(instrumental music) 00:00:00.66\00:00:03.26 - [Mary Ann] We've grown up in the church 00:00:05.63\00:00:06.97 and have always been somewhat involved in the outreach. 00:00:06.97\00:00:10.04 But how can we get involved in missions overseas? 00:00:10.04\00:00:13.07 My name is Mary Ann. 00:00:13.07\00:00:15.21 - [Lilyann] And I'm Lilyann. 00:00:15.21\00:00:16.95 We wanted to find out. 00:00:16.95\00:00:18.71 Join us on our journey. 00:00:18.71\00:00:20.92 (gong sounds) To discover the culture, 00:00:20.92\00:00:24.12 the lifestyle-- 00:00:24.12\00:00:25.39 - [Mary Ann] The need, and the mission-- 00:00:25.39\00:00:27.72 - [Lilyann] In two of Southeast Asia's 00:00:27.72\00:00:29.36 least-reached countries. 00:00:29.36\00:00:30.86 - [Mary Ann] Welcome to Mission Trek. 00:00:31.93\00:00:33.93 - [Lilyann] Welcome back. 00:00:38.63\00:00:40.17 - In the last episode, we traveled back to Bangkok 00:00:40.17\00:00:42.34 where we visited the slum and learned more 00:00:42.34\00:00:44.14 about Thai culture from the Witsits. 00:00:44.14\00:00:46.17 - This is a map of Southeast Asia. 00:00:46.17\00:00:48.48 We have been in Thailand and now we will be traveling 00:00:48.48\00:00:51.25 from Bangkok to Cambodia, where we are going to visit 00:00:51.25\00:00:54.68 Tim Maddocks and see his projects. 00:00:54.68\00:00:56.79 - Traveling in Cambodia is easy 00:00:56.79\00:00:58.52 because the country's very tourist-friendly and cheap. 00:00:58.52\00:01:00.96 Thailand is pretty much the same way. 00:01:00.96\00:01:02.72 - But traveling between the two countries 00:01:02.72\00:01:04.43 is a little more difficult, because crossing the border 00:01:04.43\00:01:07.03 takes a lot of time. 00:01:07.03\00:01:08.40 - Yeah. 00:01:08.40\00:01:09.46 Cambodia has a very dark history. 00:01:09.46\00:01:11.30 They had a dictator named Pol Pot, who ruled the country 00:01:11.30\00:01:14.27 from 1975 to 1979. 00:01:14.27\00:01:16.91 He established the Khmer Rouge, who under his leadership, 00:01:16.91\00:01:20.48 killed 1/4 of the entire population. 00:01:20.48\00:01:22.74 - After Pol Pot died, the Khmer Rouge continued fighting 00:01:22.74\00:01:25.78 for control in a bloody civil war. 00:01:25.78\00:01:28.15 But they were eventually overthrown. 00:01:28.15\00:01:30.12 Even now, the country is still recovering 00:01:30.12\00:01:32.49 from its destruction. 00:01:32.49\00:01:33.86 - Tim and Wendy Maddocks moved to Cambodia in 1992 00:01:33.86\00:01:37.43 with their two young sons. 00:01:37.43\00:01:38.99 They moved into the country 00:01:38.99\00:01:40.53 right in the middle of the civil war. 00:01:40.53\00:01:42.50 - Because of this they are faced with many difficulties, 00:01:42.50\00:01:45.47 but with God's help, they persevered. 00:01:45.47\00:01:47.50 - From the very beginning, they dedicated their lives 00:01:47.50\00:01:49.90 to serving these people, and have always made it a point 00:01:49.90\00:01:52.57 to live like they do. 00:01:52.57\00:01:54.08 - But before we get to them, we met up with a friend 00:01:54.08\00:01:56.31 who took us across the border, and on the way we stopped 00:01:56.31\00:01:59.28 at a monkey temple. 00:01:59.28\00:02:00.42 We were crammed in this truck 00:02:01.52\00:02:03.05 with all of our stuff. 00:02:03.05\00:02:05.12 A little way out of town, we got hungry, 00:02:05.12\00:02:07.79 so we stopped at the only vegetarian restaurant 00:02:07.79\00:02:09.99 we could find. 00:02:09.99\00:02:11.23 You have to cook your own food. 00:02:11.23\00:02:13.80 So we ordered all the vegetables they had. 00:02:13.80\00:02:16.50 It looks really bland, and it was. 00:02:16.50\00:02:18.83 (Lilyann laughs) 00:02:18.83\00:02:20.30 We continued our ride on into the night. 00:02:20.30\00:02:22.50 We got to see elephants though. 00:02:23.94\00:02:25.77 The next morning we stopped at what we call Monkey Rock, 00:02:27.71\00:02:31.08 'cause there's lots of monkeys and a big rock. 00:02:31.08\00:02:33.82 There were steep stairs that went up 00:02:34.88\00:02:36.18 to a spectacular view through a big hole in the rock. 00:02:36.18\00:02:40.02 The entire countryside was flat 00:02:40.02\00:02:42.12 except for this one rock sticking up. 00:02:42.12\00:02:44.73 It was amazing. 00:02:44.73\00:02:45.93 - [Mary Ann] From there it was a short run to the border. 00:02:48.26\00:02:50.83 - [Lilyann] To cross the border 00:02:50.83\00:02:52.30 you have to get your passport stamped out of Thailand, 00:02:52.30\00:02:55.00 then walk a quarter mile through no man's land. 00:02:55.00\00:02:57.81 We are not in a country at all. 00:02:57.81\00:03:00.21 Finally, you go into another building 00:03:00.21\00:03:02.71 and get stamped into Cambodia. 00:03:02.71\00:03:04.71 Cambodia seems much poorer and less developed. 00:03:06.61\00:03:09.82 Check out the load on this motorcycle trailer, 00:03:09.82\00:03:12.42 and there's a kid riding on top of it! 00:03:12.42\00:03:14.39 (instrumental music) 00:03:15.29\00:03:18.43 Just a few hours later, we arrived at Wat Preah Yesu. 00:03:27.47\00:03:31.24 (light instrumental music) 00:03:31.24\00:03:34.88 (laughing) 00:03:39.75\00:03:42.12 We're in Cambodia at Wat Preah Yesu with the Maddocks, 00:03:42.12\00:03:46.35 and we are interested in how this place got started. 00:03:46.35\00:03:49.89 So what did it take to start a ministry, 00:03:49.89\00:03:52.39 a project, from scratch? 00:03:52.39\00:03:53.66 - I think the biggest thing was faith. 00:03:54.76\00:03:56.90 Because it's like we're leaving a paid job, 00:03:56.90\00:03:59.57 we're leaving the security of the town, 00:04:00.70\00:04:03.17 and we're trusting God to provide all our needs. 00:04:03.17\00:04:06.17 One thing God said to me very clearly 00:04:06.17\00:04:08.18 was that we weren't to ask anybody for funds 00:04:08.18\00:04:10.91 to do what he was asking us to do. 00:04:10.91\00:04:13.05 Just ask him and he'll deal with it. 00:04:13.05\00:04:15.12 And so that's a whole new way of life. 00:04:15.12\00:04:17.69 And I've been used do working where we'd ask people 00:04:17.69\00:04:21.09 for money to do projects, 00:04:21.09\00:04:23.59 and now that's no longer an option. 00:04:23.59\00:04:26.39 (laughs) 00:04:26.39\00:04:27.50 So trusting God that when he's promised us 00:04:27.50\00:04:30.57 he will supply all our needs, that he really means it. 00:04:30.57\00:04:33.87 - So how did you hear God's voice 00:04:33.87\00:04:36.00 telling you to start this project? 00:04:36.00\00:04:38.94 - Well it all happened back in 1995. 00:04:38.94\00:04:41.88 We were living in Siem Reap, in the town, working with ADRA. 00:04:41.88\00:04:46.51 And in my early morning devotionals I began to hear God 00:04:46.51\00:04:50.99 sort of speaking to me in like an audible way. 00:04:50.99\00:04:53.82 It was no loud voice but to me it was audible. 00:04:53.82\00:04:56.86 And he began laying out this plan that he had for our family 00:04:56.86\00:05:00.70 to get involved in. 00:05:00.70\00:05:02.33 And it was to set up a center where new converts 00:05:02.33\00:05:07.40 to Christianity here in Cambodia 00:05:08.20\00:05:09.60 could be trained to become leaders in their churches 00:05:09.60\00:05:12.11 and to go out and start new churches. 00:05:12.11\00:05:14.38 Also to plant a church in our local community. 00:05:14.38\00:05:17.91 And so as I listened to God, I got the picture in my mind 00:05:17.91\00:05:22.98 of what he wanted us to do. 00:05:23.79\00:05:24.92 Then I had to take the idea to Wendy 00:05:24.92\00:05:27.46 and ask her for her opinion. 00:05:27.46\00:05:29.22 What was your opinion? 00:05:30.69\00:05:31.73 (Wendy laughs) 00:05:31.73\00:05:33.23 - I thought he was crazy. 00:05:33.23\00:05:35.60 I didn't hear God's voice speaking to me 00:05:35.60\00:05:37.80 so I was wondering who it was that was really talking to him 00:05:37.80\00:05:41.10 to take us out of the town 00:05:41.10\00:05:43.17 and come and live in the rice fields 00:05:43.17\00:05:45.24 where there were no houses and no people 00:05:45.24\00:05:47.14 and I wasn't sure what to think. 00:05:47.14\00:05:50.11 - I think you need a little more information. 00:05:50.11\00:05:51.88 You see, at the time, the Khmer Rouge 00:05:51.88\00:05:55.78 was still a fighting force not so far away from Siem Reap. 00:05:55.78\00:05:59.69 And we had two small children. 00:06:00.56\00:06:02.66 The youngest was four and the oldest was seven and 1/2. 00:06:02.66\00:06:07.73 And so we're moving them out into the rice fields, 00:06:09.06\00:06:11.93 away from the security of the town, 00:06:11.93\00:06:14.17 and we're gonna be living in a little thatched house 00:06:14.17\00:06:18.04 away from the village as well, fairly isolated. 00:06:18.04\00:06:21.24 So it was really quite a big transition for our family. 00:06:21.24\00:06:25.38 - So then what happened next? 00:06:25.38\00:06:27.32 - So we had to find land, we bought the land, 00:06:27.32\00:06:29.72 the money we did that with was our own personal money 00:06:29.72\00:06:32.12 and a donation from a friend. 00:06:32.12\00:06:33.89 And this is another thing that God said, 00:06:35.32\00:06:37.79 he wanted us to put everything we had into this project. 00:06:37.79\00:06:41.33 And when it ran out, he would do the rest. 00:06:41.33\00:06:44.07 So we didn't have very much. 00:06:45.10\00:06:46.10 We had about 20, $22,000. 00:06:46.10\00:06:49.04 And so we began pouring that into the project 00:06:49.04\00:06:51.21 and it doesn't take very long before it disappears. 00:06:51.21\00:06:54.41 But we've never been without. 00:06:54.41\00:06:56.48 - How long have you been doing this? 00:06:56.48\00:06:59.18 - Well, we came here to this land, this place, 00:06:59.18\00:07:03.82 in June of 1996. 00:07:03.82\00:07:08.32 And right now we're in 2017, so that's 21 years. 00:07:10.39\00:07:15.43 - There's a lot more projects going on 00:07:17.13\00:07:18.77 than when you first started. 00:07:18.77\00:07:20.40 - One of the things that God mercifully did for us 00:07:20.40\00:07:23.91 was not tell us everything at the beginning. 00:07:23.91\00:07:26.47 Because if he'd told us everything 00:07:26.47\00:07:28.64 I think I would have just thrown up my hands 00:07:28.64\00:07:30.35 and said, God, find somebody else, I can't do that. 00:07:30.35\00:07:34.68 But if we will trust God, 00:07:34.68\00:07:36.62 we can do all things together with God. 00:07:36.62\00:07:38.75 And so mercifully, God added one project at a time. 00:07:38.75\00:07:43.16 So after we got the training program going 00:07:43.16\00:07:46.36 for new converts to Adventism, then we added a school. 00:07:46.36\00:07:51.40 And then a number of years later we added an orphanage, 00:07:52.77\00:07:55.54 and then a media center, and then another school, 00:07:55.54\00:08:00.48 and then another school. 00:08:00.48\00:08:02.61 This year we plan to add another school. 00:08:02.61\00:08:05.31 As God builds our faith and our trust in him, 00:08:05.31\00:08:09.22 he gives us more to do 00:08:09.22\00:08:11.02 and takes us deeper into this journey with him. 00:08:11.02\00:08:14.72 - And there's this really cool project 00:08:14.72\00:08:16.12 that we've heard about that you're working on currently, 00:08:16.12\00:08:18.86 the butterfly garden. 00:08:18.86\00:08:20.56 - Yeah, that's a really cool project, like you say. 00:08:20.56\00:08:24.43 And here is where our ministry is gonna take a shift. 00:08:24.43\00:08:27.77 Because we've been totally faith-based 00:08:27.77\00:08:30.77 and the butterfly project is a tourism project 00:08:30.77\00:08:33.61 where we'll have a very large butterfly garden, 00:08:33.61\00:08:36.28 beautifully landscaped, waterfalls, fish ponds, et 00:08:36.28\00:08:39.91 cetera. We're hoping that some of the more than two million 00:08:39.91\00:08:42.52 tourists that come to Siem Reap each year will come to visit 00:08:42.52\00:08:45.95 here to the butterfly garden and they'll pay to come in 00:08:45.95\00:08:48.72 and they'll pay for food, et cetera, 00:08:48.72\00:08:51.06 and that way our ministry 00:08:51.06\00:08:53.13 can become totally self-supporting. 00:08:53.13\00:08:55.20 It goes beyond that because the life cycle of a butterfly 00:08:55.20\00:08:58.77 is a beautiful way to see how God is creator. 00:08:58.77\00:09:02.74 And so as people come through the butterfly garden, 00:09:04.01\00:09:07.18 meet the butterflies, 00:09:07.18\00:09:08.61 we want them also to meet God, the creator. 00:09:08.61\00:09:11.05 - Is there anything that you would like to say 00:09:11.05\00:09:13.52 to young people like us that are watching? 00:09:13.52\00:09:16.52 Like what they could do to prepare or to help now? 00:09:17.89\00:09:22.59 - One of the most important things for young people is to, 00:09:23.96\00:09:27.40 to listen to God 00:09:27.40\00:09:31.67 through the Bible, 00:09:31.67\00:09:32.67 through their parents, godly parents, 00:09:32.67\00:09:35.34 through godly friends, godly teachers, 00:09:35.34\00:09:38.47 and to believe that God has a work for young people to do. 00:09:39.84\00:09:44.91 It may be something small, it may be something big, 00:09:48.55\00:09:52.55 but that God has a work for every young person to do. 00:09:52.55\00:09:56.36 - If young people would just give their lives to Christ 00:09:57.73\00:10:00.66 and say I will do whatever you want me to do, 00:10:00.66\00:10:03.50 even if it's different from what I wanna do, 00:10:03.50\00:10:06.03 the journey that God will take them on 00:10:06.03\00:10:08.60 will be just so incredible 00:10:08.60\00:10:10.67 they will never even regret not doing 00:10:10.67\00:10:12.47 what they wanted to do. 00:10:12.47\00:10:13.68 We started out as missionaries when we were 21 and 20, 00:10:14.98\00:10:19.05 and it's more than 30 years now 00:10:19.05\00:10:21.42 and it's just been an amazing life, an amazing journey. 00:10:21.42\00:10:24.92 Today our children have grown up, they've got married, 00:10:24.92\00:10:27.82 but they work with us here in Cambodia. 00:10:27.82\00:10:29.99 Yeah, if we had done what we originally intended to do 00:10:31.36\00:10:36.36 we'd be just living a boring life back in Australia 00:10:37.77\00:10:40.37 where we came from. (laughs) 00:10:40.37\00:10:41.70 But living for God, it's exciting. 00:10:41.70\00:10:45.01 And so I encourage young people, get down on your knees 00:10:45.01\00:10:47.81 and ask God, what do you want me to do for your work? 00:10:47.81\00:10:51.51 And just surrender all. 00:10:51.51\00:10:53.68 - Well thank you guys for telling us 00:10:53.68\00:10:55.52 a little bit about your life and mission field and-- 00:10:55.52\00:10:58.49 - Thank you for interviewing us. 00:10:58.49\00:10:59.72 - Thank you. 00:10:59.72\00:11:01.19 (piano music) 00:11:01.19\00:11:03.76 - We're at the Wat Preah Yesu Children's Home, 00:11:16.40\00:11:19.71 which is actually undergoing a name change 00:11:19.71\00:11:21.58 and becoming Butterfly Paradise Children's Home. 00:11:21.58\00:11:24.25 And it's 5:00 and the kids are out playing, 00:11:24.25\00:11:27.75 the sun's going down, it's a great time here, 00:11:27.75\00:11:29.65 everybody's happy and yeah, 00:11:29.65\00:11:32.39 let's go and have a look at the kids. 00:11:32.39\00:11:34.29 (laughing) 00:11:37.43\00:11:40.60 So here in the orphanage the kids all live in families. 00:11:40.60\00:11:44.93 So you have a mom and dad taking care of their own children 00:11:44.93\00:11:49.60 and up to 16 orphan children. 00:11:49.60\00:11:52.04 So it's a big family but they do everything together. 00:11:53.48\00:11:55.18 They cook together, they worship together, 00:11:55.18\00:11:58.25 they garden together, they go for outings together, 00:11:58.25\00:12:01.22 so it's just like being part of a huge family. 00:12:01.22\00:12:04.09 - So are they all true orphans 00:12:05.69\00:12:07.19 or are they just neglected or not wanted? 00:12:07.19\00:12:09.92 - About 70% of the kids are true orphans. 00:12:09.92\00:12:13.23 Then we have abandoned kids, 00:12:13.23\00:12:15.93 and then we have kids who have a living parent 00:12:15.93\00:12:19.27 but for one reason or another it's not suitable 00:12:19.27\00:12:22.20 or not safe for them to be with their living parent. 00:12:22.20\00:12:25.01 So pretty much all of them need to be here. 00:12:25.01\00:12:29.34 And being here's good for them, they get three meals a day, 00:12:30.68\00:12:35.45 they have a safe place to live, they get good education, 00:12:36.79\00:12:40.62 bilingual education in the school. 00:12:40.62\00:12:42.82 They have pretty much all their needs met. 00:12:44.96\00:12:47.23 - Seems like a pretty nice place. 00:12:47.23\00:12:49.20 - Yeah. 00:12:49.20\00:12:50.43 - So are any of these kids HIV kids? 00:12:50.43\00:12:52.53 - Actually we have 27 who are HIV positive. 00:12:53.94\00:12:58.11 They all take antiretroviral drugs 00:12:58.11\00:13:00.24 and pretty much all of them are in really good health. 00:13:00.24\00:13:03.01 - Do you have any stories of the kids that you could tell? 00:13:03.01\00:13:07.95 - I can tell you the story of Chay Ma here. 00:13:07.95\00:13:10.32 One day I got a call to the village just down the road 00:13:10.32\00:13:13.46 and the village leader had a child for me 00:13:13.46\00:13:18.53 and the child was a two year old and weighed five kilograms. 00:13:19.86\00:13:24.23 And the mother and father were both living 00:13:24.23\00:13:26.00 but the child was living with a grandmother who had dementia 00:13:26.00\00:13:29.00 and the parents were alcoholics. 00:13:29.00\00:13:31.11 And so I took this child and we gave her a name, Naomi, 00:13:31.11\00:13:35.21 but she was so weak and thin 00:13:35.21\00:13:37.01 she looked like she'd come out of a famine in Africa. 00:13:37.01\00:13:39.81 I took her to the children's hospital. 00:13:39.81\00:13:42.08 And when the nurses saw her at the children's hospital, 00:13:42.08\00:13:46.02 they said, hey, she's got a twin sister here. 00:13:46.02\00:13:48.72 And they said, do you wanna see? 00:13:49.52\00:13:52.53 I said yeah, sure, take me to her. 00:13:52.53\00:13:54.66 And so they took me to another ward and Chay Ma was there. 00:13:54.66\00:13:58.20 Two years old, five kilograms, 00:13:58.20\00:14:01.04 big belly, skinny little legs, skinny little arms, 00:14:01.04\00:14:03.77 looked just like twins. 00:14:03.77\00:14:06.34 And they said, Chay Ma's mother had abandoned her 00:14:07.48\00:14:09.88 at the hospital and they'd tried to contact her 00:14:09.88\00:14:11.65 but hadn't been able to contact her. 00:14:11.65\00:14:13.72 And then they said, would you take her? 00:14:13.72\00:14:16.08 And I said sure. 00:14:16.08\00:14:17.15 So two weeks later I took the two girls home 00:14:17.15\00:14:20.59 and they're both healthy and happy, beautiful kids. 00:14:21.96\00:14:26.59 - Wow. 00:14:27.13\00:14:28.40 - You know sometimes I ask lots of questions 00:14:28.40\00:14:30.27 before I'll accept a child, but when I saw the other girl, 00:14:30.27\00:14:33.97 Naomi, it's like, I'm taking her. 00:14:33.97\00:14:37.67 And if I hadn't have taken her 00:14:37.67\00:14:38.74 she probably would have died within a week. 00:14:38.74\00:14:40.88 - Is there anything that we could do or those watching? 00:14:42.28\00:14:45.18 - The best way you can help yourself 00:14:45.18\00:14:47.32 is to come as a volunteer and teach English in the school. 00:14:47.32\00:14:50.95 Volunteers come usually six to 12 months at a time, 00:14:50.95\00:14:54.42 could stay longer. 00:14:54.42\00:14:55.46 Usually finished year 12 by the time they come, 00:14:56.56\00:14:58.93 but not always, some come a little bit earlier. 00:14:58.93\00:15:01.83 And the other way you can help is by sending money. 00:15:01.83\00:15:05.83 It costs us about $75 a month per child to keep them here. 00:15:05.83\00:15:10.91 - Well thanks for sharing with us. 00:15:14.11\00:15:15.68 - Okay, most happy to share. 00:15:15.68\00:15:17.38 - We're here with Caleb who grew up in the mission field 00:15:18.78\00:15:21.72 and we were wondering what that was like. 00:15:21.72\00:15:23.89 - How long have you lived here? 00:15:23.89\00:15:25.02 - First 20 years. 00:15:25.02\00:15:27.02 - How old were you when you guys moved here? 00:15:27.02\00:15:28.92 - I was four years old and my brother was just turning one. 00:15:28.92\00:15:33.86 - Oh wow, so you guys were really little. 00:15:33.86\00:15:35.96 - Yes. 00:15:35.96\00:15:36.77 - What was it like growing up 00:15:36.77\00:15:38.13 being like the only white person, you and your family? 00:15:38.13\00:15:41.44 So many Cambodians, 00:15:41.44\00:15:42.87 like, did people look at you differently, or? 00:15:42.87\00:15:46.94 - In school would have been the best example 00:15:46.94\00:15:50.28 because I went to the local school, government school, 00:15:50.28\00:15:55.35 and I was the only white person in the entire school, 00:15:56.69\00:15:59.45 not just in my class. 00:15:59.45\00:16:01.29 I don't really remember too much, 00:16:01.29\00:16:03.76 apart from that everyone seemed to like me 00:16:03.76\00:16:07.10 guess I'm the only one white color 00:16:07.10\00:16:09.53 so you gotta like someone like that. 00:16:09.53\00:16:11.00 (laughing) 00:16:11.00\00:16:12.37 My teachers sort of, I was their pet most of the time, 00:16:12.37\00:16:16.30 they liked me that much. 00:16:16.30\00:16:18.47 I was good friends with the principal 00:16:18.47\00:16:19.97 in both schools I went to. 00:16:19.97\00:16:22.08 So yeah, I didn't really notice the difference as such 00:16:22.08\00:16:25.85 in school and I didn't get picked on too much. 00:16:25.85\00:16:28.88 I'm a little bit taller than most Cambodians, 00:16:28.88\00:16:30.75 so that would have helped. 00:16:30.75\00:16:31.85 (laughs) 00:16:31.85\00:16:34.59 So not too many differences there. 00:16:34.59\00:16:37.13 - How old do you have to be to become a missionary? 00:16:37.13\00:16:39.93 - As a child you can share Jesus with the people around you. 00:16:39.93\00:16:44.20 A child being whatever age you are. 00:16:44.20\00:16:47.77 If you can speak, so maybe a little bit older 00:16:48.84\00:16:51.61 than one or two years old, I don't know, 00:16:51.61\00:16:53.81 but at one or two years old you're still very cute 00:16:53.81\00:16:56.38 and lots of people want to see you, 00:16:56.38\00:16:58.11 so if you make good friends with them even at that age, 00:16:58.11\00:17:00.62 or your parents let you be around them, 00:17:00.62\00:17:03.62 eventually when you can talk, then maybe you'll get a chance 00:17:03.62\00:17:06.96 to share Jesus with them. 00:17:06.96\00:17:08.56 So probably there's no age limit. 00:17:08.56\00:17:10.93 And as an adult it's just a little bit harder 00:17:10.93\00:17:13.19 to learn the new language, but you can still do something. 00:17:13.19\00:17:16.70 - Well thank you so much for sharing, 00:17:17.80\00:17:19.90 letting nus ask you some questions, and-- 00:17:19.90\00:17:22.40 - No problem. 00:17:22.40\00:17:23.91 Glad I could share. 00:17:23.91\00:17:25.64 (light instrumental music) 00:17:25.64\00:17:29.21 - Now we're here with Shannon who also grew up in Cambodia 00:17:29.21\00:17:32.81 and we wanted to ask him as well a few questions 00:17:32.81\00:17:36.32 about his experience. 00:17:36.32\00:17:38.02 What was it like growing up in the mission field? 00:17:38.02\00:17:40.59 - I'm not really sure about what it's like 00:17:40.59\00:17:45.26 'cause pretty much I haven't known anything else. 00:17:45.26\00:17:48.53 So it's pretty my life. 00:17:48.53\00:17:50.60 Growing up has been just normal growing up. 00:17:50.60\00:17:54.27 - Well, you don't know any differences. 00:17:54.27\00:17:56.64 - That's the one, yeah, yeah yeah. 00:17:56.64\00:17:58.17 - So do you think of this as your home? 00:17:58.17\00:18:00.81 - Pretty much, yeah. 00:18:00.81\00:18:02.48 I feel Cambodian. 00:18:02.48\00:18:04.51 (laughs) On the inside I'm a Cambodian. 00:18:04.51\00:18:07.02 On the outside I'm a something else. 00:18:07.02\00:18:09.38 (laughs) 00:18:09.38\00:18:11.62 - How do you feel when you go back to Australia? 00:18:11.62\00:18:14.02 - I feel out of my comfort zone. 00:18:14.02\00:18:15.96 Australia is very different. 00:18:17.19\00:18:19.06 I get culture shock when I go to Australia. 00:18:19.06\00:18:21.30 (laughs) 00:18:21.30\00:18:22.80 - Wow. 00:18:22.80\00:18:23.90 That's so opposite from us coming here, 00:18:23.90\00:18:27.14 it's like culture shock. 00:18:27.14\00:18:29.04 And we wanna go back home. 00:18:29.84\00:18:31.27 So for you, you wanna come back here as home. 00:18:32.37\00:18:35.74 - Yeah, I always missed here when I went to Australia. 00:18:35.74\00:18:38.11 - Do you wish that you had grown up in Australia 00:18:38.11\00:18:40.85 or are you-- 00:18:40.85\00:18:41.92 - I actually quite liked growing up here, so. 00:18:43.69\00:18:46.12 And I can't wish for much better. 00:18:46.12\00:18:48.09 (laughs) - So what do you 00:18:48.09\00:18:49.76 like about here? 00:19:11.08\00:19:13.45 - Well, I'm a multitask person. 00:19:13.45\00:19:16.72 I work in our media center as video editor, cameraman, 00:19:18.09\00:19:21.92 everything that's needed. 00:19:22.96\00:19:24.69 I do pathfinder, I'm the pathfinder director for here. 00:19:24.69\00:19:28.10 - So is there an opportunity for a pathfinder, 00:19:28.10\00:19:31.03 maybe if they're in America, to come over here 00:19:31.03\00:19:32.60 and help train and stuff? 00:19:32.60\00:19:36.04 - Yep, yeah, we're open. 00:19:36.04\00:19:37.54 (girls laugh) 00:19:37.54\00:19:38.97 Yeah we can. 00:19:38.97\00:19:40.08 If there's people who wanna come out and help, 00:19:40.08\00:19:42.78 even for a short time, it's nice, we really need 00:19:42.78\00:19:47.05 specialized people who know how to do pathfinders 00:19:47.05\00:19:49.75 and can actually teach it, so yeah, it's good work, yeah. 00:19:49.75\00:19:54.06 - Thank you for sharing with us. 00:19:54.06\00:19:55.79 - Thank you. 00:19:55.79\00:19:56.69 - God has really blessed the Maddocks 00:19:57.76\00:19:59.23 and it's encouraging for me to see 00:19:59.23\00:20:00.86 how they haven't let challenges hold them back 00:20:00.86\00:20:02.93 from doing what God has called them to do. 00:20:02.93\00:20:04.23 - Uh-uh, and it's so amazing how many projects 00:20:04.23\00:20:06.87 have been started since they went to the mission field. 00:20:06.87\00:20:09.54 - Yeah, and they're not stressed out, 00:20:09.54\00:20:11.54 they're really happy people. 00:20:11.54\00:20:13.01 Whatever they're doing, whether they're working 00:20:13.01\00:20:14.88 or playing, or anything. 00:20:14.88\00:20:16.81 - And I think it just shows how if we're doing 00:20:16.81\00:20:19.41 what God has asked us to do, we are given his peace, 00:20:19.41\00:20:22.42 no matter what it is we're doing. 00:20:22.42\00:20:24.12 - Yeah, and God has a specific task 00:20:24.12\00:20:26.52 that he calls each of us to do. 00:20:26.52\00:20:28.22 And a great example of that is Kathleen and Ely. 00:20:28.22\00:20:31.03 They had the idea to use horses as therapy for the kids. 00:20:31.03\00:20:35.06 - Yeah, and we had the privilege of getting to visit 00:20:35.06\00:20:37.27 this project and see what it was all about 00:20:37.27\00:20:39.63 while we were visiting Wat Preah Yesu. 00:20:39.63\00:20:42.37 (instrumental music) 00:20:42.37\00:20:45.44 (people chattering) 00:20:54.98\00:20:57.95 - We're here at Hoof Trek with Kathleen and Ely 00:21:03.79\00:21:07.13 and we wanted to ask them some questions 00:21:07.13\00:21:09.36 about their amazing ministry that they're doing here 00:21:09.36\00:21:12.10 at Wat Preah Yesu. 00:21:12.10\00:21:13.44 - So how did you guys get an idea to use horses 00:21:13.44\00:21:15.90 as a ministry tool? 00:21:15.90\00:21:17.31 - Well, I always wanted to work with horses and kids 00:21:17.31\00:21:20.51 back in Australia. 00:21:20.51\00:21:22.48 I was working at a school just as a volunteer 00:21:22.48\00:21:25.18 with some of the horses and kids 00:21:25.18\00:21:26.95 who were having behavioral difficulties 00:21:26.95\00:21:30.32 or struggling with their schoolwork and stuff, 00:21:30.32\00:21:33.05 and I saw the benefits that it had with them 00:21:33.05\00:21:34.89 and with our kids here we always have challenges 00:21:34.89\00:21:38.36 in the classroom, so we're kind of always thinking 00:21:38.36\00:21:40.20 of new ideas that we can use with them, yeah, 00:21:40.20\00:21:42.56 so we thought of horses. 00:21:42.56\00:21:44.00 - How do the horses help the behavioral problems 00:21:44.00\00:21:46.03 with the kids? 00:21:46.03\00:21:47.50 - Well, working with gigantic, slightly scary animals, 00:21:47.50\00:21:52.44 especially when they're so small, can often-- 00:21:53.64\00:21:55.18 A horse is a reactive animal, 00:21:56.08\00:21:57.61 so it reacts, they're prey animals, they react to fear, 00:21:57.61\00:21:59.38 they react to bossiness, and we find that the kids here, 00:21:59.38\00:22:03.85 a lot of 'em are very hyperactive 00:22:03.85\00:22:05.59 and they have to change their behavior around the horse 00:22:05.59\00:22:08.62 and learn to control themselves 00:22:08.62\00:22:10.63 so that they can get the horse 00:22:10.63\00:22:11.63 to do what they want it to do. 00:22:11.63\00:22:13.80 We're not just using it though for self-awareness stuff 00:22:13.80\00:22:16.87 with them but also for them to learn more about God 00:22:16.87\00:22:20.14 and how much he loves them too, 00:22:20.14\00:22:21.47 as they try to make a gigantic animal do what they want. 00:22:21.47\00:22:24.84 - Is it hard to find horses in Cambodia? 00:22:25.97\00:22:27.68 - Yes. 00:22:27.68\00:22:28.74 There is maybe I think they said 15,000, 00:22:28.74\00:22:32.51 but a lot of 'em are very small. 00:22:32.51\00:22:34.68 They're all stallions. 00:22:35.95\00:22:37.25 There's not any for sale that's over three years old 00:22:38.59\00:22:41.49 'cause they get worked quite hard 00:22:42.72\00:22:44.23 and they don't have a very long working life 00:22:44.23\00:22:47.13 with their Cambodian owners. 00:22:47.13\00:22:49.76 So we've had to go down to Kampong Cham, 00:22:49.76\00:22:52.50 which is over halfway to Phnom Penh, to find our horses. 00:22:52.50\00:22:56.50 - How long have you guys been, 00:22:56.50\00:22:58.34 has this project been going? 00:22:58.34\00:23:00.14 - Well, the idea was kind of born back in May 2014, 00:23:00.14\00:23:04.05 but we've only started with the kids 00:23:04.05\00:23:05.71 since September of this year. 00:23:05.71\00:23:07.22 - And we've had the horses 00:23:07.22\00:23:08.58 just over a year. - Last year. 00:23:08.58\00:23:09.75 September last year. 00:23:09.75\00:23:10.85 (laughs) 00:23:10.85\00:23:11.92 - Is it popular with the kids? 00:23:11.92\00:23:13.52 - They do enjoy riding the horses. 00:23:13.52\00:23:16.22 They'll come around sometimes just to pet them, 00:23:17.49\00:23:20.03 just to feed them food over the fence and things like that. 00:23:20.03\00:23:23.10 It was obviously much more of a novelty 00:23:23.10\00:23:25.03 when we got them at the first. 00:23:25.03\00:23:26.77 It's kind of worn off but we still have the faithfuls 00:23:26.77\00:23:28.70 that come around. 00:23:28.70\00:23:29.74 (laughs) 00:23:29.74\00:23:31.11 We have a group of trainees that come in the afternoon 00:23:31.11\00:23:33.34 to learn how to take care of the horses, ride the horses, 00:23:33.34\00:23:36.48 train the horses, with the hopes that they'll eventually 00:23:36.48\00:23:39.01 be able to be used as teachers for the program. 00:23:39.01\00:23:41.88 - Do you need any young volunteers to help? 00:23:41.88\00:23:44.39 - This place, the whole school, 00:23:44.39\00:23:45.92 can always use more volunteers. 00:23:45.92\00:23:47.92 And anyone who loves kids and isn't afraid of horses 00:23:47.92\00:23:51.33 is always welcome to give us a hand. 00:23:51.33\00:23:53.19 - Do you know anybody else who's doing ministry with horses 00:23:54.56\00:23:57.50 for missionary work? 00:23:57.50\00:23:59.40 - For missionary work, no. 00:23:59.40\00:24:00.67 There are a lot of horse therapy places, 00:24:01.74\00:24:05.51 but it don't know of any in this country 00:24:05.51\00:24:08.51 or in any other mission field. 00:24:08.51\00:24:11.55 - This is a really cool project and-- 00:24:11.55\00:24:14.18 - Thanks for coming. 00:24:15.18\00:24:15.98 (laughs) - Thank you. 00:24:15.98\00:24:17.25 (singing) 00:24:17.25\00:24:19.49 (acoustic guitar music) 00:24:28.20\00:24:31.87 - Our last evening there, Uncle Tim took us into town 00:24:31.87\00:24:35.14 to shop for traditional clothes and souvenirs. 00:24:35.14\00:24:37.77 We're gonna talk really loud so you can hear us. 00:24:41.04\00:24:42.78 We're at a night market here in Cambodia, 00:24:42.78\00:24:45.55 Siem Reap, actually, and we are ordering roti. 00:24:45.55\00:24:50.22 Really thin kinda like crepes. 00:24:50.22\00:24:52.45 - And you put bananas in it and you fold it over 00:24:52.45\00:24:55.16 and put chocolate on top and cut it up. 00:24:55.16\00:24:57.56 It's really good. 00:24:57.56\00:24:58.76 He rolls it though. 00:24:58.76\00:24:59.83 (girls chattering) 00:25:01.23\00:25:04.23 (soft instrumental music) 00:25:55.15\00:25:58.72 Then there's more. 00:26:03.16\00:26:04.73 (cameraman laughs) 00:26:52.07\00:26:55.08 - That was so much fun. 00:27:06.52\00:27:07.89 Lots of people would be really nervous to eat street food, 00:27:07.89\00:27:10.73 but in our opinion it's definitely the best. 00:27:10.73\00:27:13.03 - Yeah, for sure. 00:27:13.03\00:27:14.36 And Kathleen and Ely's project is so inspiring. 00:27:14.36\00:27:16.97 - Mmhmm, and they had to go through so many challenges 00:27:16.97\00:27:19.80 to get that project up and running. 00:27:19.80\00:27:21.94 They had to search the entire country to find a horse 00:27:21.94\00:27:24.44 that was gentle enough for the kids to ride, 00:27:24.44\00:27:26.41 and they had to raise all the money to build the enclosures 00:27:26.41\00:27:28.98 and buy the horses and food and everything. 00:27:28.98\00:27:31.48 - Wow. 00:27:31.48\00:27:33.11 We each have different talents and interests that we can use 00:27:33.11\00:27:36.18 for spreading the gospel. 00:27:36.18\00:27:37.55 God has a special place for each of us. 00:27:37.55\00:27:39.75 You just have to ask him where that is for you. 00:27:39.75\00:27:41.89 Following him is not always easy, 00:27:41.89\00:27:44.36 and it's important not to give up 00:27:44.36\00:27:45.83 and to keep going when things become difficult. 00:27:45.83\00:27:48.26 - We'll see you next time on Mission Trek. 00:27:48.26\00:27:50.00 - And remember to pray for the unreached. 00:27:50.00\00:27:52.10 (instrumental music) 00:27:52.10\00:27:55.24
