I'm continuing my conversation with Dr. And Mrs. Ng 00:00:05.53\00:00:08.20 here in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. 00:00:08.24\00:00:10.51 And on our left here, we have a hotel the Cambodiana, 00:00:10.54\00:00:13.48 I think that's what it's called. 00:00:13.51\00:00:14.84 Yes. 00:00:14.88\00:00:16.21 Tell me a little bit about your experience 00:00:16.24\00:00:17.58 with this building? 00:00:17.61\00:00:18.95 When we were in Phnom Penh, 1973, '74, '75, 00:00:18.98\00:00:24.45 this hotel was already in existence, 00:00:24.49\00:00:26.76 but it was only half-finished. 00:00:26.79\00:00:28.12 Okay. 00:00:28.16\00:00:29.49 And, at that time 00:00:29.52\00:00:31.53 there was a huge influx of refugees 00:00:31.56\00:00:33.96 coming from the countryside 00:00:34.00\00:00:35.56 because of incessant rocket attack 00:00:35.60\00:00:38.23 from the countryside to the city itself. 00:00:38.27\00:00:41.80 So hundreds and thousands of refugees 00:00:41.84\00:00:44.34 flocked into the city, 00:00:44.37\00:00:45.84 they were hungry, they were hurting. 00:00:45.87\00:00:47.88 So some of them were housed in this hotel, 00:00:47.91\00:00:50.31 this very hotel. 00:00:50.35\00:00:53.31 We did a lot of refugee relief work. 00:00:53.35\00:00:56.08 So many of us went from room to room 00:00:56.12\00:00:59.69 to help with the refugees. 00:00:59.72\00:01:01.86 And we saw those poor people in a dark room, 00:01:01.89\00:01:07.83 dingy looking, mother, children, 00:01:07.86\00:01:12.83 cooking a meal on the floor. 00:01:12.87\00:01:15.17 You know, the entire room was filled with smoke, 00:01:15.20\00:01:18.27 charcoal smoke. 00:01:18.31\00:01:19.77 And it was a pathetic scene, 00:01:19.81\00:01:22.11 but everyday almost we did a lot of refugee relief, 00:01:22.14\00:01:25.31 distributing clothing, 00:01:25.35\00:01:27.38 and rice and salt 00:01:27.42\00:01:30.42 and fish from Mekong River. 00:01:30.45\00:01:33.05 Okay. 00:01:33.09\00:01:34.42 Well, so when you were here, 00:01:34.46\00:01:36.32 you experienced rocket fire 00:01:36.36\00:01:39.69 and tell me, did you experience any providential care 00:01:39.73\00:01:43.57 while you were here? 00:01:43.60\00:01:44.93 Rocket attack was a daily occurrence. 00:01:44.97\00:01:46.77 Okay. 00:01:46.80\00:01:48.50 We have learned how to respond to rocket attack. 00:01:48.54\00:01:53.07 Okay. 00:01:53.11\00:01:54.44 When this... And B52, right? 00:01:54.48\00:01:55.84 And B52, which we'll talk about it later. 00:01:55.88\00:01:59.18 When rockers went over head, it will make a whistling sound. 00:01:59.21\00:02:02.88 So when you hear 00:02:02.92\00:02:04.25 the whistling sound of rockets going over head, 00:02:04.29\00:02:07.32 it means you are safe. 00:02:07.36\00:02:08.69 Okay. 00:02:08.72\00:02:10.06 You are still alive. We're still alive . 00:02:10.09\00:02:12.06 The problem is when you don't hear it, 00:02:12.09\00:02:16.20 because when you don't hear you are the targets, 00:02:16.23\00:02:18.73 you wouldn't know anything about it. 00:02:18.77\00:02:20.50 Right. 00:02:20.54\00:02:21.87 So upon hearing the whistling sound, 00:02:21.90\00:02:23.91 immediately we'll hit the floor. 00:02:23.94\00:02:26.17 And so the favorite place in our house in our apartment 00:02:26.21\00:02:29.98 will be the bathroom 00:02:30.01\00:02:31.38 because it was reinforced with retiller and so when, 00:02:31.41\00:02:36.69 so we thought that was the safest place 00:02:36.72\00:02:39.29 to be in a rocket attack. 00:02:39.32\00:02:42.62 And then we had many experiences 00:02:42.66\00:02:44.86 how the Lord worked overtime to protect us. 00:02:44.89\00:02:48.56 My wife was a treasurer of the Kamrieng district. 00:02:48.60\00:02:52.70 And every week she will go to the bank 00:02:52.73\00:02:55.47 to deposit the money offerings and tithes. 00:02:55.50\00:02:58.94 And one time she went with a student missionary, 00:02:58.97\00:03:03.21 you know, who accompany her to the bank. 00:03:03.24\00:03:06.35 And, when he was inside the bank, 00:03:06.38\00:03:10.79 there was a rocket attack. 00:03:10.82\00:03:13.12 When he came up from the bank ready to retrieve his bicycle. 00:03:13.15\00:03:16.99 He noticed one of his handle was cut off by a strap there, 00:03:17.03\00:03:22.76 he was safe and sound. 00:03:22.80\00:03:24.63 A lot of commotion outside, 00:03:24.67\00:03:27.50 but the bicycle was okay minus one handle, 00:03:27.54\00:03:31.14 but he was safe. 00:03:31.17\00:03:32.51 Wow. So we just thank God for that. 00:03:32.54\00:03:34.41 Mrs. Ng, when you were finally evacuated out of Phnom Pehn, 00:03:34.44\00:03:38.18 you went out to the airport. 00:03:38.21\00:03:39.55 What happened? 00:03:39.58\00:03:40.92 I was with him, you know, going to the airport, right? 00:03:43.39\00:03:46.96 Yes. Yeah. 00:03:46.99\00:03:48.32 Then while we were at the airport, 00:03:48.36\00:03:51.09 we had to hide ourselves in a bunker 00:03:51.13\00:03:55.80 because the airport had been a constant attack 00:03:55.83\00:04:00.70 from the enemy, 00:04:00.74\00:04:02.07 because if they could take the airport, 00:04:02.10\00:04:03.44 they could take the country. 00:04:03.47\00:04:05.14 And so from one bunker, 00:04:05.17\00:04:07.18 we would run to the next bunker, 00:04:07.21\00:04:09.61 just next to the runway. 00:04:09.64\00:04:11.81 And finally, 00:04:11.85\00:04:13.18 we make the last dash to the plane itself. 00:04:13.21\00:04:16.22 Then upon entering the plane, 00:04:16.25\00:04:18.05 they quickly closed the door 00:04:18.09\00:04:19.59 and they started the engine 00:04:19.62\00:04:21.12 and the plane made a very tight loop 00:04:21.16\00:04:25.59 around the airport, going up 00:04:25.63\00:04:29.40 and we just thank God 00:04:29.43\00:04:31.20 we safely arrive in Bangkok as a result. 00:04:31.23\00:04:33.57 Wow. Yeah. 00:04:33.60\00:04:34.94 So when you look back at your time here, 00:04:34.97\00:04:39.14 what lessons did you learn as young missionaries? 00:04:39.17\00:04:42.38 Well, never question God, 00:04:42.41\00:04:45.71 why things happen the way they did with us. 00:04:45.75\00:04:49.55 God asked us to trust Him 00:04:49.58\00:04:51.62 and not always 00:04:51.65\00:04:52.99 because we are not able to understand 00:04:53.02\00:04:56.02 why things happen the way they did. 00:04:56.06\00:05:00.10 That's one lesson we learned. 00:05:00.13\00:05:02.06 Lesson number two is that we learn to trust God 00:05:02.10\00:05:06.60 for the future of His work. 00:05:06.63\00:05:08.10 We had 33 members when we left. 00:05:08.14\00:05:11.81 So we thought 00:05:11.84\00:05:13.64 the congregation will be scattered 00:05:13.68\00:05:19.65 because of the war. 00:05:19.68\00:05:21.35 But little did we know that years later, 00:05:21.38\00:05:24.09 many of the tens of thousands of refugees 00:05:24.12\00:05:26.99 streaming across from Cambodia to Vietnam, to Thailand, 00:05:27.02\00:05:31.16 they receive the gospel message through the refugee ministry. 00:05:31.19\00:05:37.30 So a church was established 00:05:37.33\00:05:39.27 through the ministry of many other, 00:05:39.30\00:05:43.14 dedicated Seventh-day Adventist organizations. 00:05:43.17\00:05:46.21 So our church today is strong and on, from 14, 00:05:46.24\00:05:51.01 we have a mission office, we have a school. 00:05:51.05\00:05:54.52 K to 12, 00:05:54.55\00:05:55.88 K to 12 doing very well. 00:05:55.92\00:05:58.29 So we just praise God 00:05:58.32\00:05:59.89 for being in control of His work 00:05:59.92\00:06:01.89 even though everything around you 00:06:01.92\00:06:04.19 may seem to be falling apart. 00:06:04.23\00:06:06.26 Wonderful. 00:06:06.29\00:06:07.63 Dr. and Mrs. Ng, thank you so much 00:06:07.66\00:06:09.00 for sharing with us today. 00:06:09.03\00:06:10.37 It's our pleasure. 00:06:10.40\00:06:11.73 And viewers at home, 00:06:11.77\00:06:13.13 please pray for the church here in Cambodia 00:06:13.17\00:06:16.00 and pray for all of the 10/40 Window 00:06:16.04\00:06:18.51 where 60% of the world's population lives. 00:06:18.54\00:06:21.21 Most of whom 00:06:21.24\00:06:22.58 have still never even heard the name of Jesus. 00:06:22.61\00:06:24.91 Next up, we travel to Africa 00:06:24.95\00:06:26.65 and we visit some Portuguese islands 00:06:26.68\00:06:28.88 just off the coast from Gabon. 00:06:28.92\00:06:33.42 Something went terribly wrong 00:06:33.46\00:06:35.19 as Vitalina prepared to give birth 00:06:35.22\00:06:36.86 to her second child 00:06:36.89\00:06:38.23 in Sao Tome and Principe, 00:06:38.26\00:06:39.96 a tiny island nation off the coast of West Africa. 00:06:40.00\00:06:43.37 She began to bleed heavily, 00:06:43.40\00:06:44.87 and the doctors mistakenly gave her 00:06:44.90\00:06:46.47 the wrong type of blood during a blood transfusion. 00:06:46.50\00:06:49.64 The baby was born safely, 00:06:49.67\00:06:51.04 but Vitalina suffered a severe infection in her legs. 00:06:51.07\00:06:54.28 To save her life 00:06:54.31\00:06:55.64 the doctors amputated both legs. 00:06:55.68\00:06:57.78 Vitalina was just 19 years old. 00:06:57.81\00:07:00.92 After this tragedy, 00:07:00.95\00:07:02.28 Vitalina husband left her for another woman. 00:07:02.32\00:07:04.65 Depression overwhelmed her and she considered suicide. 00:07:04.69\00:07:08.92 I felt a lot of pain and I asked God, 00:07:12.73\00:07:16.23 "Let me die. Please kill me, God, 00:07:16.26\00:07:18.30 because I cannot live with this pain." 00:07:18.33\00:07:20.84 But God had a purpose, a plan for me. 00:07:25.61\00:07:29.08 So He allowed me to live. 00:07:29.11\00:07:30.78 Vitalina worked hard not to burden her family. 00:07:36.82\00:07:39.85 She sewed to pay the bills 00:07:39.89\00:07:41.42 and the people who assisted her 00:07:41.46\00:07:42.86 with house chores she couldn't do. 00:07:42.89\00:07:45.26 After some time, 00:07:45.29\00:07:46.63 a Seventh-day Adventist woman 00:07:46.66\00:07:48.06 who washed Vitalina's clothes got sick. 00:07:48.10\00:07:51.73 I wanted to find another person, 00:07:51.77\00:07:53.54 but the woman said, 00:07:53.57\00:07:55.20 "Don't worry, I'm going to ask church members 00:07:55.24\00:07:57.71 to come wash your clothes." 00:07:57.74\00:08:00.18 At that time, I wasn't an Adventist, 00:08:00.21\00:08:02.38 so I told her not to do it, but she didn't listen. 00:08:02.41\00:08:06.01 She asked people at church 00:08:06.05\00:08:07.45 and they came and washed some of my clothes. 00:08:07.48\00:08:10.19 When a group of Adventist girls arrived at Vitalina's home 00:08:14.42\00:08:17.03 to help with washing clothes. 00:08:17.06\00:08:18.83 She only gave them some of her clothes 00:08:18.86\00:08:21.00 and told them that was all, 00:08:21.03\00:08:22.70 but eager to help 00:08:22.73\00:08:24.07 the girls decided to look through the house 00:08:24.10\00:08:25.43 for more items to clean. 00:08:25.47\00:08:27.44 Then they took her clothes to the river 00:08:27.47\00:08:29.10 and sang as they washed. 00:08:29.14\00:08:31.84 They washed and washed. 00:08:31.87\00:08:33.54 And then they invited me to an evangelistic meeting. 00:08:33.58\00:08:37.35 I attended it and decided to accept Jesus. 00:08:37.38\00:08:42.95 After her baptism, 00:08:42.98\00:08:44.32 Vitalina was eager to share her new faith. 00:08:44.35\00:08:47.02 She told her personal testimony to everyone who would listen. 00:08:47.06\00:08:50.19 Look at me, she told people who stopped by her home. 00:08:50.23\00:08:52.86 God is working in me and I'm able to work. 00:08:52.89\00:08:55.96 God is wonderful. 00:08:56.00\00:08:57.47 And you need to trust Him. 00:08:57.50\00:08:59.53 Through her witnessing, 00:08:59.57\00:09:00.90 Vitalina convinced seven people to go with her 00:09:00.94\00:09:03.14 to the closest Adventist Church. 00:09:03.17\00:09:05.37 She even paid their bus fare for weeks. 00:09:05.41\00:09:08.34 All seven people are now baptized members 00:09:08.38\00:09:11.05 of the Adventist Church. 00:09:11.08\00:09:13.78 Vitalina also organized a Bible study group 00:09:13.82\00:09:15.98 outside her home 00:09:16.02\00:09:17.35 and six more people were baptized. 00:09:17.39\00:09:19.65 Soon she led 40 people to baptism, 00:09:19.69\00:09:22.19 including two of her children. 00:09:22.22\00:09:24.76 Church leaders began drafting plans 00:09:24.79\00:09:26.86 to open a church in her neighborhood. 00:09:26.90\00:09:29.30 Lacking funds to buy land, 00:09:29.33\00:09:31.07 the church accepted an offer from Vitalina 00:09:31.10\00:09:33.50 to build a temporary structure outside her house. 00:09:33.54\00:09:36.87 I used to go to the closest Adventist Church, 00:09:36.91\00:09:39.34 but it was still far. 00:09:39.37\00:09:42.88 Now I feel happy about this. 00:09:42.91\00:09:45.31 I feel content because it's much closer now. 00:09:45.35\00:09:49.15 It was expensive to visit there. 00:09:49.18\00:09:51.05 And I needed people to take me there 00:09:51.09\00:09:52.69 because I couldn't go alone. 00:09:52.72\00:09:56.42 This humble church is made of people 00:09:56.46\00:09:58.59 who are on fire for mission. 00:09:58.63\00:10:01.13 After the Sabbath service each week, 00:10:01.16\00:10:03.10 they go out the door singing and shaking each other's hands. 00:10:03.13\00:10:06.40 As Vitalina shakes each hand, 00:10:06.43\00:10:08.20 she is reminded that 00:10:08.24\00:10:09.57 God will one day give us victory 00:10:09.60\00:10:11.67 over everything that leaves us helpless. 00:10:11.71\00:10:15.58 I pray for this community 00:10:15.61\00:10:17.15 that we may win them for Christ. 00:10:17.18\00:10:19.38 There are still a lot of people here 00:10:19.41\00:10:21.25 who need Christ. 00:10:21.28\00:10:23.02 This is my mission. 00:10:23.05\00:10:24.62 Well, thanks so much 00:10:40.07\00:10:41.40 for joining us on today's program. 00:10:41.44\00:10:43.27 And I hope that you've enjoyed our 360 degree view of mission 00:10:43.30\00:10:46.68 around the world 00:10:46.71\00:10:48.18 that you've seen on today's program. 00:10:48.21\00:10:50.01 We have wonderful mission activities taking place 00:10:50.05\00:10:53.01 in various parts of the world. 00:10:53.05\00:10:54.48 And we may speak different languages. 00:10:54.52\00:10:56.55 We may come from totally different cultural backgrounds. 00:10:56.58\00:10:59.19 We may even look different, 00:10:59.22\00:11:00.86 but we are all sons and daughters of God. 00:11:00.89\00:11:02.82 And we have been given a commission
