Welcome back, we're exploring the two great commandments 00:00:01.01\00:00:04.50 that Jesus explains 00:00:04.51\00:00:06.98 and declaresin Matthew, Chapter 22. 00:00:06.99\00:00:10.83 Ranko, you've, you've helped us understand a little bit 00:00:10.84\00:00:13.78 but I sense some more here. 00:00:13.79\00:00:15.23 And I also sense this is personal. 00:00:15.24\00:00:17.88 Yeah, Glenn, I hope that the viewers will notice 00:00:17.89\00:00:22.17 that I'm very charismatic about this 00:00:22.18\00:00:26.59 in talking bout this passage 00:00:26.60\00:00:28.27 because when I talk about my previous life, 00:00:28.28\00:00:32.38 um, I had hard time in loving people 00:00:32.39\00:00:36.81 and relating to people and actually, 00:00:36.82\00:00:39.40 God used this passage to change my own life. 00:00:39.41\00:00:44.38 That's why this passage is so much important to me 00:00:44.39\00:00:48.77 and I would like share 00:00:48.78\00:00:50.08 actually in dealing with this text I want to share 00:00:50.09\00:00:53.31 with the viewers how God changed my own life. 00:00:53.32\00:00:55.82 Glenn, you know, when we talked to department 00:00:55.83\00:00:57.96 usually I'm perceived by students to be a loving teacher 00:00:57.97\00:01:00.67 Actually, it happened about thirty years ago 00:01:00.68\00:01:03.57 they would not have such opinion about me. 00:01:03.58\00:01:05.68 I believe that God can change everybody, 00:01:05.69\00:01:08.48 God changed me 00:01:08.49\00:01:09.92 and dear viewers, I just want to tell you 00:01:09.93\00:01:12.23 if God was able to change me God can also change you. 00:01:12.24\00:01:17.17 All right, so we've explored the fact 00:01:17.18\00:01:19.17 that these two commandments are very much connected. 00:01:19.18\00:01:22.16 So Glenn, the first commandment, 00:01:22.17\00:01:24.39 I don't want now to talk too much about others, 00:01:24.40\00:01:27.55 because evidently Christians, 00:01:27.56\00:01:29.69 they try to have that right relationships with God 00:01:29.70\00:01:33.02 they're struggling, but we can notice 00:01:33.03\00:01:35.62 and I believe that the viewers will agree with me 00:01:35.63\00:01:38.01 that the problem that we have in our lives is how generally 00:01:38.02\00:01:43.64 to relate to other people. 00:01:43.65\00:01:45.36 These are struggles of all us. 00:01:45.37\00:01:47.00 How can I love my enemy? 00:01:47.01\00:01:48.72 How can I do the people 00:01:48.73\00:01:50.15 when they don't treat me justly etcetera? 00:01:50.16\00:01:52.47 How to practice it? 00:01:52.48\00:01:53.59 So let's try to see what we have in the text. 00:01:53.60\00:01:55.83 Ranko, you're implying that we even though we're convert, 00:01:55.84\00:01:59.26 even though we're baptized there're still some struggles. 00:01:59.27\00:02:02.02 There are strugglers 00:02:02.03\00:02:03.24 and genuine Christians are struggling with this. 00:02:03.25\00:02:05.57 Wherever I go people are asking me 00:02:05.58\00:02:07.25 many, many questions about how to apply, 00:02:07.26\00:02:10.14 how to put in-- 00:02:10.15\00:02:11.14 Scripture's realistic here. 00:02:11.15\00:02:12.40 Yes, so Glenn, let's go to the second commandment, 00:02:12.41\00:02:15.27 "you shall love your neighbor as yourself." 00:02:15.28\00:02:17.55 By the way if we go to the book, 00:02:17.56\00:02:19.51 to the, to James, 00:02:19.52\00:02:22.96 James, Chapter 2, verse 8. 00:02:22.97\00:02:25.25 He calls, "you shall love your neighbor as yourself, 00:02:25.26\00:02:27.80 as the royal commandment." 00:02:27.81\00:02:29.53 By the way, do you know, that several times 00:02:29.54\00:02:33.18 in the New Testament this royal commandment, 00:02:33.19\00:02:35.95 "you shall love your neighbor as yourself" 00:02:35.96\00:02:37.43 is repeated in New Testament. 00:02:37.44\00:02:38.84 Never the first four, only this. 00:02:38.85\00:02:41.42 Evidently this is what people are struggling about. 00:02:41.43\00:02:43.83 So let's go to that. 00:02:43.84\00:02:44.92 Glenn, you need now to help me. 00:02:44.93\00:02:47.31 You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 00:02:47.32\00:02:50.83 How many parts do you have in this commandment? 00:02:50.84\00:02:54.34 I don't want to put you on the spot. 00:02:54.35\00:02:55.63 It's 3 parts. 00:02:55.64\00:02:57.13 Which are the 3 parts? 00:02:57.14\00:02:58.20 The first part is the imperative. 00:02:58.21\00:03:00.58 I don't like to use the expression, command. 00:03:00.59\00:03:03.16 This is not command, imperative, you shall love. 00:03:03.17\00:03:06.65 The next one, the question is, 00:03:06.66\00:03:09.06 whom, whom shall I love? 00:03:09.07\00:03:11.52 The answer is, your neighbor 00:03:11.53\00:03:14.20 and the third part is how shall I love? 00:03:14.21\00:03:17.66 And the answer is, as you love yourself, 00:03:17.67\00:03:22.76 and I know that many aspects of this, 00:03:22.77\00:03:26.80 what we just presented, is misunderstood. 00:03:26.81\00:03:28.84 So let's go piece by piece. 00:03:28.85\00:03:30.92 The first one is, you shall love. 00:03:30.93\00:03:35.62 You see, the word you shall love, 00:03:35.63\00:03:39.11 that Jesus employed here 00:03:39.12\00:03:40.82 is found here in the gospel of Matthew. 00:03:40.83\00:03:42.91 It's actually the word agapao, 00:03:42.92\00:03:45.42 from which the word agape comes. 00:03:45.43\00:03:47.34 This word is, refers to the love 00:03:47.35\00:03:50.36 which is actually of divine origin, 00:03:50.37\00:03:54.48 unknown to ancient Greeks. 00:03:54.49\00:03:56.51 It's specifically the biblical concept, 00:03:56.52\00:04:00.50 you see that love, agape love, 00:04:00.51\00:04:03.08 that only God possesses. 00:04:03.09\00:04:04.92 We're not born with that love, 00:04:04.93\00:04:06.44 it's actually imparted to us as a,as a gift from God. 00:04:06.45\00:04:10.83 Okay these-- 00:04:10.84\00:04:12.16 Ranko, if I, if I might just intrude here for a moment. 00:04:12.17\00:04:14.95 Please, please. 00:04:14.96\00:04:15.95 I think many times people feel that love is a feeling. 00:04:15.96\00:04:19.28 But I don't feel like loving them. 00:04:19.29\00:04:20.95 This is not about, about feeling, 00:04:20.96\00:04:23.33 you see, this is the gift from God. 00:04:23.34\00:04:24.94 This love is all inclusive. 00:04:24.95\00:04:28.28 You remember when we talked in the Sermon 00:04:28.29\00:04:30.74 on the Mount is we have to love all people as God, 00:04:30.75\00:04:34.68 thus we have to be perfect as God. 00:04:34.69\00:04:36.36 Because He gives His rain, 00:04:36.37\00:04:38.09 He gives His sun to both good and evil. 00:04:38.10\00:04:40.48 It includes all people. 00:04:40.49\00:04:41.93 Number one, it's all inclusive. 00:04:41.94\00:04:43.72 Second, it's unconditional. 00:04:43.73\00:04:47.14 I love this love agape not because people love me 00:04:47.15\00:04:54.92 but so many times despite the fact they love me. 00:04:54.93\00:04:58.24 When I was a young person an idea came to my mind. 00:04:58.25\00:05:03.14 I heard something very similar and it brought me to think. 00:05:03.15\00:05:05.96 This love is like a rose, flower, okay, a rose. 00:05:05.97\00:05:10.53 You know, you take rose from the bush, 00:05:10.54\00:05:12.52 you put to your nostrils, 00:05:12.53\00:05:14.44 boy, such a very nice aroma. 00:05:14.45\00:05:17.12 Then you take that rose, put it down on the ground, 00:05:17.13\00:05:20.33 you trample, put in the dust, do what ever you want. 00:05:20.34\00:05:23.35 Take that rose, put back to your nostrils, 00:05:23.36\00:05:26.85 it's still the same aroma. 00:05:26.86\00:05:28.66 This is what this love is all about. 00:05:28.67\00:05:31.04 This is what Jesus did. 00:05:31.05\00:05:32.74 He loved His disciples whether they were good 00:05:32.75\00:05:36.01 or sometimes they struggle with issues. 00:05:36.02\00:05:38.12 He loved even Jerusalem that rejected Him. 00:05:38.13\00:05:41.28 He cried over Jerusalem, even on the cross 00:05:41.29\00:05:43.74 when He was being crucified. 00:05:43.75\00:05:45.23 "Father, forgive them 00:05:45.24\00:05:46.56 because they don't know what they do." 00:05:46.57\00:05:48.07 This is the first one. 00:05:48.08\00:05:49.51 But the second one also provide clarification to the first one. 00:05:49.52\00:05:53.45 Who are those that we are to love? 00:05:53.46\00:05:58.44 You shall love it. 00:05:58.45\00:05:59.56 The answer is, your neighbor. 00:05:59.57\00:06:02.63 Actually, the Greek word Plésion, 00:06:02.64\00:06:05.72 that is used, let me translate in English 00:06:05.73\00:06:08.15 as the word neighbor is a correct translation. 00:06:08.16\00:06:11.41 In my language the word, believes me, means neighbor. 00:06:11.42\00:06:15.55 But what is the meaning of the word neighbor, Glenn? 00:06:15.56\00:06:18.03 It's old English. 00:06:18.04\00:06:20.70 What is the meaning of neig--neighhbor? 00:06:20.71\00:06:23.67 We usually think of the one who's near by. 00:06:23.68\00:06:25.13 Somebody who's... 00:06:25.14\00:06:26.13 This is exactly what Jesus taught. 00:06:26.14\00:06:28.69 You see, it's very easy to me to stand here 00:06:28.70\00:06:31.64 in front of camera and say to our viewers, 00:06:31.65\00:06:34.53 I love you. 00:06:34.54\00:06:36.72 It's very easy to love people who are faraway from me, 00:06:36.73\00:06:40.34 I don't know them. 00:06:40.35\00:06:43.24 And so many times I hear stories about the mission field 00:06:43.25\00:06:47.90 People are hungry, people are suffering. 00:06:47.91\00:06:49.57 can be so, you know, 00:06:49.58\00:06:51.91 caught with my emotions and take my wallet 00:06:51.92\00:06:54.87 and take money to send to the mission field. 00:06:54.88\00:06:56.62 But when I'm here in the classroom, 00:06:56.63\00:06:58.28 when I see my neighbor, 00:06:58.29\00:07:00.27 the student who's there in there 00:07:00.28\00:07:01.93 who's suffering financially, then I calculate, 00:07:01.94\00:07:04.76 he doesn't know to deal with the money, etcetera. 00:07:04.77\00:07:07.09 its much easier in our lives to love people who are faraway 00:07:07.10\00:07:11.89 than those who are our neighbors. 00:07:11.90\00:07:14.61 Glenn, who's your first neighbor? 00:07:14.62\00:07:18.27 Right in your own home. 00:07:18.28\00:07:19.52 Your wife, next one, children. 00:07:19.53\00:07:21.68 Do you know that it is the most difficult thing 00:07:21.69\00:07:24.38 to love my wife and my children? 00:07:24.39\00:07:26.96 And it might be sometimes difficult for them to love us. 00:07:26.97\00:07:30.21 When we go to restaurant 00:07:30.22\00:07:31.82 and how easy to offer the chair 00:07:31.83\00:07:35.27 to another person, etcetera, 00:07:35.28\00:07:37.22 but when my wife comes, how do I treat her? 00:07:37.23\00:07:39.93 I remember so many times and I know that God forgave me. 00:07:39.94\00:07:44.01 I try, I was always patience 00:07:44.02\00:07:46.86 with young people, trying to help them. 00:07:46.87\00:07:48.75 When they ask me question 00:07:48.76\00:07:49.76 I will sit, let me explain to you 00:07:49.77\00:07:51.08 and then I come home, I'm tired 00:07:51.09\00:07:52.66 and my own children ask me something question, 00:07:52.67\00:07:55.36 please leave me alone, I'm tired. 00:07:55.37\00:07:57.15 You know, who's next my neighbor? 00:08:01.48\00:08:03.64 My neighbor, next house they are. 00:08:03.65\00:08:05.28 I'm coming from the part of the world 00:08:05.29\00:08:07.42 where neighbors are always fighting against each other. 00:08:07.43\00:08:09.65 She can came to my side, you know. 00:08:09.66\00:08:11.90 Who's next of my neighbor? 00:08:11.91\00:08:15.51 The people that are working there. 00:08:15.52\00:08:17.05 When you come for the first time 00:08:17.06\00:08:18.99 to your office, everybody is nice. 00:08:19.00\00:08:21.31 You love everybody, 00:08:21.32\00:08:22.61 but when you become familiar with people, 00:08:22.62\00:08:24.92 when they're close to them, 00:08:24.93\00:08:26.04 when they're really your neighbors. 00:08:26.05\00:08:27.14 That's the test. 00:08:27.15\00:08:28.62 This is the test of my love. 00:08:28.63\00:08:31.01 I know, my wife watch me preaching about this 00:08:31.02\00:08:34.63 and then I would, I would sit in my car 00:08:34.64\00:08:37.68 there in PMCA on campus of Andrews University. 00:08:37.69\00:08:40.58 I'm going to the church, Sabbath morning, 00:08:40.59\00:08:42.08 I'm driving my car and suddenly front of me 00:08:42.09\00:08:44.08 there's that, that shiny car flip flop me 00:08:44.09\00:08:47.19 cut the way, I almost hit there, 00:08:47.20\00:08:49.78 you know, that car 00:08:49.79\00:08:51.37 and there is something, that anger within me. 00:08:51.38\00:08:54.14 You know, students from Andrews 00:08:54.15\00:08:55.55 driving there without thinking 00:08:55.56\00:08:56.75 and my wife said, keep in mind 00:08:56.76\00:08:58.29 at that this moment he is very close to you, 00:08:58.30\00:09:00.57 he's your neighbor 00:09:00.58\00:09:01.58 And suddenly how my attitude changes. 00:09:01.59\00:09:04.77 Yes. 00:09:04.78\00:09:05.91 My neighbor. 00:09:05.92\00:09:07.55 Actually, I remember when I preachedthere in Chicago 00:09:07.56\00:09:11.75 I preached about that and I try to tell people, 00:09:11.76\00:09:14.23 you see, it's very hard to love our neighbors 00:09:14.24\00:09:16.91 But if you want to love people, 00:09:16.92\00:09:18.93 you have to make them your neighbors. 00:09:18.94\00:09:21.30 It makes sense?
