A Rohingya refugee family seeks away home. 00:00:05.80\00:00:09.07 The Adventist Development and Relief Agency 00:00:09.10\00:00:11.94 distributes food in Bangladesh, 00:00:11.97\00:00:14.21 and mission work in Southern Asia, 00:00:14.24\00:00:15.84 all this and much more coming up next. 00:00:15.88\00:00:18.31 You have tuned into Mission 360. 00:00:52.85\00:00:54.68 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:54.72\00:00:56.05 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:56.08\00:00:57.42 from Babcock University in Nigeria. 00:00:57.45\00:01:00.59 Babcock University is a very influential university, 00:01:00.62\00:01:04.43 not only here in Nigeria, 00:01:04.46\00:01:06.03 but throughout Africa 00:01:06.06\00:01:07.40 and in other parts of the world. 00:01:07.43\00:01:09.10 It began back in 1959 00:01:09.13\00:01:11.77 as the Adventist College of West Africa. 00:01:11.80\00:01:14.94 Today, it boasts more than 10,000 students, 00:01:14.97\00:01:18.04 and we'll be learning a lot more 00:01:18.07\00:01:19.41 about Babcock in this program. 00:01:19.44\00:01:21.48 But first up, let's travel to Southeast Asia 00:01:21.51\00:01:24.28 and meet a Rohingya refugee family, 00:01:24.31\00:01:26.98 struggling to find a way home. 00:01:27.02\00:01:28.78 Yasmin clutches her infant daughter Hasina to her chest 00:01:34.82\00:01:39.03 as she makes her way home. 00:01:39.06\00:01:40.40 She arrives at a makeshift shelter 00:01:41.43\00:01:43.30 made of tarpaulin 00:01:43.33\00:01:44.83 where she and her family are staying as refugees. 00:01:44.87\00:01:47.44 Yasmin belongs to a minority tribe in Myanmar 00:01:49.17\00:01:52.47 called Rohingya, 00:01:52.51\00:01:54.04 which has been targeted for their Islamic beliefs. 00:01:54.08\00:01:56.34 Early one morning in September, 2017, 00:01:57.91\00:02:01.08 Yasmin woke to the loud roar of a helicopter 00:02:01.12\00:02:03.92 circling her village in Myanmar. 00:02:03.95\00:02:05.69 The next thing she heard was machine guns 00:02:07.46\00:02:10.06 strafing the buildings. 00:02:10.09\00:02:11.43 Together with her husband, 00:02:12.69\00:02:14.26 Yasmin grabbed her four children 00:02:14.30\00:02:16.30 all under the age of five and rushed toward the sea. 00:02:16.33\00:02:20.04 The screams and gunfire faded behind them as they ran. 00:02:21.40\00:02:25.24 And by the time they reached the coast, 00:02:25.27\00:02:27.38 the only sound that remained was the lapping of the waves. 00:02:27.41\00:02:31.61 Still, the family was afraid. 00:02:31.65\00:02:33.92 Hasina then just a newborn survived those eight days 00:02:35.08\00:02:39.02 on breast milk with a piece of cloth for shade. 00:02:39.05\00:02:41.69 Finally, Yasmin and her husband decided that capture 00:02:42.89\00:02:46.06 was better than starvation. 00:02:46.09\00:02:47.43 On the morning of the ninth day, 00:02:49.03\00:02:50.43 the family fled toward Bangladesh. 00:02:50.47\00:02:52.17 After an arduous journey, 00:02:53.30\00:02:55.00 they ended up in a refugee camp called Camp Leda 00:02:55.04\00:02:58.01 in Southeast Bangladesh. 00:02:58.04\00:02:59.44 The Adventist Development and Relief Agency 00:03:00.88\00:03:03.58 or ADRA is one of several humanitarian organizations 00:03:03.61\00:03:07.05 providing basic necessities at the camp. 00:03:07.08\00:03:09.12 Although life in the refugee camp 00:03:10.95\00:03:12.52 is relatively safe, it's not always easy. 00:03:12.55\00:03:16.42 Access to latrines is limited. 00:03:16.46\00:03:18.83 Private bathing is nearly impossible to find 00:03:18.86\00:03:22.00 and schools are non-existent. 00:03:22.03\00:03:24.27 As a Rohingya refugee in Bangladesh Yasmin's options 00:03:25.53\00:03:28.84 for food are also limited. 00:03:28.87\00:03:31.14 So twice a month, she gathers her youngest child 00:03:31.17\00:03:34.28 and sets out for her allotted portion of rice, 00:03:34.31\00:03:36.98 lentils, salt, sugar, and oil. 00:03:37.01\00:03:40.55 Yasmin's husband was a successful shopkeeper 00:03:45.35\00:03:48.02 and homeowner in Myanmar before the attack. 00:03:48.06\00:03:50.49 With the income from his dry goods store 00:03:51.56\00:03:53.96 and the shelter from his two story wood house, 00:03:54.00\00:03:56.36 her husband provided for all his family's needs, 00:03:56.40\00:03:58.80 but now they have no choice, 00:03:59.90\00:04:01.84 but to accept aid and wait. 00:04:01.87\00:04:03.84 Yasmin and her family 00:04:05.11\00:04:06.44 are part at the 800,000 Rohingya refugees 00:04:06.47\00:04:09.48 living in Bangladesh, 00:04:09.51\00:04:10.98 yearning to return home to Myanmar. 00:04:11.01\00:04:13.05 Until then ADRA and other humanitarian organizations 00:04:14.68\00:04:18.69 are working to meet their needs. 00:04:18.72\00:04:20.56 Your support of ADRA, 00:04:20.59\00:04:22.09 and the mission offerings makes a tangible difference 00:04:22.12\00:04:25.59 for people like Yasmin and her family. 00:04:25.63\00:04:28.26 My guest is Pastor Matthieu, 00:04:29.46\00:04:31.13 who is the secretary of the Benin Mission. 00:04:31.17\00:04:33.84 Pastor Matthieu, thank you so much for joining us today. 00:04:33.87\00:04:35.80 Oh, happy to meet you. 00:04:35.84\00:04:37.44 Meet me again, 00:04:37.47\00:04:38.81 because I have to give a little bit of history here 00:04:38.84\00:04:40.21 because more than 20 years ago, Elder Mike Ryan, 00:04:40.24\00:04:43.95 who was then the director of Global Mission 00:04:43.98\00:04:45.81 for the General Conference and I, 00:04:45.85\00:04:48.15 who was his communication director, 00:04:48.18\00:04:50.82 traveled to West Africa. 00:04:50.85\00:04:52.79 And it was my first ever trip for Global Mission. 00:04:52.82\00:04:55.99 And when we were in Burkina Faso, 00:04:56.02\00:04:58.39 we found a very, very small church. 00:04:58.43\00:05:00.63 I'm guessing that perhaps there may have been 50 members 00:05:00.66\00:05:02.93 in the entire country. 00:05:02.96\00:05:04.50 But we were visiting global mission pioneers 00:05:04.53\00:05:06.74 who were starting new groups of believers there. 00:05:06.77\00:05:09.50 And this is where I met Pastor Matthieu. 00:05:09.54\00:05:12.24 And by, by surprise today, 00:05:12.27\00:05:15.68 I met him again here in Nigeria. 00:05:15.71\00:05:18.35 And Pastor Matthieu actually came from Togo to Burkina Faso 00:05:18.38\00:05:23.62 because he was the close culturally, I guess. 00:05:23.65\00:05:26.12 Yes. 00:05:26.15\00:05:27.49 Similar language? 00:05:27.52\00:05:29.06 Not similar. 00:05:29.09\00:05:30.43 - You had to learn? - Yeah, it's... 00:05:30.46\00:05:31.79 I learned the language there. 00:05:31.83\00:05:33.83 Yeah, so he was a Global Mission pioneer missionary 00:05:33.86\00:05:36.73 came to Burkina Faso. 00:05:36.77\00:05:38.43 Now tell me, what did you do while 00:05:38.47\00:05:40.30 you were there as a pioneer? 00:05:40.34\00:05:42.60 When I was there as pioneers, 00:05:42.64\00:05:45.41 I was sent it to a territory where there is none, 00:05:45.44\00:05:50.85 no Adventist Church no, not one Adventist. 00:05:50.88\00:05:55.28 And then we start groups, and at first at a Koudougou, 00:05:55.32\00:06:01.19 and then we went back to Yaramoko. 00:06:01.22\00:06:04.53 Yaramoko we start another new group in Gundi. 00:06:04.56\00:06:08.23 During 10 years, 00:06:10.07\00:06:13.13 I has the grace to start 12 groups in Burkina Faso. 00:06:13.17\00:06:18.54 Today, some of them has become a very big churches 00:06:18.57\00:06:23.08 with many members. 00:06:23.11\00:06:24.85 I thank God for that. 00:06:24.88\00:06:26.21 Oh, yes. 00:06:26.25\00:06:27.58 And today I was showing Pastor Matthieu, 00:06:27.62\00:06:29.18 an old photo that I have of when we visited. 00:06:29.22\00:06:31.65 And he is there praying with a group of believers 00:06:31.69\00:06:35.09 that he started. 00:06:35.12\00:06:36.46 And that was a beautiful day. 00:06:36.49\00:06:37.83 Yes, that day I was a very... 00:06:37.86\00:06:40.16 Today for me, it's a beautiful day 00:06:40.20\00:06:42.16 because it reminds me that day where we were together. 00:06:42.20\00:06:49.07 In fact, what's happened that day 00:06:49.10\00:06:51.27 is that we are starting a small group 00:06:51.31\00:06:56.51 and then we are praying, 00:06:56.54\00:06:58.38 after the message we make a call 00:06:58.41\00:07:01.98 and then we are praying for those 00:07:02.02\00:07:04.52 who accepted Jesus. 00:07:04.55\00:07:06.45 And there is a little boy who was there observing 00:07:06.49\00:07:10.26 what is happening. 00:07:10.29\00:07:11.99 And then after that little boy 00:07:12.03\00:07:15.66 decided to give himself to Jesus. 00:07:15.70\00:07:18.43 God since that time was touch, has touched this little boy. 00:07:19.67\00:07:23.87 And today he grew up. 00:07:23.91\00:07:25.84 He gave his life since that time to Jesus. 00:07:25.87\00:07:28.94 He pulls his father and his family 00:07:28.98\00:07:31.35 to come to church. 00:07:31.38\00:07:32.98 And then that small boy you and decide today 00:07:33.01\00:07:37.39 to serve God as a pastor. 00:07:37.42\00:07:40.02 He went to Cosendai at Cameroon to study 00:07:40.06\00:07:44.79 and come back to serve as a pastor. 00:07:44.83\00:07:47.50 Beautiful story. 00:07:47.53\00:07:48.86 What a blessing. 00:07:48.90\00:07:50.23 Now, Pastor Matthieu, when you went there, 00:07:50.27\00:07:52.87 what approach did you take when you moved into a new area? 00:07:52.90\00:07:56.24 What did you do to start a new group of believers? 00:07:56.27\00:07:59.47 The real method is that I used to study 00:07:59.51\00:08:04.08 the culture of that group of people and find 00:08:04.11\00:08:09.45 what can be a link that I can use to approach them 00:08:09.48\00:08:14.49 through the... 00:08:14.52\00:08:15.86 with the Bible. 00:08:15.89\00:08:17.23 So I make, I familiarize with them. 00:08:17.26\00:08:21.56 I try to find out what they use 00:08:21.60\00:08:26.23 and then for Yaramoko, for example, 00:08:26.27\00:08:30.74 I find that there is some group 00:08:30.77\00:08:35.28 of idol worshipers, [indiscernible], 00:08:35.31\00:08:39.55 and the same is in Togo and then they gathered 00:08:39.58\00:08:43.15 and then they sing and then after they sing 00:08:43.18\00:08:46.89 they make their sacrifice. 00:08:46.92\00:08:48.99 So, I think I can use that method. 00:08:49.02\00:08:53.60 So, I tried to find how can I use the same... 00:08:53.63\00:08:59.43 The Word of God to translate to there was to a song. 00:08:59.47\00:09:05.57 And then we sing and then people coming out 00:09:05.61\00:09:09.38 and then when they are out and then we preach to them, 00:09:09.41\00:09:13.18 we talk to them as Jesus, as Jesus used to do. 00:09:13.21\00:09:17.95 And we preached the gospel and they were an interest. 00:09:17.99\00:09:23.02 Is that method I used in Burkina Faso at Yaramoko. 00:09:23.06\00:09:27.70 When I went to another area 00:09:27.73\00:09:30.60 where they use to... 00:09:30.63\00:09:36.00 The young people used to drink coffee. 00:09:36.04\00:09:40.11 So, the method I use that, I gather the young people, 00:09:40.14\00:09:46.98 and then instead of use coffee, 00:09:47.02\00:09:50.72 I found something that is good for the health. 00:09:50.75\00:09:55.09 And then we gather, and we drink together. 00:09:55.12\00:09:58.36 And then when we drink, 00:09:58.39\00:10:00.53 it will be good occasion to share the gospel with them. 00:10:00.56\00:10:05.40 Thank God, it worked. 00:10:05.43\00:10:07.07 God used many... 00:10:07.10\00:10:10.31 I think that is the orientation of the Holy Spirit 00:10:10.34\00:10:14.01 by using the method of Jesus Christ, 00:10:14.04\00:10:17.75 mingling with people, have their confidence, 00:10:17.78\00:10:22.68 find something in their culture, 00:10:22.72\00:10:24.99 and then with that, it's a bridge to reach them. 00:10:25.02\00:10:28.69 That's why we use. 00:10:28.72\00:10:30.06 Beautiful. 00:10:30.09\00:10:31.43 Matthieu has just described 00:10:31.46\00:10:32.99 what Global Mission is all about 00:10:33.03\00:10:34.50 following Christ's method of ministry and finding leaks, 00:10:34.53\00:10:37.87 bridges to the culture, not, 00:10:37.90\00:10:39.33 not to become like that culture, 00:10:39.37\00:10:41.07 but to speak the language they understand. 00:10:41.10\00:10:43.34 Yeah, it's true. 00:10:43.37\00:10:45.07 So, how does it make you feel 00:10:45.11\00:10:46.54 when you know that 12 new groups 00:10:46.57\00:10:48.21 were established and that the church 00:10:48.24\00:10:49.98 has continued to grow? 00:10:50.01\00:10:51.35 How do you feel? 00:10:51.38\00:10:52.71 Very, very happy, very happy. 00:10:52.75\00:10:54.75 Then in two weeks, in one week, 00:10:54.78\00:10:57.62 I will go to Burkina Faso. 00:10:57.65\00:10:59.22 Wonderful. 00:10:59.25\00:11:00.59 Because I heard that there is a church 00:11:00.62\00:11:03.12 that we established that people today many has gone. 00:11:03.16\00:11:09.83 It's paining me full, but if I... 00:11:09.86\00:11:13.57 If I had a good news, 00:11:13.60\00:11:15.04 that the group that we established today 00:11:15.07\00:11:17.74 became a very big church. 00:11:17.77\00:11:19.84 It make me very happy. 00:11:19.87\00:11:21.21 Wonderful. 00:11:21.24\00:11:22.58 Because God sent me to... 00:11:22.61\00:11:24.18 So, and He himself 00:11:26.51\00:11:28.98 is making grow this fruit 00:11:29.02\00:11:33.59 that was sowed. 00:11:33.62\00:11:35.49 Beautiful. Wonderful. 00:11:35.52\00:11:36.86 I was very happy, very, very happy. 00:11:36.89\00:11:39.06 It made me very happy. 00:11:39.09\00:11:40.60 Pastor Matthieu, God bless you and your family 00:11:40.63\00:11:42.30 and your ministry in Benin. 00:11:42.33\00:11:43.67 Amen. 00:11:43.70\00:11:45.03 And as you also care for Burkina Faso. 00:11:45.07\00:11:46.40 Yeah, thank you. Thank you very much. 00:11:46.43\00:11:47.97 Thank you also, because I like mission work 00:11:48.00\00:11:53.74 and then I find that in you, and I was very happy for you. 00:11:53.78\00:11:58.08 Thank you very much. 00:11:58.11\00:11:59.45 And please pray for Matthieu. 00:11:59.48\00:12:01.12 Pray for the church throughout West Africa, 00:12:01.15\00:12:03.59 many challenges, but God is blessing 00:12:03.62\00:12:06.35 and new groups are being planted 00:12:06.39\00:12:07.82 and are growing to His glory. 00:12:07.86\00:12:09.49 We'll be right back after this break. 00:12:09.52\00:12:11.23
