(mumbles) 00:02:10.13\00:02:12.69 (laughing) 00:02:16.10\00:02:18.43 - (mumbles) 00:02:18.43\00:02:20.17 - What's that? 00:02:20.17\00:02:21.00 - No. 00:02:21.00\00:02:22.24 - I like the cowboy's hats. 00:02:22.24\00:02:24.34 - What? 00:02:24.34\00:02:25.17 (acoustic music) 00:02:25.17\00:02:27.71 - It's great just being around all the people 00:02:27.71\00:02:29.34 and seeing, like all the activity. 00:02:29.34\00:02:32.81 - And what they do everyday. 00:02:34.05\00:02:35.28 Like, they're here everyday selling stuff and. 00:02:35.28\00:02:38.69 - This is just life to them, 00:02:38.69\00:02:39.82 living on the river in little shacks and 00:02:39.82\00:02:42.06 we saw people that were fishing in the water 00:02:43.12\00:02:44.99 and that's their food, so. 00:02:44.99\00:02:47.13 (inspiring music) 00:02:47.13\00:02:49.93 - They are loose, Lilyann. 00:02:53.37\00:02:55.40 - Oh, my word! 00:02:55.40\00:02:56.67 You're getting this on camera. 00:02:56.67\00:02:59.11 - Snakes are cool, but she doesn't like them. 00:02:59.11\00:03:01.31 - Oh, look at like, the- 00:03:02.21\00:03:03.65 - (mumbles) very cheap for you. 00:03:04.75\00:03:07.28 (inspiring music) 00:03:08.95\00:03:11.85 (group chatters) 00:03:12.99\00:03:16.12 - No, no. 00:03:16.12\00:03:16.96 - [Anonymous Man] No? 00:03:16.96\00:03:17.76 - I can't (drowned out by crowd) 00:03:17.76\00:03:19.83 (inspiring music) 00:03:19.83\00:03:22.70 (crowd chatters) 00:03:39.25\00:03:42.05 - [Mary Ann] Are you having fun? 00:03:50.76\00:03:52.36 - Yeah. 00:03:52.36\00:03:53.29 It's really interesting, really cool. 00:03:53.29\00:03:56.70 (inspiring music) 00:03:56.70\00:03:59.50 - Pythons don't bite people 00:04:17.22\00:04:18.85 - No, they just squeeze the life out of you. 00:04:18.85\00:04:22.59 (inspiring music) 00:04:23.49\00:04:26.39 (crowd chatters) 00:04:30.20\00:04:33.03 - [Anonymous Man] (mumbles) Sorry. 00:04:41.54\00:04:45.85 (gasps) Pooping! (laughs) 00:04:49.65\00:04:54.72 No. 00:04:58.99\00:04:59.89 - [Lilyann] It's good to, the difference, 00:05:03.00\00:05:05.63 Like in America, you would never see something like this 00:05:05.63\00:05:08.14 and it's really good cultural experience 00:05:08.14\00:05:10.91 to see how they actually live. 00:05:10.91\00:05:13.58 - [Anonymous Voice] Water bottle, thank you. 00:05:13.58\00:05:15.21 - Eugh! 00:05:15.21\00:05:16.04 (laughing) 00:05:16.04\00:05:17.58 (inspiring music) 00:05:17.58\00:05:20.48 - (drowned out by crowd) 00:05:24.85\00:05:28.36 - (screams) 00:05:30.39\00:05:32.79 - This is so cool! 00:05:38.80\00:05:40.64 - It's really cool! 00:05:40.64\00:05:42.34 It's just a little bit freaky. 00:05:42.34\00:05:44.91 So, so cool. 00:05:47.34\00:05:48.41 - [Anonymous Male] Lilyann, do you wanna try it? 00:05:50.85\00:05:52.41 - No, no, no, no. 00:05:52.41\00:05:53.25 I am not a snake person. 00:05:53.25\00:05:54.72 I'd rather just watch them. 00:05:54.72\00:05:56.65 - No. 00:05:56.65\00:05:57.99 - [Lilyann] Okay, so we're about to get on a boat 00:05:57.99\00:06:00.09 and go through the village this time instead of the market 00:06:00.09\00:06:02.89 like we did last time. 00:06:02.89\00:06:04.56 It's gonna be a faster boat. 00:06:04.56\00:06:06.16 It has a motor, so. 00:06:06.16\00:06:08.20 It's gonna be awesome! 00:06:08.20\00:06:10.57 (inspiring music) 00:06:10.57\00:06:13.47 We were on the boat going through the village 00:06:39.96\00:06:42.30 and they just dropped us off here 00:06:42.30\00:06:44.90 so we're not really sure what we're doing right now. 00:06:44.90\00:06:47.10 So, as we were on the boat, 00:06:47.10\00:06:48.90 I was just looking at, 00:06:48.90\00:06:50.01 like how life's so much different here. 00:06:50.01\00:06:51.91 They just live in little shacks along the river 00:06:51.91\00:06:55.11 and all their trash and sewer just gets run into the water. 00:06:55.11\00:06:59.21 So I was thinking like, 00:06:59.21\00:07:00.68 what if this is the only part of the world you'd ever seen, 00:07:00.68\00:07:02.12 like this is the only life you've ever known? 00:07:02.12\00:07:03.69 For all these people, that's their reality, 00:07:03.69\00:07:06.09 so it's just we have to reach them somehow 00:07:06.09\00:07:10.03 and you have to be willing to sacrifice a lot to 00:07:10.03\00:07:12.46 to come and live like they do. 00:07:13.90\00:07:15.46 - This stuff here is like 00:07:17.83\00:07:19.20 the traditional tools that they use 00:07:19.20\00:07:21.87 for agriculture, fishing, transportation. 00:07:21.87\00:07:26.94 So we have, like, different things 00:07:28.04\00:07:29.34 like boats and fish traps and plows and scoops 00:07:29.34\00:07:33.92 and just a bunch of really cool stuff 00:07:36.08\00:07:38.62 that's really cool to see 00:07:38.62\00:07:40.12 like the different culture 00:07:40.12\00:07:41.46 and what sort of other tools are different from ours. 00:07:41.46\00:07:44.59 - They put a lot of us in this van. 00:07:44.59\00:07:46.73 Last time we, on the way here, we only had 12 00:07:46.73\00:07:48.90 and I think we have like 16. 00:07:48.90\00:07:51.30 - That's good. 00:07:53.47\00:07:54.30 I like that one. 00:07:54.30\00:07:55.10 - So it's a little tight. 00:07:55.10\00:07:55.97 (somber music) 00:07:55.97\00:07:58.64 - [Anonymous Male] What did you think 00:08:04.45\00:08:05.61 of the whole floating market? 00:08:05.61\00:08:06.98 - It was really, really awesome that we got to go. 00:08:06.98\00:08:11.09 - [Mary Ann] It was, it was incredible experience. 00:08:11.09\00:08:13.52 I got to hold a boa constrictor, 00:08:13.52\00:08:15.82 a really, really big one, and a slow loris 00:08:15.82\00:08:19.13 and they're so awesome. 00:08:19.13\00:08:21.36 Very, very glad that we were able to go. 00:08:22.50\00:08:25.73 She, she didn't hold it. 00:08:25.73\00:08:27.80 She's too chicken. 00:08:27.80\00:08:29.17 - No, I touched the slow loris 00:08:32.07\00:08:34.28 and I looked at the boa constrictor. 00:08:34.28\00:08:38.11 This evening, we are going to a night market, 00:08:38.11\00:08:40.18 so that should be cool, 00:08:40.18\00:08:41.52 'cause neither one of use have done that before either. 00:08:41.52\00:08:44.32 We are in a taxi, which you probably can notice. 00:08:45.75\00:08:49.46 - We've reached the market, 00:08:49.46\00:08:51.39 but we have no way to contact the other half of our group. 00:08:51.39\00:08:56.23 And they're not here yet 00:08:56.23\00:08:58.80 or they're not where we are, 00:08:58.80\00:09:00.90 so we don't really know how to find them. 00:09:00.90\00:09:05.97 So we just have to pray right now. 00:09:08.34\00:09:11.08 - [Lilyann] After a few more minutes of anxious waiting, 00:09:12.48\00:09:14.38 the other half of the group did show up 00:09:14.38\00:09:16.42 and we were able to venture into the public market area. 00:09:16.42\00:09:19.59 There were a lot of different things for sale. 00:09:19.59\00:09:21.99 Of course, Mary Ann found the puppies. 00:09:21.99\00:09:24.03 They also had a local food market, 00:09:25.63\00:09:27.56 so we went there to sample some delicious delicacies. 00:09:27.56\00:09:30.80 Some looked healthy and some didn't, 00:09:30.80\00:09:32.83 and others looked really spicy. 00:09:32.83\00:09:34.60 (calm music) 00:09:35.70\00:09:38.21 After that, we went out into the Chatuchak night market, 00:09:40.61\00:09:43.48 where hundreds of vendors have their stalls set up 00:09:43.48\00:09:46.11 selling all kinds of stuff. 00:09:46.11\00:09:47.92 It is very popular with the locals there 00:09:47.92\00:09:50.12 because you can find great deals. 00:09:50.12\00:09:52.79 Shouldn't there be a booth 00:09:52.79\00:09:53.86 where people can learn about Jesus, also? 00:09:53.86\00:09:56.83 So we've been visiting all these markets 00:09:56.83\00:09:58.53 and doing lots of touristy stuff 00:09:58.53\00:10:02.03 that not many missionaries spend a lot of time 00:10:02.03\00:10:05.27 doing touristy stuff, 00:10:05.27\00:10:06.90 because they are more trying to reach people, obviously. 00:10:06.90\00:10:10.94 But we think it's good to get to know the culture, 00:10:10.94\00:10:13.41 get to know the lifestyle of the locals 00:10:13.41\00:10:16.41 and that way you can reach them more on a level 00:10:16.41\00:10:21.28 that they recognize and understand better 00:10:21.28\00:10:25.99 and can connect with. 00:10:25.99\00:10:28.16 Also, when missionaries, like, 00:10:28.16\00:10:29.92 they have their families come to visit them, 00:10:29.92\00:10:31.76 when they do touristy stuff with them 00:10:31.76\00:10:34.86 and take like, a vacation kind of, 00:10:34.86\00:10:37.67 and then they have places to come and hang out 00:10:37.67\00:10:41.54 and visit with the people also 00:10:41.54\00:10:43.94 and with their family. 00:10:43.94\00:10:45.74 - [Mary Ann] We were tired as we headed back 00:10:45.74\00:10:47.34 to our hotel in Tuk Tuk. 00:10:47.34\00:10:49.68 (calm music) 00:10:49.68\00:10:52.08 - Well, that was well worth getting up early for. 00:10:54.35\00:10:56.48 - Yep, that was a lot of fun. 00:10:56.48\00:10:58.35 - It was. 00:10:58.35\00:10:59.62 - We got to, I mean, I got to hold a snake. 00:10:59.62\00:11:02.26 You were a little hesitant. 00:11:02.26\00:11:03.99 - I was very happy not to be part of that. 00:11:03.99\00:11:07.50 - It was fun though. 00:11:07.50\00:11:08.33 It was big and cuddly. 00:11:08.33\00:11:10.43 - Hardly cuddly. 00:11:10.43\00:11:11.57 - Not words people would usually use 00:11:11.57\00:11:13.30 to describe a snake but- 00:11:13.30\00:11:14.67 - Not words normal people use to describe a snake. 00:11:14.67\00:11:17.11 - True, true. 00:11:17.11\00:11:18.74 - Was like weird looking and weird feeling 00:11:18.74\00:11:21.01 and huge and scary. 00:11:21.01\00:11:23.14 - Well, obviously, I enjoyed the snake, 00:11:23.14\00:11:24.78 but what did you enjoy? 00:11:24.78\00:11:26.05 - I enjoyed the boat ride. 00:11:26.85\00:11:28.45 That was fun. 00:11:28.45\00:11:29.25 - That was fun too, that was. 00:11:29.25\00:11:30.35 - The one with the motor was better 00:11:30.35\00:11:31.45 than the other one that was slower. 00:11:31.45\00:11:32.25 - Yeah, yeah, we had to see, 00:11:32.25\00:11:35.02 you go through really fast. 00:11:35.02\00:11:36.49 Got to see everything. 00:11:36.49\00:11:37.83 - Oh, yeah, going through the village just like seeing, 00:11:37.83\00:11:40.60 like, you could see their homes just right there, 00:11:40.60\00:11:42.76 their porches right above the water and like. 00:11:42.76\00:11:45.07 - Yeah, like that's where they live. 00:11:45.07\00:11:46.90 - That's their whole life, yeah 00:11:46.90\00:11:48.44 - Yeah. 00:11:48.44\00:11:49.90 When going through the market, we also got to stop 00:11:49.90\00:11:50.74 and hold a slow loris, 00:11:50.74\00:11:52.57 which I'd never even seen one before. 00:11:52.57\00:11:54.51 - Neither had I. 00:11:54.51\00:11:55.58 - So, that was really fun. 00:11:55.58\00:11:56.95 - Yeah. 00:11:56.95\00:11:57.91 - So, what is this doing here? 00:11:57.91\00:11:59.21 - Well, during our ride through the market- 00:11:59.21\00:12:02.15 - Mm-hmm. 00:12:02.15\00:12:03.15 - We got a picture taken of us, 00:12:03.15\00:12:05.35 and then they put it on this plate 00:12:05.35\00:12:07.56 and when we were finished, they sold it to us. 00:12:07.56\00:12:10.53 - [Mary Ann] It's a cool, little souvenir. 00:12:10.53\00:12:11.86 Reminder of our awesome time at the floating market. 00:12:11.86\00:12:14.13 - Yeah. 00:12:14.13\00:12:15.26 - Earlier, we were talking about how 00:12:15.26\00:12:16.43 this is real life for people, 00:12:16.43\00:12:18.23 but it kind of just looks like a tourist trap. 00:12:18.23\00:12:21.04 Like, where'd it even come from? 00:12:21.04\00:12:23.04 - Hundreds of years ago, 00:12:23.04\00:12:24.91 the floating market was the only way that people had 00:12:24.91\00:12:27.91 to buy things and get what they needed. 00:12:27.91\00:12:29.78 - Mm-hmm. 00:12:29.78\00:12:30.88 - Because they didn't have a road system. 00:12:30.88\00:12:32.08 They just had canals, 00:12:32.08\00:12:33.92 and that's how they traveled and got around. 00:12:33.92\00:12:36.95 - Wow. 00:12:36.95\00:12:38.02 - Yeah, and Bangkok itself is actually built 00:12:38.02\00:12:40.42 on a swampy area near a river that goes through the city. 00:12:40.42\00:12:44.46 - Oh, okay. 00:12:44.46\00:12:45.53 - And actually sinks some every year. 00:12:45.53\00:12:48.23 - Really? 00:12:48.23\00:12:49.06 - Yeah. 00:12:49.06\00:12:50.33 - Wow, Bangkok is such a huge city though. 00:12:50.33\00:12:51.60 - It is. 00:12:51.60\00:12:53.07 - It's like 13 million people that live there, right? 00:12:53.07\00:12:54.87 - That's what I've heard, yeah. 00:12:54.87\00:12:56.30 - My dad did some calculations 00:12:56.30\00:12:57.77 and there are about 1200 Adventists that live in the city 00:12:57.77\00:13:00.84 and if every Adventist talked to just one person a day, 00:13:00.84\00:13:04.05 it would take 30 years for them to talk to everybody. 00:13:04.05\00:13:07.42 - Wow, that's a long time. 00:13:07.42\00:13:09.48 - It's really daunting. 00:13:09.48\00:13:10.62 There's a lot of work that needs to be done. 00:13:10.62\00:13:12.22 - There is. 00:13:12.22\00:13:13.25 Earlier, we mentioned that we would be 00:13:13.25\00:13:15.02 talking to a mystery missionary. 00:13:15.02\00:13:17.69 We can't tell you her real name 00:13:17.69\00:13:19.43 because she works in a closed country. 00:13:19.43\00:13:21.23 And if the wrong people found out, 00:13:21.23\00:13:23.20 she could get into a lot of trouble. 00:13:23.20\00:13:24.80 We ended up meeting her by accident when we were in 00:13:24.80\00:13:28.30 Bangkok. We actually weren't even planning on interviewing 00:13:28.30\00:13:31.01 her. God just worked it out for her to be in Bangkok 00:13:31.01\00:13:33.31 the same time we were there. 00:13:33.31\00:13:34.14 - Mm-hmm. 00:13:34.14\00:13:35.48 - And I think it's a good thing that we interviewed her. 00:13:35.48\00:13:36.75 - It was. 00:13:36.75\00:13:37.58 I was really inspired 00:13:37.58\00:13:38.61 and I know the viewers will be as well. 00:13:38.61\00:13:40.08 - Yeah. 00:13:40.08\00:13:40.88 - So, it's a little long, 00:13:40.88\00:13:41.95 but we think you'll really enjoy it. 00:13:41.95\00:13:44.42 (calm music) 00:13:44.42\00:13:46.89 - We're here in the middle of Bangkok. 00:14:01.30\00:14:03.81 We're on the roof of our guest house that we're staying in, 00:14:03.81\00:14:06.98 and you can see a pretty good view from here. 00:14:06.98\00:14:10.51 You can hear all the noise 00:14:10.51\00:14:11.85 because there's a construction site right next door to us 00:14:11.85\00:14:14.28 and it's gonna be pretty loud, 00:14:14.28\00:14:16.25 but we're gonna try to make it work. 00:14:16.25\00:14:18.19 So, we're gonna be interviewing Elizabeth. 00:14:18.19\00:14:20.56 She's a missionary and we're really excited 00:14:20.56\00:14:22.92 to get to hear more about what she does. 00:14:22.92\00:14:25.03 - So, our first question to Elizabeth is: 00:14:25.03\00:14:26.76 Where do you work? 00:14:26.76\00:14:28.36 - I work in Asia in a tribal area near a village. 00:14:28.36\00:14:32.67 I came here because this is where 00:14:32.67\00:14:35.24 I really felt God leading me. 00:14:35.24\00:14:37.21 And I currently work as a nurse in a clinic 00:14:37.21\00:14:39.87 and I also help train students 00:14:39.87\00:14:42.24 to become medical missionaries 00:14:42.24\00:14:43.78 and they learn about natural remedies 00:14:43.78\00:14:45.98 so they can work in their home villages 00:14:45.98\00:14:48.02 where medical treatment and doctors and hospitals 00:14:48.02\00:14:50.82 are not available. 00:14:50.82\00:14:52.15 - Why are you doing all this? 00:14:52.15\00:14:54.56 - [Elizabeth] I'm doing this because in high school, 00:14:54.56\00:14:57.46 I really felt God impressing me to become a nurse 00:14:57.46\00:15:01.30 and I felt like he was telling me to become a nurse 00:15:01.30\00:15:05.33 because he knew he wanted me to do medical mission work. 00:15:05.33\00:15:09.14 So, ever since high school, and all through nursing school, 00:15:09.14\00:15:11.64 I knew that I wanted to become a medical missionary. 00:15:11.64\00:15:14.18 And so, now I'm able to use what God has given me, 00:15:14.18\00:15:17.75 what God has taught me, in his service. 00:15:17.75\00:15:20.85 - That's very inspiring. 00:15:20.85\00:15:22.65 - That's great that you were in tune with God 00:15:22.65\00:15:25.82 through high school and stuff, 00:15:25.82\00:15:27.72 and know like, what you felt like what your calling was. 00:15:27.72\00:15:32.79 - So, there was a lot of prayer 00:15:33.60\00:15:35.03 and it took me about a year 00:15:35.03\00:15:38.00 to really listen to God's voice to come here. 00:15:38.00\00:15:41.17 So, I argued with God a little bit 00:15:41.17\00:15:43.27 and all of my reasons for staying in the United States- 00:15:43.27\00:15:48.14 God gave me an answer, 00:15:48.14\00:15:49.98 and so it's like all my excuses for staying, 00:15:49.98\00:15:53.52 God completely erased all of them. 00:15:53.52\00:15:56.42 - What could, like people that are watching, 00:15:56.42\00:15:58.79 and Mary Ann and I, what could we do to help 00:15:58.79\00:16:01.72 with the project you're working with? 00:16:01.72\00:16:04.26 - Definitely prayer, 00:16:04.26\00:16:05.63 because anyone, anywhere, at any time, can always pray 00:16:05.63\00:16:08.50 no matter the situation, no matter how far away you are, 00:16:08.50\00:16:11.33 you can always, always pray 00:16:11.33\00:16:12.47 and that can make a huge difference. 00:16:12.47\00:16:14.64 And also, be prepared to go wherever God leads you. 00:16:14.64\00:16:18.31 Learn as much as you can 00:16:18.31\00:16:20.14 in as many different areas as you can. 00:16:20.14\00:16:22.61 Learn as many different skills as you can. 00:16:22.61\00:16:24.75 Learn electrical work. 00:16:24.75\00:16:26.61 Learn how to make a charcoal poultice. 00:16:26.61\00:16:29.75 Learn how to give a hot foot bath. 00:16:29.75\00:16:32.39 Lots of simple things you can learn at home 00:16:32.39\00:16:34.79 that you can use in the mission field overseas 00:16:34.79\00:16:37.63 and you can also use these things in the mission field 00:16:37.63\00:16:39.83 in your home country. 00:16:39.83\00:16:41.63 - And that's great. 00:16:43.06\00:16:44.40 - I think it's really neat how, like even younger people 00:16:44.40\00:16:47.74 like, can still do stuff even if they're not overseas 00:16:47.74\00:16:51.34 and it's something definitely everyone should consider. 00:16:51.34\00:16:55.68 Definitely prayer especially is very important. 00:16:55.68\00:16:59.48 - In preparing them for- 00:16:59.48\00:17:01.02 - Yes. 00:17:01.02\00:17:02.38 Something that they might be able to do when they're older. 00:17:02.38\00:17:03.92 - Yes, absolutely, and that's very important 00:17:03.92\00:17:07.22 because sometimes, we think we're young 00:17:07.22\00:17:09.76 and there's nothing that we can do now 00:17:09.76\00:17:11.69 and sometimes people think they're too old 00:17:11.69\00:17:14.40 and there's nothing they can do, 00:17:14.40\00:17:15.40 but they can always pray. 00:17:15.40\00:17:16.73 And even though someone may think they're too young 00:17:16.73\00:17:19.27 to do something now, 00:17:19.27\00:17:20.60 they still are in the process of being prepared 00:17:20.60\00:17:23.97 for what God wants to use them for in the future. 00:17:23.97\00:17:27.21 And sometimes, God teaches us lessons or we take a class 00:17:27.21\00:17:31.55 or we have an experience 00:17:31.55\00:17:32.85 and we don't know why this happened. 00:17:32.85\00:17:35.58 It doesn't make any sense. 00:17:35.58\00:17:36.95 It doesn't fit with anything else in the rest of our life, 00:17:36.95\00:17:39.02 but God has a reason for it, 00:17:39.02\00:17:42.19 and so then, one day, it hits! 00:17:42.19\00:17:44.09 (gasps) God, you're so smart! 00:17:44.09\00:17:46.23 This is why you had me learn that. 00:17:46.23\00:17:47.66 This is why you had me in this situation. 00:17:47.66\00:17:50.10 And then it makes sense and you understand 00:17:50.10\00:17:52.07 God really does have a plan. 00:17:52.07\00:17:54.84 And you can really claim the promises of Jeremiah 29:11. 00:17:56.24\00:18:00.11 Where God says, "I know the plans that I have for you. 00:18:01.48\00:18:04.05 Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, 00:18:04.05\00:18:06.58 plans to give you a hope and an expected end." 00:18:06.58\00:18:09.82 So, even though, we don't know what he wants 00:18:09.82\00:18:11.35 to do with us in the future, 00:18:11.35\00:18:12.42 we can still learn as much as we can now 00:18:12.42\00:18:14.36 so that wherever he calls us, 00:18:14.36\00:18:16.93 we can do as much as we can wherever we go. 00:18:16.93\00:18:19.43 - So what is life like for kids over there? 00:18:19.43\00:18:22.13 Like what are some of the differences 00:18:22.13\00:18:23.70 between, like, our life and their life? 00:18:23.70\00:18:26.30 - [Elizabeth] Hmm, There are huge differences. 00:18:26.30\00:18:29.20 For starters, the children do not have the same nurturing 00:18:29.20\00:18:33.44 that most of the children in the US have 00:18:33.44\00:18:36.95 because parents in the US 00:18:36.95\00:18:38.31 usually are very excited and happy to have children 00:18:38.31\00:18:41.32 and people overseas where I work, 00:18:41.32\00:18:43.75 sometimes they're not as excited to have children 00:18:43.75\00:18:46.29 because they think this is another person 00:18:46.29\00:18:48.82 that I have to feed, 00:18:48.82\00:18:49.96 another person that I have to take care of. 00:18:49.96\00:18:51.96 And the children are almost seen as a burden or a curse 00:18:51.96\00:18:55.53 instead of a blessing. 00:18:55.53\00:18:57.73 And so, sometimes the children, 00:18:57.73\00:18:59.57 they don't get the love and the affection 00:18:59.57\00:19:01.37 that they really need, 00:19:01.37\00:19:03.10 and sometimes, they disappear for a couple of days 00:19:03.10\00:19:06.41 and you'll ask the parents, "Where are your children?", 00:19:06.41\00:19:08.51 and they say, "We don't know. 00:19:08.51\00:19:10.21 He left a couple days ago. 00:19:10.21\00:19:12.11 He'll come back in a day or two." 00:19:12.11\00:19:14.35 And, and then also, the parents 00:19:14.35\00:19:17.52 don't always teach their children 00:19:17.52\00:19:19.45 the differences between right and wrong. 00:19:19.45\00:19:21.29 They just let them do whatever they want, 00:19:21.29\00:19:23.43 and then if they make a mistake and they get hurt, 00:19:23.43\00:19:26.90 the parents think, oh that's your own fault 00:19:26.90\00:19:28.30 because you made the mistake. 00:19:28.30\00:19:29.90 But the parents never taught them how to make wise decisions 00:19:29.90\00:19:33.90 and to avoid these mistakes. 00:19:33.90\00:19:36.44 - That's really sad. 00:19:38.04\00:19:40.18 - So, a lot of people think that 00:19:40.18\00:19:42.84 when you go to the mission field, 00:19:42.84\00:19:45.68 you're saving lives everyday 00:19:45.68\00:19:47.75 and you're bandaging machete wounds 00:19:47.75\00:19:50.22 and you're delivering babies 00:19:50.22\00:19:52.12 and you're surviving storms 00:19:52.12\00:19:55.12 but a lot of what happens in the mission field 00:19:55.12\00:19:57.33 is routine daily things. 00:19:57.33\00:19:59.03 You're washing your laundry by hand. 00:19:59.03\00:20:00.56 You're cooking your food over a fire. 00:20:00.56\00:20:02.56 In the midst of all of these things, 00:20:02.56\00:20:04.17 you're witnessing for God. 00:20:04.17\00:20:05.20 When you go and interact in the communities 00:20:05.20\00:20:07.04 and when you are even just doing your laundry 00:20:07.04\00:20:10.67 because we're supposed to do, everything that we do, 00:20:10.67\00:20:12.67 we're supposed to do it to the glory of God. 00:20:12.67\00:20:14.58 So, there are simple things that seem mundane and routine, 00:20:14.58\00:20:18.38 but we still have to do those things to the glory of God. 00:20:18.38\00:20:21.78 And sometimes, people also think 00:20:21.78\00:20:24.15 that they have to be a doctor to go to the mission field, 00:20:24.15\00:20:26.62 or they have to be a pastor to preach, 00:20:26.62\00:20:29.32 but that's not true at all. 00:20:29.32\00:20:30.89 And there are even things that you girls know 00:20:30.89\00:20:32.83 that people in the villages may not know. 00:20:32.83\00:20:34.96 So for example, you know you should wash your hands 00:20:34.96\00:20:37.77 after using the restroom, 00:20:37.77\00:20:39.23 and you should wash your hands before you prepare food. 00:20:39.23\00:20:42.30 You should wash your hands before you eat. 00:20:42.30\00:20:44.61 You should take a bath every day so you can be clean. 00:20:44.61\00:20:47.71 You should brush your teeth 00:20:47.71\00:20:48.98 so your teeth don't rot and fall out. 00:20:48.98\00:20:50.45 But many people in the villages, they don't know this, 00:20:50.45\00:20:53.65 So there's so much that you could teach even adults 00:20:53.65\00:20:56.48 that are two or three times your age. 00:20:56.48\00:20:58.85 - Wow. 00:20:58.85\00:21:00.16 - So there's a lot that you already know 00:21:00.16\00:21:01.22 that you could teach. 00:21:01.22\00:21:03.12 - I guess you take for granted 00:21:03.12\00:21:04.23 that everybody just knows that stuff. 00:21:04.23\00:21:07.03 - It's true. 00:21:07.03\00:21:08.10 It's really true. 00:21:08.10\00:21:09.06 And that's one of the things 00:21:09.06\00:21:10.87 that's so different about the culture is that 00:21:10.87\00:21:13.60 they don't even know how to wash their hands 00:21:13.60\00:21:16.87 with soap and water. 00:21:16.87\00:21:17.94 They may have never used soap in their life, 00:21:17.94\00:21:20.71 and then they get lots of diseases. 00:21:20.71\00:21:22.48 They get sick because they're not cleaning their hands, 00:21:22.48\00:21:26.01 they're not washing their fruits before they eat them. 00:21:26.01\00:21:29.08 And so, if you can just teach people simple education 00:21:29.08\00:21:32.95 of how to prepare food in a clean way, 00:21:32.95\00:21:35.76 how to have a clean body, 00:21:35.76\00:21:37.79 then you can actually save lives just by washing hands 00:21:37.79\00:21:41.46 and teaching them to wash their hands. 00:21:41.46\00:21:43.93 - Wow. 00:21:45.40\00:21:46.67 - So, you can make a big difference 00:21:46.67\00:21:48.30 with what you already have and what you already know. 00:21:48.30\00:21:51.64 - I think that's really inspiring, 00:21:51.64\00:21:53.17 like for people who don't have lots of talents maybe, 00:21:53.17\00:21:55.88 like there's special people 00:21:55.88\00:21:58.25 that aren't very special people, maybe. 00:21:58.25\00:22:00.62 - [Elizabeth] Mm-hmm. 00:22:00.62\00:22:01.72 - 'Cause like even the simple stuff 00:22:01.72\00:22:02.98 can make such a big difference. 00:22:02.98\00:22:04.52 - Yes, exactly, and there's a saying I really like 00:22:04.52\00:22:07.49 and it says, "God does not call the qualified. 00:22:07.49\00:22:12.43 He qualifies the called.", 00:22:12.43\00:22:14.60 so he can call us to do something and we think, 00:22:14.60\00:22:16.87 "God, what am I gonna do?" 00:22:16.87\00:22:17.97 And then once we get there, we realize, 00:22:17.97\00:22:20.60 "Oh, this is what you want me to do." 00:22:20.60\00:22:22.50 and God can give you the training that you need. 00:22:22.50\00:22:26.11 - It sounds like there's a lot of 00:22:26.11\00:22:27.78 challenges and difficulties maybe, 00:22:27.78\00:22:29.94 but what really keeps you here? 00:22:29.94\00:22:32.38 - What keeps me here is, 00:22:32.38\00:22:34.35 definitely, I know that this is God's will for my life 00:22:34.35\00:22:38.19 beyond a shadow of a doubt. 00:22:38.19\00:22:40.32 And even though I haven't been here very long, 00:22:40.32\00:22:42.69 I've completely fallen in love with the culture 00:22:42.69\00:22:45.43 and the people and the food and the work that I do 00:22:45.43\00:22:49.60 and the people have really become like my family 00:22:49.60\00:22:53.00 and the place has become like my home. 00:22:53.00\00:22:55.37 So, when I talk about going back to the states to visit, 00:22:55.37\00:22:59.21 instead of saying, "I'm going back home.", 00:22:59.21\00:23:01.64 I say, "I'm going to the states." 00:23:01.64\00:23:03.31 because I think of this as my home now. 00:23:03.31\00:23:06.41 It's not like I'm just here for a job. 00:23:06.41\00:23:10.25 I'm here fully, completely dedicated 00:23:10.25\00:23:13.29 to wherever God leads while I'm here. 00:23:13.29\00:23:15.12 - I feel like that should always be 00:23:15.12\00:23:17.36 like, if you're gonna be a missionary, 00:23:17.36\00:23:19.29 you should always be sure 00:23:19.29\00:23:21.23 that that's where God's leading you 00:23:21.23\00:23:22.03 and you should always, like, 00:23:22.03\00:23:23.77 don't just do it for a job or something. 00:23:23.77\00:23:27.14 You should always be, like, dedicated 00:23:27.14\00:23:28.74 and want to actually make a difference. 00:23:28.74\00:23:31.24 - Yes. 00:23:31.24\00:23:32.07 - To have that passion. 00:23:32.07\00:23:32.91 - Yes, absolutely. 00:23:32.91\00:23:34.38 Even if we're doing something we may not enjoy, 00:23:34.38\00:23:38.05 we can still pray and ask God to help us enjoy that. 00:23:38.05\00:23:41.62 So, we may think, ugh, I'm cleaning the bathroom. 00:23:41.62\00:23:43.85 This is no fun. 00:23:43.85\00:23:45.39 But it can be a blessing. 00:23:45.39\00:23:47.39 And one good friend of mine, 00:23:47.39\00:23:49.22 we both do not like washing our laundry by hand 00:23:49.22\00:23:52.73 because it takes so much time 00:23:52.73\00:23:53.76 and we feel like there's nothing we can do. 00:23:53.76\00:23:55.83 We're just wasting all this time. 00:23:55.83\00:23:58.03 But we both realized, we can listen to sermons 00:23:58.03\00:24:00.87 while we're doing our laundry. 00:24:00.87\00:24:03.04 So now, it's like, "Hey, I'm gonna go do my laundry today." 00:24:03.04\00:24:06.88 I'm really excited because now I have time 00:24:06.88\00:24:08.98 to listen to this sermon I've really been wanting 00:24:08.98\00:24:10.81 to listen to, 00:24:10.81\00:24:11.95 or to call a family member and talk to, 00:24:11.95\00:24:13.88 or a friend 00:24:13.88\00:24:15.28 that we haven't been able to talk to in a long time. 00:24:15.28\00:24:16.92 So now, we actually look forward to our laundry time 00:24:16.92\00:24:19.45 because we know it's a time 00:24:19.45\00:24:20.56 that we're not gonna be distracted by anything 00:24:20.56\00:24:22.22 because our hands are in a bucket of soapy water. 00:24:22.22\00:24:25.63 So, we can just talk on the phone 00:24:25.63\00:24:27.00 or we can listen to a sermon or a Bible story or something. 00:24:27.00\00:24:30.20 So, even something we hated doing, 00:24:30.20\00:24:32.43 God has now turned that into a blessing for us. 00:24:32.43\00:24:34.97 (booms) 00:24:34.97\00:24:36.44 - It's so amazing how God 00:24:36.44\00:24:37.71 can change our point of view of something. 00:24:37.71\00:24:41.18 A big question that I have, 00:24:41.18\00:24:42.64 and I'm sure people at home that are watching, 00:24:42.64\00:24:44.95 they're very interested to know is Jesus worth it? 00:24:44.95\00:24:47.92 Is being a missionary, is the struggles of the hardships, 00:24:47.92\00:24:52.99 Is it all going to be worth it? 00:24:53.79\00:24:54.92 - [Elizabeth] Absolutely. 00:24:55.89\00:24:56.96 That's a great question. 00:24:56.96\00:24:58.53 And for me, the answer is yes, beyond a shadow of a doubt. 00:24:58.53\00:25:03.13 Because I know that no matter what happens in this life, 00:25:03.13\00:25:07.00 no matter what I do in this life, 00:25:07.00\00:25:09.04 what really matters is eternity, 00:25:09.04\00:25:12.21 so, what am I doing now to prepare myself for eternity? 00:25:12.21\00:25:16.38 And what am I doing now to help prepare others for eternity? 00:25:16.38\00:25:21.45 If we know that we have served him completely, 00:25:22.55\00:25:24.32 then he will take care of us 00:25:24.32\00:25:26.22 and he will provide all of our needs. 00:25:26.22\00:25:28.66 - This is, you've really inspired me. 00:25:29.96\00:25:31.66 I really have enjoyed getting to know about what you do 00:25:31.66\00:25:34.83 and what your life is like and God bless. 00:25:34.83\00:25:38.67 - Praise God! 00:25:38.67\00:25:39.73 Thank you, God bless both of you. 00:25:39.73\00:25:40.27 - Thank you. 00:25:40.27\00:25:41.97 (calm music) 00:25:41.97\00:25:44.44 - Just watching that again re-inspires me. 00:25:51.28\00:25:54.42 - Me too. 00:25:54.42\00:25:55.52 - We had so much fun hanging out with her. 00:25:55.52\00:25:57.35 - Yeah. 00:25:57.35\00:25:58.35 - Like, she's so energetic and passionate 00:25:58.35\00:25:59.62 about what she does. 00:25:59.62\00:26:00.69 - I think a lot of times, 00:26:00.69\00:26:01.79 people think that being a Christian means that 00:26:01.79\00:26:04.43 you have to be sad and serious. 00:26:04.43\00:26:07.50 But no, when you're really surrendered to Jesus 00:26:07.50\00:26:09.76 and living in him, then it's joyful. 00:26:09.76\00:26:13.07 - It is, and she's a great example of that. 00:26:13.07\00:26:15.24 - Mm-hmm. 00:26:15.24\00:26:16.34 - I really like how from a young age, 00:26:16.34\00:26:17.47 she was surrendered to God about her future. 00:26:17.47\00:26:20.11 - Mm-hmm. 00:26:20.11\00:26:20.91 - And open to his leading. 00:26:20.91\00:26:22.71 - Yeah, and her surrender really inspires me too. 00:26:22.71\00:26:25.28 And surrender isn't just like, okay, I'm gonna die now. 00:26:25.28\00:26:28.45 - Yeah. 00:26:28.45\00:26:29.78 - It's more like, I'm okay if you want me to die. 00:26:29.78\00:26:33.72 - Mm-hmm, exactly. 00:26:33.72\00:26:35.12 - That allows God's plan to work 00:26:35.12\00:26:37.49 and he's much better at planning than we are. 00:26:37.49\00:26:39.63 - He is. 00:26:39.63\00:26:41.00 An example of that is how Elizabeth was so prepared 00:26:41.00\00:26:43.70 to just be over there and living in a mud hut 00:26:43.70\00:26:46.74 with the bare necessities. 00:26:46.74\00:26:48.04 - Mm-hmm. 00:26:48.04\00:26:48.84 - But then, when she got there, 00:26:48.84\00:26:49.97 God had provided a nice room for her 00:26:49.97\00:26:51.31 that was way better than she had been preparing for. 00:26:51.31\00:26:55.38 - Yeah, and that doesn't always happen. 00:26:55.38\00:26:57.05 - Exactly. 00:26:57.05\00:26:58.15 - Like, sometimes you surrender for bad things 00:26:58.15\00:27:00.12 and the bad things still happen. 00:27:00.12\00:27:02.18 But, it's just when you allow God to lead 00:27:02.18\00:27:04.82 that we'll be happy. 00:27:04.82\00:27:05.89 - And Elizabeth didn't have it easy. 00:27:05.89\00:27:07.62 She had obstacles to overcome 00:27:07.62\00:27:09.42 after she felt God leading her overseas. 00:27:09.42\00:27:11.86 - Mm-hmm. 00:27:11.86\00:27:12.89 - [Lilyann] God helped her to step out 00:27:12.89\00:27:14.00 of the typical American life that we live here 00:27:14.00\00:27:16.50 and overcome people's expectations of you 00:27:16.50\00:27:21.20 as you grow up. 00:27:21.20\00:27:22.34 You know, go to college, get a job, get married. 00:27:22.34\00:27:24.21 You know, all that stuff, and just stay here. 00:27:24.21\00:27:27.14 And there's so much work to do outside of here. 00:27:27.14\00:27:29.94 - Yeah, for sure. 00:27:29.94\00:27:31.58 And we just wanted to remind you guys not to be held back 00:27:31.58\00:27:34.52 by what other people think of you 00:27:34.52\00:27:36.45 and not to put others' expectations 00:27:36.45\00:27:38.69 above what God's plans for you are. 00:27:38.69\00:27:40.82 - 'Cause his way is always better in the long run. 00:27:40.82\00:27:43.39 Join us next week on Mission Trek 00:27:43.39\00:27:45.63 as we travel to Northern Thailand. 00:27:45.63\00:27:47.73 - And until then, remember to pray for the unreached. 00:27:47.73\00:27:50.70 (inspiring music) 00:27:50.70\00:27:53.60
