Some of my favorite stories from the past, 00:00:15.28\00:00:17.38 including the little church planter 00:00:17.41\00:00:19.01 on the Amazon River, and the Trumpet family 00:00:19.05\00:00:21.98 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. 00:00:22.02\00:00:24.79 All that and much more coming up next. 00:00:24.82\00:00:27.02 Hello and welcome to Mission 360. 00:00:51.45\00:00:54.05 Coming to you today 00:00:54.08\00:00:55.42 from the city of Jerusalem in Israel. 00:00:55.45\00:00:58.39 You know, Jesus often came 00:00:58.42\00:01:00.76 to the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives to pray, 00:01:00.79\00:01:04.99 often with His disciples. 00:01:05.03\00:01:07.16 And, of course, the most famous occasion 00:01:07.20\00:01:09.76 was on that night when Jesus struggled 00:01:09.80\00:01:13.13 with the fact that He was going to die. 00:01:13.17\00:01:15.80 We don't know what anguish went through His heart, 00:01:15.84\00:01:18.94 went through His soul, but we do know that 00:01:18.97\00:01:22.01 He made a decision there 00:01:22.04\00:01:24.05 that has repercussions for eternity. 00:01:24.08\00:01:26.45 And we're so thankful for that decision. 00:01:26.48\00:01:29.05 Of course, this garden today 00:01:29.08\00:01:30.99 looks more romanticized with beautiful flowers. 00:01:31.02\00:01:34.26 Back then I imagined it was a much rugged, 00:01:34.29\00:01:36.59 much more rugged, rough look. 00:01:36.62\00:01:38.53 When Jesus' disciples couldn't stay awake 00:01:38.56\00:01:41.53 to keep praying with Jesus. 00:01:41.56\00:01:43.83 And I've wondered would I have done any better 00:01:43.87\00:01:46.43 under those circumstances, 00:01:46.47\00:01:48.40 under that sort of pressure, 00:01:48.44\00:01:50.14 but whatever it was Jesus was there alone 00:01:50.17\00:01:53.38 in the garden with the Father. 00:01:53.41\00:01:55.88 Well, the good news is that yes, 00:01:55.91\00:01:57.85 Jesus died but He was resurrected 00:01:57.88\00:02:00.12 and that is what now empowers our mission. 00:02:00.15\00:02:03.25 And on today's program, 00:02:03.28\00:02:04.62 we'll be taking you all around the world 00:02:04.65\00:02:06.39 to see mission in action. 00:02:06.42\00:02:07.99 First up, let's travel to Brazil 00:02:08.02\00:02:10.09 and meet a little church planter 00:02:10.13\00:02:12.09 traveling in a canoe. 00:02:12.13\00:02:13.46 If you want to get anywhere in northern Brazil, 00:02:33.35\00:02:35.95 you need to be comfortable on a boat. 00:02:35.98\00:02:37.95 It can be a large ferry carrying lots of people, 00:02:37.99\00:02:40.69 cars and trucks or as small as a canoe. 00:02:40.72\00:02:44.03 Water travel is a way of life 00:02:44.06\00:02:45.89 along the rivers of the North Brazil Union 00:02:45.93\00:02:48.00 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:02:48.03\00:02:50.23 This area of Brazil has seen tremendous growth 00:02:50.27\00:02:53.13 over the past few years. 00:02:53.17\00:02:54.74 And not all of it has taken place 00:02:54.77\00:02:56.40 in the large churches and the big cities. 00:02:56.44\00:02:58.94 In some very remote areas 00:02:58.97\00:03:01.01 people are hearing the good news of Jesus 00:03:01.04\00:03:03.45 and His love and forgiveness. 00:03:03.48\00:03:05.61 Lives are being changed 00:03:05.65\00:03:07.25 and people are being reached all along the water. 00:03:07.28\00:03:10.32 Vitoria seems like any active 10-year-old girl. 00:03:33.81\00:03:37.08 She loves to spend time 00:03:37.11\00:03:38.45 with her parents and Brother Daniel. 00:03:38.48\00:03:40.62 She even has a pet Toucan, name Samson. 00:03:40.65\00:03:43.49 Yet Victoria has done 00:03:43.52\00:03:44.85 something most young girls haven't done. 00:03:44.89\00:03:47.52 She has planted a small group 00:03:47.56\00:03:49.22 that meets every week to study the Bible. 00:03:49.26\00:03:52.16 One day a week Vitoria climbs into her small canoe 00:03:52.19\00:03:55.43 and paddles her way up the river 00:03:55.46\00:03:57.03 that her family lives on. 00:03:57.07\00:03:58.83 The river is part of the Amazon River Basin 00:03:58.87\00:04:01.74 which covers this part of Northern Brazil 00:04:01.77\00:04:03.97 like a million slithering snakes. 00:04:04.01\00:04:06.68 With skill and determination, 00:04:06.71\00:04:08.51 she makes her way up river to the houses of friends 00:04:08.54\00:04:11.51 that she picks up to take to the Bible study. 00:04:11.55\00:04:14.12 Vitoria explains why she's willing to navigate 00:04:14.15\00:04:16.95 such a big river in such a small boat. 00:04:16.99\00:04:19.39 I had to take a canoe 00:04:24.89\00:04:26.43 because I had no way of going in a bigger boat. 00:04:26.46\00:04:29.33 I'm too small, so I had to go with the canoe. 00:04:29.36\00:04:33.54 Sometimes her brother comes along to help out. 00:04:33.57\00:04:36.57 And when the canoe is full, 00:04:36.60\00:04:38.07 they make their way to a path 00:04:38.11\00:04:39.74 that leads them into the jungle. 00:04:39.77\00:04:42.21 They walk on top of fallen logs 00:04:42.24\00:04:44.68 trying not to fall off into the thick mud 00:04:44.71\00:04:46.82 that covers the forest floor. 00:04:46.85\00:04:49.08 They finally come to a small hut 00:04:49.12\00:04:51.19 on stilts that overlooks another outlet of the river. 00:04:51.22\00:04:55.12 This is the home of another friend 00:04:55.16\00:04:57.26 who has offered to host the Bible studies 00:04:57.29\00:04:59.49 as long as he's allowed to attend as well. 00:04:59.53\00:05:02.40 The young people start with prayer 00:05:02.43\00:05:04.40 and quickly open the Small Groups magazine 00:05:04.43\00:05:06.77 produced by the South American division 00:05:06.80\00:05:09.07 to use as a study guide. 00:05:09.10\00:05:10.84 They also use the Sabbath School lesson 00:05:10.87\00:05:12.61 to guide their studies. 00:05:12.64\00:05:14.44 After a discussion on the topic of the lesson, 00:05:14.48\00:05:16.91 they sing songs and close with a prayer. 00:05:16.95\00:05:20.52 Vitoria gives a simple reason 00:05:20.55\00:05:22.45 for wanting to tell her friends about Jesus. 00:05:22.48\00:05:24.65 Because I want to be in heaven with them. 00:05:29.12\00:05:32.19 Three of Vitoria's friends have been baptized 00:05:32.23\00:05:34.83 because of her witness, 00:05:34.86\00:05:36.26 and they are inviting more friends 00:05:36.30\00:05:38.07 to their weekly lessons. 00:05:38.10\00:05:40.04 If a young child is willing to brave 00:05:40.07\00:05:42.00 a big river to share her faith with her friends, 00:05:42.04\00:05:44.97 just imagine what we all can do 00:05:45.01\00:05:46.88 to help spread the gospel around the world. 00:05:46.91\00:05:49.34 All we need is a little faith, courage, 00:05:49.38\00:05:52.05 and the work of the Holy Spirit. 00:05:52.08\00:05:53.85 And we can do wonders in Jesus name 00:05:53.88\00:05:56.58 just like a little girl up on the Amazon River. 00:05:56.62\00:05:59.29 The purpose of the Global Mission pioneer program 00:06:02.32\00:06:04.56 is to start new groups of believers 00:06:04.59\00:06:06.80 in new areas or among new people groups. 00:06:06.83\00:06:08.76 And the idea is to have a pioneer 00:06:08.80\00:06:11.13 from within that culture. 00:06:11.17\00:06:12.57 They know the language, they know the people. 00:06:12.60\00:06:14.67 But that's not always possible 00:06:14.70\00:06:16.04 because there's parts of the world where, 00:06:16.07\00:06:17.94 of course, we don't have enough Adventist believers 00:06:17.97\00:06:20.24 if we have any at all. 00:06:20.28\00:06:21.61 And that's the case 00:06:21.64\00:06:22.98 where my guest today is working. 00:06:23.01\00:06:25.78 And you came here from your home country 00:06:25.81\00:06:29.25 many, many miles away. 00:06:29.28\00:06:30.89 And I'm wondering, 00:06:30.92\00:06:32.25 what was the purpose for your coming? 00:06:32.29\00:06:33.62 What motivated you to come here? 00:06:33.66\00:06:35.99 Well, the special thing I was motivated is 00:06:36.02\00:06:40.40 because my love for the mission, 00:06:40.43\00:06:43.80 my love for God because I received many things 00:06:43.83\00:06:47.60 from God and I decided to serve Him. 00:06:47.64\00:06:50.44 Okay, so you were serving as a pastor 00:06:50.47\00:06:52.11 in your home country. 00:06:52.14\00:06:53.48 How did your family react when you said, 00:06:53.51\00:06:56.14 "I want to go to Middle East North Africa?" 00:06:56.18\00:06:59.68 You know, all the people around me, 00:06:59.71\00:07:02.85 they were surprised because it was a hard decision. 00:07:02.88\00:07:08.62 I talked to my father and my mom. 00:07:08.66\00:07:11.79 And they said, "Okay, 00:07:11.83\00:07:13.43 if it the wishes of God, you can go. 00:07:13.46\00:07:17.40 For us it's not easy, 00:07:17.43\00:07:18.77 but we know that God will be with you wherever you go." 00:07:18.80\00:07:23.34 Wonderful. 00:07:23.37\00:07:24.71 So you came here different language, 00:07:24.74\00:07:28.14 different culture, 00:07:28.18\00:07:29.51 different climate, different environment, 00:07:29.54\00:07:31.48 what were the major challenges that you have faced? 00:07:31.51\00:07:36.18 Yeah, at the beginning was a little bit hard 00:07:36.22\00:07:40.99 because all that you mentioned, all the stuff... 00:07:41.02\00:07:46.03 In the three first months, 00:07:46.06\00:07:50.27 it was hard. 00:07:50.30\00:07:52.93 Because, you know, you have to learn many things 00:07:52.97\00:07:57.27 about people, about culture, language especially, 00:07:57.31\00:08:02.64 I speak Spanish and English, 00:08:02.68\00:08:06.88 no French, no Arabic. 00:08:06.92\00:08:09.72 So it was so hard for me, 00:08:09.75\00:08:13.46 but I can support that. 00:08:13.49\00:08:16.56 Good, good, good. 00:08:16.59\00:08:17.93 So tell me what sort of activities 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.13 have you been involved in? 00:08:20.16\00:08:21.76 Yeah. 00:08:21.80\00:08:23.13 Normally, I try to make friends. 00:08:23.16\00:08:27.80 I go for gym or some places 00:08:27.84\00:08:31.97 and try to connect with them, 00:08:32.01\00:08:35.31 maybe exchange numbers. 00:08:35.34\00:08:38.75 Yeah, chatting by Facebook 00:08:38.78\00:08:41.75 or WhatsApp and, you know, 00:08:41.78\00:08:44.55 to know each other and to share experience. 00:08:44.59\00:08:48.66 So are you learning the language? 00:08:48.69\00:08:51.93 Yeah, I know I learned 00:08:51.96\00:08:55.13 some the basic parts of the language. 00:08:55.16\00:08:59.07 So tell me an experience 00:08:59.10\00:09:02.47 that you've had 00:09:02.50\00:09:03.84 where you've had the opportunity 00:09:03.87\00:09:05.21 to share with somebody? 00:09:05.24\00:09:08.58 Yeah, at the beginning it was... 00:09:08.61\00:09:11.11 What I expected was like 00:09:11.15\00:09:14.58 I can't share anything about my beliefs. 00:09:14.62\00:09:17.79 Right. 00:09:17.82\00:09:19.72 But after when I met some friends, they asked me, 00:09:19.75\00:09:24.66 you know, like who are you? 00:09:24.69\00:09:27.93 Where are you coming from? 00:09:27.96\00:09:30.27 Are you religious? 00:09:30.30\00:09:32.30 Do you have any religion? 00:09:32.33\00:09:34.50 And it was... 00:09:34.54\00:09:37.81 Yeah, it was so exciting for me. 00:09:37.84\00:09:39.31 And I continued to talk about the topic. 00:09:39.34\00:09:44.08 Finally, we talked about 00:09:44.11\00:09:49.38 the special thing 00:09:49.42\00:09:50.75 that we came to share, you know, about salvation, 00:09:50.79\00:09:54.36 about the kingdom of God, 00:09:54.39\00:09:56.32 about similar beliefs that we have with the local people. 00:09:56.36\00:10:02.30 But the most exciting thing for me was 00:10:02.33\00:10:05.50 when I talked with my friends 00:10:05.53\00:10:09.30 about the salvation that we have in Jesus. 00:10:09.34\00:10:12.57 It was the best part 00:10:12.61\00:10:14.24 and the best experience that I have and I had. 00:10:14.28\00:10:18.45 Yeah, I think it is so nice in this part of the world. 00:10:18.48\00:10:24.25 So when they asked you about your beliefs 00:10:24.29\00:10:27.09 and then you are able to share the story of salvation, 00:10:27.12\00:10:30.26 how did they react? 00:10:30.29\00:10:33.96 Well, the reaction of them, you know, 00:10:34.00\00:10:37.07 you have to explain them step by step. 00:10:37.10\00:10:40.64 Yes. 00:10:40.67\00:10:42.47 But at the beginning, I have to learn, 00:10:42.50\00:10:46.17 I have to know about what they believe 00:10:46.21\00:10:48.64 and learn about the book of them. 00:10:48.68\00:10:53.62 I can share about the book that I use, 00:10:53.65\00:10:57.95 it means the Bible. 00:10:57.99\00:10:59.62 But I study a lot of about the Quran 00:10:59.65\00:11:04.39 and learn the similarities 00:11:04.43\00:11:06.53 that we have between Quran and Bible. 00:11:06.56\00:11:09.30 And talk about with them 00:11:09.33\00:11:10.97 only about the Quran not about the Bible. 00:11:11.00\00:11:13.64 Right. 00:11:13.67\00:11:15.24 And they were surprised 00:11:15.27\00:11:16.60 because they don't study like I have studied. 00:11:16.64\00:11:20.08 And they say, "Whoa, really? 00:11:20.11\00:11:21.94 It says in the Quran. 00:11:21.98\00:11:23.51 In the Quran talk about Jesus?" 00:11:23.55\00:11:25.38 "Yes, look at this. Here is a verse." 00:11:25.41\00:11:27.45 Yeah. "Read it.
