Animated mission stories the city of Buenos Aires 00:00:10.87\00:00:14.24 and a story from Uncle Homer coming up next. 00:00:14.28\00:00:16.91 Hello and welcome to Mission 360. 00:00:41.27\00:00:43.10 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:43.14\00:00:44.57 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:44.61\00:00:46.24 from Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. 00:00:46.27\00:00:49.88 Now in greater Buenos Aires, 00:00:49.91\00:00:52.21 we have some 12 million people living, 00:00:52.25\00:00:54.75 which means that more than one 00:00:54.78\00:00:56.45 in four Argentinians live in this city. 00:00:56.48\00:00:59.42 So it's a tremendous mission challenge 00:00:59.45\00:01:01.56 in this growing city of Buenos Aires. 00:01:01.59\00:01:05.16 Today's program is specifically focused on children, 00:01:05.19\00:01:08.86 and there'll be some animated mission stories. 00:01:08.90\00:01:11.30 When we think about animation, 00:01:11.33\00:01:12.67 we often think about Walt Disney, 00:01:12.70\00:01:14.87 but the first animation feature movie 00:01:14.90\00:01:17.84 was actually made here in Argentina, back in 1917. 00:01:17.87\00:01:22.64 And the director was satirizing the corruption 00:01:22.68\00:01:26.51 and the lack of morals of the time. 00:01:26.55\00:01:28.82 Well, on today's program, 00:01:28.85\00:01:30.19 we'll take you all around the globe 00:01:30.22\00:01:31.72 to see frontline mission. 00:01:31.75\00:01:33.12 First up, let's travel to North America. 00:01:33.15\00:01:35.36 I am the second-grade teacher here in Ebeye, 00:01:41.96\00:01:44.63 at Ebeye SDA school. 00:01:44.67\00:01:46.63 I teach all subjects for second grade. 00:01:46.67\00:01:49.34 Come to her house. 00:01:49.37\00:01:51.21 To go where? 00:01:51.24\00:01:52.57 To her house! 00:01:52.61\00:01:53.94 To her house. 00:01:53.98\00:01:55.31 Ebeye is a small island in the Pacific Ocean. 00:01:55.34\00:01:58.15 It's part of a chain called the Marshall Islands. 00:01:58.18\00:02:01.05 More than 15,000 people live on this small piece of land 00:02:01.08\00:02:04.79 and half of the population is under the age of 18. 00:02:04.82\00:02:08.42 Ebeye is very small, very populated, 00:02:08.46\00:02:13.40 lots of children running around. 00:02:13.43\00:02:15.26 They are very friendly. 00:02:15.30\00:02:16.63 They will tell you, "Hi, yokwe." 00:02:16.67\00:02:18.70 Want to touch you, want to touch your hair, 00:02:18.73\00:02:20.54 give you a hug. 00:02:20.57\00:02:22.17 And then also, there's not that many trees, 00:02:22.20\00:02:24.44 not that many flowers, 00:02:24.47\00:02:25.81 just a lot of buildings because, you know, 00:02:25.84\00:02:28.08 such a high population. 00:02:28.11\00:02:29.88 Ebeye Seventh-day Adventist School 00:02:29.91\00:02:31.61 plays an important role on the island. 00:02:31.65\00:02:33.82 It educates children from preschool to grade 12. 00:02:33.85\00:02:37.72 The school relies heavily 00:02:37.75\00:02:39.35 on Adventist volunteers to function. 00:02:39.39\00:02:41.76 Student missionaries, especially, 00:02:41.79\00:02:43.73 come every year to fill the empty teaching positions. 00:02:43.76\00:02:47.30 Elisa was a hairstylist in the United States, 00:02:47.33\00:02:50.03 but she believed God wanted something else 00:02:50.07\00:02:52.03 for her life. 00:02:52.07\00:02:53.40 So she began praying for direction. 00:02:53.44\00:02:55.80 Someone suggested that 00:02:55.84\00:02:57.17 she consider volunteering her time 00:02:57.21\00:02:58.81 for God's work. 00:02:58.84\00:03:00.61 I had no idea where Ebeye was 00:03:00.64\00:03:02.81 but there was an available opening, 00:03:02.84\00:03:05.05 so I applied, and I asked God to open the door 00:03:05.08\00:03:08.78 if I was supposed to go 00:03:08.82\00:03:10.15 or shut it if I was not supposed to. 00:03:10.19\00:03:12.39 Since she arrived, 00:03:12.42\00:03:13.76 Elisa has grown close to her students. 00:03:13.79\00:03:15.72 They frequently hug her 00:03:15.76\00:03:17.26 and want to spend time with her. 00:03:17.29\00:03:19.06 The bond she's formed with the people on the island 00:03:19.09\00:03:21.50 has motivated her 00:03:21.53\00:03:22.86 to put her best effort into her job. 00:03:22.90\00:03:25.53 But there have also been 00:03:25.57\00:03:26.90 major challenges to living abroad. 00:03:26.94\00:03:28.94 Since Ebeye is an isolated island, 00:03:28.97\00:03:31.54 getting fresh food here is infrequent, 00:03:31.57\00:03:34.04 and healthy living can be difficult. 00:03:34.08\00:03:36.34 So some of the struggles on Ebeye have been getting sick 00:03:36.38\00:03:39.78 and also not getting enough nutrition 00:03:39.81\00:03:42.05 just because the food is very different here. 00:03:42.08\00:03:43.49 There's not a lot of fresh produce. 00:03:43.52\00:03:45.29 So my first sickness was chikungunya. 00:03:45.32\00:03:47.62 It's a mosquito-borne virus. 00:03:47.66\00:03:49.72 And then I got a dislocated kneecap 00:03:49.76\00:03:53.63 from teaching the boys soccer. 00:03:53.66\00:03:55.93 And so that was a struggle. 00:03:55.96\00:03:57.60 I had to return to the US. 00:03:57.63\00:03:59.33 And when I had to return home from dislocating my kneecap, 00:03:59.37\00:04:02.77 I was very angry. 00:04:02.80\00:04:05.41 I felt guilty for leaving all my kids 00:04:05.44\00:04:07.68 and my fellow missionaries. 00:04:07.71\00:04:09.61 And I was angry at God. I blamed God for it. 00:04:09.64\00:04:11.68 And I told all my family, 00:04:11.71\00:04:13.05 "I'm never coming back to Ebeye." 00:04:13.08\00:04:15.28 And then I drifted away from God a little bit 00:04:15.32\00:04:18.82 and then I prayed. 00:04:18.85\00:04:20.19 I started praying. 00:04:20.22\00:04:21.56 "God, I need to come back to You. 00:04:21.59\00:04:23.09 Tell me what to do with my life. 00:04:23.12\00:04:24.46 I need my purpose. 00:04:24.49\00:04:25.83 I need to know what it is." 00:04:25.86\00:04:27.20 And as I prayed, God showed me 00:04:27.23\00:04:29.50 that I was supposed to come back to Ebeye 00:04:29.53\00:04:31.17 because in the first place, 00:04:31.20\00:04:32.53 who was the one that led me to Ebeye? 00:04:32.57\00:04:33.90 It was God. 00:04:33.94\00:04:35.50 When Elisa's knee was better, 00:04:35.54\00:04:37.41 she returned to Ebeye for another year of teaching. 00:04:37.44\00:04:40.38 She feels even more dedicated 00:04:40.41\00:04:42.14 and closer to the students than before. 00:04:42.18\00:04:44.71 What I like about being here is being able to provide 00:04:44.75\00:04:48.25 that kind of support for the children 00:04:48.28\00:04:50.49 and a nurturing experience for them. 00:04:50.52\00:04:53.76 And most of all is Jesus Christ, you know, 00:04:53.79\00:04:57.03 telling them about Jesus and His love, 00:04:57.06\00:04:59.63 and showing that love to them. 00:04:59.66\00:05:01.00 Not just telling them, but most importantly, you know, 00:05:01.03\00:05:03.77 showing it in my own life to them. 00:05:03.80\00:05:06.70 One of the biggest obstacles 00:05:06.74\00:05:08.57 the school faces is maintenance. 00:05:08.60\00:05:10.67 The salt concentration in the air is so high 00:05:10.71\00:05:13.27 that everything deteriorates at a fast pace. 00:05:13.31\00:05:16.41 Something that would normally last 20 years 00:05:16.44\00:05:18.45 in other parts of the world 00:05:18.48\00:05:19.91 might only last three years in Ebeye. 00:05:19.95\00:05:22.82 The staff and students are grateful 00:05:22.85\00:05:25.25 for your contributions to the 13th Sabbath Offerings. 00:05:25.29\00:05:29.36 Yes, most definitely the money is needed for our school. 00:05:29.39\00:05:33.29 There are many renovations that are ongoing, you know, 00:05:33.33\00:05:37.50 we constantly, with the saltwater, 00:05:37.53\00:05:39.33 it affects the building structure, 00:05:39.37\00:05:41.44 and then also right now we have termites in the wood. 00:05:41.47\00:05:44.21 So I think we're trying to turn the school into mostly, 00:05:44.24\00:05:47.14 I think, concrete so we don't have the termites. 00:05:47.18\00:05:49.94 So, yeah, there's a lot to do. 00:05:49.98\00:05:52.28 And things are, yeah, they're always falling apart, 00:05:52.31\00:05:54.48 just again with the weather, 00:05:54.52\00:05:56.12 the saltwater, and just a lot of kids, 00:05:56.15\00:05:59.55 you know, maybe being hard on the school. 00:05:59.59\00:06:02.92 Please consider how you can help 00:06:02.96\00:06:04.56 the Ebeye Seventh-day Adventist School 00:06:04.59\00:06:06.59 in the Marshall Islands, 00:06:06.63\00:06:07.96 as well as other schools throughout 00:06:08.00\00:06:09.60 the North American Division. 00:06:09.63\00:06:11.40 Education has a huge impact on future generations. 00:06:11.43\00:06:15.50 Thank you for supporting the mission 00:06:15.54\00:06:17.87 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church! 00:06:17.91\00:06:23.38 My guest is Yanina who is a One Year 00:06:23.41\00:06:26.28 in Mission volunteer 00:06:26.31\00:06:28.68 here in the City of Lujan in Argentina. 00:06:28.72\00:06:31.62 Now this is a city of more than 100,000 people 00:06:31.65\00:06:34.42 where there are no 00:06:34.46\00:06:35.79 Seventh-day Adventists believers, 00:06:35.82\00:06:37.16 no churches, and we are standing 00:06:37.19\00:06:39.03 in a Center of Influence that 00:06:39.06\00:06:41.76 is making a difference in the community. 00:06:41.80\00:06:44.77 Thank you so much for joining me. 00:06:44.80\00:06:46.47 Now One Year in Mission what exactly is that?
