(inspirational music) 00:00:00.60\00:00:03.57 - [Mary Ann] We've grown up in the Church, 00:00:05.57\00:00:06.84 and have always been somewhat involved in outreach. 00:00:06.84\00:00:09.54 But how can we get involved in missions overseas? 00:00:09.54\00:00:13.01 My name is Mary Ann. 00:00:13.01\00:00:14.61 - [Lilyann] And I'm Lilyann. 00:00:14.61\00:00:16.44 We wanted to find out. 00:00:16.44\00:00:18.65 Join us on your journey. 00:00:18.65\00:00:20.72 (gong sound effect) 00:00:20.72\00:00:21.95 To discover the culture. 00:00:21.95\00:00:24.05 The lifestyle. 00:00:24.05\00:00:25.32 - [Mary Ann] The need, and the mission. 00:00:25.32\00:00:27.66 - [Lilyann] In two of southeast Asia's 00:00:27.66\00:00:29.29 least reached countries. 00:00:29.29\00:00:30.79 - [Mary Ann] Welcome to MissionTREK. 00:00:31.86\00:00:33.96 - Hey, welcome back to MissionTREK. 00:00:38.77\00:00:40.94 - In the last episode, we traveled 00:00:40.94\00:00:42.64 from Chiang Mai to the Sharon's by motorbike. 00:00:42.64\00:00:45.44 Then, we went to a refugee camp, 00:00:45.44\00:00:47.24 where we saw some of the amazing ways 00:00:47.24\00:00:49.08 that God is working there. 00:00:49.08\00:00:50.38 - Today, we will be meeting some more 00:00:50.38\00:00:52.25 real life missionaries. 00:00:52.25\00:00:53.75 - So we traveled from the Sharon's to a school 00:00:53.75\00:00:58.22 on the border of Myanmar, which used to be Burma. 00:00:58.22\00:01:01.12 And since we had our whole team and the Sharons family, 00:01:01.12\00:01:04.46 we had to borrow a truck, 00:01:04.46\00:01:05.53 and we all piled into that one truck 00:01:05.53\00:01:07.83 with all our luggage. 00:01:07.83\00:01:09.20 - It was pretty tight. 00:01:09.20\00:01:10.10 - It was really tight. 00:01:10.10\00:01:11.77 So here's a video of how we traveled. 00:01:11.77\00:01:14.90 (upbeat acoustic music) 00:01:16.54\00:01:19.94 - [Lilyann] Yeah, it's a busy day. 00:01:27.65\00:01:28.85 We went to the refugee camp, 00:01:28.85\00:01:30.89 and then we came back and packed up. 00:01:30.89\00:01:32.32 And as you can see, 00:01:32.32\00:01:33.42 the truck is very, very packed full of people. 00:01:33.42\00:01:37.06 There's seven of us in the back. 00:01:37.06\00:01:38.73 With all the luggage. 00:01:39.73\00:01:41.43 - [Mary Ann] And then four people 00:01:41.43\00:01:42.56 are on two separate motorbikes. 00:01:42.56\00:01:44.63 - Hi. 00:01:44.63\00:01:46.20 - [Mary Ann] And then some people are up front, too. 00:01:46.20\00:01:48.27 It's gonna be fun. 00:01:50.91\00:01:52.54 - We're really tired. 00:01:54.91\00:01:55.94 (Mary Ann coughing) 00:01:57.38\00:01:58.61 - And we're sick. 00:01:58.61\00:02:00.22 Or I am. 00:02:00.22\00:02:01.32 - We're a little sick, little sick. 00:02:01.32\00:02:03.28 - Anyways. 00:02:04.75\00:02:05.55 But it's been pretty fun. 00:02:05.55\00:02:07.42 - We're just heading to Sunshine Orchard. 00:02:07.42\00:02:09.19 Probably will get there late. 00:02:09.19\00:02:11.69 - So we traveled like that in the truck 00:02:12.76\00:02:14.46 for about three hours. 00:02:14.46\00:02:16.13 And it was fun, even though it was squished. 00:02:16.13\00:02:19.00 Bur after dark, it got really cold. 00:02:19.00\00:02:22.27 - It did. 00:02:22.27\00:02:23.57 But it's normal for people to travel like that, 00:02:23.57\00:02:25.74 all piled into one vehicle. 00:02:25.74\00:02:27.48 Never see that here in America. 00:02:27.48\00:02:29.54 - Nope. 00:02:29.54\00:02:30.35 So we traveled from the Sharon's 00:02:30.35\00:02:31.95 to Sunshine Orchard, which is a school 00:02:31.95\00:02:34.22 on the border of Burma, that works with the Karen people. 00:02:34.22\00:02:38.12 - So now, we wanna talk a little bit 00:02:38.12\00:02:40.56 about the Karen people's history, and their background. 00:02:40.56\00:02:43.73 Before World War II, they were a minority in Burma, 00:02:43.73\00:02:47.86 and the Burmese hated them. 00:02:47.86\00:02:51.13 - But the Karen were the ones 00:02:51.13\00:02:52.37 who were most open to the gospel, 00:02:52.37\00:02:54.00 and many of them became Christians. 00:02:54.00\00:02:55.60 If you're familiar with Eric B. Hare, 00:02:55.60\00:02:58.11 he was a missionary with that same people group, 00:02:58.11\00:03:00.08 almost a hundred years ago. 00:03:00.08\00:03:01.44 And he wrote a lot of books telling 00:03:01.44\00:03:03.08 about his amazing adventures over there. 00:03:03.08\00:03:04.95 - They are really interesting to read, 00:03:04.95\00:03:06.65 like once you start, it's really hard to put them down. 00:03:06.65\00:03:09.58 So during World War II, the Karen helped the British 00:03:09.58\00:03:13.25 push the Japanese out, with the understanding 00:03:13.25\00:03:15.96 that they would then get their own state. 00:03:15.96\00:03:19.03 - But even though they worked really hard 00:03:20.10\00:03:21.56 to help the British push out the Japanese, 00:03:21.56\00:03:23.47 once the war was over, the British gave full power 00:03:23.47\00:03:26.33 to the Burmese, and left, 00:03:26.33\00:03:28.14 while the Burmese continue to treat the Karen horribly. 00:03:28.14\00:03:30.91 - And many Karen people were killed. 00:03:30.91\00:03:33.44 And a civil war was started 00:03:33.44\00:03:35.24 that has been going on ever since, 00:03:35.24\00:03:37.55 and it is the longest civil war 00:03:37.55\00:03:39.55 in the history of the world. 00:03:39.55\00:03:41.52 - And even today, there's still fighting 00:03:41.52\00:03:43.25 from time to time, and many of the Karen 00:03:43.25\00:03:45.35 have fled into Thailand and other countries, 00:03:45.35\00:03:47.86 and some even into the refugee camps, 00:03:47.86\00:03:50.36 like the one that we visited. 00:03:50.36\00:03:52.33 Others who had migrated before 00:03:52.33\00:03:53.96 are now living in the jungles, 00:03:53.96\00:03:55.66 and today we can go meet some of them 00:03:55.66\00:03:57.27 and sit in their houses. 00:03:57.27\00:03:58.63 - But getting back to the show right now, 00:03:58.63\00:04:00.60 our first adventure's with a dentist, 00:04:00.60\00:04:03.07 who is going out not only to do dental work, 00:04:03.07\00:04:05.97 but to train other young people in basic dentistry. 00:04:05.97\00:04:09.01 - Warning, there are needles and blood, 00:04:09.01\00:04:11.65 so you many want to look away during part of this video. 00:04:11.65\00:04:14.52 (peaceful music) 00:04:15.52\00:04:18.35 - So, we're here at Sunshine Orchards, 00:04:22.66\00:04:24.66 and we came here from the Sharon's house. 00:04:24.66\00:04:27.66 This morning, we're going with a group that's here. 00:04:27.66\00:04:31.00 We're going to a village, and we're gonna be doing 00:04:31.00\00:04:34.50 teeth extractions, well, I'm not, 00:04:34.50\00:04:36.44 but the doctor, Dr. Hamilton, and other people 00:04:36.44\00:04:40.88 are gonna be doing teeth extractions for the villagers, 00:04:40.88\00:04:43.21 so we're gonna see what that's like. 00:04:43.21\00:04:46.55 And Mary Ann's not able to come with us 00:04:46.55\00:04:48.72 because she is sick. 00:04:48.72\00:04:50.95 She got sick, I think, from dust 00:04:50.95\00:04:53.72 when we were doing lots of motorbiking. 00:04:53.72\00:04:56.76 And not enough rest, also. 00:04:59.79\00:05:01.33 So she's gonna stay home today, 00:05:01.33\00:05:03.53 hopefully she can get feeling a lot better 00:05:03.53\00:05:06.00 so she can join us tomorrow. 00:05:06.00\00:05:08.90 (gentle acoustic music) 00:05:10.04\00:05:13.44 When we visited Sunshine Orchard, 00:05:18.78\00:05:20.82 there was a special medical missionary 00:05:20.82\00:05:22.42 training course for the high school graduates. 00:05:22.42\00:05:24.85 Dr. Jack and his wife Katie came to teach 00:05:24.85\00:05:27.32 those students how to pull teeth. 00:05:27.32\00:05:29.02 Most of the villagers chew betel nut, 00:05:30.19\00:05:32.26 which is similar to tobacco. 00:05:32.26\00:05:33.86 So their teeth are really bad. 00:05:33.86\00:05:35.40 So we're at the village now. 00:05:37.17\00:05:39.33 It was like, not very far drive. 00:05:39.33\00:05:41.84 Maybe 15 minutes. 00:05:41.84\00:05:43.17 We're here now, and they're trying to set up a spot 00:05:43.17\00:05:46.21 to do the extractions, and getting 00:05:46.21\00:05:49.14 all the stuff out, and everything. 00:05:49.14\00:05:51.18 So far the buildings that I've been in, 00:05:58.45\00:06:01.12 which this is the only one, but. 00:06:01.12\00:06:02.96 It's not bamboo, they're just like wood slats, 00:06:02.96\00:06:05.16 so there's all these holes in the wall, 00:06:05.16\00:06:06.66 so that's kind of interesting. 00:06:06.66\00:06:09.03 But this is the school building that they have 00:06:09.03\00:06:11.07 in this village. 00:06:11.07\00:06:12.50 And the huts are made out of bamboo. 00:06:12.50\00:06:14.80 Some people right now are going around, 00:06:14.80\00:06:16.81 some of the people that work in the village, 00:06:16.81\00:06:19.07 and telling people that we're here, 00:06:19.07\00:06:22.11 and that they're ready to do the extractions, I guess, 00:06:22.11\00:06:24.85 just so people can come. 00:06:24.85\00:06:26.65 Just have to wait for people to come now. 00:06:26.65\00:06:28.75 (gentle acoustic music) 00:06:29.68\00:06:33.09 One of the most powerful ways to reach the hearts 00:06:35.82\00:06:38.33 of these people is to meet their needs. 00:06:38.33\00:06:40.76 In remote villages far from a dentist, 00:06:40.76\00:06:43.06 pulling teeth brings great relief to those in pain. 00:06:43.06\00:06:46.57 (gentle acoustic music) 00:06:46.57\00:06:49.97 So how did you guys meet? 00:06:55.31\00:06:57.31 - I'll let you tell that one. 00:06:57.31\00:06:58.41 - Okay. 00:06:58.41\00:06:59.55 We were both going to a local community college. 00:06:59.55\00:07:04.25 And we met in a Spanish class, 00:07:04.25\00:07:07.52 because we wanted to be able to go and do mission work. 00:07:07.52\00:07:12.16 And I had been going to Mexico with my family 00:07:12.16\00:07:14.13 on short term mission trips, 00:07:14.13\00:07:15.80 and it just so happened that we were partners in class. 00:07:15.80\00:07:19.63 And we found out that we were both Adventists. 00:07:19.63\00:07:22.47 And became good friends. 00:07:23.97\00:07:26.04 - So why are you guys here? 00:07:26.04\00:07:27.84 - We're here to teach some of the kids 00:07:27.84\00:07:29.78 how to pull teeth, how to clean teeth, 00:07:29.78\00:07:34.28 so that they can go out into the villages 00:07:34.28\00:07:36.75 and use that as a witnessing tool. 00:07:36.75\00:07:40.66 - So would you recommend mission work for young people? 00:07:40.66\00:07:43.66 - Absolutely. 00:07:43.66\00:07:44.49 Absolutely. 00:07:44.49\00:07:45.93 - It's life-changing. 00:07:47.20\00:07:48.93 It helps change your perspective. 00:07:48.93\00:07:51.30 And it makes your Christian walk come to life. 00:07:51.30\00:07:56.27 It's very real. 00:07:57.91\00:07:59.44 - [Jack] When I was 15, I went on a mission trip 00:07:59.44\00:08:02.24 to Dominican Republic and pulled teeth, 00:08:02.24\00:08:06.45 kinda got the bug. 00:08:06.45\00:08:08.52 And decided that's what I wanted to do. 00:08:08.52\00:08:11.02 So I became a dentist. 00:08:11.02\00:08:12.59 - [Lilyann] That's awesome. 00:08:12.59\00:08:13.96 Is there a need for young people in the mission field? 00:08:13.96\00:08:16.49 - Yes. 00:08:16.49\00:08:17.79 - Very much so. 00:08:17.79\00:08:19.06 They learn much more quickly, 00:08:19.06\00:08:21.13 they can learn the language more quickly, 00:08:21.13\00:08:25.23 but even more than that, if you're talking about dentistry, 00:08:25.23\00:08:28.07 they pick up much more quickly. 00:08:28.07\00:08:30.94 The skills that they need to be able to work. 00:08:30.94\00:08:34.78 - [Katie] And it seems that people, 00:08:34.78\00:08:37.25 the local people, are more receptive to young people. 00:08:37.25\00:08:41.05 And there aren't as many barriers to take down. 00:08:41.05\00:08:43.62 They'll open up their home more 00:08:45.09\00:08:46.55 to a young person than they would 00:08:46.55\00:08:49.09 to someone who they feel may be more judgemental, 00:08:49.09\00:08:53.56 or may not understand. 00:08:53.56\00:08:55.46 Young people can get away with more things. 00:08:55.46\00:08:57.67 - So if you're a young person watching, 00:08:58.70\00:09:00.54 and you don't exactly know what you wanna be in life, 00:09:00.54\00:09:03.87 maybe go on a mission trip, and pray about it, 00:09:03.87\00:09:05.94 and see what God has in store for you. 00:09:05.94\00:09:09.64 - If you want the greatest adventure in your lifetime. 00:09:09.64\00:09:12.41 It will also be the scariest. 00:09:14.28\00:09:16.48 It will test every part of you. 00:09:16.48\00:09:18.59 But if you hang on to Jesus and go on a short term 00:09:19.89\00:09:21.36 mission trip, he'll help you through, 00:09:21.36\00:09:24.39 and it will be an amazing adventure. 00:09:24.39\00:09:27.96 (soft piano music) 00:09:28.73\00:09:31.73 - Wasn't that amazing? 00:09:50.55\00:09:52.35 It was such a privilege to get to watch 00:09:52.35\00:09:54.32 Dr. Jack and his wife Katie as they help these people. 00:09:54.32\00:09:57.33 They go on trips like this every year. 00:09:57.33\00:09:59.46 - It seems like they get so much joy out of it, as well. 00:09:59.46\00:10:02.53 - But since you were sick, 00:10:02.53\00:10:03.93 you didn't get to go on that trip. 00:10:03.93\00:10:05.57 But at least you got to miss 00:10:05.57\00:10:07.44 the needles and the blood part of it. 00:10:07.44\00:10:09.34 - Yeah, so I had to take a couple day's rest 00:10:09.34\00:10:11.61 until I got well again. 00:10:11.61\00:10:12.94 - But I miss having you with me while we're shooting. 00:10:12.94\00:10:15.64 Ugh, I had to be by myself. 00:10:15.64\00:10:17.25 (both laughing) 00:10:17.25\00:10:18.61 Now, we want to introduce you to some missionaries 00:10:18.61\00:10:21.58 who are living and working on the border 00:10:21.58\00:10:23.55 of Thailand and Burma. 00:10:23.55\00:10:25.35 We got to go with them 00:10:26.19\00:10:27.56 as they went to visit a local village. 00:10:27.56\00:10:30.03 (children singing in native language) 00:10:31.23\00:10:35.76 I'm here at Sunshine Orchard, 00:10:43.04\00:10:44.84 and I wanted to ask Mr. And Mrs. Steck some questions 00:10:44.84\00:10:48.14 about what life is like for them here. 00:10:48.14\00:10:50.38 So what do you guys do here? 00:10:50.38\00:10:52.15 - Well, I'm the school principal. 00:10:52.15\00:10:53.72 And I also get to do a lot of other things, 00:10:53.72\00:10:56.79 going to town and buying supplies for the students, 00:10:56.79\00:10:59.32 and helping fix different things. 00:10:59.32\00:11:02.36 I get a variety of work here. 00:11:02.36\00:11:03.89 - [Mrs. Steck] I'm the school nurse, 00:11:03.89\00:11:05.83 and so I have a lot of fun with that, 00:11:05.83\00:11:07.86 and also teach natural remedies, health, 00:11:07.86\00:11:12.93 and how to treat diseases with natural remedies, 00:11:14.27\00:11:16.74 and things like that. 00:11:16.74\00:11:19.34 - How big is the school? 00:11:19.34\00:11:21.14 - [Mr. Steck] We have about 200 students. 00:11:21.14\00:11:23.14 Kindergarten up through grade 10. 00:11:23.14\00:11:25.31 - [Lilyann] Oh wow, that's a lot. 00:11:25.31\00:11:27.35 What is the goal of the school, the long-term goal? 00:11:27.35\00:11:30.85 - [Mr. Steck] There are a lot of different schools 00:11:30.85\00:11:32.19 up and down the border here, 00:11:32.19\00:11:33.56 because there is a great lack of education in Karen state. 00:11:33.56\00:11:36.42 But our purpose is especially to train young people 00:11:36.42\00:11:40.33 how to be missionaries. 00:11:40.33\00:11:42.13 That includes giving them practical skills 00:11:42.13\00:11:44.03 in different vocational areas 00:11:44.03\00:11:45.30 so that they can support themselves 00:11:45.30\00:11:47.04 in whatever God is calling them to do. 00:11:47.04\00:11:49.17 - What are some of the needs here at this school? 00:11:49.17\00:11:51.67 - There are a lot of different needs 00:11:51.67\00:11:53.98 for people to help here, 00:11:53.98\00:11:55.68 because it's a whole lifestyle here, 00:11:55.68\00:11:58.88 there's some people that can come and help teach 00:11:58.88\00:12:01.52 English or other subjects, 00:12:01.52\00:12:04.25 there's opportunities for people to help 00:12:04.25\00:12:07.06 the Karen children learn how to grow gardens better, 00:12:07.06\00:12:10.86 there's opportunities to help some of the missionaries 00:12:10.86\00:12:15.63 in their own responsibilities if they're overloaded. 00:12:15.63\00:12:19.00 There's a lot of different things 00:12:19.00\00:12:20.50 that people can do, young or old. 00:12:20.50\00:12:22.57 - So the main need that I hear you say 00:12:22.57\00:12:24.34 is people, you need people. 00:12:24.34\00:12:25.97 That are willing to do different things. 00:12:25.97\00:12:28.24 - [Mr. Steck] That's right. 00:12:28.24\00:12:29.61 Sometimes it's a lot easier to get money than people. 00:12:29.61\00:12:31.51 (all laughing) 00:12:31.51\00:12:32.71 We really need dedicated people 00:12:32.71\00:12:35.05 that want to work for the Lord 00:12:35.05\00:12:36.79 in whatever area that God calls them to. 00:12:36.79\00:12:39.59 - So what would you suggest that I do 00:12:39.59\00:12:41.99 if I was interested in coming here to volunteer? 00:12:41.99\00:12:44.73 Some of the things I could do to prepare. 00:12:44.73\00:12:46.93 - [Mrs. Steck] One of the things that young people 00:12:46.93\00:12:48.50 can do to prepare is go and take a CPR course, 00:12:48.50\00:12:52.20 First Aid course, maybe TEFL course. 00:12:52.20\00:12:55.24 And if they know how to play an instrument, 00:12:55.24\00:12:59.47 they can teach the students how to play instruments. 00:12:59.47\00:13:02.51 - [Mr. Steck] It really helps to have an attitude 00:13:02.51\00:13:05.61 that you are willing to do whatever the needs are at hand, 00:13:05.61\00:13:09.75 and that you realize that that is pleasing to God, 00:13:09.75\00:13:12.19 and it's a great blessing to the school 00:13:12.19\00:13:14.29 and everybody around you, if you're willing to just 00:13:14.29\00:13:16.39 get in and do what needs to be done. 00:13:16.39\00:13:18.73 Having a willing heart and a humble heart 00:13:18.73\00:13:20.60 willing to do anything can go a long way 00:13:20.60\00:13:24.23 to making the work a success. 00:13:24.23\00:13:26.84 And that starts in the family. 00:13:26.84\00:13:28.47 Helping your parents, doing whatever 00:13:28.47\00:13:31.84 can be a help around the home, 00:13:31.84\00:13:33.84 is a great way of preparing to work in the mission field. 00:13:33.84\00:13:36.85 - You definitely need a heart of service 00:13:36.85\00:13:38.28 if you wanna be a missionary. 00:13:38.28\00:13:39.85 'Cause Jesus came and served people. 00:13:39.85\00:13:42.15 Could you share with me your vision for young people 00:13:42.15\00:13:45.79 in God's work? 00:13:45.79\00:13:47.12 - [Mr. Steck] We are working with young people here, 00:13:47.12\00:13:49.46 and when young people see other young people 00:13:49.46\00:13:51.53 that are dedicated to God, it's an inspiration to them. 00:13:51.53\00:13:55.33 That they don't need to wait until they're older 00:13:55.33\00:13:57.47 to work for the Lord, and so there is a great calling 00:13:57.47\00:14:01.34 for young people, and it's a good way to start out 00:14:01.34\00:14:03.67 your life in serving the Lord. 00:14:03.67\00:14:05.24 - You're always an example, no matter who you're around, 00:14:06.64\00:14:09.98 in a positive way. 00:14:09.98\00:14:11.58 - Amen. 00:14:11.58\00:14:12.48 - [Lilyann] We've been visiting a lot of missionaries 00:14:15.15\00:14:16.69 and seeing how they do everyday life, 00:14:16.69\00:14:19.62 and they seem really happy, really content, 00:14:19.62\00:14:24.69 of course, they have struggles and I assume 00:14:25.79\00:14:30.67 that when they first came over here, it was harder, 00:14:33.20\00:14:36.10 because they probably missed home, 00:14:37.44\00:14:38.87 but it's a little sacrifice. 00:14:38.87\00:14:42.38 They seem really happy, and it's exciting 00:14:44.55\00:14:48.65 to just see what they do and the difference 00:14:48.65\00:14:50.45 that they're making in the world around them. 00:14:50.45\00:14:52.79 I've enjoyed having the privilege 00:14:53.82\00:14:55.56 of meeting them and seeing them. 00:14:55.56\00:14:58.59 I wanted to ask the Drehers some questions 00:15:06.94\00:15:08.74 to find out what life is like for them here. 00:15:08.74\00:15:11.44 So why did you guys decide to come here? 00:15:11.44\00:15:13.88 - We came here because we were at a faith camp, 00:15:14.98\00:15:19.28 and I think every young person should go to a faith camp, 00:15:19.28\00:15:23.35 and let God speak to their hearts about their future. 00:15:23.35\00:15:27.52 And God spoke to our hearts, each separately, 00:15:27.52\00:15:31.06 and we turned to each other during faith camp, 00:15:31.06\00:15:33.36 and said, God wants me to go to the mission field. 00:15:33.36\00:15:37.47 And my wife said the same thing. 00:15:37.47\00:15:40.07 And so we did planning, and we did some searching, 00:15:40.07\00:15:43.07 and we ended up coming here to Thailand, 00:15:43.07\00:15:45.77 and we were gonna work with Thai people, 00:15:45.77\00:15:48.91 and we ended up working with Karen people, 00:15:48.91\00:15:52.28 but we let God lead us and we need to be always open 00:15:52.28\00:15:56.82 to let God lead us, and young people 00:15:56.82\00:15:59.92 can be very good at letting God lead them. 00:15:59.92\00:16:03.63 - How is life here different from life in America? 00:16:03.63\00:16:06.66 - Well, this is the jungle. 00:16:06.66\00:16:08.40 And it rains for four to five months, 00:16:08.40\00:16:10.63 sometimes every day, every day, every day, all day, all day. 00:16:10.63\00:16:15.70 The culture is different. 00:16:16.50\00:16:17.74 The people are different. 00:16:17.74\00:16:19.01 They're very nice, and they're friendly, 00:16:19.01\00:16:22.48 and we don't have to be afraid of them, 00:16:22.48\00:16:24.38 sometimes young people are afraid of the mission field, 00:16:24.38\00:16:26.72 no, we don't have to be afraid at all. 00:16:26.72\00:16:29.28 Because the people here are very nice. 00:16:29.28\00:16:31.75 - Plus God is always with you, wherever you go. 00:16:31.75\00:16:33.25 - And that's right. 00:16:33.25\00:16:34.79 - What do you each do here at the school? 00:16:34.79\00:16:36.99 - We are teaching the course 00:16:36.99\00:16:38.83 after the high school graduates, 00:16:38.83\00:16:41.33 and it's called the Medical and Bible Outreach 00:16:41.33\00:16:43.67 training course. 00:16:43.67\00:16:45.00 - [Mr. Dreher] We teach them how to do health work, 00:16:45.00\00:16:48.44 how to do simple hydrotherapy, 00:16:48.44\00:16:51.14 or how to give health talks, 00:16:51.14\00:16:54.51 and teach them Bible talks, 00:16:54.51\00:16:58.51 and these students want to help their people, 00:16:58.51\00:17:01.12 and so we have the wonderful opportunity 00:17:01.12\00:17:03.75 of training young people how to work in God's world 00:17:03.75\00:17:08.82 and how to share the gospel, 00:17:09.62\00:17:11.46 and how to share the love of Jesus with others. 00:17:11.46\00:17:13.83 I go up into the villages with my students 00:17:13.83\00:17:17.33 every Thursday and Sabbath, and Sabbath afternoon 00:17:17.33\00:17:20.97 we do a branch Sabbath School, 00:17:20.97\00:17:22.34 and sometimes we have 10 to 15 students, sometimes 20. 00:17:22.34\00:17:26.31 Children that come, and we sing songs 00:17:26.31\00:17:29.04 that are simple, and we give them health talks, 00:17:29.04\00:17:33.01 and we tell them Bible stories. 00:17:33.01\00:17:35.35 And the children love it. 00:17:35.35\00:17:37.65 And so young people can get involved in this 00:17:37.65\00:17:40.09 and do this kind of thing. 00:17:40.09\00:17:41.66 - We're here at a village this afternoon. 00:17:46.80\00:17:49.20 We're doing a branch Sabbath School thing. 00:17:49.20\00:17:52.67 We're in Mae Salit. 00:17:52.67\00:17:54.57 And, yeah, not sure exactly what we're gonna do. 00:17:54.57\00:17:59.14 (gentle acoustic music) 00:17:59.14\00:18:02.51 We're gonna go visiting through the village. 00:18:07.35\00:18:09.68 We're gonna go to people's houses. 00:18:10.79\00:18:11.95 (gentle acoustic music) 00:18:14.16\00:18:17.56 You know these babies have no diapers on? 00:18:36.95\00:18:39.18 - [Woman] Yes. 00:18:39.18\00:18:40.45 (both laughing) 00:18:40.45\00:18:42.45 (chattering in native language) 00:18:42.45\00:18:46.52 - [Lilyann] It feels like you stepped right into 00:18:47.96\00:18:50.46 a mission book, a story out of a mission book, kind of, 00:18:50.46\00:18:53.40 'cause like, there's all the pigs, and animals 00:18:53.40\00:18:56.30 underneath the house, 00:18:56.30\00:18:57.70 and you climb up a little ladder, 00:18:57.70\00:19:00.17 and you're in the little hut thing, house. 00:19:00.17\00:19:03.71 Yeah. 00:19:06.14\00:19:07.01 It's quite an experience. 00:19:07.94\00:19:10.55 But it's good. 00:19:10.55\00:19:11.78 (talking in native language) 00:19:12.91\00:19:16.75 (gentle acoustic music) 00:19:21.06\00:19:24.46 It's just huge culture shock. 00:19:34.77\00:19:37.34 I don't know. 00:19:39.27\00:19:40.44 It's just like, wow! 00:19:41.38\00:19:43.11 Kind of. 00:19:44.68\00:19:45.58 You read about stuff like this, 00:19:46.48\00:19:47.62 but to actually be here is just like, 00:19:47.62\00:19:49.68 you get all the smells and everything. 00:19:50.85\00:19:53.05 (children singing in native language) 00:19:58.66\00:20:03.20 What? 00:20:24.85\00:20:26.19 - [Man] Do you know what they're singing? 00:20:26.19\00:20:27.79 - Mm-mm. 00:20:27.79\00:20:28.89 But, it seems to be nice, a nice song. 00:20:28.89\00:20:31.93 I don't recognize the tune, 00:20:35.46\00:20:38.03 so I'm not sure what they're singing at all. 00:20:38.03\00:20:40.60 (teaching in native language) 00:20:44.54\00:20:48.34 - I was 16 when our family first moved here. 00:21:04.86\00:21:07.23 - And I was 19. 00:21:08.10\00:21:09.73 - So what do you guys do here now? 00:21:09.73\00:21:11.53 - The main thing is teaching English, 00:21:11.53\00:21:15.10 and another class or two. 00:21:15.10\00:21:17.07 But there's many other things that you get to do. 00:21:17.07\00:21:19.81 I'm actually helping with the accounting for the school, 00:21:19.81\00:21:23.31 and helping with translating, 00:21:23.31\00:21:26.38 and sometimes with medical things, 00:21:26.38\00:21:28.15 but it just varies from day to day. 00:21:28.15\00:21:29.98 - I've been teaching mostly fifth and sixth graders, 00:21:31.32\00:21:34.32 which are like, 12 to 16 year olds, some 18 year olds also. 00:21:34.32\00:21:39.39 I also teach the typing class. 00:21:40.20\00:21:42.16 There's other various things to do throughout the weeks. 00:21:42.16\00:21:47.14 - [Lilyann] Would you recommend being a missionary 00:21:48.54\00:21:49.67 to other young people? 00:21:49.67\00:21:51.47 - I would, I definitely would. 00:21:51.47\00:21:53.78 I know before I came here, I had ideas 00:21:53.78\00:21:56.38 of what I was gonna do with my life, 00:21:56.38\00:21:58.95 and going to college and what I was gonna learn, 00:21:58.95\00:22:00.45 and everything. 00:22:00.45\00:22:01.75 But at that point I don't think I really knew, 00:22:01.75\00:22:04.05 even what my own interests were, 00:22:04.05\00:22:05.99 I didn't really have experience out there doing anything, 00:22:05.99\00:22:08.66 and after being in a place like this, 00:22:08.66\00:22:10.66 you kind of get a really different perspective 00:22:10.66\00:22:12.86 on what really matters in life, 00:22:12.86\00:22:14.83 and really what you should be doing with your life 00:22:14.83\00:22:17.80 can totally change in a place like this, 00:22:17.80\00:22:21.57 not when you just come for two weeks or something, 00:22:21.57\00:22:23.41 but when you come and you spend time, 00:22:23.41\00:22:26.21 and you get to understand people better, 00:22:26.21\00:22:29.21 and you get to understand better what God 00:22:29.21\00:22:30.88 is calling you to do, 00:22:30.88\00:22:32.08 it's a really god experience for anybody. 00:22:32.08\00:22:34.18 And it can teach you a lot of lessons 00:22:34.18\00:22:35.75 of learning to not just follow your own desires 00:22:35.75\00:22:39.42 and do things your own way, 00:22:39.42\00:22:40.49 because you have to work with other people, 00:22:40.49\00:22:42.42 you have to learn how to get along with people, 00:22:42.42\00:22:44.06 and not just that, a lot of times you get asked to do things 00:22:44.06\00:22:46.83 when you're busy, when you're tired, 00:22:46.83\00:22:48.70 and it's a really character-building experience. 00:22:48.70\00:22:52.53 - [Sharon] I was pretty sure I never, 00:22:52.53\00:22:53.97 ever wanted to be a teacher, that was not for me. 00:22:53.97\00:22:56.40 But God had something different in mind for me. 00:22:56.40\00:22:58.94 And that's what he does sometimes, 00:22:58.94\00:23:00.41 he takes people in the mission field, 00:23:00.41\00:23:02.34 he reveals to them that he has a different plan 00:23:02.34\00:23:07.32 for them than what they thought. 00:23:07.32\00:23:08.88 And he led me to do just exactly 00:23:08.88\00:23:12.35 what I thought I was never gonna do, 00:23:12.35\00:23:14.82 what I was sure that, yeah. 00:23:14.82\00:23:17.86 I just could not do. 00:23:17.86\00:23:18.96 And that was being a teacher. 00:23:18.96\00:23:20.96 And that experience grew my faith stronger than ever before. 00:23:20.96\00:23:26.03 If you want a faith-building experience, 00:23:27.24\00:23:28.50 definitely go to the mission field. 00:23:28.50\00:23:31.47 I hated the experience of being a teacher at first, 00:23:31.47\00:23:34.08 but I'm so thankful that God changed my plans, 00:23:34.08\00:23:37.41 that I allowed him to change my plans. 00:23:37.41\00:23:40.35 - That's great, that's so inspiring. 00:23:41.82\00:23:44.12 Do you ever wanna live in America again? 00:23:45.19\00:23:47.42 - No. 00:23:48.52\00:23:49.36 (both laughing) 00:23:49.36\00:23:50.73 I have no desire whatsoever to go back to live there. 00:23:50.73\00:23:55.50 When I first came here, I thought, 00:23:56.70\00:23:58.87 well, maybe I'll be here for a little bit, 00:23:58.87\00:24:01.54 I don't know if I really wanna stay 00:24:01.54\00:24:02.57 in the foreign mission field, 00:24:02.57\00:24:03.97 but then after being here, was it, for only a month, 00:24:03.97\00:24:06.94 I decided, no, I wanna be here, either here 00:24:06.94\00:24:10.95 or somewhere in the mission field, for the rest of my life. 00:24:10.95\00:24:14.32 I really don't desire to go back to a land 00:24:14.32\00:24:18.25 that already has so much knowledge. 00:24:18.25\00:24:20.09 - I guess in some ways you could say, 00:24:21.66\00:24:24.03 the most important thing is wherever God calls. 00:24:24.03\00:24:26.06 But I'll have to say, I really don't have a desire 00:24:26.06\00:24:28.23 to go back to America, 00:24:28.23\00:24:29.43 'cause life is a lot different, 00:24:29.43\00:24:32.30 people are a lot more satisfied with what they have. 00:24:32.30\00:24:35.20 You can meet that here, too. 00:24:35.20\00:24:37.44 But when there's so much opportunity for them to know, 00:24:37.44\00:24:41.71 and there are so many people there 00:24:41.71\00:24:43.98 who could be doing the work to tell them about God, 00:24:43.98\00:24:47.35 it's like there's so much more that needs to be done here, 00:24:47.35\00:24:50.59 and there's so much of a need, 00:24:50.59\00:24:52.22 and even just the lifestyle, 00:24:52.22\00:24:53.56 you get used to the lifestyle here, 00:24:53.56\00:24:55.09 and the different culture, and everything, 00:24:55.09\00:24:57.86 but I definitely prefer living here. 00:24:57.86\00:25:00.96 - [Sharon] Yeah, there's so many people in America 00:25:00.96\00:25:02.70 that can tell others about God, they can witness, 00:25:02.70\00:25:06.53 but there are very few people, not many people at all, 00:25:06.53\00:25:08.77 that go overseas and dedicate themselves 00:25:08.77\00:25:11.91 for a long period of time to share the light with others. 00:25:11.91\00:25:16.41 - Yeah, I know if I ever moved here, 00:25:16.41\00:25:17.98 I think I would really, really miss home, a lot. 00:25:17.98\00:25:20.98 But, I know I could probably work through that 00:25:20.98\00:25:23.99 if God helped me. 00:25:23.99\00:25:25.32 - It can be hard, I think the thing I've missed 00:25:25.32\00:25:28.26 the most is probably people. 00:25:28.26\00:25:29.86 Like, friends. 00:25:29.86\00:25:31.36 And sometimes, there's like, oh, I miss 00:25:31.36\00:25:33.36 where I used to live and things, 00:25:33.36\00:25:35.30 but really, in most cases, the lifestyle, 00:25:35.30\00:25:38.60 a lot of things I don't miss. 00:25:38.60\00:25:41.27 But there's always the things like family and friends, 00:25:41.27\00:25:43.54 you wish you were closer to. 00:25:43.54\00:25:45.84 - The first one or two years that we were here, 00:25:45.84\00:25:48.41 sometimes I would just break down and cry 00:25:48.41\00:25:50.55 for a long time, 'cause I was homesick, 00:25:50.55\00:25:52.91 I'd think about my close friends back at home, 00:25:52.91\00:25:56.25 and I wanted to see them so badly, 00:25:56.25\00:25:58.15 I wished I could just fly and go home right then and there. 00:25:58.15\00:26:01.42 And then maybe come back, 00:26:01.42\00:26:03.66 but I wasn't sure if I really wanted to. 00:26:03.66\00:26:05.93 But the longer I stay here, the easier it's been to be away. 00:26:05.93\00:26:10.97 I still miss them a lot, 00:26:11.63\00:26:13.13 but the more I'm here the stronger my passion is 00:26:13.13\00:26:18.01 for the people here, and I'm willing to make that sacrifice. 00:26:18.01\00:26:23.08 - Well, thank you so much for sharing, 00:26:24.41\00:26:25.78 this has been really inspiring for me, 00:26:25.78\00:26:27.25 and I hope those watching, 00:26:27.25\00:26:28.28 it's also been inspiring for them. 00:26:28.28\00:26:30.12 (uplifting piano music) 00:26:32.35\00:26:35.76 - So that was really cool. 00:26:43.47\00:26:44.83 I mean, I didn't get to go, but it looked like 00:26:44.83\00:26:46.67 a really great experience for you guys. 00:26:46.67\00:26:48.40 - It was. 00:26:48.40\00:26:49.54 When we went out with Dr. Jack and his wife, 00:26:49.54\00:26:51.84 it was so inspiring to get to see 00:26:51.84\00:26:54.14 how they worked through the obstacles and challenges 00:26:54.14\00:26:57.21 that they faced to be there to help these people, 00:26:57.21\00:27:00.38 provide dental care for them. 00:27:00.38\00:27:02.28 I mean, we even heard of some people, who, 00:27:02.28\00:27:03.82 because they did not have dental care available, 00:27:03.82\00:27:06.89 they started digging out their own teeth with a machete. 00:27:06.89\00:27:09.09 - The amount of pain you have to be in 00:27:09.09\00:27:11.09 to do that is unbelievable. 00:27:11.09\00:27:13.26 - And then the Karen people. 00:27:13.26\00:27:14.83 Who have gone through so much, so much torture, 00:27:14.83\00:27:18.53 and then having family members and loved ones 00:27:18.53\00:27:20.74 killed in front of them. 00:27:20.74\00:27:22.07 That is so horrible. 00:27:22.07\00:27:24.34 But still, they are some of the happiest people, 00:27:24.34\00:27:27.34 and some of the most receptive people to the gospel, 00:27:27.34\00:27:29.58 that we've met so far on this trip. 00:27:29.58\00:27:31.91 - And what we can take away from that, 00:27:31.91\00:27:33.65 and what we hope you guys take away from that as well, 00:27:33.65\00:27:36.35 is that the challenges in life 00:27:36.35\00:27:38.05 should push us to thank God in all things. 00:27:38.05\00:27:40.79 And no matter what you're going through, 00:27:40.79\00:27:43.16 trust that He will work it out. 00:27:43.16\00:27:45.49 - See you next time on MissionTREK. 00:27:45.49\00:27:47.40 - And please remember to pray for the unreached. 00:27:47.40\00:27:49.83 (inspirational music) 00:27:51.27\00:27:54.50
