00:03:32.58\00:03:35.59 What our Lord faced is really something-- 00:03:35.60\00:03:38.39 verse 34. 00:03:38.40\00:03:39.39 So we have one of these now occasions. 00:03:39.40\00:03:41.35 The Pharisees now it's there turn. 00:03:41.36\00:03:43.13 It's there turn to attack. 00:03:43.14\00:03:44.46 Yeah. 00:03:44.47\00:03:45.46 "But when the Pharisees heard 00:03:45.47\00:03:46.47 that he had silenced 00:03:46.48\00:03:47.47 the Sadducees, they came together. 00:03:47.48\00:03:49.60 And one of them, a lawyer, 00:03:49.61\00:03:50.60 asked him a question, to test him. 00:03:50.61\00:03:52.87 Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law? 00:03:52.88\00:03:57.34 And he said to him, "you shall love the Lord, 00:03:57.35\00:03:59.88 your God with all your heart and with all your soul." 00:03:59.89\00:04:02.11 with all your mind." 00:04:02.12\00:04:03.19 This is the great and first commandment 00:04:03.20\00:04:05.25 and the second is like it. 00:04:05.26\00:04:07.34 You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 00:04:07.35\00:04:09.28 On these two commandments depend all the law 00:04:09.29\00:04:11.87 and the prophets." 00:04:11.88\00:04:12.93 Very familiar passage. 00:04:12.94\00:04:14.59 I know that our viewer's doesn't matter 00:04:14.60\00:04:20.51 if they are too much familiar with the Bible. 00:04:20.52\00:04:22.97 But almost everybody is familiar 00:04:22.98\00:04:25.70 with these two commandments 00:04:25.71\00:04:27.17 that actually Jesus stated here. 00:04:27.18\00:04:29.66 And this is probably the summary 00:04:29.67\00:04:32.65 of the entire gospel. 00:04:32.66\00:04:33.82 By the way, can I be, can I be so frank and to say 00:04:33.83\00:04:37.53 according to Jesus, this is the summary of the entire Bible. 00:04:37.54\00:04:41.81 The law and the prophets is actually the Bible... 00:04:41.82\00:04:46.47 of Jesus time. 00:04:46.48\00:04:47.84 New Testament was not in existence. 00:04:47.85\00:04:49.49 Jesus today would say, 00:04:49.50\00:04:51.02 on these two commandments depend the whole, 00:04:51.03\00:04:55.67 the whole law and the prophet's Old Testament 00:04:55.68\00:04:57.86 and the gospels. 00:04:57.87\00:04:59.50 This is actually what entire Bible is all about. 00:04:59.51\00:05:02.77 So probably we should take little bit more time 00:05:02.78\00:05:05.03 to understand because this is the summary 00:05:05.04\00:05:08.07 of all biblical teaching. 00:05:08.08\00:05:10.08 All right, so he comes with the question, 00:05:10.09\00:05:12.90 what is the greatest commandment? 00:05:12.91\00:05:14.29 What is the greatest commandment in the law? 00:05:14.30\00:05:17.02 This was a trap to Jesus. 00:05:17.03\00:05:19.29 You know, 00:05:19.30\00:05:22.48 if you ask a Pharisee. 00:05:22.49\00:05:23.84 which is the greatest commandment? 00:05:23.85\00:05:25.27 they would say the Sabbath. 00:05:25.28\00:05:28.03 And Jesus could say the Sabbath. 00:05:28.04\00:05:29.52 you say that the Sabbath is the greatest commandment, 00:05:29.53\00:05:33.13 what about not to kill Other human beings? 00:05:33.14\00:05:36.82 If Jesus said, not to kill-- 00:05:36.83\00:05:38.00 Oh, what about the Sabbath? 00:05:38.01\00:05:40.39 See, this also a trap. 00:05:40.40\00:05:41.52 Sure, it's like asking a parent who is your favorite child. 00:05:41.53\00:05:44.04 Yes, yes. 00:05:44.05\00:05:45.04 You know, you can't even say 00:05:45.05\00:05:46.25 which of the Ten Commandments is most important. 00:05:46.26\00:05:48.83 And then Jesus made the statement 00:05:48.84\00:05:50.75 that there're two commandments 00:05:50.76\00:05:52.60 and usually 00:05:52.61\00:05:54.74 if you read it superficially without notice 00:05:54.75\00:05:58.14 how would Jesus said was very paradoxical. 00:05:58.15\00:06:01.17 And I will like us to pay attention to that 00:06:01.18\00:06:03.06 because the beauty of Jesus' answer 00:06:03.07\00:06:06.84 give us to Christian a powerful message. 00:06:06.85\00:06:10.03 Number one, is do we notice something, 00:06:10.04\00:06:13.73 Jesus said-- 00:06:13.74\00:06:15.99 what is that? 00:06:16.00\00:06:17.61 "They said, which is the greatest commandment?" 00:06:17.62\00:06:19.63 Thirty seven. 00:06:19.64\00:06:20.63 Thirty six and thirty seven. 00:06:20.64\00:06:22.38 Jesus said, "You shall love the Lord, 00:06:22.39\00:06:24.27 your God with all your heart, with all your soul, 00:06:24.28\00:06:27.31 with all your mind." 00:06:27.32\00:06:28.34 This is in Greek the greatest and the foremost 00:06:28.35\00:06:35.67 or Greek text says, the first commandment. 00:06:35.68\00:06:40.32 And nothing unusual. 00:06:40.33\00:06:42.07 Glenn, can you imagine? 00:06:42.08\00:06:43.21 I tell you-- you know, 00:06:43.22\00:06:44.43 I am teaching my class and in the class 00:06:44.44\00:06:48.25 there is a student 6'.3" tall. 00:06:48.26\00:06:52.73 He is the tallest in the class 00:06:52.74\00:06:55.71 but you know, there is another student, 00:06:55.72\00:06:57.46 he's as tall as the first one. 00:06:57.47\00:07:00.14 What would you say to him? 00:07:00.15\00:07:02.56 that first student that I mentioned 00:07:02.57\00:07:04.23 he's not the tallest, 00:07:04.24\00:07:06.01 if you have another person who's tall? 00:07:06.02\00:07:08.24 Here we have the first paradox. 00:07:08.25\00:07:10.45 Jesus said this is the greatest commandment 00:07:10.46\00:07:13.22 but what do we have next? 00:07:13.23\00:07:15.59 But the second commandment is as great. 00:07:15.60\00:07:19.58 I am paraphrasing, as great as the first one 00:07:19.59\00:07:23.43 and the second commandment is 00:07:23.44\00:07:25.85 you shall love your neighbor as yourself. 00:07:25.86\00:07:28.38 We have here a kind of paradox. 00:07:28.39\00:07:31.63 But actually, from the stand point of the Bible 00:07:31.64\00:07:35.71 and God's stand point this is not a paradox. 00:07:35.72\00:07:40.19 You know, we as a people we apply that greatest 00:07:40.20\00:07:45.26 and not as great as the first one 00:07:45.27\00:07:47.69 to many different things in this. 00:07:47.70\00:07:50.09 I like to point something, you know, God created Adam 00:07:50.10\00:07:54.41 that's why he's greatest and Eve is the second 00:07:54.42\00:07:57.71 that's why man-- 00:07:57.72\00:08:00.90 in the Bible, the fact that something is first 00:08:00.91\00:08:05.89 makes it great but does not put 00:08:05.90\00:08:09.67 the second one on the less importance. 00:08:09.68\00:08:13.16 So you're not talking about greatest 00:08:13.17\00:08:14.83 and the other one is inferior. 00:08:14.84\00:08:16.00 Is inferior. 00:08:16.01\00:08:17.00 What Jesus is talking here about, 00:08:17.01\00:08:19.12 there is something that is first 00:08:19.13\00:08:21.26 the first doesn't make it greater than the second one. 00:08:21.27\00:08:26.28 It means that first must come as first 00:08:26.29\00:08:29.85 and the second is always the second 00:08:29.86\00:08:32.19 it's never the first. 00:08:32.20\00:08:33.91 So let's explain what we have here. 00:08:33.92\00:08:36.65 It means that the two commandments, 00:08:36.66\00:08:40.09 the first one, is we shall love God, 00:08:40.10\00:08:45.15 with all your heart it means that this is the first 00:08:45.16\00:08:49.15 All the relationships they actually begin with this. 00:08:49.16\00:08:53.78 We're talking here about 00:08:53.79\00:08:55.51 that vertical relationship with God, okay. 00:08:55.52\00:08:58.95 Then there is the second one, the second is second 00:08:58.96\00:09:03.26 never the first but it is not inferior 00:09:03.27\00:09:06.31 it's not of less importance. 00:09:06.32\00:09:08.77 It means the second comes only after the first one 00:09:08.78\00:09:11.54 Let's explain it. 00:09:11.55\00:09:12.63 We can have a proper relationship 00:09:12.64\00:09:15.63 with fellow human beings. 00:09:15.64\00:09:16.77 We can love our fellow human beings. 00:09:16.78\00:09:19.35 We can be on that horizontal relationships 00:09:19.36\00:09:21.39 only that after we have established 00:09:21.40\00:09:25.35 that firm vertical relationship with God. 00:09:25.36\00:09:28.09 You know, Glenn, as you mention 00:09:28.10\00:09:29.77 I lived in completely different society 00:09:29.78\00:09:31.93 and that society was completely atheistic. 00:09:31.94\00:09:36.02 There was denial of God everywhere 00:09:36.03\00:09:39.01 in newspapers, in the textbooks, 00:09:39.02\00:09:40.99 everywhere in the denial of God. 00:09:41.00\00:09:43.14 But there was a strong emphasis, 00:09:43.15\00:09:45.15 we're all brothers and we have to respect, 00:09:45.16\00:09:47.94 we have to love each other. 00:09:47.95\00:09:50.42 So they follow the second commandment. 00:09:50.43\00:09:52.34 The second commandment. 00:09:52.35\00:09:53.34 There is no first. 00:09:53.35\00:09:54.32 But they denied the first one and I noticed, 00:09:54.33\00:09:58.01 with that effort to stick to the relationships 00:09:58.02\00:10:03.19 on the horizontal level 00:10:03.20\00:10:04.50 actually people could not love each other. 00:10:04.51\00:10:07.77 They just tolerated each other. 00:10:07.78\00:10:10.52 This makes difference. 00:10:10.53\00:10:12.70 You see, only when we have 00:10:12.71\00:10:14.39 strong vertical relationship with God 00:10:14.40\00:10:16.55 we can genuinely love our fellow human beings. 00:10:16.56\00:10:20.65 If you deny God, if you do not establish those, 00:10:20.66\00:10:24.95 that vertical relationship with God 00:10:24.96\00:10:28.17 there's no love for fellow human beings. 00:10:28.18\00:10:30.08 You can tolerate them, how long do you tolerate them? 00:10:30.09\00:10:33.29 As long as they tolerate you. 00:10:33.30\00:10:35.40 That's what happened in my country, 00:10:35.41\00:10:36.71 people stopped tolerating each other 00:10:36.72\00:10:38.56 the war came and civil war came 00:10:38.57\00:10:41.25 and this is actually what happened in my country. 00:10:41.26\00:10:43.50 So this is the first thing Jesus, emphasized. 00:10:43.51\00:10:46.11 You cannot, you cannot have 00:10:46.12\00:10:48.85 a strong horizontal relationship with fellow human beings. 00:10:48.86\00:10:52.47 if you do not have a strong vertical relationship with God. 00:10:52.48\00:10:56.14 Distorted vertical relationships with God, 00:10:56.15\00:10:59.61 leads to distorted relationships with fell ow human beings. 00:10:59.62\00:11:03.31 I certainly hope we got that because we see it's so often. 00:11:03.32\00:11:06.95 We become like the God, we worship. 00:11:06.96\00:11:08.81 And if we don't understand who God is 00:11:08.82\00:11:10.80 we have a distorted view of him, 00:11:10.81\00:11:12.52 it will come out in our behavior towards others. 00:11:12.53\00:11:15.39 Actually we go to the Old Testament. 00:11:15.40\00:11:17.62 the Old Testament, whenever the people of Israel, 00:11:17.63\00:11:20.98 departed from God, 00:11:20.99\00:11:22.79 distorted that vertical relationship with God. 00:11:22.80\00:11:26.62 What was the message of the prophets? 00:11:26.63\00:11:28.56 You oppress the poor, you make the widow to suffer, 00:11:28.57\00:11:32.70 you treat people in that harsh way, it's always. 00:11:32.71\00:11:36.63 I would like another case in the book of Romans, 00:11:36.64\00:11:40.54 we see from verses 18, Paul talks about the Gentiles 00:11:40.55\00:11:45.18 who had opportunity to know God They rejected God. 00:11:45.19\00:11:49.61 They didn't want to glorify God, 00:11:49.62\00:11:51.30 automatically there is all kind of sins in their lives 00:11:51.31\00:11:55.21 against the humanity that happens, 00:11:55.22\00:11:57.06 it's always. 00:11:57.07\00:11:58.27 Right relationship with God 00:11:58.28\00:11:59.80 leads to the right horizontal relationships 00:11:59.81\00:12:03.64 with fellow human beings. 00:12:03.65\00:12:05.02 Distorted vertical relationships with God 00:12:05.03\00:12:07.49 leads to the distorted horizontal relationships 00:12:07.50\00:12:11.27 with fellow human beings. 00:12:11.28\00:12:12.52 This is the first paradox. 00:12:12.53\00:12:13.59 The second paradox is, Glenn. 00:12:13.60\00:12:15.86 He says, you shall love God, you shall love your neighbor. 00:12:15.87\00:12:23.52 Do you see here any paradox? 00:12:23.53\00:12:24.82 Glenn, can you imagine you are there in the classroom 00:12:24.83\00:12:29.08 and there are two students, they're fighting. 00:12:29.09\00:12:31.20 They cannot stand each other. 00:12:31.21\00:12:32.83 You invite them there to your office 00:12:32.84\00:12:34.62 and say, "hey, I don't like your behavior." 00:12:34.63\00:12:37.74 If you do not change your attitude toward each other 00:12:37.75\00:12:41.81 I am failing you the class. 00:12:41.82\00:12:43.91 You have to love each other 00:12:43.92\00:12:45.55 and they leave your office hugging each other. 00:12:45.56\00:12:48.40 Now they love each other 00:12:48.41\00:12:49.48 because you issue the commandment. 00:12:49.49\00:12:51.83 Can you force somebody? 00:12:51.84\00:12:53.35 can you command to two human beings. 00:12:53.36\00:12:56.75 You have a family, husband and wife. 00:12:56.76\00:12:58.37 They're fighting against each other. 00:12:58.38\00:12:59.95 They come to the court they want to divorce 00:12:59.96\00:13:01.70 and judge said, go home. 00:13:01.71\00:13:03.02 If you do not stop fighting against each other 00:13:03.03\00:13:07.00 if you don't love each other, you'll go to the prison. 00:13:07.01\00:13:09.62 And they are hugging each other, 00:13:09.63\00:13:10.90 now they love each other. 00:13:10.91\00:13:11.90 Does it work like that? 00:13:11.91\00:13:12.88 No, that's external. 00:13:12.89\00:13:14.62 So was, Jesus, realistic here? 00:13:14.63\00:13:17.58 You're asking questions that I know you want answers. 00:13:17.59\00:13:20.17 Actually Jesus does not say love each other. 00:13:20.18\00:13:23.14 You said, you shall love God, 00:13:23.15\00:13:26.70 you shall love your fellow, fellow believer. 00:13:26.71\00:13:30.24 As that one person said, in the book 'The Desire of Ages' 00:13:30.25\00:13:36.60 said that every commandment of God 00:13:36.61\00:13:39.81 is actually God's promise to us. 00:13:39.82\00:13:42.66 He's bidding us his enabling. 00:13:42.67\00:13:44.45 The human beings, it is impossible 00:13:44.46\00:13:47.49 but to God it's possible. 00:13:47.50\00:13:49.53 Actually what Jesus tried to tell us, 00:13:49.54\00:13:52.53 the fact that we realize that God exists, 00:13:52.54\00:13:56.17 what He did for us? 00:13:56.18\00:13:58.04 That I'm accepted by God will make me to love God 00:13:58.05\00:14:02.11 When I know, when I realize, what God did for me? 00:14:02.12\00:14:05.58 Will, make me to love my fellow human beings. 00:14:05.59\00:14:09.25 You know that text from first John, 00:14:09.26\00:14:11.91 we love because he first loved us. 00:14:11.92\00:14:16.93 This is really the promise not the real commandment. 00:14:16.94\00:14:20.66 So for our marriages, for our churches, 00:14:20.67\00:14:23.78 for our places of work, the way we increase our love 00:14:23.79\00:14:27.33 to one another is to increase our love for God. 00:14:27.34\00:14:30.45 Thank you, Ranko. 00:14:30.46\00:14:31.87 We're gonna be right back after a break 00:14:31.88\00:14:33.37 because we've got some more to explore here 00:14:33.38\00:14:35.57 in this fast ending gospel of Mathew. 00:14:35.58\00:14:37.54 We'll be right back. 00:14:37.55\00:14:38.54
