Missionaries help improve a university in Mozambique, 00:00:18.18\00:00:21.68 a woman who lost two legs becomes a church planter, 00:00:21.72\00:00:25.15 and the story of two pioneer missionaries 00:00:25.19\00:00:27.29 in Cambodia 00:00:27.32\00:00:28.66 coming up next. 00:00:28.69\00:00:30.03 Hello and welcome to Mission 360. 00:01:01.02\00:01:02.79 I'm Gary Krause. 00:01:02.82\00:01:04.26 Today's program is coming to you 00:01:04.29\00:01:05.89 from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 00:01:05.93\00:01:08.66 and I'm actually standing in a museum here 00:01:08.70\00:01:11.27 in Phnom Penh 00:01:11.30\00:01:12.63 that records documents 00:01:12.67\00:01:14.54 a very dark chapter in Cambodia's history. 00:01:14.57\00:01:18.47 That was the period of the Cambodian genocide 00:01:18.51\00:01:21.61 in between 1975 and 1979. 00:01:21.64\00:01:25.68 Different estimates, 00:01:25.71\00:01:27.05 but probably some 1.7 million people were killed 00:01:27.08\00:01:31.19 during that time. 00:01:31.22\00:01:32.55 And as you walk through this museum, 00:01:32.59\00:01:34.59 you go into the cells where people were detained. 00:01:34.62\00:01:37.83 Some of the thousands of photos of the Khmer Rouge 00:01:37.86\00:01:40.93 took of their victims are on display. 00:01:40.96\00:01:42.96 And as you look into the eyes of these people, 00:01:43.00\00:01:46.30 older people, young people, children, 00:01:46.33\00:01:49.30 it's just a record 00:01:49.34\00:01:50.97 of how dark the human soul can be 00:01:51.01\00:01:54.61 without the love of Jesus in dictating, 00:01:54.64\00:01:58.35 directing people's lives. 00:01:58.38\00:02:00.45 And that dark chapter is now 00:02:00.48\00:02:02.98 something that is in the distant past 00:02:03.02\00:02:04.59 in terms of young people today. 00:02:04.62\00:02:06.69 They weren't part of it, 00:02:06.72\00:02:08.06 but it's a history that cannot be forgotten. 00:02:08.09\00:02:11.69 And today we'll be talking more about 00:02:11.73\00:02:13.96 what has happened here in Cambodia. 00:02:14.00\00:02:15.36 We'll be talking about mission in Cambodia. 00:02:15.40\00:02:17.07 We'll be talking to Dr. and Mrs. Ng 00:02:17.10\00:02:19.50 who are missionaries here 00:02:19.53\00:02:20.87 and left about three weeks 00:02:20.90\00:02:22.24 before the Khmer Rouge took power. 00:02:22.27\00:02:23.97 First up, 00:02:24.01\00:02:25.34 let's meet some missionaries in Mozambique, Africa. 00:02:25.37\00:02:27.74 We are in front of Adventist University of Mozambique, 00:02:32.21\00:02:36.28 which is located Beira, 00:02:36.32\00:02:37.85 which is near the center of the country 00:02:37.89\00:02:40.39 and right of the sea. 00:02:40.42\00:02:41.89 The story of how we arrived in here 00:02:41.92\00:02:44.16 is interesting. 00:02:44.19\00:02:45.53 I was a geology professor in pharma, 00:02:45.56\00:02:48.26 the Adventist University of the Amazon 00:02:48.30\00:02:51.40 near Belem, Brazil. 00:02:51.43\00:02:53.20 Malu my wife was the educational coordinator 00:02:53.23\00:02:56.40 in the same institution. 00:02:56.44\00:02:57.91 We were very comfortable, 00:02:57.94\00:02:59.97 but then I received an email 00:03:00.01\00:03:02.21 inviting me to teach 00:03:02.24\00:03:03.91 at the Adventist University of Mozambique. 00:03:03.95\00:03:06.92 I was uncertain at first, 00:03:06.95\00:03:09.05 I had never thought about overseas mission. 00:03:09.08\00:03:12.65 What would it be like? 00:03:12.69\00:03:14.16 How would my family adjust? 00:03:14.19\00:03:16.86 Many things went through my mind, 00:03:16.89\00:03:19.09 but I had to share the news with my wife first. 00:03:19.13\00:03:22.86 When he told me about the email I responded, 00:03:22.90\00:03:25.13 "Really? Let's go. Let's go right away." 00:03:25.17\00:03:28.60 Malu's response caught Dr. Heraldo by surprise. 00:03:28.64\00:03:32.27 Part of him hoped 00:03:32.31\00:03:33.64 she would turn down the invitation, 00:03:33.68\00:03:35.41 but when she immediately accepted it, 00:03:35.44\00:03:37.41 he saw it as God's approval to go. 00:03:37.45\00:03:40.35 When they arrived, 00:03:40.38\00:03:41.72 the university campus was in decay 00:03:41.75\00:03:43.49 and the students and staff lacked 00:03:43.52\00:03:45.35 the most basic necessities like food. 00:03:45.39\00:03:48.86 This is a charcoal oven. 00:03:48.89\00:03:51.23 You put the charcoal below and the pan on top. 00:03:51.26\00:03:54.63 It is a typical oven in this nation. 00:03:54.66\00:03:57.53 One day I found a school worker cooking rice in a small pan 00:03:57.57\00:04:01.94 with a bit of cabbage on top. 00:04:01.97\00:04:04.11 I asked him 00:04:04.14\00:04:05.47 if that was his only meal for the day, 00:04:05.51\00:04:08.38 the man said, 00:04:08.41\00:04:09.74 "Yes, this is my only meal today." 00:04:09.78\00:04:12.78 So I asked him 00:04:12.81\00:04:14.15 if that was going to be enough to feed him. 00:04:14.18\00:04:16.69 And he said, 00:04:16.72\00:04:18.05 "Oh, no, this is not just for me. 00:04:18.09\00:04:20.66 It's for me and two other people. 00:04:20.69\00:04:23.63 Dr. Heraldo returned to his office in tears. 00:04:23.66\00:04:26.36 He and my Malu knew 00:04:26.39\00:04:27.73 the students couldn't study and learn on empty stomachs. 00:04:27.76\00:04:30.67 So they prayed together for God to provide. 00:04:30.70\00:04:33.64 He answered their prayer through a missionary 00:04:33.67\00:04:35.54 who donated funds to start a cafeteria. 00:04:35.57\00:04:38.04 Now the university serves daily meals 00:04:38.07\00:04:40.08 to students and staff. 00:04:40.11\00:04:41.44 Many other positive changes are happening 00:04:52.55\00:04:54.42 at the Adventist University of Mozambique. 00:04:54.46\00:04:57.03 New school buildings 00:04:57.06\00:04:58.39 and fields of study have been added. 00:04:58.43\00:04:59.93 And the student body has doubled in two years. 00:04:59.96\00:05:03.10 The campus church was dilapidated 00:05:03.13\00:05:04.93 and the roof leaked when it rained. 00:05:04.97\00:05:06.74 But now it has been renovated. 00:05:06.77\00:05:09.40 A new library was built and books were donated 00:05:09.44\00:05:12.34 and the university has now received 00:05:12.37\00:05:14.04 the highest level of accreditation 00:05:14.08\00:05:15.54 in Mozambique. 00:05:15.58\00:05:17.05 The faculty has also developed a mission institute 00:05:17.08\00:05:19.71 to equip students for mission and action. 00:05:19.75\00:05:23.12 After lunch on Sabbath, 00:05:23.15\00:05:24.59 the students come here to receive training. 00:05:24.62\00:05:27.06 Then they are divided into groups 00:05:27.09\00:05:29.79 to visit children, elderly, 00:05:29.82\00:05:32.53 former member of the Adventist Church 00:05:32.56\00:05:35.26 and the sick 00:05:35.30\00:05:36.63 given Bible studies as they go. 00:05:36.67\00:05:39.73 Visiting the surrounding area has greatly impacted both 00:05:39.77\00:05:44.27 the community and the lives of the students. 00:05:44.31\00:05:47.41 Some people we reach out to have already accepted Jesus 00:05:47.44\00:05:51.91 and were baptized. 00:05:51.95\00:05:53.75 In the previous year alone, 00:05:53.78\00:05:55.18 this program has strengthened the faith of many 00:05:55.22\00:05:57.55 even resulting in 17 baptisms. 00:05:57.59\00:05:59.95 And the excitement for mission continues to grow. 00:05:59.99\00:06:02.52 We aim to develop 00:06:02.56\00:06:04.16 a fully mission minded university 00:06:04.19\00:06:06.73 that prepares student 00:06:06.76\00:06:08.33 to fulfill God's mission for us. 00:06:08.36\00:06:12.23 God can use us even in simple ways. 00:06:12.27\00:06:15.57 God has used us 00:06:15.60\00:06:17.14 and we feel like we're making a difference here. 00:06:17.17\00:06:20.11 But there are still many challenges ahead. 00:06:20.14\00:06:22.11 Students and staff 00:06:22.14\00:06:23.48 at the Adventist University of Mozambique 00:06:23.51\00:06:25.18 now pray for funds 00:06:25.21\00:06:26.58 to expand the food and nutrition department 00:06:26.61\00:06:28.95 with a hands-on learning environment. 00:06:28.98\00:06:31.05 Their goal is to hold health expos, 00:06:31.09\00:06:33.09 so they can share the health message 00:06:33.12\00:06:34.62 with the community. 00:06:34.66\00:06:36.16 Please pray for cross-cultural missionaries 00:06:36.19\00:06:38.29 like Dr. Heraldo and Malu 00:06:38.33\00:06:40.63 who are serving in remote parts of the world. 00:06:40.66\00:06:43.03 Pray also for the goals 00:06:43.06\00:06:44.40 of the Adventist University of Mozambique. 00:06:44.43\00:06:46.77 And thank you for your support of Adventist Mission. 00:06:46.80\00:06:51.67 My guests are Dr. and Mrs. Ng. 00:06:51.71\00:06:53.44 And Dr. Ng is my boss, 00:06:53.48\00:06:55.21 and he's the secretary for the General Conference 00:06:55.24\00:06:57.85 of Seventh-day Adventists. 00:06:57.88\00:06:59.31 And Mrs. Ng works 00:06:59.35\00:07:00.68 for the Hope Channel International. 00:07:00.72\00:07:02.78 And thanks for joining us. 00:07:02.82\00:07:04.15 Now, for you, this is bit of sweet memories 00:07:04.19\00:07:07.39 coming back to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. 00:07:07.42\00:07:10.29 How does it feel like 00:07:10.33\00:07:11.66 to come back after all these years, Mrs. Ng? 00:07:11.69\00:07:14.13 This is the first time since we left in 1975 00:07:14.16\00:07:19.53 and I really feel so excited to come back, 00:07:19.57\00:07:22.84 you know, after so many years, 00:07:22.87\00:07:25.17 40 some years. Yeah. 00:07:25.21\00:07:26.64 And you came here as young missionaries from? 00:07:26.68\00:07:29.38 Yes. 00:07:29.41\00:07:30.75 We just finished our graduation 00:07:30.78\00:07:34.25 in November, 1972. 00:07:34.28\00:07:38.32 In Singapore. In Singapore. 00:07:38.35\00:07:39.69 And before graduating 00:07:39.72\00:07:42.12 the Southeast Asia Union 00:07:42.16\00:07:44.39 had already assigned us to go to Cambodia. 00:07:44.43\00:07:46.80 At that time, 00:07:46.83\00:07:48.16 the president of the union was Ralph Vas Jr. 00:07:48.20\00:07:52.93 When we first went to Cambodia, 00:07:52.97\00:07:54.97 we thought we must have done something wrong. 00:07:55.00\00:07:58.44 This is a punishment, 00:07:58.47\00:08:01.18 but a perceived punishment 00:08:01.21\00:08:04.35 turned out to be a great blessing to us, 00:08:04.38\00:08:06.55 you know, an experience we will not, 00:08:06.58\00:08:12.69 will not exchange for anything else. 00:08:12.72\00:08:14.92 Now you were trained as a pastor, right? 00:08:14.96\00:08:16.42 Yes. 00:08:16.46\00:08:17.79 And now they've trained you how to be a missionary? 00:08:17.83\00:08:20.46 Not really. 00:08:20.50\00:08:21.83 The curriculum 00:08:21.86\00:08:23.20 did not really cover a mission service, 00:08:23.23\00:08:25.97 mission training, 00:08:26.00\00:08:27.34 cross-cultural training as such. 00:08:27.37\00:08:29.44 In fact, the mission component was rather meeker. 00:08:29.47\00:08:34.48 Mission was not as emphasized as it should be, 00:08:34.51\00:08:39.95 you know, and we were brand new. 00:08:39.98\00:08:42.18 We did not know 00:08:42.22\00:08:43.55 what mission service was all about. 00:08:43.59\00:08:45.15 We were not IDE missionary or international employee, 00:08:45.19\00:08:51.39 missionaries send from the General Conference. 00:08:51.43\00:08:55.53 We were just interim missionary within a far Eastern division. 00:08:55.56\00:09:00.57 And we went there without mission institute, 00:09:00.60\00:09:03.37 without adequate training, without anyone instructing us, 00:09:03.41\00:09:07.28 what mission service was all about. 00:09:07.31\00:09:10.31 And I think, 00:09:10.35\00:09:11.98 for example, a group of people from the union 00:09:12.01\00:09:15.18 and from the church sent us off at the airport in Singapore. 00:09:15.22\00:09:19.25 You know, they were so happy to see off, 00:09:19.29\00:09:21.79 see us off only to find out 00:09:21.82\00:09:23.59 we did not have visa to go to the country. 00:09:23.63\00:09:25.49 A mere technicality. 00:09:25.53\00:09:27.56 And so we had to return to the school 00:09:27.60\00:09:33.34 where we were located 00:09:33.37\00:09:35.07 and a week or two later we applied visa. 00:09:35.10\00:09:37.61 Then off, we went again. 00:09:37.64\00:09:39.27 And, of course, this time, 00:09:39.31\00:09:40.81 the well-wishers were much fewer 00:09:40.84\00:09:44.35 than what it was before. 00:09:44.38\00:09:47.32 So the standard of living in Singapore was very different 00:09:47.35\00:09:50.35 to what you encountered when you came here? 00:09:50.39\00:09:51.72 What was it like when you arrived here? 00:09:51.75\00:09:53.46 How did you feel? 00:09:53.49\00:09:56.09 It was not too bad, 00:09:56.12\00:09:57.46 you know, we were young and ready to do some venturing. 00:09:57.49\00:10:02.23 Yes. Yeah. 00:10:02.26\00:10:04.43 The student missionaries told to us, 00:10:04.47\00:10:06.63 they say, we are preparing your honeymoon suite for you. 00:10:06.67\00:10:10.81 And honeymoon suite turned out to be an empty nest, 00:10:10.84\00:10:13.88 empty apartment, 00:10:13.91\00:10:15.28 but they were very kind, 00:10:15.31\00:10:16.64 they painted the whole apartment 00:10:16.68\00:10:18.08 in the Russian Information Center 00:10:18.11\00:10:20.35 on the top floor of a four-story building. 00:10:20.38\00:10:23.72 So we were very grateful for their warm welcome, 00:10:23.75\00:10:28.96 but it was a stark contrast to what life was in Singapore. 00:10:28.99\00:10:33.80 You know, we were spoiled 00:10:33.83\00:10:35.70 with all the conveniences in Singapore. 00:10:35.73\00:10:39.13 And Cambodia being a foreign country, 00:10:39.17\00:10:43.64 we did not quite know how to behave, 00:10:43.67\00:10:47.48 you know, and how to relate to people. 00:10:47.51\00:10:51.45 And the first assignment given by the union 00:10:51.48\00:10:54.85 was to study the Khmer language. 00:10:54.88\00:10:57.12 So this was an area where we make a lot of errors. 00:10:57.15\00:11:01.32 We had no language preparation whatsoever. 00:11:01.36\00:11:04.83 And so we merely hire elementary school teacher 00:11:04.86\00:11:10.43 to teach us Khmer. 00:11:10.47\00:11:12.73 And of course, 00:11:12.77\00:11:14.10 elementary school teacher did what he used to do. 00:11:14.14\00:11:18.61 And that is to use grade one textbook. 00:11:18.64\00:11:24.15 Memorize all the consonants and alphabets 00:11:24.18\00:11:27.55 of the Cambodian language, 00:11:27.58\00:11:29.48 which had its roots in Sanskrit. 00:11:29.52\00:11:33.05 You know, so it's extremely complicated language. 00:11:33.09\00:11:37.49 And so we memorize all, a lot of words, 00:11:37.53\00:11:41.76 memorize a lot of sentences, but we couldn't put them to use 00:11:41.80\00:11:46.84 because we could not communicate 00:11:46.87\00:11:49.80 when we went marketing and so on. 00:11:49.84\00:11:52.31 Only to find out later that 00:11:52.34\00:11:55.84 that was not the best way to study language. 00:11:55.88\00:11:58.58 And it was only months later, we discovered by chance, 00:11:58.61\00:12:03.62 a textbook published 00:12:03.65\00:12:05.72 by the State Department of the United States government 00:12:05.75\00:12:08.66 in which they train missionaries 00:12:08.69\00:12:11.33 within a short period of time, like three months 00:12:11.36\00:12:14.20 to speak the Khmer language 00:12:14.23\00:12:15.83 emphasizing only on conversation 00:12:15.86\00:12:19.07 and not on the vocabulary. 00:12:19.10\00:12:21.34 The aim was to build up your confidence, 00:12:21.37\00:12:23.10 to speak the language, 00:12:23.14\00:12:24.47 to be able to communicate with people, you know. 00:12:24.51\00:12:27.21 After that you learn the consonants, 00:12:27.24\00:12:29.18 the alphabets, the vocabulary and so on. 00:12:29.21\00:12:33.31 So we began to make headway after that. 00:12:33.35\00:12:35.65 Yeah. 00:12:35.68\00:12:37.02 How, how many church members were there 00:12:37.05\00:12:38.39 when you came? 00:12:38.42\00:12:40.26 There were very few of them, probably 17, 18 of them, 00:12:40.29\00:12:45.33 but we have good attendance. 00:12:45.36\00:12:47.30 Every Sabbath, 00:12:47.33\00:12:48.66 most of them came from the language school itself, 00:12:48.70\00:12:52.13 students from language school. 00:12:52.17\00:12:53.67 They relished coming to Sabbath school 00:12:53.70\00:12:56.20 and worship service 00:12:56.24\00:12:57.57 because they receive free English tuition, 00:12:57.61\00:13:00.91 so to speak. 00:13:00.94\00:13:02.78 So they got to practice their English. 00:13:02.81\00:13:06.21 They got to listen to English lectures. 00:13:06.25\00:13:10.25 And so the attendance was always good. 00:13:10.29\00:13:13.19 The chapel was always full. 00:13:13.22\00:13:15.66 Even Sabbath afternoon we had what we call the story hour, 00:13:15.69\00:13:20.23 making use of the 10 volume, 00:13:20.26\00:13:22.70 a Bible story written by Arthur Maxwell. 00:13:22.73\00:13:26.20 And that's where we got a lot of converts. 00:13:26.23\00:13:30.27 And so every few months we will have baptisms. 00:13:30.31\00:13:34.84 So when we had baptisms, 00:13:34.88\00:13:36.21 we had to go to the church by the presidential palace. 00:13:36.24\00:13:42.52 The baptistery was there 00:13:42.55\00:13:44.45 and it was a time of great rejoicing 00:13:44.49\00:13:47.76 when, before we left, we had 33 members. 00:13:47.79\00:13:50.79 Wonderful. 00:13:50.83\00:13:52.33 Well, thank you so much for joining us. 00:13:52.36\00:13:53.80 And we're going to be talking 00:13:53.83\00:13:55.16 a little bit later in the program. 00:13:55.20\00:13:56.90 We actually here at the genocide museum, 00:13:56.93\00:13:59.67 which commemorates 00:13:59.70\00:14:01.24 a very unfortunate time in Cambodia's history, 00:14:01.27\00:14:04.64 which actually began about three weeks 00:14:04.67\00:14:06.51 after the Ng's were evacuated out of Cambodia. 00:14:06.54\00:14:09.44 But we'll talk about that some more, a bit later. 00:14:09.48\00:14:11.55
