Welcome to the Books of the Books series here on 3ABN. 00:00:20.25\00:00:23.73 I'm Glenn Russell professor of religion 00:00:23.74\00:00:25.64 Andrews University here with friend and scholar, 00:00:25.65\00:00:29.22 colleague, Dr. Ranko Stefanovich. 00:00:29.23\00:00:31.79 Ranko you teach at the theological seminary. 00:00:31.80\00:00:34.42 I'm an under grad teacher 00:00:34.43\00:00:35.69 but we had some good years of teaching 00:00:35.70\00:00:37.64 together in the religion department. 00:00:37.65\00:00:40.01 Ranko, we're exploring this Book of Mathew. 00:00:40.02\00:00:42.79 We've come to these powerful chapters 00:00:42.80\00:00:46.12 and I just have to say for both of us 00:00:46.13\00:00:48.46 as we're exploring this you just kind of feel 00:00:48.47\00:00:51.56 human language isn't adequate. 00:00:51.57\00:00:53.19 It filled us with awe and also trembling 00:00:53.20\00:00:57.89 because we are dealing something I'm afraid 00:00:57.90\00:01:01.71 we are not able to understand completely. 00:01:01.72\00:01:04.07 These are sacred passages. All of scripture 00:01:04.08\00:01:06.60 is and these just bring us to the very heart of God 00:01:06.61\00:01:09.81 as we see Jesus. 00:01:09.82\00:01:11.08 In the book of Desire of Ages, 00:01:11.09\00:01:12.54 actually we read that this is a subject 00:01:12.55\00:01:15.28 we'll try to understand through all eternity. 00:01:15.29\00:01:17.72 -Yes. -So who are we now that-- 00:01:17.73\00:01:19.88 Well, let's try to understand little bit more of it today 00:01:19.89\00:01:23.04 and let's enter into prayer 00:01:23.05\00:01:24.84 that God can help us in that process. 00:01:24.85\00:01:27.63 Lord, we--we recognize our short comings, 00:01:27.64\00:01:31.56 our inability to grasp the infinite love 00:01:31.57\00:01:35.49 of Your Son Jesus Christ. 00:01:35.50\00:01:37.53 But we pray that the person the Holy Spirit will be with us. 00:01:37.54\00:01:40.88 May we be drawn to you through the study of Your word. 00:01:40.89\00:01:44.83 We know that you've given us scriptures, 00:01:44.84\00:01:46.65 so that we cannot just argue about it or debate, 00:01:46.66\00:01:49.97 but actually be drawn to you to commit our lives 00:01:49.98\00:01:52.85 to you as our Savior, to be faithful to you. 00:01:52.86\00:01:55.92 May that be our experience in Jesus name we pray, amen. 00:01:55.93\00:02:00.64 Now we have seen the journey of Jesus to the cross, 00:02:00.65\00:02:05.86 He's come through the Lord's supper experience. 00:02:05.87\00:02:09.27 We've seen Him in the garden and that that momentous struggle 00:02:09.28\00:02:14.71 with the fate of humanity hanging in the balance 00:02:14.72\00:02:18.10 and Jesus surrenders His life, His will to the cross. 00:02:18.11\00:02:23.38 Coming out of that experience 00:02:23.39\00:02:26.60 we find the attack of the mob with Judas. 00:02:26.61\00:02:30.77 I'm marvel--you know, it's just a small point here, 00:02:30.78\00:02:33.59 but when Judas comes and kisses him 00:02:33.60\00:02:35.75 and Jesus says to him, "friend." 00:02:35.76\00:02:38.17 I mean, what forgiving, you know, Judas has gone too far. 00:02:38.18\00:02:42.00 The devil has come in to him as the scripture said, 00:02:42.01\00:02:44.02 but Jesus still doesn't brush him aside. 00:02:44.03\00:02:46.38 Now we come down to the arrest and trials of Jesus. 00:02:46.39\00:02:50.63 May I pick up Mathew Chapter 26 00:02:50.64\00:02:53.34 starting with verse 57. -Please. 00:02:53.35\00:02:56.16 "Then those who had seized Jesus 00:02:56.17\00:02:57.58 led him to Caiaphas the high priest, 00:02:57.59\00:03:00.73 where the scribes and the elders had gathered." 00:03:00.74\00:03:02.84 And may be should pause right here, Ranko. 00:03:02.85\00:03:06.23 People might get confused, 'cause it 00:03:06.24\00:03:07.45 mentions a couple of priests, Who were they? Caiaphas, 00:03:07.46\00:03:10.32 Annas, and so forth. 00:03:10.33\00:03:13.14 Among the Jewish people, there was always a high priest. 00:03:13.15\00:03:17.79 But in the first century as Palestine the Jews 00:03:17.80\00:03:22.70 were under the Roman occupation, 00:03:22.71\00:03:25.82 the priest was not only a religious figure. 00:03:25.83\00:03:29.66 Do you remember we talk about the Sadducees? 00:03:29.67\00:03:31.84 Sadducees also claim political power, 00:03:31.85\00:03:35.48 so the high priest was also the president 00:03:35.49\00:03:40.76 of the Jewish parliament of that time 00:03:40.77\00:03:43.92 known as the Sanhedrin. 00:03:43.93\00:03:45.87 You noticed in the text it says that they took him 00:03:45.88\00:03:49.65 to the house of Caiaphas were the scribes 00:03:49.66\00:03:52.81 and the elders were gathered together. 00:03:52.82\00:03:55.46 Sanhedrin comes from Greek, it means 70. 00:03:55.47\00:03:59.60 So Caiaphas is the high priest. His father in law is Annas. 00:03:59.61\00:04:04.70 Is Annas--actually he retired. -Yes. 00:04:04.71\00:04:07.60 So he was not official the high priest, 00:04:07.61\00:04:09.96 but you know, when you have a person 00:04:09.97\00:04:11.52 who is the high priest and political Jewish leader 00:04:11.53\00:04:15.34 I mean, for a long time he had a great impact 00:04:15.35\00:04:20.01 and influence on people. 00:04:20.02\00:04:22.32 You see, we are not talking about modern times 00:04:22.33\00:04:24.42 where person is the president, 00:04:24.43\00:04:25.72 after that, he does not have the any authoritative power. 00:04:25.73\00:04:29.84 Those ancient times you had authoritative power 00:04:29.85\00:04:33.85 as long as you live. 00:04:33.86\00:04:36.19 -The influence is still there. -Yes. 00:04:36.20\00:04:37.86 Let's pick it up now with verse 58. 00:04:37.87\00:04:39.63 "But Peter followed him at a distance 00:04:39.64\00:04:41.40 as far as the courtyard of the high priest, 00:04:41.41\00:04:43.86 and going inside he set with the guards to see the end. 00:04:43.87\00:04:47.41 Now the chief priests, and the whole council 00:04:47.42\00:04:48.99 sought false testimony against Jesus, 00:04:49.00\00:04:51.29 that they might put him to death." 00:04:51.30\00:04:52.81 What are we seeing so far? 00:04:52.82\00:04:54.47 The trial is getting set up, 00:04:54.48\00:04:56.36 but they're not seeking truth, aren't they? 00:04:56.37\00:04:58.00 No, Sanhedrin would take place in the temple-- 00:04:58.01\00:05:04.36 And again remind us the Sanhedrin 00:05:04.37\00:05:06.63 is kind of the combination of the church headquarters and-- 00:05:06.64\00:05:12.42 -And political power. -The Supreme Court. 00:05:12.43\00:05:18.30 But very often we have Jewish sources indicate 00:05:18.31\00:05:22.53 that very often Sanhedrin could have a meeting 00:05:22.54\00:05:26.89 in the house of the high priest. 00:05:26.90\00:05:29.85 If we go to Israel today, 00:05:29.86\00:05:32.87 there is a traditional house of high priest 00:05:32.88\00:05:36.73 and we have a many, many evidences 00:05:36.74\00:05:39.35 that really this could be that real house of the high priest 00:05:39.36\00:05:43.46 and this is true then you go, 00:05:43.47\00:05:44.83 Glenn, I don't know if you visit at their place, 00:05:44.84\00:05:46.59 you go there to the basement. 00:05:46.60\00:05:48.31 By the way there is still original stairways 00:05:48.32\00:05:50.79 leading to Caiaphas house that are from the first century. 00:05:50.80\00:05:54.15 Glenn, when you are there, then you understand 00:05:54.16\00:05:55.94 if this is really Caiaphas house this were the stairways 00:05:55.95\00:05:58.93 by which Jesus climbed as He was taken to Caiaphas house 00:05:58.94\00:06:03.10 and that basement was the place were Jesus was held. 00:06:03.11\00:06:07.24 You know, they took Him probably about midnight 00:06:07.25\00:06:10.67 or maybe 2 in the morning 00:06:10.68\00:06:13.54 Sanhedrin met early in the morning, 00:06:13.55\00:06:16.48 so Jesus for few hours was locked there 00:06:16.49\00:06:19.89 in the basement of Caiaphas house, 00:06:19.90\00:06:22.23 but just to mention one more detail is 00:06:22.24\00:06:25.02 Sanhedrin had the meeting. 00:06:25.03\00:06:26.67 Why did they have that meeting during the night? 00:06:26.68\00:06:29.31 Because they did an illegal act. 00:06:29.32\00:06:32.14 Sanhedrin, we said, it was the Supreme Court, 00:06:32.15\00:06:37.09 but really they did not have any judicial power and authority. 00:06:37.10\00:06:43.04 They couldn't examine the person, 00:06:43.05\00:06:46.32 present the accusations, 00:06:46.33\00:06:48.22 but it's the Roman authority, the procurator 00:06:48.23\00:06:50.92 at that time was Pilate, 00:06:50.93\00:06:52.50 he could really accept or reject those accusations 00:06:52.51\00:06:56.84 and only the Roman authority, 00:06:56.85\00:06:59.43 the procurator could sentence somebody to death, 00:06:59.44\00:07:02.72 so they were aware of that. 00:07:02.73\00:07:04.35 But they wanted to do something more, 00:07:04.36\00:07:05.99 that's why they decided to make 00:07:06.00\00:07:07.43 an illegal trial during the night. 00:07:07.44\00:07:11.04 And we'll see that they're dependent on the Romans 00:07:11.05\00:07:13.43 as you said for the death penalty 00:07:13.44\00:07:15.42 and they've got to find some charges 00:07:15.43\00:07:16.89 that the Romans will accept. -But what charges? 00:07:16.90\00:07:19.64 They've got religious issues here, 00:07:19.65\00:07:21.06 but it'll change and they'll become 00:07:21.07\00:07:22.64 more political in their refinement. 00:07:22.65\00:07:25.01 Now we understand why they tempted Jesus with the taxes. 00:07:25.02\00:07:28.13 Can you imagine if Jesus failed with that--boy, it's enough 00:07:28.14\00:07:31.93 just to go to Pilate and say, you see this is the person 00:07:31.94\00:07:34.69 we selected the people or refused to pay taxes, 00:07:34.70\00:07:37.90 that was enough to be crucified. 00:07:37.91\00:07:40.21 But they did not have anything. 00:07:40.22\00:07:43.00 Now these steps that you mentioned, Peter followed them 00:07:43.01\00:07:46.66 also a bit behind Jesus. What happens in his story? 00:07:46.67\00:07:52.07 So you have two part of the play. 00:07:53.99\00:07:58.60 They're in the courtyard. 00:07:58.61\00:08:01.41 They're bringing all those false witnesses 00:08:01.42\00:08:03.58 as we are reading in the text, all accusations. 00:08:03.59\00:08:06.05 They could not really find any charges against Jesus. 00:08:06.06\00:08:09.55 They could say, you know, He was teaching, 00:08:09.56\00:08:12.34 He is selecting people against our traditions et cetera. 00:08:12.35\00:08:16.25 But the Romans authorities would not by, 00:08:16.26\00:08:18.20 they say this is your private matter. 00:08:18.21\00:08:20.85 Let's read what the text says 00:08:20.86\00:08:22.34 here in verse 59 just on that point. 00:08:22.35\00:08:24.64 "Now the chief priest and the whole council 00:08:24.65\00:08:26.23 sought false witnesses against Jesus, 00:08:26.24\00:08:28.77 that they might put him to death, 00:08:28.78\00:08:30.24 but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward." 00:08:30.25\00:08:33.42 So people were coming making up things, 00:08:33.43\00:08:35.20 but they had to find someone who had just the right point. 00:08:35.21\00:08:37.24 They could not. 00:08:37.25\00:08:38.76 Actually Jesus provided the point to them 00:08:38.77\00:08:42.92 after everything, you know, then the high priest says, 00:08:42.93\00:08:45.38 boy, you are not responding. 00:08:45.39\00:08:47.72 Why would Jesus respond? There was nothing true. 00:08:47.73\00:08:50.07 And then Jesus made that statement in verse 64, 00:08:50.08\00:08:52.92 Glenn, can you read it? -All right. 00:08:52.93\00:08:54.72 "And Jesus said to him, 'You have said so,'" 00:08:54.73\00:08:57.25 because the question came, "'Are you the Messiah?' 00:08:57.26\00:08:59.80 'You have said so, but I tell you, 00:08:59.81\00:09:01.54 hereafter, you will see the son of man 00:09:01.55\00:09:03.34 seated at the right hand of power 00:09:03.35\00:09:05.39 and coming in the clouds of heaven.'" 00:09:05.40\00:09:06.78 -What did high priest do? -Oh, boy. 00:09:06.79\00:09:09.11 "Then the high priest tore his robes and said, 00:09:09.12\00:09:12.11 'He has uttered blasphemy. 00:09:12.12\00:09:13.70 Why do we still need witnesses? You have heard his blasphemy.'" 00:09:13.71\00:09:16.41 So two things they now found. 00:09:16.42\00:09:17.95 You see, we as a nation chosen by God, 00:09:17.96\00:09:23.68 we have now clear evidence that He's doing blasphemy, 00:09:23.69\00:09:27.77 because he is claiming that he would come 00:09:27.78\00:09:32.00 at the right hand of the power. 00:09:32.01\00:09:33.31 What did they refer to, to Daniel Chapter 7, 00:09:33.32\00:09:35.78 we know that in Jewish writings, Daniel Chapter 7, 00:09:35.79\00:09:38.73 when you have one like a son of man 00:09:38.74\00:09:41.11 coming before God there and to him 00:09:41.12\00:09:44.08 was given all the power and the authority. 00:09:44.09\00:09:47.81 So they said, you see, Jesus claimed to be 00:09:47.82\00:09:50.66 that son of man of Daniel Chapter 3 00:09:50.67\00:09:54.30 which was actually the messianic figure with that. 00:09:54.31\00:09:57.36 But second thing is when you claim to sit 00:09:57.37\00:10:00.54 at the right hand of the power, 00:10:00.55\00:10:03.30 it means you claim to be that Messiah 00:10:03.31\00:10:05.59 who would sit on the throne of David 00:10:05.60\00:10:08.34 and they had the arguments to accuse Jesus that actually 00:10:08.35\00:10:11.50 He was that usurper who wanted to claim that power for himself 00:10:11.51\00:10:16.01 to establish that kingdom, 00:10:16.02\00:10:17.96 in other words to rebel against Romans. 00:10:17.97\00:10:20.11 So we have here two clear points what they try to do with Jesus. 00:10:20.12\00:10:25.21 And of course, they turn against Him and the high priest 00:10:25.22\00:10:29.11 in a mocking sense of purity tears his robes. 00:10:29.12\00:10:33.28 And they spit and they slap him 00:10:33.29\00:10:35.53 and say, "Prophesy against you" and so forth. 00:10:35.54\00:10:37.54 But that was not hard for Jesus. 00:10:37.55\00:10:39.70 He counted on that. 00:10:39.71\00:10:41.13 He made decision in Garden Gethsemane. 00:10:41.14\00:10:43.01 But actually, there was a significant hate that came, 00:10:43.02\00:10:50.08 not from those people. 00:10:50.09\00:10:52.79 It's from Jesus beloved disciple by name of Peter. 00:10:52.80\00:10:56.04 Glenn, can you just reflect that? 00:10:56.05\00:10:57.38 "Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard 00:10:57.39\00:10:59.25 and maid came to him and said, 00:10:59.26\00:11:00.53 'You also were with Jesus, the Galileans.'" 00:11:00.54\00:11:02.62 Now Galileans were known for their language. 00:11:02.63\00:11:05.91 The Galileans were not the most sophisticated 00:11:05.92\00:11:08.66 and she's picked up some accent and she senses 00:11:08.67\00:11:11.68 who he is and she perhaps recognizes him. 00:11:11.69\00:11:14.56 Like people recognize me, as soon as I'm talking to people 00:11:14.57\00:11:17.35 they recognize me where I am from, yeah. 00:11:17.36\00:11:19.51 This man was with Jesus of Nazareth. 00:11:19.52\00:11:21.44 And he denies that and now there's with an oath, 00:11:21.45\00:11:23.82 and he says no and after a little while more, came up 00:11:23.83\00:11:27.03 and said the same and then it says in verse 74, 00:11:27.04\00:11:31.79 "Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, 00:11:31.80\00:11:34.81 'I do not know the man.' And immediately the cock crowed. 00:11:34.82\00:11:38.15 and Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, 00:11:38.16\00:11:40.20 before the cock crews, you will deny me three times 00:11:40.21\00:11:42.65 and he went out, and wept bitterly." 00:11:42.66\00:11:44.93 Glenn, I would like to read another text, 00:11:44.94\00:11:47.46 very close to that. 00:11:47.47\00:11:49.55 If you can read verse 00:11:49.56\00:11:53.62 three to six of the next chapter 27. 00:11:53.63\00:12:00.84 "When Judas, his betrayer, saw that He was condemned, 00:12:01.84\00:12:04.52 he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver 00:12:04.53\00:12:08.05 to the chief priest and the elders. 00:12:08.06\00:12:10.02 Saying, 'I have sinned and betraying innocent blood.' 00:12:10.03\00:12:12.99 And they said, 'What is that to us? 00:12:13.00\00:12:14.61 See to it yourself.' 00:12:14.62\00:12:16.12 And throwing down the pieces of sliver 00:12:16.13\00:12:17.68 in the temple he departed, 00:12:17.69\00:12:19.00 and he went and hanged himself. 00:12:19.01\00:12:20.87 But the chief priest taking the pieces of sliver said, 00:12:20.88\00:12:23.89 'It is not lawful to put them into the treasure, 00:12:23.90\00:12:25.90 for they are blood money.'" 00:12:25.91\00:12:27.22 And then they go out and buy the potter's field. 00:12:27.23\00:12:29.35 So who of these two had committed more terrible sin? 00:12:29.36\00:12:35.49 There is a lot of similarities between Peter and Judas 00:12:35.50\00:12:37.72 both were disciples, both had every opportunity 00:12:37.73\00:12:40.45 to hear Jesus preach, 00:12:40.46\00:12:41.80 both had been sent out as missionaries. 00:12:41.81\00:12:44.16 Both had seen the miracles of Jesus, 00:12:44.17\00:12:46.26 but their experience is different. 00:12:46.27\00:12:47.77 But can you imagine Peter three times swearing, 00:12:47.78\00:12:52.41 using oath, I do not know Him. 00:12:52.42\00:12:55.63 When we are talking about the greatness of sin, 00:12:55.64\00:13:00.59 I don't see the difference, but that there is a difference. 00:13:00.60\00:13:05.59 What Peter did was because of the fear, 00:13:05.60\00:13:09.57 of the weakness of his flesh. 00:13:09.58\00:13:11.18 You know, Peter was always fast to talk 00:13:11.19\00:13:13.78 and after that he will start thinking about 00:13:13.79\00:13:15.85 what he was talking, so it was his-- 00:13:15.86\00:13:19.90 with Peter there was not impulse weakness at a moment. 00:13:19.91\00:13:24.65 Actually, it was something that, that not Peter sorry Judas, 00:13:24.66\00:13:29.60 the Judas was something building, 00:13:29.61\00:13:31.35 building his character from the very beginning 00:13:31.36\00:13:33.77 when he joined to Jesus. 00:13:33.78\00:13:35.49 So there's a calculated resistance 00:13:35.50\00:13:37.47 rather than a weakness of the flesh. 00:13:37.48\00:13:39.41 And you see that, but still there was 00:13:39.42\00:13:41.72 an opportunity for Judas to repent. 00:13:41.73\00:13:43.86 Do you remember Jesus called him "friend"? 00:13:43.87\00:13:46.60 -Friend. -What is the difference? 00:13:46.61\00:13:48.82 The difference is that Peter repented genuinely 00:13:48.83\00:13:55.42 and we know that he was forgiven. 00:13:55.43\00:13:58.64 Judas, he repented but that was never, 00:13:58.65\00:14:01.47 never genuine, genuine repentance. 00:14:01.48\00:14:04.71 And we see that Jesus looked at Peter 00:14:04.72\00:14:06.79 and loved him and he must have felt such disappointment 00:14:06.80\00:14:11.43 and yet He looks in love at Peter. 00:14:11.44\00:14:13.05 And this is what drove Peter out into the darkness 00:14:13.06\00:14:15.79 to weep and to cry, but let's remember 00:14:15.80\00:14:17.64 that Peter has that repentance experience 00:14:17.65\00:14:20.62 and Jesus had prophesied. He said "when you fall, 00:14:20.63\00:14:24.43 when you come back, I'll restore you to brethren." 00:14:24.44\00:14:27.24 Jesus had already said that He'll be with Peter. 00:14:27.25\00:14:30.13 So remember you may have stumbled 00:14:30.14\00:14:31.58 and fallen a little bit like Peter, 00:14:31.59\00:14:33.45 but your Savior will still be with you. 00:14:33.46\00:14:34.98 We're gonna explore this a little bit more 00:14:34.99\00:14:36.42 right after our break, we'll be right back. 00:14:36.43\00:14:38.64
