The mission 00:00:09.70\00:00:11.04 of Loma Linda University Health, 00:00:11.07\00:00:13.14 urban church planting in Australia, 00:00:13.17\00:00:15.71 and a missionary family in remote Alaska 00:00:15.74\00:00:18.45 coming up next. 00:00:18.48\00:00:19.81 Hello and welcome to Mission 360. 00:00:56.18\00:00:57.89 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:57.92\00:00:59.29 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:59.32\00:01:00.86 from the campus of Loma Linda University Health 00:01:00.89\00:01:03.86 here in California. 00:01:03.89\00:01:05.23 And on today's program, 00:01:05.26\00:01:06.59 we'll be looking at the mission of Loma Linda, 00:01:06.63\00:01:08.73 which is to continue Christ's teaching 00:01:08.76\00:01:11.40 and healing ministry. 00:01:11.43\00:01:13.10 Behind me, you'll see a commemoration of a visit 00:01:13.13\00:01:16.84 in 1905 by Ellen White, 00:01:16.87\00:01:19.57 a co-founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:01:19.61\00:01:22.44 During that visit, she said, "This is the very place." 00:01:22.48\00:01:26.75 And she was referring to a vision 00:01:26.78\00:01:28.25 that she had received four years earlier, 00:01:28.28\00:01:30.65 where she had seen this land. 00:01:30.69\00:01:33.22 And this is the land where she saw a sanitarium 00:01:33.25\00:01:36.36 could be established. 00:01:36.39\00:01:37.89 Well, that was more than a hundred years ago 00:01:37.93\00:01:39.59 and the rest is history. 00:01:39.63\00:01:40.96 Loma Linda continues its mission 00:01:41.00\00:01:42.93 to prepare men and women for service around the world. 00:01:42.96\00:01:46.57 Loma Linda is known for many things. 00:01:46.60\00:01:48.27 One of which is that it's a so-called Blue Zone 00:01:48.30\00:01:50.91 where people live much longer on average 00:01:50.94\00:01:53.71 than the rest of the population. 00:01:53.74\00:01:55.44 Below me is a fitness center, 00:01:55.48\00:01:56.88 the Drayson Center which gives a free membership 00:01:56.91\00:01:59.81 to people in the community who are over 80 years of age. 00:01:59.85\00:02:03.72 They have more than 500 active members, 00:02:03.75\00:02:06.29 more than 80 years of age. 00:02:06.32\00:02:07.89 Or more about Loma Linda's mission 00:02:07.92\00:02:09.59 on today's program. 00:02:09.62\00:02:10.96 But first up, let's travel to Alaska. 00:02:10.99\00:02:13.26 Shungnak is part of the Northwest Arctic region. 00:02:46.76\00:02:49.90 A very remote area, 00:02:49.93\00:02:51.57 completely disconnect from any roads 00:02:51.60\00:02:54.50 to neighboring villages. 00:02:54.54\00:02:56.60 Meet Anthony Sherman, his wife, Irene, 00:02:56.64\00:02:59.14 and their son Hezekiah. 00:02:59.17\00:03:01.21 Tony moved to Shungnak to take a mission position 00:03:01.24\00:03:04.41 that the Alaskan Conference had been looking to fill. 00:03:04.45\00:03:07.72 My wife and I came to Shungnak 00:03:07.75\00:03:09.45 because this is where God was calling us to. 00:03:09.48\00:03:12.49 We had been doing vacation Bible school 00:03:12.52\00:03:14.12 here for some time, 00:03:14.16\00:03:15.56 and we believe that it was time for someone to move here 00:03:15.59\00:03:19.26 and it was on our hearts to do so. 00:03:19.29\00:03:21.20 When the Sherman family moved to Shungnak, 00:03:21.23\00:03:23.97 they did not have any running water 00:03:24.00\00:03:26.17 and only a wood stove to heat their home. 00:03:26.20\00:03:29.10 For the first three weeks, 00:03:29.14\00:03:30.57 they lived in the small church 00:03:30.61\00:03:32.17 and then moved into the parsonage 00:03:32.21\00:03:34.58 right next to the church. 00:03:34.61\00:03:37.11 Well, the challenge is being out 00:03:37.15\00:03:38.81 in the middle of nowhere 00:03:38.85\00:03:40.18 when you don't know anybody. 00:03:40.22\00:03:42.68 I mean, you know the people out here, 00:03:42.72\00:03:44.32 but when you don't have friends 00:03:44.35\00:03:47.32 and when you can't just get out whenever you want to, 00:03:47.36\00:03:52.19 or when I want to see my family in the Philippines, 00:03:52.23\00:03:54.00 I can't really do that, 00:03:54.03\00:03:55.36 you know, because it costs so much money to travel. 00:03:55.40\00:03:58.07 Some of the challenges that that we deal with are, 00:03:58.10\00:04:02.10 you know, the logistics, the climate, 00:04:02.14\00:04:05.44 the different struggles that are present in 00:04:05.47\00:04:08.64 in the village. 00:04:08.68\00:04:10.01 But I have my husband, my son, and I have God with me, so... 00:04:10.05\00:04:14.02 It's been a positive experience for us as well, 00:04:14.05\00:04:16.42 because we're in the center of God's will. 00:04:16.45\00:04:19.75 And to be in the center of God's will, 00:04:19.79\00:04:21.82 there is no other place to be. 00:04:21.86\00:04:24.59 Tony works at the local clinic as a healthcare provider, 00:04:24.63\00:04:28.00 along with his colleagues 00:04:28.03\00:04:29.36 he is the first to address all the health problems 00:04:29.40\00:04:32.37 and concerns of the locals in the village. 00:04:32.40\00:04:35.80 Tony and his team respond to emergencies 00:04:35.84\00:04:38.07 that range from suicides to snowmobile accidents. 00:04:38.11\00:04:41.78 If any emergency is beyond 00:04:41.81\00:04:43.24 what the local clinic can manage, 00:04:43.28\00:04:45.51 he uses a medevac plane to transport patients, 00:04:45.55\00:04:49.55 160 miles to Kotzebue. 00:04:49.58\00:04:53.49 Through his position, 00:04:53.52\00:04:54.86 Tony is able to gain 00:04:54.89\00:04:56.32 the community's trust and respect, 00:04:56.36\00:04:58.89 and he does not waste any opportunities 00:04:58.93\00:05:01.83 to connect with people. 00:05:01.86\00:05:03.83 Well, besides our work at the clinic, 00:05:03.87\00:05:05.80 besides what I do for my profession here, 00:05:05.83\00:05:09.17 we spend a fair amount of time with kids 00:05:09.20\00:05:11.21 as well as with mostly elders. 00:05:11.24\00:05:13.68 During the week on Mondays, we have a youth group 00:05:13.71\00:05:17.25 that we do for kids that are eight years and older, 00:05:17.28\00:05:19.25 and they come to our house. 00:05:19.28\00:05:20.62 Happy, happy all week 00:05:20.65\00:05:23.22 There's lots of work for me 00:05:23.25\00:05:26.72 I stand, oh Lord, on the Word of God 00:05:26.76\00:05:30.49 To be happy all week 00:05:30.53\00:05:34.40 On Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings, 00:05:34.43\00:05:38.20 we try to make it a chance to get out to people's houses. 00:05:38.23\00:05:40.34 Wednesday night, we have Bible studies 00:05:40.37\00:05:41.70 there with a family. 00:05:41.74\00:05:43.07 Thursday nights, 00:05:43.10\00:05:44.44 we usually on that particular night, 00:05:44.47\00:05:46.21 we'll take our musical instruments 00:05:46.24\00:05:47.71 and we'll go and do some singing 00:05:47.74\00:05:49.08 with usually elderly people that are in our village. 00:05:49.11\00:05:54.95 A lot of things that we do. 00:05:54.98\00:05:56.32 Sabbath, we will have Saturday school for, 00:05:56.35\00:05:58.69 you know, Sabbath school for kids. 00:05:58.72\00:06:00.36 We will try to hold adult services. 00:06:00.39\00:06:03.99 Saturday night, 00:06:04.03\00:06:05.36 we'll make a trip out to another elder's house. 00:06:05.39\00:06:07.56 You know, we try to be in people's homes 00:06:07.60\00:06:09.26 as much as possible. 00:06:09.30\00:06:10.63 The church and parsonage were built in the 1970s, 00:06:15.70\00:06:19.57 but have not had an active mission post 00:06:19.61\00:06:21.91 since the late 1980s. 00:06:21.94\00:06:24.31 For a few years, 00:06:24.35\00:06:25.68 the building has been used for vacation Bible school 00:06:25.71\00:06:28.42 by the Delta Junction Adventist Church. 00:06:28.45\00:06:31.49 Tony and Irene have been holding Bible studies 00:06:31.52\00:06:33.76 in their house 00:06:33.79\00:06:35.12 since the church is not suitable 00:06:35.16\00:06:37.63 for any fellowship during the winter months. 00:06:37.66\00:06:41.23 Our dream for this church 00:06:41.26\00:06:42.60 is that someday there would be people in it. 00:06:42.63\00:06:47.50 Right now it's not really fit for services 00:06:47.54\00:06:54.48 in the winter really or the summer. 00:06:54.51\00:06:56.81 It needs a lot of work. 00:06:56.85\00:06:59.18 And right now we have no membership. 00:06:59.21\00:07:00.55 We have no attendance, 00:07:00.58\00:07:01.92 but our dream and hope and confidence 00:07:01.95\00:07:04.82 is that God will provide us with a fellowship here. 00:07:04.85\00:07:08.76 My guest is Dr. Richard Hart, 00:07:16.46\00:07:18.30 who is the president of Loma Linda University, 00:07:18.33\00:07:21.14 Dr. Hart, thanks for joining us. 00:07:21.17\00:07:22.54 Good to be with you, Gary. 00:07:22.57\00:07:23.91 Can you please give our viewers some sort of an idea 00:07:23.94\00:07:26.07 of the size and scope of Loma Linda University? 00:07:26.11\00:07:30.05 Well, we now actually call it Loma Linda University Health 00:07:30.08\00:07:32.85 because we're one combined corporation. 00:07:32.88\00:07:34.68 We have approximately 15,000 employees, 00:07:34.72\00:07:37.19 about 4,500 students 00:07:37.22\00:07:39.55 and roughly a thousand doctors on our staff. 00:07:39.59\00:07:41.52 So that's the scope of Loma Linda. 00:07:41.56\00:07:43.22 Wow. 00:07:43.26\00:07:44.59 Now describe some of the different schools 00:07:44.63\00:07:46.29 that you have? 00:07:46.33\00:07:47.66 There's eight professional schools 00:07:47.70\00:07:49.03 in the university. 00:07:49.06\00:07:50.40 So many people think of us as medicine, nursing, 00:07:50.43\00:07:52.20 dentistry that we certainly have, 00:07:52.23\00:07:53.84 but there's also pharmacy. 00:07:53.87\00:07:55.20 One of our newer schools, 00:07:55.24\00:07:56.57 the school of behavioral health, 00:07:56.60\00:07:57.94 the school of public health, 00:07:57.97\00:07:59.31 the school of allied health professions 00:07:59.34\00:08:00.68 and the school of religion. 00:08:00.71\00:08:02.04 The religion school is actually the smallest school 00:08:02.08\00:08:03.85 by their own students, but the largest school, 00:08:03.88\00:08:06.31 because they teach all of our students. 00:08:06.35\00:08:08.15 So they teach across the entire campus. 00:08:08.18\00:08:09.52 Right. 00:08:09.55\00:08:10.89 So how would you summarize the mission, 00:08:10.92\00:08:13.76 the purpose of the institution? 00:08:13.79\00:08:15.99 I mean, we take very seriously 00:08:16.02\00:08:17.36 what we now call mission focused learning. 00:08:17.39\00:08:19.39 How do we prepare our graduates to serve the world? 00:08:19.43\00:08:22.86 And we do that in a number of ways. 00:08:22.90\00:08:24.23 We actually do a lot of community activities. 00:08:24.27\00:08:26.63 We recently started a San Bernardino campus, 00:08:26.67\00:08:28.57 and this is what we call the San Manuel Gateway College 00:08:28.60\00:08:31.27 to engage our students 00:08:31.31\00:08:32.64 with the local community issues, 00:08:32.67\00:08:34.01 to help them understand cultural and economic issues 00:08:34.04\00:08:36.41 in a disadvantaged community. 00:08:36.44\00:08:38.28 And then, of course, we leverage from there 00:08:38.31\00:08:39.68 to go abroad. 00:08:39.71\00:08:41.05 We have a program they call SIMS, 00:08:41.08\00:08:42.42 Students International Mission Service, 00:08:42.45\00:08:43.89 that now it sends about 600 students a year 00:08:43.92\00:08:46.76 to go someplace every year. 00:08:46.79\00:08:48.62 About 15% of our student body 00:08:48.66\00:08:50.39 and we continue to grow that number. 00:08:50.43\00:08:52.29 And then we have a number of programs 00:08:52.33\00:08:53.80 that label those students 00:08:53.83\00:08:55.46 to go to serve after they graduate. 00:08:55.50\00:08:57.93 We have a system set up now with endowments, 00:08:57.97\00:08:59.87 so that any Loma Linda graduate from any school, 00:08:59.90\00:09:02.64 if they want to serve abroad after graduation, 00:09:02.67\00:09:04.61 we will make their educational debt payments 00:09:04.64\00:09:06.41 for them while they serve abroad. 00:09:06.44\00:09:08.71 So that's opened up the whole world field, 00:09:08.74\00:09:10.51 not just medical students and dental students, 00:09:10.55\00:09:12.41 but all of our students, 00:09:12.45\00:09:13.78 public health, nursing, pharmacy, 00:09:13.82\00:09:15.52 all the different students to have a chance 00:09:15.55\00:09:17.19 to serve abroad. 00:09:17.22\00:09:18.75 So why is that so important to you as an institution? 00:09:18.79\00:09:22.69 Well, to me, this is what Loma Linda needs to do 00:09:22.72\00:09:25.59 to still be Loma Linda. 00:09:25.63\00:09:27.20 We often look and they say, 00:09:27.23\00:09:28.56 "Well, what a wonderful thing you do for the world church?" 00:09:28.60\00:09:30.83 I look at it exactly the other way around, 00:09:30.87\00:09:32.50 what a wonderful thing the world church provides us 00:09:32.53\00:09:35.77 to prepare our students for service, 00:09:35.80\00:09:37.77 because it's been shown many, many times 00:09:37.81\00:09:39.67 that a person that engages in service, 00:09:39.71\00:09:42.44 is truly happy and complete in and of themselves. 00:09:42.48\00:09:45.31 So that's what we're trying to do is 00:09:45.35\00:09:46.68 give our students a sense of the skills, 00:09:46.72\00:09:50.02 the sense of accomplishment to be able to engage 00:09:50.05\00:09:51.99 in service around the world. 00:09:52.02\00:09:53.79 Now, you're not just talking about this theoretically, 00:09:53.82\00:09:55.86 because I understand that you were 00:09:55.89\00:09:57.23 one of the very first Adventist volunteers 00:09:57.26\00:10:00.50 to go over overseas to serve. 00:10:00.53\00:10:02.86 Tell me about that? 00:10:02.90\00:10:04.30 Well, that was a long time ago, 00:10:04.33\00:10:05.77 but actually after my sophomore year 00:10:05.80\00:10:08.50 at Walla Walla College, 00:10:08.54\00:10:09.87 I was the first student missionary 00:10:09.90\00:10:11.24 they sent abroad. 00:10:11.27\00:10:12.61 Well, at that time, we just did three months, 00:10:12.64\00:10:13.98 raised our own funding. 00:10:14.01\00:10:15.34 And I went down to the jungles of Peru 00:10:15.38\00:10:16.78 and worked down there in Iquitos, 00:10:16.81\00:10:18.15 became a dentist, pulled a hundred teeth 00:10:18.18\00:10:20.35 and did various things down there in Peru. 00:10:20.38\00:10:22.28 So that was my first introduction 00:10:22.32\00:10:23.65 to service abroad. 00:10:23.69\00:10:25.02 And how did that affect your outlook on mission? 00:10:25.05\00:10:27.42 I was already focused on serving abroad 00:10:27.46\00:10:29.02 even before then, 00:10:29.06\00:10:30.39 but that certainly accelerated it. 00:10:30.43\00:10:31.76 I'm fascinated by cultural understanding 00:10:31.79\00:10:34.10 and all the issues that come up 00:10:34.13\00:10:35.46 when you work in different settings. 00:10:35.50\00:10:36.97 So that's been the story of my life. 00:10:37.00\00:10:39.60 Many people think I grew up as a missionary kid. 00:10:39.63\00:10:41.24 I did not. I grew up in Northern Idaho. 00:10:41.27\00:10:42.87 I mean, I was a typical farm boy, 00:10:42.90\00:10:44.37 Northern Idaho. 00:10:44.41\00:10:46.14 But I was bitten by the idea of working abroad. 00:10:46.17\00:10:49.08 Then you later served in Africa? 00:10:49.11\00:10:50.48 Yes. 00:10:50.51\00:10:51.85 We worked actually for the US State Department 00:10:51.88\00:10:54.22 in the country of Tanzania. 00:10:54.25\00:10:55.58 Helped to develop 00:10:55.62\00:10:56.95 a national maternal and child health program 00:10:56.99\00:10:58.92 in the ministry of health for the government of Tanzania. 00:10:58.95\00:11:01.56 And then came back to Loma Linda, 00:11:01.59\00:11:02.92 and I've been there ever since. 00:11:02.96\00:11:04.29 Wonderful. 00:11:04.33\00:11:05.66 Now, you described 00:11:05.69\00:11:07.03 a huge institution to us, mammoth. 00:11:07.06\00:11:08.96 How do you keep something so big 00:11:09.00\00:11:11.10 with so many departments? 00:11:11.13\00:11:12.70 How do you keep it focused on mission? 00:11:12.73\00:11:14.90 That's always a challenge, 00:11:14.94\00:11:16.27 of course, with as many activities 00:11:16.30\00:11:17.64 we have going on, 00:11:17.67\00:11:19.01 but we're very deliberate about that. 00:11:19.04\00:11:20.48 And we basically have programming. 00:11:20.51\00:11:22.88 We have actual activities. 00:11:22.91\00:11:24.41 We encourage the students to take part in. 00:11:24.45\00:11:26.25 It becomes part of their curriculum. 00:11:26.28\00:11:27.92 One of the points I make at Loma Linda, 00:11:27.95\00:11:29.28 this isn't co-curricular activities. 00:11:29.32\00:11:31.09 This is curricular activities. 00:11:31.12\00:11:32.92 This is how you become a professional. 00:11:32.95\00:11:35.49 And so, we are very deliberate about the kind of program. 00:11:35.52\00:11:38.26 In my view, you do this by experiential learning. 00:11:38.29\00:11:40.80 This is not classroom teaching. 00:11:40.83\00:11:42.60 This is, how do I engage with human need in a real way. 00:11:42.63\00:11:46.17 And that tends to help to influence who I become. 00:11:46.20\00:11:48.64 Excellent. 00:11:48.67\00:11:50.01 Tell us about Adventist Health International 00:11:50.04\00:11:52.37 and the work that it does? 00:11:52.41\00:11:54.88 About 20 years ago now, 00:11:54.91\00:11:56.24 we recognize that many of our mission hospitals 00:11:56.28\00:11:58.35 were caught up 00:11:58.38\00:11:59.71 in increasing competition from others, 00:11:59.75\00:12:02.05 decreasing professionals, 00:12:02.08\00:12:03.42 wanting to work for them and so on. 00:12:03.45\00:12:04.79 So we started AHI, Adventist Health International, 00:12:04.82\00:12:06.52 and try to work on that. 00:12:06.55\00:12:07.92 We now have some 40 hospitals 00:12:07.96\00:12:09.36 that we work with around the world. 00:12:09.39\00:12:11.39 It's a matter of trying to set up a better system 00:12:11.43\00:12:13.33 of governance and management, 00:12:13.36\00:12:14.96 encouraging donors to once again engage 00:12:15.00\00:12:16.77 with our institutions, 00:12:16.80\00:12:18.13 encouraging young Adventists and professionals 00:12:18.17\00:12:20.27 to come and be part of our institutions, 00:12:20.30\00:12:22.27 all those things we've gradually lost 00:12:22.30\00:12:23.64 through the years. 00:12:23.67\00:12:25.01 So we've tried to carefully develop 00:12:25.04\00:12:26.44 a management and governance system 00:12:26.47\00:12:28.14 that still leaves ownership with the local church, 00:12:28.18\00:12:31.08 but brings in the kind of expertise 00:12:31.11\00:12:32.81 and management models 00:12:32.85\00:12:34.55 that can help to reassure donors 00:12:34.58\00:12:36.05 and professionals 00:12:36.08\00:12:37.42 that it's worthwhile to engage with the church 00:12:37.45\00:12:38.79 and becoming a voice of the church. 00:12:38.82\00:12:40.16 Okay, wonderful. 00:12:40.19\00:12:41.52 Now, Dr. Hart, one of the things 00:12:41.56\00:12:42.89 that's very important to us in global mission 00:12:42.92\00:12:44.86 is the great growing urban areas 00:12:44.89\00:12:47.33 of the world. 00:12:47.36\00:12:48.70 And you're a public health professional. 00:12:48.73\00:12:50.17 What does the church have to offer to the cities? 00:12:50.20\00:12:54.57 One of the things and particularly in Africa, 00:12:54.60\00:12:56.84 less so in Asia, 00:12:56.87\00:12:58.41 most of our hospitals are rural hospitals. 00:12:58.44\00:13:01.34 We have very little in the cities. 00:13:01.38\00:13:03.08 And so one of the objectives we have right now 00:13:03.11\00:13:05.05 is establish medical centers in the cities, 00:13:05.08\00:13:07.42 not big fancy hospitals, 00:13:07.45\00:13:08.82 but multi-specialty clinics places 00:13:08.85\00:13:10.72 that our young Adventist health professionals 00:13:10.75\00:13:13.02 come to work, support themselves, 00:13:13.05\00:13:15.39 but service and witness to that city. 00:13:15.42\00:13:17.69 So we're now in the process of building 00:13:17.73\00:13:19.19 one of those in Lusaka, Zambia, 00:13:19.23\00:13:21.53 a place we call Chalala one in a Long Way, 00:13:21.56\00:13:24.43 Malawi and other one in Blantyre, Malawi 00:13:24.47\00:13:27.20 and looking at other places that we can actually establish 00:13:27.24\00:13:29.34 city centers of influence. 00:13:29.37\00:13:30.71 Fantastic. 00:13:30.74\00:13:32.07 We'd like to go into some of the other countries. 00:13:32.11\00:13:33.44 I mean, this is the answer to, 00:13:33.48\00:13:34.81 frankly, the broad expanse of Northern Africa 00:13:34.84\00:13:36.54 and the Middle East, 00:13:36.58\00:13:37.91 is how do we establish things like that? 00:13:37.95\00:13:39.45 So we actually have graduates who are saying, 00:13:39.48\00:13:41.42 "Tell me how and when?" 00:13:41.45\00:13:43.02 I just recently had a young dental couple 00:13:43.05\00:13:44.82 come to me 00:13:44.85\00:13:46.19 both of them, third year dental students, 00:13:46.22\00:13:47.76 Korean-American background say our passion 00:13:47.79\00:13:50.46 is we are going to start a dental clinic 00:13:50.49\00:13:51.83 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia 00:13:51.86\00:13:53.86 where we have very little as a church. 00:13:53.90\00:13:55.26 I say it's great. 00:13:55.30\00:13:56.63 We'll work with you to get that set up. 00:13:56.67\00:13:58.07 Fantastic. 00:13:58.10\00:13:59.43 Dr. Hart, thanks for sharing with us 00:13:59.47\00:14:00.80 and thank you for what you're doing 00:14:00.84\00:14:02.17 through Loma Linda. 00:14:02.20\00:14:03.54 Thank you. 00:14:03.57\00:14:04.91 And viewers at home, please pray for Dr. Hart 00:14:04.94\00:14:06.61 and Loma Linda University Health. 00:14:06.64\00:14:08.58 What a wonderful ministry, 00:14:08.61\00:14:10.08 what a blessing they are 00:14:10.11\00:14:11.88 to helping communities all around the world. 00:14:11.91\00:14:14.95 Finding hope not just in life now, 00:14:14.98\00:14:17.55 but also hope for the future. 00:14:17.59\00:14:19.19 We'll be right back right after this break. 00:14:19.22\00:14:21.16
