Welcome back to Philadelphia, 00:00:10.81\00:00:12.44 the city of brotherly love. 00:00:12.47\00:00:14.44 Next stop, we travel to another urban area, 00:00:14.48\00:00:17.05 the city of Jakarta 00:00:17.08\00:00:18.55 and learn about a center of influence. 00:00:18.58\00:00:22.35 Thank you, 00:00:22.38\00:00:23.72 we're here in the heart of Jakarta, Indonesia. 00:00:23.75\00:00:26.45 One of the major cities here in Asia, 00:00:26.49\00:00:28.89 and we are on the street where the cars are passing by. 00:00:28.92\00:00:31.99 With me is Arlaine and, Arlaine, we are... 00:00:32.03\00:00:35.50 you're part of a unique ministry here, 00:00:35.53\00:00:37.63 that's specifically working in a big city. 00:00:37.67\00:00:40.74 Can you tell us a little bit about 00:00:40.77\00:00:42.17 what you have been doing? 00:00:42.20\00:00:43.67 Okay, our ministry here, 00:00:43.71\00:00:45.47 actually and the first time 00:00:45.51\00:00:46.84 when we established the ministry, 00:00:46.88\00:00:49.24 it's called the Chinese Ministry Center Jakarta. 00:00:49.28\00:00:52.55 Actually our vision is how to proclaim 00:00:52.58\00:00:55.25 the Three Angels Message to the Chinese community 00:00:55.28\00:00:58.62 but later years until now, 00:00:58.65\00:01:01.92 we realize that God actually lead us to the city evangelism 00:01:01.96\00:01:07.06 and we can see that more and more 00:01:07.10\00:01:09.73 people of the city of Jakarta 00:01:09.76\00:01:11.47 coming here to study the health, 00:01:11.50\00:01:13.67 because we are using a health message 00:01:13.70\00:01:16.37 as our tools to evangelism to them. 00:01:16.40\00:01:19.31 Okay, so what exactly did you do to use 00:01:19.34\00:01:21.81 the health ministry church to reach people? 00:01:21.84\00:01:24.78 There is a various programs like radio program, 00:01:24.81\00:01:29.98 we have a talk show, health talk show 00:01:30.02\00:01:32.75 and also we have the health seminars. 00:01:32.79\00:01:35.76 We also have the, like the consultation 00:01:35.79\00:01:39.59 and healthy food festival like that cooking class, 00:01:39.63\00:01:43.60 healthy cooking class, 00:01:43.63\00:01:44.97 and we can see that the, you know, 00:01:45.00\00:01:48.24 this is where it attract people of Jakarta 00:01:48.27\00:01:51.54 because of the lifestyle 00:01:51.57\00:01:53.68 and disease coming from the bad lifestyle. 00:01:53.71\00:01:57.18 Now, we are standing in front of some place called Club Sehot 00:01:57.21\00:02:00.78 and I think you've been very involved with this. 00:02:00.82\00:02:03.99 What exactly is this? 00:02:04.02\00:02:05.79 Actually Club Sehot is the healthy food store 00:02:05.82\00:02:10.16 where we can provide the healthy food 00:02:10.19\00:02:12.99 like the seeds, the grains, the nuts and the beans 00:02:13.03\00:02:16.83 because it's kind of difficult to find 00:02:16.87\00:02:18.83 this stuff in Indonesia. 00:02:18.87\00:02:20.60 And actually this is a type of our ministry 00:02:20.64\00:02:24.37 to the people around Jakarta, 00:02:24.41\00:02:26.98 so they can come and not only to buy the healthy stuff 00:02:27.01\00:02:30.81 but they also come to listen 00:02:30.85\00:02:33.42 and to learning about the health message 00:02:33.45\00:02:35.35 through the seminars 00:02:35.38\00:02:36.72 and lifestyle consultation like that. 00:02:36.75\00:02:39.69 Now upstairs you had a church service this morning? 00:02:39.72\00:02:43.29 Yes, that's right. 00:02:43.32\00:02:44.66 Now sometimes people have a health store 00:02:44.69\00:02:46.53 and some people have the church 00:02:46.56\00:02:48.23 but the two don't always connect. 00:02:48.26\00:02:51.63 How have you guys managed to connect those two? 00:02:51.67\00:02:54.64 Because we can see that through to the health message 00:02:54.67\00:02:58.27 it really, it really like 00:02:58.31\00:03:00.81 push them to have a lifestyle change 00:03:00.84\00:03:03.75 and when they have the lifestyle change, they... 00:03:03.78\00:03:06.82 some of them and many of them were healed. 00:03:06.85\00:03:10.59 And they ask us how...? 00:03:10.62\00:03:12.99 Where you guys get all this stuffs? 00:03:13.02\00:03:15.52 We said that it's from the Bible 00:03:15.56\00:03:17.66 and we opened Bible study class with them, 00:03:17.69\00:03:20.40 and from the health message 00:03:20.43\00:03:23.16 they learned the truth from the Bible 00:03:23.20\00:03:25.93 and they're coming together and worship with us 00:03:25.97\00:03:28.70 and become one of our member. 00:03:28.74\00:03:31.67 Okay now, the church this morning was full 00:03:31.71\00:03:35.94 and how many are members 00:03:35.98\00:03:37.65 and how many are visitors in there? 00:03:37.68\00:03:39.71 Actually our members is just a very little numbers 00:03:39.75\00:03:43.18 just like about... 00:03:43.22\00:03:44.55 every Sabbath 15 to 20 00:03:44.59\00:03:47.26 but like what you see this morning is actually 00:03:47.29\00:03:49.89 not too much of the guest because we just, 00:03:49.92\00:03:53.23 this day today, we separate, 00:03:53.26\00:03:55.66 we just opened one of the center of influence 00:03:55.70\00:03:57.80 in another place. 00:03:57.83\00:03:59.20 So usually 15 to 20 members 00:03:59.23\00:04:03.07 and then we have about 20 to 50 non SDA guest 00:04:03.10\00:04:07.54 every Sabbath morning. 00:04:07.58\00:04:09.08 Okay, and for those who may not know a centre of influence, 00:04:09.11\00:04:12.41 there is something that Mrs. Ellen White talked about, 00:04:12.45\00:04:15.15 but you talked about small centers in the city 00:04:15.18\00:04:17.89 that can be a positive influence. 00:04:17.92\00:04:19.25 That's right. 00:04:19.29\00:04:20.62 And using Christ methods to win people to him. 00:04:20.66\00:04:25.79 Now one of the things that you are doing too is that 00:04:25.83\00:04:30.17 you have people going out on the streets 00:04:30.20\00:04:32.63 and doing things, 00:04:32.67\00:04:34.00 so tell us a little bit about that? 00:04:34.04\00:04:36.34 This is the regular program that we used to do, 00:04:36.37\00:04:41.51 because we want this center, 00:04:41.54\00:04:44.25 this place as really a centre of influence 00:04:44.28\00:04:47.82 to the people surroundings. 00:04:47.85\00:04:49.38 So we distribute the brochure, the tracks 00:04:49.42\00:04:53.32 so everybody around here, 00:04:53.36\00:04:55.39 I mean if someone from like another cities 00:04:55.42\00:04:59.16 and they don't know about us, it's okay 00:04:59.19\00:05:01.26 but we just want to make sure that nobody 00:05:01.30\00:05:04.13 surrounding this area had said that 00:05:04.17\00:05:06.77 they don't know about us, 00:05:06.80\00:05:09.07 about how to learning the health message 00:05:09.10\00:05:12.07 and how to learn the truth from the Bible 00:05:12.11\00:05:14.31 So how most people found out... 00:05:14.34\00:05:17.41 How do the most people find out about this place? 00:05:17.45\00:05:20.12 Number one is from word by mouth, 00:05:20.15\00:05:23.49 because they have friends, 00:05:23.52\00:05:26.15 they have family that already come here and we heal 00:05:26.19\00:05:29.02 and they get their health was improved 00:05:29.06\00:05:32.46 and they're the one who recommend them 00:05:32.49\00:05:35.66 to another member, another friend 00:05:35.70\00:05:37.53 and bring their friend to come here. 00:05:37.57\00:05:39.57 We also have the variety of program 00:05:39.60\00:05:41.34 and also the distribution of the brochures, the tracks 00:05:41.37\00:05:45.54 but it's not as having a big impact 00:05:45.57\00:05:49.38 as the word by mouth by our friends here. 00:05:49.41\00:05:52.95 Okay. 00:05:52.98\00:05:54.32 And people who are in marketing understand 00:05:54.35\00:05:56.08 that word of mouth is the most powerful. 00:05:56.12\00:05:58.35 That's right. 00:05:58.39\00:05:59.72 You trust when somebody you know tells you, 00:05:59.75\00:06:01.89 that's wonderful. 00:06:01.92\00:06:03.79 Now we met a few other people here, 00:06:03.83\00:06:06.59 could you just maybe very briefly 00:06:06.63\00:06:08.96 share a story of somebody who has come here 00:06:09.00\00:06:11.90 and whose life has been impacted? 00:06:11.93\00:06:13.84 Well, actually there's many testimonies 00:06:13.87\00:06:17.84 what happened here. 00:06:17.87\00:06:19.21 It's not because of us of course 00:06:19.24\00:06:21.41 but we can see how God really works in this center, 00:06:21.44\00:06:24.88 like we have a, like Evie, 00:06:24.91\00:06:28.75 she's the one who coming here because of the health message. 00:06:28.78\00:06:32.39 She heard our program from the radio and come 00:06:32.42\00:06:35.92 and learn about the health 00:06:35.96\00:06:37.29 and then she was attract with her sister 00:06:37.33\00:06:41.00 to learn Bible also. 00:06:41.03\00:06:42.56 Since the vice president of a Bank here, a private bank 00:06:42.60\00:06:46.47 and now she's becoming an active member 00:06:46.50\00:06:51.01 and we can see the change, 00:06:51.04\00:06:54.54 this life change from her 00:06:54.58\00:06:59.71 that really changed her life. 00:06:59.75\00:07:01.85 So see always invite her family to come to this center also. 00:07:01.88\00:07:07.16 Okay, our time is almost up, but just may be one sentence, 00:07:07.19\00:07:12.33 if somebody wanted to do this, 00:07:12.36\00:07:13.70 what would you tell them? 00:07:13.73\00:07:15.06 Well, I can share to them that we are an ordinary people. 00:07:15.10\00:07:19.87 There is nothing special about us here 00:07:19.90\00:07:22.47 but we believe that we have an extraordinary God 00:07:22.50\00:07:26.24 who really have a power to do this work. 00:07:26.27\00:07:29.48 Now I hear that over and over again, 00:07:29.51\00:07:31.21 we are ordinary people 00:07:31.25\00:07:32.68 doing extraordinary things through God. 00:07:32.71\00:07:34.85 Thank you very much, Arlaine. 00:07:34.88\00:07:36.89 And thank you at home and pray that God will show you 00:07:36.92\00:07:40.26 what you can do, to do extraordinary things. 00:07:40.29\00:07:43.83 Next stop, a trip to Mars and mission overseas 00:07:43.86\00:07:47.66 and it's all to do with commitment. 00:07:47.70\00:07:50.33 Wireless telegraphy also known as radio. 00:07:50.37\00:07:53.54 The history of this innovation feels like a soap opera. 00:07:53.57\00:07:56.91 Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla were rival inventors. 00:07:56.94\00:08:00.51 Radio still rely on a Tesla coil component today, 00:08:00.54\00:08:03.95 but just as Tesla was preparing 00:08:03.98\00:08:05.71 to unveil a wireless transmitter 00:08:05.75\00:08:07.55 that could carry out signal 50 miles, 00:08:07.58\00:08:09.75 his work shop burnt to the ground. 00:08:09.78\00:08:12.32 Edison was known for using hired thugs and even the mafia, 00:08:12.35\00:08:16.22 but the cause was most likely an electrical problem. 00:08:16.26\00:08:19.76 With Tesla's work literally up in smoke Guglielmo Marconi 00:08:19.79\00:08:23.87 swoops and manages to send the first transatlantic signal. 00:08:23.90\00:08:27.64 His pattern is later denied 00:08:27.67\00:08:29.17 because the design relied on Tesla's work, 00:08:29.20\00:08:31.71 then the ruling was overturned in favor of Marconi 00:08:31.74\00:08:34.71 when Andrew Carnegie and you guesses it, 00:08:34.74\00:08:37.45 Thomas Edison stepped in with marketing and money. 00:08:37.48\00:08:41.62 In 1943 much later on Marconi's pattern was reversed again 00:08:41.65\00:08:47.09 and posthumously awarded to Tesla. 00:08:47.12\00:08:50.16 Getting radio to work at all 00:08:50.19\00:08:51.83 was an endeavor filled with drama 00:08:51.86\00:08:53.96 but the effects on communication, 00:08:54.00\00:08:55.83 culture and society were even more dramatic. 00:08:55.86\00:08:59.13 In 1905 the Japanese navy obliterated a Russian fleet 00:08:59.17\00:09:02.77 at the battle of Tsushima and part 00:09:02.80\00:09:04.77 because they had purchased radio equipment from Marconi. 00:09:04.81\00:09:08.08 Radio distress signals 00:09:08.11\00:09:09.48 saved the lives of over 700 Titanic passengers 00:09:09.51\00:09:12.51 and subsequently it became law for every vessel 00:09:12.55\00:09:15.75 to have a wireless operator listening 24/7. 00:09:15.78\00:09:19.65 People likened radio to newspapers 00:09:19.69\00:09:21.59 which was helpful in determining content. 00:09:21.62\00:09:23.96 But there were several powerful distinctions. 00:09:23.99\00:09:26.80 You don't need to be literate to listen to radio. 00:09:26.83\00:09:29.43 You also don't need to make extra time 00:09:29.46\00:09:31.70 because listening as opposed to reading 00:09:31.73\00:09:34.10 can be a passive experience. 00:09:34.14\00:09:35.90 You can listen to the radio while you work on other things. 00:09:35.94\00:09:38.77 The radio was like cultural glue 00:09:38.81\00:09:41.01 uniting different classes and backgrounds 00:09:41.04\00:09:42.81 under the banner of a needy information. 00:09:42.84\00:09:45.71 The voice of the man on the street 00:09:45.75\00:09:47.22 was heard alongside the voice of Orson Welles, 00:09:47.25\00:09:49.75 War of the Worlds and alongside President 00:09:49.78\00:09:52.25 Franklin D Roosevelt Fireside chat. 00:09:52.29\00:09:55.12 No president had ever spoken directly 00:09:55.16\00:09:57.43 and simultaneously to the American people before. 00:09:57.46\00:10:00.73 Politicians suddenly need to became great orators, 00:10:00.76\00:10:04.47 propaganda was easily fed to the masses. 00:10:04.50\00:10:07.60 There was another notable figure 00:10:07.64\00:10:09.00 tied to the origins of radio. 00:10:09.04\00:10:10.77 The same here Tesla's workshop went up in flames, 00:10:10.81\00:10:13.48 Harold Marshall Sylvester Richards was born. 00:10:13.51\00:10:16.61 When Marconi sent the first transatlantic signal 00:10:16.64\00:10:19.61 H.M.S Richards was seven. 00:10:19.65\00:10:21.95 When his first live sermon was broadcast, 00:10:21.98\00:10:24.62 Richards and radio were basically the same age. 00:10:24.65\00:10:28.22 In 1929 H.M.S Richard's ministry took root 00:10:28.26\00:10:31.93 in Los Angeles, California. 00:10:31.96\00:10:34.00 After advertising one of the massive 00:10:34.03\00:10:36.00 evangelistic crusades in the radio, 00:10:36.03\00:10:38.13 the station offered him a daily spot 00:10:38.17\00:10:40.07 for a family worship program. 00:10:40.10\00:10:42.04 Richards was convinced, 00:10:42.07\00:10:44.01 evangelism must utilize the radio, 00:10:44.04\00:10:47.08 but conference headquarters thought differently. 00:10:47.11\00:10:49.34 Radio were showing news, it's never been done before 00:10:49.38\00:10:51.81 and besides it's the devil's tool. 00:10:51.85\00:10:54.48 After all alcohol is advertised over the radio 00:10:54.52\00:10:56.99 and so are cigarettes. 00:10:57.02\00:10:59.09 The devil's tool, that's what it is. 00:10:59.12\00:11:01.96 While the conference remained unconvinced, 00:11:01.99\00:11:04.23 Richards grew more obsessed. 00:11:04.26\00:11:06.29 Finally a friend confronted him. 00:11:06.33\00:11:08.20 Herald, you still haven't done anything about radio. 00:11:08.23\00:11:11.17 Do you believe in it? 00:11:11.20\00:11:12.53 I know God wants me to do this, 00:11:12.57\00:11:14.24 he won't leave me alone about it. 00:11:14.27\00:11:16.00 Do you really believe God wants you on the radio? 00:11:16.04\00:11:18.67 Yes, I do. 00:11:18.71\00:11:20.04 I know he wants me on the radio. 00:11:20.08\00:11:21.84 No you don't. 00:11:21.88\00:11:23.21 You don't believe in any such thing. 00:11:23.24\00:11:24.58 What do you mean? 00:11:24.61\00:11:26.01 I do believe it, I really do. 00:11:26.05\00:11:28.08 Well if God wants you on the radio, 00:11:28.12\00:11:29.65 and you believe that's where he wants you, 00:11:29.68\00:11:31.59 why aren't you on the radio? 00:11:31.62\00:11:34.16 The weight of his own fear 00:11:34.19\00:11:35.62 and unbelief hit Richard's like a ton of bricks. 00:11:35.66\00:11:38.29 The very next night when he stood at the door 00:11:38.33\00:11:40.30 to collect offering, 00:11:40.33\00:11:41.70 he told the congregation 00:11:41.73\00:11:43.06 that his left co pocket would the radio pocket. 00:11:43.10\00:11:46.27 If they believed in the ministry's potential, 00:11:46.30\00:11:48.57 they could donate. 00:11:48.60\00:11:50.07 In the middle of the great depression, 00:11:50.11\00:11:52.01 H.M.S Richard's local congregation gave $220, 00:11:52.04\00:11:56.34 that equates to over $3000 in 2015. 00:11:56.38\00:12:00.32 They gave it in cash, gold jewelry and even teeth. 00:12:00.35\00:12:04.49 Night after night, 00:12:04.52\00:12:05.92 the money for airtime filled the radio pocket 00:12:05.95\00:12:08.72 while most radio preachers only preached. 00:12:08.76\00:12:11.29 Richards worked with a producer and musicians 00:12:11.33\00:12:13.70 to create a professional polished program 00:12:13.73\00:12:16.00 called the Tabernacle of the Air. 00:12:16.03\00:12:18.50 Once a week broadcast became daily broadcast. 00:12:18.53\00:12:21.34 Letters poured in with questions, 00:12:21.37\00:12:23.17 prayer request and cash. 00:12:23.20\00:12:25.14 Programming expanded, Lone Star Four 00:12:25.17\00:12:28.28 and all male quartet became a staple on the show. 00:12:28.31\00:12:31.78 Evening meetings were recorded 00:12:31.81\00:12:33.38 and sent out as far as the Atlantic coast, 00:12:33.42\00:12:35.88 Alaska, New Zealand and Australia. 00:12:35.92\00:12:38.89 This went on for seven years 00:12:38.92\00:12:40.82 with no support from the conference. 00:12:40.86\00:12:43.53 Finally, in 1937 the Union Conference 00:12:43.56\00:12:46.46 decided to unite with ongoing ministry 00:12:46.49\00:12:49.00 and actually convinced H.M.S Richards 00:12:49.03\00:12:51.47 to move into radio full time. 00:12:51.50\00:12:54.24 From then on, the Voice of Prophecy was transmitted 00:12:54.27\00:12:56.91 over the air waves twice a week coast to coast 00:12:56.94\00:13:00.11 by 89 different radio stations. 00:13:00.14\00:13:02.91 After a renaming contest, 00:13:02.94\00:13:04.71 the Lone Star Four became the King's Heralds. 00:13:04.75\00:13:08.12 Richards became a recognized radio authority. 00:13:08.15\00:13:11.45 The Oregon Conference sent Julius L Tucker 00:13:11.49\00:13:14.16 to learn everything he could from Richards. 00:13:14.19\00:13:16.89 Eventually Tucker would learn 00:13:16.93\00:13:18.73 enough to found his own program, 00:13:18.76\00:13:21.00 The Quite Hour. 00:13:21.03\00:13:22.80 Today because of H.M.S. Richards, 00:13:22.83\00:13:24.60 the Voice of Prophecy can be heard in nearly 00:13:24.63\00:13:26.80 three dozen languages. 00:13:26.84\00:13:28.54 Bible lessons are available in over 70 languages. 00:13:28.57\00:13:32.67 Adventist world radio broadcast in 80 languages 00:13:32.71\00:13:35.81 and estimates that they are able to reach 00:13:35.84\00:13:37.75 an astounding two-thirds 00:13:37.78\00:13:39.75 of the world's total population. 00:13:39.78\00:13:42.48 Embracing new tools and innovation brought 00:13:42.52\00:13:44.85 Seventh-day Adventist missions into the modern world 00:13:44.89\00:13:47.82 and radio was just the first step 00:13:47.86\00:13:50.06 in another 50 years of growth. 00:13:50.09\00:13:52.39 Well, I hope that you have enjoyed today's program 00:14:00.90\00:14:03.07 and more importantly that you have been inspired 00:14:03.10\00:14:06.01 and challenged by the stories that you have seen and heard. 00:14:06.04\00:14:09.98 Around the world today many missionaries, 00:14:10.01\00:14:12.35 many frontline workers, many church planters 00:14:12.38\00:14:15.55 are sharing the life of God's love. 00:14:15.58\00:14:18.02 It is very challenging for them in many different ways 00:14:18.05\00:14:20.49 and it's so encouraging to them to know that 00:14:20.52\00:14:22.96 there are people around the world 00:14:22.99\00:14:24.36 who are praying for them. 00:14:24.39\00:14:25.79 So thank you so much for your prayers, 00:14:25.83\00:14:28.03 thank you for your personal involvement 00:14:28.06\00:14:30.27 and thank you so much for your mission offerings, 00:14:30.30\00:14:33.07 your tithe, your gifts to Global Mission 00:14:33.10\00:14:35.64 that makes such a huge difference, 00:14:35.67\00:14:38.14 that open up doors of opportunity for mission. 00:14:38.17\00:14:41.34 Before we go, I would like to offer you 00:14:41.38\00:14:43.11 this free Mission Spotlight DVD. 00:14:43.14\00:14:46.58 This DVD is just pack full of stories 00:14:46.61\00:14:49.25 from in and around the world, 00:14:49.28\00:14:50.62 very much like you see on today's program. 00:14:50.65\00:14:53.59 Well, for Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause 00:14:53.62\00:14:55.59 and I hope that you can join me next time, 00:14:55.62\00:14:57.76 right here on Mission 360. 00:14:57.79\00:15:00.20
