(upbeat music) 00:00:00.96\00:00:03.57 - [Mary Ann] We've grown up in the church, 00:00:05.63\00:00:06.94 an have always been somewhat involved in outreach. 00:00:06.94\00:00:09.50 But how can we get involved in missions overseas? 00:00:09.50\00:00:13.07 My name is Mary Ann. 00:00:13.07\00:00:14.54 - [Lilyann] And I'm Lilyann. 00:00:14.54\00:00:16.54 We wanted to find out. 00:00:16.54\00:00:18.15 Join us on our journey, (gong tolling) 00:00:18.15\00:00:22.02 to discover the culture, the lifestyle-- 00:00:22.02\00:00:25.39 - [Mary Ann] The need, and the mission. 00:00:25.39\00:00:27.72 - In two of Southeast Asia's 00:00:27.72\00:00:29.36 least reached countries. 00:00:29.36\00:00:30.86 Welcome to MissionTREK. 00:00:31.99\00:00:34.03 Welcome back to MissionTREK. 00:00:37.57\00:00:39.03 We're so excited that you could join us again. 00:00:39.03\00:00:41.30 - Last week, we left Bangkok 00:00:41.30\00:00:43.20 and traveled north up to Chiang Mai, 00:00:43.20\00:00:45.04 where we met the JFA media team. 00:00:45.04\00:00:47.61 This week, we're gonna travel even further north, 00:00:47.61\00:00:50.18 to Chiang Rai, 00:00:50.18\00:00:51.55 which is near the boarder of Myanmar, 00:00:51.55\00:00:54.45 which used to be known as Burma. 00:00:54.45\00:00:56.08 - We are going to see a very popular tourist destination, 00:00:56.08\00:00:58.82 (speaking in foreign language), 00:00:58.82\00:01:00.16 which means the White Temple. 00:01:00.16\00:01:01.66 It's a very beautiful place. 00:01:01.66\00:01:03.56 - And even though it's meant to be a tourist attraction, 00:01:03.56\00:01:05.99 it gives us a lot of insights 00:01:05.99\00:01:07.66 into how the people over there see life. 00:01:07.66\00:01:10.07 They have a worldview that is very different from ours. 00:01:10.07\00:01:13.03 (ominous music) 00:01:13.03\00:01:15.77 - We looked at pictures 00:01:19.01\00:01:20.34 trying to decide whether we should come here or not, 00:01:20.34\00:01:22.08 and we're like, "Oh, that looks really, really pretty 00:01:22.08\00:01:24.28 "and really cool, we should go." 00:01:24.28\00:01:26.45 When we got here, we're like, 00:01:26.45\00:01:27.82 "Oh wow, the pictures, they didn't do it justice at all." 00:01:27.82\00:01:31.72 - This temple was actually made by an artist, 00:01:31.72\00:01:33.82 not like, a priest or anything, 00:01:33.82\00:01:36.59 it was an artist who, 00:01:36.59\00:01:38.09 this is their interpretation of heaven and hell. 00:01:38.09\00:01:41.73 It's got white and then, like, silver outlines and stuff. 00:01:41.73\00:01:44.83 (ominous music) 00:01:45.90\00:01:48.54 - You can notice on the sidewalk 00:01:49.87\00:01:52.21 there looks like imprints of flames, and there's hands. 00:01:52.21\00:01:56.41 Kinda creepy, but this part is the hell I guess. 00:01:56.41\00:02:01.38 The temple is heaven, so. 00:02:02.18\00:02:03.72 On the way here we kinda had like a season of prayer 00:02:09.79\00:02:14.00 and sang songs and-- 00:02:14.00\00:02:16.56 - Claimed promises, 00:02:16.56\00:02:17.80 because this is a place of devil worship. 00:02:19.57\00:02:20.97 We just wanna make sure that we're protected. 00:02:20.97\00:02:23.37 (peaceful music) 00:02:24.57\00:02:26.47 This place is really, actually incredible. 00:02:26.47\00:02:29.71 It's kinda of like a work of art. 00:02:29.71\00:02:31.45 - [Lilyann] It's easy to sense that there is strong, 00:02:33.78\00:02:36.02 satanic influence in this place. 00:02:36.02\00:02:38.42 You can almost feel the fear and supposed sacredness 00:02:38.42\00:02:41.69 that the people have for this temple. 00:02:41.69\00:02:43.63 This building is actually the bathrooms. 00:02:47.23\00:02:49.56 They are painted gold 00:02:49.56\00:02:51.30 because the artist wanted to demonstrate 00:02:51.30\00:02:52.60 that the treasures of this world won't last. 00:02:52.60\00:02:55.10 What we think is highly valuable really isn't. 00:02:55.10\00:02:58.01 There were these good luck charms that were for sale. 00:02:59.94\00:03:02.48 People were buying them to help ward off the evil spirits. 00:03:02.48\00:03:06.01 It's so sad, 00:03:06.01\00:03:07.65 because they have no idea 00:03:07.65\00:03:08.98 that those meaningless pieces of metal 00:03:08.98\00:03:10.95 can do nothing to help protect them. 00:03:10.95\00:03:13.12 - They have a whole different world view than we do, 00:03:14.39\00:03:16.62 because they are probably constantly in fear 00:03:16.62\00:03:19.93 of offending the spirits and all this stuff, 00:03:19.93\00:03:24.67 like, on and on and on. 00:03:24.67\00:03:26.10 And if they get sick, 00:03:26.10\00:03:27.64 then it's because they didn't do something right, 00:03:27.64\00:03:29.30 or all this stuff. 00:03:29.30\00:03:30.44 So they're like, 00:03:30.44\00:03:32.24 constantly have to try to work hard to be good. 00:03:32.24\00:03:36.11 - I think the gospel would be valuable here, 00:03:36.11\00:03:39.15 but I think it would be a big challenge to teach them. 00:03:39.15\00:03:42.98 - So we're not allowed to take any pictures 00:03:47.99\00:03:50.33 or film in there,, 00:03:51.89\00:03:53.19 I guess because it's sacred and they don't... 00:03:53.19\00:03:55.20 I'm not really sure. 00:03:55.20\00:03:56.20 Anyway, we're not supposed to. 00:03:57.57\00:03:59.03 (ominous music) 00:04:00.84\00:04:03.57 - We just came out of the White Temple, 00:04:14.15\00:04:16.92 and inside there was a Buddha that was all gold. 00:04:16.92\00:04:21.99 And there was-- - A monk, 00:04:22.76\00:04:25.13 sitting in front of it it. 00:04:25.13\00:04:26.46 Like, I swear he was not real, but apparently he was. 00:04:26.46\00:04:30.87 - We didn't even see him breathe, he didn't blink. 00:04:30.87\00:04:33.74 But he was definitely real. 00:04:33.74\00:04:36.37 And it was kinda creepy. 00:04:37.71\00:04:39.97 Like there were paintings all over the walls. 00:04:41.28\00:04:42.34 - This big mural. 00:04:43.31\00:04:44.81 - [James] What did you see in the paintings. 00:04:47.72\00:04:48.62 It was kind of strange. 00:04:48.62\00:04:50.02 Like, we said, it was like an artist interpretation. 00:04:50.02\00:04:54.16 But it was-- - A city skyline. 00:04:54.16\00:04:56.66 And then, like-- - there was the devil. 00:04:57.69\00:05:00.46 And then there was Superman. 00:05:00.46\00:05:02.96 - And minions. 00:05:02.96\00:05:04.80 - Like, a whole bunch of different, weird action figures. 00:05:04.80\00:05:08.40 - We leave with questions in our mind. 00:05:08.40\00:05:10.57 It was interesting. 00:05:10.57\00:05:12.44 - It was definitely an experience. 00:05:13.48\00:05:14.74 (upbeat music) 00:05:17.08\00:05:19.71 - That was so intense. 00:05:25.19\00:05:26.62 - Yeah, the most shocking part 00:05:26.62\00:05:28.59 was all the people writhing in hell 00:05:28.59\00:05:31.09 with guards to protect the entrance to heaven. 00:05:31.09\00:05:34.10 - Yeah, and it seemed like it was up the the individual 00:05:34.10\00:05:36.26 to work their way to get to heaven; 00:05:36.26\00:05:38.63 there was no savior reaching out to help. 00:05:38.63\00:05:40.97 - Ellen White says 00:05:40.97\00:05:42.30 that the difference between true religion and false religion 00:05:42.30\00:05:45.34 is that false religion is based on the idea 00:05:45.34\00:05:47.91 that you can work your way to heaven by yourself, 00:05:47.91\00:05:51.01 whereas we believe that salvation is a free gift 00:05:51.01\00:05:53.92 that's offered to everybody. 00:05:53.92\00:05:55.05 - It's really difficult to claim this free gift, 00:05:55.05\00:05:57.42 because it means that we have to put away our pride. 00:05:57.42\00:05:59.59 But so many people have never even heard 00:05:59.59\00:06:01.56 that this free gift is even out there. 00:06:01.56\00:06:03.83 The real beauty of the character of Christ 00:06:03.83\00:06:05.76 is seen in the life of the believer. 00:06:05.76\00:06:07.40 And that's why it's so important 00:06:07.40\00:06:08.46 for believers to go live among unbelievers; 00:06:08.46\00:06:11.10 so that they can see Jesus. 00:06:11.10\00:06:12.63 - But back to the story, 00:06:12.63\00:06:14.80 our next goal was to visit the Sharon family. 00:06:14.80\00:06:17.31 - They live west of Chiang Mai, 00:06:18.34\00:06:19.81 and are a family that is reaching out to the local 00:06:19.81\00:06:23.41 villages with health and healing. 00:06:23.41\00:06:24.45 - Yeah, but to get there, 00:06:24.45\00:06:25.85 James, our producer, wanted to explore a different way, 00:06:25.85\00:06:28.42 which was fine with us 00:06:28.42\00:06:29.98 'cause we were all really tired of buses. 00:06:29.98\00:06:31.72 - Yeah! 00:06:31.72\00:06:32.85 We bought a couple of used motorbikes 00:06:32.85\00:06:34.72 to do the Mae Hong Son Loop. 00:06:34.72\00:06:36.46 We found out later that it should have taken us three days, 00:06:36.46\00:06:40.23 but since we wanted to see Mr. Leroy 00:06:40.23\00:06:42.60 teaching in one of the refugee camps, 00:06:42.60\00:06:44.77 we had to do the whole 270 mile loop in two days. 00:06:44.77\00:06:48.90 - Yeah, that was pretty crazy, 00:06:48.90\00:06:50.11 and the roads were really windy. 00:06:50.11\00:06:52.01 - They were (chuckling). 00:06:52.01\00:06:53.54 So the first day, we made it to Pai, 00:06:53.54\00:06:55.74 which was about 80 miles into the trip, 00:06:55.74\00:06:58.31 and we spent the night in some really cool bamboo houses. 00:06:58.31\00:07:01.82 - Yeah that was pretty awesome! 00:07:01.82\00:07:02.88 - It was. 00:07:02.88\00:07:04.15 - The next day, though, was really hard, 00:07:04.15\00:07:05.85 because we had to travel 210 miles in just over 12 hours. 00:07:05.85\00:07:10.73 We finally got to the Sharon's house; 00:07:10.73\00:07:12.53 it was really late at night and we were so tired. 00:07:12.53\00:07:15.30 - We're about to head out 00:07:15.30\00:07:18.20 on the Mae Hong Son Loop. 00:07:18.20\00:07:20.30 We've just kinda gotten out of Chaing Mai. 00:07:20.30\00:07:22.54 And so we're gonna stop and get something to eat, 00:07:22.54\00:07:27.61 and then we're gonna be on our way. 00:07:28.64\00:07:29.94 (peaceful music) 00:07:29.94\00:07:32.78 - [Mary Ann] We stopped at this cute little ride-side shop. 00:07:34.12\00:07:36.79 - The food is really good. 00:07:37.59\00:07:39.42 I think we picked the right place to stop. 00:07:39.42\00:07:41.79 (engines revving) 00:07:41.79\00:07:43.99 - And now we're about to head out, 00:07:43.99\00:07:45.69 we're gonna, it's about 2.5 hours to our destination. 00:07:45.69\00:07:49.36 It's a city called Pai. 00:07:49.36\00:07:51.07 So we're gonna spend the night there. 00:07:52.43\00:07:54.30 But we have to get there first. 00:07:55.34\00:07:56.97 - It's supposed to be really curvy between here and there, 00:07:56.97\00:07:59.71 so we're gonna see how this goes. 00:07:59.71\00:08:02.41 (upbeat music) 00:08:02.41\00:08:05.05 The northern part of Thailand 00:08:25.83\00:08:27.20 is mostly untouched by the gospel. 00:08:27.20\00:08:30.11 As far as we know, 00:08:30.11\00:08:31.31 we did not pass any missionaries on the whole loop. 00:08:31.31\00:08:34.31 It's going good so far. 00:08:50.56\00:08:51.69 Like, the corners are getting a lot sharper, 00:08:51.69\00:08:53.73 so we've had some 180s, 00:08:53.73\00:08:55.23 so more what we were expecting. 00:08:55.23\00:08:57.80 - So we just came around this corner, 00:08:57.80\00:08:59.70 - And there's like, this huge black snake 00:08:59.70\00:09:01.57 that was across one whole lane. 00:09:01.57\00:09:04.54 And when we went past it, 00:09:04.54\00:09:07.21 it's head went up, and it was a cobra. 00:09:07.21\00:09:08.88 - And we went past it, 00:09:08.88\00:09:10.85 and it was like, maybe this far from our legs. 00:09:10.85\00:09:13.95 And we're not wearing long pants, so yeah. 00:09:13.95\00:09:18.22 It was a little bit freaky, 00:09:19.32\00:09:21.12 'cause this huge snake, like, I don't know, 00:09:21.12\00:09:22.92 maybe five feet. 00:09:22.92\00:09:24.39 - I'm frustrated at the truck driver. 00:09:24.39\00:09:25.19 This truck driver stopped, 00:09:25.19\00:09:26.83 and waited for the snake to get out of the way 00:09:26.83\00:09:28.56 before it went on. 00:09:28.56\00:09:29.96 - She just wants the truck driver to have killed it. 00:09:29.96\00:09:32.53 - So now I've seen a cobra in life. 00:09:33.64\00:09:35.50 - Very close, very close. - Really close. 00:09:36.74\00:09:39.07 (upbeat music) 00:09:39.07\00:09:41.71 - We got to Pai, 00:09:44.98\00:09:46.82 took us about a half hour to find a place to say, 00:09:46.82\00:09:49.32 like, everything was full. 00:09:49.32\00:09:50.85 It's this cute little place with bungalows. 00:09:50.85\00:09:54.29 So we're about to go to bed. 00:09:54.29\00:09:55.79 - Looking forward to sleeping well, 00:09:56.93\00:09:58.53 we have a lot of running tomorrow. 00:09:58.53\00:09:59.96 (birds chirping) 00:10:02.96\00:10:05.80 So we had breakfast this morning 00:10:08.40\00:10:09.60 and then we hit the road. 00:10:09.60\00:10:10.77 - And we're heading all the way 00:10:10.77\00:10:13.48 to (speaking in foreign language), 00:10:13.48\00:10:15.08 which is like 200 miles. 00:10:15.08\00:10:16.18 So we're gonna be pretty sore by the end of it. 00:10:16.18\00:10:18.41 - As we ride today, 00:10:18.41\00:10:19.48 we'll be going through lots of mountains, 00:10:19.48\00:10:20.98 and there'll be lots of hill tribes 00:10:20.98\00:10:23.79 that we go through their territory. 00:10:23.79\00:10:26.09 - There's the (speaking in foreign language). 00:10:26.09\00:10:27.66 But it's really pretty. 00:10:34.46\00:10:35.80 There's awesome views, lots of mountains. 00:10:35.80\00:10:39.23 - Just gotta keep riding. 00:10:39.23\00:10:40.44 (peaceful music) 00:10:42.64\00:10:45.37 - So, we're driving and we saw a sign 00:10:56.72\00:11:00.69 that said Lisu Lodge. 00:11:00.69\00:11:02.72 So this is actually a Lisu village. 00:11:02.72\00:11:06.26 - I've never seen a Lisu village before, 00:11:07.40\00:11:08.50 so this is cool how the village is built 00:11:08.50\00:11:11.67 just on the side of the mountain. 00:11:11.67\00:11:13.67 The villages I've been in are more in the valley, 00:11:16.44\00:11:18.71 so this is cool. 00:11:18.71\00:11:20.18 - See right here? 00:11:26.05\00:11:27.75 This is my shift lever. 00:11:27.75\00:11:29.62 And it's supposed to go on right down there. 00:11:30.99\00:11:35.42 - It's stuck in first. 00:11:35.42\00:11:37.23 We're trying to decide what to do, 00:11:37.23\00:11:39.03 because the closest town on the map is, like, 00:11:39.03\00:11:41.66 44 kilometers away. 00:11:41.66\00:11:43.16 Thankfully a Native came and stopped and ask what was wrong, 00:11:43.16\00:11:47.80 and so he was like, "Follow me." 00:11:48.70\00:11:50.04 And he ran a school, 00:11:50.04\00:11:51.27 and he's helping get the bike fixed. 00:11:51.27\00:11:54.74 (triumphant music) 00:11:55.94\00:11:58.81 That was so much fun! 00:12:20.97\00:12:22.70 - It really was. 00:12:22.70\00:12:24.21 At the end, though, 00:12:24.21\00:12:25.74 it started to get a little more challenging. 00:12:25.74\00:12:27.08 We had to travel the last few hours after dark, 00:12:27.08\00:12:29.21 and the road was steep and it was cold. 00:12:29.21\00:12:31.71 And then my dad's shift lever broke again! 00:12:31.71\00:12:33.98 - Yeah, but this time it was in second gear, 00:12:33.98\00:12:36.38 which made it really hard to get up the last few hills. 00:12:36.38\00:12:39.02 You guys even had to use your legs 00:12:39.02\00:12:40.66 to try and make it to the top. 00:12:40.66\00:12:42.06 - Yeah, that was really challenging! 00:12:42.06\00:12:43.73 - But thankfully, even though we had some issues 00:12:43.73\00:12:46.29 along the way, 00:12:46.29\00:12:47.66 it still didn't slow us down very long overall. 00:12:47.66\00:12:50.73 - It was a miracle, really. - It was, it was. 00:12:50.73\00:12:52.83 - So we ended up arriving at the Sharon's house 00:12:52.83\00:12:55.54 around 10 o'clock at night, 00:12:55.54\00:12:57.04 and we had to get up at five the next morning 00:12:57.04\00:12:58.91 and ride three more hours 00:12:58.91\00:13:00.44 to see Mr. Sharon at the Mae Ra Mu Refugee Camp. 00:13:00.44\00:13:02.88 - That was crazy! 00:13:02.88\00:13:04.21 It was so hard to get up and go ride again the next morning. 00:13:04.21\00:13:08.05 But when you're in the mission field 00:13:08.05\00:13:09.82 you have to be willing to do things for the gospel's sake. 00:13:09.82\00:13:12.29 - But we did get to hear an amazing story 00:13:12.29\00:13:15.02 about how God's truth can reach lives. 00:13:15.02\00:13:17.46 (peaceful music) 00:13:17.46\00:13:20.26 - [Lilyann] The Sharon family moved the Thailand 00:13:24.60\00:13:26.94 nine years ago, 00:13:26.94\00:13:28.27 and they have done ministry in many different ways, 00:13:28.27\00:13:30.51 including teaching English, 00:13:30.51\00:13:32.04 training local missionaries, 00:13:32.04\00:13:33.54 and taking care of unwanted children. 00:13:33.54\00:13:35.91 A few years ago, 00:13:35.91\00:13:37.05 when they had to close their school and move, 00:13:37.05\00:13:38.98 because of new laws, 00:13:38.98\00:13:40.55 they were praying about where to go, 00:13:40.55\00:13:42.45 and there was a village that wanted them to come 00:13:42.45\00:13:44.62 and teach English and the Bible too. 00:13:44.62\00:13:46.79 A couple years ago, 00:13:47.79\00:13:49.26 Lisa told the story of the property 00:13:49.26\00:13:51.03 and how they built their house. 00:13:51.03\00:13:53.29 - When we moved here, they offered us this land. 00:13:53.29\00:13:56.77 But we didn't know 00:13:56.77\00:13:58.03 that people had been killed on this place, 00:13:58.03\00:14:00.47 and so it was cursed. 00:14:00.47\00:14:02.40 And so anybody who stayed here should have died. 00:14:02.40\00:14:06.07 And so simply living here is a witness to the village, 00:14:06.07\00:14:09.44 and everybody in every village in this whole area 00:14:09.44\00:14:14.02 knows about it (laughing). 00:14:14.02\00:14:15.92 Here we are, we're still alive! 00:14:15.92\00:14:18.32 The only stipulation was, 00:14:18.32\00:14:19.52 is the government said 00:14:19.52\00:14:21.22 that we had to build permanent buildings. 00:14:21.22\00:14:23.12 They didn't want bamboo buildings anymore. 00:14:23.12\00:14:26.06 We had to move 20 dump truck loads of dirt 00:14:26.06\00:14:30.97 out of the mountain in order to get started, 00:14:30.97\00:14:33.03 and we did this all by hand with just a hoe and our backs, 00:14:33.03\00:14:36.00 and little tiny buckets. 00:14:36.00\00:14:37.51 So that took us a while (chuckling). 00:14:38.64\00:14:40.38 It was really cool, 00:14:40.38\00:14:42.01 because when we first started digging, 00:14:42.01\00:14:43.45 we had nothing in the bank account 00:14:43.45\00:14:46.78 for this project; nothing. 00:14:46.78\00:14:49.58 And as we dug, 00:14:49.58\00:14:51.85 I mean, we didn't get money while we were digging, 00:14:53.15\00:14:54.76 but as soon as it was time to pour the foundation, 00:14:54.76\00:14:57.56 money came in for the foundation. 00:14:57.56\00:15:00.20 And as soon as we needed to start the walls, 00:15:00.20\00:15:02.13 money came in for the walls. 00:15:02.13\00:15:03.77 And so each step of the way, 00:15:03.77\00:15:05.67 we've gotten just exactly what we needed to keep going. 00:15:05.67\00:15:09.20 (peaceful music) 00:15:09.20\00:15:12.01 - Knock on the door. 00:15:14.81\00:15:16.54 - We're in the Mae Ra Mu refugee camp. 00:15:35.26\00:15:37.37 And we finally got to Mr. Sharon where he's teaching. 00:15:37.37\00:15:41.44 He has a classroom, 00:15:41.44\00:15:43.51 and so you can hear them in the background. 00:15:43.51\00:15:46.41 So he's currently teaching a class by using the Bible 00:15:46.41\00:15:49.61 to teach them English. 00:15:49.61\00:15:51.18 So we're here just to learn about, 00:15:51.18\00:15:53.92 kinda more about what he does 00:15:53.92\00:15:55.85 and what life is like in a refugee camp. 00:15:55.85\00:15:57.92 - [Leroy] As though they had been waiting 00:15:59.02\00:16:00.09 ages and ages. 00:16:01.02\00:16:02.19 What is ages? 00:16:02.19\00:16:03.26 Long, long time. 00:16:03.26\00:16:05.63 Ages and ages. 00:16:05.63\00:16:06.73 - We're still at the refugee camp. 00:16:06.73\00:16:07.96 We just talked to the principal of the school here. 00:16:07.96\00:16:10.90 It's actually a junior college. 00:16:10.90\00:16:13.57 And he told us a little bit about the camp. 00:16:14.64\00:16:16.94 It was founded in 1985. 00:16:16.94\00:16:18.94 They can't actually leave the camp, 00:16:20.41\00:16:23.18 because they're refugees from Burma. 00:16:23.18\00:16:24.88 - It's really hard for them to get any education. 00:16:24.88\00:16:27.92 They aren't really allowed to work outside of the camp, 00:16:27.92\00:16:31.29 so they don't have any money really. 00:16:31.29\00:16:35.29 - It's really good that they have a school here. 00:16:35.29\00:16:39.09 (hopeful music) 00:16:40.13\00:16:42.73 - As we watched Mr. Sharon teach English, 00:16:42.73\00:16:44.60 we were impressed by his enthusiasm and commitment. 00:16:44.60\00:16:47.34 He uses Uncle Arthur's "My Bible Friends" 00:16:47.34\00:16:50.41 to teach English, along with Bible stories. 00:16:50.41\00:16:52.87 We could tell he loves sharing the truth in this simple way, 00:16:52.87\00:16:56.31 so we asked him to tell us about his experience 00:16:56.31\00:16:58.55 while teaching in the refugee camp. 00:16:58.55\00:17:00.62 - I laid down right here 00:17:00.62\00:17:05.15 about maybe 45 minutes during the day to rest. 00:17:05.15\00:17:10.23 Other work, all the other time I'm speaking, 00:17:11.79\00:17:15.83 or I'm walking and greeting people, 00:17:15.83\00:17:18.53 or I'm in their house, 00:17:18.53\00:17:19.93 I'm eating with them, I'm all the rest of the time. 00:17:19.93\00:17:23.77 When I'm standing in front of the class, 00:17:23.77\00:17:27.31 talking, half-preaching, but talking, 00:17:27.31\00:17:30.91 that is sowing seeds. 00:17:30.91\00:17:34.32 Teaching the children, the students, to learn on their own. 00:17:34.32\00:17:39.22 I'm teaching them they can read on their own, 00:17:40.36\00:17:42.66 they can understand on their own. 00:17:42.66\00:17:44.73 Just across from here I sat in the Baptist worship service. 00:17:46.09\00:17:51.13 I didn't say anything, I can't understand anything. 00:17:53.03\00:17:55.54 But they like it that I'm there, right? 00:17:55.54\00:17:58.64 I'm a foreigner, I'm kind of an attraction. 00:17:58.64\00:18:00.74 But after the worship service, 00:18:01.98\00:18:04.38 the head elder who was in charge of it, 00:18:04.38\00:18:08.62 he wants to talk about religion, theology with me. 00:18:08.62\00:18:12.89 Well how can we do that, right? 00:18:12.89\00:18:15.06 But there's one girl that can speak English. 00:18:15.06\00:18:18.49 She's a Baptist. 00:18:18.49\00:18:19.96 She can speak to me. 00:18:19.96\00:18:21.50 So I said, "Okay, if you wanna talk religion." 00:18:21.50\00:18:25.03 So he begins to talk about the Sabbath. 00:18:25.03\00:18:27.77 Well, you know, I didn't really want to start with that, 00:18:27.77\00:18:30.61 but he wanted to talk about it. 00:18:30.61\00:18:32.14 So I begin to share about the Sabbath. 00:18:32.14\00:18:34.24 I have to speak to her. 00:18:34.24\00:18:36.58 She speaks to him. 00:18:36.58\00:18:38.38 He then speaks to her. 00:18:38.38\00:18:40.42 She speaks to me, right? 00:18:40.42\00:18:42.62 So it's going back and forth. 00:18:42.62\00:18:44.62 And she's listening to him, "Really?" 00:18:44.62\00:18:47.32 So she tells me, she listens to me. 00:18:48.96\00:18:51.53 "Really, I never knew that!" 00:18:51.53\00:18:53.16 So then she tells him (laughing). 00:18:53.16\00:18:55.16 So this girl is able to hear both sides of it, 00:18:55.16\00:18:59.03 and she's the one relaying the message. 00:18:59.03\00:19:02.37 And I know she's relaying it correctly. 00:19:02.37\00:19:04.64 And then, you know, all the excuses are coming. 00:19:05.77\00:19:09.58 So I'm thinking, you know, 00:19:09.58\00:19:11.31 this is gonna go nowhere, 00:19:11.31\00:19:13.52 because I can't speak their language. 00:19:13.52\00:19:16.22 So God prompted me, ask them who is your God. 00:19:16.22\00:19:21.29 Who is your God? 00:19:23.22\00:19:24.76 So I told the girl, I said, 00:19:24.76\00:19:26.53 "Ask the head elder, 'Who is your God?'" 00:19:26.53\00:19:30.00 So she asked him. 00:19:30.00\00:19:31.63 He goes hmm. 00:19:31.63\00:19:34.27 Thinking about that. 00:19:34.27\00:19:35.10 And I said, "Well? 00:19:35.10\00:19:36.00 "If God is your God, believe the Bible. 00:19:37.21\00:19:41.08 "Believe what the Bible says. 00:19:41.88\00:19:43.38 "But if you are God, you decide, 00:19:44.18\00:19:47.38 "you decide what you believe. 00:19:47.38\00:19:48.88 "If your church is God, follow them. 00:19:50.02\00:19:52.92 "If I am God, follow me. 00:19:53.86\00:19:56.32 "But don't follow me, I'm not God." 00:19:56.32\00:19:58.49 That man got it. 00:19:59.59\00:20:01.66 He's thinking about that. 00:20:02.46\00:20:03.73 He then begins to talk to about 20 people, 00:20:05.17\00:20:10.24 maybe as many as 30 people in the room 00:20:11.34\00:20:13.07 that had been listening. 00:20:14.71\00:20:16.58 He begins to talk to them in Karen, 00:20:16.58\00:20:18.08 I don't know what he's saying. 00:20:18.08\00:20:19.91 The little girl, her eyes got really big. 00:20:19.91\00:20:23.89 She goes, "He's saying that you're right. 00:20:23.89\00:20:28.79 "He's telling the people everything that you just told 00:20:28.79\00:20:33.86 us." You don't get pictures of stuff like that. 00:20:38.17\00:20:41.14 That is what God is doing. 00:20:41.14\00:20:43.84 Doesn't happen very often, not very often. 00:20:43.84\00:20:47.44 Once in a while. 00:20:47.44\00:20:49.08 And if you bring the camera, 00:20:50.75\00:20:52.11 it usually spoils it, yeah. 00:20:53.15\00:20:55.62 But I was amazed. 00:20:56.79\00:20:58.55 He talked for a while. 00:20:58.55\00:20:59.95 I can't say nothing 00:21:00.92\00:21:01.99 'cause I don't know what he's talking about. 00:21:01.99\00:21:04.96 Then everybody stopped talking, 00:21:04.96\00:21:06.36 and we began to eat and talk about normal things, right? 00:21:06.36\00:21:11.27 God planted lots of seeds that I could not have planted. 00:21:13.10\00:21:18.17 - That story was so moving. 00:21:21.41\00:21:23.21 - Yeah, Mr. Sharon is so on fire 00:21:23.21\00:21:25.61 about the work that God is doing there. 00:21:25.61\00:21:27.42 He says there are so many opportunities 00:21:27.42\00:21:29.45 to share the three angel's message 00:21:29.45\00:21:31.25 that he can't fill them all, 00:21:31.25\00:21:32.52 so he's praying for more volunteers to come 00:21:32.52\00:21:34.86 and reach the other villagers in refugee camps up there. 00:21:34.86\00:21:37.59 - Yeah, so while we were at the refugee camp, 00:21:37.59\00:21:40.56 back at the Sharon's house 00:21:40.56\00:21:41.83 a group of local villagers came, 00:21:41.83\00:21:44.03 and one lady had been having seizures and fainting spells. 00:21:44.03\00:21:47.60 She'd even been to the hospital without any relief. 00:21:47.60\00:21:50.11 - Years ago, in 1993, I went to Russia, 00:21:53.54\00:21:57.71 and it changed my life. 00:21:57.71\00:21:59.71 But you know, there was tons of people 00:21:59.71\00:22:01.92 that went over there at the same time I did, 00:22:01.92\00:22:03.39 and it doesn't change everybody, 00:22:03.39\00:22:05.42 but if you really want something better, 00:22:05.42\00:22:10.49 and you're asking God to change you, 00:22:11.63\00:22:15.43 a short-term mission trip can change your life. 00:22:15.43\00:22:18.53 (peaceful music) 00:22:20.50\00:22:23.30 - [Mary Ann] Villagers often come to the Sharon's house 00:22:26.91\00:22:28.91 seeking medical care, 00:22:28.91\00:22:30.25 even though Mrs. Sharon is only an EMT 00:22:30.25\00:22:32.51 and has limited resources. 00:22:32.51\00:22:34.28 - I'm not a doctor, I don't know what to do (laughing)! 00:22:38.32\00:22:42.52 I mean, I can just pray about it, 00:22:42.52\00:22:44.26 praying, and ideas come to my mind, 00:22:44.26\00:22:46.03 but when it's that serious, 00:22:46.03\00:22:50.53 it's like, she's having seizures, 00:22:50.53\00:22:52.73 she can't walk half the time. 00:22:53.77\00:22:55.17 Said the hospitals can't help her. 00:22:56.37\00:22:58.47 They give her barbiturates, but (sighing). 00:22:58.47\00:23:00.48 I just wish I could help 'em. 00:23:03.81\00:23:05.38 I'm sorry. 00:23:08.02\00:23:08.92 She definitely has a circulation problem, 00:23:16.76\00:23:18.63 she's extremely anemic, she's bleeding internally. 00:23:18.63\00:23:21.90 And so the only thing I can think of doing 00:23:25.30\00:23:26.97 is I gave her a tea to stop the bleeding internally, 00:23:26.97\00:23:30.24 and I'm giving her whole grain rice so that hopefully 00:23:30.24\00:23:34.11 it'll get her bowels moving more regularly, 00:23:34.11\00:23:36.88 'cause she's really constipated also. 00:23:36.88\00:23:39.41 And lots of tea and lots of water and vitamins 00:23:40.52\00:23:45.02 to help with the anemia. 00:23:45.02\00:23:46.49 But unless I can stop the bleeding 00:23:48.02\00:23:49.39 I don't think you can stop the anemia. 00:23:49.39\00:23:51.59 I don't know enough to know what I'm doing, 00:23:51.59\00:23:54.13 but I, this is what came to my mind. 00:23:54.13\00:23:58.13 And I know God gives me ideas. 00:23:58.13\00:24:00.20 - [James] So do you get groups like this very often? 00:24:02.57\00:24:06.17 - Yeah. 00:24:07.34\00:24:08.24 Or whenever I go to the village. 00:24:09.58\00:24:11.25 Usually people start gathering, 00:24:12.05\00:24:14.28 and it's all so big. 00:24:15.65\00:24:17.89 It's like, things that I don't know how to do. 00:24:17.89\00:24:21.39 I'm just an EMT, 00:24:21.39\00:24:22.86 I'm supposed to take 'em to a hospital, you know? 00:24:22.86\00:24:24.89 I'm not supposed to have to treat them. 00:24:24.89\00:24:27.03 But God has given me a lot of resources. 00:24:27.03\00:24:30.77 I have natural remedies books. 00:24:30.77\00:24:33.34 So I go to those whenever I can. 00:24:35.00\00:24:37.77 But like this, I'm gonna have to study 00:24:37.77\00:24:40.68 and try to figure out all these things 00:24:40.68\00:24:42.24 before I go back and see if there's anything else 00:24:42.24\00:24:46.25 I can be doing. 00:24:46.25\00:24:47.15 You know, when they're just villagers, it's easier, 00:24:54.06\00:24:58.96 because then you don't really think of them personally. 00:24:58.96\00:25:01.76 But I asked God to give me love for them and I do, 00:25:03.23\00:25:07.80 I just, I love them so much 00:25:07.80\00:25:09.47 and I don't want them to be hurting, with no help. 00:25:09.47\00:25:14.01 I mean, if I'm the best they have, that's pretty bad. 00:25:15.44\00:25:17.88 But anyway. 00:25:20.75\00:25:21.88 I'm thankful that I have what I do, 00:25:25.19\00:25:26.99 I'm not unthankful. 00:25:29.19\00:25:30.29 It's just that I wish I knew more. 00:25:30.29\00:25:32.19 - [James] Would a nurse be helpful? 00:25:34.36\00:25:35.23 - A nurse would be awesome (laughing). 00:25:36.83\00:25:38.80 The handwoman has been begging for a nurse, 00:25:40.60\00:25:43.20 so I've been asking people, but it always falls though, so. 00:25:43.20\00:25:46.21 The only thing is, it's gotta be a special nurse. 00:25:48.31\00:25:50.88 If it's just somebody who's gonna give 'em drugs, 00:25:52.65\00:25:55.38 that's not gonna help 'em. 00:25:55.38\00:25:56.69 I want them to be able to get well, 00:25:56.69\00:25:58.79 and to know what they're doing, 00:25:58.79\00:26:00.79 and their lifestyle that's causing them problems. 00:26:00.79\00:26:03.69 And so I try to not give 'em any drugs unless I have to. 00:26:03.69\00:26:07.50 Usually I just use herbs and things, 00:26:08.90\00:26:12.10 or especially stuff that they can do themselves. 00:26:12.10\00:26:15.30 I wish I had the gift of tongues 00:26:19.31\00:26:20.71 so I could speak to them myself. 00:26:20.71\00:26:22.58 The translation thing 00:26:22.58\00:26:23.68 was just almost impossible to deal with. 00:26:24.68\00:26:26.72 I mean, I don't know for sure 00:26:26.72\00:26:28.35 that she's even hearing what I'm saying. 00:26:28.35\00:26:31.32 So that's why young people are important. 00:26:31.32\00:26:34.86 Because us old folks (laughing), 00:26:34.86\00:26:36.52 we can't learn languages very easily, 00:26:37.53\00:26:40.76 but young people can. 00:26:40.76\00:26:42.13 So I'm praying for young people 00:26:43.90\00:26:46.50 who are really, really dedicated. 00:26:46.50\00:26:49.17 (peaceful music) 00:26:50.91\00:26:53.74 - It's really inspiring what God is doing there. 00:27:12.36\00:27:15.10 Mrs. Sharon had prayed for God 00:27:15.10\00:27:16.97 to give her a love for the people, 00:27:16.97\00:27:18.70 and he's answering that. 00:27:18.70\00:27:20.04 - Yeah, and we each should pray to have that love 00:27:20.04\00:27:22.47 for the unreached put in our hearts, 00:27:22.47\00:27:24.31 so that we are willing to work for him in the future. 00:27:24.31\00:27:26.98 - Yeah, but no matter where you are, 00:27:26.98\00:27:29.28 you can do something. 00:27:29.28\00:27:30.58 For example, last Christmas we had the opportunity 00:27:30.58\00:27:33.35 to go make gift boxes and hand them out 00:27:33.35\00:27:36.25 to the refugee children in our local area. 00:27:36.25\00:27:38.79 There's plenty for everybody to do. 00:27:38.79\00:27:40.72 But the point is that each of us can be the hands and feet 00:27:40.72\00:27:43.66 of Jesus no matter where we are. 00:27:43.66\00:27:45.36 - See you next time on MissionTREK. 00:27:45.36\00:27:47.56 - And please remember to pray for the unreached. 00:27:47.56\00:27:50.63 (peaceful music) 00:27:50.63\00:27:53.47
