In the last episode, 00:00:39.20\00:00:40.40 we traveled from Thailand to Cambodia, 00:00:40.40\00:00:42.80 where we met Tim and Windy Maddocks, 00:00:42.80\00:00:44.87 they live in the city of Siem Reap 00:00:44.87\00:00:46.47 and have been missionaries there for over 25 years. 00:00:46.47\00:00:49.78 - When they surrounded everything to God 00:00:49.78\00:00:51.41 and stepped out by faith alone, 00:00:51.41\00:00:53.31 God began to work through them 00:00:53.31\00:00:54.82 to create what is now known as 'Wat Preah Yesu' 00:00:54.82\00:00:57.25 which means the Jesus school. 00:00:57.25\00:00:58.95 - Now in this episode, 00:00:58.95\00:01:00.29 we are going to see a new project 00:01:00.29\00:01:01.32 that God is building through them, 00:01:01.32\00:01:02.96 and we hope it will show you the blessings 00:01:02.96\00:01:04.76 that come from obeying God. 00:01:04.76\00:01:06.43 Siem Reap is where Angkor Wat, 00:01:06.43\00:01:08.56 some very famous old ruins are located, 00:01:08.56\00:01:11.53 they were built around a thousand years ago 00:01:11.53\00:01:14.34 and today attracts nearly 2 million tourists a year. 00:01:14.34\00:01:17.77 - So Tim and Windy were wondering 00:01:17.77\00:01:19.11 how they could witness all these tourists 00:01:19.11\00:01:21.31 and reach them about our creator God. 00:01:21.31\00:01:23.91 - So God gave them the idea of starting a butterfly garden, 00:01:23.91\00:01:27.22 they call it butterfly paradise. 00:01:27.22\00:01:29.52 (instrumental music) 00:01:29.52\00:01:32.69 - How long do you think it'll take to finish? 00:07:35.95\00:07:38.35 - Um, when I have enough money, 00:07:38.35\00:07:40.09 maybe two, three, four months. 00:07:40.09\00:07:43.06 Depends how much time I can commit to it 00:07:43.06\00:07:44.89 to make it really happen. 00:07:44.89\00:07:46.70 The part that's gonna take the longest is the landscaping, 00:07:46.70\00:07:50.23 so the buildings, I can put the building team onto that, 00:07:50.23\00:07:52.63 they can do that pretty fast, 00:07:52.63\00:07:54.67 but the landscaping has to be custom designed 00:07:54.67\00:07:57.94 so that'll take quite a while. 00:07:57.94\00:08:01.24 Just in here will be probably the important room 00:08:01.24\00:08:04.21 in the whole building, 00:08:04.21\00:08:06.08 and this where we will grow the caterpillars to butterflies, 00:08:06.08\00:08:10.05 - Mm 00:08:10.05\00:08:11.15 - So it'll be an air conditioned room, 00:08:11.15\00:08:12.65 and there we need to produce 00:08:12.65\00:08:15.79 between two and four thousand butterflies a month. 00:08:15.79\00:08:18.89 - Whoa. 00:08:18.89\00:08:20.56 - So we have to, 00:08:20.56\00:08:22.50 we're planning to have 00:08:22.50\00:08:23.50 at least twenty species of butterflies, 00:08:23.50\00:08:25.70 that we're growing here, releasing into the cage, 00:08:25.70\00:08:28.74 and then they'll be 00:08:28.74\00:08:30.01 at least ten or fifteen butterfly species, smaller ones, 00:08:30.01\00:08:33.78 that will be self breeding in the cage, 00:08:33.78\00:08:36.28 we'll just provide them with food 00:08:36.28\00:08:37.65 and they'll just multiply themselves inside the cage, 00:08:37.65\00:08:41.15 cause the small ones, 00:08:41.15\00:08:42.52 a bit fiddly to take care of a tiny little caterpillar. 00:08:42.52\00:08:45.69 We have on the other side over there behind the threes, 00:08:45.69\00:08:48.72 lot of plant's planted that are the food plants 00:08:48.72\00:08:51.26 for different kinds of butterflies. 00:08:51.26\00:08:53.26 So we can harvest the leaves, 00:08:53.26\00:08:55.20 feed the caterpillars, 00:08:55.20\00:08:57.37 and when they turn into chrysalis, 00:08:57.37\00:08:59.40 prepare them for display, 00:08:59.40\00:09:01.84 and then watch them hatch 00:09:01.84\00:09:03.37 and there are some crazy caterpillars, 00:09:03.37\00:09:05.77 really really beautiful, 00:09:05.77\00:09:08.31 and I plan to build one of them 00:09:08.31\00:09:10.91 as the worlds largest concrete caterpillar sculpture, 00:09:10.91\00:09:15.05 just outside the entrance there, 00:09:15.05\00:09:17.69 and it'll be about five meters tall, 00:09:17.69\00:09:19.59 and about twenty meters long. 00:09:19.59\00:09:21.22 - [Lillian] Whoa. 00:09:21.22\00:09:22.32 - Yeah it's yellow, orange and black. 00:09:22.32\00:09:24.36 It has these huge horns hanging of it, 00:09:24.36\00:09:26.46 so it'll be quite a sight. 00:09:26.46\00:09:27.76 Then we have an educational center, 00:09:27.76\00:09:29.56 so you can come and learn more about butterflies, 00:09:29.56\00:09:31.87 some really cool things 00:09:31.87\00:09:33.27 like butterflies, when they hatch out of the chrysalis, 00:09:33.27\00:09:37.77 they know how to pump their wings up, 00:09:37.77\00:09:40.74 and they know how to dry their wings 00:09:40.74\00:09:43.01 and then they also know how to fly in strong winds, 00:09:43.01\00:09:46.28 having never been taught, 00:09:46.28\00:09:48.35 and not only that, they know how to find a mate, 00:09:48.35\00:09:51.49 and how to mate on the wing 00:09:51.49\00:09:54.66 and they've never practiced that one either, 00:09:54.66\00:09:57.13 so you think about Air Force pilots, 00:09:57.13\00:10:00.46 where they have refueling planes, 00:10:00.46\00:10:02.83 in the jet fighters, they have to practice for months, 00:10:02.83\00:10:06.80 to be able to refuel in air, 00:10:06.80\00:10:09.10 but these butterflies, they hatch out, 00:10:09.10\00:10:11.57 and within an hour of hatching, 00:10:11.57\00:10:12.94 they are ready to mate in the air like refueling, 00:10:12.94\00:10:17.55 and they can smell their food plant 00:10:17.55\00:10:21.12 for 3 to 5 kilometers away, 00:10:21.12\00:10:25.39 and they track it, 00:10:25.39\00:10:26.72 when they find it, they scratch it with their foot, 00:10:26.72\00:10:28.59 and they taste through their foot, 00:10:28.59\00:10:30.43 if they've got the right plant, 00:10:30.43\00:10:31.86 they'll lay their eggs on it. 00:10:31.86\00:10:33.19 (instrumental music) 00:10:33.19\00:10:36.77 Through that door there, 00:10:36.77\00:10:38.73 it'll take you into another building, 00:10:38.73\00:10:41.24 and that building will be a small animal house, 00:10:41.24\00:10:43.41 so it'll have snakes and lizards and frogs, 00:10:43.41\00:10:46.37 and insects, bigger insects 00:10:46.37\00:10:48.14 for people to go and have a look at, 00:10:48.14\00:10:50.01 live ones of course, 00:10:50.01\00:10:52.78 and we also plan to have an aquaponics center over there, 00:10:52.78\00:10:56.18 we're we'll grow vegetables for the restaurant, 00:10:56.18\00:10:59.29 by filtering the water from the ponds, 00:10:59.29\00:11:01.66 and growing the vegetables in the water. 00:11:01.66\00:11:03.46 And this here is a turtle pond, 00:11:03.46\00:11:05.29 so the turtles that currently live in my house, 00:11:05.29\00:11:07.40 turtles and tortoises, they'll live here, 00:11:07.40\00:11:09.70 there's a little island in the middle 00:11:09.70\00:11:10.80 where they can sun bake 00:11:10.80\00:11:11.80 and you can enjoy, 00:11:11.80\00:11:13.34 and they'll be free to walk around within their pond area, 00:11:13.34\00:11:16.60 over here, they'll be a waterfall, 00:11:16.60\00:11:19.01 which will drop in front, 00:11:19.01\00:11:20.88 so you better stand behind the waterfall and look through 00:11:20.88\00:11:24.55 into the garden, 00:11:24.55\00:11:26.21 and then they'll be other gardens underneath here, 00:11:26.21\00:11:29.08 and then to finish it off, 00:11:29.08\00:11:30.82 you step through some glass doors here 00:11:30.82\00:11:33.39 into the souvenir shop, 00:11:33.39\00:11:35.39 and we plan to manufacture as many souvenirs 00:11:36.66\00:11:38.73 as we can here on campus, 00:11:38.73\00:11:41.00 professionally sort of done souvenirs, 00:11:41.00\00:11:43.63 people will exit through the door way over there, 00:11:43.63\00:11:47.20 when they exit, they'll see a giant butterfly, 00:11:47.20\00:11:51.74 just outside also, made of concrete and steel, 00:11:51.74\00:11:54.94 - Whoa, 00:11:54.94\00:11:57.01 that's gonna be a really cool place. 00:11:57.01\00:12:00.38 - I hope so, I hope people find it really cool, 00:12:00.38\00:12:02.15 and they want to come back. 00:12:02.15\00:12:04.42 - [Cameraman] Are you guys blown away? 00:12:04.42\00:12:05.72 - Hmm. 00:12:05.72\00:12:06.55 - Uhun. 00:12:06.55\00:12:07.82 - And the income generated will be obviously 00:12:07.82\00:12:09.12 used to help run the orphanage and the schools, 00:12:09.12\00:12:11.93 and do other projects, 00:12:11.93\00:12:14.76 probably develop more schools. 00:12:14.76\00:12:17.63 - We definitely have to come back when this is finished. 00:12:17.63\00:12:19.97 - Yeah, this place is really cool. 00:12:19.97\00:12:23.57 (instrumental music) 00:12:23.57\00:12:28.64 - So how can we help to get involved with this project? 00:12:31.18\00:12:33.58 - You can help pray, 00:12:33.58\00:12:34.72 pray that God will give me wisdom to finish it, 00:12:34.72\00:12:37.29 and that God will provide the finances 00:12:37.29\00:12:39.65 so that we can finish it, 00:12:39.65\00:12:41.49 and get it open, 00:12:41.49\00:12:42.86 and let the world enjoy the world of butterflies. 00:12:42.86\00:12:46.96 - So how long have you been working on it already? 00:12:46.96\00:12:49.96 - We began working actually on the cage back in March, 00:12:49.96\00:12:53.07 of 2016, so next month, it'll be twelve months. 00:12:53.07\00:12:58.04 - Where did you get this idea? 00:12:58.94\00:13:00.14 - A friend of mine gave me the idea, 00:13:00.14\00:13:02.38 his idea was something fairly small, 00:13:02.38\00:13:04.88 and I sort of dismissed it, 00:13:04.88\00:13:07.55 but God wouldn't let me dismiss it, 00:13:07.55\00:13:09.52 and it just kept growing and growing and growing, 00:13:09.52\00:13:12.12 so I really think it's God's idea, 00:13:12.12\00:13:13.79 I tried to convince him many times that we shouldn't do it, 00:13:13.79\00:13:17.19 but every time I tried to convince him, 00:13:17.19\00:13:19.16 he convinced me otherwise. 00:13:19.16\00:13:21.10 - How does God convince you of something. 00:13:21.10\00:13:23.13 - Well in this case, 00:13:23.13\00:13:24.50 it's like 'God I don't think we should do this project, 00:13:24.50\00:13:26.77 it's too big,' 00:13:26.77\00:13:27.84 and then God will show me a new butterfly 00:13:27.84\00:13:29.77 that very day that I'm arguing with him, 00:13:29.77\00:13:31.94 or he would show me a butterfly laying an egg on a plant, 00:13:31.94\00:13:34.88 that I didn't know was the host plant, 00:13:34.88\00:13:37.05 and it's like 00:13:37.05\00:13:38.08 'God, you know I'm arguing with you today, 00:13:38.08\00:13:41.68 and then you're showing me these things about butterflies,' 00:13:41.68\00:13:44.89 and so for me it's like God just trying to tell me, 00:13:44.89\00:13:47.76 through the butterflies, 'you gotta do this.' 00:13:47.76\00:13:50.13 - Is this like, gonna be like the biggest butterfly garden 00:13:50.13\00:13:52.46 in the world or something like that? 00:13:52.46\00:13:54.30 - It won't be the biggest, 00:13:54.30\00:13:55.76 but it would probably be in the top 10, 00:13:55.76\00:13:58.33 but hopefully the most beautiful. 00:13:58.33\00:14:00.80 - Where are you gonna get all the plants for the landscape. 00:14:00.80\00:14:03.57 - That's a very good question 00:14:03.57\00:14:04.67 and I started thinking about that two years ago 00:14:04.67\00:14:06.51 when we started working on the idea, 00:14:06.51\00:14:08.94 and I got this idea 00:14:08.94\00:14:10.75 that was gonna cost a lot of money for plants, 00:14:10.75\00:14:13.65 and so I better start collecting, 00:14:13.65\00:14:16.25 so about two years ago, 00:14:16.25\00:14:17.59 I started collecting one of each kind, 00:14:17.59\00:14:20.22 and multiplying them, so if you want to come with me, 00:14:20.22\00:14:22.56 I'll show you what we've done. 00:14:22.56\00:14:24.29 (instrumental music) 00:14:24.29\00:14:27.40 Now did you want to see the snakes? 00:14:27.40\00:14:29.33 - Will they still be there when you open this place? 00:14:29.33\00:14:31.63 - No, when we open the place, 00:14:31.63\00:14:33.00 they'll have their own special room 00:14:33.00\00:14:34.60 like an enclosure with nice glass fronts 00:14:34.60\00:14:36.47 so people can see them, 00:14:36.47\00:14:37.94 not locked away here in the dark, 00:14:37.94\00:14:40.74 but right now, they're safe here. 00:14:40.74\00:14:43.08 (jungle music) 00:14:43.08\00:14:45.75 - Hello, Hello where are you? 00:14:50.22\00:14:54.46 Turn around and look at me, 00:14:54.46\00:14:55.39 there you go. 00:14:55.39\00:14:56.79 - [Marian] Look at his face. 00:14:56.79\00:14:59.19 - They say that go for the eyes, 00:15:00.73\00:15:03.63 so if they can't see your eyes, 00:15:03.63\00:15:05.70 they're not gonna strike you. 00:15:05.70\00:15:07.27 This ones has two bumps in it, 00:15:07.27\00:15:08.40 they're ducks that it ate last week, 00:15:08.40\00:15:10.97 and the one down here has one bump in it, 00:15:10.97\00:15:13.24 last night it ate a duck for dinner. 00:15:13.24\00:15:15.21 There's one more down here, 00:15:15.21\00:15:17.11 - [Lillian] Poor duck. 00:15:17.11\00:15:18.31 - But these are wild snakes, 00:15:18.31\00:15:20.35 so we're just trying to leave them in their wild state, 00:15:20.35\00:15:24.19 not tame them, and so wild animal eat live animals, 00:15:24.19\00:15:28.59 so we leave the animals in here 00:15:28.59\00:15:31.56 and we give the duck food and water 00:15:31.56\00:15:33.29 and when the snakes are hungry, they'll eat them. 00:15:33.29\00:15:36.97 - [Marian] So you just like found snakes 00:15:36.97\00:15:38.37 and brought them here? 00:15:38.37\00:15:39.50 - No, no, I bought the snakes. 00:15:39.50\00:15:40.57 - [Marian] Okay. 00:15:40.57\00:15:41.60 - Now I should tell you the story, 00:15:41.60\00:15:43.61 it's a funny sort of story about danger, 00:15:43.61\00:15:46.37 see the first two ducks I put in here, 00:15:46.37\00:15:49.04 they didn't know anything about snakes, 00:15:49.04\00:15:52.15 and the snakes coil up over here in the corner, 00:15:52.15\00:15:55.92 and so at night, the ducks would go and sleep on them, 00:15:55.92\00:15:58.45 even during the day, 00:15:58.45\00:15:59.55 and so literally the ducks are sleeping 00:15:59.55\00:16:02.22 on the heads of the snakes, 00:16:02.22\00:16:04.03 and the snakes didn't mind. 00:16:04.03\00:16:05.09 One day I watched the duck put his beak 00:16:05.09\00:16:06.96 under the head of the snake 00:16:06.96\00:16:08.53 and lift the snake's head up, 00:16:08.53\00:16:10.37 so that's how close they are, 00:16:10.37\00:16:12.53 and the snakes just didn't bother about them, 00:16:12.53\00:16:15.00 but when they got hungry, they ate them. 00:16:15.00\00:16:16.94 The snake is about 12 feet long, 00:16:16.94\00:16:19.67 but they will grow to about 20 feet long. 00:16:19.67\00:16:23.51 - Those are big snakes. 00:16:23.51\00:16:24.98 - Kinda cool. 00:16:24.98\00:16:25.81 - She likes snakes. 00:16:25.81\00:16:27.88 - [Marian] She doesn't like snakes. 00:16:27.88\00:16:29.82 (instrumental music) 00:16:29.82\00:16:33.66 - [Lillian] Whoa. 00:16:33.66\00:16:35.42 - [Marian] But there's butterflies, 00:16:35.42\00:16:37.39 there's already butterflies. 00:16:37.39\00:16:39.93 - Nice butterflies over here. 00:16:39.93\00:16:41.60 So in the last two years, 00:16:41.60\00:16:42.93 I've collected over two hundred varieties of plants, 00:16:42.93\00:16:45.27 actually probably it's closer to about three hundred now, 00:16:45.27\00:16:48.87 and so this is part of the collection, 00:16:48.87\00:16:51.91 and over there, there's a lot more, 00:16:51.91\00:16:54.11 and so most of them we started with one plant, 00:16:54.11\00:16:57.31 or one plant bag and we just started dividing them up, 00:16:57.31\00:17:00.82 and some it's easier than others, 00:17:00.82\00:17:03.65 but it's been going pretty successfully, 00:17:04.79\00:17:08.16 and the students work here with me 00:17:08.16\00:17:09.96 to help produce the plants, 00:17:09.96\00:17:12.99 and it's really fun working with plants, 00:17:12.99\00:17:17.33 seeing how beautiful they are, 00:17:17.33\00:17:19.07 most of these plants aren't full size 00:17:19.07\00:17:21.34 because we keep chopping them up, 00:17:21.34\00:17:23.34 so we don't let them get to big, 00:17:23.34\00:17:25.37 but I have a couple of these in my garden, 00:17:25.37\00:17:27.88 they're like about how many feet, 00:17:27.88\00:17:31.91 4 feet across, like a huge big nest, 00:17:31.91\00:17:34.98 so these would grow much bigger, 00:17:35.78\00:17:37.65 maybe come down how where we've got some nice plants here, 00:17:37.65\00:17:40.09 just watch the slob. 00:17:40.09\00:17:41.82 (instrumental music) 00:17:42.92\00:17:46.09 These are some of my favorite plants, 00:17:53.20\00:17:54.87 these are called the bromeliads, 00:17:54.87\00:17:56.87 they're like a pineapple, 00:17:56.87\00:17:58.74 and they're really colorful, 00:17:58.74\00:18:01.11 so these will be hanging out off rocks off trees, 00:18:01.11\00:18:03.41 and that sort of thing in the butterfly paradise, 00:18:03.41\00:18:05.78 you've got the ferns, they don't grow much taller than that, 00:18:05.78\00:18:09.32 and then we've got plants like this, 00:18:09.32\00:18:12.32 leaves will grow about so high, 00:18:12.32\00:18:14.76 and these ones, these will grow 00:18:14.76\00:18:18.13 about 9 to 10 feet high, 00:18:18.13\00:18:20.86 these have a big red flower, they're called heliconias, 00:18:20.86\00:18:23.60 and you can see this one, 00:18:23.60\00:18:25.13 it's red, green, white, 00:18:25.13\00:18:27.34 these ones, they have purple on the back, 00:18:27.34\00:18:31.91 and then green, 00:18:31.91\00:18:34.41 and this one down here, 00:18:34.41\00:18:36.28 it's one of my favorite ones, 00:18:36.28\00:18:37.75 look at the color of that. 00:18:37.75\00:18:38.85 - [Girls] Whoa, that is so pretty. 00:18:38.85\00:18:41.48 - And you can see the butterflies like it, 00:18:42.58\00:18:44.79 most of these butterflies are just one kind, 00:18:44.79\00:18:47.19 and it's called the gray pansy, 00:18:47.19\00:18:49.66 but at the moment 00:18:49.66\00:18:51.36 that's the most common butterfly we have around here, 00:18:51.36\00:18:53.66 but here on this property, 00:18:53.66\00:18:54.96 we've seen over one hundred different kinds of butterflies. 00:18:54.96\00:18:57.63 - Whoa. 00:18:57.63\00:18:58.43 - Most of them breed here, 00:18:58.43\00:19:00.10 so that's one of the things that also help me 00:19:00.10\00:19:02.24 to convince me to do this project, 00:19:02.24\00:19:04.67 the very fact that there was so many butterflies 00:19:04.67\00:19:06.68 that lived here, 00:19:06.68\00:19:08.04 and not just little ones, big ones, 00:19:08.04\00:19:10.55 and it's like God had prearranged 00:19:10.55\00:19:13.08 that we have the food plants for them, 00:19:13.08\00:19:15.82 years and years before he ever got the idea to me. 00:19:15.82\00:19:20.06 - Wow that was so amazing, 00:19:21.02\00:19:23.29 when we were there twelve months ago, 00:19:23.29\00:19:25.03 it was hard to imagine what it would look like finished 00:19:25.03\00:19:27.20 with all the plants and butterflies, 00:19:27.20\00:19:29.16 - Yeah, it's gonna be so awesome. 00:19:29.16\00:19:30.57 - It is definitely. 00:19:30.57\00:19:31.80 We have a special guest with us, 00:19:31.80\00:19:33.44 Tim Maddocks, welcome to MissionTrek. 00:19:33.44\00:19:36.07 - Thank you very much, it's a great pleasure to be here. 00:19:36.07\00:19:37.81 - It's great to have you. 00:19:37.81\00:19:39.44 - So the footage that we saw in the segment 00:19:39.44\00:19:41.18 was shot last year in February, 00:19:41.18\00:19:43.08 - Yes. 00:19:43.08\00:19:44.18 - So has it changed at all since then? 00:19:44.18\00:19:46.18 - It's changed a lot, 00:19:46.18\00:19:48.08 it's not finished yet but it's almost. 00:19:48.08\00:19:51.09 - That's really exciting. 00:19:51.09\00:19:52.19 - So can give us an update. 00:19:52.19\00:19:53.92 - Yeah actually I took some video 00:19:53.92\00:19:55.22 just before I left two weeks ago, 00:19:55.22\00:19:57.39 so I'd love to share it with you. 00:19:57.39\00:19:58.29 - Awesome. 00:19:58.29\00:19:59.69 - So you might remember we came through the entrance, 00:19:59.69\00:20:02.10 well now you can see the plants, 00:20:02.10\00:20:03.73 there's glass where the crocodile pond is going to be, 00:20:03.73\00:20:06.90 waterfalls are still not working but they will be soon, 00:20:06.90\00:20:10.27 you can see butterflies, 00:20:10.27\00:20:11.84 there's no wire on the sides yet, 00:20:11.84\00:20:14.48 but that allows the butterflies to just fly in and fly out, 00:20:14.48\00:20:19.48 and lot's of butterflies come everyday, 00:20:20.92\00:20:22.98 it's butterfly paradise of course, 00:20:22.98\00:20:24.52 they want to come to paradise. 00:20:24.52\00:20:25.49 (girls laugh) 00:20:25.49\00:20:27.16 So you can see, there's a lot of color in the plants, 00:20:27.16\00:20:29.82 purples, oranges, yellows, 00:20:29.82\00:20:32.46 and the plants are growing really really well, 00:20:32.46\00:20:36.33 - [Lillian] So much different than when we were there 00:20:36.33\00:20:37.77 last time. 00:20:37.77\00:20:39.40 - [Marian] So much more color. 00:20:39.40\00:20:41.47 - [Lillian] Yeah. 00:20:41.47\00:20:43.04 - [Tim] Yeah we're just coming up 00:20:43.04\00:20:44.01 towards the Flintstones house, 00:20:44.01\00:20:47.48 (girls laugh) 00:20:47.48\00:20:48.51 which is gonna be a drinks shop, 00:20:48.51\00:20:50.38 and you can see how much the plants have, 00:20:50.38\00:20:53.48 well there wasn't any plants there before, 00:20:53.48\00:20:55.05 but how they've grown since we planted them, 00:20:55.05\00:20:57.99 we haven't actually set up the shop yet, 00:20:57.99\00:21:00.42 there's glass in the fish tank, 00:21:00.42\00:21:01.79 just here on the left, 00:21:01.79\00:21:03.16 here there's a little grass lawn, 00:21:03.16\00:21:04.49 and some bromeliads and coleus, 00:21:04.49\00:21:08.80 the colors are really popping nice. 00:21:08.80\00:21:11.80 - [Lillian] Was it really challenging to figure out 00:21:11.80\00:21:13.13 where to put the plants and like arrange everything? 00:21:13.13\00:21:16.24 - Yeah I spent hundreds of hours 00:21:16.24\00:21:17.91 looking at other peoples gardens on the internet, 00:21:17.91\00:21:20.61 studying what they've done 00:21:20.61\00:21:21.74 - [Girls] Wow, yeah. 00:21:21.74\00:21:22.81 - [Tim] And just praying about it ... 00:21:22.81\00:21:23.91 - I can't imagine like all the details are like 00:21:23.91\00:21:26.25 what girls wear, oh, that would overwhelm me. 00:21:26.25\00:21:29.02 - We'd lay out the plants, 00:21:29.02\00:21:30.09 have a look at it, no I don't like that, 00:21:30.09\00:21:31.22 rearrange then get it looking like... 00:21:31.22\00:21:33.46 - Oh my 00:21:33.46\00:21:35.02 - So how do you raise butterflies? 00:21:35.02\00:21:36.93 - Well you begin by collecting eggs, 00:21:36.93\00:21:39.43 so the butterfly breeders have to go out, 00:21:39.43\00:21:42.23 find the eggs on the special plants 00:21:42.23\00:21:44.53 that the butterfly will lay its eggs on, 00:21:44.53\00:21:46.27 we call that a host plant, 00:21:46.27\00:21:47.80 and then they'll take them back to the laboratory, 00:21:47.80\00:21:51.24 and wash them, sterilize them, 00:21:51.24\00:21:53.17 so there's no bacteria on the eggs 00:21:53.17\00:21:55.44 that could infect the caterpillars, 00:21:55.44\00:21:57.91 dry them and then just keep them safe, 00:21:57.91\00:22:01.38 for five, six or seven days, 00:22:01.38\00:22:03.79 until they hatch and then the hard work begins, 00:22:03.79\00:22:07.09 making sure that they've got enough food, 00:22:07.09\00:22:09.16 cleaning their poop out of their containers, 00:22:09.16\00:22:10.76 - [Lillian] Oh wow. 00:22:10.76\00:22:11.56 - [Tim] And they really poop, 00:22:11.56\00:22:12.93 and then everyday, they've got to be fed once or twice, 00:22:12.93\00:22:17.80 and the leaves that we're feeding them 00:22:18.90\00:22:20.10 have to be clean, sterilized, 00:22:20.10\00:22:21.74 to make sure theirs no bacteria and no virus, 00:22:21.74\00:22:24.17 and just keeping away parasites 00:22:24.17\00:22:26.68 that might come to try to infect them, 00:22:26.68\00:22:28.64 so we'll have an air conditioned room 00:22:28.64\00:22:30.35 which is where we keep them, 00:22:30.35\00:22:32.35 as everyday, twice a day, 00:22:32.35\00:22:34.65 somebody gonna have to check them 00:22:34.65\00:22:36.15 make sure they're doing okay, 00:22:36.15\00:22:37.72 they go through five stages of growth, as a caterpillar, 00:22:37.72\00:22:41.42 we call those instars, 00:22:41.42\00:22:43.22 and each instar, at the end of each instar, 00:22:43.22\00:22:45.79 they shed their skin, 00:22:45.79\00:22:47.66 it's like changing clothes, but they have to do that, 00:22:47.66\00:22:50.17 because everyday they double their weight. 00:22:50.17\00:22:52.70 - [Lillian] Oh my. 00:22:52.70\00:22:54.24 - [Tim] And as they double their weight of course, 00:22:54.24\00:22:55.50 they're getting bigger and bigger, 00:22:55.50\00:22:56.67 their skin just doesn't stretch enough, 00:22:56.67\00:22:58.17 so they have to change their skin 00:22:58.17\00:22:59.74 so they can have a bigger skin for the next stage of growth, 00:22:59.74\00:23:02.81 so depending on the caterpillar, 00:23:02.81\00:23:04.55 they might eat for twelve days, fifteen days, twenty days, 00:23:04.55\00:23:08.08 the bigger the caterpillar, the bigger the butterfly, 00:23:08.08\00:23:09.95 the longer they eat for, 00:23:09.95\00:23:11.59 and when they've finished their fifth instar 00:23:11.59\00:23:15.76 then they will sow some silk onto a branch 00:23:15.76\00:23:19.49 or whatever it is they are going to attach to, 00:23:19.49\00:23:21.96 and they make a hook in their tail end, 00:23:21.96\00:23:25.17 and they hook that into the silk, 00:23:25.17\00:23:26.84 and they hang and then they shed their last skin, 00:23:26.84\00:23:30.27 but instead of a new skin, they've got a chrysalis coating, 00:23:30.27\00:23:33.54 - Oh wow. 00:23:33.54\00:23:34.68 - And so that's when the miracle really happens, 00:23:34.68\00:23:37.55 because then all the cells, almost all the cells 00:23:37.55\00:23:41.05 break down into a liquid soup like thing 00:23:41.05\00:23:43.62 - Wow 00:23:43.62\00:23:44.45 - Oh my 00:23:44.45\00:23:45.55 - And a few cells begin building a butterfly. 00:23:45.55\00:23:47.16 - Wow 00:23:47.16\00:23:48.19 - So over the next five, six or seven days, 00:23:48.19\00:23:49.89 or longer, those cells have to build a butterfly. 00:23:49.89\00:23:52.66 - Wow 00:23:52.66\00:23:53.76 - Now it's a miracle that they can do that, 00:23:53.76\00:23:55.66 because they were a caterpillar and not a butterfly, 00:23:55.66\00:23:58.23 so all that information is recorded on the genetics 00:23:58.23\00:24:01.24 inside their cells. 00:24:01.24\00:24:02.50 - Wow 00:24:02.50\00:24:03.30 - Once the butterfly is built, 00:24:03.30\00:24:05.71 it knows just the right time, 00:24:05.71\00:24:08.04 to stretch, split open their cocoon, 00:24:08.04\00:24:10.61 and come out. 00:24:10.61\00:24:12.38 Now its got new legs, it didn't have legs like, 00:24:12.38\00:24:14.42 it had these little tiny legs before, 00:24:14.42\00:24:16.45 and now its got long legs but it knows how to use them 00:24:16.45\00:24:18.99 stand up, and then it's gonna unfold its wings, 00:24:18.99\00:24:22.52 its wings are all folded up, 00:24:22.52\00:24:25.33 and it has to pump blood into them, 00:24:25.33\00:24:27.83 stretch them out until they're flat, 00:24:27.83\00:24:30.17 and then hold them there until they dry, 00:24:30.17\00:24:33.13 once they dry, they can fly. 00:24:33.13\00:24:35.50 - [Lillian] Wow 00:24:35.50\00:24:36.74 - And so we have a butterfly, 00:24:36.74\00:24:38.47 so once the caterpillars become a chrysalis, 00:24:38.47\00:24:43.08 we're gonna have a special case, 00:24:43.08\00:24:45.21 where we hang them up, glass front, 00:24:45.21\00:24:47.12 so that our visitors can see them, 00:24:47.12\00:24:49.58 and as they come out of the chrysalis, 00:24:49.58\00:24:51.12 they can watch them come out, 00:24:51.12\00:24:52.65 watch them stretch their wings, 00:24:52.65\00:24:54.32 and if they're there at the right time 00:24:54.32\00:24:56.02 when the staff open the glass doors, 00:24:56.02\00:24:58.56 watch them fly out into the butterfly garden. 00:24:58.56\00:25:00.56 - Wow 00:25:00.56\00:25:01.33 - That's awesome 00:25:01.33\00:25:02.16 - That's cool 00:25:02.16\00:25:03.20 - So when the garden is finished, 00:25:03.20\00:25:04.27 how many people will you have working there? 00:25:04.27\00:25:07.10 - Well I'm thinking about thirty, 00:25:07.10\00:25:09.27 because we've got ticket sales, 00:25:09.27\00:25:12.37 we've got drinks and the restaurant, 00:25:12.37\00:25:16.98 we need people in the education area, 00:25:16.98\00:25:19.71 we need maybe tour guides, 00:25:19.71\00:25:21.68 for people who really want to know the butterflies better, 00:25:21.68\00:25:23.92 someone to tell them about it, 00:25:23.92\00:25:25.52 we need people to sell in the souvenir shop, 00:25:25.52\00:25:28.59 and we need a manger, accountant, cleaners, 00:25:28.59\00:25:32.23 gardeners, so they're lots of people 00:25:33.23\00:25:35.83 so that's thirty people all together. 00:25:35.83\00:25:37.90 - Wow. 00:25:37.90\00:25:39.27 - So since you've built the whole thing by faith, 00:25:39.27\00:25:41.40 where did all the money come from? 00:25:41.40\00:25:43.47 - God is able to touch the lives of people, 00:25:43.47\00:25:47.11 impress them to give 00:25:47.11\00:25:49.11 and so we've been praying all through this process, 00:25:49.11\00:25:52.11 that God would inspire people to give, 00:25:52.11\00:25:54.75 we don't ask them for money, 00:25:54.75\00:25:56.48 and it's just a miracle, 00:25:56.48\00:25:58.42 we don't always have the money to do this, 00:25:58.42\00:26:00.36 but we just keep working in faith 00:26:00.36\00:26:01.86 that God is going to provide 00:26:01.86\00:26:03.43 and it's just amazing to see what God has done so far. 00:26:03.43\00:26:06.66 - Yeah, it is incredible. 00:26:06.66\00:26:08.43 - So how'd you learn how to manage all the plants 00:26:08.43\00:26:11.53 and butterflies and stuff? 00:26:11.53\00:26:12.93 - That actually goes back a long way, 00:26:12.93\00:26:14.87 my grandfather was a gardener, 00:26:14.87\00:26:16.87 and I learnt to garden, to take care of flowers from him, 00:26:16.87\00:26:20.94 and then I studied biology at university 00:26:20.94\00:26:23.78 and so I learnt more about plants, about animals, 00:26:23.78\00:26:26.55 and so, for many years, 00:26:26.55\00:26:28.98 I haven't been very much in the biology area, 00:26:28.98\00:26:31.69 but God has brought me back to an area that I started in 00:26:31.69\00:26:35.69 and an area that I love 00:26:35.69\00:26:36.93 and giving me the opportunity to do the things 00:26:36.93\00:26:39.13 that I really love to do. 00:26:39.13\00:26:40.60 - That's really cool. 00:26:40.60\00:26:41.93 - Yeah, how God just like had those natural interests 00:26:41.93\00:26:44.13 in you, and then now you can use them, 00:26:44.13\00:26:47.94 and be witnessing for him at the same time. 00:26:47.94\00:26:50.61 - Yeah and also to share them with other people, 00:26:50.61\00:26:52.61 so we've grown the plants and flowers, 00:26:52.61\00:26:54.94 people have come to love doing the same, 00:26:54.94\00:26:57.71 and as we work with the butterflies, 00:26:57.71\00:26:59.18 yeah, they've come to love the butterflies, 00:26:59.18\00:27:01.05 so it's a part of passing it all on too. 00:27:01.05\00:27:03.49 - Yeah 00:27:03.49\00:27:04.59 - So should everyone who wants to reach people 00:27:04.59\00:27:06.29 for God build a butterfly garden? 00:27:06.29\00:27:08.09 - I don't think so. 00:27:08.09\00:27:09.46 When you look at the flowers, you look at the butterflies, 00:27:09.46\00:27:12.46 the animals, there's just so much variety out there, 00:27:12.46\00:27:15.36 and I believe in God gives each person 00:27:15.36\00:27:17.23 different skills, different talents, 00:27:17.23\00:27:19.20 and he gives them a different calling, 00:27:19.20\00:27:21.27 so it wouldn't work if everybody was doing the same thing, 00:27:21.27\00:27:25.91 so there are many ways to reach people 00:27:25.91\00:27:28.44 with the love of Jesus, 00:27:28.44\00:27:29.94 and people should use the skills 00:27:29.94\00:27:31.61 and the talents that they've been given to do that. 00:27:31.61\00:27:34.35 - Thank you so much for being on the show with us today. 00:27:34.35\00:27:36.52 - It's been a great pleasure to be here 00:27:36.52\00:27:38.72 and I look forward to seeing both of you 00:27:38.72\00:27:40.26 at butterfly paradise, 00:27:40.26\00:27:41.56 - See you next time on MissionTrek. 00:27:48.16\00:27:50.80 (instrumental music) 00:27:50.80\00:27:54.04
