Stories from Africa, The United States, 00:00:11.37\00:00:13.88 and Hong Kong 00:00:13.91\00:00:15.31 that and much more coming up next. 00:00:15.34\00:00:17.25 Hello, I'm Gary Krause, and welcome to Mission 360. 00:00:41.94\00:00:45.67 Coming to you today 00:00:45.71\00:00:47.04 from the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong. 00:00:47.08\00:00:50.61 I'm standing in a very special place. 00:00:50.65\00:00:53.92 Beside me is the grave, the tomb of Abram La Rue. 00:00:53.95\00:01:00.16 Abram La Rue was a Seventh-day Adventist lay person, 00:01:00.19\00:01:05.23 who came to faith later in life 00:01:05.26\00:01:08.16 and he had a burden to take the good news of Jesus Christ 00:01:08.20\00:01:12.13 and the Seventh-day Adventist message to the people of Asia. 00:01:12.17\00:01:17.01 At around age 65, 00:01:17.04\00:01:19.01 he contacted the General Conference 00:01:19.04\00:01:21.04 of Seventh-day Adventist 00:01:21.08\00:01:22.98 and told the leaders of his desire, his passion 00:01:23.01\00:01:26.92 but they replied that unfortunately 00:01:26.95\00:01:28.78 they didn't have the money 00:01:28.82\00:01:30.15 and besides that well, he was a bit too old. 00:01:30.19\00:01:33.96 But nothing was to stand in the way of Abram La Rue, 00:01:33.99\00:01:36.79 he was the man of resources, 00:01:36.83\00:01:38.83 he had quite a history as a gold miner, 00:01:38.86\00:01:42.00 as a woodcutter, as a shepherd, 00:01:42.03\00:01:44.47 as a sailor and he went back to his old trade 00:01:44.50\00:01:47.94 and he got on a boat to Honolulu. 00:01:47.97\00:01:50.24 There he worked for a while and then he worked his way 00:01:50.27\00:01:52.51 across to Hong Kong, where he landed in 1888. 00:01:52.54\00:01:57.68 And for more than a decade, 00:01:57.71\00:01:59.41 he worked here mainly sharing literature. 00:01:59.45\00:02:02.08 In 1891 he had printed the first tracts 00:02:02.12\00:02:06.69 in the Chinese language. 00:02:06.72\00:02:08.79 He ministered to sailors, 00:02:08.82\00:02:10.16 he ministered to different people. 00:02:10.19\00:02:11.99 And in 1902 Pastor Anderson and his family came 00:02:12.03\00:02:17.17 and the first people were baptized 00:02:17.20\00:02:20.07 and joined the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:02:20.10\00:02:22.54 right here in Hong Kong. 00:02:22.57\00:02:24.67 And it was these beginnings with Abram La Rue 00:02:24.71\00:02:27.54 that started the work that of course 00:02:27.58\00:02:29.78 then continued on into mainland China. 00:02:29.81\00:02:33.98 And it's a privilege to stand here 00:02:34.02\00:02:36.15 to remember the importance of this man 00:02:36.18\00:02:39.35 who dedicated his life to mission 00:02:39.39\00:02:42.72 because he never went home. 00:02:42.76\00:02:45.09 He never went home. 00:02:45.13\00:02:46.66 Well, we have a lot more about mission 00:02:46.70\00:02:48.76 in this region of the world coming up, 00:02:48.80\00:02:50.60 but first up let's meet a Global Mission pioneer 00:02:50.63\00:02:54.30 in Botswana. 00:02:54.34\00:02:55.67 I'm here as an Adventist Global Mission pioneer 00:03:08.48\00:03:12.99 and I've been here for six months. 00:03:13.02\00:03:18.93 The village is quite interesting to work in. 00:03:18.96\00:03:23.23 When I first came to this village, 00:03:23.26\00:03:25.70 we had five regular members but the population 00:03:25.73\00:03:30.97 is estimated to be above 18,000. 00:03:31.01\00:03:34.44 At first I was a bit discouraged, 00:03:34.48\00:03:37.25 because I was form an atmosphere 00:03:37.28\00:03:39.41 where you fellowship with more than 50 people, 00:03:39.45\00:03:43.15 where worship services will be vibrant and to come 00:03:43.18\00:03:47.29 and find five people who couldn't even sing 00:03:47.32\00:03:50.29 was the main challenge. 00:03:50.33\00:03:52.03 We embarked on the house to house project, 00:03:55.73\00:03:59.13 house to house visitation 00:03:59.17\00:04:00.50 where we share with people the love of Jesus, 00:04:00.54\00:04:03.94 and the Lord has been so good. 00:04:03.97\00:04:06.81 To begin with, we now have more then 80 people 00:04:06.84\00:04:13.11 who are regular in attendance. 00:04:13.15\00:04:15.58 Every Sabbath we have on average 10 or more visitors 00:04:15.62\00:04:20.69 and we have been having baptisms on a monthly basis. 00:04:20.72\00:04:25.26 The first initiative that we took 00:04:29.66\00:04:32.23 was the one for prayer 00:04:32.27\00:04:35.17 where we intensified our prayer life, 00:04:35.20\00:04:38.07 where we would go to a village, 00:04:38.11\00:04:40.48 to a home instead of maybe studying with them, 00:04:40.51\00:04:43.65 we start to pray for them. 00:04:43.68\00:04:45.61 We have encountered people who have been so sick, 00:04:45.65\00:04:48.92 and after praying for them 00:04:48.95\00:04:50.95 we saw them being healed instantly. 00:04:50.99\00:04:56.26 I asked my Lord, where does He want me to serve Him? 00:04:56.29\00:05:02.06 I made a covenant with the Lord. 00:05:02.10\00:05:04.53 I said, "If what I did pleases you Lord, 00:05:04.57\00:05:09.20 you will find me something to do 00:05:09.24\00:05:11.14 which will uplift your name." 00:05:11.17\00:05:13.01 To me, to be a Global Mission pioneer 00:05:13.04\00:05:18.05 is a humbling experience, if I may I use that word. 00:05:18.08\00:05:22.58 One of the things that I want to see accomplished 00:05:22.62\00:05:27.29 is to have the gospel permeate this village 00:05:27.32\00:05:32.49 and the surrounding areas to have people 00:05:32.53\00:05:36.43 living in harmony with the principles 00:05:36.46\00:05:39.53 laid down in the Bible. 00:05:39.57\00:05:42.37 Those are basics priorities that I want to see achieved 00:05:42.40\00:05:46.78 and accomplished in this village. 00:05:46.81\00:05:48.98 My guest is Pastor Jeff Scoggins 00:05:57.39\00:05:59.49 who is the new planning director 00:05:59.52\00:06:01.72 for the office of Adventist Mission 00:06:01.76\00:06:03.12 here at the General Conference. 00:06:03.16\00:06:04.66 Jeff, thanks for joining us. Thank you. 00:06:04.69\00:06:06.49 Now, Jeff, when I first met you, 00:06:06.53\00:06:08.43 you were actually working 00:06:08.46\00:06:09.80 at the Adventist world headquarters, 00:06:09.83\00:06:11.17 what were you doing there? 00:06:11.20\00:06:12.53 Beginning when? When I was there. 00:06:12.57\00:06:14.97 When I came out of college 00:06:15.00\00:06:16.34 I was in ADRA in north American division 00:06:16.37\00:06:18.97 and then about 1998 maybe you, 00:06:19.01\00:06:24.11 actually it was Mike I guess who was invited me and you 00:06:24.15\00:06:26.98 to do communication for Global Mission. 00:06:27.02\00:06:29.52 Right, so that's where we work together 00:06:29.55\00:06:31.75 but was it too long after that you were invited 00:06:31.79\00:06:35.12 to go to Moscow 00:06:35.16\00:06:36.49 to work in the Euro-Asia region of the world. 00:06:36.52\00:06:39.26 What were you called to do there? 00:06:39.29\00:06:41.96 I was called to be the field secretary 00:06:42.00\00:06:44.37 for strategic planning and global mission. 00:06:44.40\00:06:46.63 Okay, so you'd been talking about global mission, 00:06:46.67\00:06:50.44 you've been promoting global mission, 00:06:50.47\00:06:51.97 you've been doing brochures and every thing like that. 00:06:52.01\00:06:54.38 Now you actually going into the field 00:06:54.41\00:06:55.98 to be involved, you know. 00:06:56.01\00:06:57.35 That was it. So what did you do? 00:06:57.38\00:06:59.58 When I got there, we walked into not the same day 00:06:59.61\00:07:03.89 but very soon there after walked into Adcom 00:07:03.92\00:07:07.26 and they said, "Let us tell you what we want you to do." 00:07:07.29\00:07:10.73 Which I thought I knew what I was supposed to do, 00:07:10.76\00:07:13.33 turns out I didn't. 00:07:13.36\00:07:14.70 They said in the next two years which was my term there, 00:07:14.73\00:07:17.37 the next two years we want to plant 300 new churches. 00:07:17.40\00:07:22.77 House churches to the former Soviet Republics. 00:07:22.80\00:07:25.81 Can you raise four million dollars to do that? 00:07:25.84\00:07:29.44 And I don't know what I was thinking 00:07:29.48\00:07:31.21 but I was inspired and I said sure. 00:07:31.25\00:07:34.42 Is that all? Yes, that it. Yeah, exactly. 00:07:34.45\00:07:38.25 I got a reality check when the first donation came in 00:07:38.29\00:07:42.46 for 10,000 dollars and my wife so kindly said, 00:07:42.49\00:07:46.96 "Do that several hundred more times 00:07:47.00\00:07:48.83 and you'll have it." 00:07:48.86\00:07:50.20 And that's when the amount of money 00:07:50.23\00:07:51.57 just hit me of what it really was. 00:07:51.60\00:07:54.77 Yeah, and while you prayed through it, 00:07:54.80\00:07:57.47 and you work through it and there's actually a book 00:07:57.51\00:08:00.94 published full of wonderful stories from that project 00:08:00.98\00:08:04.31 because how many churches were planted? 00:08:04.35\00:08:06.41 311 if I'm not mistaken by the time we were done, yeah. 00:08:06.45\00:08:11.05 And these were planted by whom? Global Mission pioneers. 00:08:11.09\00:08:15.02 We brought in 300 young men, 00:08:15.06\00:08:19.53 really from all of those places 00:08:19.56\00:08:22.66 where they were going to be planted. 00:08:22.70\00:08:24.03 We brought them in from local places 00:08:24.07\00:08:26.53 and train them at the seminary Zaoksi 00:08:26.57\00:08:30.24 for three months. 00:08:30.27\00:08:31.77 And then we sent them out into the field, 00:08:31.81\00:08:34.24 we went and we purchased very cheap houses 00:08:34.28\00:08:38.85 for them to live in, 00:08:38.88\00:08:40.22 which they also used as a church. 00:08:40.25\00:08:41.65 Wonderful. 00:08:41.68\00:08:43.02 And so yeah, it was, 00:08:43.05\00:08:44.39 it turned out to be quite the project, 00:08:44.42\00:08:48.22 people still talk about it in its 15 years later. 00:08:48.26\00:08:51.13 Right, and I was just talking to someone the other day 00:08:51.16\00:08:54.43 and hundreds of those churches are still operating. 00:08:54.46\00:08:56.67 They still are. 00:08:56.70\00:08:58.03 In fact I was a little worried about it, 00:08:58.07\00:08:59.40 because I've been out of touch for quite a while 00:08:59.43\00:09:01.20 after leaving there and they, I asked somebody just recently, 00:09:01.24\00:09:06.11 "How many are still going?" 00:09:06.14\00:09:08.31 And the guy that I worked with closely Ivan Ostrovsky, 00:09:08.34\00:09:10.81 he said at least 60 percent are still going strong, 00:09:10.85\00:09:14.25 others are still struggling, 00:09:14.28\00:09:16.89 some of them had to be sold or whatever which is fine, 00:09:16.92\00:09:19.22 that's the process. 00:09:19.25\00:09:20.59 He said some of the young men that we brought in 00:09:20.62\00:09:22.12 are now conference presidents. 00:09:22.16\00:09:23.96 That's wonderful. Yeah. 00:09:23.99\00:09:25.56 So, Jeff, share a story from one of the pioneers, 00:09:25.59\00:09:28.63 one of their experiences in this project. 00:09:28.66\00:09:30.77 One of my favorite stories 00:09:30.80\00:09:33.07 is about a young man named Andre. 00:09:33.10\00:09:35.24 And I'm not gonna tell you where he was working at 00:09:35.27\00:09:37.57 because for all I know he's still working there 00:09:37.61\00:09:39.57 and it's a closed country right now. 00:09:39.61\00:09:42.21 But he came out of a life of crime. 00:09:42.24\00:09:44.31 He was in big time in organized crime 00:09:44.35\00:09:47.68 and I have to shorten the story, 00:09:47.72\00:09:49.88 I make this assortment because it's a long 00:09:49.92\00:09:52.59 and it's great story but it turned out that he, 00:09:52.62\00:09:56.46 somebody handed him a Bible. 00:09:56.49\00:09:58.39 And he discovered not only Jesus 00:09:58.43\00:10:01.10 but he discovered the Sabbath in the Bible. 00:10:01.13\00:10:03.16 He never heard of a Seventh-day Adventist in his life. 00:10:03.20\00:10:06.07 He was on death row 00:10:06.10\00:10:07.84 through a series of miracles he was released. 00:10:07.87\00:10:12.31 After being tested on the Sabbath 00:10:12.34\00:10:15.18 and all sorts of things, 00:10:15.21\00:10:16.54 I mean he was going to be killed by the prison warden 00:10:16.58\00:10:19.85 due to his beliefs 00:10:19.88\00:10:21.62 and he stayed staunchly with him, 00:10:21.65\00:10:25.02 even though he had no training nothing like that. 00:10:25.05\00:10:28.66 He had been miraculously preserved in the uranium lines. 00:10:28.69\00:10:31.93 People didn't lived there, 00:10:31.96\00:10:33.29 that was a death sentence in of its own. 00:10:33.33\00:10:35.06 He got out of prison and he went to find out 00:10:35.10\00:10:37.47 if there was any other people that kept the Sabbath, 00:10:37.50\00:10:40.64 discovered the Seventh-day Adventist and when I met him, 00:10:40.67\00:10:43.64 he was planting a church in his country 00:10:43.67\00:10:46.47 for a Seventh-day Adventist church 00:10:46.51\00:10:47.84 and he was there with a bunch of other pioneers 00:10:47.88\00:10:50.05 that we were talking about 00:10:50.08\00:10:51.48 and they were talking about how difficult it was 00:10:51.51\00:10:53.95 and how they were afraid of the local authorities 00:10:53.98\00:10:58.25 and things like this. 00:10:58.29\00:10:59.62 And I was watching this young man, Andre 00:10:59.65\00:11:02.46 and he was just down there shaking his head. 00:11:02.49\00:11:04.73 And I knew what he was thinking 'cause this guy was fearless 00:11:04.76\00:11:07.40 after what he had been through and I even asked him I said, 00:11:07.43\00:11:13.44 "Can I share your story?" 00:11:13.47\00:11:14.97 I said, "Will that get you in trouble?" 00:11:15.00\00:11:16.34 He said, "I don't care, if it gets me in trouble." 00:11:16.37\00:11:19.17 I still don't do it for his sake 00:11:19.21\00:11:20.84 but he was just an inspiring story 00:11:20.88\00:11:24.65 of what God can do even without the infrastructure or that, 00:11:24.68\00:11:29.08 you know, maybe could have come and baptized him 00:11:29.12\00:11:31.15 or something like that. 00:11:31.19\00:11:32.52 He worked through our men, he was planting churches. 00:11:32.55\00:11:34.59 Amazing story. 00:11:34.62\00:11:35.96 Yeah, and so throughout the former Soviet Union 00:11:35.99\00:11:40.10 these lighthouses were established seminaries 00:11:40.13\00:11:42.46 where there were no Adventist congregations. 00:11:42.50\00:11:44.77 Correct. 00:11:44.80\00:11:46.13 So why is church planting like you're involved in there 00:11:46.17\00:11:49.54 in the former Soviet Union, why is that so important? 00:11:49.57\00:11:53.68 Because it's what pushing us out 00:11:53.71\00:11:55.54 into the frontiers of mission. 00:11:55.58\00:11:57.41 We don't want to be here much longer 00:11:57.45\00:11:58.91 if we can do anything about it 00:11:58.95\00:12:00.65 and the thing is that Jesus gave us the ability 00:12:00.68\00:12:03.95 to do something about it. 00:12:03.99\00:12:05.32 He said go tell the world, 00:12:05.35\00:12:06.69 and when we tell the world he can come back. 00:12:06.72\00:12:08.76 What we are doing is we're not just planting churches, 00:12:08.79\00:12:11.06 we're planting churches in the areas 00:12:11.09\00:12:13.16 where there are not currently Seventh-day Adventists 00:12:13.19\00:12:16.63 and so that is our mandate. 00:12:16.67\00:12:19.30 We are doing what Jesus told us to do. 00:12:19.33\00:12:20.94 That's why it's so important. Fantastic. 00:12:20.97\00:12:23.41 Extremely fantastic 00:12:23.44\00:12:24.77 and that's why you're our new planning director. 00:12:24.81\00:12:26.61 Welcome. 00:12:26.64\00:12:27.98 So, friends, at home please remember to pray 00:12:28.01\00:12:29.98 for Global Mission pioneers. 00:12:30.01\00:12:32.01 Pray for Global Mission initiatives to reach into new 00:12:32.05\00:12:35.02 and challenging areas and people groups. 00:12:35.05\00:12:37.39 And to find out more information 00:12:37.42\00:12:39.09 about church planting and Global Mission 00:12:39.12\00:12:41.39 and how you can support through your prayers and your finances, 00:12:41.42\00:12:44.96 go to AdventistMission.org. 00:12:44.99\00:12:47.23
