Amen. Amen. 00:01:52.76\00:01:57.27 Ranko, before we go into our study for the today, 00:01:57.28\00:02:01.31 could you please take us back and help us get an overview? 00:02:01.32\00:02:05.22 Many times we read these parts of the Bible 00:02:05.23\00:02:06.99 we don't recognize the timeframe 00:02:07.00\00:02:08.69 when the last week of Jesus' life 00:02:08.70\00:02:10.75 would often call the Passion Week. Yes. 00:02:10.76\00:02:13.16 Walk us through the each day, Sunday through Friday. 00:02:13.17\00:02:16.37 What happened and when it took place? Okay. 00:02:16.38\00:02:17.40 So we want to make clear 00:02:17.41\00:02:19.86 that we are dealing with the last week of Jesus' life 00:02:19.87\00:02:24.65 before the crucifixion. So we started-- 00:02:24.66\00:02:28.48 okay, the last portion 00:02:28.49\00:02:30.02 of the Gospel of Mathew by reading about Jesus 00:02:30.03\00:02:34.00 who riding the donkey entered Jerusalem there. 00:02:34.01\00:02:38.12 Okay. The triumphal entry. 00:02:38.13\00:02:40.68 Actually that event took place on Sunday. 00:02:40.69\00:02:46.14 Most likely on Monday the following day 00:02:46.15\00:02:50.13 Jesus went there to the temple to cleanse the temple. 00:02:50.14\00:02:55.21 It was followed by the cursing of the victory in which 00:02:55.22\00:02:59.08 Jesus announced the destiny of the leaders of the nations. 00:02:59.09\00:03:04.83 And we had a long debate 00:03:04.84\00:03:06.85 and controversies with the Pharisees. 00:03:06.86\00:03:08.64 You remember that, they were chasing 00:03:08.65\00:03:10.32 after Jesus trying to confuse Him 00:03:10.33\00:03:12.19 with the questions et cetera. 00:03:12.20\00:03:13.35 And to trap him, yeah. That was on Monday. 00:03:13.36\00:03:16.15 Then on Tuesday the following day 00:03:16.16\00:03:19.06 probably few more traps of the Pharisees. 00:03:19.07\00:03:24.28 And on that day on Tuesday Jesus made-- 00:03:24.29\00:03:28.89 okay, that speech against the Pharisees and telling them, 00:03:28.90\00:03:34.22 "Now your house will be left desolate on that day." 00:03:34.23\00:03:38.16 For the last time Jesus walked out of the temple, 00:03:38.17\00:03:42.87 went to the Mount of Olives. 00:03:42.88\00:03:45.67 The disciples asked Him that question 00:03:45.68\00:03:48.31 about the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem 00:03:48.32\00:03:51.87 and also about the sign of His coming. 00:03:51.88\00:03:54.69 All of these things happened on Tuesday. 00:03:54.70\00:03:57.79 After Tuesday Jesus did not return 00:03:57.80\00:04:03.36 to the city or to the temple. 00:04:03.37\00:04:05.06 By the way, Glenn, we were in Jerusalem there. 00:04:05.07\00:04:07.63 I myself, I was in the city 00:04:07.64\00:04:09.65 and finally I decided to go with my wife 00:04:09.66\00:04:13.32 to walk to the place called Bethany 00:04:13.33\00:04:16.32 which is about two miles, I think, 00:04:16.33\00:04:18.18 if I remember it's not far away. 00:04:18.19\00:04:20.07 It took me and my wife probably 00:04:20.08\00:04:21.63 about 45 minutes to walk there. 00:04:21.64\00:04:24.40 But when you walk from the Mount of Olives 00:04:24.41\00:04:26.64 it's even much, much closer. 00:04:26.65\00:04:28.27 So Jesus from the Mount of Olives, 00:04:28.28\00:04:30.70 He walked with His disciples to Bethany-- 00:04:30.71\00:04:33.45 Who was in Bethany there? His beloved friends. 00:04:33.46\00:04:36.23 His beloved friends, Mary and Martha. 00:04:36.24\00:04:38.50 We know the resurrection of Lazarus. 00:04:38.51\00:04:41.31 So on Wednesday actually Jesus was in Bethany. 00:04:41.32\00:04:47.82 So now Glenn, what we are reading here 00:04:47.83\00:04:49.75 in chapter 26 verses 1, can we say 1:19, 00:04:49.76\00:04:57.66 actually all of these things they happen on Wednesday 00:04:57.67\00:05:01.52 while Jesus was there in Bethany. 00:05:01.53\00:05:05.75 And then just a preview on Thursday 00:05:05.76\00:05:08.68 we have the Lord's Supper and Gethsemane 00:05:08.69\00:05:12.26 that night and the cross on Friday--Yes. 00:05:12.27\00:05:14.17 Just to fill out the-- Yes. 00:05:14.18\00:05:15.51 We wanted so far that our viewers 00:05:15.52\00:05:18.13 know how the last week of life of Jesus 00:05:18.14\00:05:21.15 will get to provide the chronology of that. 00:05:21.16\00:05:23.15 So while Jesus was in Bethany, evidently the Pharisees, 00:05:23.16\00:05:27.13 you know, they missed Jesus' company. 00:05:27.14\00:05:31.02 For this, several days they were constantly chasing after Jesus. 00:05:31.03\00:05:34.43 Now Jesus-- where is Jesus? 00:05:34.44\00:05:36.28 And then something happened from verse one to five. 00:05:36.29\00:05:39.52 "Now when Jesus had finished all these sayings--" 00:05:39.53\00:05:41.18 You remember that phrase when Jesus finished, 00:05:41.19\00:05:44.13 it always marked the blocks, 00:05:44.14\00:05:45.74 you know, of those sayings of Jesus. 00:05:45.75\00:05:47.60 "He said to His disciples, 00:05:47.61\00:05:49.36 'You know that after two days the Passover is coming, 00:05:49.37\00:05:51.92 and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.' 00:05:51.93\00:05:55.10 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people 00:05:55.11\00:05:57.77 gathered in the palace of the high priest, 00:05:57.78\00:05:59.70 who was called Caiaphas. 00:05:59.71\00:06:01.66 and took counsel together in order to arrest 00:06:01.67\00:06:04.26 Jesus by stealth and kill him. 00:06:04.27\00:06:06.46 But they said, 'Not during the feast, 00:06:06.47\00:06:09.25 lest there be a tumult among the people.'" 00:06:09.26\00:06:11.65 By the way they didn't have an address for Jesus. No. 00:06:11.66\00:06:14.66 He is an itinerant. Yeah. 00:06:14.67\00:06:16.84 So they are now determined, "We have to do away with Jesus." 00:06:16.85\00:06:22.51 But what about this not because of the people, 00:06:22.52\00:06:25.97 they're fearful of the crowd. 00:06:25.98\00:06:28.07 Interesting how people can be an excuse. 00:06:28.08\00:06:32.42 Now as they are-- can I say 00:06:32.43\00:06:37.06 as they are having a meeting trying to decide 00:06:37.07\00:06:39.42 what to do with Jesus? 00:06:39.43\00:06:40.56 Jesus is there in Bethany. 00:06:40.57\00:06:43.09 And He's invited to attend most likely dinner or lunch 00:06:43.10\00:06:49.05 at the home of Simon, the former leper that Jesus healed him. 00:06:49.06\00:06:52.87 And evidently, the person prepared the meal 00:06:52.88\00:06:56.49 as a token of his gratefulness to Jesus and then, 00:06:56.50\00:07:00.32 something happen, Glenn. 00:07:00.33\00:07:01.38 This is fantastic. We have to read it verse 6-13. 00:07:01.39\00:07:05.26 "Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, 00:07:05.27\00:07:08.91 a woman came upon Him 00:07:08.92\00:07:10.79 with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, 00:07:10.80\00:07:13.88 and she poured it on His head, 00:07:13.89\00:07:15.96 as He sat at the table. 00:07:15.97\00:07:17.87 But when the disciples saw it, 00:07:17.88\00:07:19.51 they were indignant, saying, "Why this waste? 00:07:19.52\00:07:23.42 For this ointment might have been sold for a large sum, 00:07:23.43\00:07:26.71 and given to the poor." 00:07:26.72\00:07:28.61 But Jesus, aware of this, 00:07:28.62\00:07:29.88 said to them "Why do you trouble this woman? 00:07:29.89\00:07:33.37 For she has done a beautiful thing to Me. 00:07:33.38\00:07:36.28 For you always have the poor with you, 00:07:36.29\00:07:38.67 but you will not always have me. 00:07:38.68\00:07:40.56 In pouring this ointment on my body 00:07:40.57\00:07:42.51 she has done it to prepare Me for burial. 00:07:42.52\00:07:44.94 Truly, I say to you, 00:07:44.95\00:07:46.85 wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, 00:07:46.86\00:07:49.72 what she has done will be told in memory of her." 00:07:49.73\00:07:52.79 Okay. It's very important when we started this event 00:07:52.80\00:07:58.80 also to go to the Gospel of John Chapter 12 00:07:58.81\00:08:02.15 because in John Chapter 12 00:08:02.16\00:08:04.00 we have few more details that Matthew does mention here. 00:08:04.01\00:08:08.19 Keep in mind that John was always 00:08:08.20\00:08:10.04 one of the three very close to Jesus 00:08:10.05\00:08:12.13 so he knew some details that evidently 00:08:12.14\00:08:15.73 Mathew did not have access. 00:08:15.74\00:08:17.85 And what are--what are the details that we have? 00:08:17.86\00:08:21.39 Number one we have here a woman in Gospel of John 00:08:21.40\00:08:25.81 that woman has a name. 00:08:25.82\00:08:29.00 It's the sister of Lazarus, Mary, okay? 00:08:29.01\00:08:33.95 Another thing is John chapter 12 is telling us 00:08:33.96\00:08:39.25 that actually she spent about three hundred dinari 00:08:39.26\00:08:43.49 or denarius to buy this perfume. 00:08:43.50\00:08:47.35 Almost a year's wage. 00:08:47.36\00:08:48.49 So if one denarius is daily wage so-- 00:08:48.50\00:08:54.23 Your salary--She worked all year in order to buy. 00:08:57.23\00:09:01.71 So we have here some details. Why did she do it? 00:09:01.72\00:09:05.10 Evidently as a token of her thankfulness 00:09:05.11\00:09:09.21 and gratitude to Jesus what He did for her personally. 00:09:09.22\00:09:15.60 If Mary was indeed that woman out 00:09:15.61\00:09:19.96 which Jesus cast out those demons, etcetera, 00:09:19.97\00:09:25.06 that she had very, very problematic past. 00:09:25.07\00:09:28.31 She was very much, much forgiven. 00:09:28.32\00:09:31.09 And also what Jesus did for her brother, 00:09:31.10\00:09:33.64 you know, resurrection of Lazarus. 00:09:33.65\00:09:35.87 It was actually her precious gift. 00:09:35.88\00:09:39.22 You know, when you buy a gift the person 00:09:39.23\00:09:41.34 that you love, you don't try to save money. 00:09:41.35\00:09:44.36 You do your most-- you try to do your best 00:09:44.37\00:09:48.06 because you love that person. 00:09:48.07\00:09:49.71 And this is what she did for her beloved teacher 00:09:49.72\00:09:54.26 as a token of gratitude for what He did for her. 00:09:54.27\00:09:58.62 We'll see that she had one motivation which Jesus accepts 00:09:58.63\00:10:02.49 but He even indicates 00:10:02.50\00:10:03.73 it has more meaning than she understood. 00:10:03.74\00:10:05.59 Yeah. Actually He said, 00:10:05.60\00:10:08.39 "She anointed me actually prepare me for my burial 00:10:08.40\00:10:13.16 because some thing was to happen very, very soon." 00:10:13.17\00:10:17.10 How thankful we are that 00:10:17.13\00:10:18.16 she was obedient to the spirit leading her. 00:10:18.17\00:10:21.32 Now not all the disciples were thrilled with this decision. 00:10:21.33\00:10:24.68 And it becomes pivotal in Judas' response. 00:10:24.69\00:10:28.61 Actually it is a game 00:10:28.62\00:10:30.86 that we have to go to the Gospel of John, 00:10:30.87\00:10:34.52 because here it said that some of the disciples protested. 00:10:34.53\00:10:39.43 "Why we do not take this money 00:10:39.44\00:10:41.28 and distribute to the poor people?" 00:10:41.29\00:10:42.76 And Jesus was-- actually John provides 00:10:42.77\00:10:45.81 another detail that not all disciples did it. 00:10:45.82\00:10:49.65 It was Judas, himself, who protested. 00:10:49.66\00:10:52.21 They may have agreed with some of it. Yes. 00:10:52.22\00:10:54.02 And, you know, the book Desire of Ages 00:10:54.03\00:10:55.45 has a wonderful insight that tells us 00:10:55.46\00:10:57.55 that many of the conflict among the disciples 00:10:57.56\00:11:00.10 when they argued about who is the greatest 00:11:00.11\00:11:02.01 were started by Judas, stirred by his spirit. 00:11:02.02\00:11:04.33 You know, He always knew how to do it. Yes. 00:11:04.34\00:11:08.03 You know, keep in mind he was very influential, 00:11:08.04\00:11:10.40 he was educated person. 00:11:10.41\00:11:11.92 He knew how to manipulate it with human minds. 00:11:11.93\00:11:14.60 Evidently, this event-- okay, 00:11:14.61\00:11:18.72 I would like to put it in this way. 00:11:18.73\00:11:20.30 On the same day when Mary brought to Jesus 00:11:20.31\00:11:26.92 a precious gift of love. That same day, see, 00:11:26.93\00:11:31.27 three hundred denarius and the annual salary. 00:11:31.28\00:11:34.77 At the same moment Judas made decision 00:11:34.78\00:11:38.02 to go to betray his master 00:11:38.03\00:11:40.39 for how much for a price of a slave. 00:11:40.40\00:11:43.73 Is it a tragedy and irony? They're in the same room. 00:11:43.74\00:11:47.91 They were both close to the savior 00:11:47.92\00:11:50.24 but two different responses. So now we go to-- 00:11:50.27\00:11:53.02 And Jesus says that, "She's done a beautiful thing to me." 00:11:53.03\00:11:55.59 He understood something, 00:11:55.60\00:11:58.77 somehow the Holy Spirit prompted Mary 00:11:58.78\00:12:01.66 to do something as a preview of His burial. 00:12:01.67\00:12:05.12 So what was that-- what is the problem with Judas? 00:12:05.13\00:12:08.24 Well he's never-- Jesus is never anointed later. 00:12:08.25\00:12:10.73 They don't get to Him in time. 00:12:10.74\00:12:12.77 Actually, Judas-- Judas, 00:12:12.78\00:12:15.13 he joined the group for a wrong reason. 00:12:15.14\00:12:18.85 He hoped because he was the most influential 00:12:18.86\00:12:20.92 when Jesus establishes His kingdom, 00:12:20.93\00:12:23.02 by the way all the disciples 00:12:23.03\00:12:24.52 hope something to happen to them, 00:12:24.53\00:12:26.05 you know, but he assumed 00:12:26.06\00:12:28.57 the first place is reserve for him there in the kingdom. 00:12:28.58\00:12:31.65 But when he saw that Jesus was doing nothing 00:12:31.66\00:12:36.48 to take opportunity and grasp the power. 00:12:36.49\00:12:40.27 By the way in the Gospel of John chapter 6, 00:12:40.28\00:12:43.04 we read clearly that actually it was Judas 00:12:43.05\00:12:45.54 who prompted the people and inspire them, 00:12:45.55\00:12:47.60 you know, to make Jesus king by force. 00:12:47.61\00:12:50.07 He was the one always behind 00:12:50.08\00:12:51.82 the scene working all those things. 00:12:51.83\00:12:56.61 But now there is also in Gospel of Luke Chapter 22 verse 3, 00:12:56.62\00:13:02.00 we read something that there is not it's not found in Mathew 26. 00:13:02.01\00:13:07.47 It said at that moment Satan entered into Judas. 00:13:07.48\00:13:13.14 It's Luke Chapter 22 verse 3. 00:13:13.15\00:13:16.16 And Might we mention that this is not the first time. 00:13:16.17\00:13:19.01 As you've said Judas had been beside Jesus 00:13:19.02\00:13:23.15 part of his ministry. How close, Ranko, 00:13:23.16\00:13:25.85 how close he was? 00:13:25.86\00:13:27.73 But day by day he resisted the Holy Spirit. 00:13:27.74\00:13:30.63 Now his life is completely given over. 00:13:30.64\00:13:33.33 Do you remember that we're talking about unpardonable sin? 00:13:33.34\00:13:36.63 This is exactly. Judas was resisting the influence 00:13:36.64\00:13:41.49 of the Holy Spirit constantly, constantly, constantly. 00:13:41.50\00:13:43.98 And this is what unpardonable sin is. 00:13:43.99\00:13:46.43 He put himself into the position that actually 00:13:46.44\00:13:49.21 the Holy Spirit could not do for him anything more. 00:13:49.22\00:13:53.04 Now he'll be used by the devil. 00:13:53.05\00:13:54.46 So, the--Satan is entering him-- before we go to the break, 00:13:54.47\00:13:58.78 can we just see what is-- okay 00:13:58.79\00:14:01.55 or maybe to wait for the break. Okay. 00:14:01.56\00:14:03.51 Well, there is much more here in the story. 00:14:03.52\00:14:05.66 We're gonna come back. Don't go away. 00:14:05.67\00:14:07.52 Yes. We will be right back after the break. 00:14:07.53\00:14:09.27
