We're back discovering and exploring the marvelous 00:00:01.63\00:00:05.76 love of Jesus on the cross for you and for me. 00:00:05.79\00:00:08.64 Let's continue on with Matthew Chapter 27. 00:00:08.67\00:00:12.36 Jesus comes to the place of the cross. 00:00:12.39\00:00:14.77 It's early morning, it says here 00:00:14.80\00:00:18.46 in verse 45, the sixth hour. 00:00:18.49\00:00:20.71 What time would that be, Ranko? 00:00:20.74\00:00:22.11 Sixth hour would be noon. Because Jews, 00:00:22.14\00:00:26.09 they count the time from 6 in the morning. 00:00:26.12\00:00:28.44 But some things that happened earlier in the morning, 00:00:28.47\00:00:31.04 let's go back and notice. 00:00:31.07\00:00:32.44 He arrives there at the cross and he is nailed to the cross 00:00:32.47\00:00:37.56 and it's interesting to notice how the people respond. 00:00:37.59\00:00:41.89 And in verse 39 of Mathew 27, 00:00:41.92\00:00:44.31 "And those who passed by deride him, 00:00:44.34\00:00:46.35 wagging their heads saying, 00:00:46.38\00:00:47.75 He who would destroy the temple 00:00:47.78\00:00:49.15 and build in three days, save yourself 00:00:49.18\00:00:50.97 If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross." 00:00:51.00\00:00:53.29 What they are saying is really true. 00:00:53.32\00:00:55.17 He couldn't be the Savior and come down from the cross. 00:00:55.20\00:00:59.09 Actually the more serious statement is, 00:00:59.12\00:01:00.85 the one who helped others, he cannot help himself. 00:01:00.88\00:01:05.56 That was actually what Jesus mission was, 00:01:05.59\00:01:08.26 to come to save us, but he could not use 00:01:08.29\00:01:11.28 His divine prerogative to help himself. 00:01:11.31\00:01:18.69 And a few technical things which has to mention is, 00:01:18.72\00:01:21.75 we go to Jerusalem, we can be very much certain 00:01:21.78\00:01:27.02 about the place where Jesus was crucified. 00:01:27.05\00:01:30.26 It's called here Golgotha 00:01:30.29\00:01:32.42 or Calvary, which is one Latin, 00:01:32.45\00:01:34.69 another one is Aramaic, is the same place. 00:01:34.72\00:01:39.19 It's probably the place that is marked today 00:01:39.22\00:01:41.27 by the church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. 00:01:41.30\00:01:45.30 It's most likely-- their own evidences were that, 00:01:45.33\00:01:48.44 that place was outside of the city wall. 00:01:48.47\00:01:53.43 Second thing is Jesus was on the cross 00:01:53.46\00:01:56.42 for about six hours He was crucified 00:01:56.45\00:02:01.06 at the 3rd hour, which was 9 in the morning. 00:02:01.09\00:02:04.25 So the trial was very early in the morning. 00:02:04.28\00:02:07.25 And He died at 9 hour, 00:02:07.28\00:02:11.09 which was actually 3 in the afternoon. 00:02:11.12\00:02:13.88 So, he was--actually, it's very interesting is, 00:02:13.91\00:02:17.68 when we read the gospels, 00:02:17.71\00:02:19.81 the gospels did not put too much emphasis 00:02:19.84\00:02:22.77 on the physical suffering of Jesus. 00:02:22.80\00:02:25.36 For instance, Gibson's movie, it's there. 00:02:25.39\00:02:28.57 Jesus was much shorter time 00:02:28.60\00:02:33.15 on the cross than other criminals. 00:02:33.18\00:02:34.55 Usually criminals would be there 00:02:34.58\00:02:36.35 on the cross for several days. 00:02:36.38\00:02:38.53 In fact, that's why the Roman soldiers 00:02:38.56\00:02:40.08 came to break the legs. To break the legs. 00:02:40.11\00:02:41.71 So they couldn't flee away overnight or something. 00:02:41.74\00:02:43.50 But they were surprised actually that Jesus was there 00:02:43.53\00:02:46.83 when they approached after six hours. 00:02:46.86\00:02:48.42 It was very unusual, what is telling us 00:02:48.45\00:02:51.09 that the emphasis on the gospel 00:02:51.12\00:02:53.01 is not on the physical suffering of Jesus. 00:02:53.04\00:02:56.25 It was on his mental and emotional. 00:02:56.28\00:02:58.86 When Jesus died, it was not just 00:02:58.89\00:03:01.75 because of the physical suffering. 00:03:01.78\00:03:04.15 That famous phrase that Jesus died of broken heart, 00:03:04.18\00:03:08.46 it was the weight of the sins of the humanity 00:03:08.49\00:03:11.47 that was placed on Him and He died 00:03:11.50\00:03:15.18 because of the broken heart, you know, 00:03:15.21\00:03:17.96 to save people from their sins. 00:03:17.99\00:03:20.07 Ranko, you mentioned that we have very little 00:03:20.10\00:03:22.01 evidence of exactly how crucifixion was. 00:03:22.04\00:03:24.83 But there has been a discovery that can give us 00:03:24.86\00:03:27.08 some light on this very important subject. 00:03:27.11\00:03:29.48 Tell us about it. Yes, praise God. 00:03:29.51\00:03:31.98 We have at least one finding from the first century 00:03:32.01\00:03:39.47 that give us little bit of glimpse into how terrible 00:03:39.50\00:03:45.42 and agonizing the experience of crucified 00:03:45.45\00:03:48.23 people on the cross was. 00:03:48.26\00:03:49.95 Actually, in 1968, a discovery 00:03:49.98\00:03:53.86 in Jerusalem was found of the -- 00:03:53.89\00:03:57.76 containing bones of a young man. 00:03:57.79\00:04:01.73 You know even his name, 00:04:01.76\00:04:03.14 by name of John the son of Eleazar. 00:04:03.17\00:04:06.83 He was crucified in the first century. 00:04:06.86\00:04:09.26 We mentioned already that crucified 00:04:09.29\00:04:12.29 people were not allowed to be buried. 00:04:12.32\00:04:16.08 But most likely the family of this young man, 00:04:16.11\00:04:20.36 his parents, were very rich. 00:04:20.39\00:04:23.05 So they were able to bribe the Roman authorities 00:04:23.08\00:04:26.83 and to purchase the body of their son 00:04:26.86\00:04:31.44 and to bury him properly. By the way, 00:04:31.47\00:04:34.65 when I was in Jerusalem, if you go 00:04:34.68\00:04:36.10 to the Rockefeller Museum there, 00:04:36.13\00:04:37.75 we see the remnants of the bones of that young man 00:04:37.78\00:04:41.13 and we learn something. 00:04:41.16\00:04:42.71 Says that he was fastened to the cross with three nails. 00:04:42.74\00:04:48.30 Okay? Two of them were on the forearm. 00:04:48.33\00:04:50.77 So it was not here. It was here, right here. 00:04:50.80\00:04:53.45 Because here if you put the nail, 00:04:53.48\00:04:56.03 there is not too much, I mean, 00:04:56.06\00:04:57.43 there is a pain but not too much. 00:04:57.46\00:04:58.83 When you put here, it's agonizing pain. 00:04:58.86\00:05:02.12 But I still cannot erase from my mind 00:05:02.15\00:05:07.41 what I saw about the third nail. 00:05:07.44\00:05:10.48 And please I'd like to demonstrate a little bit-- 00:05:10.51\00:05:12.62 So you're talking about nails in the feet. 00:05:12.65\00:05:14.52 Feet. Usually, people think that the nail went here, 00:05:14.55\00:05:18.45 but actually he was fastened on the cross and put away. 00:05:18.48\00:05:22.77 His body was completely twisted 00:05:22.80\00:05:26.25 and very huge nail was put here, 00:05:26.28\00:05:29.97 through this bone here, through this joint here 00:05:30.00\00:05:32.80 and come here 00:05:32.83\00:05:34.34 and that's how He was nailed on the cross. 00:05:34.80\00:05:37.84 So can you imagine, I mean, 00:05:37.87\00:05:39.71 when he was hanging on that cross there. 00:05:39.74\00:05:43.23 When you go to the museum, 00:05:43.26\00:05:45.24 there is an astonishing scenery that you can see. 00:05:45.27\00:05:49.50 Evidently, they could not pull out the nail, 00:05:49.53\00:05:54.25 you know, to bury him. 00:05:54.28\00:05:55.93 So they cut the piece of the cross. 00:05:55.96\00:06:01.81 And it was in such condition that 00:06:01.84\00:06:03.62 this young man was buried. And of course, 00:06:03.65\00:06:07.36 one of the terrible things about 00:06:07.39\00:06:08.76 crucifixion was actually, a person couldn't breathe 00:06:08.79\00:06:11.52 and they would have to push themselves up. 00:06:11.55\00:06:14.05 Imagine with that spike through your ankles. 00:06:14.08\00:06:17.07 Actually, really, when the person 00:06:17.10\00:06:19.20 was on the cross, the person could easily die 00:06:19.23\00:06:21.11 because the pressure was so much, 00:06:21.14\00:06:22.82 he could not breathe. 00:06:22.85\00:06:24.22 So what they put there, on that vertical 00:06:24.25\00:06:29.65 beam on the cross, they would put here 00:06:29.68\00:06:31.42 support to keep the person alive as long as possible. 00:06:31.45\00:06:36.04 So that person would suffer and die in the agonizing pain. 00:06:36.07\00:06:40.34 But so many times when we watch 00:06:40.37\00:06:42.41 the picture of crucified Jesus on the cross, 00:06:42.44\00:06:45.28 it looks so nice that almost you like to be there. 00:06:45.31\00:06:48.52 But we have to understand that actually, 00:06:48.55\00:06:50.76 the person was stripped of the clothes, of the robes. 00:06:50.79\00:06:54.52 We read it clearly in the Gospel of Matthew 00:06:54.55\00:06:56.90 and other gospels. The person was on the cross 00:06:56.93\00:06:59.46 completely naked. 00:06:59.49\00:07:02.37 The humiliation was total. Actually, Glenn, 00:07:02.40\00:07:05.69 this is what explains what happened at noon, 00:07:05.72\00:07:08.81 actually, in the sixth hour. What do-- 00:07:08.84\00:07:10.94 If I may read Mathew 27 verse 45 and following. 00:07:10.97\00:07:14.93 "Now from the sixth hour there was darkness 00:07:14.96\00:07:17.11 over all the land until the ninth hour." 00:07:17.14\00:07:19.74 So let's remember, He's been on the cross for three hours, 00:07:19.77\00:07:22.41 now moves to the next stage 00:07:22.44\00:07:24.89 and darkness surrounds the cross. 00:07:24.92\00:07:26.53 So there was mocking, there was, you know, 00:07:26.56\00:07:29.30 laughing, torture, spitting on Jesus, 00:07:29.33\00:07:31.88 accusations, all kind. But now happened something, 00:07:31.91\00:07:34.49 what was that--Now we even see nature responding. 00:07:34.52\00:07:37.36 "About the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, 00:07:37.39\00:07:41.15 'Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?' That is, 'My God, My God, 00:07:41.18\00:07:45.42 why have you forsaken me?' 00:07:45.45\00:07:47.17 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, 00:07:47.20\00:07:49.57 This man is calling Elijah.' And one of them 00:07:49.60\00:07:52.03 at once ran and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar. 00:07:52.06\00:07:54.90 Put it on a reed and gave Him to drink. 00:07:54.93\00:07:56.65 But the others said, 'Wait, 00:07:56.68\00:07:58.07 let us see whether Elijah will come and save him. 00:07:58.10\00:08:00.84 '" What an attitude. So what happened at noon? 00:08:00.87\00:08:03.92 Darkness, why darkness? We have to understand 00:08:03.95\00:08:08.04 that the Father was still close to His son there. 00:08:08.07\00:08:11.04 So we have here the heaven's intervention, 00:08:11.07\00:08:13.49 even the sun darkened. Why? To cover Jesus, 00:08:13.52\00:08:18.67 to hide Him from the eyes of the people 00:08:18.70\00:08:21.29 being humiliated there on the cross. 00:08:21.32\00:08:23.18 So for three hours, 00:08:23.21\00:08:24.58 people could hardly even see Jesus. 00:08:24.61\00:08:27.50 The darkness was so dense there. 00:08:27.53\00:08:30.37 And, you know, we should pause right here to notice, 00:08:30.40\00:08:32.65 sometimes in our experience, 00:08:32.68\00:08:34.87 God may seem far away just like 00:08:34.90\00:08:37.07 He seemed so far from Jesus. 00:08:37.10\00:08:40.53 But He was right there beside. 00:08:40.56\00:08:42.32 The sin blotted His presence out. 00:08:42.35\00:08:45.52 But the Father was with the Son. 00:08:45.55\00:08:47.49 He never abandoned Jesus, 00:08:47.52\00:08:49.20 even though the experience was so difficult. 00:08:49.23\00:08:51.65 And we should remember that in our own lives, 00:08:51.68\00:08:53.23 sometimes we just can't see God. 00:08:53.26\00:08:55.16 It doesn't mean He's not there. 00:08:55.19\00:08:56.96 It means that there's a darkness that comes. 00:08:56.99\00:08:59.06 My Father, my Father, why have you forsaken me? 00:08:59.09\00:09:01.73 The Father did not forsake-- But He felt forsaken. 00:09:01.76\00:09:05.90 He couldn't see beyond the cross. 00:09:05.93\00:09:08.50 Only faith hung on. And, Glenn, 00:09:08.53\00:09:10.48 I would like to go to the final point. 00:09:10.51\00:09:12.59 And finally Jesus died. Verse 50, what was going on? 00:09:12.62\00:09:16.88 "And Jesus cried again with a loud voice, 00:09:16.91\00:09:18.90 and yielded up His spirit. 00:09:18.93\00:09:20.59 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, 00:09:20.62\00:09:22.86 from top to bottom. And the earth shook, 00:09:22.89\00:09:24.55 and the rocks were split. The tombs were opened. 00:09:24.58\00:09:27.01 And many bodies of the saints 00:09:27.04\00:09:28.63 who had fallen asleep were raised." 00:09:28.66\00:09:30.66 We should notice at the ninth hour, 00:09:30.69\00:09:33.33 at 3 o'clock, was the time of what, the Passover lamb? 00:09:33.36\00:09:36.04 Passover lamb. The slaying of the Lamb. 00:09:36.07\00:09:38.33 Has been fulfilled with Jesus-- 00:09:38.36\00:09:39.77 You know, for centuries, the Jewish people 00:09:39.80\00:09:44.26 were offering that sacrificial lamb on the altar 00:09:44.29\00:09:48.44 and with every Passover, they would eat that lamb 00:09:48.47\00:09:52.02 and take the blood and put there on the doorpost. 00:09:52.05\00:09:57.58 And now at the moment, you see that the Lamb of God, 00:09:57.61\00:10:02.39 the real Lamb finally died, 00:10:02.42\00:10:06.54 was offered on the altar 00:10:06.57\00:10:09.28 for the sins of all people who lived before. 00:10:09.31\00:10:12.14 You remember? Yes. 00:10:12.17\00:10:13.54 The beginning of the gospel of Matthew, 00:10:13.57\00:10:14.94 Jesus came to save His people from their sins. 00:10:14.97\00:10:17.46 Now that salvation is there provided, and now, 00:10:17.49\00:10:20.67 all the function of the temple, 00:10:20.70\00:10:22.27 all the lessons that the temple-- 00:10:23.91\00:10:25.73 that the rituals in the temple were teaching people 00:10:25.76\00:10:29.26 actually came to the end. 00:10:29.29\00:10:30.66 You don't need anymore animal sacrifices. 00:10:30.69\00:10:33.08 You don't need the animal blood because 00:10:33.11\00:10:35.18 now the live sacrifice, the live sacrifice of 00:10:35.21\00:10:38.61 Jesus Christhas been offer. 00:10:38.64\00:10:40.01 But there is also the second point. 00:10:40.04\00:10:41.79 When Jesus died, there was an earthquake. 00:10:41.82\00:10:44.05 What happened, Glenn, with the earthquake? 00:10:44.08\00:10:46.10 This is a detail that's often neglected. 00:10:46.13\00:10:48.05 The earth shook, and verse 51 "The tombs were opened. 00:10:48.08\00:10:51.67 And many bodies of the saints 00:10:51.70\00:10:53.07 who had fallen asleep were raised. 00:10:53.10\00:10:54.94 Coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, 00:10:54.97\00:10:57.48 they went into the holy city and appeared to many." 00:10:57.51\00:11:00.57 It's very hard to deal here with this text 00:11:00.60\00:11:02.80 because it's not clear 00:11:02.83\00:11:04.29 if those people were resurrected 00:11:04.32\00:11:07.62 at the moment Jesus died 00:11:07.65\00:11:09.02 or at the time of His resurrection. 00:11:09.05\00:11:11.43 When I look Greek text carefully, 00:11:11.46\00:11:14.27 it indicates the moment Jesus died, 00:11:14.30\00:11:16.80 the tombs were opened and they resurrected 00:11:16.83\00:11:20.99 most likely at the resurrection of Jesus, 00:11:21.02\00:11:24.06 which was on Sunday. 00:11:24.09\00:11:25.46 They went there to Jerusalem to show themselves 00:11:25.49\00:11:28.62 there to the people and actually this group-- 00:11:28.65\00:11:32.78 people were very much curious about. 00:11:32.81\00:11:35.19 Who were those people? And the few things 00:11:35.22\00:11:39.28 that the rest of the Bible indicates was, 00:11:39.31\00:11:42.97 most likely we are dealing here 00:11:43.00\00:11:44.79 with the prominent 00:11:44.82\00:11:47.67 personalities of the Old Testament. 00:11:47.70\00:11:50.70 Who knows? Maybe David, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, 00:11:50.73\00:11:54.40 prominent personalities of the Old Testament. 00:11:54.43\00:11:56.87 They were resurrected. What did they do? 00:11:56.90\00:11:59.67 They went there to Jerusalem, telling people, 00:11:59.70\00:12:02.75 you crucified the promised one. 00:12:02.78\00:12:04.72 You see we are talking about the day of Pentecost, 00:12:04.75\00:12:08.14 how 3,000 people responded, 5,000 people responded. 00:12:08.17\00:12:12.82 There was not any emotional outbreak at Peter's preaching 00:12:12.85\00:12:17.06 Actually, those people repented 00:12:17.09\00:12:18.86 and the ground was prepare with powerful 00:12:18.89\00:12:22.72 testimony of this resurrected saints. 00:12:22.75\00:12:25.19 Just to the viewers, most likely, 00:12:25.22\00:12:27.78 these resurrected saints, they ascended with Jesus 00:12:27.81\00:12:32.04 to the heavenly places, according to Ephesians 00:12:32.07\00:12:34.97 Chapter 4 and they were the ones 00:12:35.00\00:12:37.25 presented in the Book of Revelation as 24 elders 00:12:37.28\00:12:40.53 there before the throne of God. You go. 00:12:40.56\00:12:43.33 So we see this incredible experience. 00:12:43.36\00:12:46.68 Jesus had said I have the keys of heaven 00:12:46.71\00:12:50.27 and of death and when He dies the graves open. 00:12:50.30\00:12:53.87 Actually, these resurrected saints were the first 00:12:53.90\00:12:57.22 fruit of Jesus' resurrection, telling us that 00:12:57.25\00:13:01.69 one day we accept today Jesus Christ as our Savior. 00:13:01.72\00:13:04.93 We will one day resurrect, 00:13:04.96\00:13:07.00 and be with Jesus there in the heavenly 00:13:07.03\00:13:09.32 places through all eternity. Amen. 00:13:09.35\00:13:11.08
