We want to, to serve you faithfully. 00:01:53.76\00:01:57.71 We want to learn more of you 00:01:57.72\00:01:59.08 and as we're studying your scriptures, 00:01:59.09\00:02:01.16 may we hear your voice. 00:02:01.17\00:02:02.76 May we be drawn to you as our Lord and Savior. 00:02:02.77\00:02:05.48 As you move to the cross in these chapters, 00:02:05.49\00:02:08.87 may we be moved to follow you there. 00:02:08.88\00:02:10.99 In Jesus name, we pray. 00:02:11.00\00:02:12.71 Amen. 00:02:12.72\00:02:15.26 We've been following Jesus journey 00:02:15.27\00:02:16.98 through Galilee now as He's heading 00:02:16.99\00:02:19.36 towards Jerusalem and He has just dealt 00:02:19.37\00:02:22.60 with the story of the rich young ruler 00:02:22.61\00:02:25.02 who came and asked what must I do to be saved 00:02:25.03\00:02:28.14 and the disciples were a little concerned 00:02:28.15\00:02:30.69 about this issue and they are wondering 00:02:30.70\00:02:33.92 will there be a reward? 00:02:33.93\00:02:35.05 Will there be a benefit for following Jesus 00:02:35.06\00:02:38.16 and He tells them a parable. 00:02:38.17\00:02:40.43 Actually it's really the introduction to chapter 20. 00:02:40.44\00:02:44.01 One more time, let me remind, 00:02:44.02\00:02:45.65 the viewer says that when we started 00:02:45.66\00:02:47.80 the Bible, lets be careful 00:02:47.81\00:02:49.81 not just to stay within one chapter 00:02:49.82\00:02:52.08 because Matthew never divided 00:02:52.09\00:02:53.76 His gospel in to chapters. 00:02:53.77\00:02:55.61 Because chapter 20 is connected 00:02:55.62\00:02:59.52 with the previous text and the text that follows 00:02:59.53\00:03:03.61 chapter 20 builds on that so, so its very, very important 00:03:03.62\00:03:08.39 to keep that, that context of the text 00:03:08.40\00:03:12.20 in order to get the full message. 00:03:12.21\00:03:13.68 So, Glenn, I would really like to ask you 00:03:13.69\00:03:15.71 if you can read verses 27 to 30. 00:03:15.72\00:03:18.48 All right. Mathew Chapter 18 and we'll start with-- 00:03:18.49\00:03:21.34 No, 19-- Excuse me, 19, yes. 00:03:21.35\00:03:23.18 Chapter 19 verse 27 and following. 00:03:23.19\00:03:26.66 "Then Peter said in reply, 00:03:26.67\00:03:28.73 'Lord we have left everything and followed you. 00:03:28.74\00:03:30.62 What then shall we receive?' 00:03:30.63\00:03:32.55 Jesus said to them, truly I say to you 00:03:32.56\00:03:34.99 in the new world, when the son of man 00:03:35.00\00:03:36.91 shall sit on his glorious throne, 00:03:36.92\00:03:39.09 you who have followed me will also sit on 12 thrones, 00:03:39.10\00:03:43.08 judging the 12 tribes of Israel 00:03:43.09\00:03:45.36 and everyone who has left houses 00:03:45.37\00:03:47.12 or brothers or sisters or mother or father 00:03:47.13\00:03:49.19 or children or lands for my sake 00:03:49.20\00:03:52.04 will receive a 100 fold 00:03:52.05\00:03:53.60 and inherit eternal life, 00:03:53.61\00:03:55.47 but many that are first, 00:03:55.48\00:03:57.28 will be last and the last will be first. 00:03:57.29\00:04:00.07 So, Glenn, what is now the context? 00:04:00.08\00:04:02.20 You see the rich young man became sad-- 00:04:02.21\00:04:07.99 And turned away. 00:04:08.00\00:04:09.08 And turned away and Peter looks at him 00:04:09.09\00:04:12.77 and they say, "Wow, who can be saved 00:04:12.78\00:04:17.80 and Jesus answers in verse 26, 00:04:17.81\00:04:21.01 "With people this is impossible, 00:04:21.02\00:04:23.78 but with God all things are possible." 00:04:23.79\00:04:26.12 So Peter now became encouraged 00:04:26.13\00:04:28.22 and he said yeah, the Lord. 00:04:28.23\00:04:29.66 You see this young men did not want 00:04:29.67\00:04:31.91 to leave his procession in order to follow you 00:04:31.92\00:04:36.02 but we have left everything and Jesus was-- 00:04:36.03\00:04:39.95 And that was an honest statement. 00:04:39.96\00:04:41.30 An honest statement but Jesus says, 00:04:42.74\00:04:44.87 yes, whoever leaves everything in this world 00:04:44.88\00:04:48.83 for the sake of the kingdom 00:04:48.84\00:04:50.95 in the kingdom of God, he will receive much, 00:04:50.96\00:04:55.18 much more than he had to sacrifice 00:04:55.19\00:04:57.80 and to leave in this life. 00:04:57.81\00:04:59.51 And I am sure many of us have asked 00:04:59.52\00:05:01.11 that same question. 00:05:01.12\00:05:02.25 Jesus I've paid a price for following you. 00:05:02.26\00:05:06.26 What's the benefit? Will it be worth it 00:05:06.27\00:05:09.01 to follow Jesus that's their question, isn't it? 00:05:09.02\00:05:11.87 And who knows, maybe, this rich ruler, 00:05:11.88\00:05:17.28 young ruler want they maybe he repented, 00:05:17.29\00:05:20.98 came back to Christ who knows that-- 00:05:20.99\00:05:22.18 We don't know, yes. 00:05:22.19\00:05:23.26 But Jesus said many who were now first, 00:05:23.27\00:05:26.57 will be the last, 00:05:26.58\00:05:29.29 okay? And the last first. 00:05:29.30\00:05:30.85 The rich young ruler he was first, 00:05:30.86\00:05:34.26 I mean, he obeyed all the commandments. 00:05:34.27\00:05:36.07 He was the first, but he would be the last. 00:05:36.08\00:05:37.98 But those who were last, they were not taken 00:05:37.99\00:05:40.26 seriously by the Pharisees like the disciples. 00:05:40.27\00:05:42.76 But they will be the first 00:05:42.77\00:05:43.97 and now Jesus in order to illustrate it, 00:05:43.98\00:05:46.83 now he says the following parable. 00:05:46.84\00:05:48.73 Glenn, would be good that we read this parable, okay? 00:05:48.74\00:05:51.18 All right. Mathew chapter 20 verse 1. 00:05:51.19\00:05:55.01 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder 00:05:55.02\00:05:57.20 who went out early in the morning 00:05:57.21\00:05:58.51 to hire laborers for his vineyard." 00:05:58.52\00:06:00.45 And we should say this is a very common practice. 00:06:00.46\00:06:03.17 Yeah. You'd go out looking for workers for-- 00:06:03.18\00:06:04.94 To the market place there. 00:06:04.95\00:06:06.26 Yes, still in many parts of the world. 00:06:06.27\00:06:08.73 I was in Cairo last year 00:06:08.74\00:06:10.59 and you see men waiting for work that day. 00:06:10.60\00:06:13.45 They're sitting on the sidewalk 00:06:13.46\00:06:14.94 waiting for someone to hire them. 00:06:14.95\00:06:16.28 Especially we go to near east, it's still common. 00:06:16.29\00:06:18.34 You go to the market there, people even begging you, 00:06:18.35\00:06:20.37 asking you for a job that's, that's very normal. 00:06:20.38\00:06:22.85 And after agreeing with the laborers 00:06:22.86\00:06:24.55 for a denarius for a day, 00:06:24.56\00:06:26.34 he sent them into his vineyard. 00:06:26.35\00:06:28.19 And going out about the third hour, 00:06:28.20\00:06:29.92 he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 00:06:29.93\00:06:32.37 and to them he said, 00:06:32.38\00:06:33.73 'You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right, 00:06:33.74\00:06:35.83 I will give you.' So they went. 00:06:35.84\00:06:38.21 Going out again about the sixth hour 00:06:38.22\00:06:40.87 and the ninth hour, he did the same. 00:06:40.88\00:06:43.55 And about the eleventh hour, 00:06:43.56\00:06:45.17 he went out and found others standing, 00:06:45.18\00:06:46.82 and he said to them, 00:06:46.83\00:06:47.97 'Why do you stand here idle all day?' 00:06:47.98\00:06:49.86 They said to him, 'Because no one has hired us.' 00:06:49.87\00:06:52.12 He said to them, 'Go into my vineyard also.' 00:06:52.13\00:06:56.02 And when the evening came, 00:06:56.03\00:06:57.10 the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, 00:06:57.11\00:06:59.09 'Call the laborers and pay them their wages, 00:06:59.10\00:07:01.61 beginning with the last, up to the first.' 00:07:01.62\00:07:04.73 Now that should--we should be alert to that point. 00:07:04.74\00:07:07.52 There's some reason for the last to the first. 00:07:07.53\00:07:10.24 "And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, 00:07:10.25\00:07:14.38 each one of them received the denarius. 00:07:14.39\00:07:17.56 Now when the first came, 00:07:17.57\00:07:18.56 they thought they would receive more, 00:07:18.57\00:07:20.87 but each of them also received a denarius. 00:07:20.88\00:07:23.88 And on receiving it, 00:07:23.89\00:07:24.98 they grumbled at the householder, saying, 00:07:24.99\00:07:27.26 'These last worked only one hour, 00:07:27.27\00:07:29.44 and you have made them equal to us 00:07:29.45\00:07:31.13 who have borne the burden of the day 00:07:31.14\00:07:32.70 and the scorching heat.' He replied to them, 00:07:32.71\00:07:35.88 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong, 00:07:35.89\00:07:38.52 did I not agree with you for a denarius? 00:07:38.53\00:07:41.32 Take what belongs to you, and go, 00:07:41.33\00:07:43.72 I choose to give to this last as I give to you. 00:07:43.73\00:07:48.34 Am I not allowed to do 00:07:48.35\00:07:50.28 what I choose with what belongs to me? 00:07:50.29\00:07:52.47 Or do you begrudge my generosity?' 00:07:52.48\00:07:54.87 So the last will be first, and the first will be last." 00:07:54.88\00:07:58.38 We come right back to that book end statement. 00:07:58.39\00:08:00.48 So verse 16 is actually a repetition of verse 30 00:08:00.49\00:08:06.56 of the previous chapter 00:08:06.57\00:08:07.71 so telling us that the parable of the Jesus said 00:08:07.72\00:08:12.34 he has stated it's related to what is before. 00:08:12.35\00:08:15.72 So let's put it in the context. 00:08:15.73\00:08:18.85 Who are those who were the first starting working, 00:08:18.86\00:08:22.87 who are those who are the last? I don't know. 00:08:22.88\00:08:26.01 Maybe this young ruler 00:08:26.02\00:08:27.18 who was so perfect in keeping the law 00:08:27.19\00:08:29.56 maybe he could be that who really worked hard. 00:08:29.57\00:08:32.95 He work very, very much. 00:08:32.96\00:08:35.38 What about Peter and the apostles? Could they be? 00:08:35.39\00:08:38.87 Peter said you see we have left everything. 00:08:38.88\00:08:41.27 They could counter themselves. 00:08:41.28\00:08:43.02 What about some of the Pharisees 00:08:43.03\00:08:44.41 who were the first to obey every rule. Yes. 00:08:44.42\00:08:47.23 But the point that Jesus made it here, 00:08:47.24\00:08:49.65 He says that a man went there 00:08:49.66\00:08:51.15 to the marketplace looking for laborers. 00:08:51.16\00:08:54.02 When did he go there? We don't know. 00:08:54.03\00:08:56.82 But the fact that he said that he went 00:08:56.83\00:08:59.35 for a second time after-- 00:08:59.36\00:09:02.65 He was early the first time he was. 00:09:02.66\00:09:04.06 Yeah. He said in third hour, 00:09:04.07\00:09:06.01 we have to understand what third hour is 00:09:06.02\00:09:07.66 and with the Jewish people, 00:09:07.67\00:09:09.54 the day started at 6:00 in the morning so 7:00 a.m. 00:09:09.55\00:09:14.53 would be the first hour, 8:00 a.m. 00:09:14.54\00:09:17.67 would be the second, okay? 00:09:17.68\00:09:20.32 And the third hour would be 9:00 a.m. 00:09:20.33\00:09:23.25 So he went at 9:00 in the morning. 00:09:23.28\00:09:25.86 Then after that, he went when? 00:09:25.87\00:09:27.94 At the sixth hour which will be noon. 00:09:27.95\00:09:31.28 Then he went at the ninth hour, which will be 3:00 p.m. 00:09:31.29\00:09:35.69 and the 11 hour would be 5:00 p.m. 00:09:35.70\00:09:39.11 Almost quitting time. They worked only for one hour. 00:09:39.12\00:09:44.88 Ranko, I have, I have worked in this kind of situation 00:09:44.89\00:09:47.70 where you hope someone hires you 00:09:47.74\00:09:49.37 and you know you're gonna get paid by the hour. 00:09:49.38\00:09:51.52 You're not gonna get the same wages. Sure. 00:09:51.53\00:09:54.17 So the question is he said what is right 00:09:54.18\00:09:57.24 I will give it to you. 00:09:57.25\00:09:58.25 What was right to pay to them? 00:09:58.26\00:10:00.36 We know the time of Jesus. 00:10:00.37\00:10:02.23 If you work one day, 00:10:02.24\00:10:03.77 there was something very right to be paid 00:10:03.78\00:10:06.53 and what was that one denarius, 00:10:06.54\00:10:08.62 which was daily wage. 00:10:08.63\00:10:10.07 Very generous, very established standard 00:10:10.08\00:10:13.85 and norm to pay person for daily work 00:10:13.86\00:10:18.73 so there was no issue with regard to that. 00:10:18.74\00:10:21.58 But we have a great surprise here in the story. 00:10:21.59\00:10:25.34 What's going on, Glenn? It's interesting. 00:10:25.35\00:10:27.29 At the beginning, He arranges the price. 00:10:27.30\00:10:29.32 Later, he says I'll pay you what's right. That's right. 00:10:29.35\00:10:31.63 So they have to trust that he's gonna be fair with them. 00:10:31.64\00:10:34.59 They know they don't expect to get a full wage. 00:10:34.60\00:10:36.82 But there is no fairness here. 00:10:36.83\00:10:38.92 Well, the fact that he arranges 00:10:38.93\00:10:44.08 how they're gonna get paid is very intentional, isn't it? 00:10:44.09\00:10:46.88 Yeah. If he had just paid 00:10:46.89\00:10:48.60 the first ones first and they left, 00:10:48.61\00:10:50.40 they would've gotten the denarius 00:10:50.41\00:10:51.70 that they had agreed to. 00:10:51.71\00:10:53.01 The contract was fulfilled. 00:10:53.02\00:10:54.53 They would've gone home happy. 00:10:54.54\00:10:56.46 But now, when they are at the end of the line, 00:10:56.47\00:10:58.27 and they see those who worked an hour, 00:10:58.28\00:10:59.60 are getting what they expected, 00:10:59.61\00:11:01.29 they know they're gonna get more. 00:11:01.30\00:11:02.50 So those who worked for only one hour, 00:11:02.51\00:11:05.65 they got the denarius. A day's wage. 00:11:05.66\00:11:08.08 So if he, those who came the first one, 00:11:08.09\00:11:10.53 they expected, boy, if they got denarius, 00:11:10.54\00:11:14.58 boy, at least 12 times more. 00:11:14.59\00:11:16.57 At least, double in the day 00:11:16.58\00:11:18.87 and they were surprised actually 00:11:18.88\00:11:20.76 when they received the same amount 00:11:20.77\00:11:23.86 as those who came in the last moment. 00:11:23.87\00:11:27.04 May I say they weren't just surprised they were offended? 00:11:27.05\00:11:29.79 Yeah. They were upset and the way they speak 00:11:29.80\00:11:33.18 to the master is quite interesting, the householder. 00:11:33.19\00:11:36.19 You know, these last worked 00:11:36.20\00:11:38.01 only one hour you made them 00:11:38.02\00:11:39.17 equal to us who have what? 00:11:39.18\00:11:41.10 Who have borne the burden of the day 00:11:41.11\00:11:42.86 and the scorching heat. 00:11:42.87\00:11:45.54 They seem to misunderstand the intentions of the master. 00:11:45.55\00:11:50.45 Why is He doing this, Ranko? What's His point? 00:11:50.46\00:11:53.02 Why is He overly generous? 00:11:53.03\00:11:55.94 What is the issue here really? 00:11:55.95\00:11:57.75 Its verse 12. 00:11:57.76\00:11:58.77 Verse 11-12. 00:12:01.81\00:12:02.94 When they received one denarius, were they deserved? 00:12:02.95\00:12:08.30 The master did not cheat on them. No. 00:12:08.31\00:12:12.66 They really got what is-- but they said verse 12. 00:12:12.67\00:12:16.98 'These last men have worked only one hour, 00:12:16.99\00:12:20.69 and you made them equal to us 00:12:20.70\00:12:23.28 who have borne the burden 00:12:23.29\00:12:25.63 and the scorching heat of the day.' 00:12:25.64\00:12:29.52 We worked, since we worked, 00:12:29.53\00:12:32.47 we have to be rewarded for what we work. 00:12:32.48\00:12:36.38 What is the answer that the person gives? 00:12:36.39\00:12:40.09 He said friend, I am not doing you wrong, 00:12:40.10\00:12:43.82 did you not agree with me for a denarius? 00:12:43.83\00:12:47.29 Take what is yours, and go, 00:12:47.30\00:12:49.54 But I wish to give to these last men, the same as you. 00:12:49.55\00:12:52.69 It is not lawful of me to do what I wish what is my own. 00:12:52.70\00:12:56.91 Now the last statement is, 00:12:56.92\00:12:58.49 Or is your eye envious because I am generous? 00:12:58.50\00:13:04.52 We have to honestly say 00:13:04.53\00:13:06.52 we would've reacted as these labors did. 00:13:06.53\00:13:09.41 Come on, you know-- That's our human nature. 00:13:09.42\00:13:13.23 If I do eight times, nine times 00:13:13.24\00:13:16.86 what someone else does and they get the same pay, 00:13:16.87\00:13:19.94 we would not consider that justice. 00:13:19.95\00:13:21.99 This is beyond justice, isn't it? 00:13:22.00\00:13:23.93 Where is it telling us about the heart of God? 00:13:23.96\00:13:26.56 Glenn, we are dealing here with the gospel. 00:13:26.57\00:13:30.00 Gospel is not about how much I worked. 00:13:30.01\00:13:34.95 Is not about how much I deserved. 00:13:34.96\00:13:37.76 Let's keep something in mind. 00:13:37.77\00:13:40.31 Those people, even those who worked all day, 00:13:40.32\00:13:42.80 they did not get what they deserved. 00:13:42.81\00:13:45.80 The fact that they got a job 00:13:45.81\00:13:48.09 was the grace and the mercy of this person is. 00:13:48.10\00:13:52.93 You see the gospel message and salvation is not based on 00:13:52.94\00:13:56.80 what we worked, what we deserve. 00:13:56.81\00:14:00.96 It's everything because of the grace of God. 00:14:00.97\00:14:03.93 Glenn, do we have here a reminder of the text 00:14:03.94\00:14:07.07 that comes from Paul, we are saved by grace? Yes. 00:14:07.08\00:14:11.64 It's not according to the works that we can boast, everything 00:14:11.65\00:14:15.75 is because of the grace of God 00:14:15.76\00:14:17.18 more about that after the break. 00:14:17.19\00:14:18.99 It's not a wage. It's a gift of the generous God. 00:14:19.00\00:14:22.59 We're gonna come back to explore 00:14:22.60\00:14:23.86 a little bit more of Mathew Chapter 20. 00:14:23.87\00:14:26.26 Don't miss it. We'll be right back after our break. 00:14:26.27\00:14:28.59
