Welcome, to the "Books of the Books," series. 00:00:21.20\00:00:23.98 You're on 3ABN. 00:00:23.99\00:00:25.37 We're exploring the gospel of Mathew, 00:00:25.38\00:00:28.09 inspired by the Holy Spirit, written for our benefit. 00:00:28.10\00:00:32.07 As we spent time in this word, we're just drawn to the savior 00:00:32.08\00:00:36.72 who is painted and portrayed 00:00:36.73\00:00:38.60 in such beautiful word pictures here, gospel of Mathew. 00:00:38.61\00:00:42.11 I would like to welcome back Dr. Ranko Stefanovic. 00:00:42.12\00:00:45.59 Ranko, as a professor of New Testament, 00:00:45.60\00:00:48.82 all scripture is inspired by God 00:00:48.83\00:00:51.59 but there are certain books that draw you 00:00:51.60\00:00:53.08 and there're certain things about certain books. 00:00:53.09\00:00:55.80 What is it about the gospel of Mathew 00:00:55.81\00:00:57.49 that especially appeals to you? 00:00:57.50\00:00:59.21 We already stated that the gospel of Mathew 00:00:59.22\00:01:01.82 is the gospel for the Church. 00:01:01.83\00:01:04.68 Telling us how Christians should live 00:01:04.69\00:01:08.18 and behave in the church. 00:01:08.19\00:01:10.30 That's just the main point. 00:01:10.31\00:01:11.88 What a wonderful portrait we have here. 00:01:11.89\00:01:14.81 Let's ask God to guide us as we continue on. 00:01:14.82\00:01:18.56 Lord as we study now we need you 00:01:18.57\00:01:22.17 to open our eyes and to open our hearts. 00:01:22.18\00:01:25.47 We want not just to be informed, Lord, 00:01:25.48\00:01:27.88 but also inspired to follow you more clearly, 00:01:27.89\00:01:31.24 more closely, more dearly. 00:01:31.25\00:01:33.46 So, Lord, please come and teach us, 00:01:33.47\00:01:35.88 through your spirit, we pray. 00:01:35.89\00:01:37.34 In Jesus' name, Amen. Amen. 00:01:37.35\00:01:39.76 As we've been following the path of Jesus. 00:01:39.77\00:01:44.19 A path that took him from birth through baptism, 00:01:44.20\00:01:47.81 through temptations, through ministry 00:01:47.82\00:01:50.61 in Galilee of teaching and working miracles 00:01:50.62\00:01:54.08 and healings--now, we find his steps have turned. 00:01:54.09\00:01:57.57 They're headed towards Jerusalem. 00:01:57.58\00:01:59.06 He is in Jerusalem now, He's had a triumphal entry 00:01:59.07\00:02:02.66 and the opposition has been at every side. 00:02:02.67\00:02:08.55 Everywhere he turns they're looking to catch him. 00:02:08.56\00:02:11.11 They're looking to trap him as we saw from the test. 00:02:11.12\00:02:14.93 As we come to Chapter 23 this time and 24, 00:02:14.94\00:02:18.74 Ranko, what's ahead for us? 00:02:18.75\00:02:20.35 Yeah, Chapter 23 is actually the climax. 00:02:20.36\00:02:27.01 Upto this point Jesus is always kind toward Pharisees. 00:02:27.02\00:02:31.79 He tried to answer them 00:02:31.80\00:02:33.23 but they're sinking deeper and deeper. 00:02:33.24\00:02:37.44 The animosity against Jesus. 00:02:37.45\00:02:41.30 Evidently there was nothing more to be done. 00:02:41.31\00:02:44.53 But let me tell you 00:02:44.54\00:02:45.53 that patience of Jesus was not in vain. 00:02:45.54\00:02:49.69 Some of these Pharisees, that they were Pentecost 00:02:49.70\00:02:53.53 as we read the Book of Acts, 00:02:53.54\00:02:55.23 they really responded the call of Holy Spirit. 00:02:55.24\00:02:58.79 When Peter preached that famous sermon 00:02:58.80\00:03:01.78 and they became Christians. 00:03:01.79\00:03:03.57 So we have encouragement to never give up on people. 00:03:03.58\00:03:07.51 Jesus never gave up but Jesus finally 00:03:07.52\00:03:10.16 had to make the public statement 00:03:10.17\00:03:11.62 about those Pharisees who really persisted 00:03:11.63\00:03:15.35 in the unbelief and the rejection of Jesus. 00:03:15.36\00:03:19.22 Actually they were those Pharisees 00:03:19.23\00:03:21.01 who until the very end 00:03:21.02\00:03:22.53 actually even brought Jesus to the cross. 00:03:22.54\00:03:24.83 Yes, yes and-- 00:03:24.84\00:03:26.49 It's not about all the Pharisees. 00:03:26.50\00:03:28.32 Many Pharisees, as we make statement, 00:03:28.33\00:03:31.32 became Christians later but significant number of them 00:03:31.33\00:03:34.91 together usually should- leaders, 00:03:34.92\00:03:37.09 they persisted and it was the time 00:03:37.10\00:03:39.78 for Jesus finally to expose them. 00:03:39.79\00:03:42.28 We must remember that 00:03:42.29\00:03:43.68 this is the close of his Earthly ministry. 00:03:43.69\00:03:46.57 And when He was crucified and raise 00:03:46.58\00:03:51.10 and will then soon ascend, people will be left wondering, 00:03:51.11\00:03:55.19 which is the correct path? Who really knows God? 00:03:55.20\00:03:59.65 Who is telling us about God? Is it Jesus? 00:03:59.66\00:04:03.39 Or is it what the Pharisees and the leaders have told? 00:04:03.40\00:04:05.73 So He's got to make it very clear to the public, 00:04:05.74\00:04:08.41 to the crowds, what is the true path. 00:04:08.42\00:04:11.79 And it's a strong message here. 00:04:11.80\00:04:14.78 Now Ranko, you're invited to go and speak many places. 00:04:14.79\00:04:17.64 I doubt if you've ever use this as your opening sermon. 00:04:17.65\00:04:20.51 No. It's a tough message. 00:04:20.52\00:04:23.01 Let's try to get little bit of the flavor 00:04:23.02\00:04:25.10 But I would like to remind us what we read 00:04:25.11\00:04:27.80 in the "Desire of Ages." Can you say? 00:04:27.81\00:04:30.21 Yes, certainly we want to remember 00:04:30.22\00:04:32.61 that Jesus spoke even these woes. 00:04:32.62\00:04:35.27 We call this chapter the woes in love. 00:04:35.28\00:04:38.18 There was tears in His voice as He's reaching out. 00:04:38.19\00:04:40.88 But let's listen to the words. 00:04:40.89\00:04:43.43 You know, many times we think 00:04:43.44\00:04:45.11 about winning friends and influencing people. 00:04:45.12\00:04:47.91 There's a books even on the subject and so forth. 00:04:47.92\00:04:50.02 This is not a sermon to preach 00:04:50.03\00:04:52.10 for the first time you're dealing with people. 00:04:52.11\00:04:54.48 This is the last call. 00:04:54.49\00:04:56.73 This is a time when you've got lay it all down 00:04:56.74\00:05:00.06 and say okay folks these are the issues, 00:05:00.07\00:05:02.29 now you've got to make a decision. 00:05:02.30\00:05:03.85 Glenn, we don't have even something close 00:05:03.86\00:05:06.89 to this at the beginning of Jesus ministry 00:05:06.90\00:05:09.22 No. Do you remember 00:05:09.23\00:05:10.22 even when we were in Chapter 12? 00:05:10.23\00:05:12.10 When the Pharisees they made that statement, 00:05:12.11\00:05:14.65 a blasphemy, against the Holy Spirit. 00:05:14.66\00:05:17.51 When Jesus talked about unpardonable sin 00:05:17.52\00:05:22.34 we never have any condemnation 00:05:22.35\00:05:24.43 from Jesus nothing, nothing even close. 00:05:24.44\00:05:27.49 But this is really the climax. 00:05:27.50\00:05:30.74 Let's get a little bit of the flavor. 00:05:30.75\00:05:32.99 We won't read all of this but I like to read a selection 00:05:33.00\00:05:36.19 so you can catch some of the thrust 00:05:36.20\00:05:40.41 some of the energy of this passage. 00:05:40.42\00:05:42.39 "Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, 00:05:42.40\00:05:44.83 'the scribes and Pharisees sit on Moses' seat. 00:05:44.84\00:05:47.68 So you practice and observe whatever they tell you. 00:05:47.69\00:05:50.41 But don't do what they do, 00:05:50.42\00:05:52.12 for they preach but do not practice.'" 00:05:52.13\00:05:54.53 We should pause right there, many times we think 00:05:54.54\00:05:57.19 that everything the Pharisees taught was wrong. No. 00:05:57.20\00:05:59.48 No. Jesus agrees with many of those teachings. 00:05:59.49\00:06:02.57 Much of what they thought was good. 00:06:02.58\00:06:04.54 But He says something about the way they're living. 00:06:04.55\00:06:07.31 Jesus actually calls them hypocrites. 00:06:07.32\00:06:10.05 We will go to verse 20-- 13, verse 27. 00:06:10.06\00:06:14.42 Actually 13, 15 where else? 27, how many times? 00:06:14.43\00:06:18.38 23, 25, 27, 29, how many times 00:06:18.39\00:06:24.84 Jesus used the word hypocrite. 00:06:24.85\00:06:27.66 Actually hypocrite was the word, 00:06:27.67\00:06:28.66 in the 1st century among Ancient Greeks, for actors. 00:06:28.67\00:06:32.36 Who in normal life they were one thing 00:06:32.37\00:06:35.06 when they were before people acting, 00:06:35.07\00:06:36.98 they were completely different things. 00:06:36.99\00:06:38.81 This is actually what the Pharisees were doing. 00:06:38.82\00:06:40.86 They were teaching many right things, 00:06:40.87\00:06:43.97 but there behavior was much louder 00:06:43.98\00:06:47.23 than what they were talking. 00:06:47.24\00:06:49.64 So they're wearing a mask. 00:06:49.65\00:06:50.64 They're pretending to be what they aren't. 00:06:50.65\00:06:52.36 And in honesty we would have to pause 00:06:52.37\00:06:54.37 and say there's a little bit of hypocrisy, 00:06:54.38\00:06:56.22 may be more than that, in each of us. 00:06:56.23\00:06:57.90 Oh, yeah. 00:06:57.91\00:06:58.90 We seldom show people our real true character 00:06:58.91\00:07:02.30 and Jesus takes off the masks here. 00:07:02.31\00:07:05.40 "They preach but they do practice. 00:07:05.41\00:07:08.14 They bind heavy burdens hard to bear, 00:07:08.15\00:07:10.03 lay them on men's shoulders. 00:07:10.04\00:07:11.54 They themselves will not move them with a finger." 00:07:11.55\00:07:14.35 So, the compassion of Christ is here. 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.97 He is speaking about the compassionless leadership 00:07:16.98\00:07:20.63 at that time. Verse 13, 00:07:20.64\00:07:23.28 "But woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! 00:07:23.29\00:07:25.59 You shut the kingdom of heaven against men. 00:07:25.60\00:07:28.08 For you neither enter yourselves 00:07:28.09\00:07:30.56 nor allow those who would enter to go in. 00:07:30.57\00:07:33.04 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, 00:07:33.05\00:07:37.02 for you traverse sea and land to make a single proselyte, 00:07:37.03\00:07:40.94 and when he becomes a proselyte or a convert 00:07:40.95\00:07:43.74 you make him twice as much a child of Hell as you are." 00:07:43.75\00:07:46.83 Ranko, these are hard statements. 00:07:46.84\00:07:48.88 You know, I teach a antibiotics class 00:07:48.89\00:07:50.78 and every once in a while I'll assign a student 00:07:50.79\00:07:53.05 to preach on this passage. 00:07:53.06\00:07:54.30 They have a hard time because this doesn't sound like 00:07:54.31\00:07:57.99 Jesus meek and mild. 00:07:58.00\00:07:59.08 This doesn't sound like the sweet and loving Jesus. 00:07:59.09\00:08:02.43 It seems harsh to say 00:08:02.44\00:08:04.18 "you make someone twice the son of hell as you are," 00:08:04.19\00:08:06.81 I don't think most preachers walk into the pulpit 00:08:06.82\00:08:09.43 and say something like that. We have to find out why? 00:08:09.44\00:08:11.64 "Woe to you blind guides" Verse 23, 00:08:11.65\00:08:15.34 "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" 00:08:15.35\00:08:18.57 Actually 23, is really-- 00:08:18.58\00:08:21.03 Let's look at that one little further. 00:08:21.04\00:08:22.91 It's somehow in nutshell 00:08:22.92\00:08:25.13 everything what Jesus said in verse 23. 00:08:25.14\00:08:27.62 "For you tithe, mint, and dill and cumin, 00:08:27.63\00:08:31.09 and you've neglected the weightier matters 00:08:31.10\00:08:32.96 of the law, justice and mercy and faith." 00:08:32.97\00:08:35.86 What's the weightier matters? What's the deeper things? 00:08:35.87\00:08:40.27 Care about people. It's that horizontal relation. 00:08:40.28\00:08:43.59 That's what we are talking. That's the main thread in-- 00:08:43.60\00:08:47.18 He's not saying it's wrong to tithe. 00:08:47.19\00:08:48.65 He is not saying it's wrong to do any of those things. 00:08:48.66\00:08:50.68 But if we do those really just actions 00:08:50.69\00:08:52.85 and we forget our relationship with one and another. 00:08:52.86\00:08:56.48 You see the observance of the law, 00:08:56.49\00:08:58.78 paying tithe and everything, is not a substitute 00:08:58.79\00:09:03.31 for the way how we treat the people. 00:09:03.32\00:09:05.44 You've said a lot right there. 00:09:05.45\00:09:07.22 Verse 25, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! 00:09:07.23\00:09:11.08 You cleanse outside of the cup and of the plate, 00:09:11.09\00:09:14.47 but inside they are full of extortion and rapacity." 00:09:14.48\00:09:18.19 So everything is up to the end of the chapter about-- 00:09:18.20\00:09:20.49 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, 00:09:20.50\00:09:22.41 white-washed tombs. 00:09:22.42\00:09:23.92 You're like dead men's bones. 00:09:23.93\00:09:25.61 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! 00:09:25.62\00:09:28.71 Truly I say to you all this 00:09:28.72\00:09:31.11 will come upon this generation." 00:09:31.12\00:09:32.70 But he concludes, we have to go to verses 37 00:09:32.71\00:09:36.52 This text now is very important. 00:09:36.53\00:09:37.93 Yes it's very precious. 00:09:37.94\00:09:38.93 Glenn, can you, can you read it. 00:09:38.94\00:09:40.01 "Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets, 00:09:40.02\00:09:43.52 stoning those who were sent to you. 00:09:43.53\00:09:45.49 "We should pause and think about Jesus' tone. 00:09:45.50\00:09:49.29 What was in His eyes? What was in his heart? 00:09:49.30\00:09:51.44 Ranko He was trying to wake people up. 00:09:51.45\00:09:53.31 If you're home was on fire 00:09:53.32\00:09:55.37 and you're fast asleep in the middle of night. 00:09:55.38\00:09:57.69 You don't want me just knocking on the door quietly. 00:09:57.70\00:10:01.33 You want me to shout. You want me to cry. 00:10:01.34\00:10:03.40 Whatever it takes to wake you up and say. 00:10:03.41\00:10:05.51 Your building is collapsing. 00:10:05.52\00:10:07.84 And their system was about to come down. 00:10:07.85\00:10:10.43 Actually what Jesus tried to say, "I tried to help you? 00:10:10.44\00:10:13.60 I did everything. You did not accept it. 00:10:13.61\00:10:16.54 Now the consequences will come to that." 00:10:16.55\00:10:19.11 And actually this is the introduction 00:10:19.12\00:10:20.62 to our next subject that we would will like to go. 00:10:20.63\00:10:22.78 I want those of you, who are listening, 00:10:22.79\00:10:24.59 to hear Jesus' words and His heart. 00:10:24.60\00:10:28.45 I believe sometimes the most difficult love 00:10:28.46\00:10:31.98 is the love of letting go. 00:10:31.99\00:10:33.94 You may have had a situation, relationship in your life. 00:10:33.95\00:10:36.50 A son, a loved one. You tried to reach them. 00:10:36.51\00:10:40.67 You tried to reach them and eventually 00:10:40.68\00:10:42.58 you had to honor their choice. 00:10:42.59\00:10:44.65 God does the same thing. He honors our choice. 00:10:44.66\00:10:47.07 And yet Jesus' heart is broken. 00:10:47.08\00:10:48.98 "O Jerusalem, killing the prophets, 00:10:48.99\00:10:51.17 stoning those who were sent to you, 00:10:51.18\00:10:52.72 how often I would have gathered your children together, 00:10:52.73\00:10:55.70 as a hen gathers her broods 00:10:55.71\00:10:57.19 under her wing and you would not. 00:10:57.20\00:10:59.32 Behold your house is forsaken and desolate." 00:10:59.33\00:11:03.72 This is his last public declaration 00:11:03.73\00:11:05.60 here for the crowds. "For I tell you, 00:11:05.61\00:11:07.97 you will not see me again. 00:11:07.98\00:11:09.77 Until you say blessed is he 00:11:09.78\00:11:11.72 who comes in name in Lord." 00:11:11.73\00:11:13.35 So, Glenn, let us try to see what we have here. 00:11:13.36\00:11:18.50 The disciples are there and they're listening 00:11:18.51\00:11:21.67 to what Jesus is to saying, "I tried Jerusalem, 00:11:21.68\00:11:26.68 everything to do in order to do bring you myself." 00:11:26.69\00:11:30.38 I mean and he's using even this metaphor 00:11:30.39\00:11:33.86 of a hen and chicken. 00:11:33.87\00:11:35.84 "And I do, I try to do everything 00:11:35.85\00:11:37.74 to put you under the wings of my protection. 00:11:37.75\00:11:41.22 Therefore your house," which is evidently the temple, 00:11:41.23\00:11:45.27 "will be left to you desolate." 00:11:45.28\00:11:48.47 The disciples are listening there 00:11:48.48\00:11:50.41 We have to understand 00:11:50.42\00:11:51.98 something very, very important. 00:11:51.99\00:11:54.87 That the Jewish people were very much familiar 00:11:54.88\00:11:59.36 with the Old Testament promises. 00:11:59.37\00:12:01.53 Let's keep in mind that in the gospel of Mathew 00:12:01.54\00:12:04.98 everything that the Jesus does is the fulfillment 00:12:04.99\00:12:08.66 of the Old Testament prophecies. Mathew wrote it. 00:12:08.67\00:12:11.24 So Mathew was so much in the-- 00:12:11.25\00:12:13.50 and they were listening to what Jesus said. 00:12:13.51\00:12:15.30 According to those Old Testament prophecy, 00:12:15.31\00:12:19.24 one day God will bless Israel and Palestine, 00:12:19.25\00:12:25.88 Jerusalem will be established. 00:12:25.89\00:12:28.86 Okay, the Messiah would come 00:12:28.87\00:12:32.30 establish his kingdom and Jerusalem, 00:12:32.31\00:12:36.72 with its temple will become the centre of the World. 00:12:36.73\00:12:42.44 By the way there are numerous Old Testament passages 00:12:42.45\00:12:46.18 that talks about the centrality of Jerusalem 00:12:46.19\00:12:49.40 with its temple in the future Messianic Kingdom. 00:12:49.41\00:12:53.08 There are maps, you had Jerusalem at the side. 00:12:53.09\00:12:55.56 Actually no temple- 00:12:55.57\00:13:03.47 it's the end of the world. 00:13:03.48\00:13:04.90 Without the temple, no temple no Messianic Kingdom. 00:13:04.91\00:13:07.63 The end of the temple is the end of the world. 00:13:07.64\00:13:13.21 the disciples are listening to what Jesus is saying. 00:13:13.22\00:13:16.82 But you know you listen something you don't want 00:13:16.83\00:13:19.46 suddenly to interrupt Jesus and ask questions. 00:13:19.47\00:13:23.00 But then they were leaving Jerusalem-- 00:13:23.01\00:13:24.78 by the way, this was Jesus' last time in the temple. 00:13:24.79\00:13:30.11 Jesus is leaving. As they were leaving the temple 00:13:30.12\00:13:32.77 we still have that original stairways there in Jerusalem. 00:13:32.78\00:13:35.73 They were coming out going through the door. 00:13:35.74\00:13:38.42 But disciples they wanted to have a kind 00:13:38.43\00:13:41.46 to start conversation with Jesus. 00:13:41.47\00:13:43.27 To ask him what he mean 00:13:43.28\00:13:44.27 "your house will be left to desolate?" 00:13:44.28\00:13:46.64 And I would like just to take some moments 00:13:46.65\00:13:48.75 to read the first three verses because this is very important 00:13:48.76\00:13:51.60 to understand for what is coming after that. 00:13:51.61\00:13:54.83 And just before we read I want to make sure 00:13:54.84\00:13:56.40 we understand Jesus did not give up. 00:13:56.41\00:13:58.61 Because he still went to the cross. 00:13:58.62\00:14:01.06 For those very Pharisees. 00:14:01.07\00:14:02.64 For those very people who were not responding 00:14:02.65\00:14:04.73 at that time, many did respond later. 00:14:04.74\00:14:07.19 Mathew 24 verse 1, "Jesus left the temple 00:14:07.20\00:14:10.75 and He is going away, when his disciples came 00:14:10.76\00:14:12.77 to point out to Him the buildings of the temple. 00:14:12.78\00:14:15.36 But he answered them, 'You see all these do you not. 00:14:15.37\00:14:19.37 Truly I said you there were not be left here 00:14:19.38\00:14:22.82 one stone upon another that will not be not be thrown.'" 00:14:22.83\00:14:25.90 What a shock it must have been. 00:14:25.91\00:14:27.70 And the verse 3, "As He sat upon the Mount of Olives, 00:14:27.71\00:14:31.09 the disciples came to him privately and saying, 00:14:31.10\00:14:33.20 'Tell us when will this be. And what will be the signs 00:14:33.21\00:14:36.56 of your coming and of the close of the age.'" 00:14:36.57\00:14:39.43 Let's deal with this text after the break. 00:14:39.44\00:14:41.43 All right, Ranko, it's so good to explore this. 00:14:41.44\00:14:45.11 You've stirred up some questions. 00:14:45.12\00:14:46.48 We're gonna come right back after our break 00:14:46.49\00:14:48.12 to go into one of these most powerful chapters, Mathew 24. 00:14:48.13\00:14:51.58 You won't want to miss this, we'll be right back. 00:14:51.59\00:14:53.86
