Welcome back to the old city of Jerusalem. 00:00:12.01\00:00:14.41 Traditionally, the city is divided up 00:00:14.44\00:00:16.24 into four quarters. 00:00:16.28\00:00:18.01 I'm standing in the Muslim quarter, 00:00:18.05\00:00:20.15 over this way is the Jewish quarter, 00:00:20.18\00:00:22.55 over here is the Christian quarter, 00:00:22.58\00:00:24.49 and to the front is the Armenian quarter. 00:00:24.52\00:00:27.92 Now you won't find any painted lines 00:00:27.96\00:00:30.43 neatly dividing up all these quarters, 00:00:30.46\00:00:32.39 but it's divided religiously, 00:00:32.43\00:00:35.96 culturally, and historically. 00:00:36.00\00:00:38.13 Next up, we have a story with Homer Trecartin. 00:00:38.17\00:00:41.74 Maybe you grew up like I did, reading books 00:00:41.77\00:00:45.27 from the early pioneer missionaries, 00:00:45.31\00:00:47.64 mission stories, I loved them. 00:00:47.68\00:00:50.35 I can remember sitting enthralled for hours 00:00:50.38\00:00:53.05 as I would read stories by Eric B. Hare, 00:00:53.08\00:00:55.78 or Josephine Cunnington Edwards, 00:00:55.82\00:00:58.22 or Norma Youngberg. 00:00:58.25\00:00:59.79 Turning page after page 00:00:59.82\00:01:01.76 and wondering what was going to happen next. 00:01:01.79\00:01:05.19 I learned about the world through these mission stories. 00:01:05.23\00:01:09.53 I learned that there are still miracles today, 00:01:09.56\00:01:13.17 not just back in Bible times. 00:01:13.20\00:01:15.70 I learned that no matter what a person ate, 00:01:15.74\00:01:18.57 no matter where they live, 00:01:18.61\00:01:19.97 no matter what they look like, God loves them. 00:01:20.01\00:01:23.75 And so did I. 00:01:23.78\00:01:26.11 But one thing I didn't learn from the mission stories, 00:01:26.15\00:01:28.98 at least I don't remember it. 00:01:29.02\00:01:31.32 I didn't realize that often 00:01:31.35\00:01:33.52 when a missionary went to a new area 00:01:33.56\00:01:36.59 where there had never been anyone before 00:01:36.62\00:01:38.99 to share the gospel, 00:01:39.03\00:01:40.60 often they would find that one group of people 00:01:40.63\00:01:43.06 was more receptive than another. 00:01:43.10\00:01:45.77 And, of course, they focused on the receptive group. 00:01:45.80\00:01:49.97 But time went on and the church grew 00:01:50.01\00:01:52.31 and became well established and in many cases, 00:01:52.34\00:01:55.54 it was still only among that initially receptive group. 00:01:55.58\00:02:01.18 Now, sometimes 100 years later, 00:02:01.22\00:02:04.32 we still have large areas where one group of people 00:02:04.35\00:02:09.72 have been receptive to the gospel 00:02:09.76\00:02:11.56 and make up our church. 00:02:11.59\00:02:13.16 But other groups in the same area 00:02:13.19\00:02:15.80 have never been touched. 00:02:15.83\00:02:18.00 In one small country, 00:02:18.03\00:02:20.77 the Adventist Church has one member 00:02:20.80\00:02:24.14 for every 21 people in the country. 00:02:24.17\00:02:26.68 That's a pretty good average. 00:02:26.71\00:02:28.44 By comparison, in the United States, 00:02:28.48\00:02:31.18 there's one Adventist for every 285 people. 00:02:31.21\00:02:34.92 And in Turkey, there's one Adventist 00:02:34.95\00:02:36.79 for every 691,000 people, 00:02:36.82\00:02:40.96 but in this country, one Adventist for every 21 00:02:40.99\00:02:44.63 and it almost seems like we've finished the work. 00:02:44.66\00:02:48.76 But have we really? 00:02:48.80\00:02:50.57 When we look a little bit closer, 00:02:50.60\00:02:52.10 we realize that there are huge groups of people 00:02:52.13\00:02:56.04 even in that country 00:02:56.07\00:02:58.04 that have never been touched with the gospel. 00:02:58.07\00:03:01.98 Hundreds of thousands of people 00:03:02.01\00:03:04.91 where there's almost zero Seventh-Day Adventists. 00:03:04.95\00:03:09.22 The Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:03:09.25\00:03:11.45 started the Global Mission centers 00:03:11.49\00:03:14.56 to try and help reach people 00:03:14.59\00:03:17.69 from non-Christian backgrounds with the gospel, 00:03:17.73\00:03:21.00 trying to see what can we do to touch the lives 00:03:21.03\00:03:25.10 in some of these non-receptive groups. 00:03:25.13\00:03:28.50 In this particular country, 00:03:28.54\00:03:30.71 the Center for South Asian religions 00:03:30.74\00:03:34.98 was working with the local conference 00:03:35.01\00:03:37.31 to try and set up an urban center of influence 00:03:37.35\00:03:40.95 and begin to hold health programs 00:03:40.98\00:03:42.95 in the community in hopes of touching the lives 00:03:42.98\00:03:46.49 of these hundreds of thousands of Hindus 00:03:46.52\00:03:49.62 from Indian background that had moved 00:03:49.66\00:03:51.79 into that country many generations ago, 00:03:51.83\00:03:55.23 but who still were not interested. 00:03:55.26\00:03:58.93 Evangelistic series had been held over 00:03:58.97\00:04:01.50 and over again in that country. 00:04:01.54\00:04:03.47 But nobody from that Hindu background 00:04:03.51\00:04:06.17 or hardly anybody 00:04:06.21\00:04:07.54 was ever coming to those meetings. 00:04:07.58\00:04:10.35 As they held these health expos 00:04:10.38\00:04:12.85 and other programs in the community, 00:04:12.88\00:04:16.22 they made many friends, 00:04:16.25\00:04:18.05 but still nobody was interested 00:04:18.09\00:04:20.56 in studying the Bible. 00:04:20.59\00:04:22.92 So one day, they decided 00:04:22.96\00:04:25.49 to try an interesting experiment. 00:04:25.53\00:04:29.00 One of the things in that culture 00:04:29.03\00:04:30.93 that people love is called a katha, 00:04:30.97\00:04:33.74 or storytelling. 00:04:33.77\00:04:35.97 And so the Center for South Asian religions, 00:04:36.00\00:04:39.07 the Global Mission center 00:04:39.11\00:04:40.98 helped the conference to set up 00:04:41.01\00:04:43.61 and operate a katha, a storytelling. 00:04:43.65\00:04:46.51 It would last for a week or so every day. 00:04:46.55\00:04:49.52 To advertise it, they had a parade. 00:04:49.55\00:04:51.89 They went through the city with floats, 00:04:51.92\00:04:54.42 each float depicting another story 00:04:54.46\00:04:56.66 from the life of Jesus. 00:04:56.69\00:04:58.33 They had big banners that invited people 00:04:58.36\00:05:00.60 to come to the katha. 00:05:00.63\00:05:02.10 And on the first night, hundreds of people 00:05:02.13\00:05:05.83 came to this storytelling, to this katha. 00:05:05.87\00:05:09.27 That's amazing in an area where we've never had people 00:05:09.30\00:05:12.34 from the Hindu community coming to our meetings before. 00:05:12.37\00:05:15.58 They listened and enthralled as each night 00:05:15.61\00:05:18.21 they would hear Hindi songs, 00:05:18.25\00:05:20.15 they would hear and see skits 00:05:20.18\00:05:22.85 put on depicting scenes from the life of Jesus 00:05:22.88\00:05:26.35 and they would hear Bible verses 00:05:26.39\00:05:28.09 that went along with them being read. 00:05:28.12\00:05:30.63 At the end of that series, 00:05:30.66\00:05:32.89 many people came up to our workers and said, 00:05:32.93\00:05:37.10 "This was amazing. 00:05:37.13\00:05:38.67 When is the next katha? 00:05:38.70\00:05:40.27 I want to know more about the Bible 00:05:40.30\00:05:42.00 and this Jesus you've been talking about? 00:05:42.04\00:05:44.74 Can somebody tell me more about the Bible?" 00:05:44.77\00:05:49.54 Your faithful tithes and mission offerings 00:05:49.58\00:05:52.48 have been sending missionaries around the world for years, 00:05:52.51\00:05:56.52 but the work isn't finished yet. 00:05:56.55\00:05:59.02 The Bible says this gospel must go to every nation, 00:05:59.05\00:06:02.42 and kindred, and tribe, and tongue, and people group. 00:06:02.46\00:06:06.19 And there are still some massive groups 00:06:06.23\00:06:08.93 that have not yet heard the gospel in a way that 00:06:08.96\00:06:12.07 they can understand and relate to. 00:06:12.10\00:06:15.04 If you would like to know more about 00:06:15.07\00:06:16.84 what the Global Mission centers can do to help you love 00:06:16.87\00:06:20.58 and live with your neighbors 00:06:20.61\00:06:22.44 and others who are not from a Christian background, 00:06:22.48\00:06:26.05 then go to the website globalmissioncenters.org 00:06:26.08\00:06:30.62 and be praying for the people around us 00:06:30.65\00:06:33.46 who have still never heard. 00:06:33.49\00:06:35.56 Missionaries aren't just in the old books. 00:06:35.59\00:06:39.33 You are a missionary today. 00:06:39.36\00:06:42.36 Behind me is the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, 00:06:42.40\00:06:45.00 located in the Christian quarter 00:06:45.03\00:06:46.74 of the Old City of Jerusalem. 00:06:46.77\00:06:48.74 And for Orthodox Christians, 00:06:48.77\00:06:50.11 this contains their two holiest sites 00:06:50.14\00:06:53.61 where they believe Jesus was crucified 00:06:53.64\00:06:56.61 and also where they believe His tomb is located. 00:06:56.64\00:07:00.12 Well, next up, we're going to visit 00:07:00.15\00:07:01.48 one of my favorite mission stories. 00:07:01.52\00:07:03.59 It's the story of the Trumpet family. 00:07:03.62\00:07:05.99 We call them the Trumpet family. 00:07:06.02\00:07:07.82 And let's visit them 00:07:07.86\00:07:09.39 witnessing in a unique way on the streets of Kinshasa. 00:07:09.42\00:07:13.90 Pastor Lobo is a Seventh-day Adventist pastor. 00:07:23.17\00:07:27.24 He lives in the city of Kinshasa 00:07:27.28\00:07:29.14 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 00:07:29.18\00:07:31.78 In a city with more than 10 million people, 00:07:31.81\00:07:34.45 sharing God's Word can be difficult. 00:07:34.48\00:07:37.19 But Pastor Lobo and his family 00:07:37.22\00:07:38.95 have found a unique way of getting people's attention. 00:07:38.99\00:07:42.09 The family goes to the streets 00:07:54.30\00:07:55.87 and plays homemade trumpets for the community. 00:07:55.90\00:07:58.11 As the children play their trumpets in the street, 00:08:07.98\00:08:10.75 their father preaches the Word of Jesus. 00:08:10.79\00:08:13.36 Hallelujah Amen. 00:08:13.39\00:08:15.22 Hallelujah. Amen. 00:08:15.26\00:08:16.99 People passing by are captivated 00:08:23.50\00:08:25.33 by the unique sight 00:08:25.37\00:08:26.90 and listen to the pastor's words. 00:08:26.94\00:08:29.94 The pastor brings out his piano 00:08:29.97\00:08:31.64 to continue praising in the street. 00:08:31.67\00:08:34.24 The songs they play 00:08:34.28\00:08:35.61 tell of the wonderful things God has done. 00:08:35.64\00:08:38.41 They share how Jesus love is given freely 00:08:38.45\00:08:40.65 to anybody who is willing to accept Him as their Savior. 00:08:40.68\00:08:44.52 The people standing by soon join in the praise. 00:08:44.55\00:08:47.36 We praise Our only Lord Jesus Christ 00:08:51.13\00:08:54.76 King of kings 00:08:54.80\00:08:57.47 Their unique street side Trumpet Ministry 00:08:57.50\00:08:59.73 has allowed many people to hear about Jesus. 00:08:59.77\00:09:03.04 The children are thrilled 00:09:03.07\00:09:04.41 to help their father teach God's message. 00:09:04.44\00:09:06.94 It's amazing to see how God can use something 00:09:06.98\00:09:09.34 as simple as a homemade trumpet 00:09:09.38\00:09:11.25 and a willing family 00:09:11.28\00:09:12.61 to be important instruments for His purpose. 00:09:12.65\00:09:16.12 This family worships in their home 00:09:16.15\00:09:17.95 so that they are spiritually fed 00:09:17.99\00:09:19.42 and the children may continue to grow serving God. 00:09:19.45\00:09:23.76 Here in Kinshasa, 00:09:23.79\00:09:25.13 the children are on fire for the Lord. 00:09:25.16\00:09:27.50 They want to serve Him any way they can. 00:09:27.53\00:09:30.67 But on Sabbath they have no place to meet 00:09:30.70\00:09:32.63 for Sabbath school. 00:09:32.67\00:09:34.10 They sit in the same area with the adults 00:09:34.14\00:09:36.00 where they may not understand the message 00:09:36.04\00:09:37.77 or are forced to worship outside 00:09:37.81\00:09:39.44 under the sometimes harsh elements of Africa. 00:09:39.47\00:09:43.35 A portion of your 13th Sabbath Offering 00:09:43.38\00:09:45.41 will go to help build shelters 00:09:45.45\00:09:46.98 for the children of Kinshasa to worship. 00:09:47.02\00:09:49.78 Here they will be able to learn about 00:09:49.82\00:09:51.35 the love of Jesus 00:09:51.39\00:09:52.72 and grow to be faithful servants of God. 00:09:52.75\00:09:56.02 Please pray for these children 00:09:56.06\00:09:57.66 and others in East Central Africa 00:09:57.69\00:09:59.53 who are being used as instruments for God. 00:09:59.56\00:10:02.50 And thank you for your faithful support 00:10:02.53\00:10:04.70 of mission around the world. 00:10:04.73\00:10:07.07 We worship Jesus Christ 00:10:07.10\00:10:10.01 King of kings 00:10:10.04\00:10:11.37 Well, thanks so much for joining us 00:10:32.53\00:10:33.96 for today's program and I hope that you've been 00:10:34.00\00:10:36.16 inspired and that you have been informed 00:10:36.20\00:10:39.03 by what you've seen and heard. 00:10:39.07\00:10:40.84 Around the world today there are many people 00:10:40.87\00:10:42.70 who are on the front lines of mission, 00:10:42.74\00:10:45.01 planting churches, 00:10:45.04\00:10:46.47 sharing God's love in practical ways 00:10:46.51\00:10:48.38 in many different areas in cities, 00:10:48.41\00:10:50.78 in rural areas, older people, younger people, 00:10:50.81\00:10:54.12 and thank you so much 00:10:54.15\00:10:55.48 for your continuing support for mission, 00:10:55.52\00:10:57.49 through your prayers, through your financial support, 00:10:57.52\00:11:00.29 and also through your personal involvement. 00:11:00.32\00:11:02.56 And as a small thank you 00:11:02.59\00:11:03.93 for your continuing participation 00:11:03.96\00:11:05.96 in mission with us, 00:11:05.99\00:11:07.33 I'd like to send you a copy of the Mission Spotlight DVD. 00:11:07.36\00:11:10.97 It's full of stories just like you see 00:11:11.00\00:11:13.27 right here on Mission 360. 00:11:13.30\00:11:15.54 Well, that's it for today's program. 00:11:15.57\00:11:17.34 And for Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause. 00:11:17.37\00:11:19.37 And I hope that you can join me next time right here 00:11:19.41\00:11:22.04 on Mission 360. 00:11:22.08\00:11:23.41
