Welcome back to the Old City of Jerusalem, 00:00:12.91\00:00:14.84 and I'm walking along the Via Dolorosa, 00:00:14.88\00:00:17.31 which according to Christian tradition, 00:00:17.35\00:00:19.81 is the pathway that Jesus took walking to Golgotha. 00:00:19.85\00:00:25.02 And over the centuries, 00:00:25.05\00:00:26.45 various Christian pilgrims have come 00:00:26.49\00:00:28.86 along the Via Dolorosa and they stopped 00:00:28.89\00:00:30.79 at what they call Stations of the Cross. 00:00:30.83\00:00:33.63 This is station number nine. 00:00:33.66\00:00:35.13 And according to the tradition, 00:00:35.16\00:00:36.53 Jesus stopped only three times on His way to Golgotha. 00:00:36.56\00:00:41.74 Well, the important thing is that Jesus 00:00:41.77\00:00:44.57 did go to Golgotha and He died for us. 00:00:44.61\00:00:47.01 And that makes all the difference. 00:00:47.04\00:00:48.44 And that's what inspires our mission today. 00:00:48.48\00:00:51.31 Well, next up, we have a story with Homer Trecartin. 00:00:51.35\00:00:54.95 Finally I found you, 00:00:54.98\00:00:57.09 the mother in the long black burqa 00:00:57.12\00:00:59.09 was excited as she came up to our Adventist nurse. 00:00:59.12\00:01:02.59 Do you remember me? 00:01:02.62\00:01:04.49 Our Adventist nurse was far from her home country 00:01:04.53\00:01:07.56 working in a difficult Middle Eastern country. 00:01:07.60\00:01:11.37 She was working as a nurse in a hospital there. 00:01:11.40\00:01:15.60 But she looked carefully at the mother 00:01:15.64\00:01:17.67 and she didn't recognize her. 00:01:17.71\00:01:19.34 She didn't recognize the three children with her. 00:01:19.37\00:01:22.64 No, she said, "I'm sorry, I don't recognize you." 00:01:22.68\00:01:26.72 Well, the mother said, "Five years ago, 00:01:26.75\00:01:29.52 I came into that other hospital 00:01:29.55\00:01:31.15 where you were working with a baby 00:01:31.19\00:01:32.79 that was screaming constantly." 00:01:32.82\00:01:35.62 "Oh, yes," our Adventist nurse said, 00:01:35.66\00:01:38.66 "Now I remember you." 00:01:38.69\00:01:40.96 The mother said, 00:01:41.00\00:01:42.33 "Nobody could get the baby to be quiet." 00:01:42.36\00:01:44.77 And the nurse remembered. 00:01:44.80\00:01:46.33 Nobody could get the baby to be quiet. 00:01:46.37\00:01:48.74 The doctors couldn't figure out 00:01:48.77\00:01:50.31 anything that was wrong with him 00:01:50.34\00:01:52.11 but he screamed constantly day and night. 00:01:52.14\00:01:56.08 Finally, one night when she was on duty, 00:01:56.11\00:01:58.31 she had picked him up and been trying to hold him 00:01:58.35\00:02:01.18 and get him to be quiet 00:02:01.22\00:02:02.55 and without even thinking about it, 00:02:02.58\00:02:05.09 she had started humming a little song 00:02:05.12\00:02:07.02 she used to hum to her own children. 00:02:07.06\00:02:09.52 And instantly the baby got quiet. 00:02:16.00\00:02:18.83 The nurse was startled. 00:02:18.87\00:02:20.20 She stopped humming and looked at him 00:02:20.24\00:02:21.87 and he started to scream again. 00:02:21.90\00:02:23.30 So she started humming, and he got quiet. 00:02:23.34\00:02:26.11 All night long, she carried him around 00:02:26.14\00:02:28.24 with her humming softly, Jesus loves me. 00:02:28.28\00:02:32.21 And all night long, the hospital had peace 00:02:32.25\00:02:35.22 for the first time in days. 00:02:35.25\00:02:37.49 And the next evening when she came on duty again, 00:02:37.52\00:02:40.16 the entire hospital staff was talking about it. 00:02:40.19\00:02:43.16 What did you do? 00:02:43.19\00:02:44.56 How did you get that baby to be quiet, 00:02:44.59\00:02:46.90 nobody else can get him to be quiet. 00:02:46.93\00:02:49.90 Well, the nurse didn't want to say 00:02:49.93\00:02:51.37 what she did. 00:02:51.40\00:02:53.23 But she picked him up and started humming, 00:02:53.27\00:02:55.24 and again he got quiet. 00:02:55.27\00:02:57.51 A couple more days went by and nobody 00:02:57.54\00:02:59.84 except her could get him to be quiet. 00:02:59.87\00:03:01.81 And as they were checking him out of the hospital, 00:03:01.84\00:03:04.35 sending him home because there was nothing 00:03:04.38\00:03:06.31 more they could do. 00:03:06.35\00:03:07.72 His mother came up to our nurse 00:03:07.75\00:03:09.58 and said with fear on her face, "You've got to help me, please, 00:03:09.62\00:03:14.79 I don't know what to do. 00:03:14.82\00:03:16.46 Nobody else can get this baby to be quiet. 00:03:16.49\00:03:20.00 I noticed that when he's quiet, 00:03:20.03\00:03:22.50 you're humming a little song to him. 00:03:22.53\00:03:24.77 Would you be willing to sing that song into my cell phone 00:03:24.80\00:03:28.34 so that I could play it for him at home?" 00:03:28.37\00:03:31.11 Now our nurse was afraid because this was a country 00:03:31.14\00:03:34.28 where it's illegal to share your faith. 00:03:34.31\00:03:37.68 But finally after much begging, 00:03:37.71\00:03:40.02 she went into a back corner and fearfully saying, 00:03:40.05\00:03:42.75 Jesus loves me this I know. 00:03:42.78\00:03:47.12 And then she expected to get arrested 00:03:47.16\00:03:49.09 that she left the hospital 00:03:49.12\00:03:50.69 because that lady's husband was a policeman. 00:03:50.73\00:03:55.10 She went home that night. 00:03:55.13\00:03:57.27 Nothing happened. 00:03:57.30\00:03:58.63 She thought the next morning surely they'll arrest me 00:03:58.67\00:04:00.84 as I come back into the hospital 00:04:00.87\00:04:02.47 but nothing happened. 00:04:02.50\00:04:04.37 Day after day went by month after month, 00:04:04.41\00:04:06.68 she forgot all about the lady and her baby. 00:04:06.71\00:04:09.41 Until now, 00:04:09.44\00:04:10.78 here they were standing in front of her, 00:04:10.81\00:04:13.18 a cute little five-year-old boy 00:04:13.21\00:04:15.18 and the mother said he's a sweet little boy. 00:04:15.22\00:04:17.55 And it's all because of that song 00:04:17.59\00:04:19.35 that you sang him. 00:04:19.39\00:04:20.72 But I've got a problem. 00:04:20.76\00:04:22.09 I lost my cell phone. 00:04:22.12\00:04:23.69 Would you sing it again into my new phone 00:04:23.73\00:04:25.93 so that I can play it for his little brother and sister? 00:04:25.96\00:04:29.33 Our nurse gladly this time went in the back 00:04:29.36\00:04:32.27 and saying Jesus loves me. 00:04:32.30\00:04:33.67 And this time she also saying 00:04:33.70\00:04:35.84 Jesus loves the little children, 00:04:35.87\00:04:39.07 all the children of the world. 00:04:39.11\00:04:41.88 You know, it gives me goosebumps 00:04:41.91\00:04:43.38 to think that in a country where she was working, 00:04:43.41\00:04:47.38 in a country where it's illegal for women to drive, 00:04:47.42\00:04:50.15 a country where there's regular public beheadings, 00:04:50.19\00:04:53.42 in a country where it's illegal to share 00:04:53.46\00:04:55.59 your faith, a policeman's family has been listening 00:04:55.62\00:05:00.23 for five years to a little song about Jesus loving them, 00:05:00.26\00:05:04.27 and the Bible telling them. 00:05:04.30\00:05:07.54 This nurse is a tentmaker. 00:05:07.57\00:05:09.97 She doesn't work for the church. 00:05:10.01\00:05:12.47 But she uses her job and her life 00:05:12.51\00:05:15.38 as a witness for Jesus. 00:05:15.41\00:05:17.78 Your tithes and mission offerings 00:05:17.81\00:05:19.31 have been helping to support the work in that country 00:05:19.35\00:05:21.78 for several years. 00:05:21.82\00:05:23.72 But it takes more than money. 00:05:23.75\00:05:25.55 It takes people, people like that nurse 00:05:25.59\00:05:28.56 that are willing to go to a difficult country 00:05:28.59\00:05:31.23 and let their lives and their work 00:05:31.26\00:05:33.50 be a witness for Jesus. 00:05:33.53\00:05:35.53 If you'd like to know more about being a tentmaker, 00:05:35.56\00:05:38.37 go to our website, te.adventistmission.org 00:05:38.40\00:05:42.40 for more information. 00:05:42.44\00:05:44.27 Behind me is the Eastern Gate of Old Jerusalem, 00:05:44.31\00:05:47.71 also known as the Golden Gate. 00:05:47.74\00:05:50.08 And as you can see, 00:05:50.11\00:05:51.75 it is now rolled up and it was actually closed 00:05:51.78\00:05:54.62 back in Medieval Times. 00:05:54.65\00:05:56.45 Lot of traditions associated with this gate. 00:05:56.48\00:05:59.29 Some have said that 00:05:59.32\00:06:00.66 this is where the Shekinah Glory 00:06:00.69\00:06:02.02 would appear through this gate. 00:06:02.06\00:06:03.89 And many Christians believe that this was the gate through 00:06:03.93\00:06:08.20 which Jesus entered Jerusalem on the donkey 00:06:08.23\00:06:11.17 has that tradition as well. 00:06:11.20\00:06:13.03 And some think that this could be the Gate Beautiful 00:06:13.07\00:06:16.47 that is referred to in Acts 3, all fascinating. 00:06:16.50\00:06:19.64 Next up, let's learn more about mission in North America. 00:06:19.67\00:06:22.91 For me, in my own spiritual experience, 00:06:29.08\00:06:31.69 I have seen God work in so many incredible ways. 00:06:31.72\00:06:35.79 I would only say that I've been a real Christian 00:06:35.82\00:06:38.26 for the past few years. 00:06:38.29\00:06:39.63 And a lot of that is due to my experience 00:06:39.66\00:06:41.00 being out here in Palau. 00:06:41.03\00:06:42.36 For those who have never been here before, 00:06:48.77\00:06:50.47 Palau, it's like nature, 00:06:50.51\00:06:54.14 just times 100 of anything you've ever experienced before. 00:06:54.18\00:06:57.45 It's so pristine, it's so calm, it's so peaceful. 00:06:57.48\00:07:01.85 And the people are so loving and they're so giving. 00:07:01.88\00:07:04.15 For me personally, I feel more at home here 00:07:05.32\00:07:07.66 in Palau sometimes than I do even back home 00:07:07.69\00:07:09.52 in the States where I'm from. 00:07:09.56\00:07:12.46 I've been here in Palau for four years. 00:07:12.49\00:07:15.23 And I'm currently the chaplain of both elementary school 00:07:15.26\00:07:18.53 and the high school, while teaching junior 00:07:18.57\00:07:20.87 and senior Bible at the high school. 00:07:20.90\00:07:22.87 Not only is Palau such a beautiful place 00:07:22.90\00:07:25.14 to look at and to be in, but for me, 00:07:25.17\00:07:27.54 especially the thing that keeps me coming back 00:07:27.58\00:07:29.71 has always been the kids. 00:07:29.74\00:07:31.15 I love them and I love the interactions 00:07:31.18\00:07:33.11 that we have. 00:07:33.15\00:07:34.48 And I love getting to see them grow in a spiritual way. 00:07:34.52\00:07:36.55 We have a lot of great spiritual emphasis programs 00:07:48.96\00:07:52.17 with the school, and especially as chaplain 00:07:52.20\00:07:54.04 I've been able to see students really enjoy getting to know 00:07:54.07\00:07:56.71 what the Bible has to say, and to have bravery 00:07:56.74\00:07:59.31 when it comes to asking questions about the Bible 00:07:59.34\00:08:01.58 so that they can learn more about 00:08:01.61\00:08:02.94 what it actually has to say. 00:08:02.98\00:08:04.31 Some of the challenges that can come up 00:08:11.82\00:08:14.02 from being here, 00:08:14.06\00:08:15.39 one of the biggest is definitely communicating 00:08:15.42\00:08:17.23 with people back home. 00:08:17.26\00:08:18.59 It's hard to stay connected. 00:08:18.63\00:08:21.20 And you're kind of on your own on an island. 00:08:21.23\00:08:23.73 And it can be hard sometimes to find people 00:08:23.77\00:08:26.07 you can trust when it comes to furthering 00:08:26.10\00:08:29.10 your spiritual experience. 00:08:29.14\00:08:31.74 Seeing how God has led me and helped me make decisions 00:08:31.77\00:08:35.78 and the path he's putting me on for the future, 00:08:35.81\00:08:38.35 I can definitely see that He's in control out here. 00:08:38.38\00:08:40.95 I was scared to be the chaplain, 00:08:51.76\00:08:53.43 I didn't want that responsibility. 00:08:53.46\00:08:55.03 And things kind of ended up 00:08:55.06\00:08:57.07 that I was able to become the chaplain 00:08:57.10\00:09:00.30 for my second year coming back. 00:09:00.34\00:09:02.10 And I didn't think I was ready, 00:09:02.14\00:09:03.81 but I was ready to see what God could do through me 00:09:03.84\00:09:06.64 in that position. 00:09:06.68\00:09:08.51 The people out here are ready to hear the gospel. 00:09:08.54\00:09:11.15 There's just very few people 00:09:11.18\00:09:12.51 who have been willing to come out here and to serve. 00:09:12.55\00:09:15.08 Jesus found His greatest blessing in service 00:09:15.12\00:09:18.55 when He was here. 00:09:18.59\00:09:19.92 And if we want to figure out how to get closest to Him, 00:09:19.95\00:09:22.22 then our best bet is to go out 00:09:22.26\00:09:24.09 and serve the same way that He did. 00:09:24.13\00:09:25.76 If God calls me to stay longer, I wouldn't be opposed to it. 00:09:38.51\00:09:41.31 Well, thanks so much for joining us 00:09:59.96\00:10:01.46 today on Mission 360. 00:10:01.50\00:10:03.30 And I hope that you've been inspired 00:10:03.33\00:10:04.83 and challenged by what you've seen and heard. 00:10:04.87\00:10:07.80 The beautiful city of Jerusalem has so much 00:10:07.84\00:10:11.31 history and culture and religious significance. 00:10:11.34\00:10:15.21 And it's just an amazing thing to be able to realize 00:10:15.24\00:10:18.68 that so much that is so important 00:10:18.71\00:10:20.75 for the Christian faith happened right here. 00:10:20.78\00:10:22.88 I want to thank you for your continuing 00:10:22.92\00:10:25.35 participation with us in mission. 00:10:25.39\00:10:28.26 You may ask, how am I participating? 00:10:28.29\00:10:30.13 Well, we see you as a part of our team 00:10:30.16\00:10:32.73 because you are praying for mission, 00:10:32.76\00:10:34.63 you are supporting it financially 00:10:34.66\00:10:36.56 and you have been personally involved. 00:10:36.60\00:10:38.37 And I want to thank you so much for what you're doing. 00:10:38.40\00:10:40.80 It does make a difference for frontline mission workers 00:10:40.84\00:10:44.21 to know that there is a world church praying 00:10:44.24\00:10:46.57 for them that they are not alone. 00:10:46.61\00:10:48.58 As a small token of thanks, 00:10:48.61\00:10:49.94 I'd like to send you 00:10:49.98\00:10:51.31 this mission offering money box. 00:10:51.35\00:10:53.42 It's a terrific thing to just set up somewhere 00:10:53.45\00:10:55.28 at home or use it at the Sabbath school, 00:10:55.32\00:10:57.75 or anywhere where you want to teach 00:10:57.79\00:10:59.85 the value of consistently putting aside 00:10:59.89\00:11:03.56 some money to help support mission around the world, 00:11:03.59\00:11:06.09 and we'd be happy to send that to you for free 00:11:06.13\00:11:08.40 if you live in North America. 00:11:08.43\00:11:09.90 Well for Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause. 00:11:09.93\00:11:11.87 And I hope you can join me next time 00:11:11.90\00:11:13.94 right here on Mission 360. 00:11:13.97\00:11:16.10
