A teenager sets a golden example in India. 00:00:07.77\00:00:11.31 The Adventist Development and Relief Agency 00:00:11.34\00:00:13.41 helps people in need 00:00:13.44\00:00:15.11 and another delicious tasty international vegetarian recipe 00:00:15.14\00:00:19.51 from the Mission 360° Kitchen. 00:00:19.55\00:00:21.38 All this and much more coming up next. 00:00:21.42\00:00:24.02 Hello, and welcome to Mission 360° 00:00:56.25\00:00:58.45 coming to you today from Lagos, Nigeria. 00:00:58.49\00:01:01.39 I'm Gary Krause. 00:01:01.42\00:01:03.16 Lagos is a city that's very difficult to understand. 00:01:03.19\00:01:06.39 It's enigmatic in some ways. 00:01:06.43\00:01:09.13 It's one of the most Christianized areas 00:01:09.16\00:01:11.53 in terms of everywhere you go there churches, 00:01:11.57\00:01:14.10 but it'll also has one of the highest crime rates 00:01:14.14\00:01:16.91 in the world. 00:01:16.94\00:01:18.54 As we see, many places are very densely populated 00:01:18.57\00:01:22.21 then assigned to sprawl out 00:01:22.24\00:01:23.65 and nobody really knows how many people live in Lagos, 00:01:23.68\00:01:27.32 but credible estimates say 00:01:27.35\00:01:29.22 it's more than 21 million people. 00:01:29.25\00:01:31.99 It has surpassed Cairo 00:01:32.02\00:01:33.99 as the largest city on the African continent. 00:01:34.02\00:01:37.89 And the cities of Africa are growing faster 00:01:37.93\00:01:40.46 than anywhere in the world. 00:01:40.50\00:01:42.36 And Lagos is no exception as people by the thousands 00:01:42.40\00:01:45.47 are flooding and looking for opportunities. 00:01:45.50\00:01:48.17 We see the normal contrast between the poor and the rich, 00:01:48.20\00:01:51.47 and it is a tremendous mission challenge. 00:01:51.51\00:01:54.58 What we're gonna learn more about Lagos 00:01:54.61\00:01:56.01 on today's program, but first up, 00:01:56.04\00:01:58.08 let's travel to India and meet a young person 00:01:58.11\00:02:00.65 who is volunteering and working in the community 00:02:00.68\00:02:03.72 to make a difference. 00:02:03.75\00:02:05.15 Shahjahan is only a teenager, 00:02:13.33\00:02:15.43 but that doesn't stop her from holding a crucial role 00:02:15.46\00:02:18.23 in her village in northern India. 00:02:18.27\00:02:20.04 Shahjahan is accompanied by her friend 00:02:27.21\00:02:29.08 and co-worker Zemat. 00:02:29.11\00:02:31.65 They're visiting a mother 00:02:31.68\00:02:33.01 who just gave birth to a baby boy. 00:02:33.05\00:02:35.32 Shahjahan's work is much more than it seems. 00:02:39.55\00:02:43.39 She's not just pouring two glasses of water. 00:02:43.43\00:02:46.53 She's saving a life. 00:02:46.56\00:02:49.40 She pours a few more ounces into both cups, 00:02:49.43\00:02:52.50 representing the first of three immunizations 00:02:52.53\00:02:55.27 in a local vaccination plan. 00:02:55.30\00:02:58.77 The plan immunizes against diphtheria, 00:02:58.81\00:03:01.58 whooping cough, tetanus, hepatitis B, and influenza. 00:03:01.61\00:03:06.01 Shahjahan and other women like her 00:03:09.35\00:03:11.19 are community mobilization coordinators 00:03:11.22\00:03:14.02 known as CMC's. 00:03:14.06\00:03:16.06 They work with the Government of India 00:03:27.44\00:03:29.37 and with humanitarian agencies 00:03:29.40\00:03:31.04 like Adventist Development and Relief Agency or ADRA. 00:03:31.07\00:03:35.04 Their goal is to keep women and children 00:03:35.08\00:03:37.05 protected against diseases 00:03:37.08\00:03:38.75 common during pregnancy and infancy. 00:03:38.78\00:03:42.28 CMC's use posters, demonstrations, 00:03:42.32\00:03:45.42 one on one conversations, and women-only group meetings 00:03:45.45\00:03:49.02 to ensure that all mothers have free and easy access 00:03:49.06\00:03:52.66 to life saving information and medical care. 00:03:52.69\00:03:55.66 The water glass demonstration, for example, 00:03:59.10\00:04:01.90 conveys the importance of vaccines to mothers 00:04:01.94\00:04:04.37 who are skeptical, 00:04:04.41\00:04:05.87 often because they're afraid of the fever 00:04:05.91\00:04:07.68 that commonly accompanies vaccination. 00:04:07.71\00:04:10.48 Such demonstrations are almost always successful 00:04:10.51\00:04:13.48 at convincing the mothers. 00:04:13.52\00:04:15.02 This grassroots approach to national health 00:04:19.72\00:04:22.16 is the main reason 00:04:22.19\00:04:23.53 India was declared polio free in 2014. 00:04:23.56\00:04:27.23 It was our CMCs continuous effort. 00:04:27.26\00:04:30.23 They mobilized the community, 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.03 particularly they talk to the mothers 00:04:32.07\00:04:33.80 and they tell them 00:04:33.84\00:04:36.07 the importance of the polio immunization. 00:04:36.10\00:04:38.47 And also, we involved the whole community 00:04:38.51\00:04:43.51 like we work closely with the local influencers. 00:04:43.55\00:04:47.48 In a country of more than 1 billion people 00:04:47.52\00:04:50.32 fighting a contagious disease takes education, 00:04:50.35\00:04:53.92 dedicated health workers, 00:04:53.96\00:04:55.39 and concerned citizens like Shahjahan 00:04:55.42\00:04:57.93 and the men and women of ADRA. 00:04:57.96\00:05:00.16 Your support of ADRA helps women and children 00:05:00.20\00:05:02.86 around the world live healthier, happier lives. 00:05:02.90\00:05:08.60 My guest is Dr. Paul Ananaba, 00:05:08.64\00:05:10.81 who is a senior advocate of Nigeria. 00:05:10.84\00:05:14.54 So thank you for taking the time 00:05:14.58\00:05:16.31 out of your busy schedule to share with us. 00:05:16.34\00:05:18.41 Thank you, Gary. 00:05:18.45\00:05:19.78 Now, you are a senior advocate of Nigeria, 00:05:19.81\00:05:23.28 what does that mean? 00:05:23.32\00:05:24.65 What do you do? 00:05:24.69\00:05:26.02 Well, it's never get up Nigeria is the highest status lawyer 00:05:26.05\00:05:30.29 contained in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. 00:05:30.33\00:05:33.90 Now since the inception of this country 00:05:33.93\00:05:37.23 there are less than 500 in advocates dead or living. 00:05:37.27\00:05:41.57 Okay, so if I get into trouble 00:05:41.60\00:05:43.71 I'm coming to you to help me out. 00:05:43.74\00:05:46.17 Yeah, you've also want to do other good things. 00:05:46.21\00:05:48.61 Okay. 00:05:48.64\00:05:49.98 Might be a better idea. 00:05:50.01\00:05:52.98 You are a very busy man, obviously, 00:05:53.01\00:05:55.22 but you are involved in urban mission. 00:05:55.25\00:05:58.39 Why? 00:05:58.42\00:05:59.75 How? 00:05:59.79\00:06:01.12 Why, because as a legal practitioner, 00:06:01.16\00:06:05.93 I know that the last words of a man dying was of a man. 00:06:05.96\00:06:11.13 The last words of a man involving so much in law, 00:06:11.17\00:06:14.20 'cause God always gives that. 00:06:14.24\00:06:15.87 Now the last words of Jesus in Matthew 28 from 18 down, 00:06:15.90\00:06:21.68 he says, "Now all powers on heaven and earth 00:06:21.71\00:06:25.25 given unto me. 00:06:25.28\00:06:26.75 Go ye." 00:06:26.78\00:06:28.12 It goes all the way down to say, 00:06:28.15\00:06:29.62 "On as you go, I am with you always." 00:06:29.65\00:06:32.49 So that's the best you can get, as far as I know, in the Bible, 00:06:32.52\00:06:38.09 that the Master agree, 00:06:38.13\00:06:40.46 He will be with you ways to go to preserve. 00:06:40.50\00:06:43.87 And that's why I make it a priority. 00:06:43.90\00:06:47.40 And what I do 00:06:47.44\00:06:49.74 to serve the Master through evangelism. 00:06:49.77\00:06:54.04 How, I know that's no time not to try to make out 00:06:54.08\00:06:59.98 because at the best of this profession, 00:07:00.02\00:07:03.32 it will not give you salvation. 00:07:03.35\00:07:05.05 Salvation is brought in God. 00:07:05.09\00:07:07.16 When you seek first the Kingdom of God 00:07:07.19\00:07:09.69 if you're including professional success 00:07:09.72\00:07:12.29 will be added, of course, 00:07:12.33\00:07:13.66 how did I become a senior advocate of Nigeria 00:07:13.70\00:07:15.66 if God was not there. 00:07:15.70\00:07:17.47 Now so, at present I have five offices 00:07:17.50\00:07:20.27 in five regions in the country, 00:07:20.30\00:07:22.50 but then there has to be time for the Master 00:07:22.54\00:07:26.44 who made those things possible. 00:07:26.47\00:07:28.74 Wonderful. 00:07:28.78\00:07:30.11 So tell me about what sort of outreach 00:07:30.15\00:07:33.68 you have been involved in? 00:07:33.72\00:07:35.12 Well, from house to house 00:07:35.15\00:07:39.99 to public evangelism, 00:07:40.02\00:07:42.06 Revelation seminars, 00:07:42.09\00:07:44.93 public teachings, 00:07:44.96\00:07:46.56 and then ICT enabled evangelism. 00:07:46.59\00:07:52.13 Every day, 00:07:52.17\00:07:54.14 I send across the world by vortex 00:07:54.17\00:07:59.94 and in my ethnic group, all over the world, 00:07:59.97\00:08:04.85 we'll have platforms. 00:08:04.88\00:08:07.52 Every Saturday morning, 00:08:07.55\00:08:09.98 people look forward to my post on Christianity. 00:08:10.02\00:08:15.26 So that is ongoing, it's been on for several years. 00:08:15.29\00:08:19.63 It's looked up also. 00:08:19.66\00:08:21.23 So then when you get to my office 00:08:21.26\00:08:24.33 the person that greets you 00:08:24.37\00:08:25.87 is that you are given Adventist belief, 00:08:25.90\00:08:29.40 given Adventist's documents 00:08:29.44\00:08:32.34 and then many times into books, discussions, 00:08:32.37\00:08:35.28 how many have become Adventist to God. 00:08:35.31\00:08:38.45 Okay. 00:08:38.48\00:08:39.81 So before you take on a client, they have to take the book... 00:08:39.85\00:08:43.05 They get it, as they come there's sitting 00:08:43.08\00:08:45.85 my receptionist structured in such a manner as you come. 00:08:45.89\00:08:49.32 The receptionist is a person welcome you 00:08:49.36\00:08:51.69 and hand you that book. 00:08:51.73\00:08:53.06 Okay. 00:08:53.09\00:08:55.43 It makes the impact in the lives of many people 00:08:55.46\00:08:57.43 because they fear that such level of success 00:08:57.47\00:09:02.50 having attended any religion 00:09:02.54\00:09:05.04 you have it should be looked at. 00:09:05.07\00:09:07.48 And then in the country 00:09:07.51\00:09:12.05 there's a lot of corruption 00:09:12.08\00:09:13.62 and issues those of us who are Christians 00:09:13.65\00:09:19.62 including particularly what I do 00:09:19.65\00:09:22.22 got to be known that, 00:09:22.26\00:09:23.59 oh, this one is an Adventist Christian 00:09:23.63\00:09:25.83 so it's a bit different. 00:09:25.86\00:09:27.96 So people often come to my office 00:09:28.00\00:09:29.66 just get to know my religion, my God and all that. 00:09:29.70\00:09:34.20 Wonderful. 00:09:34.24\00:09:35.57 Now you were also involved in planting a church 00:09:35.60\00:09:38.41 not too far from here? 00:09:38.44\00:09:39.77 Yes. Enugu. 00:09:39.81\00:09:41.24 Why did you decide to plant a church? 00:09:41.28\00:09:44.05 It was necessary for a church to be in that neighborhood 00:09:44.08\00:09:46.92 and efforts were being made and the pastor then 00:09:46.95\00:09:51.02 who is seated here now posted me to Enugu 00:09:51.05\00:09:54.22 and I got there, 00:09:54.26\00:09:55.59 and by God's grace we moved, 00:09:55.62\00:09:58.49 and then the church by God's grace started. 00:09:58.53\00:10:02.16 And today we'll have one of the modern churches 00:10:02.20\00:10:04.77 in Lagos there. 00:10:04.80\00:10:06.13 And how many members? 00:10:06.17\00:10:08.44 Well, on average, we have 150 persons attendance. 00:10:08.47\00:10:13.88 Excellent. Excellent. 00:10:13.91\00:10:16.24 Wonderful now a city like Lagos is not easy. 00:10:16.28\00:10:19.71 You face many challenges. 00:10:19.75\00:10:21.08 What are some of the major challenges you face? 00:10:21.12\00:10:22.75 There're so many, Gary. 00:10:22.78\00:10:24.92 There is multiplicity of religions in Lagos 00:10:24.95\00:10:30.16 ranging from whatever religion you can think about. 00:10:30.19\00:10:34.20 Lagos is said to be center of excellence, 00:10:34.23\00:10:36.77 both in religion and in evil. 00:10:36.80\00:10:38.33 Okay. 00:10:38.37\00:10:39.70 So those are the first major challenges we face. 00:10:39.73\00:10:42.60 And in church plants 00:10:42.64\00:10:44.94 and people are always in a hurry in Lagos. 00:10:44.97\00:10:47.54 I don't know whether that's any city 00:10:47.58\00:10:49.38 in order like Lagos. 00:10:49.41\00:10:50.75 So that's the challenge 00:10:50.78\00:10:52.58 and the challenge of even getting men 00:10:52.61\00:10:55.12 to plant a church 00:10:55.15\00:10:57.19 and then the accessibility to the church 00:10:57.22\00:10:59.39 and to the place and all that, 00:10:59.42\00:11:02.02 and then because of crimes 00:11:02.06\00:11:05.49 and all that people also losing faith in religion. 00:11:05.53\00:11:09.23 Yes. Exactly. 00:11:09.26\00:11:10.60 Now you told me earlier about somebody 00:11:10.63\00:11:13.87 that you studied with. 00:11:13.90\00:11:16.14 What happened to him now? 00:11:16.17\00:11:17.51 Yes, he's now a pastor. 00:11:17.54\00:11:19.61 I mean, one of my Revelation seminars, 00:11:19.64\00:11:23.31 I met a very stubborn young man. 00:11:23.35\00:11:25.78 His name is Grillo, he's now Pastor Grillo. 00:11:25.81\00:11:29.08 And he was very stubborn at the Revelation seminar. 00:11:29.12\00:11:33.25 But the Spirit of God made impression on him. 00:11:33.29\00:11:36.56 He got baptized. 00:11:36.59\00:11:37.93 The family rejected him. 00:11:37.96\00:11:40.26 The church, the formed fellowship came together, 00:11:40.30\00:11:43.26 sent him to us while he graduated as a pastor, 00:11:43.30\00:11:46.94 and then not too long after he became a pastor. 00:11:46.97\00:11:50.61 He was now posted to be my church pastor 00:11:50.64\00:11:53.24 in Maryland here. 00:11:53.27\00:11:54.61 That's beautiful. 00:11:54.64\00:11:55.98 Well, Dr. Paul, 00:11:56.01\00:11:57.61 thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:11:57.65\00:11:59.31 And may God bless you and your ministry. 00:11:59.35\00:12:00.68 Thank you, Gary. 00:12:00.72\00:12:02.12 And viewers at home, please pray for Lagos. 00:12:02.15\00:12:05.85 This is a huge mission for more than 21 million people 00:12:05.89\00:12:09.29 to spread out. 00:12:09.32\00:12:10.83 And in human terms, 00:12:10.86\00:12:13.66 we would say how is this possible, 00:12:13.70\00:12:15.23 but we know that with you, all things are possible. 00:12:15.26\00:12:18.33 Please, please pray for those 00:12:18.37\00:12:19.80 who are involved in church planting here. 00:12:19.83\00:12:22.20 We'll be right back after this break. 00:12:22.24\00:12:24.07
