Welcome back to Buenos Aires. 00:00:11.51\00:00:13.38 Behind me is La Casa Rosada, 00:00:13.41\00:00:15.98 which is the seat of the executive branch 00:00:16.01\00:00:18.88 of the Argentinean government. 00:00:18.91\00:00:20.92 Next up, Uncle Homer tells a story 00:00:20.95\00:00:23.15 of a science teacher 00:00:23.18\00:00:24.59 working in a very sensitive area 00:00:24.62\00:00:26.49 of the world. 00:00:26.52\00:00:27.86 I'm a biology major, not a theology major, 00:00:30.73\00:00:35.03 but I've never used the biology 00:00:35.06\00:00:37.07 that I took in college, except for twice. 00:00:37.10\00:00:40.54 Once when I was a principal of a small 10-grade school 00:00:40.57\00:00:43.81 where I also had to teach history and math 00:00:43.84\00:00:46.84 and Bible and PE and everything else. 00:00:46.88\00:00:49.68 And once when I needed a visa to a country 00:00:49.71\00:00:52.21 that wouldn't allow people with a theology major in 00:00:52.25\00:00:55.78 because I had a biology major, 00:00:55.82\00:00:57.59 I was able to get a visa, and go in, 00:00:57.62\00:00:59.82 they thought surely a biology major 00:00:59.85\00:01:01.82 would be no problem. 00:01:01.86\00:01:03.83 But I have a friend, in 00:01:03.86\00:01:05.59 fact, many friends 00:01:05.63\00:01:06.96 but one I want to tell you about 00:01:07.00\00:01:08.33 I'm going to call him John. 00:01:08.36\00:01:09.96 John is also a science major. 00:01:10.00\00:01:13.20 And John, I'm amazed at the way that God is using his science, 00:01:13.23\00:01:18.87 as part of the way to share the gospel. 00:01:18.91\00:01:22.41 John has been hired as a science teacher 00:01:22.44\00:01:25.28 in a Muslim country. 00:01:25.31\00:01:27.35 It's a country that doesn't allow 00:01:27.38\00:01:29.32 church workers to come in. 00:01:29.35\00:01:31.92 In fact, this country regularly expels people 00:01:31.95\00:01:36.59 who they think are missionaries or working for the church. 00:01:36.62\00:01:40.96 But John has been hired by the government 00:01:41.00\00:01:43.57 to teach science at a public school, 00:01:43.60\00:01:45.83 at a public high school. 00:01:45.87\00:01:47.97 He teaches from a creationist perspective. 00:01:48.00\00:01:51.04 And that's thrilling to the Muslim parents, 00:01:51.07\00:01:53.64 they are amazed that there's a Christian 00:01:53.68\00:01:56.24 who believes that God created the world. 00:01:56.28\00:01:59.45 He also teaches health, 00:01:59.48\00:02:01.25 and many of the health principles 00:02:01.28\00:02:03.15 that he's teaching to the students, 00:02:03.18\00:02:05.12 they're also amazed at. 00:02:05.15\00:02:06.76 They thought all Christians drank alcohol 00:02:06.79\00:02:09.52 and ate pork. 00:02:09.56\00:02:10.89 And here's one that doesn't even smoke, 00:02:10.93\00:02:13.56 and he's teaching them that God wants their bodies 00:02:13.60\00:02:16.40 to be healthy and they have a responsibility 00:02:16.43\00:02:18.70 to keep them healthy. 00:02:18.73\00:02:20.34 Those students are going home 00:02:20.37\00:02:21.90 and telling their parents what they're learning 00:02:21.94\00:02:23.84 and the parents are thrilled to have this teacher there. 00:02:23.87\00:02:27.78 Many of the parents and students 00:02:27.81\00:02:30.11 have began to ask John deep serious questions. 00:02:30.15\00:02:34.25 All they start with questions like, 00:02:34.28\00:02:36.55 "Why don't you yell at us like the other teachers do? 00:02:36.58\00:02:39.69 Or why are you a vegetarian? 00:02:39.72\00:02:42.32 I want to be a vegetarian." 00:02:42.36\00:02:44.46 But they also ask questions like, 00:02:44.49\00:02:46.73 "What happens when somebody dies? 00:02:46.76\00:02:49.40 Or do you believe in the judgment?" 00:02:49.43\00:02:52.40 And little by little, 00:02:52.43\00:02:53.77 just by being his happy friendly, 00:02:53.80\00:02:55.70 loving self, 00:02:55.74\00:02:57.07 John is making an impact in that community. 00:02:57.11\00:03:00.74 Many of John's fellow teachers and other workers 00:03:00.78\00:03:04.18 there at the school 00:03:04.21\00:03:05.55 have become interested in this guy. 00:03:05.58\00:03:07.88 He's different than they are. 00:03:07.92\00:03:09.52 He's learned their language, he's teaching in Arabic, 00:03:09.55\00:03:14.09 but he also is different, 00:03:14.12\00:03:16.19 and they want to get to know him 00:03:16.22\00:03:17.59 and they invite him to go to eat with them. 00:03:17.63\00:03:19.89 Oh, that's quite a compliment in a culture 00:03:19.93\00:03:22.13 where going to eat with someone 00:03:22.16\00:03:23.67 is one of the best things you can do. 00:03:23.70\00:03:26.97 They want to get to know John. 00:03:27.00\00:03:28.97 They want to see what it is 00:03:29.00\00:03:30.54 that makes him different from everyone else. 00:03:30.57\00:03:33.88 You know, I'm thankful for your tithes 00:03:33.91\00:03:35.88 and mission offerings 00:03:35.91\00:03:37.25 that help to give John his training 00:03:37.28\00:03:40.38 as a scientist 00:03:40.42\00:03:42.18 that he can now use as a way 00:03:42.22\00:03:44.79 to impact people in this country. 00:03:44.82\00:03:47.59 John is a tentmaker like the Apostle Paul. 00:03:47.62\00:03:50.66 Oh, he doesn't make tents out of canvas, 00:03:50.69\00:03:54.16 he teaches science, 00:03:54.20\00:03:55.86 but John is using his science teaching 00:03:55.90\00:03:58.60 as a way to impact the lives 00:03:58.63\00:04:00.97 of his students and fellow workers. 00:04:01.00\00:04:03.74 If you're interested in learning more about 00:04:03.77\00:04:05.97 being a tentmaker, 00:04:06.01\00:04:07.61 go to te.AdventistMission.org. 00:04:07.64\00:04:11.85 Next up, let's travel to Northern Asia 00:04:11.88\00:04:13.85 and see an animated mission story 00:04:13.88\00:04:16.12 from that region. 00:04:16.15\00:04:18.02 If you really pray, God will answer your prayer. 00:04:18.05\00:04:20.89 Ival is a 10-year-old boy who lives in Mongolia. 00:04:26.09\00:04:29.76 When he was five years old, 00:04:29.80\00:04:31.23 he moved from Mongolia to the Philippines, 00:04:31.27\00:04:33.74 his father needed to study in an Adventist University 00:04:33.77\00:04:36.30 in the Philippines, 00:04:36.34\00:04:37.67 Ival, also needed to study, 00:04:37.71\00:04:39.44 so his parents sent him to the first grade. 00:04:39.47\00:04:42.34 School was very difficult for him. 00:04:42.38\00:04:44.38 The teacher and all the other children 00:04:44.41\00:04:46.31 spoke in English. 00:04:46.35\00:04:47.68 Ival understood very little English. 00:04:47.72\00:04:50.39 After school, the boys teased him 00:04:50.42\00:04:52.75 as he waited for his ride home. 00:04:52.79\00:04:54.82 "You can't do anything," one boy said. 00:04:54.86\00:04:57.73 "You can't even write," said another boy. 00:04:57.76\00:05:00.80 "Go to kindergarten." 00:05:00.83\00:05:02.33 When he heard these hurtful words 00:05:02.36\00:05:04.30 Ival ran back into the school 00:05:04.33\00:05:06.17 and hid behind the door of his classroom. 00:05:06.20\00:05:08.57 He didn't want to cry in front of the other children. 00:05:08.60\00:05:11.41 That night, when Ival went to bed, 00:05:11.44\00:05:13.74 he wanted to kneel and pray to God for help, 00:05:13.78\00:05:15.74 but he was afraid 00:05:15.78\00:05:17.11 that if his mother saw him praying, 00:05:17.15\00:05:18.71 she would ask him what he was praying about. 00:05:18.75\00:05:21.22 Ival didn't want his mother to worry, 00:05:21.25\00:05:23.69 so he woke up in the middle of the night 00:05:23.72\00:05:25.82 when his parents were sound asleep 00:05:25.85\00:05:28.02 and quietly prayed to God. 00:05:28.06\00:05:30.33 "Please let me go to another school 00:05:30.36\00:05:32.69 and make friends," he prayed. 00:05:32.73\00:05:35.06 Ival prayed nearly every night for several months, 00:05:35.10\00:05:38.37 then his parents suddenly decided to send him 00:05:38.40\00:05:41.04 to a different school. 00:05:41.07\00:05:42.40 The children at his new school were kind. 00:05:45.37\00:05:48.24 They helped him learn to speak English. 00:05:48.28\00:05:50.91 When he hurt his leg playing soccer, 00:05:50.95\00:05:53.01 the other boys helped him walk home. 00:05:53.05\00:05:55.32 Ival was so happy 00:05:55.35\00:05:56.85 that God had answered his prayer 00:05:56.89\00:05:58.55 about going to a new school. 00:05:58.59\00:06:01.19 Before he prayed about his school troubles, 00:06:01.22\00:06:03.46 Ival had never asked God for anything. 00:06:03.49\00:06:06.36 He had even wondered whether God really exists. 00:06:06.39\00:06:09.76 Ival went to church every Sabbath, 00:06:09.80\00:06:12.27 but he wondered how God could create the world 00:06:12.30\00:06:14.60 with just His words. 00:06:14.64\00:06:16.50 But ever since his prayers were answered, 00:06:16.54\00:06:18.77 he believes that God is real. 00:06:18.81\00:06:21.78 Ival is now in the fifth grade, 00:06:21.81\00:06:24.15 and he lives back in his home country 00:06:24.18\00:06:25.98 of Mongolia, 00:06:26.01\00:06:27.35 but he has never forgotten 00:06:27.38\00:06:28.88 how God answered his prayers. 00:06:28.92\00:06:31.69 Ival has many friends in Mongolia 00:06:31.72\00:06:34.36 that many of them come from families 00:06:34.39\00:06:36.22 who don't know about God. 00:06:36.26\00:06:38.13 Please pray for the only Adventist school 00:06:38.16\00:06:40.46 in Mongolia, 00:06:40.50\00:06:41.83 your mission offerings have helped this school grow, 00:06:41.86\00:06:45.33 and teach more and more students 00:06:45.37\00:06:47.44 about God. 00:06:47.47\00:06:48.80 God maker of heaven and earth 00:07:20.74\00:07:27.71 Maker of the universe 00:07:30.75\00:07:37.22 You are everlasting
