Welcome to the Books of the Book. 00:00:19.03\00:00:20.74 We're exploring the gospel of Matthew, and that exploration 00:00:20.77\00:00:24.11 has brought us all the way down to Chapter 28. 00:00:24.14\00:00:27.90 We're going to be exploring this last chapter of the gospel 00:00:27.93\00:00:31.47 of Matthew. 00:00:31.50\00:00:32.87 I'm Glenn Russell, Professor of Religion at Andrews University, 00:00:32.90\00:00:35.59 here with friend and colleague, Professor Ranko Stefanovic, 00:00:35.62\00:00:39.47 who teaches at the Theological Seminary at Andrews University. 00:00:39.50\00:00:42.79 Ranko, it's hard to believe that we've been following Jesus here 00:00:42.82\00:00:46.97 into the 28th Chapter. 00:00:47.00\00:00:48.74 It's a wonderful journey, and although we want to press 00:00:48.77\00:00:52.72 into the text, I also want to say, thank you to the viewers, 00:00:52.75\00:00:56.69 and thank you to 3ABN. 00:00:56.72\00:00:58.11 It's just been a joy to partner together here. 00:00:58.14\00:01:00.77 This experience of studying scripture in-depth; 00:01:00.80\00:01:04.02 what a wonderful series idea! 00:01:04.05\00:01:06.35 You don't want to miss all the other series on the other books 00:01:06.38\00:01:09.07 of the scripture. 00:01:09.10\00:01:10.47 May God bless this ministry of 3ABN, and this series 00:01:10.50\00:01:13.61 in a very special way. 00:01:13.64\00:01:15.01 Wouldn't you agree Ranko? 00:01:15.04\00:01:16.41 Glenn, there is something I can with confidence, 00:01:16.44\00:01:19.57 We were here taping a series on the life of Jesus according to 00:01:19.60\00:01:23.58 the gospel of Matthew. 00:01:23.61\00:01:24.98 But being here with all these wonderful people at 3ABN; 00:01:25.01\00:01:29.15 actually seeing on their faces the reflection of Jesus' 00:01:29.18\00:01:33.52 character and His love; this is actually how I felt during these 00:01:33.55\00:01:37.18 days, taping, taping this series and being with them. 00:01:37.21\00:01:39.96 I really, really appreciate their ministry; 00:01:39.99\00:01:42.63 what they are doing. 00:01:42.66\00:01:44.03 Amen. 00:01:44.06\00:01:45.43 And one more time, let's get into God's Word with prayer. 00:01:45.46\00:01:47.87 Let's bow together. 00:01:47.90\00:01:49.27 Father we thank You for the privilege of studying Your Word. 00:01:49.30\00:01:53.20 We have the freedom to take Your Word and read it, 00:01:53.23\00:01:56.07 ponder it, pray over it, wrestle with it, struggle to understand 00:01:56.10\00:02:01.04 it, but most of all be moved, transformed, 00:02:01.07\00:02:04.20 and changed by Your Word. 00:02:04.23\00:02:05.60 Thank You for this privilege we have. 00:02:05.63\00:02:07.92 In Jesus' name, Amen. 00:02:07.95\00:02:09.67 Amen. 00:02:09.70\00:02:11.07 We're at the 28th Chapter. 00:02:11.10\00:02:14.03 We've been noticing, pondering, reflecting, meditating, 00:02:14.06\00:02:19.61 on those sacred scenes of Jesus on the cross. 00:02:19.64\00:02:24.77 And we find at last that Jesus breathes His last, 00:02:24.80\00:02:29.72 and He's buried. 00:02:29.75\00:02:31.12 There's this special resurrection that we've 00:02:31.15\00:02:32.93 talked about. 00:02:32.97\00:02:34.34 And now let's see the rest of the story, because Christianity 00:02:34.37\00:02:38.21 doesn't end with the cross. 00:02:38.24\00:02:39.61 Yeah. 00:02:39.64\00:02:41.01 Glenn, before we go to Chapter 28, let's just reflect a little 00:02:41.04\00:02:45.66 bit on the last several verses of Chapter 27. 00:02:45.69\00:02:50.91 We saw when Jesus was buried, praise God, when Jesus died, 00:02:50.94\00:02:57.66 okay, now He was to be buried. 00:02:57.69\00:02:59.48 God did not allow to happen to Jesus' body what usually 00:02:59.51\00:03:04.06 happened to the criminals. 00:03:04.09\00:03:05.46 The Bible says that the person by the name of Joseph, 00:03:05.49\00:03:10.83 from Arimathea, who was evidently a rich Pharisee. 00:03:10.86\00:03:15.41 According to the other gospels he was joined with Nicodemus. 00:03:15.44\00:03:19.70 They came. 00:03:19.73\00:03:21.10 They were very rich people, believe me. 00:03:21.13\00:03:22.93 They paid a large amount of money to Pilate in order to 00:03:22.96\00:03:28.41 get the body of Jesus, and to prepare His body 00:03:28.44\00:03:33.67 for a proper burial. 00:03:33.70\00:03:35.45 And again, according to prophecy, He's laid in a new 00:03:35.48\00:03:37.73 tomb, as prophecy had said, wrapped and laid there 00:03:37.76\00:03:42.74 in the tomb that Friday on the preparation day, as it says in 00:03:42.77\00:03:46.62 Verse 62. 00:03:46.65\00:03:48.02 It's a tragic thing to think that those who crucified 00:03:48.05\00:03:52.23 rushed home to keep the Sabbath, with such a startling lack of 00:03:52.26\00:03:57.14 understanding of the events that they had been part of. 00:03:57.17\00:03:59.41 So when did this happen? 00:03:59.44\00:04:00.84 It happened before the sunset on Friday. 00:04:00.87\00:04:04.82 According to the Biblical counting is days begin 00:04:04.85\00:04:10.40 with sunset. 00:04:10.43\00:04:13.22 So Jesus was buried and now the Sabbath began. 00:04:13.25\00:04:20.95 When we go to Chapter 28, Verse 1, it was after 00:04:20.98\00:04:27.45 the Sabbath. 00:04:27.48\00:04:29.64 Okay? 00:04:29.67\00:04:31.04 At the beginning of the new week. 00:04:31.07\00:04:33.14 On the first day of the week there is the resurrection. 00:04:33.17\00:04:36.35 Where is Jesus between Friday and Sunday? 00:04:36.38\00:04:40.76 He is in the tomb. 00:04:40.79\00:04:43.37 The gospel of Luke, Chapter 23, the last verses, provide some 00:04:43.40\00:04:48.35 additional information there that Jesus was actually arrested 00:04:48.38\00:04:54.86 on the Sabbath day according to the law. 00:04:54.89\00:04:57.92 Here we have a fantastic picture. 00:04:57.95\00:05:00.22 We are reminded in the book of Genesis, Chapters 1 and 2, 00:05:00.25\00:05:09.87 that when God created the heaven and earth in six days, 00:05:09.90\00:05:15.39 then God rested on the Sabbath day after that weeks work. 00:05:15.42\00:05:24.71 So now the same God, who has become flesh, 00:05:24.74\00:05:29.63 after accomplishing His mission of re-creation, 00:05:29.66\00:05:35.22 mission of redemption, okay. 00:05:35.25\00:05:38.38 On Friday He goes to rest. 00:05:38.41\00:05:41.47 Unfortunately, many Christians are using arguments that Sunday 00:05:41.50\00:05:46.96 is a very important day to celebrate and to rest, 00:05:46.99\00:05:50.04 and that Sunday replaced the Sabbath because of Jesus' 00:05:50.07\00:05:53.29 resurrection. 00:05:53.32\00:05:54.69 However, the gospels clearly, clearly state that the reason 00:05:54.72\00:05:59.34 why Jesus did not resurrect on the Sabbath was because He kept 00:05:59.37\00:06:03.55 the sanctity of the Sabbath according to the law. 00:06:03.58\00:06:07.19 He resurrected on Sunday because Sunday is the day of work. 00:06:07.22\00:06:12.07 But He rested according to the law of God following the path 00:06:12.10\00:06:16.61 of work He did at the beginning, after the creation week when He 00:06:16.64\00:06:20.87 rested on the Sabbath. 00:06:20.90\00:06:22.35 So it's after the Sabbath toward the dawn of the first day 00:06:22.38\00:06:25.28 of the week. 00:06:25.31\00:06:26.68 So we don't need to wonder when Sabbath is. 00:06:26.71\00:06:28.08 Yes. 00:06:28.11\00:06:29.48 It's before the first day; it's the end of the week. 00:06:29.51\00:06:30.88 Alright, if I might read Matthew 28... 00:06:30.91\00:06:33.15 Please. 00:06:33.18\00:06:34.55 ...Verse 1 and following; Now after the Sabbath toward the 00:06:34.58\00:06:36.59 dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene 00:06:36.62\00:06:38.63 and the other Mary went to see the sepulcher. 00:06:38.66\00:06:40.95 You see they'd buried Him. 00:06:40.98\00:06:42.44 They hadn't had a chance to anoint Him, and embalm Him, 00:06:42.47\00:06:46.12 and prepare Him fully for His burial. 00:06:46.15\00:06:48.69 And we should pause and notice that... 00:06:48.72\00:06:50.28 It was done in a great rush. 00:06:50.31\00:06:51.92 ...in a hurry, yes, and they wanted to finish the job. 00:06:51.95\00:06:54.40 Yes. 00:06:54.43\00:06:55.80 And, of course, burial is very important to a Hebrew. 00:06:55.83\00:06:57.78 Yeah. 00:06:57.81\00:06:59.18 What is done to a body when somebody dies is very; 00:06:59.21\00:07:00.76 it's important to all of us emotionally, but especially 00:07:00.79\00:07:03.00 for a Hebrew. 00:07:03.03\00:07:04.40 Even Joseph when he died said take care of my bones. 00:07:04.43\00:07:06.54 You know, take them up to... 00:07:06.57\00:07:07.94 And very special people would do it; trained people 00:07:07.97\00:07:10.68 for that job. 00:07:10.71\00:07:12.08 They knew how to do it. 00:07:12.11\00:07:13.48 So they'd come to do this sad work. 00:07:13.51\00:07:16.39 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: and an angel 00:07:16.42\00:07:18.95 of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back 00:07:18.98\00:07:21.59 the stone and sat upon it. 00:07:21.62\00:07:23.36 We just have to say, this is another marvelous case of 00:07:23.39\00:07:26.79 scriptures brevity. 00:07:26.82\00:07:28.19 If you and I were writing all the details, imagine, 00:07:28.22\00:07:31.57 there's a great earthquake, and an angel of the Lord descends 00:07:31.60\00:07:35.15 from heaven. 00:07:35.18\00:07:36.55 And, you know Ranko, I just think that all the angels wanted 00:07:36.58\00:07:39.77 to have that opportunity. 00:07:39.80\00:07:41.17 Oh yeah! 00:07:41.20\00:07:42.57 I bet when God the Father said, I need someone to go, 00:07:42.60\00:07:44.62 they all raised their hand. 00:07:44.65\00:07:46.02 I mean that's my imagination. 00:07:46.05\00:07:47.42 They all wanted to go and release our Savior. 00:07:47.45\00:07:50.48 The angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and rolled back 00:07:50.51\00:07:52.95 the stone, and then he sat upon it. 00:07:52.98\00:07:54.44 His appearance was like lightening; 00:07:54.47\00:07:55.92 his raiment was white as snow. 00:07:55.95\00:07:58.07 For fear of him the guards trembled and became 00:07:58.10\00:08:00.89 like dead men. 00:08:00.92\00:08:02.29 It's interesting to notice everything that was done 00:08:02.32\00:08:05.24 to keep Jesus in the tomb becomes proof that He was raised 00:08:05.27\00:08:09.42 from the tomb. 00:08:09.45\00:08:10.82 Glenn, can we understand Satan? 00:08:10.85\00:08:12.22 Please tell; explain to me. 00:08:14.32\00:08:18.03 Constantly during 31/2 years of Jesus' ministry 00:08:18.79\00:08:22.60 Satan is doing everything to prevent Jesus from going 00:08:22.63\00:08:26.34 to the cross. 00:08:26.37\00:08:27.74 Yes. 00:08:27.77\00:08:29.14 Finally Jesus is on the cross and Satan is doing everything 00:08:29.17\00:08:32.30 to pull Him down from the cross. 00:08:32.33\00:08:35.20 Remember that; not to die. 00:08:35.23\00:08:37.36 Now finally Jesus dies and He's in the tomb. 00:08:37.39\00:08:39.72 Now he does everything to keep Jesus there in the tomb. 00:08:39.75\00:08:43.76 And look what was done. 00:08:43.79\00:08:45.18 He was placed in the tomb. 00:08:45.21\00:08:46.68 There's a seal placed upon it. 00:08:46.72\00:08:48.11 There's soldiers placed around it. 00:08:48.15\00:08:50.10 Some people today wonder, did the resurrection really happen? 00:08:50.14\00:08:53.72 Christianity is based on historical events, Ranko. 00:08:53.75\00:08:57.42 If the resurrection didn't take place, what does Paul say? 00:08:57.45\00:09:01.57 What benefit is that? 00:09:01.60\00:09:03.80 We have no reason for our faith. 00:09:03.83\00:09:05.20 If Jesus did not resurrect then there is no resurrection. 00:09:05.23\00:09:08.57 And, unfortunately, that's the reason why many Christians 00:09:08.60\00:09:12.16 do not talk about the resurrection. 00:09:12.19\00:09:13.95 It's because of that; they doubt. 00:09:13.98\00:09:16.80 They have a problem with Jesus' resurrection. 00:09:16.83\00:09:19.34 To deny the resurrection of Jesus is to deny the general 00:09:19.37\00:09:22.52 resurrection that one day God's people will experience 00:09:22.55\00:09:27.25 at the Second Coming of Christ. 00:09:27.28\00:09:28.65 So we have a Centurion and soldiers guarding a dead body, 00:09:28.68\00:09:31.77 and the angel comes. 00:09:33.55\00:09:35.26 And the other gospels give us more details. 00:09:35.29\00:09:38.35 Matthew does not dwell on those. 00:09:38.38\00:09:39.96 But Matthew introduces us to the fact that an angel remains 00:09:39.99\00:09:44.45 there and says to the women, Don't be afraid. 00:09:44.48\00:09:47.09 I know you seek Jesus who was crucified. 00:09:47.12\00:09:50.18 By the way, isn't that who we should all seek; 00:09:50.21\00:09:52.61 Jesus who was crucified? 00:09:52.64\00:09:54.10 He is not here: for he has risen as he said. 00:09:54.13\00:09:57.21 Come, and see the place where he lay. 00:09:57.24\00:09:58.86 Then quickly go and tell his disciples. 00:09:58.89\00:10:01.06 Wasn't it strange that it's a woman who's the first one 00:10:01.09\00:10:04.24 to give testimony? 00:10:04.27\00:10:05.64 Actually, the gospel of Matthew begins with women. 00:10:05.67\00:10:09.57 Yes. 00:10:09.60\00:10:10.97 Remember they're included in genealogy. 00:10:11.00\00:10:12.37 Now these women are the first ones to go there to the tomb, 00:10:12.40\00:10:19.14 and to carry the news all around that the Savior is not there. 00:10:19.17\00:10:24.46 By the way, one of the most touching moments for me was when 00:10:24.49\00:10:27.85 I was there in Jerusalem. 00:10:27.88\00:10:29.49 There is a place that some people thought could be 00:10:29.52\00:10:37.32 the tomb of Jesus. 00:10:37.35\00:10:39.94 Today we know that it was not the tomb of Jesus. 00:10:39.97\00:10:42.22 But, you know, the garden... 00:10:42.25\00:10:44.19 The very scene... 00:10:44.22\00:10:45.59 It's very nice to go there. 00:10:45.62\00:10:47.20 You know that it did not happen there. 00:10:47.23\00:10:48.76 But there is something that I still visualize in my eyes 00:10:48.79\00:10:52.82 that tomb that they discovered with that, you know, 00:10:52.85\00:10:56.69 stone that was rolled over the entrance there. 00:10:56.72\00:10:59.21 But there is something that they made there in the 00:10:59.24\00:11:00.80 inscription; it's very emotional. 00:11:00.83\00:11:02.79 They said, He's not here. 00:11:02.82\00:11:05.76 He is risen. 00:11:05.79\00:11:07.16 When you look there, Glenn, you know you and me, we know many, 00:11:07.19\00:11:13.38 many religions in this world. 00:11:13.41\00:11:15.65 And I grew up among people who were not Christians. 00:11:15.68\00:11:20.59 I lived in different parts of the world; 00:11:20.62\00:11:23.42 living among people of different religions. 00:11:23.45\00:11:26.00 And we talked about their founders who were really 00:11:26.03\00:11:28.46 good, good, good men. 00:11:28.49\00:11:30.33 But they would always point to their tombs 00:11:30.36\00:11:33.11 where they were buried. 00:11:33.14\00:11:34.51 They'd go and they made pilgrimages there, etc. 00:11:34.54\00:11:36.63 It's so nice when I talk about the founder of my religion. 00:11:36.66\00:11:42.96 To tell them, I'm sorry. 00:11:42.99\00:11:45.06 I cannot make any pilgrimage. 00:11:45.09\00:11:47.27 I cannot go to His tomb. 00:11:47.30\00:11:49.61 He's not there! 00:11:49.64\00:11:51.63 He's not at the tomb! 00:11:51.66\00:11:53.03 It's empty! 00:11:53.06\00:11:54.43 Actually, I don't need to make a pilgrimage. 00:11:54.46\00:11:56.63 Uh huh. 00:11:56.66\00:11:58.03 Even here, as we are taping, wherever I go I can lift my head 00:11:58.06\00:12:03.94 there toward Him, and give Him thanks for what He did 00:12:03.97\00:12:07.07 because He is alive! 00:12:07.10\00:12:09.42 The reality of the cross is verified by the stone being 00:12:09.45\00:12:15.33 rolled, you know, Ranko some people say, well, maybe He 00:12:15.36\00:12:18.50 fainted; maybe He just went unconscious for awhile 00:12:18.53\00:12:22.34 and came back. 00:12:22.37\00:12:23.74 How would He roll the stone away after being scourged? 00:12:23.77\00:12:25.65 Some other people say, Maybe it was in a different place. 00:12:25.68\00:12:28.55 Why didn't they present the body? 00:12:28.58\00:12:31.08 The resurrection of Jesus is a great dilemma for the leaders 00:12:31.11\00:12:34.89 of the people. 00:12:34.92\00:12:36.29 Actually, the gospel writers, we're not just talking about 00:12:36.32\00:12:38.13 the gospel of Matthew, we are talking in general terms. 00:12:38.16\00:12:40.68 They want to assure us that Jesus indeed died. 00:12:40.71\00:12:45.50 How do you know that? 00:12:45.53\00:12:46.90 They said, you know, the bodies of the crucified people could 00:12:46.93\00:12:54.95 not be on the cross during the Sabbath day 00:12:54.98\00:12:57.50 or during the festivals. 00:12:57.53\00:12:58.90 That's why Pilot ordered to break the bones of those people, 00:12:58.93\00:13:02.67 you know, so they could not support themselves any longer 00:13:02.71\00:13:06.44 and finally they would die. 00:13:06.47\00:13:09.18 By the way, that young man, John's son, Ezekiel, between 00:13:09.21\00:13:14.03 that we just mentioned was; his bones were broken. 00:13:14.07\00:13:17.96 So it confirms what we read there in the gospels. 00:13:18.00\00:13:21.78 So they broke the bones of those two criminals. 00:13:21.81\00:13:25.30 They came to Jesus; they saw that he died already. 00:13:25.33\00:13:28.79 Keep in mind, they are experts. 00:13:28.82\00:13:30.19 They know if the person is alive or not. 00:13:30.22\00:13:31.99 But in order to confirm the death of Jesus; actually they 00:13:32.02\00:13:35.10 pierce His body. 00:13:35.14\00:13:36.51 And according to the gospel of John, water mixed with blood, 00:13:36.54\00:13:39.83 which was the sign of death, actually came out of the body 00:13:39.87\00:13:43.50 of Jesus. 00:13:43.53\00:13:44.90 So it was very clear that Jesus was dead when He was buried. 00:13:44.93\00:13:47.99 And if you've had your side pierced, and your hands nailed, 00:13:48.02\00:13:51.32 then your ankles driven through with a spike, and you've been 00:13:51.36\00:13:54.65 scourged, there's no way; He was dead. 00:13:54.69\00:13:58.51 There's no question about it. 00:13:58.54\00:13:59.91 The Romans were experts at killing people. 00:13:59.94\00:14:01.43 Jesus was dead. 00:14:01.46\00:14:02.83 But we could say much more about that. 00:14:02.86\00:14:04.55 Let's move, Ranko to... 00:14:04.58\00:14:05.95 Till after the break. 00:14:05.98\00:14:07.35 Let's move to the impact of the resurrection, 00:14:07.38\00:14:11.25 and other evidences. 00:14:11.29\00:14:12.90 There were others who saw the risen Lord afterwards. 00:14:12.93\00:14:15.40 We're going to come back to that right after our break. 00:14:15.44\00:14:17.88 We'll be right back. 00:14:17.91\00:14:19.28
