Welcome back to our study of the resurrection of our Lord 00:00:01.40\00:00:04.97 and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:00:05.00\00:00:06.48 Ranko, this was such a vital historical event 00:00:06.51\00:00:11.19 central to the New Testament. 00:00:11.24\00:00:14.32 Glenn, when we are talking about the resurrection of Jesus, 00:00:14.35\00:00:18.62 we are talking about one of the legends. 00:00:18.65\00:00:21.75 The product of the imagination of a certain group of people. 00:00:22.57\00:00:27.39 Today we have a problem. 00:00:27.42\00:00:32.26 People who are even educated who doubt that the miraculous 00:00:32.29\00:00:38.93 resurrection can even happen. 00:00:38.96\00:00:40.56 The consequence is Jesus did not resurrect. 00:00:40.59\00:00:44.83 However, the early disciples, and the followers of Jesus 00:00:44.86\00:00:50.93 did not have any problem with that. Yeah! Why? 00:00:50.96\00:00:53.63 Actually, I would like, Glenn, that we go to one of the 00:00:54.65\00:00:57.59 Biblical texts. It's not in the gospel of Matthew. 00:00:58.36\00:00:59.74 It's about the apostle Paul. 00:00:59.77\00:01:02.74 The apostle Paul, you know, was not a follower of Jesus. 00:01:02.77\00:01:06.01 He was not among those early, early disciples. 00:01:06.04\00:01:08.82 He actually joined the group a little bit later. 00:01:08.85\00:01:11.78 But for Paul there was not any doubt that the crucified Jesus 00:01:11.81\00:01:16.56 whom he preached actually resurrected. 00:01:16.59\00:01:18.90 And let's see what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:1-8. 00:01:18.93\00:01:24.83 This is such a great passage because it combines 00:01:24.86\00:01:27.18 the importance and the reality. Yes, yes. 00:01:27.21\00:01:29.24 For I delivered to you as of first importance 00:01:30.25\00:01:33.90 what I also received,... 00:01:33.93\00:01:35.30 And now we find really the essence of New Testament 00:01:35.33\00:01:37.59 preaching. This is what the gospel is. 00:01:38.16\00:01:39.53 This is what it is. 00:01:39.56\00:01:40.93 ...that Christ died for our sins in accordance 00:01:40.96\00:01:42.50 with the scriptures; (first event), that He was buried, 00:01:42.53\00:01:45.80 (and thirdly), that He was raised on the third day 00:01:45.83\00:01:49.61 in accordance with the Scriptures, 00:01:49.64\00:01:51.16 and that He appeared to Cephas, and the twelve. 00:01:51.19\00:01:53.17 Glenn, sorry for interrupting you. 00:01:53.20\00:01:54.96 I just have to take a few moments. 00:01:54.99\00:01:56.93 I'm taking advantage of that. 00:01:56.96\00:01:59.53 What was the core of the early gospel 00:01:59.56\00:02:03.91 that the disciples preached? 00:02:03.94\00:02:05.32 Death, burial, and the resurrection of Jesus. 00:02:05.35\00:02:09.82 Please, I'd like to turn the attention of the viewers today. 00:02:09.85\00:02:12.42 What is the core today of the Christian's belief? 00:02:12.45\00:02:15.86 What is it that we talk the most and celebrate even 00:02:15.89\00:02:18.67 for several weeks? It's the birth of Jesus. 00:02:19.41\00:02:20.78 Christmas. 00:02:20.81\00:02:22.18 When Easter comes we just mention it one weekend, etc. 00:02:22.21\00:02:27.47 But we pay; somehow we reverse the meaning of that. 00:02:27.50\00:02:30.56 Of course, the birth of Jesus is important. 00:02:30.59\00:02:34.26 But actually it is the death of Jesus, and the resurrection 00:02:34.86\00:02:39.97 that provides the Christians with the hope that our future 00:02:40.00\00:02:44.71 is determined, that our future is settled with God, because He 00:02:44.74\00:02:50.66 paid the ransom for us on the cross of Calvary. 00:02:50.69\00:02:53.51 In the Scriptures those two events are tied together. 00:02:53.54\00:02:55.79 Those three events: the cross, the burial, the resurrection, 00:02:55.82\00:02:58.73 are all tired together. 00:02:58.76\00:03:00.13 So let's see how certain this is. 00:03:00.16\00:03:01.92 And that he appeared to Cephas, or Peter, then to the twelve, 00:03:01.95\00:03:05.24 then he appeared to more than five hundred brethren 00:03:05.27\00:03:07.38 at one time; most of whom are still alive,... 00:03:07.41\00:03:10.04 Witnesses: over five hundred. 00:03:10.07\00:03:12.58 ...though some have fallen asleep. 00:03:12.61\00:03:15.38 Then he appeared to James; then to all the apostles. 00:03:15.41\00:03:17.71 Last of all, as to one ultimately born, 00:03:17.74\00:03:20.61 he appeared also to me. 00:03:20.64\00:03:22.01 Why, why early Christians? 00:03:22.04\00:03:24.06 Why did the early Christians have any problem 00:03:24.09\00:03:26.06 with the resurrection of Jesus? 00:03:26.09\00:03:27.46 Come on, Glenn, you can have two or three people; 00:03:27.49\00:03:30.01 can they lie? Of course! Yeah. 00:03:30.04\00:03:31.90 You can even have five people and they can lie. 00:03:31.94\00:03:34.29 You can have ten people and they can bring something 00:03:34.32\00:03:38.01 that never happened. 00:03:38.05\00:03:39.59 But when you compare them you can be sure that they lied. 00:03:39.62\00:03:42.90 But if you have, he doesn't say five hundred...It's more than. 00:03:42.93\00:03:46.29 ...more than five hundred, plus twelve, plus a few others, 00:03:47.22\00:03:51.79 plus women... Yes. 00:03:51.83\00:03:54.98 ...believe me that testimony is trustworthy. 00:03:55.01\00:03:57.54 There's not any doubt that something like that happened. 00:03:57.57\00:04:00.88 And we'll see a great testimony is what they do about it. 00:04:00.91\00:04:03.65 It changes their lives completely. 00:04:03.68\00:04:05.20 It changes their lives! Now let's go back to Matthew. 00:04:05.23\00:04:08.25 So the Christian's faith is based on the firm foundation. 00:04:08.28\00:04:11.27 Our Lord really is risen. 00:04:11.54\00:04:14.45 And let's go back to Matthew Chapter 28. Please. 00:04:14.48\00:04:17.28 The women, who really couldn't in the court of law be 00:04:17.78\00:04:20.65 witnesses, so we need some men to come along 00:04:20.68\00:04:22.64 and help as witnesses. 00:04:22.67\00:04:24.52 So who are the first missionaries? The women. 00:04:24.55\00:04:26.04 In the gospel they were women of the gospel that Paul talks 00:04:27.19\00:04:29.63 about in 1 Corinthians in Chapter 15. 00:04:29.66\00:04:32.03 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy 00:04:32.06\00:04:35.15 and ran to tell his disciples. 00:04:35.18\00:04:36.61 Verse 9 of Matthew 28. 00:04:36.64\00:04:38.63 And behold Jesus met them and said, Hail. 00:04:38.66\00:04:40.87 And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshipped him. 00:04:40.90\00:04:44.74 Ranko, you've lost your parents. 00:04:44.77\00:04:46.82 I've lost my parents. 00:04:46.85\00:04:48.22 There's a cemetery in Berrien Springs where my mother 00:04:48.25\00:04:51.43 and father are buried. 00:04:51.47\00:04:53.38 The resurrection is not a doctrine; it's our hope. 00:04:53.41\00:04:55.53 It's a blessed hope, as Paul says in Thessalonians. 00:04:55.56\00:04:58.09 Can I say something else? You say it's hope. 00:04:58.12\00:04:59.49 I would just, Glenn, add one more element. 00:05:00.11\00:05:02.51 Resurrection is a personal experience. 00:05:02.54\00:05:05.26 If you have any doubt about the resurrection of Jesus; 00:05:05.29\00:05:08.51 that He is alive, please surrender your life to Him. 00:05:08.54\00:05:14.89 Establish a relationship with Him, and you will have strong 00:05:14.92\00:05:17.98 evidence that our Lord is still alive. 00:05:18.01\00:05:21.36 He is real. 00:05:21.39\00:05:23.41 His promise is real, and one day we will see Him at the 00:05:23.44\00:05:29.82 Second Coming of Christ. 00:05:29.85\00:05:31.22 You know you almost feel like breaking out into that 00:05:31.25\00:05:33.60 great gospel song, He Lives. He lives. 00:05:33.63\00:05:35.66 I serve a risen Savior. 00:05:36.10\00:05:37.56 That's what we're finding here in this wonderful story. 00:05:37.59\00:05:41.45 Jesus says, Don't be afraid. 00:05:41.48\00:05:44.74 They have worshipped Him; but there is something more. 00:05:44.77\00:05:47.88 The gospel isn't done. 00:05:47.91\00:05:49.28 We have a risen Savior. 00:05:49.31\00:05:50.93 And they're worshipping that risen Lord, 00:05:50.96\00:05:52.86 but there's something else that's left. 00:05:52.89\00:05:54.38 Ranko, they have a task. They have a purpose. 00:05:54.41\00:05:55.78 Actually for me, since I was a child, Verse 10 left an 00:05:56.83\00:06:03.09 impression on my mind. 00:06:03.12\00:06:04.49 Can you imagine, the disciples were sleeping 00:06:04.52\00:06:06.87 in the garden of Gethsemane. 00:06:06.90\00:06:08.27 When Jesus was arrested they fled away leaving Jesus. 00:06:08.30\00:06:11.68 Full of doubts; boy what a bunch! 00:06:11.71\00:06:16.03 Ha ha ha, just like us! 00:06:16.06\00:06:17.51 But listen, the first thing; this is the first message. 00:06:17.54\00:06:21.91 These are actually the first words of Jesus 00:06:21.94\00:06:24.02 after His resurrection. 00:06:24.05\00:06:25.42 He says, Do not be afraid. 00:06:25.45\00:06:28.03 Go and tell my disciples, my brethren, Jesus called them. 00:06:28.06\00:06:34.61 Remember we talked about "if your brother sins"; 00:06:34.64\00:06:37.94 what Jesus said. Go to Galilee. 00:06:38.83\00:06:41.07 I will meet you there. 00:06:41.10\00:06:43.96 He restores Peter. 00:06:45.07\00:06:46.44 He commissions the disciples. 00:06:46.47\00:06:48.40 What a loving Lord. 00:06:48.43\00:06:50.19 And then how does the gospel of Matthew end? 00:06:50.22\00:06:54.80 Would you read Verses 16-20? 00:06:54.83\00:06:57.08 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain 00:06:57.11\00:07:01.02 to which Jesus had directed them. 00:07:01.05\00:07:02.56 And when they saw him they worshipped him. 00:07:02.59\00:07:05.21 Again, they worshipped Him... 00:07:05.24\00:07:06.61 Worship always goes with the fact that Jesus resurrected. 00:07:06.64\00:07:10.31 Yes. ...but some doubted. 00:07:10.34\00:07:11.72 And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven 00:07:11.76\00:07:15.65 and on earth has been given to me. 00:07:15.68\00:07:17.77 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them 00:07:17.80\00:07:22.91 in the name of the Father, and of the Son, 00:07:22.94\00:07:25.24 and of the Holy Spirit: Teaching them to observe all that 00:07:25.27\00:07:28.25 I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, 00:07:28.28\00:07:31.86 to the end of the age. 00:07:31.89\00:07:33.42 What a promise! 00:07:33.45\00:07:36.03 This is according to the gospel of Matthew. 00:07:36.06\00:07:38.23 The last commission that Jesus gave to His disciples. 00:07:38.26\00:07:43.11 You know that I'm alive. 00:07:43.14\00:07:45.15 You know that I resurrected. 00:07:45.18\00:07:47.25 Take this message and proclaim to others; to whom? 00:07:47.28\00:07:52.20 to all nations. 00:07:52.23\00:07:54.26 Dear viewers, to all nations; to all people on the earth; 00:07:54.29\00:07:58.49 you and me included. 00:07:58.52\00:07:59.93 The promise is both spatial and temporal. 00:07:59.96\00:08:03.07 It's to all the earth, and it's through all time. What more. 00:08:03.10\00:08:07.36 So, go to preach to all people, including me. Yes. 00:08:07.39\00:08:09.88 But when that message reaches my heart where am I supposed to go? 00:08:09.92\00:08:14.35 Now the great commission implies to me; let me now go 00:08:14.38\00:08:17.55 and proclaim that gospel that Jesus died, He resurrected, 00:08:17.58\00:08:23.16 He ascended there to the heavenly places. 00:08:23.19\00:08:26.84 Yes. 00:08:27.86\00:08:29.23 And His presence is with us always. 00:08:29.26\00:08:32.70 How long all of this? 00:08:32.73\00:08:34.10 Until the very end of the age. 00:08:34.13\00:08:35.88 We believe that we live at the end of the age. 00:08:35.91\00:08:40.94 So His promise is still valid and of concern 00:08:40.97\00:08:43.83 to each one of us. 00:08:43.86\00:08:45.51 We're to become disciples and then go and make disciples... 00:08:45.54\00:08:48.97 Yes. of the one that we're following: Jesus our Savior. 00:08:49.49\00:08:52.21 Now Ranko, we've taken quite a journey here, and we've only 00:08:52.24\00:08:56.32 touched a few things. 00:08:56.35\00:08:57.72 We certainly can't feel that all of the gospel of Matthew 00:08:57.75\00:09:02.46 has been explored. 00:09:02.49\00:09:03.86 What should we think about now as we come to these last verses? 00:09:03.89\00:09:08.75 What should be next? 00:09:08.78\00:09:10.53 We should continue to study. 00:09:10.56\00:09:11.93 We should continue to pray. 00:09:11.96\00:09:13.50 Friends, when we reflect on what we have covered so far 00:09:13.53\00:09:18.89 from the gospel of Matthew, there is one thing 00:09:18.92\00:09:20.91 that we understand. 00:09:20.95\00:09:22.43 Jesus came to save His people from their sins. 00:09:22.46\00:09:25.14 He died for us. 00:09:25.17\00:09:26.54 And He is offering to us that great salvation, 00:09:26.57\00:09:30.16 and that salvation, what Jesus did for us, is understandable, 00:09:30.19\00:09:35.11 expensive, very expensive. 00:09:35.14\00:09:37.65 It cost the death of the Son of God. 00:09:37.68\00:09:40.38 But at the same time it is free. 00:09:40.41\00:09:42.95 It's not cheap; it's very expensive. 00:09:42.98\00:09:44.95 But it is freely offered to us. 00:09:44.98\00:09:48.52 As we went through the gospel of Matthew we could just touch 00:09:48.55\00:09:54.14 here and there some texts. 00:09:54.17\00:09:56.07 We could not cover all the Biblical texts. 00:09:56.10\00:10:00.28 And the purpose of this series was not to instruct us, 00:10:00.31\00:10:03.81 and to tell us everything, that we can know about Jesus 00:10:03.84\00:10:07.26 from the gospel of Matthew. 00:10:07.29\00:10:08.68 It's simply to stimulate us; to move us for further study. 00:10:08.71\00:10:12.70 Am I correct, Glenn? 00:10:12.73\00:10:14.77 We've really been just on the edges of an ocean of truth. Yes. 00:10:14.80\00:10:18.39 And we're humbled by this experience. 00:10:18.87\00:10:21.06 I want to encourage you, viewer. 00:10:21.09\00:10:22.84 Spend some time in God's Word; dig deeper. 00:10:22.87\00:10:25.53 That's the whole purpose of this Books of the Book series; 00:10:25.56\00:10:28.75 to have us go deeper into God's Word. 00:10:28.78\00:10:30.73 There's so much more to explore. 00:10:30.76\00:10:32.73 But, Ranko, if I may, we talked about the close of the age. 00:10:32.76\00:10:38.08 Now Matthew doesn't go into that close of the age, 00:10:38.11\00:10:41.15 but we've got to go to Revelation for a little bit. 00:10:41.18\00:10:44.62 How does this story end? 00:10:44.65\00:10:47.36 You see, during this series we try to have a glimpse 00:10:47.39\00:10:51.79 into the face of Jesus. 00:10:51.82\00:10:54.69 I wonder how the disciples felt, you know, watching that 00:10:54.72\00:10:58.97 face of Jesus from day to day, from day to day. 00:10:59.00\00:11:02.75 There is one special song that I cherish. 00:11:02.78\00:11:06.66 I like to listen to that song. 00:11:06.69\00:11:08.21 I was not there in that multitude watching people 00:11:08.24\00:11:13.49 ascending there to the heavenly places. 00:11:13.52\00:11:15.71 I wonder how the disciples felt when Jesus was ascending there 00:11:15.74\00:11:19.04 to the heavenly places. 00:11:19.07\00:11:20.44 But certainly I want to be in that multitude who see Jesus 00:11:20.47\00:11:27.53 when He comes down from heaven for the second time. 00:11:27.56\00:11:32.00 As you mentioned in the book of Revelation, in Chapter 21 00:11:32.03\00:11:35.61 and in Chapter 22, we read that one day we will have that great 00:11:35.64\00:11:41.28 opportunity and privilege to watch and to see the face of 00:11:41.31\00:11:45.91 Jesus and to watch that face through all eternity. 00:11:45.94\00:11:48.31 What a privilege! 00:11:48.34\00:11:49.91 I want to be sure to be there. 00:11:49.94\00:11:52.00 There's nothing in this world that would make me want to 00:11:52.03\00:11:56.49 miss that experience of seeing my Savior face to face. 00:11:56.52\00:12:00.03 And, Glenn, we will not have a need of the gospel of Matthew, 00:12:00.06\00:12:06.01 or Luke, or Mark, or John any longer. 00:12:06.04\00:12:09.67 We don't need that any longer because we will see Him 00:12:09.70\00:12:13.24 face to face. 00:12:13.27\00:12:14.64 We've been looking, as Paul says, through the glass darkly. 00:12:14.67\00:12:19.46 But there will come a day when that, the sickness, the disease, 00:12:19.49\00:12:26.43 all those things that Revelation 21 and 22 talks about; 00:12:26.46\00:12:29.47 it'll be a new day, a new world, but the same Savior. 00:12:29.50\00:12:33.84 We see here how the Holy Spirit used one person who had a very, 00:12:33.87\00:12:39.77 very problematic past: a tax collector 00:12:39.80\00:12:41.69 by the name of Matthew. 00:12:41.72\00:12:43.27 He used his talents, inspired him, motivated him, to write 00:12:43.30\00:12:49.08 that account of the life of Jesus. 00:12:49.11\00:12:51.35 Please take this gospel and study for yourself to get much 00:12:51.38\00:12:56.83 deeper insight into the life of Jesus, until He comes again, 00:12:56.86\00:13:01.23 and we'll be with Him through all eternity. 00:13:01.26\00:13:03.62
