Welcome back. We've been exploring 00:00:01.20\00:00:03.07 this marvelous parable in Matthew Chapter 20. 00:00:03.08\00:00:06.77 It deals with the issue of salvation. 00:00:06.78\00:00:08.74 You know, Ranko, as we were talking about, 00:00:08.75\00:00:10.52 I was thinking about my parents 00:00:10.53\00:00:12.23 who spent their entire lives in mission service. 00:00:12.24\00:00:16.33 My dad spent four years in prison camp. 00:00:16.34\00:00:19.18 They served from the beginning of their lives. 00:00:19.19\00:00:21.48 They were the early morning laborers. 00:00:21.49\00:00:24.30 And then, you compare the thief on the cross. 00:00:24.31\00:00:28.13 Last moment-- He's messed up. 00:00:28.14\00:00:29.49 His life is a mess. He gives his heart to Jesus. 00:00:29.50\00:00:33.77 And yet, the same God gives the gift of salvation to both. 00:00:33.78\00:00:38.70 Actually, last year, I also buried my own father. 00:00:38.71\00:00:42.44 He knew Christ for exactly 60 years. 00:00:45.67\00:00:50.35 When he became a Christian, 00:00:50.36\00:00:51.71 his life was changed completely. 00:00:51.72\00:00:54.31 He embraced the Gospel message. 00:00:54.32\00:00:57.86 The only talk that he knew it was about Jesus Christ 00:00:57.87\00:01:01.40 what He did for me and he died. 00:01:01.41\00:01:03.80 But I meet very nice people 00:01:03.81\00:01:06.11 and may be they are some of those 00:01:06.12\00:01:08.56 among our viewers who may be, 00:01:08.57\00:01:11.20 are already the advanced age. 00:01:11.21\00:01:14.89 They heard about the Gospel message 00:01:14.90\00:01:16.88 and they wonder if God can forgive them, 00:01:16.89\00:01:19.27 if God can accept them. 00:01:19.28\00:01:22.18 I would like to tell you that the Gospel of Matthew is a-- 00:01:22.19\00:01:26.52 has a very encouraging message to all of us. 00:01:26.53\00:01:30.75 Even if you are 50, 60 and 80, 00:01:30.76\00:01:34.55 God is calling you come to Him. 00:01:34.56\00:01:39.14 That's no matter how long you have known Jesus Christ. 00:01:39.15\00:01:42.80 Of course, it will be good if you know Jesus Christ 00:01:42.81\00:01:45.07 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago. 00:01:45.08\00:01:47.81 But if this now an opportunity is take that opportunity, 00:01:47.82\00:01:52.71 accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior. 00:01:52.72\00:01:55.88 Salvation and His acceptance 00:01:55.89\00:01:58.13 is not based about your worst 00:01:58.14\00:02:00.33 on the years of the service. 00:02:00.34\00:02:02.26 It is on your complete dedication to Him 00:02:02.27\00:02:06.07 and to His service. 00:02:06.08\00:02:07.13 So if we come early in the day or at 5 o' clock, 00:02:07.14\00:02:10.11 we still receive this gift that comes from God. 00:02:10.12\00:02:12.28 Now after the parable Jesus presses towards Jerusalem. 00:02:12.29\00:02:16.59 It says in verse 17, He took the disciples aside. 00:02:16.60\00:02:20.42 Now in the past, 00:02:20.43\00:02:21.42 He had spoken about His death in a general way. 00:02:21.43\00:02:24.48 He gets more specific now. 00:02:24.49\00:02:26.13 He tells very, very clearly verse 18 00:02:26.14\00:02:28.96 "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, 00:02:28.97\00:02:30.65 and the Son of Man will be delivered up 00:02:30.66\00:02:32.25 to the Chief Priests and to the Scribes. 00:02:32.26\00:02:34.28 They will condemn him to death and deliver him 00:02:34.29\00:02:36.84 to the Gentiles to be mocked, and scourged, and crucified 00:02:36.85\00:02:39.85 and he will rise on the third day." 00:02:39.86\00:02:42.08 It's very clear. 00:02:42.09\00:02:43.43 It said that the Gentiles will mock and scourge him. 00:02:43.44\00:02:46.33 Jesus actually told them everything in detail 00:02:46.34\00:02:49.64 what--what will happen to him. 00:02:49.65\00:02:51.34 There was no any, any doubt. 00:02:51.35\00:02:52.88 But the next story tells us they didn't quite get it. 00:02:52.89\00:02:55.10 But they didn't get it. 00:02:55.11\00:02:56.53 Not only that, we know when we read 00:02:56.54\00:02:59.02 the end of the Gospels, how much they were 00:02:59.03\00:03:01.14 disappointed when Jesus was crucified. 00:03:01.15\00:03:03.12 They did not get anything. 00:03:03.13\00:03:05.04 And actually this is a great way for me personally. 00:03:05.05\00:03:08.00 And to all of us, ask so many times 00:03:08.01\00:03:11.19 we can be obsessed with some of our ideas, 00:03:11.20\00:03:14.33 what we have been believed for years, 00:03:14.34\00:03:16.48 what we have known for years. 00:03:16.49\00:03:17.79 When the message of the Bible comes to us, 00:03:17.80\00:03:21.01 when Jesus Christ knocks on the door of our hearts, 00:03:21.02\00:03:24.11 we don't get it. 00:03:24.12\00:03:25.48 Because it's very, very much important 00:03:25.49\00:03:28.10 to surrender ourselves to God 00:03:28.11\00:03:30.22 and ask God to emptiness of anything that prevent us 00:03:30.23\00:03:35.95 to accept Him as our personal savior. 00:03:35.96\00:03:37.98 But, Ranko, the story of the mother of the sons of Zebedee, 00:03:37.99\00:03:43.59 James and John coming, 00:03:43.60\00:03:45.52 and kind of manipulating in the background, 00:03:45.53\00:03:47.83 she's got a family connection. 00:03:47.84\00:03:50.14 She can work it and you know in the East, 00:03:50.15\00:03:52.25 you don't say no to mother. 00:03:52.26\00:03:54.30 So she calms and she wants to give the special place. 00:03:54.31\00:03:56.75 They really don't understand where Jesus is heading. 00:03:56.76\00:04:00.59 Yeah, actually Jesus is making very clear. 00:04:00.60\00:04:04.15 We are going to Jerusalem. 00:04:04.16\00:04:07.62 The Gentiles will kill Me there. 00:04:07.63\00:04:10.95 They will scourge Me. They will kill Me. 00:04:10.96\00:04:12.60 Actually, He really provides in details 00:04:12.61\00:04:15.43 what will happen to Him in Jerusalem. 00:04:15.44\00:04:17.90 But the disciples did not get it. 00:04:17.91\00:04:20.28 He's talking about cross. 00:04:20.29\00:04:21.68 They are remembering what He said about thrones 00:04:21.69\00:04:24.28 and they wanna make sure they get the right thone. 00:04:24.29\00:04:26.94 How does He respond to them? 00:04:26.95\00:04:28.12 So just few chapters earlier, 00:04:28.13\00:04:30.47 they came to Jesus asking Him. 00:04:30.48\00:04:32.65 When He establishes His kingdom, 00:04:32.66\00:04:34.04 they would like to be the prime ministers 00:04:34.05\00:04:35.83 one on the right, another one on the left. 00:04:35.84\00:04:37.93 Evidently, they were unsuccessful. 00:04:37.94\00:04:39.96 What are they now doing? 00:04:39.97\00:04:41.19 They're sending their own mother to persuade 00:04:41.20\00:04:43.59 Jesus to give them permanent place in His kingdom. 00:04:43.60\00:04:47.78 Well, now the other disciples are upset probably in part 00:04:47.79\00:04:50.98 because they didn't think of this idea, 00:04:50.99\00:04:52.61 this strategy, you know? 00:04:52.62\00:04:54.37 And Jesus speaks about 00:04:54.38\00:04:55.70 a purpose of this mission in verse 28, 00:04:55.71\00:04:58.04 Ranko, it's so important. Let's read that. 00:04:58.05\00:05:00.88 Actually from 26 would be nice. All right. 00:05:00.89\00:05:03.71 It shall not be so among you 00:05:03.72\00:05:05.56 but whoever would be great among 00:05:05.57\00:05:06.96 you must be your servant 00:05:06.97\00:05:08.44 and whoever would be first among you, 00:05:08.45\00:05:09.99 must be your slave even as the son of man 00:05:10.00\00:05:13.01 came not be served but to serve 00:05:13.02\00:05:15.50 and to give His life as a ransom for many. 00:05:15.51\00:05:18.79 What a beautiful statement. Powerful, powerful. 00:05:18.80\00:05:21.32 What Jesus made the statement 00:05:21.33\00:05:22.61 at His kingdom is not about the prestige, 00:05:22.62\00:05:25.82 is not about getting power to rule over the people. 00:05:25.83\00:05:29.62 If you really want to have 00:05:29.63\00:05:31.56 a permanent place in the kingdom, 00:05:31.57\00:05:34.08 it means you want to be servant, 00:05:34.09\00:05:36.62 to serve to the needs of people, 00:05:36.63\00:05:39.02 to bring the salvation, 00:05:39.03\00:05:40.56 to bring Jesus Christ in the lives. 00:05:40.57\00:05:42.63 Actually, if you want to be the follower of Jesus, 00:05:42.64\00:05:46.65 you have to follow in the footsteps of the master, 00:05:46.66\00:05:49.33 because Jesus came not with the power, 00:05:49.34\00:05:52.05 He came to be the servant 00:05:52.06\00:05:53.68 and to save people from their sins 00:05:53.69\00:05:56.10 as we read at the beginning of the chapter 00:05:56.11\00:05:57.85 and Jesus repeats it in verse 28. 00:05:57.86\00:06:01.49 And His mission to be a ransom 00:06:01.50\00:06:03.12 for many is what takes us in Chapter 21 00:06:03.13\00:06:06.20 to the entry into Jerusalem. 00:06:06.21\00:06:08.62 May I read some of that, 00:06:08.63\00:06:09.87 and when they drew near to Jerusalem, 00:06:09.88\00:06:11.70 and came to Bethany, to the Mount of Olives, 00:06:11.71\00:06:13.96 then Jesus sent His disciples, 00:06:13.97\00:06:15.45 two off them saying to them 00:06:15.46\00:06:16.74 go into the village opposite you, 00:06:16.75\00:06:18.27 and immediately you will find 00:06:18.28\00:06:19.33 a donkey tied in a colt with her, untie them, 00:06:19.34\00:06:22.12 and bring them to me. 00:06:22.13\00:06:23.33 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 00:06:23.34\00:06:25.76 The Lord has needed them, 00:06:25.77\00:06:27.47 and he will send them immediately. 00:06:27.48\00:06:29.48 This took place to fulfill 00:06:29.49\00:06:30.87 what was spoken by the prophet saying 00:06:30.88\00:06:32.86 tell the daughter of Zion, 00:06:32.87\00:06:34.09 'Behold, your king is coming humble, 00:06:34.10\00:06:36.08 and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, 00:06:36.09\00:06:38.43 the foal of a donkey. 00:06:38.44\00:06:39.98 The disciples went, 00:06:39.99\00:06:40.98 and did as Jesus had directed them. 00:06:40.99\00:06:42.99 They brought the donkey, 00:06:43.00\00:06:44.00 and the colt, and put their garments on them, 00:06:44.01\00:06:46.05 and He sat there on most of the crowds, 00:06:46.06\00:06:48.02 spread their garments on the road 00:06:48.03\00:06:49.68 and others cut branches from the trees 00:06:49.69\00:06:51.92 and spread them on the road and the crowds 00:06:51.93\00:06:54.07 that went before Him and followed Him shouted 00:06:54.08\00:06:56.34 "Hosanna!" to the son of David. 00:06:56.35\00:06:59.12 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:06:59.13\00:07:01.82 Hosanna in the highest.' 00:07:01.83\00:07:04.19 And when He entered Jerusalem, 00:07:04.20\00:07:05.49 all of the city was stirred saying who is this? 00:07:05.50\00:07:09.71 And the crowd said, 00:07:09.72\00:07:11.00 "This is the Prophet Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee. 00:07:11.01\00:07:15.10 Now, Ranko, one question I have is, 00:07:15.11\00:07:17.21 He is going to Jerusalem. 00:07:17.22\00:07:18.61 He knows the cross is ahead Him, 00:07:18.62\00:07:20.48 but He asks about these animals, why? 00:07:20.49\00:07:23.45 Number one is again, again, 00:07:25.57\00:07:28.81 we have the same truth in Gospel of Matthew. 00:07:28.82\00:07:31.60 It's verse 4. 00:07:31.61\00:07:33.75 This took place in order 00:07:33.76\00:07:35.56 that the prophecy can be fulfilled. 00:07:35.57\00:07:38.80 Now in many of the pagan nations, 00:07:38.81\00:07:41.20 a king would come riding on a warhorse, 00:07:41.21\00:07:43.75 very much a warrior and so forth. 00:07:43.76\00:07:45.34 Have you ever seen any picture of Rome-- 00:07:45.35\00:07:47.13 Roman general or any prominent 00:07:47.14\00:07:50.17 ancient ruler riding on a donkey? 00:07:50.18\00:07:53.66 No, I think, no. 00:07:53.67\00:07:54.69 A donkey is the beast of burden. 00:07:54.70\00:07:56.41 It's the common laborer's animal. 00:07:56.42\00:07:58.54 Yeah. It's the animal of poor people. 00:07:58.55\00:08:00.80 Yes, living there in the mountain areas 00:08:00.81\00:08:03.27 and you can use the donkey. 00:08:03.28\00:08:04.69 But it's not reserved for the ruler. 00:08:04.70\00:08:07.87 So Jesus is still arriving. 00:08:07.88\00:08:09.79 He is as a king entering city, city of Jerusalem. 00:08:09.80\00:08:14.52 But according to the prophecy, 00:08:14.53\00:08:16.87 He came--actually this is the elaboration 00:08:16.88\00:08:18.92 what we arrived. 00:08:18.93\00:08:19.92 Jesus came not to be served, but to serve, 00:08:19.93\00:08:24.44 He is coming as a servant. 00:08:24.45\00:08:26.71 in order to fulfill that prophecy. 00:08:26.72\00:08:28.55 And He's wanting to change 00:08:28.56\00:08:29.70 their understanding of what the messiah was, 00:08:29.71\00:08:31.96 because other sections of the prophets, 00:08:31.97\00:08:33.90 the prophecy of Zachariah 00:08:33.91\00:08:35.73 described a conquering king and so forth, 00:08:35.74\00:08:38.18 but this section it is chosen here, 00:08:38.19\00:08:40.84 it speaks to that servant role. 00:08:40.85\00:08:42.69 Let's put it in this way. 00:08:42.70\00:08:44.65 The prophecy was telling us 00:08:44.66\00:08:46.12 the messiah would come into His own city, city Jerusalem. 00:08:46.13\00:08:51.86 He would sit on the throne of David. 00:08:51.87\00:08:54.98 So according to the Gospel of Matthew, 00:08:54.99\00:08:57.53 when people saw Jesus entering Jerusalem, 00:08:57.54\00:09:00.57 they recognized the fulfillment of the prophecy. 00:09:00.58\00:09:03.80 The Messiah is coming into-- He is entering His city. 00:09:03.81\00:09:10.55 However, so they had the fulfillment of the prophecy. 00:09:10.56\00:09:15.00 However, the lesson that Jesus told them, 00:09:15.01\00:09:17.27 He did not come to establish the earthly kingdom. 00:09:17.28\00:09:20.09 He did not come like, like a powerful ruler on the horse. 00:09:20.10\00:09:24.42 His mission was not in His power and authority. 00:09:24.43\00:09:27.68 His mission was in servanthood. 00:09:27.69\00:09:30.13 He came to save people from their sins. 00:09:30.17\00:09:32.32 So its freedom from sin rather than 00:09:32.33\00:09:34.14 freedom from Rome that is His primary focus. 00:09:34.15\00:09:37.61 They recognized this is a great event. 00:09:37.62\00:09:40.61 Hosanna to the son of David, 00:09:40.62\00:09:42.27 blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:09:42.28\00:09:44.42 Hosanna to the highest. 00:09:44.43\00:09:45.90 What attributes they are giving. 00:09:45.91\00:09:47.87 Now they still don't quite understand 00:09:47.88\00:09:49.32 because all they say is that He is a Prophet. 00:09:49.33\00:09:50.91 Actually you could expect 00:09:50.92\00:09:51.95 that Jesus would-- would be real. 00:09:51.96\00:09:54.19 You see finally they recognize Him 00:09:54.20\00:09:56.16 as the promised king. 00:09:56.17\00:09:57.59 However, when we go to other Synoptic Gospels, 00:09:57.60\00:09:59.76 I think its Luke or Mark. 00:09:59.77\00:10:00.99 I forget it. They said, 00:10:01.00\00:10:03.03 "At that shouting when Jesus saw the city, 00:10:03.04\00:10:05.95 He started weeping." 00:10:05.96\00:10:08.95 Because He knew that people 00:10:08.96\00:10:11.32 were shouting to Him for wrong reason. 00:10:11.33\00:10:13.48 They were shouting Hosanna. 00:10:13.49\00:10:15.11 Just few days later, they are shouting crucify Him 00:10:15.12\00:10:18.26 and crucify because their hopes 00:10:18.27\00:10:20.44 were not fulfilled into that earthly kingdom. 00:10:20.45\00:10:22.45 That's right. Let's remember 00:10:22.46\00:10:23.92 that this is the first of the Passion Week 00:10:23.93\00:10:25.99 and very soon the crowd will change 00:10:26.00\00:10:28.35 how fickle the crowd is. 00:10:28.36\00:10:29.87 But, you know, you said, 00:10:29.88\00:10:31.28 we might expect Jesus to be happy 00:10:31.29\00:10:33.05 and certainly if you think about the disciples, 00:10:33.06\00:10:35.00 they must have enjoyed this. 00:10:35.01\00:10:36.59 Probably, Judas the most. 00:10:36.60\00:10:38.59 Now at last, we've come. 00:10:38.60\00:10:40.09 Everything looks good, 00:10:40.10\00:10:41.40 but then He does this strange thing 00:10:41.41\00:10:43.14 of going into the temple and cleansing the temple. 00:10:43.15\00:10:46.95 Ranko, you would've thought the disciples would say, 00:10:46.96\00:10:49.59 okay, now look, you've come to Jerusalem. 00:10:49.60\00:10:51.71 The crowds are accepting you. 00:10:51.72\00:10:53.16 Work with the Pharisees a little bit. 00:10:53.17\00:10:55.60 You know, compromise a bit with Sadducees Jesus. 00:10:55.61\00:10:58.40 This is the time for you to set up your kingdom. 00:10:58.41\00:11:00.76 Actually, we go and see 00:11:00.77\00:11:04.87 the picture of Ancient temple in Jerusalem 00:11:04.88\00:11:07.57 is we know that the temple had several courts. 00:11:07.58\00:11:12.99 The first court was known as the court of the Gentiles. 00:11:13.00\00:11:18.06 Into that section of the temple, 00:11:18.07\00:11:21.32 all Gentiles could come. 00:11:21.33\00:11:22.73 That's all where they could come. 00:11:22.74\00:11:24.05 The next one was the court of the Jews-- 00:11:24.06\00:11:27.68 the court of women were women could come, 00:11:27.69\00:11:30.02 the next one the court of Jews, Israelites 00:11:30.03\00:11:33.78 and then after the court of the priest. 00:11:33.79\00:11:36.30 The Gentiles could come only into the first section. 00:11:36.31\00:11:40.35 At the door of the next section, 00:11:40.36\00:11:41.96 there was an inscription that any Gentile 00:11:41.97\00:11:44.51 who would go through this door, 00:11:44.52\00:11:46.09 will be responsible for his own death. 00:11:46.10\00:11:49.68 That temple that God established 00:11:49.69\00:11:51.25 to be the house of prayer to all nations. 00:11:51.26\00:11:55.53 Actually, the greedy Sadducees, 00:11:55.54\00:11:57.53 they made it to the place 00:11:57.54\00:11:59.26 to steal money, money from people. 00:11:59.27\00:12:02.86 When Jesus came, 00:12:02.87\00:12:04.03 He came to save His people from their sins. 00:12:04.04\00:12:06.20 He wanted to save all people and what He could see 00:12:06.21\00:12:09.93 there were greedy Sadducees. 00:12:09.94\00:12:12.99 There was nothing for the Gentiles 00:12:13.00\00:12:15.08 that they could learn about the God of Israel, 00:12:15.09\00:12:17.73 about those promises of salvation 00:12:17.74\00:12:19.71 that is actually offered to them. 00:12:19.72\00:12:22.18 This was the only new occasion that made Jesus angry 00:12:22.19\00:12:25.09 and provoked the action that He did. 00:12:25.10\00:12:26.96 We don't have time to explore it 00:12:26.97\00:12:28.25 but the bearing fig tree acted 00:12:28.26\00:12:30.09 out parable is exactly 00:12:30.10\00:12:31.81 what the temple would become. 00:12:31.82\00:12:33.88 Jesus comes to cleanse the temple. 00:12:33.89\00:12:35.54 Ranko, it's the second time. 00:12:35.55\00:12:36.72 What does that tell us about 00:12:36.73\00:12:37.75 our lives just for a little devotional thought, 00:12:37.76\00:12:40.51 Jesus comes to cleanse the temple. 00:12:40.52\00:12:42.49 Yes, Jesus wants to cleanse us as well. 00:12:42.50\00:12:45.63 He does not look always at our mistakes, 00:12:45.64\00:12:48.54 our shortcomings because He is Savior, 00:12:48.55\00:12:50.75 He wants to save us. 00:12:50.76\00:12:52.58
