Hi, my name is Daniele Kuhn 00:00:11.74\00:00:13.24 and I'm back here in Thailand 00:00:13.27\00:00:14.61 where I grew up as a missionary. 00:00:14.64\00:00:16.41 And today we get to interview my dad 00:00:16.44\00:00:18.05 and talk about his mission experience. 00:00:18.08\00:00:20.18 That and much more coming up next. 00:00:20.22\00:00:22.28 Wait, but I'm gonna give you the minute. 00:00:46.98\00:00:48.31 Okay. Okay. Okay. 00:00:48.34\00:00:50.45 Here. 00:00:50.48\00:00:51.88 Okay. 00:00:51.91\00:00:53.25 Hi, welcome to Mission 360°. 00:00:53.28\00:00:55.28 My name is Daniele Kuhn. 00:00:55.32\00:00:56.72 And I grew up in Thailand as a missionary. 00:00:56.75\00:00:59.95 As a kid, and today, 00:00:59.99\00:01:01.32 I'm going to be interviewing my dad 00:01:01.36\00:01:02.76 about his mission and his experience 00:01:02.79\00:01:05.43 in this amazing country of Thailand. 00:01:05.46\00:01:07.66 But first, let's watch a mission story 00:01:07.70\00:01:09.83 in the southern Asia region. 00:01:09.86\00:01:13.37 All the villagers raised to the airstrip 00:01:13.40\00:01:15.80 singing and dancing 00:01:15.84\00:01:17.21 when mission pilot Gary Roberts landed at Suminka, 00:01:17.24\00:01:20.58 a remote village 00:01:20.61\00:01:21.94 in the Indonesian province of Papua. 00:01:21.98\00:01:24.35 It had taken the villagers 10 years 00:01:24.38\00:01:26.48 to cut down the trees by hand 00:01:26.51\00:01:28.18 to clear the way for an airstrip 00:01:28.22\00:01:29.92 at their mountainous village. 00:01:29.95\00:01:31.52 And Gary's mission plane was the first to land. 00:01:31.55\00:01:34.82 This was a big event. 00:01:34.86\00:01:37.09 As Gary stepped out of the plane, 00:01:37.13\00:01:38.63 the crowd grew silent. 00:01:38.66\00:01:40.26 Their singing and dancing stopped. 00:01:40.30\00:01:42.73 "Is this a Seventh-day Adventists plane?" 00:01:42.76\00:01:45.37 a man asked. 00:01:45.40\00:01:47.17 The villagers had seen the Three Angels logo 00:01:47.20\00:01:50.01 on the airplane's tail. 00:01:50.04\00:01:51.97 Gary was surprised. 00:01:52.01\00:01:53.64 Suminka was the village previously accessible 00:01:53.68\00:01:56.14 only by a long trek by foot, 00:01:56.18\00:01:58.71 so he hadn't expected villagers 00:01:58.75\00:02:00.55 to have heard about the Adventist church. 00:02:00.58\00:02:02.92 The villager soon told him 00:02:02.95\00:02:04.45 that many of them were keeping the Sabbath. 00:02:04.49\00:02:06.86 The reason they said was 00:02:06.89\00:02:08.52 because of a Seventh-day Adventist dog. 00:02:08.56\00:02:12.63 This story started several years earlier 00:02:12.66\00:02:15.20 just across the border in Papua New Guinea 00:02:15.23\00:02:17.93 when an Adventist pastor named Moses 00:02:17.97\00:02:20.47 and a lay pastor named Darius 00:02:20.50\00:02:22.67 had the same dream on the same night. 00:02:22.70\00:02:26.47 In the morning, one said, "I had a dream last night." 00:02:26.51\00:02:29.68 The other said, "I did do but I didn't want to tell you." 00:02:29.71\00:02:33.18 They both had seen an angel in the dream 00:02:33.21\00:02:35.28 and the angel said, "Go to Suminka." 00:02:35.32\00:02:39.02 A few days later, 00:02:39.05\00:02:40.39 the two men set off on a three day hike to Suminka. 00:02:40.42\00:02:43.93 Arriving at the village, 00:02:43.96\00:02:45.29 they announced evangelistic meetings 00:02:45.33\00:02:47.03 would be held every evening for a week under a tree 00:02:47.06\00:02:49.96 on the far side of the village. 00:02:50.00\00:02:52.63 But by the day of the first meeting, 00:02:52.67\00:02:54.84 Pastor Moses fell ill with malaria. 00:02:54.87\00:02:57.64 He was terribly sick 00:02:57.67\00:02:59.21 and the villagers predicted that he would die. 00:02:59.24\00:03:01.81 "But if he gets better then we will listen to him 00:03:01.84\00:03:04.35 at the meeting," they said. 00:03:04.38\00:03:07.08 All day Pastor Moses was sick. 00:03:07.12\00:03:09.88 But at 5 pm he suddenly felt better. 00:03:09.92\00:03:13.15 He took a bath and preached. 00:03:13.19\00:03:15.32 Afterward he fell very ill again. 00:03:15.36\00:03:18.29 This happened all week. 00:03:18.33\00:03:20.26 He was sick until 5 pm, recovered, 00:03:20.30\00:03:23.60 took a bath and preached, then, he sank back into bed. 00:03:23.63\00:03:27.47 At the meetings he told the people 00:03:27.50\00:03:29.00 about the Sabbath 00:03:29.04\00:03:30.37 and cautioned against eating unclean meat such as pork. 00:03:30.41\00:03:33.68 Wild pigs are a popular dish in the Papua mountains. 00:03:33.71\00:03:37.88 When the week ended, Pastor Moses made an appeal, 00:03:37.91\00:03:41.32 but no one came forward. 00:03:41.35\00:03:43.79 Pastor Moses and Darius 00:03:43.82\00:03:45.49 returned home deeply disappointed. 00:03:45.52\00:03:48.72 They wondered why they had had the dream 00:03:48.76\00:03:50.63 without any results. 00:03:50.66\00:03:52.99 Back in Suminka, life resumed as normal 00:03:53.03\00:03:55.96 until Saturday morning, 00:03:56.00\00:03:58.10 the village's best hunting dog, Dolby, 00:03:58.13\00:04:01.00 got up and headed down the trail. 00:04:01.04\00:04:03.17 His owner and other villagers thought he was onto something, 00:04:03.20\00:04:05.91 so they followed. 00:04:05.94\00:04:07.28 Dolby went to the tree 00:04:07.31\00:04:08.64 where the missionary had spoken and sat down. 00:04:08.68\00:04:11.01 The villagers thought that was strange. 00:04:11.05\00:04:14.45 The next Saturday, Dolby did the same thing. 00:04:14.48\00:04:17.52 He got up, walked over to the tree and sat down. 00:04:17.55\00:04:21.26 He refused to hunt on Saturdays. 00:04:21.29\00:04:24.49 The villagers had noticed 00:04:24.53\00:04:25.86 that Dolby had stopped eating pork too. 00:04:25.89\00:04:29.10 He refused to hunt for wild pigs 00:04:29.13\00:04:31.53 and other unclean animals. 00:04:31.57\00:04:33.87 "Dolby has become a Seventh-day Adventist," 00:04:33.90\00:04:36.91 one villager said. 00:04:36.94\00:04:38.27 "If he worships on Sabbath, we should too," said another. 00:04:38.31\00:04:42.98 Many villagers began to keep the Sabbath 00:04:43.01\00:04:45.15 and stopped eating unclean foods. 00:04:45.18\00:04:47.98 Gary the mission pilot was so excited 00:04:48.02\00:04:50.22 when he heard the story 00:04:50.25\00:04:51.59 and he later called Pastor Moses. 00:04:51.62\00:04:53.82 The pastor was some distance away from Suminka, 00:04:53.86\00:04:56.76 so he contacted Darius 00:04:56.79\00:04:58.19 and told him to plan on spending a year 00:04:58.23\00:05:00.33 at the village, 00:05:00.36\00:05:01.70 teaching the people about Bible truths. 00:05:01.73\00:05:05.17 Today about half of the village of 200 adults and children 00:05:05.20\00:05:09.04 worship on Sabbath 00:05:09.07\00:05:10.41 and 21 people have been baptized. 00:05:10.44\00:05:13.51 Dolby still doesn't eat unclean food. 00:05:13.54\00:05:16.48 The villagers say he is a very healthy dog. 00:05:16.51\00:05:19.81 Hi, welcome to Chiang Mai. 00:05:49.84\00:05:51.55 I'm here with the most special guest, my dad. 00:05:51.58\00:05:54.25 And this is the first time in 10 years 00:05:54.28\00:05:55.85 that I've been back to the territory 00:05:55.88\00:05:57.95 where we used to serve as missionaries. 00:05:57.99\00:06:00.66 And we have a few questions for you, Dad, today. 00:06:00.69\00:06:03.29 The first question we wanna ask you is, 00:06:03.32\00:06:06.76 what are some of the memories you have serving here in Asia? 00:06:06.80\00:06:11.80 Well, Thailand is a wonderful place to be. 00:06:11.83\00:06:15.20 There are many, many, many, many memories, Danny. 00:06:15.24\00:06:19.24 I never forgot that, you guys went to school, 00:06:19.27\00:06:21.78 you were very small. 00:06:21.81\00:06:23.14 And as you entered there, 00:06:23.18\00:06:24.71 the students would wai 00:06:24.75\00:06:26.08 and lift their right foot to the teacher. 00:06:26.11\00:06:28.62 That was very nice and very kind. 00:06:28.65\00:06:30.82 But some of the highlights for me 00:06:30.85\00:06:33.46 is how kind and respectful 00:06:33.49\00:06:37.33 the Thai people were. 00:06:37.36\00:06:40.20 I must admit that there has been a big school for me 00:06:40.23\00:06:45.27 a lot of lessons of the kindness 00:06:45.30\00:06:50.91 and respect that this culture has. 00:06:50.94\00:06:53.84 And they are not Christians, you know? 00:06:53.88\00:06:55.41 That's an interesting part. 00:06:55.44\00:06:57.25 They are not Christians and they're very respectful. 00:06:57.28\00:06:59.88 They avoid problems, they avoid conflict. 00:06:59.91\00:07:02.72 They will go in extreme lengths sometimes. 00:07:02.75\00:07:05.09 Do you remember you guys forgot your little teddy bear one time 00:07:05.12\00:07:07.69 with a taxi? 00:07:07.72\00:07:09.09 The taxi driver went all the way back to our house 00:07:09.12\00:07:11.63 to return that stuffed animal for us. 00:07:11.66\00:07:16.97 Yeah, those are good memories. 00:07:17.00\00:07:19.17 How has the church done, Dad? 00:07:19.20\00:07:20.90 And what challenges did you face? 00:07:20.94\00:07:24.47 Well, what my job was over Asia in general, 00:07:24.51\00:07:29.71 but in Thailand, 00:07:29.74\00:07:31.08 the church was very diverse with people, 00:07:31.11\00:07:35.28 many refugees, 00:07:35.32\00:07:37.19 not so many real Thai Buddhists, 00:07:37.22\00:07:41.49 with many refugees 00:07:41.52\00:07:42.86 and many immigrants from different places, 00:07:42.89\00:07:45.16 and also some hill tribe's people compose the church. 00:07:45.19\00:07:49.30 I don't think we have grown that much. 00:07:49.33\00:07:52.97 Actually, it's a challenge. 00:07:53.00\00:07:56.24 Real Buddhists, we haven't really connected with them 00:07:56.27\00:08:01.11 somehow, the church still need to break through 00:08:01.14\00:08:04.61 on how to connect with the Buddhists. 00:08:04.65\00:08:06.28 So they see that the hope of Christ, 00:08:06.31\00:08:09.05 the hope of a God who is alive 00:08:09.08\00:08:13.12 and who is interacting with us, 00:08:13.15\00:08:15.49 can still be something 00:08:15.52\00:08:17.49 for the Thai people to appreciate, 00:08:17.53\00:08:18.96 the Buddhist people to appreciate. 00:08:18.99\00:08:21.00 That's true. 00:08:21.03\00:08:22.36 Hopefully new missionaries will come out 00:08:22.40\00:08:23.73 we can continue the work. 00:08:23.77\00:08:26.23 Can you share, Dad, 00:08:26.27\00:08:27.60 a rewarding experience you had here? 00:08:27.64\00:08:30.67 My rewarding experience. 00:08:30.71\00:08:34.58 Oh, there are many. 00:08:34.61\00:08:38.18 I remember when you guys went to school, 00:08:38.21\00:08:44.15 and the first time 00:08:44.19\00:08:47.39 you actually went to school. 00:08:47.42\00:08:52.43 You didn't speak any English or didn't speak any Thai. 00:08:52.46\00:08:56.10 And mom was very worried 00:08:56.13\00:08:58.60 and actually she was quite stressed 00:08:58.63\00:09:01.17 because of so many things. 00:09:01.20\00:09:03.71 But eventually she got together with many friends 00:09:03.74\00:09:08.74 from different parts of the world. 00:09:08.78\00:09:11.21 They used to study the Book of John together 00:09:11.25\00:09:14.68 I think once a week or once, or twice a month. 00:09:14.72\00:09:18.52 And mom made friendships that lasted until today. 00:09:18.55\00:09:22.59 After 10 years, she still has friends 00:09:22.62\00:09:24.56 that during a difficult time 00:09:24.59\00:09:28.30 met together 00:09:28.33\00:09:30.83 and they were mothers stressed with their children 00:09:30.87\00:09:35.60 with travelling spouses, 00:09:35.64\00:09:38.77 and they got together to pray and study the Bible. 00:09:38.81\00:09:41.54 They were not Adventists. 00:09:41.58\00:09:43.45 And mom made some friendships for life. 00:09:43.48\00:09:46.41 That was a big lesson for me 00:09:46.45\00:09:48.58 that quite often somebody in the family 00:09:48.62\00:09:53.25 who is doing something that could be considered 00:09:53.29\00:09:56.62 more than the mission work, 00:09:56.66\00:09:58.19 the formal mission work that we are called to do. 00:09:58.23\00:10:02.46 Yeah, I agree. 00:10:02.50\00:10:03.83 I remember those Bible studies at home 00:10:03.87\00:10:05.50 when I came home from school. 00:10:05.53\00:10:07.34 And I remember that she still keeps in touch with them today. 00:10:07.37\00:10:10.24 Yeah. It's great, you know. 00:10:10.27\00:10:11.87 So when God calls a family, 00:10:11.91\00:10:13.71 when God calls the missionaries, 00:10:13.74\00:10:15.14 sorry, He calls a family. 00:10:15.18\00:10:17.45 Everybody is part of that call. 00:10:17.48\00:10:20.15 Yeah, I remember even trying to do the same with my friends. 00:10:20.18\00:10:23.22 Because we see so many challenges 00:10:26.89\00:10:30.39 and hear different stories. 00:10:30.43\00:10:31.79 What advice would you give someone 00:10:31.83\00:10:33.50 considering mission work abroad? 00:10:33.53\00:10:36.23 I would say since we don't have much time, 00:10:36.26\00:10:38.80 the most important thing is the connection, 00:10:38.83\00:10:41.94 that you adjust to the culture 00:10:41.97\00:10:44.97 that you learn the language. 00:10:45.01\00:10:49.71 Learning the culture, and the language, 00:10:49.74\00:10:52.85 I would say are the two most effective way 00:10:52.88\00:10:56.48 and efficient way to penetrate 00:10:56.52\00:11:02.02 in the heart of people. 00:11:02.06\00:11:05.66 And how has the church developed in this region 00:11:05.69\00:11:08.30 since you left, do you know? 00:11:08.33\00:11:10.03 Well, when I look to Asia and I see the billions. 00:11:10.07\00:11:15.74 I'm puzzled by the challenge and by the opportunity 00:11:15.77\00:11:21.44 that we have much needs to be done. 00:11:21.48\00:11:25.18 Very little growth, I would say. 00:11:25.21\00:11:27.75 Very little growth actually has happened. 00:11:27.78\00:11:31.25 And we need to pray that God will open ways 00:11:31.29\00:11:35.26 and means people to reach other people. 00:11:35.29\00:11:39.73 Since we're talking about culture, Dad, 00:11:39.76\00:11:41.10 what are the some things and some values 00:11:41.13\00:11:42.96 we can learn from the Thai culture? 00:11:43.00\00:11:46.40 Yes, this is a very interesting question, Danny. 00:11:46.43\00:11:49.47 I quite often thought, 00:11:52.47\00:11:53.91 "What could we learn from other cultures?" 00:11:53.94\00:11:58.15 And this one specially has the value 00:11:58.18\00:12:01.28 of respect and honesty. 00:12:01.32\00:12:04.45 The respect for life, 00:12:04.49\00:12:06.72 not only human life but animals is, it's very high. 00:12:06.76\00:12:11.76 The respect for other people is very high. 00:12:11.79\00:12:14.26 The respect for children, for elders, for parents, 00:12:14.30\00:12:18.30 it's very high. 00:12:18.33\00:12:20.00 I wonder if in many ways sometimes our Christian culture 00:12:20.04\00:12:25.57 has lost some of this most important aspect of life, 00:12:25.61\00:12:30.25 respect for other, respect for life, 00:12:30.28\00:12:32.48 for parents, for elders, for animals. 00:12:32.51\00:12:38.12 I would say, God can teach us 00:12:38.15\00:12:41.39 through many different ways 00:12:41.42\00:12:44.03 and very different cultures and even religions. 00:12:44.06\00:12:48.33 So we're learning. We are on journey to learn. 00:12:48.36\00:12:52.27 And before we can teach, we have to learn. 00:12:52.30\00:12:55.07 Thank you, Dad. 00:12:55.10\00:12:56.44 It was fun being a missionary kid here in Thailand. 00:12:56.47\00:12:59.21 Stay with us. 00:12:59.24\00:13:00.58 Mission 360° will continue after the break. 00:13:00.61\00:13:02.84
