01.46 and then I say maybe God is protecting me. 00:11:01.49\00:11:04.99 God call me because He's not called me 00:11:05.03\00:11:08.33 I will die at that time. 00:11:08.36\00:11:10.53 So when I turned around, I did not know the way. 00:11:10.57\00:11:13.97 Suddenly, I have seen a one man coming. 00:11:14.00\00:11:17.57 He said, "Why you left?" 00:11:17.61\00:11:19.11 I said, "I just knew coming 00:11:19.14\00:11:21.91 in the border in the refugee camp, 00:11:21.94\00:11:24.81 but I didn't know the way go in." 00:11:24.85\00:11:27.55 So he said, "Okay, this way, you can go this way." 00:11:27.58\00:11:31.29 And then we have a one tunnel, small tunnel, 00:11:31.32\00:11:34.22 I cannot cross the trap there, put something out there. 00:11:34.26\00:11:39.13 So he pushed me and helped me. 00:11:39.16\00:11:41.26 After that two minutes 00:11:41.30\00:11:42.90 when I turned back, he disappeared. 00:11:42.93\00:11:46.13 So after that, I started to tell my pastor, 00:11:46.17\00:11:49.00 he said, "It's God call to have you. 00:11:49.04\00:11:52.37 If He did not call, you will die." 00:11:52.41\00:11:54.94 At that time I started to believe in God. 00:11:54.98\00:11:57.91 Wonderful. 00:11:57.95\00:11:59.28 So when you were baptized, 00:11:59.31\00:12:01.05 you hadn't made a proper commitment? 00:12:01.08\00:12:02.42 Yeah, yeah, it's true. 00:12:02.45\00:12:04.45 So now you're a pastor 00:12:04.49\00:12:05.95 and you have several groups in the city? 00:12:05.99\00:12:08.06 Yeah. 00:12:08.09\00:12:09.42 What is your hope for the future here? 00:12:09.46\00:12:12.49 Because my willing I hope I'd want to spread 00:12:12.53\00:12:16.73 the word to all the people, 00:12:16.77\00:12:18.90 even the lost people and non-Christian 00:12:18.93\00:12:23.07 even the monk people 00:12:23.10\00:12:25.07 is my willing I've to bring them 00:12:25.11\00:12:27.14 to Jesus Christ. 00:12:27.18\00:12:28.51 Wonderful. 00:12:28.54\00:12:29.88 Pastor Pen, I wanna thank you so much 00:12:29.91\00:12:31.25 for sharing with us today. 00:12:31.28\00:12:32.61 Yeah.
