Welcome back to Ho Chi Minh City. 00:00:15.21\00:00:17.38 This city formerly known as Saigon 00:00:17.41\00:00:19.31 was of course very famous for the pivotal role 00:00:19.35\00:00:21.65 it played during the Vietnam War. 00:00:21.68\00:00:24.05 Today, lots of tourists come here 00:00:24.09\00:00:25.49 and they look at sites such as this. 00:00:25.52\00:00:28.16 Notre Dom Cathedral, 00:00:28.19\00:00:29.56 many, many Neo-colonial French architecture examples 00:00:29.59\00:00:33.56 all around the city. 00:00:33.60\00:00:35.03 And this is notable because 00:00:35.06\00:00:36.56 all the materials were imported from the country of France. 00:00:36.60\00:00:40.00 Well, next up we visit with Greg 00:00:40.04\00:00:41.77 and Amy Whitsett in Chiang Mai, Thailand. 00:00:41.80\00:00:45.81 So I have enjoyed living 00:00:45.84\00:00:47.68 and working in Asia for the last 16 years. 00:00:47.71\00:00:51.01 I'm the director of the Global Mission Center 00:00:51.05\00:00:52.71 for East Asian religions. 00:00:52.75\00:00:54.12 And when I first came to Asia to share my testimony 00:00:54.15\00:00:58.79 and share the good news with my friends, Buddhists. 00:00:58.82\00:01:02.49 I didn't know how to begin. 00:01:02.52\00:01:03.89 And I was teaching in a college. 00:01:03.93\00:01:06.39 One of my students was a Buddhist monk. 00:01:06.43\00:01:08.66 And as it became time for, 00:01:08.70\00:01:11.13 you know, December Christmas time, 00:01:11.17\00:01:13.10 he asked me, said, "So tell me, what is Christmas all about?" 00:01:13.13\00:01:16.24 And I thought, "Wow, what an opportunity." 00:01:16.27\00:01:18.14 Here's someone who wants to know about my religion. 00:01:18.17\00:01:20.48 So I didn't know where to begin, 00:01:20.51\00:01:21.91 I thought, well, 00:01:21.94\00:01:23.48 they don't understand why we needed a Savior, 00:01:23.51\00:01:25.38 so I decided I should just do quick overview, 00:01:25.41\00:01:28.35 starting with creation and the fall 00:01:28.38\00:01:30.65 and the promise that Messiah would come 00:01:30.69\00:01:32.15 and then talk about His birth 00:01:32.19\00:01:33.69 and then I realize, well, if I just stop with His birth, 00:01:33.72\00:01:36.49 he doesn't understand what it happened next. 00:01:36.52\00:01:39.53 So then I talked about how Jesus went about 00:01:39.56\00:01:42.43 healing people in His teachings, 00:01:42.46\00:01:44.00 and then He was crucified on the cross 00:01:44.03\00:01:45.90 and He died for us. 00:01:45.93\00:01:47.27 He rose from the dead. 00:01:47.30\00:01:48.67 And He went back to heaven, and He's coming back soon. 00:01:48.70\00:01:51.77 And you know what his response was? 00:01:51.81\00:01:54.04 He was actually giggling out of embarrassment 00:01:54.08\00:01:56.44 of what I had just unloaded on him, 00:01:56.48\00:01:58.31 and it didn't really make sense to him. 00:01:58.35\00:02:00.42 So I began to realize early on that, 00:02:00.45\00:02:04.89 it doesn't make sense 00:02:04.92\00:02:06.25 what I share with my Buddhist friends. 00:02:06.29\00:02:08.42 And so what do I do? I was kind of at a quandary. 00:02:08.46\00:02:11.33 So my wife and I would just like 00:02:11.36\00:02:12.69 to take a couple of minutes 00:02:12.73\00:02:14.06 and talk to you about these challenges that we face. 00:02:14.10\00:02:17.33 Something that we've discovered is that 00:02:17.37\00:02:18.83 you can actually use the analogy of sports 00:02:18.87\00:02:22.30 to understand the differences between the Buddhist worldview 00:02:22.34\00:02:25.04 and a Christian worldview. 00:02:25.07\00:02:26.57 The Christian worldview is very similar 00:02:26.61\00:02:28.01 to soccer or football. 00:02:28.04\00:02:30.11 With soccer or football, you have two teams 00:02:30.15\00:02:32.38 who are competing against each other 00:02:32.41\00:02:34.35 physically, actually fighting each other 00:02:34.38\00:02:36.69 for the ball for control. 00:02:36.72\00:02:38.45 And, you know, 00:02:38.49\00:02:40.36 you've got to get your ball into the net 00:02:40.39\00:02:43.73 on the other side of the field. 00:02:43.76\00:02:45.89 You've got people who are trying to stop you, 00:02:45.93\00:02:47.50 trying to steal the ball from you. 00:02:47.53\00:02:49.90 You have people who can help you. 00:02:49.93\00:02:51.27 Your coach is there to help you and to support you, 00:02:51.30\00:02:53.67 and to give you some guidance and some direction, 00:02:53.70\00:02:56.10 and you have your whole team, you work together as a team 00:02:56.14\00:02:59.81 to move your ball into your net. 00:02:59.84\00:03:03.38 Another key importance with this analogy 00:03:03.41\00:03:05.91 is that with soccer or football, 00:03:05.95\00:03:08.65 you have a very limited timeframe. 00:03:08.68\00:03:10.89 You're only on the field for about 90 minutes, 00:03:10.92\00:03:12.82 45 minutes for each half. 00:03:12.85\00:03:14.76 And whoever gets the most points 00:03:14.79\00:03:16.79 at the end of that 90 minutes wins. 00:03:16.83\00:03:21.23 Also, it's interesting to note that you can be on the bench. 00:03:21.26\00:03:24.53 You don't actually have to touch the ball once 00:03:24.57\00:03:26.77 during the game and you can still win. 00:03:26.80\00:03:28.44 That's true, my team wins. Right. 00:03:28.47\00:03:29.80 What's important is that you're on a team 00:03:29.84\00:03:31.94 and we see this in Christianity. 00:03:31.97\00:03:34.21 There's a big, big battle between God, 00:03:34.24\00:03:37.71 between Satan, we have to choose a side. 00:03:37.75\00:03:40.32 And there's a limited timeframe. 00:03:40.35\00:03:41.88 We understand as Seventh-day Adventist Christians 00:03:41.92\00:03:44.09 that Jesus is coming and He's coming very soon, 00:03:44.12\00:03:46.55 which gives us a great amount of a sense of urgency, 00:03:46.59\00:03:51.63 urgency that time is limited. 00:03:51.66\00:03:53.26 We've really got to work hard. 00:03:53.29\00:03:54.63 We got to learn how to work as a team. 00:03:54.66\00:03:56.00 We've got to do our best using the skills 00:03:56.03\00:03:58.00 that each individual has 00:03:58.03\00:04:00.34 to play the game of soccer or golf, 00:04:00.37\00:04:03.30 or in this case, Christianity. 00:04:03.34\00:04:05.04 And the other limit on time, of course, 00:04:05.07\00:04:06.47 is that we only have one life, right? 00:04:06.51\00:04:07.84 Right. 00:04:07.88\00:04:09.21 And we have to choose in this life 00:04:09.24\00:04:10.58 whom we will serve. 00:04:10.61\00:04:11.95 So, that's the Christian perspective. 00:04:11.98\00:04:14.45 But what about the Buddhist perspective? 00:04:14.48\00:04:17.02 And all of our Asian friends in this part of the world? 00:04:17.05\00:04:20.39 Well, their perspective 00:04:20.42\00:04:21.76 is actually a little bit more like golf. 00:04:21.79\00:04:24.29 Now with golf, everyone has their own ball. 00:04:24.33\00:04:26.66 You don't hit each other's ball. 00:04:26.70\00:04:29.16 There's no teams, you know, you don't see team hats, 00:04:29.20\00:04:32.63 you know, and jerseys. 00:04:32.67\00:04:34.00 No, it's each individual is for himself, 00:04:34.04\00:04:35.60 he must win at his own way. 00:04:35.64\00:04:37.87 And actually, 00:04:37.91\00:04:39.24 golf is much more of a mental game 00:04:39.27\00:04:41.24 in the sense that it's a riddle. 00:04:41.28\00:04:43.55 How are you going to best play the game, 00:04:43.58\00:04:45.51 you have different clubs that you can use 00:04:45.55\00:04:47.62 and they all must be used you know, 00:04:47.65\00:04:49.55 for different purposes. 00:04:49.58\00:04:50.92 You have drivers and I don't know, 00:04:50.95\00:04:53.49 I don't play golf, but you have all irons 00:04:53.52\00:04:55.52 and the weather conditions even affects your game. 00:04:55.56\00:04:58.73 How fast the greens are playing and this type of thing. 00:04:58.76\00:05:01.70 And so, how is this like Buddhism? 00:05:01.73\00:05:05.23 Well, in Buddhism, 00:05:05.27\00:05:06.97 there's not really any opponent 00:05:07.00\00:05:09.00 who's out to get you to defeat you. 00:05:09.04\00:05:12.21 You're your own worst enemy. 00:05:12.24\00:05:13.68 And its focus is on self improvement, right? 00:05:13.71\00:05:17.38 And then you actually have 18 holes. 00:05:17.41\00:05:20.65 You know, a lot of people say is kind of expensive 00:05:20.68\00:05:22.38 to play the game of golf. 00:05:22.42\00:05:24.39 Actually, if you play really badly, 00:05:24.42\00:05:26.19 you can play all day until they close at night, 00:05:26.22\00:05:29.79 because, you know, it takes you so long 00:05:29.82\00:05:31.66 to get that ball into, into the cup. 00:05:31.69\00:05:35.46 So and I guess that's kind of like 00:05:35.50\00:05:37.27 how life could be in the Buddhist mindset is that, 00:05:37.30\00:05:39.53 depending on how well you play... 00:05:39.57\00:05:41.17 They're not very skilled. 00:05:41.20\00:05:42.54 Yeah, it could take you longer. 00:05:42.57\00:05:44.41 Also, a lot of Asians, a lot of Buddhists 00:05:44.44\00:05:46.37 have an understanding of the spirits. 00:05:46.41\00:05:48.28 And so who are they? 00:05:48.31\00:05:49.81 Are they against us? 00:05:49.84\00:05:51.18 Well, in Christianity, 00:05:51.21\00:05:52.71 we would say the spirits are fallen angels 00:05:52.75\00:05:54.58 who are against us, trying to defeat us, 00:05:54.62\00:05:56.82 but actually the way Buddhists would see spirit 00:05:56.85\00:05:59.92 is very different, 00:05:59.95\00:06:01.29 they would see it kind of like the wild animals in the forest. 00:06:01.32\00:06:03.56 Yes, you can get hurt by them, they could attack you, 00:06:03.59\00:06:05.49 they might see you as a meal. 00:06:05.53\00:06:07.06 But the animals in the forest are just doing 00:06:07.10\00:06:09.96 what that comes naturally and the same with spirits. 00:06:10.00\00:06:11.90 In fact, the spirits could help you 00:06:11.93\00:06:14.10 as much as hurt you, 00:06:14.14\00:06:15.47 like a sand trap on the golf green, 00:06:15.50\00:06:17.34 you know, you have a sand trap. 00:06:17.37\00:06:18.77 It's not running around trying to catch your ball. 00:06:18.81\00:06:20.98 The pond isn't moving around trying to block your shot. 00:06:21.01\00:06:23.65 No, it's just, it's there. 00:06:23.68\00:06:25.11 And you have to deal with these realities. 00:06:25.15\00:06:27.12 And so this is exactly like Buddhism 00:06:27.15\00:06:29.52 is we have to work with these environments, 00:06:29.55\00:06:32.62 and that it's just about improving ourselves. 00:06:32.65\00:06:36.99 So you see the difference. 00:06:37.03\00:06:38.36 When we talk about Christianity, 00:06:38.39\00:06:41.46 we talk about these things that is so different 00:06:41.50\00:06:44.13 from what the Buddhist has in mind 00:06:44.17\00:06:46.84 about what works. 00:06:46.87\00:06:48.30 So oftentimes what we do is we go to Buddhists 00:06:48.34\00:06:50.87 and we start talking about football, soccer, 00:06:50.91\00:06:55.08 and giving them all the rules 00:06:55.11\00:06:56.44 and how that's going to help them play a better game 00:06:56.48\00:06:58.25 and they'll sit there and scratch their head 00:06:58.28\00:06:59.61 and say, "Well, yeah, I guess you play on grass, 00:06:59.65\00:07:01.75 we play on grass." 00:07:01.78\00:07:03.59 You have a ball and we have a ball. 00:07:03.62\00:07:04.95 Yes, we both have balls and... 00:07:04.99\00:07:06.45 We run and get exercise, we run and get exercise. 00:07:06.49\00:07:08.66 So it's all the same. It's all good. 00:07:08.69\00:07:10.03 And in that level, yes, it's true. 00:07:10.06\00:07:11.53 All religions do teach morals, but the rules of the game 00:07:11.56\00:07:14.50 and the purpose is totally different. 00:07:14.53\00:07:16.53 And so what we need to do is take time to listen, 00:07:16.56\00:07:19.50 take time to observe, 00:07:19.53\00:07:21.04 and take time to learn so that we can share the gospel 00:07:21.07\00:07:24.04 in the right way. 00:07:24.07\00:07:25.41 So how can you begin? 00:07:25.44\00:07:26.78 Well, there's a couple things you can do. 00:07:26.81\00:07:28.54 If you have Buddhist friends or neighbors, 00:07:28.58\00:07:30.25 I encourage you to take time to get to know them, 00:07:30.28\00:07:32.41 just be a friend, earn their trust, 00:07:32.45\00:07:34.68 win their confidence and eventually 00:07:34.72\00:07:36.48 you'll be able to start sharing your own testimonies with them 00:07:36.52\00:07:38.72 about how God is changing you. 00:07:38.75\00:07:41.09 The second thing that you can do 00:07:41.12\00:07:42.46 is go to our website, cear.adventistmisison.org. 00:07:42.49\00:07:46.39 And there you will find some resources to help you 00:07:46.43\00:07:48.30 to understand Buddhism, 00:07:48.33\00:07:49.80 and to understand better how you can share 00:07:49.83\00:07:52.03 your relationship with Jesus with your Buddhist friends. 00:07:52.07\00:07:55.10 God bless you. 00:07:55.14\00:07:56.47 If you're enjoying today's program, 00:07:56.50\00:07:58.21 I invite you to follow us on Facebook or Instagram. 00:07:58.24\00:08:01.38 00:08:20.53\00:08:21.96 this church planting duo 00:08:22.00\00:08:23.43 began exploring their new community, 00:08:23.47\00:08:25.70 introducing themselves to neighbors 00:08:25.73\00:08:27.64 and hoping to connect with them. 00:08:27.67\00:08:29.70 They knew sharing the Adventist message 00:08:29.74\00:08:31.61 in a city like Lima could be challenging. 00:08:31.64\00:08:34.78 With a population of almost 10 million people, 00:08:34.81\00:08:37.15 Peru's capital is one of South America's largest 00:08:37.18\00:08:39.61 and busiest cities. 00:08:39.65\00:08:41.45 As in many other urban areas, people are often busy 00:08:41.48\00:08:44.65 and interest in religion is fading. 00:08:44.69\00:08:47.46 There was no Seventh-day Adventist congregation 00:08:47.49\00:08:49.99 in this part of the city 00:08:50.03\00:08:51.49 until a local Adventist family 00:08:51.53\00:08:53.63 took the initiative to start one. 00:08:53.66\00:08:56.36 First, they began meeting for worship in their home 00:08:56.40\00:08:58.93 and invited their neighbors to join them. 00:08:58.97\00:09:01.14 Then they invited theology students 00:09:01.17\00:09:02.87 from the Adventist University in Lima 00:09:02.90\00:09:04.81 to come preach in the streets. 00:09:04.84\00:09:06.98 This event stirred up a lot of interest 00:09:07.01\00:09:09.18 in the community. 00:09:09.21\00:09:10.71 As the family spoke more and more with their neighbors, 00:09:10.75\00:09:13.31 they realized there were many needs. 00:09:13.35\00:09:16.25 They recruited other Adventists in Lima 00:09:16.28\00:09:18.52 and arranged a health expo for the community. 00:09:18.55\00:09:20.92 People appreciated the compassion 00:09:20.96\00:09:22.99 and genuine care they encountered. 00:09:23.02\00:09:26.09 Soon after the first health expo, 00:09:26.13\00:09:27.90 Dina and Catherine were called to serve full time 00:09:27.93\00:09:31.03 through the 1000 Missionary Movement, 00:09:31.07\00:09:33.23 an initiative started and supported 00:09:33.27\00:09:34.87 by several of the Adventist churches world divisions. 00:09:34.90\00:09:39.34 When Dina and Catherine first knocked on Abigail's door, 00:09:39.37\00:09:42.51 they asked if they could pray with her. 00:09:42.54\00:09:44.95 Abigail gladly accepted their invitation, 00:09:44.98\00:09:47.52 and the girls returned each day for prayer. 00:09:47.55\00:09:50.89 After a few doorway prayers, Abigail invited them inside 00:09:50.92\00:09:54.86 where Dina and Catherine offered her Bible studies. 00:09:54.89\00:09:58.36 With each visit, the girls noticed 00:09:58.39\00:10:00.30 how Abigail struggled to maintain her home. 00:10:00.33\00:10:03.16 She was having a difficult pregnancy at the time 00:10:03.20\00:10:05.57 and had another child to care for. 00:10:05.60\00:10:08.14 She often didn't feel well enough 00:10:08.17\00:10:09.87 to keep up with household chores. 00:10:09.90\00:10:12.94 Dina and Catherine eagerly began to help. 00:10:12.97\00:10:16.18 They assisted Abigail by cleaning, cooking 00:10:16.21\00:10:18.85 and taking her child to school. 00:10:18.88\00:10:21.08 Adventist Church members in Lima 00:10:21.12\00:10:22.72 also gathered food to give to the family. 00:10:22.75\00:10:26.05 Their acts of kindness showed Abigail the love of Jesus. 00:10:26.09\00:10:30.06 It's been several months, 00:10:37.70\00:10:39.13 and Abigail still looks forward to the weekly Bible studies. 00:10:39.17\00:10:42.54 She's just one of 40 community members, 00:10:42.57\00:10:45.27 whom Dina and Catherine visit regularly. 00:10:45.31\00:10:48.74 Through Christ method, 00:10:48.78\00:10:50.15 Dina and Catherine have helped 00:10:50.18\00:10:51.61 plant a new church in this neighborhood 00:10:51.65\00:10:53.45 where about 30 people worship each Sabbath. 00:10:53.48\00:10:56.55 Please pray for church planters like Dina and Catharine 00:10:56.58\00:11:00.22 who are on the frontlines of
