Welcome back. 00:00:01.01\00:00:01.98 We're comparing Peter's experience with that of Judas. 00:00:01.99\00:00:05.50 And we've noticed that both seemed--initially, 00:00:05.51\00:00:09.08 superficially, you might think they both repented. 00:00:09.09\00:00:11.60 But Judas really repented over the fact 00:00:11.61\00:00:14.50 that it didn't workout. 00:00:14.51\00:00:15.50 The consequences were not as he intended. 00:00:15.51\00:00:18.22 Peter's heart was repentant but not Judas. 00:00:18.23\00:00:21.64 Judas never repented. 00:00:21.65\00:00:22.75 See when we read there in the Garden of Gethsemane, 00:00:22.76\00:00:25.81 when Judas with that mob approach Jesus, 00:00:25.82\00:00:31.37 Jesus addressed him as friend. 00:00:31.38\00:00:32.76 And he could see that loving face, forgiving face of Jesus. 00:00:32.77\00:00:38.62 Peter after three times of denial of Jesus, 00:00:38.63\00:00:46.17 he sees the same face, the same expression. 00:00:46.18\00:00:49.67 Jesus could not say anything to him but there is very, 00:00:49.68\00:00:52.59 very interesting is that the same face of Jesus 00:00:52.60\00:00:56.97 brings one person to repent. 00:00:56.98\00:00:58.53 He felt so guilty for what he did to Jesus. 00:00:58.54\00:01:03.49 His heart is broken. His heart was broken. 00:01:03.50\00:01:05.69 He wanted to cry because of that. 00:01:05.70\00:01:07.42 But another reaction that we have, 00:01:07.43\00:01:11.80 that one off Judas actually-- he made him to be sorry, 00:01:11.81\00:01:18.23 to repent because of the consequences, 00:01:18.24\00:01:20.18 you know, what he did to Jesus. Yes. 00:01:20.19\00:01:23.41 Now we must press on with the story. 00:01:23.42\00:01:25.32 Please. 00:01:25.33\00:01:26.34 And they take the money from Judas 00:01:26.35\00:01:28.21 and buy a potter's field and then it says in verse 11, 00:01:28.22\00:01:32.55 Now Jesus stood before the Governor, 00:01:32.56\00:01:34.57 and the Governor asked Him. 00:01:34.58\00:01:35.70 So now we've gone to another phase. 00:01:35.71\00:01:37.56 Actually, we really have to read verses one and two. 00:01:37.57\00:01:39.76 Okay, when morning came, all the chief priests 00:01:39.77\00:01:42.24 and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus 00:01:42.25\00:01:44.70 to put him to death. 00:01:44.71\00:01:45.77 And they bound him and led him away 00:01:45.78\00:01:47.67 and delivered him to Pilate, the governor. 00:01:47.68\00:01:49.61 Ranko, just one more time, just very briefly, 00:01:49.62\00:01:52.12 what are a few things that indicate 00:01:52.13\00:01:53.81 the illegality of this trial? 00:01:53.82\00:01:56.10 It was at night, that was one of the factors 00:01:56.11\00:01:58.46 and that was illegal, a night trial. 00:01:58.47\00:02:00.72 There're few things we have to keep in mind. 00:02:00.73\00:02:03.14 What were the duties of the Sanhedrin? 00:02:03.15\00:02:06.93 Sanhedrin was intended to act as a council for defense 00:02:06.94\00:02:11.58 of a guilty person, to defend 00:02:11.59\00:02:13.18 guilty person before the Romans. 00:02:13.19\00:02:15.07 What do we have here? 00:02:15.08\00:02:16.36 The accusers. 00:02:16.37\00:02:18.48 Second one, the sentence could not be executed 00:02:18.49\00:02:22.05 on the same day as a trial, 00:02:22.06\00:02:23.46 but they were so eager to bring 00:02:23.47\00:02:25.43 Jesus very early in the morning 00:02:25.44\00:02:27.46 and the execution is done the same day, 00:02:27.47\00:02:31.27 before the sunset, before the Passover starts. 00:02:31.28\00:02:33.98 The next one, the hearing could not be heard 00:02:33.99\00:02:36.75 during the night. 00:02:36.76\00:02:37.94 That's exactly where they did it. 00:02:37.95\00:02:39.47 And the final one, trial could not be held 00:02:39.48\00:02:41.66 on eve of the Sabbath or on eve of the festival day. 00:02:41.67\00:02:46.71 This, you see, they broke all the rules and regulations. 00:02:46.72\00:02:52.56 So now it moves from just a Jewish trial or hearing. 00:02:52.57\00:02:57.24 Now we get the Romans involved. 00:02:57.25\00:02:58.82 So one more time let's be reminded, 00:02:58.83\00:03:01.51 a Roman procurator-- he was put by Romans 00:03:01.52\00:03:06.26 in charge of Judea, instead of Herod the great's son, 00:03:06.27\00:03:12.05 Archelaus, who was expelled from Romans 00:03:12.06\00:03:15.38 after few years of his terrible, terrible rule there in-- 00:03:15.39\00:03:20.00 So now Pilate was in charge. 00:03:20.01\00:03:21.83 We have to keep in mind 00:03:21.84\00:03:23.32 that Pilate did not reside in Jerusalem. 00:03:23.33\00:03:27.57 His residence was in Caesarea, 00:03:27.58\00:03:31.96 so he resided there. 00:03:31.97\00:03:33.87 When we go to Caesarea, there are so many ruins there. 00:03:33.88\00:03:37.60 We can see how magnificent place, 00:03:37.61\00:03:40.51 you know, Herod the Great built in honors of Caesar. 00:03:40.52\00:03:45.18 But during-- at the time of festivals, 00:03:45.19\00:03:49.68 when many Jews from all over the Roman Empire 00:03:49.69\00:03:54.00 came there to Jerusalem, the procurator 00:03:54.01\00:03:57.69 would come there to Jerusalem 00:03:57.70\00:03:59.51 and reside in Herod's palace there. 00:03:59.52\00:04:02.00 Why? 00:04:02.01\00:04:03.00 Because it was during the festivals that the Jewish 00:04:03.01\00:04:05.83 people would retell all the stories 00:04:05.84\00:04:10.24 of their expectations of the Messiah. 00:04:10.25\00:04:12.25 And it was the best opportunity for them that the riot starts 00:04:12.26\00:04:16.20 in the rebellion against the Romans. 00:04:16.21\00:04:17.74 So the procurator would come there to Jerusalem 00:04:17.75\00:04:20.83 just to watch, to be sure that everything, 00:04:20.84\00:04:23.25 everything is okay. 00:04:23.26\00:04:24.65 That's why Pilate, at that time, was in Jerusalem. 00:04:24.66\00:04:27.66 And the Roman authorities are not gonna be impressed 00:04:27.67\00:04:31.15 by a religious argument among Jesus and the Pharisees. 00:04:31.16\00:04:35.33 What they're concerned about is these people 00:04:35.34\00:04:38.12 rising up in rebellion. 00:04:38.13\00:04:39.27 Because there were--there'd been many rebellions. 00:04:39.28\00:04:41.39 There had been many attempts. 00:04:41.40\00:04:43.07 Being assigned to rule over the Jews was not an easy task. 00:04:43.08\00:04:46.60 So we see the situation changing. 00:04:46.61\00:04:51.51 So can you read from verse 11 00:04:51.52\00:04:53.46 that you see how the trial took place. 00:04:53.47\00:04:55.13 Now Jesus stood before the Governor, 00:04:55.14\00:04:56.73 and the Governor asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" 00:04:56.74\00:04:59.63 and Jesus said, "You have said so." 00:04:59.64\00:05:02.23 But when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, 00:05:02.24\00:05:05.02 He made no answer. 00:05:05.03\00:05:06.60 Then Pilate said to Him, "Do you not hear many things 00:05:06.61\00:05:09.64 they testify against You?" 00:05:09.65\00:05:11.18 But He gave him no answer, not even a single charge, 00:05:11.19\00:05:14.30 so that the governor wondered greatly. 00:05:14.31\00:05:18.60 We have to understand that the trial took place 00:05:18.61\00:05:23.43 in certain building. 00:05:23.44\00:05:27.48 The tradition favors the tower of Antonia. 00:05:27.49\00:05:31.32 That actually was near the temple 00:05:31.33\00:05:34.43 and marked the beginning of Via Dolorosa, that place. 00:05:34.44\00:05:40.04 However, the evidence supports that praetorian 00:05:40.05\00:05:42.97 was in the palace of Herod, 00:05:42.98\00:05:45.61 where Roman procurators resided 00:05:45.62\00:05:48.47 during those days of the festival, 00:05:48.48\00:05:50.37 there in Jerusalem. 00:05:50.38\00:05:52.68 So, you know, they brought Jesus early in the morning, 00:05:52.69\00:05:55.41 you know, the Roman governors and procurators 00:05:55.42\00:05:59.74 they like--they were drinking and spending, you know, 00:05:59.75\00:06:03.49 good part of the night in drinking and having fun. 00:06:03.50\00:06:06.82 But in the morning they wanted to sleep. 00:06:06.83\00:06:10.21 So Pilate was not happy that they woke him up. 00:06:10.22\00:06:14.45 And what was the accusation? 00:06:14.46\00:06:18.02 We saw it. 00:06:18.03\00:06:19.27 He was the one who claimed to sit 00:06:19.28\00:06:21.16 at the right hand of God. 00:06:21.17\00:06:22.37 He's that messianic figure. He claimed to be king. 00:06:22.38\00:06:24.66 So Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" 00:06:24.67\00:06:29.60 If you are, then only one consequences. 00:06:29.61\00:06:32.96 So the sentence is already pronounced. 00:06:32.97\00:06:35.91 But Jesus does not answer. 00:06:35.92\00:06:38.15 And Pilate is surprised, "Why don't you respond?" 00:06:38.16\00:06:42.37 in verse 18. 00:06:42.38\00:06:43.94 "Do you see how many people are testifying against you?" 00:06:43.95\00:06:46.45 So, Glenn, what's going on? 00:06:46.46\00:06:48.19 It's interesting, Pilate is trying to get at the truth, 00:06:48.20\00:06:51.34 but Jesus is not speaking here. 00:06:51.35\00:06:55.93 And really, we are just focusing here 00:06:55.94\00:06:58.97 on the account in Matthew, 00:06:58.98\00:07:01.05 but we when we look-- when we read also John, 00:07:01.06\00:07:03.83 because John was evidently present there and also Luke, 00:07:03.84\00:07:08.22 we see many, many more details. 00:07:08.23\00:07:11.06 Actually, Pilate was making every effort 00:07:11.07\00:07:17.91 to appeal to the emotions, 00:07:17.92\00:07:21.11 to the feelings of the people, to their senses, 00:07:21.12\00:07:23.41 that they were doing wrong 00:07:23.42\00:07:25.30 but actually nothing, nothing helped. 00:07:25.31\00:07:27.69 Finally, what he did according to other gospels, 00:07:27.70\00:07:29.75 he scourged Jesus. 00:07:29.76\00:07:31.30 We'll talk about scourging little bit later. 00:07:31.31\00:07:33.24 But finally he decided to make a final move 00:07:33.25\00:07:39.77 and very important act. 00:07:39.78\00:07:42.42 And what was that, Glenn, please would you read 00:07:42.43\00:07:48.70 from verse 18 to verse 25--to 26. 00:07:48.71\00:07:56.65 And I might now add that Jesus 00:07:56.66\00:07:58.62 did have a conversation with Pilate. 00:07:58.63\00:08:00.33 We see through the other gospels, 00:08:00.34\00:08:02.05 in which He is really reaching out to him. 00:08:02.06\00:08:06.12 The one who is--he thinks he holds Jesus life in his hand, 00:08:06.13\00:08:10.42 Jesus says, no, you don't. 00:08:10.43\00:08:11.53 Actually, there're many things. 00:08:11.54\00:08:12.96 When we read the gospel of Luke, 00:08:12.97\00:08:14.57 there're two trials before Herod-- 00:08:14.58\00:08:16.73 before Pilate, Pilate did not want to be involved-- 00:08:16.74\00:08:20.80 He's looking for a way out. 00:08:20.81\00:08:21.80 He sent him to Herod Antipas who was at that time 00:08:21.81\00:08:24.54 in Jerusalem for the festival. 00:08:24.55\00:08:26.68 So Antipas send Jesus back to Pilate. 00:08:26.69\00:08:29.72 I mean, we see that Pilate had great struggles 00:08:29.73\00:08:34.35 within himself. 00:08:34.36\00:08:35.36 He did not want to do-- that cruel man 00:08:35.37\00:08:37.93 who crucified so many people, killed them, 00:08:37.94\00:08:40.00 many innocent people. 00:08:40.01\00:08:41.97 He now tried to save people. 00:08:41.98\00:08:43.69 And now he is moving to the final act 00:08:43.70\00:08:45.21 and it's from verse 20. 00:08:45.22\00:08:47.37 He finally figures the way out. Yeah. 00:08:47.38\00:08:49.71 And it says, "Now at the feast the governor 00:08:49.72\00:08:52.00 was accustomed to release to the crowd 00:08:52.01\00:08:56.05 one prisoner whom they wanted. 00:08:56.06\00:08:57.57 And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas." 00:08:57.58\00:09:01.45 Is that the only way that he's known, Ranko? 00:09:01.46\00:09:03.69 Barabbas, we have that name here. 00:09:03.70\00:09:06.96 I would state it after the text. 00:09:06.97\00:09:09.15 Sorry, sorry. 00:09:09.16\00:09:10.31 "And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 00:09:10.32\00:09:13.90 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to him, 00:09:13.91\00:09:16.88 'Whom do you want me to release for you, Barabbas 00:09:16.89\00:09:19.82 or Jesus who's called the Christ?' 00:09:19.83\00:09:22.20 " So he gives them the choice, 00:09:22.21\00:09:23.22 "Who do you want me to release?" 00:09:23.23\00:09:24.85 "For he knew that it was out of envy 00:09:24.86\00:09:26.62 that they had delivered him up. 00:09:26.63\00:09:27.70 Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, 00:09:27.71\00:09:29.87 his wife sent word to him, 'Have nothing to do with 00:09:29.88\00:09:32.70 that righteous man, for I have had suffered 00:09:32.71\00:09:34.91 much over him today in a dream.' 00:09:34.92\00:09:36.77 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded 00:09:36.78\00:09:38.86 the people to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 00:09:38.87\00:09:42.31 The governor asked again, "Which of the two 00:09:42.32\00:09:45.56 do you want me to release to you?" 00:09:45.57\00:09:47.43 And they said, 'Barabbas.' 00:09:47.44\00:09:48.64 Pilate said to them, 'Then what shall I do 00:09:48.65\00:09:50.81 with Jesus who is called the Christ? 00:09:50.82\00:09:52.36 And they said, 'Let him be crucified!' 00:09:52.37\00:09:54.71 And he said, 'Why, what evil has he done?' 00:09:54.72\00:09:58.51 They shouted all the more, 'Let him be crucified!' 00:09:58.52\00:10:01.14 'Let him be crucified!'" 00:10:01.15\00:10:02.77 Can you imagine what's going on? 00:10:04.72\00:10:07.26 All demonic forces are stirring up people to do it. 00:10:07.27\00:10:10.89 But Pilate wants to do something. 00:10:10.90\00:10:13.48 Can you imagine that cruel man, 00:10:13.49\00:10:15.29 try to appeal to their emotions and to their feelings? 00:10:15.30\00:10:18.56 So what does he do? 00:10:18.57\00:10:20.81 He brings another prisoner and his name is Barabbas. 00:10:20.82\00:10:25.61 What is the meaning of the name Barabbas? 00:10:25.62\00:10:27.59 It's Aramaic. 00:10:27.60\00:10:29.23 Bar, it means the son, and Abba father, 00:10:29.24\00:10:33.25 son of the father, he puts in there. 00:10:33.26\00:10:36.28 By the way, we have some ancient versions 00:10:36.29\00:10:40.98 of the New Testament translate into Syriac and Coptic language. 00:10:40.99\00:10:45.82 Actually they have something very interesting there. 00:10:45.83\00:10:48.10 They state that Barabbas name was actually Yeshua, 00:10:48.11\00:10:53.86 which is Jesus. 00:10:53.87\00:10:55.57 So his name was Jesus Barabbas. 00:10:55.58\00:10:58.86 So they're left with a clear choice 00:10:58.87\00:11:00.74 between these two individuals. 00:11:00.75\00:11:01.88 We really have to explain who Barabbas was. 00:11:01.89\00:11:04.32 We know that he was probably like that man 00:11:04.33\00:11:08.81 who beat, and you know, harmed that person 00:11:08.82\00:11:14.05 in the parable of the good Samaritan. 00:11:14.06\00:11:17.29 They were robbers. They are bandits there. 00:11:17.30\00:11:20.31 They put all people in terror everywhere 00:11:20.32\00:11:25.03 and he was sentenced to death 00:11:25.04\00:11:27.59 and Pilate said, let me put that man, 00:11:27.60\00:11:30.41 the people would not choose him because they knew 00:11:30.42\00:11:32.65 how much they suffered because of him. 00:11:32.66\00:11:35.09 I will by this way I will save Jesus Christ. 00:11:35.10\00:11:38.75 But amazingly and here comes the moment. 00:11:38.76\00:11:41.68 Can you imagine, Pilate stands there 00:11:41.69\00:11:45.28 and he says "Do you want me 00:11:45.29\00:11:47.35 to release to you Jesus the Messiah?" 00:11:47.36\00:11:51.37 You're waiting for him or Jesus Barabbas. 00:11:51.38\00:11:57.04 And what was the decision that people made? 00:11:57.05\00:11:59.14 And it's very clear that Pilate knew 00:11:59.15\00:12:01.56 that Jesus was innocent, and so did the crowd 00:12:01.57\00:12:03.95 and so did the priest. 00:12:03.96\00:12:05.72 And yet, as you said, the devil stirs them up. 00:12:05.73\00:12:08.45 Give us Jesus Barabbas. 00:12:08.46\00:12:10.09 What shall I do with Jesus the Messiah, crucify Him? 00:12:10.10\00:12:13.35 Why? 00:12:13.36\00:12:14.35 There is no answer, there is no reason, 00:12:14.36\00:12:16.20 crucify Him, crucify Him, 00:12:16.21\00:12:18.37 His blood upon us and our children. 00:12:18.38\00:12:22.30 What is going on? 00:12:22.31\00:12:23.82 I would like to say to the viewers, 00:12:23.83\00:12:30.16 2,000 years ago, the Jewish leaders, 00:12:30.17\00:12:32.81 they had to make decision. 00:12:32.82\00:12:35.20 Jesus Barabbas or Jesus called Christ. 00:12:35.21\00:12:39.61 Today we face the same decision. 00:12:39.62\00:12:44.13 Are we going to accept Jesus Christ 00:12:44.14\00:12:47.22 as our personal savior? 00:12:47.23\00:12:48.69 Choice is our. 00:12:48.70\00:12:50.37
