Welcome back to the campus 00:00:06.77\00:00:08.10 of Loma Linda University Health. 00:00:08.14\00:00:10.51 Behind me, you can see the Loma Linda Medical Center 00:00:10.54\00:00:14.31 and then positioned appropriately in front of it 00:00:14.34\00:00:17.25 is this beautiful depiction 00:00:17.28\00:00:19.18 of the parable of the good Samaritan. 00:00:19.21\00:00:21.38 Next up, we meet Pastor Roy, 00:00:21.42\00:00:23.82 who is planting a church in Melbourne, Australia. 00:00:23.85\00:00:27.92 I'm here in Australia 00:00:27.96\00:00:29.29 with a young pastor who is planting a church. 00:00:29.32\00:00:32.09 And most of us would say Melbourne, 00:00:32.13\00:00:34.03 but they say Melbourne. 00:00:34.06\00:00:36.56 This is Pastor Roy. 00:00:36.60\00:00:38.37 And tell me, 00:00:38.40\00:00:39.73 how long have you been working in Melbourne? 00:00:39.77\00:00:42.04 Yeah, so I first came here in 2005 00:00:42.07\00:00:43.84 as a Bible worker 00:00:43.87\00:00:45.21 and stayed here for two years 00:00:45.24\00:00:46.94 and ended up needing to finish my studies. 00:00:46.98\00:00:49.38 And so went back to the US, finished my studies 00:00:49.41\00:00:52.41 and came here 2012 with my family 00:00:52.45\00:00:55.15 and been here ever since. 00:00:55.18\00:00:57.29 Now, I said, you're planting a church, 00:00:57.32\00:00:59.45 but what does this mean? 00:00:59.49\00:01:01.26 What are you actually doing? Yep. 00:01:01.29\00:01:03.53 So we run a church service on a Sabbath morning 00:01:03.56\00:01:07.80 from the heart of the city of Melbourne. 00:01:07.83\00:01:09.63 Our church is located on 500 Collins Street. 00:01:09.66\00:01:12.47 And then during the week we run small groups 00:01:12.50\00:01:14.20 and different outreach programs to the community. 00:01:14.24\00:01:17.41 Tell me a little bit about the city? 00:01:17.44\00:01:19.97 Yep. 00:01:20.01\00:01:21.34 Melbourne is kind of a unique place 00:01:21.38\00:01:22.71 where people would call it very secular. 00:01:22.74\00:01:25.08 And so, for example, 00:01:25.11\00:01:26.61 we have holidays for sporting events. 00:01:26.65\00:01:29.25 We've got the Melbourne Cup, it's a horse race. 00:01:29.28\00:01:31.85 Nobody goes to work 00:01:31.89\00:01:33.22 when the horse races take place. 00:01:33.25\00:01:34.62 I've never lived in a place where that takes place. 00:01:34.66\00:01:39.09 We also have holiday for the Footy Championship. 00:01:39.13\00:01:42.56 So that takes place right near the city as well. 00:01:42.60\00:01:44.83 Nobody gets... 00:01:44.87\00:01:46.20 It sounds Australian footy as well. 00:01:46.23\00:01:47.57 Yep. So it's an Australian football. 00:01:47.60\00:01:49.54 Australia, Aussie rules. 00:01:49.57\00:01:50.91 Yeah, I'm getting too used to Australia here. 00:01:50.94\00:01:52.44 So is that with the Aussie rules as well 00:01:52.47\00:01:53.81 or is it different? 00:01:53.84\00:01:55.18 Yeah. Okay. 00:01:55.21\00:01:56.54 Yeah, yeah. All right. 00:01:56.58\00:01:57.91 Now, I understand that 00:01:57.95\00:01:59.28 it's also very international city. 00:01:59.31\00:02:01.32 Do you have a lot of people 00:02:01.35\00:02:02.68 from different parts of the world, is that true? 00:02:02.72\00:02:04.19 Absolutely. 00:02:04.22\00:02:05.65 It's a bit of a hub. 00:02:05.69\00:02:07.59 It's a very diverse city. 00:02:07.62\00:02:08.96 You've got 40% of people 00:02:08.99\00:02:10.63 that probably come from Asia alone. 00:02:10.66\00:02:13.96 And there's just tremendous diversity in the city. 00:02:14.00\00:02:16.26 Now, which is larger, Sydney or Melbourne? 00:02:16.30\00:02:18.43 I hear there's a bit of a rivalry 00:02:18.47\00:02:19.93 as to which is the biggest. 00:02:19.97\00:02:21.30 So they're going to go on record. 00:02:21.34\00:02:23.54 There is a bit of a... 00:02:23.57\00:02:24.91 There's a bit of a rivalry. 00:02:24.94\00:02:26.81 Yeah, Melbourne is smaller at the moment. 00:02:26.84\00:02:28.64 And what they're projecting is within the next five years, 00:02:28.68\00:02:31.85 that Melbourne would become a little bit bigger than Sydney 00:02:31.88\00:02:34.88 in terms of population. 00:02:34.92\00:02:37.09 Now why then you were a Bible worker 00:02:37.12\00:02:39.69 and now you're working as a church planter. 00:02:39.72\00:02:41.52 What inspires you to do what you do? 00:02:41.56\00:02:44.36 I think that there are moments 00:02:44.39\00:02:46.90 where you realize God wants you to do something. 00:02:46.93\00:02:50.10 And there were experiences 00:02:50.13\00:02:51.47 that I had as a Bible worker here in Melbourne, 00:02:51.50\00:02:53.23 where I really felt like 00:02:53.27\00:02:57.14 there was, 00:02:57.17\00:02:58.51 there were moment 00:02:58.54\00:02:59.87 where people connected with Christ 00:02:59.91\00:03:01.24 in a meaningful way. 00:03:01.28\00:03:02.61 And I think there's a lot of motivation saying, 00:03:02.64\00:03:03.98 "Hey, that was great. I want to do more of that." 00:03:04.01\00:03:05.35 And so, I ended up going into ministry afterwards. 00:03:05.38\00:03:07.98 Wonderful. 00:03:08.02\00:03:09.35 Now your wife is also working with you. 00:03:09.38\00:03:11.09 So it's a family affair here. 00:03:11.12\00:03:14.12 Now, when you're talking about reaching a city, 00:03:14.16\00:03:17.03 you know, you talked about small groups 00:03:17.06\00:03:18.39 and things like that. 00:03:18.43\00:03:21.33 How do you really connect with people? 00:03:21.36\00:03:24.40 Yeah, that's a good question. 00:03:24.43\00:03:25.83 We probably connect with the people 00:03:25.87\00:03:29.30 who are Australian born from two different, 00:03:29.34\00:03:32.37 two different methods. 00:03:32.41\00:03:33.74 One is mainly a referral. 00:03:33.78\00:03:35.11 So that just means friends of friends. 00:03:35.14\00:03:38.11 They come to church, 00:03:38.15\00:03:39.48 they realize this is gonna be a great opportunity 00:03:39.51\00:03:41.42 to witness to my friends, my family members. 00:03:41.45\00:03:43.82 And so, the majority of the people 00:03:43.85\00:03:45.39 that come into our church are referral, 00:03:45.42\00:03:48.82 and then we also use social media. 00:03:48.86\00:03:50.19 So websites like Facebook or meetup.com. 00:03:50.23\00:03:53.90 There are great ways of connecting 00:03:53.93\00:03:55.26 with the community. 00:03:55.30\00:03:56.63 And so, we run different Bible study groups. 00:03:56.67\00:03:58.70 One of them are, 00:03:58.73\00:04:00.07 is located right in the middle of the city. 00:04:00.10\00:04:02.04 We run it during lunchtime. 00:04:02.07\00:04:03.41 So the advertisement is 00:04:03.44\00:04:05.07 if you're a corporate person working or living in the city, 00:04:05.11\00:04:08.28 we've got a short Bible study in the middle of Wednesday 00:04:08.31\00:04:11.88 and they can come. 00:04:11.91\00:04:13.31 Okay. 00:04:13.35\00:04:14.68 Now a lot of people know what referrals are. 00:04:14.72\00:04:16.05 Social media, yeah, it's been around a lot, 00:04:16.08\00:04:18.39 but people are figuring out how do we use it for ministry? 00:04:18.42\00:04:20.56 You specifically mentioned one, which is meetup.com. 00:04:20.59\00:04:23.69 Some people may not know what that is. 00:04:23.73\00:04:25.29 You want to just tell them how you use that. 00:04:25.33\00:04:27.63 I mean, it's something that's just out there. 00:04:27.66\00:04:29.66 It's like Facebook, it's out there. 00:04:29.70\00:04:31.97 But maybe explain a little bit about what you're doing, 00:04:32.00\00:04:34.67 how you're using it? 00:04:34.70\00:04:36.04 So meetup.com 00:04:36.07\00:04:37.41 I think is the biggest networking website 00:04:37.44\00:04:42.01 where people who want to organize groups 00:04:42.04\00:04:44.45 can connect with individuals 00:04:44.48\00:04:46.01 who are interested in specific activities 00:04:46.05\00:04:48.22 or, yeah, different social events. 00:04:48.25\00:04:51.55 And so, they go to the website, 00:04:51.59\00:04:53.09 they can sign up 00:04:53.12\00:04:54.46 and based off of the areas of interest that they select 00:04:54.49\00:04:58.63 the website will automatically introduce 00:04:58.66\00:05:00.50 your group to individuals. 00:05:00.53\00:05:01.86 And so, if someone who's running a Bible study group, 00:05:01.90\00:05:04.37 I don't have to chase after people on the street 00:05:04.40\00:05:05.73 asking them, 00:05:05.77\00:05:07.10 "Hey, do you want to learn about Jesus?" 00:05:07.14\00:05:08.50 The website will bring people 00:05:08.54\00:05:09.87 who want to learn about Jesus to my groups. 00:05:09.90\00:05:11.44 So you put out something, 00:05:11.47\00:05:12.81 say if we're having a Bible study 00:05:12.84\00:05:14.24 media group show up this time and people come? 00:05:14.28\00:05:17.08 Yeah. 00:05:17.11\00:05:18.98 We put a fair bit of time 00:05:19.01\00:05:20.35 in how we wanted to word our group. 00:05:20.38\00:05:22.85 But, yeah, so we put out an advertisement 00:05:22.88\00:05:25.05 we said, there's free food. 00:05:25.09\00:05:26.42 We'll feed you at lunchtime. 00:05:26.45\00:05:27.79 And the Bible study is going to be short. 00:05:27.82\00:05:29.16 And so, if you want to learn about the Bible, 00:05:29.19\00:05:31.99 then here are different topics that we're covering. 00:05:32.03\00:05:33.90 And so, we've covered topics like Proverbs giving you wisdom 00:05:33.93\00:05:37.53 during the work week. 00:05:37.57\00:05:38.90 And we've had a number of people 00:05:38.93\00:05:40.27 coming through that. 00:05:40.30\00:05:41.64 Physical food and spiritual food really. 00:05:41.67\00:05:43.30 That's right. 00:05:43.34\00:05:45.21 Now, do you have any stories you can share about 00:05:45.24\00:05:47.08 maybe somebody who's connected through one of these groups or? 00:05:47.11\00:05:51.08 Yeah, so there's this one instance 00:05:51.11\00:05:52.61 where we were able to bridge social media 00:05:52.65\00:05:54.68 and our friendships together. 00:05:54.72\00:05:57.29 I found out a couple of weeks ago, 00:05:57.32\00:05:58.65 our neighbors have been reading our blogs on Facebook. 00:05:58.69\00:06:02.22 And while we were at the museum the other week, 00:06:02.26\00:06:04.16 they had mentioned, 00:06:04.19\00:06:05.53 "Hey, we've been reading what you've been posting. 00:06:05.56\00:06:07.66 And we really feel like 00:06:07.70\00:06:09.03 we can connect with you spiritually. 00:06:09.06\00:06:11.13 Can we come to your church?" 00:06:11.17\00:06:12.83 And I was taken aback 00:06:12.87\00:06:14.20 because these are individuals who are unchurched. 00:06:14.24\00:06:16.64 They don't attend church regularly, 00:06:16.67\00:06:18.54 and yet because they know us, 00:06:18.57\00:06:20.71 they read the different things that we post on Facebook. 00:06:20.74\00:06:22.78 And it's been an incredible way to have a voice, 00:06:22.81\00:06:25.58 to share spiritual things 00:06:25.61\00:06:26.95 in a way that we normally couldn't do. 00:06:26.98\00:06:29.78 What's even more amazing to me is that 00:06:29.82\00:06:31.82 we've been wanting to start this outreach 00:06:31.85\00:06:33.86 in the city called Gymbaroo, 00:06:33.89\00:06:35.22 it's, where children develop physical skills, 00:06:35.26\00:06:38.99 mental and social skills. 00:06:39.03\00:06:40.80 And we just were sharing that idea with our neighbors. 00:06:40.83\00:06:44.23 And they're saying, 00:06:44.27\00:06:45.60 we want to fund this ministry for you. 00:06:45.63\00:06:47.80 And that was quite an amazing thing. 00:06:47.84\00:06:50.07 Especially because 00:06:50.11\00:06:51.51 these are not Adventist individuals, 00:06:51.54\00:06:53.68 they just connected with us, care about us, 00:06:53.71\00:06:56.04 and felt that 00:06:56.08\00:06:57.41 there was a need in the community as well. 00:06:57.45\00:06:58.78 And, you know, 00:06:58.81\00:07:00.15 when you're mingling with people, 00:07:00.18\00:07:02.25 when you are interacting in a real way with people, 00:07:02.28\00:07:07.69 not with an agenda, 00:07:07.72\00:07:09.06 that's probably the most powerful way 00:07:09.09\00:07:10.89 to witness 00:07:10.93\00:07:12.26 when your life is your witness. 00:07:12.29\00:07:14.30 And the Holy Spirit is working. 00:07:14.33\00:07:16.50 You know, Pastor Roy, 00:07:16.53\00:07:18.10 it's been wonderful talking with you. 00:07:18.13\00:07:20.27 I would love to get down and come to Melbourne someday 00:07:20.30\00:07:22.87 and see what you're doing. 00:07:22.90\00:07:24.24 Please come and visit. 00:07:24.27\00:07:25.61 But thank you again for being with us. 00:07:25.64\00:07:28.31 I'm Richard Kajiura for Mission 360. 00:07:28.34\00:07:32.85 Next up, we meet the Sherman family 00:07:32.88\00:07:34.72 who are working in a very remote region 00:07:34.75\00:07:37.55 of Northwest Alaska. 00:07:37.59\00:07:39.05 We're refurbishing the church and fixing it up 00:07:49.26\00:07:51.43 and putting lots of time and effort and money into it 00:07:51.47\00:07:55.34 because we believe that God will supply the souls, 00:07:55.37\00:07:59.61 that God will bring people 00:07:59.64\00:08:01.54 and He will open up doors 00:08:01.58\00:08:03.04 and the time will come that we will have a fellowship here. 00:08:03.08\00:08:06.01 We will have a church family. 00:08:06.05\00:08:08.65 The work needs to be done patiently 00:08:08.68\00:08:10.89 and prayers for opportunities are made every day. 00:08:10.92\00:08:14.42 Although God is guiding the Sherman's mission work, 00:08:14.46\00:08:17.89 the cold weather, difficult circumstances 00:08:17.93\00:08:21.10 and distance from loved ones are discouraging. 00:08:21.13\00:08:24.67 Sometimes my wife and I are discouraged 00:08:24.70\00:08:26.03 when we're here alone. 00:08:26.07\00:08:27.40 You know, we sometimes feel that 00:08:27.44\00:08:29.07 we're just kind of out here by ourselves 00:08:29.10\00:08:30.74 and we are attempted to feel like 00:08:30.77\00:08:33.61 we're not making the impact. 00:08:33.64\00:08:36.04 And no one is really with us. 00:08:36.08\00:08:38.55 And no one is really supporting us. 00:08:38.58\00:08:40.32 And there's been times that we felt like 00:08:40.35\00:08:42.35 it would be nice to maybe move 00:08:42.38\00:08:43.72 and join a different type of mission field 00:08:43.75\00:08:46.45 where there's people who are working together 00:08:46.49\00:08:48.16 more as a team. 00:08:48.19\00:08:49.52 I'm kind of like seeing 00:08:49.56\00:08:50.89 you know, what are my weaknesses, 00:08:50.93\00:08:52.26 you know, 00:08:52.29\00:08:53.63 and that kinda like helps me to know 00:08:53.66\00:08:55.96 at the same time, 00:08:56.00\00:08:57.33 you know, God is kinda like helping me to work with it. 00:08:57.37\00:09:00.64 I'm very impatient. 00:09:00.67\00:09:02.50 I want things to happen instantly. 00:09:02.54\00:09:05.01 If I want it to happen, I want it to happen. 00:09:05.04\00:09:07.28 But living out here, 00:09:07.31\00:09:08.84 you know, I learned that thing doesn't happen 00:09:08.88\00:09:11.85 when you want it to happen. 00:09:11.88\00:09:13.55 One thing that has always given us hope is knowing that 00:09:13.58\00:09:16.12 we're doing what God has asked us to do. 00:09:16.15\00:09:18.95 And we've had comfort in that. 00:09:18.99\00:09:20.59 To be a missionary is like 00:09:20.62\00:09:22.32 living what you have behind 00:09:22.36\00:09:24.99 and go somewhere different 00:09:25.03\00:09:27.63 and getting out of your comfort zone. 00:09:27.66\00:09:29.76 Jade! 00:09:40.61\00:09:41.94 What are you guys up to? 00:09:41.98\00:09:43.31 You know, the coldness of the water, 00:09:51.99\00:09:53.62 the coldness of the icebergs 00:09:53.66\00:09:55.62 kind of reminds me about the coldness 00:09:55.66\00:09:58.89 that can come in the heart when you feel lonely, 00:09:58.93\00:10:02.26 separated from God. 00:10:02.30\00:10:03.83 And yet the warmth of God's love 00:10:03.87\00:10:05.97 and of His people 00:10:06.00\00:10:08.20 can bring into your life a wonderful connection 00:10:08.24\00:10:11.51 that will help you not to feel alone. 00:10:11.54\00:10:15.61 The things that inspire Irene and I are, 00:10:15.64\00:10:17.95 you know, there's a few different things, 00:10:17.98\00:10:19.31 but God will oftentimes provide opportunities, 00:10:19.35\00:10:23.49 He will open doors. 00:10:23.52\00:10:24.95 He will actually cause things to happen that 00:10:24.99\00:10:27.72 that give us glimpses of what He's doing. 00:10:27.76\00:10:31.19 You know, we'll start a new study 00:10:31.23\00:10:32.89 or someone will say something to us 00:10:32.93\00:10:35.06 that gives us encouragement. 00:10:35.10\00:10:36.63 We'll see some fruit of the relationships 00:10:36.67\00:10:40.44 we're building with kids, 00:10:40.47\00:10:41.80 as well as with people in the community, 00:10:41.84\00:10:43.57 you know, God will do something to help us see that 00:10:43.61\00:10:47.08 His work is being accomplished through us. 00:10:47.11\00:10:49.38 And that we're, 00:10:49.41\00:10:50.75 and that our faithfulness is pleasing to Him. 00:10:50.78\00:10:53.38 The courage and faithfulness, 00:10:56.62\00:10:58.05 Tony and Irene have is contagious. 00:10:58.09\00:11:01.02 Their determination 00:11:01.06\00:11:02.39 to fulfill the mission is inspiring. 00:11:02.42\00:11:04.99 God and his angels comfort them 00:11:05.03\00:11:07.20 and motivate them 00:11:07.23\00:11:08.56 to move ahead despite challenges. 00:11:08.60\00:11:11.90 The faces, the sounds, the people, the landscapes, 00:11:11.93\00:11:15.97 besides being so small and completely isolated, 00:11:16.00\00:11:19.67 Shungnak is still a huge priority for Christ. 00:11:19.71\00:11:24.25 The Sherman's example 00:11:24.28\00:11:25.61 is a beautiful testimony of selflessness 00:11:25.65\00:11:28.75 to revive the mission. 00:11:28.78\00:11:30.95 They might be alone, 00:11:30.99\00:11:32.82 but they are never by themselves. 00:11:32.85\00:11:35.82 Jesus is my... 00:11:35.86\00:11:37.19 He's everything. 00:11:37.23\00:11:38.56 I mean, Jesus is the reason why I'm here. 00:11:38.59\00:11:41.53 If I don't, I mean, not for Him, 00:11:41.56\00:11:44.70 I won't be able to make it. 00:11:44.73\00:11:46.37 You know, I won't be able to live here 00:11:46.40\00:11:47.87 for four years. 00:11:47.90\00:11:49.24 Jesus, for me, He is everything. 00:11:49.27\00:11:51.57 He's my friend. He is my encouragement. 00:11:51.61\00:11:54.54 He is my strength. 00:11:54.58\00:11:56.64 He's the one I go to when I'm hurt. 00:11:56.68\00:11:58.61 When I even can't 00:11:58.65\00:11:59.98 maybe even talk to my own family, 00:12:00.02\00:12:01.35 He's the one I can speak to 00:12:01.38\00:12:02.72 about every single problem I have. 00:12:02.75\00:12:04.15 And He's the one who is changing me 00:12:04.19\00:12:07.76 from the inside out. 00:12:07.79\00:12:09.12 Well, that's about it for today's program, 00:12:22.04\00:12:23.84 but I hope that you've enjoyed our 360 degree view 00:12:23.87\00:12:26.91 of mission around the world. 00:12:26.94\00:12:28.64 And speaking of 360 degrees 00:12:28.68\00:12:30.81 behind me is the Mission Globe here on the Loma Linda campus. 00:12:30.85\00:12:35.42 And it's at the end of the Centennial Pathway. 00:12:35.45\00:12:39.19 And it's a reminder 00:12:39.22\00:12:40.56 of the importance of mission to Loma Linda 00:12:40.59\00:12:42.52 and engraved on stone all around this globe 00:12:42.56\00:12:47.06 are the names of graduates from this institution 00:12:47.10\00:12:50.50 who have gone to all parts of the world 00:12:50.53\00:12:52.67 to serve. 00:12:52.70\00:12:54.04 Now you may say, 00:12:54.07\00:12:55.40 well, that's wonderful for them, 00:12:55.44\00:12:56.77 but I've never had the opportunity 00:12:56.81\00:12:58.14 or I've never been called. 00:12:58.17\00:12:59.51 And that's fine. 00:12:59.54\00:13:00.88 We're all given different gifts, 00:13:00.91\00:13:02.24 but we are all called to pray and support mission 00:13:02.28\00:13:04.75 wherever it's happening. 00:13:04.78\00:13:06.11 And so I wanna thank you so much 00:13:06.15\00:13:07.78 for being part of the Adventist mission family 00:13:07.82\00:13:10.15 through your financial gifts, 00:13:10.19\00:13:12.15 through your prayers 00:13:12.19\00:13:13.52 and through your personal involvement. 00:13:13.56\00:13:15.19 And as a small thank you for your support of mission, 00:13:15.22\00:13:17.79 I'd like to send you an Adventist mission tote bag. 00:13:17.83\00:13:20.53 It's a little reminder of mission 00:13:20.56\00:13:22.56 in your daily tasks. 00:13:22.60\00:13:24.20 Well, for Advent Mission, I'm Gary Krause. 00:13:24.23\00:13:26.60 And I hope that you can join me next time 00:13:26.63\00:13:28.54 right here on Mission 360. 00:13:28.57\00:13:30.77
