Hi, and welcome to "The Book of the Book" series 00:00:21.55\00:00:24.29 on "The Gospel of Matthew." 00:00:24.30\00:00:25.63 We're here studying scripture with Ranko Stefanovic, 00:00:25.64\00:00:29.91 New Testament professor 00:00:29.92\00:00:30.91 at Andrew's University Theological Seminary. 00:00:30.92\00:00:33.26 Ranko, it's a joy to study God's word together, isn't it? 00:00:33.27\00:00:35.72 Yes, Glenn, and I'm so glad that we can see love, 00:00:35.73\00:00:40.41 friendship here during this series 00:00:40.42\00:00:42.68 that is so much important. 00:00:42.69\00:00:44.69 We--you are teaching there at Andrew's University 00:00:44.70\00:00:47.44 in the Department of Religion. 00:00:47.45\00:00:49.00 We were in that department for number of years, 00:00:49.01\00:00:51.56 I think nine or ten years. 00:00:51.57\00:00:54.20 And I know how great impact you made on my own children 00:00:54.21\00:00:58.65 while teaching there at Andrew's Academy. 00:00:58.66\00:01:00.48 Oh, I think it's mutual. 00:01:00.49\00:01:01.93 My children loved your teaching as well. 00:01:01.94\00:01:04.64 You're a camp meeting speaker and scholar, 00:01:04.65\00:01:07.34 but a student of scripture. 00:01:07.35\00:01:08.59 And that's what we want to do there. That's what-- 00:01:08.60\00:01:09.71 We're just sitting here with our Bibles together 00:01:09.72\00:01:12.50 setting God's word and we're so glad 00:01:12.51\00:01:14.43 that each of you can join us. 00:01:14.44\00:01:16.25 It's been an exciting journey so far 00:01:16.26\00:01:18.11 as we've been going through Matthew. 00:01:18.12\00:01:20.15 I think you really enjoy, and learn and grow 00:01:20.16\00:01:24.11 as God speaks to us through His word today. 00:01:24.12\00:01:26.62 Let's get into the text after prayer. 00:01:26.63\00:01:29.42 Ranko, would you lead us in prayer 00:01:29.43\00:01:30.64 that God will guide us in our study? Yes. Yes. 00:01:30.65\00:01:33.03 Our Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us 00:01:33.04\00:01:38.01 this beautiful Gospel, Gospel of Matthew, 00:01:38.02\00:01:41.49 as we are going now trying to understand 00:01:41.50\00:01:43.77 those different texts in this Gospel. 00:01:43.78\00:01:47.08 Please give us the sermon and the Holy Spirit 00:01:47.09\00:01:50.03 to guide us in understanding, 00:01:50.04\00:01:51.95 when sometimes difficult statements 00:01:51.96\00:01:53.71 that we find in the text. 00:01:53.72\00:01:55.64 Thank you for Your help, thank you for being with us. 00:01:55.65\00:01:58.42 And we pray all of this 00:01:58.43\00:02:00.13 in the precious name of our savior, 00:02:00.14\00:02:01.98 Jesus Christ, amen. Amen. 00:02:01.99\00:02:05.65 Well, we've been following the path of Jesus' ministry. 00:02:05.66\00:02:10.26 It's taken us from His genealogy and His birth, 00:02:10.27\00:02:14.27 His baptism, the temptations, 00:02:14.28\00:02:16.35 His early ministry, His ministry in Galilee. 00:02:16.36\00:02:18.99 But now He is moving geographically 00:02:19.00\00:02:20.91 towards Jerusalem. Jerusalem. 00:02:20.92\00:02:22.54 He is moving towards the cross. Yes. 00:02:22.55\00:02:25.32 And the shadow of the cross leans 00:02:25.33\00:02:27.75 over all these pages, doesn't it? 00:02:27.76\00:02:29.50 As we get into these Chapters. 00:02:29.51\00:02:30.94 And Jesus knew that after the cross, 00:02:30.95\00:02:34.98 He will ascend there to heaven, 00:02:34.99\00:02:36.16 He will leave His disciples. 00:02:36.17\00:02:38.75 But evidently the disciples were not ready. 00:02:38.76\00:02:41.30 They were supposed to continue to work with Jesus Christ. 00:02:41.31\00:02:44.35 But evidently their focus was not on the mission. 00:02:44.36\00:02:47.96 Their focus was on themselves, 00:02:47.97\00:02:50.08 who will get the most benefit in the kingdom of heaven 00:02:50.09\00:02:55.04 that Jesus would establish. All right. 00:02:55.05\00:02:57.39 Today we're going to explore Matthew 19. 00:02:57.40\00:02:59.98 But let's go back and catch the flow just bit, little bit. 00:02:59.99\00:03:02.91 In Chapter 18, we noticed that, 00:03:02.92\00:03:05.90 "God wants us to love the least, 00:03:05.91\00:03:08.85 those who are on the fringes on the edges. 00:03:08.86\00:03:11.58 Even those in the church that may seem to be the lest, 00:03:11.59\00:03:14.91 the less spiritual or the least talented 00:03:14.92\00:03:17.96 or the least capable." 00:03:17.97\00:03:19.33 And part of that loving is how we treat them 00:03:19.34\00:03:22.32 when they slip, when they stumble, 00:03:22.33\00:03:23.69 when there's a lost sheep, you know. 00:03:23.70\00:03:25.83 And he ties in this discussion of church disciple 00:03:25.84\00:03:29.80 in Matthew Chapter 18, 00:03:29.81\00:03:31.74 with a parable about forgiveness. 00:03:31.75\00:03:33.33 Tell us a little bit about that parable. 00:03:33.34\00:03:34.88 You know, Glenn, there is one thing that amazes me. 00:03:34.89\00:03:38.98 God said that through Moses to the people of Israel, 00:03:38.99\00:03:41.58 you'll always have poor people and yourself. 00:03:41.59\00:03:45.74 When you go to the New Testament 00:03:45.75\00:03:47.10 evidently Jesus does something more. 00:03:47.11\00:03:50.02 We will always have people who have spiritual progress. 00:03:50.03\00:03:54.14 We will have in our midst. 00:03:54.15\00:03:55.59 Sometimes they write in the mirror, 00:03:55.60\00:03:56.99 the ones we struggle. 00:03:57.00\00:03:58.47 And the question is how to relate in the church 00:03:58.48\00:04:02.04 that is actually the visible manifestation 00:04:02.05\00:04:05.83 of the kingdom of heaven on earth. 00:04:05.84\00:04:08.19 Actually this is what Matthew 18 is all about is, 00:04:08.20\00:04:13.40 "if we have the people who have the spiritual progress, 00:04:13.41\00:04:16.32 people who fall even in sin." 00:04:16.33\00:04:19.27 Jesus says, "You who are spiritual, 00:04:19.28\00:04:21.37 you're supposed to go and find those people 00:04:21.38\00:04:24.70 and restore them into the fellowship 00:04:24.71\00:04:26.75 of that kingdom of heaven." 00:04:26.76\00:04:30.06 Realizing what Jesus' calling into, 00:04:30.07\00:04:32.85 Peter comes and ask question. 00:04:32.86\00:04:35.15 And in the ancient world as in much of the world today, 00:04:35.16\00:04:38.88 revenge and honor and respect are very high priorities. 00:04:38.89\00:04:42.22 And he comes and he says, 00:04:42.23\00:04:43.40 "Now how many times should I ask a brother to-- 00:04:43.41\00:04:45.97 you know, how many times can I forgive?" 00:04:45.98\00:04:48.18 It says in Matthew Chapter 18 verse 21. 00:04:48.19\00:04:51.66 Peter came up and said to Him, 00:04:51.67\00:04:52.75 "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, 00:04:52.76\00:04:56.66 and I forgive him?" 00:04:56.67\00:04:57.66 So it's about a brother, not someone else. 00:04:57.67\00:04:59.56 But it's--when a brother sins against me 00:04:59.57\00:05:02.25 and Peter gives a suggestion. 00:05:02.26\00:05:04.23 Okay, Glenn, let's keep in mind 00:05:04.24\00:05:06.05 that this is reference to verse 15. That's right. 00:05:06.06\00:05:08.72 You see, if you go to verse 15, 00:05:08.73\00:05:10.60 "if your brother sins," actually in Greek says, 00:05:10.61\00:05:14.32 "against you go and try to save the brother." 00:05:14.33\00:05:20.60 So now Peter says, "so how many times?" 00:05:20.61\00:05:23.52 If the person slips away, if the person sins, 00:05:23.53\00:05:27.05 how many times am I supposed to do it? 00:05:27.06\00:05:29.37 And among the Jewish people in the first century 00:05:29.38\00:05:33.29 there was a teaching believe according to the Rabbis, 00:05:33.30\00:05:36.98 you're supposed to forgive three times. 00:05:36.99\00:05:40.43 And that was generous compared to the Pagans 00:05:40.44\00:05:42.26 which was "eye for an eye." Yes. 00:05:42.27\00:05:44.01 Law of revenge. So they're doing better. 00:05:44.02\00:05:46.62 But Peter, I wanted to be very generous, not three times. 00:05:46.63\00:05:51.95 He said, seven times hoping that 00:05:51.96\00:05:54.63 Jesus will tap on his shoulder and He say, 00:05:54.64\00:05:57.85 "oh, Peter, you are so generous." 00:05:57.86\00:06:00.32 But you know, what was the answer 00:06:00.33\00:06:01.74 that Jesus gave to Peter? 00:06:01.75\00:06:04.23 Well, Jesus responses, 00:06:04.24\00:06:05.69 "I don't say to you seven times but seventy times so." 00:06:05.70\00:06:09.71 I don't know, I have-- something very interesting 00:06:09.72\00:06:15.31 that I discovered because the warning 00:06:15.32\00:06:17.86 that we find here in verse 22 00:06:17.87\00:06:20.90 is really the reflection of Daniel Chapter 9. 00:06:20.91\00:06:25.40 When God used seventy times seven 00:06:25.41\00:06:30.67 as a metaphoric saying of the great forgiveness, 00:06:30.68\00:06:36.41 of course, this is the prophecy 00:06:36.42\00:06:39.62 a day for year, there, there. 00:06:39.63\00:06:41.48 But the very saying, 00:06:41.49\00:06:43.04 the very concept seventy times seven 00:06:43.05\00:06:45.31 refers to the great forgiveness 00:06:45.32\00:06:47.85 that God wanted to show to His people 00:06:47.86\00:06:49.61 and this is exactly what Jesus get his-- 00:06:49.62\00:06:51.68 So when we're tempted to say, "How long should I forgive?" 00:06:51.69\00:06:54.64 Jesus is saying, "Well, look at how long 00:06:54.65\00:06:57.05 God has forgiven you." 00:06:57.06\00:06:58.08 It's a great- It's a God standard. 00:06:58.09\00:06:59.39 It's a great forgiveness. 00:06:59.40\00:07:00.48 And now to illustrate Peter was confused completely. 00:07:00.49\00:07:04.32 I mean can you imagine seven generous? 00:07:04.33\00:07:06.34 Now Jesus is great forgiveness and now we have the parable. 00:07:06.35\00:07:09.61 What is Glenn, parable all about? 00:07:09.62\00:07:11.94 "Therefore the kingdom of heaven 00:07:11.95\00:07:13.43 may be compared to a king 00:07:13.44\00:07:14.71 who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 00:07:14.72\00:07:16.42 When he began the reckoning, 00:07:16.43\00:07:17.95 one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents 00:07:17.96\00:07:20.37 and he could not pay. 00:07:20.38\00:07:21.95 His Lord ordered him to be sold 00:07:21.96\00:07:24.02 with his wife and children all that he had 00:07:24.03\00:07:26.14 and payment to be made. 00:07:26.15\00:07:27.75 So the servant fell on his knees 00:07:27.76\00:07:29.15 and pouring him, Lord have patience with me 00:07:29.16\00:07:31.79 and I will pay you everything. 00:07:31.80\00:07:34.00 And out of pity for him, 00:07:34.01\00:07:35.06 the Lord of that servant released him 00:07:35.07\00:07:37.14 and forgave the debt." 00:07:37.15\00:07:39.07 Boy, if only the story stop there, 00:07:39.08\00:07:40.47 it'd be such a beautiful story. Yeah, fantastic. 00:07:40.48\00:07:42.56 But unfortunately it continues. 00:07:42.57\00:07:44.98 But that same servant, "As he went out, 00:07:44.99\00:07:47.06 came across one of his fellow servants 00:07:47.07\00:07:49.47 who owed him a hundred denarii, 00:07:49.48\00:07:51.11 and seized him by the throat, and said, 'Pay what you owe.' 00:07:51.12\00:07:55.37 So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, 00:07:55.38\00:07:58.15 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' 00:07:58.16\00:08:00.81 But he refused. 00:08:00.82\00:08:02.23 And he went and put him in prison 00:08:02.24\00:08:03.50 until he should pay his debt. 00:08:03.51\00:08:05.37 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, 00:08:05.38\00:08:07.44 they were greatly distressed, 00:08:07.45\00:08:08.51 and they went and reported to their Lord 00:08:08.52\00:08:09.82 all that had taken place. 00:08:09.83\00:08:11.86 Then his Lord summoned him and said to him, 00:08:11.87\00:08:14.34 'You wicked servant! 00:08:14.35\00:08:15.42 I forgave you all that debt because you besought me 00:08:15.43\00:08:18.67 and you should not have mercy on your fellow servant 00:08:18.68\00:08:21.36 as I had mercy on you?' 00:08:21.37\00:08:23.03 And in anger his Lord delivered him to the jailers 00:08:23.04\00:08:25.83 until he should pay all his debt. 00:08:25.84\00:08:27.92 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, 00:08:27.93\00:08:31.11 if you do not forgive your brother from the heart." 00:08:31.12\00:08:33.10 Now we need to remember that parables 00:08:33.11\00:08:34.96 not every detail is an allegory. 00:08:34.97\00:08:37.27 Actually-- God has not liked this. 00:08:37.28\00:08:39.12 Actually verse 35 tell us the purpose. 00:08:39.13\00:08:41.76 What will happen to us 00:08:41.77\00:08:43.44 if we do not forgive our brothers? 00:08:43.45\00:08:45.22 Keep in mind that Peter asked Jesus, 00:08:45.23\00:08:48.93 "how many times should I forgive to my brother?" 00:08:48.94\00:08:52.39 And Jesus moves from the number 00:08:52.40\00:08:55.28 to the practical application. 00:08:55.29\00:08:56.55 By the way, how much did the person, 00:08:56.56\00:09:00.36 the servant owed to his master. 00:09:00.37\00:09:03.36 He says, "ten thousand talents." 00:09:03.37\00:09:05.92 Please, so many times when we read the Bible, 00:09:05.93\00:09:10.66 we--it's not clear to ask what meaning of that, 00:09:10.67\00:09:14.37 ten thousand talents. 00:09:14.38\00:09:16.03 In the time of Jesus, Galilee, Judea 00:09:16.04\00:09:20.54 and another territory known as Idumea, 00:09:20.55\00:09:23.59 altogether, okay, their taxes were 600 talents. 00:09:23.60\00:09:31.49 Here we're talking about 00:09:31.50\00:09:32.69 ten thousand talents how many? 00:09:32.70\00:09:35.47 How many years of taxes just from that territory? 00:09:35.48\00:09:38.52 It's something that the person, 00:09:38.53\00:09:41.63 one individual cannot pay. It's an impossible pay. 00:09:41.64\00:09:44.21 It's an impossible pay. All right. 00:09:44.22\00:09:45.61 But you see, another person owe to this servant 00:09:45.62\00:09:51.12 whom it was forgiven, 100 denarii, 00:09:51.13\00:09:55.39 denarius actually was a daily wage. 00:09:55.40\00:09:59.27 One hundred, we're talking about three months of salary. 00:09:59.28\00:10:02.60 For one person compare to the taxes of a whole region. 00:10:02.61\00:10:05.16 For one person is. 00:10:05.17\00:10:06.46 So Jesus tried something to tell us here is 00:10:06.47\00:10:10.19 the person was forgiven, 00:10:10.20\00:10:11.37 something that he could not repay at all. 00:10:11.38\00:10:15.33 It was forgiven to him. 00:10:15.34\00:10:17.86 On another side he could not forgive to the person 00:10:17.87\00:10:20.02 something that was really not too much. 00:10:20.03\00:10:22.60 It was too much. It was series. 00:10:22.61\00:10:24.48 Jesus never diminishes. 00:10:24.49\00:10:26.15 And you know, put less than significance of that. 00:10:26.16\00:10:30.18 It is that. 00:10:30.19\00:10:31.55 But in comparison, what God has done for me. 00:10:31.56\00:10:35.83 And what I'm supposed to forgive to my brother, 00:10:35.84\00:10:39.39 keep in mind, expression is my brother or my sister is, 00:10:39.40\00:10:42.71 it cannot be compared with what heart did to me. 00:10:42.72\00:10:45.19 So let's make sure we catch the picture 00:10:45.20\00:10:46.86 and that is that our debt to God, 00:10:46.87\00:10:50.66 is so immense we can never repay it. 00:10:50.67\00:10:53.42 Glenn, you know--But sometimes the little offenses 00:10:53.43\00:10:55.86 that someone does to us, in comparison-- 00:10:55.87\00:10:59.53 You see, we're talking about the little offences. 00:10:59.54\00:11:01.88 There is no offence, 00:11:01.89\00:11:04.35 that my brother can do to me so great. 00:11:04.36\00:11:08.69 In comparison, you see, Glenn, 00:11:08.70\00:11:10.78 I can owe to you $1,000. 00:11:10.79\00:11:12.66 Boy, $1,000 is big, huh? It's your wish-- 00:11:12.67\00:11:14.80 It's one cheque, it's one cheque that-- 00:11:14.81\00:11:16.74 that we receive in salary and it's big. 00:11:16.75\00:11:19.73 But can you imagine, and understand 00:11:19.74\00:11:20.84 that somebody gave me one million dollars 00:11:20.85\00:11:25.35 then $1,000 really it's not the big deal at all. 00:11:25.36\00:11:29.76 See when we focus on ourselves in the church 00:11:29.77\00:11:32.42 on the issues what people to do to me, 00:11:32.43\00:11:34.48 it's a big deal. 00:11:34.49\00:11:35.53 But when I focus on God, when I focus on Christ, 00:11:35.54\00:11:38.67 what Christ did to me, how much I'm forgiven? 00:11:38.68\00:11:42.30 Then all those offences, they really become 00:11:42.31\00:11:45.37 almost insignificant in the light what God did for me. 00:11:45.38\00:11:48.80 We need to move on, but let's hold the thought 00:11:48.81\00:11:51.66 that also remember this is tidy 00:11:51.67\00:11:54.43 and with how we treat those in the church 00:11:54.44\00:11:56.33 in terms of discipline, those who have slipped, 00:11:56.34\00:11:58.46 those who have not followed faithfully. 00:11:58.47\00:12:02.46 Let's have that forgiving spirit. 00:12:02.47\00:12:03.94 Okay, Ranko, we've got-- If everybody in the church 00:12:03.95\00:12:05.72 thinks how much I am forgiven, 00:12:05.73\00:12:07.61 we would not have too many problems 00:12:07.62\00:12:10.15 among the members of the community of believers. Yes. 00:12:10.16\00:12:13.82 Now Jesus moves from Galilee and enters into Judea. 00:12:13.83\00:12:17.82 So we're in Chapter 19? Yes. 00:12:17.83\00:12:19.71 And the Pharisees come. 00:12:19.72\00:12:22.48 We're gonna come to the question in a moment, 00:12:22.49\00:12:24.48 but give us a little background. 00:12:24.49\00:12:25.69 They come with a question of Jesus about divorce. 00:12:25.70\00:12:29.73 What's the background that we should know about it? 00:12:29.74\00:12:31.75 Yeah, Chapter 19 begins, 00:12:31.76\00:12:33.55 "when Jesus had finished these words," 00:12:33.56\00:12:35.69 do you remember that? 00:12:35.70\00:12:36.70 It marks the fourth block of the Gospel of Matthew. 00:12:36.71\00:12:41.43 You know, in the first century among Jews-- 00:12:41.44\00:12:45.79 you know, the Jewish people always have the rabbis, 00:12:45.80\00:12:48.64 the rabbi, that rabbi dies 00:12:48.65\00:12:51.34 the most prominent people of him, 00:12:51.35\00:12:54.56 he would succeed him 00:12:54.57\00:12:56.09 and he would be the next rabbi et cetera. 00:12:56.10\00:12:57.90 However in the first century 00:12:57.91\00:12:59.06 there was something very interesting 00:12:59.07\00:13:01.04 and with the Jewish people, 00:13:01.05\00:13:02.90 they had pair of rabbis for certain period of time. 00:13:02.91\00:13:08.67 And when Jesus was born, and when Jesus was child, 00:13:08.68\00:13:14.11 there was--there two rabbis, pair of rabbis, 00:13:14.12\00:13:16.97 one was Shammai and another one was Hillel. 00:13:16.98\00:13:21.48 They were very prominence, especially Hillel. 00:13:21.49\00:13:23.50 Hillel was liberal. Shammai was very conservative. 00:13:23.51\00:13:27.89 This is what the Torah says, and let's hold it. 00:13:27.90\00:13:32.03 And people were coming to Hillel and asking him, 00:13:32.04\00:13:36.15 "Can I divorce my wife?" 00:13:36.16\00:13:37.33 He said, you know, "you can divorce your wife, 00:13:37.34\00:13:39.67 even if you are displeased 00:13:39.68\00:13:41.86 because of the lunch that should prepared to you." 00:13:41.87\00:13:44.08 And the reason, you're free to do it. 00:13:44.09\00:13:47.40 Shammai, he said, "No. 00:13:47.41\00:13:51.27 It can only be very serious reason, the adultery. 00:13:51.28\00:13:54.92 You can go and divorce your wife." 00:13:54.93\00:13:58.40 So you're talking about the disciples, 00:13:58.41\00:14:00.99 the pupils, they were debating among themselves. 00:14:01.00\00:14:04.51 So now the question that Jesus was asked 00:14:04.52\00:14:08.81 was actually attempting Jesus in which side He will side, 00:14:08.82\00:14:13.22 we have to understand this context 00:14:13.23\00:14:14.73 and we'll see more and more in few minutes-- 00:14:14.74\00:14:16.37 So the Pharisees come to find out 00:14:16.38\00:14:18.44 which school of thought do you agree with 00:14:18.45\00:14:20.06 and it's a trap. 00:14:20.07\00:14:21.13 Because either way his answer would go, they would get him. 00:14:21.14\00:14:23.37 And they could--they could argue with Jesus. Yes. 00:14:23.38\00:14:26.88 So let's find out more about how that trap, 00:14:26.89\00:14:28.83 that question works and Jesus intriguing answer 00:14:28.84\00:14:31.95 when we come back right after our break. 00:14:31.96\00:14:33.55 We'll be right back. 00:14:33.56\00:14:35.50
