Welcome back, we're here in Hebrews chapter 5, verse 7, 00:00:01.01\00:00:05.80 "In the days of His flesh, Jesus offered up prayers 00:00:05.81\00:00:08.48 and supplications with loud cries and tears 00:00:08.49\00:00:12.34 to him who was able to save Him from death, 00:00:12.35\00:00:14.99 and He was heard for His godly fear." 00:00:15.00\00:00:17.08 Glenn, we have here a few details 00:00:19.46\00:00:22.63 that we have to keep in mind in order to understand 00:00:22.64\00:00:25.48 what was going on in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:00:25.49\00:00:27.79 So we already noticed that gospel says 00:00:27.80\00:00:32.06 that Jesus went about stones throw-- 00:00:32.07\00:00:35.05 at least one hundred yards, it's during the night 00:00:35.06\00:00:39.88 but the disciples were able clearly to hear Jesus 00:00:39.89\00:00:45.07 praying and the words of that prayer. 00:00:45.08\00:00:50.03 Hebrews says, thatJesus was praying with the loud crying. 00:00:50.04\00:00:56.09 We don't here an ordinary prayer of Jesus, you know, 00:00:56.10\00:00:58.83 "Father be with me," falling down on the ground. 00:00:58.84\00:01:02.24 It was a cry of agony it was aloud cry. 00:01:02.25\00:01:05.86 So, Glenn, what was going on here in the scene? 00:01:05.87\00:01:08.92 Because this is the crucial issue of His whole life, 00:01:08.93\00:01:11.60 His whole ministry and all of human history. 00:01:11.61\00:01:15.37 This is where Jesus has to face the fact 00:01:15.38\00:01:19.99 that he cannot be the messiah without the cross. 00:01:20.00\00:01:23.95 But can you realize something? 00:01:23.96\00:01:25.35 You know, as we were going through the life of Jesus 00:01:25.36\00:01:27.57 in the gospel of Mathew, we see a constant effort of Satan 00:01:27.58\00:01:32.26 to prevent Jesus to go there to the cross. 00:01:32.27\00:01:36.52 But now in the Garden of Gethsemane, 00:01:36.53\00:01:39.75 evidently Satan with all his army is there. 00:01:39.76\00:01:44.68 We are here dealing with a most decisive battle, 00:01:44.69\00:01:49.64 or actually point of the battle, that great controversy. 00:01:49.65\00:01:54.21 The most decisive moment has come and no wonder, 00:01:54.22\00:01:58.69 can you imagine that pressure on Jesus 00:01:58.70\00:02:01.42 knowing the Satan is there. 00:02:01.43\00:02:03.44 The demonic forces are there 00:02:03.45\00:02:05.09 and there is Satan almost invisible form there, 00:02:05.10\00:02:08.64 picking up on Jesus. 00:02:08.65\00:02:09.86 By the way I will really like this moment to read 00:02:09.87\00:02:14.37 a statement that made great impact on me from the book, 00:02:14.38\00:02:17.86 "Desire of Ages" page 690. 00:02:17.87\00:02:21.57 It says, "Jesus was praying in agony. 00:02:21.58\00:02:25.48 The faith of humanity trembled in the balance. 00:02:25.49\00:02:29.49 Christ might even now 00:02:29.50\00:02:31.62 refuse to drink the cup apportioned to guilty man. 00:02:31.63\00:02:36.34 It was not yet too late. 00:02:36.35\00:02:38.59 He might wipe the bloody sweat from His brow, 00:02:38.60\00:02:41.87 and leave man to perish in his iniquity. 00:02:41.88\00:02:44.66 He might say, let the transgressor 00:02:44.67\00:02:46.68 receive the penalty of his sin, and I will go back to My Father. 00:02:46.69\00:02:51.93 Will the Son of God drink 00:02:51.94\00:02:53.70 the bitter cup of humiliation and agony? 00:02:53.71\00:02:56.55 Will the innocent suffer the consequences 00:02:56.56\00:02:59.09 of the curse of sin, to save the guilty? 00:02:59.10\00:03:02.64 The words fall tremblingly from the pale lips of Jesus, 00:03:02.65\00:03:07.15 'O My Father, if this cup may not pass away from Me, 00:03:07.16\00:03:14.31 except I drink it, Thy will be done.'" 00:03:14.32\00:03:20.44 I am sorry, Glenn, I cannot contemplate of everything 00:03:20.45\00:03:25.86 what was going on there in Garden of Gethsemane. 00:03:25.87\00:03:27.72 I have tears in my eyes. 00:03:27.73\00:03:29.72 That I cannot be grateful to my savior 00:03:29.73\00:03:32.41 what he put the stake there in order to save you and me. 00:03:32.42\00:03:37.01 We are talking about cross, 00:03:37.02\00:03:40.05 and rightly doing that, but Jesus agony on the cross 00:03:40.06\00:03:44.43 actually begin here in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:03:44.44\00:03:47.12 You cannot separate the two. 00:03:47.13\00:03:49.14 And this is the extension of that Philippian, chapter 2. 00:03:49.15\00:03:53.85 Philippians, chapter 2. That condescension. 00:03:53.86\00:03:56.08 He stepped down, he stepped down even to the death. 00:03:56.09\00:03:58.53 To the point of death. 00:03:58.54\00:03:59.58 And we see the beginning of the separation. 00:03:59.59\00:04:02.17 It will come to its fullness on the cross. 00:04:02.18\00:04:04.52 But he is being pulled away from his father 00:04:04.53\00:04:07.15 as he bears our sins. 00:04:07.16\00:04:08.79 You know then people talk about Garden of Gethsemane 00:04:08.80\00:04:11.26 they said, you know, "Jesus was God of course, 00:04:11.27\00:04:13.56 He knew that the grave could not hold him." 00:04:13.57\00:04:16.92 But keep in mind here we have a clear 00:04:16.93\00:04:20.66 that human aspect of Jesus, you know, 00:04:20.67\00:04:24.78 I wanted at this point to say something to the viewers 00:04:24.79\00:04:28.88 and among the Christians there is a belief 00:04:28.89\00:04:32.57 that death is actually nothing terrible to be afraid of. 00:04:32.58\00:04:36.52 The death is simply transition from this life 00:04:36.53\00:04:39.59 into that next life to go when human soul leaves the body 00:04:39.60\00:04:44.17 and you know human beings they continue to live. 00:04:44.18\00:04:48.32 Actually Swiss scholar Oscar Cullman, 00:04:48.33\00:04:53.87 he wrote a book on immortality of the soul 00:04:53.88\00:04:56.54 and he uses the situation of Jesus. 00:04:56.55\00:04:59.18 And he says, if death is really nothing terrible, 00:04:59.19\00:05:02.86 it's just transition from this life into the next one, 00:05:02.87\00:05:06.54 then why was Jesus so much afraid of death? 00:05:06.55\00:05:10.79 Much afraid to die? He is telling that the death, 00:05:10.80\00:05:15.39 actually death, is an enemy of the human race. 00:05:15.40\00:05:20.46 The biblical teaching of death is it is the enemy. 00:05:20.47\00:05:24.20 And we cannot take death lightly. 00:05:24.21\00:05:26.21 By the way there is only one instance that Jesus, 00:05:26.22\00:05:30.55 actually two instances, that Jesus cried. 00:05:30.56\00:05:33.94 One when Lazarus died, and second one 00:05:33.95\00:05:37.45 at the destiny of Jerusalem 00:05:37.46\00:05:40.82 what was supposed to happen to them it's again over death. 00:05:40.83\00:05:44.72 The only, the only instances. 00:05:44.73\00:05:47.08 So death is an enemy of the human race 00:05:47.09\00:05:51.10 but there is another point is, 00:05:51.11\00:05:53.12 but the death is a conquered enemy. 00:05:53.13\00:05:58.54 Because God himself, by becoming human being, 00:05:58.55\00:06:03.32 went through the experience of death. 00:06:03.33\00:06:06.33 And by his own death he defeated that enemy 00:06:06.34\00:06:10.45 so that you and me, we all, have that hope 00:06:10.46\00:06:14.63 that death is not the last word of the human race. 00:06:14.64\00:06:19.98 One day the last enemy will be defeated totally and completely 00:06:19.99\00:06:24.36 at the second coming of Jesus Christ. 00:06:24.37\00:06:27.99 That's what we see on this side. 00:06:28.00\00:06:29.84 But at that time He could not see 00:06:29.85\00:06:31.98 beyond the cross except by faith. 00:06:31.99\00:06:34.36 And the devil as you have said was pressing upon him 00:06:34.37\00:06:36.55 and saying look it's not worth it. Yeah. 00:06:36.56\00:06:39.20 It's not worth--why you gonna go through all this? 00:06:39.21\00:06:41.91 And you can imagine the devil saying something like, 00:06:41.92\00:06:43.80 "look, I sinned in heaven and I was cast out 00:06:43.81\00:06:46.79 and now you're gonna carry the sins of the world?" 00:06:46.80\00:06:49.31 Not only had that Satan pointed to him, 00:06:49.32\00:06:52.25 "you are dieing, for whom? 00:06:52.26\00:06:54.21 For those people just in few hours they will shout, 00:06:54.22\00:06:58.02 'crucify him, crucify him.' 00:06:58.03\00:06:59.68 You want to die for bunch of your disciples there? 00:06:59.69\00:07:02.94 They're sleeping they then do not care about you." 00:07:02.95\00:07:05.71 Jesus had all the reason to say to pack things seems 00:07:05.72\00:07:09.74 and go for journey to return where he came from. 00:07:09.75\00:07:14.58 But praise God, I'm moved with emotion, 00:07:14.59\00:07:20.40 he decided to go to cross because I was on his mind. 00:07:20.41\00:07:26.32 And dear viewers, you were on his mind. 00:07:26.33\00:07:29.44 He saw you and me that one day 00:07:29.45\00:07:34.04 we will accept that merits of his sacrifice. 00:07:34.05\00:07:37.43 We'll accept him as our personal savior. 00:07:37.44\00:07:42.14 And he made the decision, "I am going to the cross 00:07:42.15\00:07:46.08 to save those-- for human beings." 00:07:46.09\00:07:48.23 I know that he died for me. Glenn, He died for you. 00:07:48.24\00:07:51.91 He died for each one of us. It's love that compelled him. 00:07:51.92\00:07:54.81 It's the love. That's the only explanation. 00:07:54.82\00:07:58.07 And it was love that faced such loneliness. 00:07:58.08\00:08:00.18 He goes through this alone. Yes. 00:08:00.19\00:08:04.48 So Jesus made decision He came there 00:08:04.49\00:08:06.47 to his disciples over they're sleeping. 00:08:06.48\00:08:09.07 They don't understand what is going on 00:08:09.08\00:08:11.54 and dear viewers, while you are now watching this program 00:08:11.55\00:08:15.69 you'll just--watching this program and you look one 00:08:15.70\00:08:18.72 strange accent here and our human efforts to illustrate, 00:08:18.73\00:08:23.29 to explain what is written in the gospel of Mathew. 00:08:23.30\00:08:26.51 But as you're watching this program 00:08:26.52\00:08:28.83 you don't understand that 00:08:28.84\00:08:30.51 what is going on behind the scene. 00:08:30.52\00:08:32.57 There is a struggle for you soul. That's right. 00:08:32.58\00:08:34.92 There is Satan who like to destruct you. 00:08:34.93\00:08:37.39 What was going on there in Garden of Gethsemane. 00:08:37.40\00:08:40.76 It was just a part of that great controversy 00:08:40.77\00:08:44.68 that we still participant in that warfare. 00:08:44.69\00:08:48.10 And the surrender of Jesus' will is a critical point. 00:08:48.11\00:08:53.49 He had a choice to make 00:08:53.50\00:08:56.14 and he surrendered his will to the Father's will. 00:08:56.15\00:08:59.12 And so we each have a choice. Yes, to make. 00:08:59.13\00:09:02.48 We also, just like our savior, need to decide, 00:09:02.49\00:09:05.42 "will we surrender to God's will? 00:09:05.43\00:09:06.92 Will we give God our lives?" 00:09:06.93\00:09:08.61 And that's the point of Gethsemane. 00:09:08.62\00:09:10.80 I am so thankful for the Jesus lead the way. 00:09:10.81\00:09:13.13 I am so thankful of that my savior said, 00:09:13.14\00:09:15.02 "yes I will go." Not an easy thing. 00:09:15.03\00:09:18.58 History hung in the balance as you said. 00:09:18.59\00:09:22.01 This is a cosmic destiny. 00:09:22.02\00:09:25.54 But he makes a decision to be faithful to God, 00:09:25.55\00:09:28.41 to be faithful to his mission and his purpose. 00:09:28.42\00:09:30.59 He said," I came to seek and to save the lost." 00:09:30.60\00:09:34.48 So as Jesus was talking to his disciples. 00:09:34.49\00:09:37.84 As they were trying to wake up He says "just look." 00:09:37.85\00:09:42.71 And suddenly, you know, it was very dark. 00:09:42.72\00:09:46.63 But suddenly lights appeared, who was coming? 00:09:46.64\00:09:49.88 May I read verse 47 as following? Please, Glenn. 00:09:49.89\00:09:52.47 "While He was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, 00:09:52.48\00:09:56.16 and with him great crowd with swords and clubs 00:09:56.17\00:09:58.95 from the chief priest and the elders of the people. 00:09:58.96\00:10:01.60 Now the betrayer had given them signs saying, 00:10:01.61\00:10:03.85 'the one I shall kiss is the man, cease him.' 00:10:03.86\00:10:07.65 And he came up to Jesus at once he said, 00:10:07.66\00:10:10.01 'hail master,' and he kissed him. 00:10:10.02\00:10:13.69 And Jesus said to him, 'friend, 00:10:13.70\00:10:17.90 why are you here? 00:10:17.91\00:10:19.93 'Then I came up and laid hands on Jesus he ceased them 00:10:19.94\00:10:22.48 and behold one of those who were with Jesus 00:10:22.49\00:10:25.54 stretched out his hand and drew his sword 00:10:25.55\00:10:27.75 and struck the slave of the high priest 00:10:27.76\00:10:30.00 and cut off his ear. 00:10:30.01\00:10:31.75 Jesus said to him, 'put your sword back in its place. 00:10:31.76\00:10:34.66 For all who have taken the sword will perish by the sword 00:10:34.67\00:10:37.29 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my father? 00:10:37.30\00:10:39.91 And he will at once send, 00:10:39.92\00:10:41.41 send me more than twelve legions of angels. 00:10:41.42\00:10:44.96 But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled? 00:10:44.97\00:10:47.04 That it must be so." The constant feature of the-- 00:10:47.05\00:10:50.19 everything is-- the scripture to be fulfilled. 00:10:50.20\00:10:54.14 Now when Judas comes, Ranko, 00:10:54.15\00:10:57.07 and he brings this motley crowd, this mob, 00:10:57.08\00:11:04.69 it's such a paradox they couldn't come 00:11:04.70\00:11:06.80 during the day time because the crowds would react. 00:11:06.81\00:11:09.92 So they have to come at night as cowards. 00:11:09.93\00:11:13.45 Actually from this point on everything what's going on 00:11:13.46\00:11:17.53 in the gospel of Mathew and also in other gospel is, 00:11:17.54\00:11:22.53 the arrest in Gethsemane, 00:11:22.54\00:11:24.49 the trial in the high priest's house there, 00:11:24.50\00:11:28.20 a trial before Pilate, irregularity after irregularity. 00:11:28.21\00:11:33.67 Nothing is regular here. 00:11:33.68\00:11:35.41 The Jewish leaders were determined 00:11:35.42\00:11:38.40 to destroy Jesus, Can I say? 00:11:38.41\00:11:41.90 This was not about blood and flesh. 00:11:41.91\00:11:47.61 They're being used. Satan-- 00:11:47.62\00:11:50.80 they simply function as agents in Satan's hands. 00:11:50.81\00:11:53.30 And I think in our next program we'll explore 00:11:53.31\00:11:55.58 some of the illegalities of the trials and the arrest. 00:11:55.59\00:11:59.99 But then begins with something, 00:12:00.00\00:12:01.86 one of the most prominent disciples 00:12:01.87\00:12:03.95 is participant in that. 00:12:03.96\00:12:05.30 And we will see-- With the kiss-- 00:12:05.31\00:12:06.70 We will see next time another disciples, 00:12:06.71\00:12:09.35 prominent disciples-- What is going on? 00:12:09.36\00:12:12.62 Praise God we have a wonderful savior, Amen. 00:12:12.63\00:12:15.59 Who did not look his own conformity, his own good. 00:12:15.60\00:12:20.99 He came down to die for you and me. 00:12:21.00\00:12:24.60 That's the main reason why He came. 00:12:24.61\00:12:29.17 And as we're studying this topic we can say 00:12:29.18\00:12:31.93 "Thank you Jesus for everything that you have done for us." 00:12:31.94\00:12:35.50
