Hi and welcome to the Books of the Books series here on 3ABN. 00:00:22.28\00:00:25.23 We're exploring the Gospel of Matthew. 00:00:25.24\00:00:27.58 I am Glenn Russell, Professor of Religion at Andrews University, 00:00:27.59\00:00:30.83 here with a friend 00:00:30.84\00:00:31.85 and Seminary Professor, Dr. Ranko Stefanovich. 00:00:31.86\00:00:35.25 Ranko, it's been a wonderful journey 00:00:35.26\00:00:36.96 going through the gospel of Mathew. 00:00:36.97\00:00:39.27 Some how, it just touches my life and I am sure, 00:00:39.28\00:00:41.94 yours each time we get into scripture. 00:00:41.95\00:00:43.82 Yes, I've been teaching Gospel of Matthew 00:00:43.83\00:00:46.42 and doing much deeper research 00:00:46.43\00:00:49.13 into this book for about seventeen years. 00:00:49.14\00:00:51.64 And every time, even today and even during 00:00:51.65\00:00:54.58 the taping of this series, every time the detail 00:00:54.59\00:00:58.97 here and detail there that impacts my life 00:00:58.98\00:01:01.99 and make think and to come much closer to Jesus Christ. 00:01:02.00\00:01:05.39 It's a wonderful gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:01:05.40\00:01:07.23 The wonderful privilege to study God's word. Yes. 00:01:07.24\00:01:09.57 Let's ask God to direct our study here today. 00:01:09.58\00:01:13.12 Lord as we come into your presence, 00:01:13.13\00:01:17.32 we don't want to rush in with our ideas and our opinions. 00:01:17.33\00:01:19.69 We want to pause and ask 00:01:19.70\00:01:21.72 that you'll take away any preconceptions. 00:01:21.73\00:01:24.19 May we hear your word. 00:01:24.20\00:01:26.20 May we listen carefully for your voice. 00:01:26.21\00:01:28.92 In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Amen. 00:01:28.93\00:01:32.80 You know, Ranko, we've been taking this journey 00:01:32.81\00:01:35.11 with Jesus through the gospel of Mathew 00:01:35.12\00:01:37.49 and we've come up to the very end of His earthly ministry. 00:01:37.50\00:01:41.41 Now we can't say the end of His life because though his life 00:01:41.42\00:01:44.40 ended He's a resurrected by lord. 00:01:44.41\00:01:46.34 But we see the end of His earthly ministry 00:01:46.35\00:01:48.63 here just about the time of the cross. 00:01:48.64\00:01:51.98 And He's just concluded 00:01:51.99\00:01:53.24 the Lord's Supper with his disciples. 00:01:53.25\00:01:55.46 You know there is just a little thought from the east 00:01:55.47\00:01:57.54 that I think can be worthwhile here. 00:01:57.55\00:02:00.05 In the Middle East where I grew up, 00:02:00.06\00:02:01.90 if you share a meal with someone, 00:02:01.91\00:02:04.79 especially someone who has harmed you, 00:02:04.80\00:02:07.46 you're extending forgiveness and friendship. 00:02:07.47\00:02:09.70 And I marvel of fact that Jesus, till the very end, 00:02:09.71\00:02:13.07 keeps reaching out to Judas. 00:02:13.08\00:02:15.02 He knows what he will do. 00:02:15.03\00:02:16.52 He understands he's the betrayer. 00:02:16.53\00:02:17.81 He reveals he is a betrayer. 00:02:17.82\00:02:19.43 But He still keeps reaching out to him. 00:02:19.44\00:02:21.40 One more chance, but instead Judas turns away. 00:02:21.41\00:02:27.20 Actually when we are talking about the Lord's Supper, 00:02:27.21\00:02:30.38 we forget to one aspect. 00:02:30.39\00:02:33.21 The meaning of a meal eating together as you just mentioned. 00:02:33.22\00:02:37.09 You know, while we are here taping this series 00:02:37.10\00:02:39.47 we made several, you know, visits together 00:02:39.48\00:02:42.22 to eat to eat together. 00:02:42.23\00:02:43.62 As you eat there are bonds that are created. 00:02:43.63\00:02:46.04 When we go to the gospel of John, 00:02:46.05\00:02:47.91 actually this last supper begins with statement of John 00:02:47.92\00:02:51.72 that Jesus knew that the hour has, come and that He loved 00:02:51.73\00:02:56.10 those who're with Him as He loved them in the beginning. 00:02:56.11\00:02:59.16 And actually this meal strengthened those bones 00:02:59.17\00:03:02.29 between--so the communal service it's also lovely dinner 00:03:02.30\00:03:07.90 when people come much closer to each other 00:03:07.91\00:03:11.44 and much closer to God. 00:03:11.45\00:03:12.75 So as we worship with our fellow believers 00:03:12.76\00:03:15.47 and have a communion service, the Lord's Supper, 00:03:15.48\00:03:17.66 the bonds of faith and the bonds of fellowship 00:03:17.67\00:03:19.98 must be strengthened. 00:03:19.99\00:03:21.07 That's why we shouldn't avoid that experience. 00:03:21.08\00:03:23.39 Sometimes you'll feel, 00:03:23.40\00:03:24.50 "Eh, it's a little uncomfortable," so they miss it. 00:03:24.51\00:03:26.68 But it's rich experience. 00:03:26.69\00:03:28.07 Now, from that supper we go out to that dark experience 00:03:28.08\00:03:35.00 that Jesus had in Gethsemane. 00:03:35.01\00:03:36.74 Let's enter into that journey with Him. 00:03:36.75\00:03:39.05 So let us make a brief survey to see what was going on. 00:03:39.06\00:03:45.09 So after eating the last Passover with His disciples, 00:03:45.10\00:03:51.06 Jesus and the eleven they left the upper room. 00:03:51.07\00:03:56.33 Glenn, how many times you visit Jerusalem there? 00:03:56.34\00:03:59.87 And it's very hard to talk 00:03:59.88\00:04:01.61 about that without visualizing what happened. 00:04:01.62\00:04:04.64 Jesus left the city. 00:04:04.65\00:04:06.66 We still--when you go there, there're remnants 00:04:06.67\00:04:09.84 there of those stairways by which Jesus 00:04:09.85\00:04:14.30 was going down from the city. 00:04:14.31\00:04:16.38 So leaving the city they descended 00:04:16.39\00:04:18.78 down to the Kidron Valley. 00:04:18.79\00:04:21.51 And then they had to climb little bit 00:04:21.52\00:04:23.95 toward the Mount of Olives. 00:04:23.96\00:04:25.65 But in the foot of the Mount of Olives, 00:04:25.66\00:04:28.54 on the western side, there was one garden. 00:04:28.55\00:04:33.29 This is how the gospel call it. 00:04:33.30\00:04:35.14 It was called Gethsemane. 00:04:35.15\00:04:37.84 Probably, that place belonged to one of the friends of Jesus. 00:04:37.85\00:04:43.09 So very often, after very stormy days debating 00:04:43.10\00:04:50.96 with the Pharisees, Jesus needed the place to be alone 00:04:50.97\00:04:54.61 and to pray there, you know, 00:04:54.62\00:04:56.81 to have communication the Father. 00:04:56.82\00:04:58.43 Jesus would go to that place. 00:04:58.44\00:05:00.50 That place was very much familiar to Jesus 00:05:00.51\00:05:02.97 and the disciples because when Judas wanted to take that mob 00:05:02.98\00:05:07.26 to arrest Jesus he knew exactly where Jesus was. 00:05:07.27\00:05:11.08 So it was not difficult for them to find Jesus. 00:05:11.09\00:05:14.68 By the way Gethsemane means "Olive press." 00:05:14.69\00:05:19.98 Because the place was filled with Olive trees 00:05:19.99\00:05:24.81 there at the slope of the Mount of Olives. 00:05:24.82\00:05:26.78 That's why we called the Mount of Olives. 00:05:26.79\00:05:32.40 Those Olive trees that originally stood there 00:05:32.41\00:05:36.17 we know that few decades later 00:05:36.18\00:05:38.45 all those trees were cut by Romans. 00:05:38.46\00:05:40.93 In order to set to fire to destroy the city and the temple. 00:05:40.94\00:05:46.25 But out of the roots of those old trees new trees came out. 00:05:46.26\00:05:51.96 So we have somehow few gigantic Olive trees 00:05:51.97\00:05:57.02 that feature that place. 00:05:57.03\00:05:59.17 And some of those trees really 00:05:59.18\00:06:01.19 they can be traced back to that time, 00:06:01.20\00:06:03.86 even though we don't have originally trees, 00:06:03.87\00:06:05.99 but the trees that they came out, you know? 00:06:06.00\00:06:08.66 Specially that one, the gigantic tree 00:06:08.67\00:06:11.11 that is surrounded by that iron fence there, I had opportunity 00:06:11.12\00:06:17.71 to get a special permission with my wife 00:06:17.72\00:06:19.95 and to go there to touch the tree. 00:06:19.96\00:06:22.97 It was a special feeling 00:06:22.98\00:06:24.75 and Glenn, what we are talking is it really fill us with awe, 00:06:24.76\00:06:28.72 with a reverence because we are not now dealing 00:06:28.73\00:06:32.20 with every days activities and life of Jesus. 00:06:32.21\00:06:36.26 We're dealing with those last moments of Jesus life 00:06:36.27\00:06:40.03 when that destiny of entire human race 00:06:40.04\00:06:43.34 was there at a stake. 00:06:43.35\00:06:44.99 And I wanna emphasize what you said it was Jesus' 00:06:45.00\00:06:47.93 habit often to go there in prayer, yes. 00:06:47.94\00:06:50.36 He doesn't have a home address. 00:06:50.37\00:06:51.84 He doesn't have a quite place He can go to in prayer. 00:06:51.85\00:06:54.60 And the disciples usually had the routine 00:06:54.61\00:06:56.88 of perhaps praying with Him for a little while 00:06:56.89\00:06:59.61 and then they would fall asleep and He would continue. 00:06:59.62\00:07:01.71 So they're expecting another usual night. Right.. 00:07:01.72\00:07:05.27 Praying with Jesus for some-- a little while 00:07:05.28\00:07:07.33 and then they're asleep and He'll continue. 00:07:07.34\00:07:09.20 Jesus would pray the whole night they would be sleeping 00:07:09.21\00:07:11.82 the whole night and the morning they will join. 00:07:11.83\00:07:13.45 That this is what we expected. 00:07:13.46\00:07:15.44 That's our expectation. 00:07:15.45\00:07:16.47 But there was something else that happened 00:07:16.48\00:07:18.10 and I would like, Glenn, 00:07:18.11\00:07:19.33 to ask you if you would be willing to read 00:07:19.34\00:07:23.27 first from--sorry, its verse 36 to 46. 00:07:23.28\00:07:29.55 So we are in the gospel of Matthew, Chapter 26, 00:07:29.56\00:07:33.28 continuing the chain of events 00:07:33.29\00:07:37.56 after the Lord's Supper and verses 36 to 46. 00:07:37.57\00:07:43.50 Please, would you read it? 00:07:43.51\00:07:45.67 "Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, 00:07:45.68\00:07:49.39 and He said to His disciples, 00:07:49.40\00:07:51.14 'Sit here, while I go yonder and pray.' 00:07:51.15\00:07:54.18 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, 00:07:54.19\00:07:57.78 He began to be sorrowful and troubled. 00:07:57.79\00:08:01.39 Then He said to them, 'My soul is very sorrowful, 00:08:01.40\00:08:04.26 even to death, remain here, and watch with Me.' 00:08:04.27\00:08:09.15 And going a little further he fell on his face and prayed, 00:08:09.16\00:08:12.97 'My Father, if it is possible, 00:08:12.98\00:08:15.61 let this cup pass from me, nevertheless, 00:08:15.62\00:08:18.98 not as I will, but as thou will.' 00:08:18.99\00:08:21.84 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. 00:08:21.85\00:08:24.37 And He said to Peter, 00:08:24.38\00:08:26.54 'So, could you not watch with me one hour? 00:08:26.55\00:08:29.82 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. 00:08:29.83\00:08:32.92 The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.' 00:08:32.93\00:08:37.20 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, 00:08:37.21\00:08:39.92 'My Father, if this cannot pass unless 00:08:39.93\00:08:43.34 I drink it, thy will be done.' 00:08:43.35\00:08:46.48 And again He came and found them sleeping, 00:08:46.49\00:08:48.21 for their eyes were heavy. 00:08:48.22\00:08:50.88 So, leaving them again, He went away and prayed 00:08:50.89\00:08:53.70 for the third time, saying the same words. 00:08:53.71\00:08:58.15 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, 00:08:58.16\00:09:01.75 'Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? 00:09:01.76\00:09:04.42 Behold the hours at hand, and the Son of Man 00:09:04.43\00:09:07.05 is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 00:09:07.06\00:09:09.48 Rise, let us be going see, my betrayer is at hand.'" 00:09:09.49\00:09:14.85 What a scene? What a scene? 00:09:14.86\00:09:17.53 So what we have here it is Jesus came with His disciples 00:09:19.03\00:09:24.43 there in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:09:24.44\00:09:26.47 As you mentioned they expect the just usual routine. 00:09:26.48\00:09:30.42 They would go there, find little comfortable place, 00:09:30.43\00:09:34.00 comfortable you know, to sleep there. 00:09:34.01\00:09:36.47 And they knew what the master was doing. 00:09:36.48\00:09:38.36 He would go, little bit, far away from them and to sleep. 00:09:38.37\00:09:42.38 But this time something is different. 00:09:42.39\00:09:44.14 What is different? 00:09:44.15\00:09:45.17 Jesus takes those three disciples. 00:09:45.18\00:09:49.03 In gospel of Matthew and other gospels 00:09:49.04\00:09:52.28 they were three very close to Jesus. 00:09:52.29\00:09:54.99 There is something very interesting. 00:09:55.00\00:09:57.25 When I was young pastor I was always taught. 00:09:57.26\00:10:00.40 Please, when you are there in the church 00:10:00.41\00:10:02.51 you cannot have close friends 00:10:02.52\00:10:04.25 you have to treat all people equal. 00:10:04.26\00:10:06.96 But somehow my response was always even 00:10:06.97\00:10:09.77 Jesus had the church. 00:10:09.78\00:10:11.32 Had the twevle disciples and so many others 00:10:11.33\00:10:13.28 but He needed three people. 00:10:13.29\00:10:14.92 You need somebody very close 00:10:14.93\00:10:18.49 that sometimes you can talk to, sometimes that you can pray 00:10:18.50\00:10:21.61 and actually this is what happened. 00:10:21.62\00:10:23.38 But there is one element 00:10:23.39\00:10:25.15 that I would like here to underline. 00:10:25.16\00:10:27.52 You see Matthew, provides the description 00:10:27.53\00:10:31.12 about what is going on. 00:10:31.13\00:10:32.92 When you see it there is something 00:10:32.93\00:10:35.26 always missing in this description 00:10:35.27\00:10:37.37 of Gethsemane, why? 00:10:37.38\00:10:38.53 Because Matthew was one of those, 00:10:38.54\00:10:41.58 how many, eight, without Judas, okay, 00:10:41.59\00:10:44.61 who were sleeping there. 00:10:44.62\00:10:46.51 But when we go to the Gospel of John, 00:10:46.52\00:10:48.60 John was one of those three. 00:10:48.61\00:10:50.53 John provides the firsthand description, 00:10:50.54\00:10:54.71 account what took place. 00:10:54.72\00:10:56.60 And also we have some information coming from Luke 00:10:56.61\00:11:00.13 and we know that Luke got the most of his information 00:11:00.14\00:11:03.30 from Paul and also from Peter. 00:11:03.31\00:11:05.96 So the firsthand experience 00:11:05.97\00:11:07.59 and we would really like few times to reflect 00:11:07.60\00:11:11.83 to those other accounts to see what was going on. 00:11:11.84\00:11:15.03 So, Glenn, Jesus was there and please 00:11:15.04\00:11:17.98 what now happened there. 00:11:17.99\00:11:19.25 Well, your point about going with these three, 00:11:19.26\00:11:22.15 who were His closest friend. 00:11:22.16\00:11:23.91 And I think, we see a time when Jesus needed their support. 00:11:23.92\00:11:29.45 And that tells us something about humanness of Jesus. 00:11:29.46\00:11:32.55 Sometimes we get the impression that this was just a script 00:11:32.56\00:11:36.62 that He was going through He wasn't really suffering. 00:11:36.63\00:11:39.40 That really the cross-- He couldn't have failed. 00:11:39.41\00:11:42.23 But we're entering into the hinge of history. 00:11:42.24\00:11:45.26 This is the most critical point in human history, 00:11:45.27\00:11:47.82 in these hours you're leading up to the cross. 00:11:47.83\00:11:49.93 But there is something very unusual and--the disciples 00:11:49.94\00:11:54.66 were very slow to understand. 00:11:54.67\00:11:56.91 For the first time, in accompany with them, 00:11:56.92\00:12:03.63 Jesus does not go faraway to pray. 00:12:03.64\00:12:05.86 He says to His disciples 00:12:05.87\00:12:08.22 please, would you somehow pray with me? 00:12:08.23\00:12:13.63 He's asking for their prayers as well. 00:12:13.64\00:12:18.60 He has said, "My soul is very sorrowful, 00:12:18.61\00:12:20.89 even to death remained and watch with me." 00:12:20.90\00:12:22.81 And Passover was a feast of watching. 00:12:22.82\00:12:25.66 It was all about watching. 00:12:25.67\00:12:27.52 They should have sensed the timing. 00:12:27.53\00:12:29.86 I believe the devil is working hard here. 00:12:29.87\00:12:32.03 And prior to death he was talking to them constantly, 00:12:32.04\00:12:35.64 "We are going to Jerusalem to die." 00:12:35.65\00:12:37.24 Then after last time, "the time, 00:12:37.25\00:12:39.19 the hour has come and let's go there." 00:12:39.20\00:12:41.62 They knew but still they did not understand. 00:12:41.63\00:12:44.29 And what a lesson that is to us because 00:12:44.30\00:12:46.34 there's times in our life 00:12:46.35\00:12:47.47 when we don't sense what time it is, 00:12:47.48\00:12:49.47 we don't know what tomorrow brings. 00:12:49.48\00:12:51.47 We don't know what's ahead and we need to spend 00:12:51.48\00:12:54.24 those times in prayer with God. 00:12:54.25\00:12:55.67 Jesus is trying to lead them they didn't recognize the time. 00:12:55.68\00:12:59.50 And so they missed this opportunity to strengthen 00:12:59.51\00:13:01.84 themselves and it would have been wonderful if they had. 00:13:01.85\00:13:04.96 How often we missed God's timing also. 00:13:04.97\00:13:08.12 And now there're here a few details 00:13:08.13\00:13:10.30 that we have to mention. 00:13:10.31\00:13:11.30 According to the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 20 to 41, 00:13:11.31\00:13:14.51 it says, "That Jesus went far away 00:13:14.52\00:13:20.07 from them about a stones thrown." 00:13:20.08\00:13:23.92 How far is that, Glenn? 00:13:23.93\00:13:25.41 One hundred yards? Maybe. 00:13:25.42\00:13:28.31 This is very important element 00:13:28.32\00:13:29.62 that usually the readers of the Bible 00:13:29.63\00:13:32.08 they do not pay attention. 00:13:32.09\00:13:33.38 That's one detail, how far? 00:13:33.39\00:13:35.08 He was some distance from them. 00:13:35.09\00:13:38.96 Now we read, he said, verse 39, 00:13:38.97\00:13:42.87 "He went little beyond them fell on His face and He prayed, 00:13:42.88\00:13:47.47 'My father if it is possible let these cup pass 00:13:47.48\00:13:51.37 from me, yet not as I will but as you will.'" 00:13:51.38\00:13:55.05 And then we read it in Gospel of Matthew 00:13:55.06\00:13:57.08 we don't get the full picture. 00:13:57.09\00:13:59.06 But there're few texts, one text is the gospel of Luke. 00:13:59.07\00:14:03.75 The same Chapter 20 to 44 when we read, 00:14:03.76\00:14:08.13 that actually there was a sweat mixed with the blood 00:14:08.14\00:14:14.62 that was coming out of His skin. 00:14:14.63\00:14:16.62 That's one, but another element is, 00:14:16.63\00:14:19.94 Glenn, I would like to ask you if you can read 00:14:19.95\00:14:22.43 Hebrews Chapter 5, verse 7. 00:14:22.44\00:14:26.13 This is another text. We have two texts. 00:14:26.14\00:14:29.04 When we put those texts together 00:14:29.05\00:14:31.38 we can see the agony that Jesus suffer there 00:14:31.39\00:14:33.59 in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:14:33.60\00:14:34.60 Hebrews Chapter five. Yeah, verse seven. 00:14:34.61\00:14:39.09 We're here in Hebrews, Chapter five, 00:14:39.10\00:14:40.63 but Ranko I think we'll take a break 00:14:40.64\00:14:42.08 we'll comeback to explore this text. 00:14:42.09\00:14:43.87 We will be right back after a break, stay tuned. 00:14:43.88\00:14:46.45
