We're back to our series of the "Books of the Book" 00:00:01.01\00:00:03.40 exploring the Gospel of Matthew chapter 17. 00:00:03.41\00:00:06.44 Ranko, we were just looking at this experience. 00:00:06.45\00:00:09.87 And we noticed that the disciples, three of them, 00:00:09.88\00:00:13.28 chosen to have the special encounter with Jesus 00:00:13.29\00:00:16.42 as He's revealed in all of His eternal majesty and glory. 00:00:16.43\00:00:20.45 Now tell us how do they respond? 00:00:20.46\00:00:24.75 And what does He instruct them? 00:00:24.76\00:00:26.98 Evidently, these Transfiguration event 00:00:26.99\00:00:32.65 had two purposes, one was for the disciples. 00:00:32.66\00:00:38.96 I mean, can you imagine 00:00:38.97\00:00:41.02 you join Jesus for wrong reasons. 00:00:41.03\00:00:46.79 You have the evidence, this what happens to disciples. 00:00:46.80\00:00:51.19 You have the evidence, 00:00:51.20\00:00:52.66 all evidences that He is that Messiah, 00:00:52.67\00:00:55.19 he is the fulfillment of prophecy. 00:00:55.20\00:00:57.32 But you are with Him hoping that 00:00:57.33\00:00:59.15 He will establish His kingdom. 00:00:59.16\00:01:01.51 All right. And you will be 00:01:01.52\00:01:02.56 The Prime Minister there etcetera. 00:01:02.57\00:01:04.55 However they see your position from all sides are coming 00:01:04.56\00:01:08.79 and then when the disciple saw 00:01:08.80\00:01:10.39 there is nothing about that earthly kingdom. 00:01:10.40\00:01:13.17 We know when Jesus was crucified, 00:01:13.18\00:01:15.27 how much they were disappointed. 00:01:15.28\00:01:16.72 Well there. So the purpose of this 00:01:16.73\00:01:19.93 was to show to the disciples about the real nature of Jesus 00:01:19.94\00:01:26.72 who was-- so they see glorified Christ 00:01:26.73\00:01:29.91 as He was truly is there in the heavenly place. 00:01:29.92\00:01:33.15 So it was for-- you see 00:01:33.16\00:01:34.56 Peter fell down and he said, "Let's stay here." 00:01:34.57\00:01:37.78 They already felt like the kingdom of God. 00:01:37.79\00:01:40.72 When you're in the presence of glorified Christ, 00:01:40.73\00:01:42.51 you are already in the kingdom of God. 00:01:42.52\00:01:45.15 Worship is the response. Worship is-- 00:01:45.16\00:01:46.72 And to show the power of that 00:01:46.73\00:01:48.91 as it says in verse 9, "Now they came down, 00:01:48.92\00:01:51.57 Jesus said, tell the vision to no one", 00:01:51.58\00:01:53.49 until when, "until the son of man 00:01:53.50\00:01:56.50 has risen from the death." 00:01:56.51\00:01:57.50 That's exactly what they did. 00:01:57.51\00:01:59.26 So what happened here on the Mount of Transfiguration? 00:01:59.27\00:02:02.37 It was really to see Jesus in His glory. 00:02:02.38\00:02:04.72 Which Jesus? The same Jesus that Daniel saw 00:02:04.73\00:02:07.37 in chapter 7, "The son of man 00:02:07.38\00:02:09.46 coming in His glory there-- 00:02:09.47\00:02:10.91 The same one they would have sent to Heaven. 00:02:10.92\00:02:13.11 And what a comfort this must have been 00:02:13.12\00:02:14.74 and they shared that experience 00:02:14.75\00:02:16.43 to the other disciples after the resurrection. 00:02:16.44\00:02:18.80 So that's the first reason for the disciples. 00:02:18.81\00:02:20.57 But there is second reason. All right. 00:02:20.58\00:02:21.91 Evidently Matthew does not tell us the whole story, 00:02:21.92\00:02:26.82 actually what happened to Jesus? 00:02:26.83\00:02:28.17 The question is why did Moses and Elijah come here 00:02:28.18\00:02:33.24 to the Mount of Transfiguration? 00:02:33.25\00:02:35.34 Evidently number one is because Jesus came 00:02:35.35\00:02:39.56 as the fulfillment of what was written about Him in the law 00:02:39.57\00:02:47.24 and the prophets in the Old Testament. 00:02:47.25\00:02:49.17 So there is a continuity. There's continuity, Jesus came. 00:02:49.18\00:02:51.68 So now the representatives of the law and the prophets 00:02:51.69\00:02:57.54 are there to form his ministry but there's something more. 00:02:57.55\00:03:02.36 If we just stay here with the Gospel of Matthew, 00:03:02.37\00:03:04.91 we do not get the complete picture. 00:03:04.92\00:03:07.46 Glenn, let's go to the Gospel of Luke. 00:03:07.47\00:03:10.33 Okay. Luke who got the information 00:03:10.34\00:03:15.35 from Peter for I think his gospel-- 00:03:15.36\00:03:18.65 actually lets hear one element 00:03:18.66\00:03:21.09 which I believe that Peter provided to him. 00:03:21.10\00:03:24.15 It's chapter 17 of-- no sorry, 00:03:24.16\00:03:27.05 chapter 9 of the Gospel of Luke. 00:03:27.06\00:03:29.47 And I would like us to read from 28 to 31. 00:03:29.48\00:03:35.36 Luke chapter 9-- 9:28 to 31, 00:03:35.37\00:03:38.95 to see one element that is here added 00:03:38.96\00:03:42.47 that does not appear in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:03:42.48\00:03:44.88 "Now it came to pass about, eight days after these sayings 00:03:44.89\00:03:47.44 that He took Peter, John, and James 00:03:47.45\00:03:49.38 and went up to the mountain to pray. 00:03:49.39\00:03:50.99 And he prayed and as he prayed 00:03:51.00\00:03:53.30 the appearance of His face was altered, 00:03:53.31\00:03:55.84 and His robe became white and glistering. 00:03:55.85\00:03:57.84 And behold two men 00:03:57.85\00:03:59.28 were with him who were Moses and Elijah, 00:03:59.29\00:04:02.44 who appeared in glory and spoke of his decrease 00:04:02.45\00:04:06.67 which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 00:04:06.68\00:04:09.69 But Peter and those around him were heavy with sleep." 00:04:09.70\00:04:12.21 It's okay now. Actually, 00:04:12.22\00:04:13.41 what are they talking about? 00:04:13.42\00:04:14.92 Let's put it a little bit later language. 00:04:14.93\00:04:17.41 They appear to Jesus talking about his departure. 00:04:17.42\00:04:23.86 The events associated with Jesus 00:04:23.87\00:04:27.27 that will take place there in Jerusalem. 00:04:27.28\00:04:29.33 What are they talking about? The Cross? 00:04:29.34\00:04:31.17 About the crucifixion of Jesus. 00:04:31.18\00:04:33.31 Doesn't it show a marvelously loving God 00:04:33.32\00:04:35.82 who sends these two messengers, from the realms of Heaven, 00:04:35.83\00:04:40.18 to encourage the Son and His journey to the Cross. 00:04:40.19\00:04:43.68 And I would like to take really few minutes 00:04:43.69\00:04:45.86 just to talk about that. 00:04:45.87\00:04:47.06 Why Moses, Elijah? 00:04:47.07\00:04:49.15 Of course, because of the disciples. 00:04:49.16\00:04:50.96 It was the affirmation of the prophecy. 00:04:50.97\00:04:55.53 Yes. The law and the prophets-- 00:04:55.54\00:04:56.90 But why Moses, Elijah because of Jesus? 00:04:56.91\00:05:00.72 What were they doing there with Jesus? 00:05:00.73\00:05:03.22 Can we use a little bit imagination? 00:05:03.23\00:05:06.85 You know, we saw that Jesus several times, 00:05:06.86\00:05:09.71 when He heard that John the Baptist 00:05:09.72\00:05:12.93 was killed then Herod was talking about him, 00:05:12.94\00:05:16.54 Jesus always goes with the solitary place. 00:05:16.55\00:05:18.95 Evidently, Jesus was so much in His thoughts 00:05:18.96\00:05:21.71 about what will happen in Jerusalem. 00:05:21.72\00:05:23.40 We know what happened there in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:05:23.41\00:05:26.65 When Jesus human nature was overwhelmed, 00:05:26.66\00:05:30.49 "Father, if it is possible that this cup," 00:05:30.50\00:05:33.95 which was his death, "can pass by me". 00:05:33.96\00:05:37.14 Jesus evidently needed a special encouragement. 00:05:37.15\00:05:40.35 Keep in mind, just in very short time 00:05:40.36\00:05:42.95 he is there in Jerusalem, 00:05:42.96\00:05:44.38 he knows what will take place to him. 00:05:44.39\00:05:46.74 Now there is a question, why Moses and Elijah? 00:05:46.75\00:05:50.01 Who was Moses? 00:05:50.02\00:05:51.97 How many times Moses was discouraged? 00:05:51.98\00:05:58.71 How many times Moses worried? 00:05:58.72\00:06:02.70 And he needed a special encouragement from God, 00:06:02.71\00:06:06.20 especially, how Moses finished his life. 00:06:06.21\00:06:08.78 He worried, he will not enter the promise land. 00:06:08.79\00:06:11.01 Finally, after his death, 00:06:11.02\00:06:12.35 he realized that he was resurrected. 00:06:12.36\00:06:14.64 That actually God prepared something better for him. 00:06:14.65\00:06:17.05 So he's an example of someone who's resurrected 00:06:17.06\00:06:19.73 as Jesus will be resurrected. 00:06:19.74\00:06:20.97 Who can encourage somebody in better way that the person 00:06:20.98\00:06:25.01 who has gone through the same experience like that person? 00:06:25.02\00:06:27.65 What about Elijah? 00:06:27.66\00:06:28.85 How many times Elijah was discouraged? 00:06:28.86\00:06:31.78 Do you remember that? 00:06:31.79\00:06:32.90 After that great day of reformation, 00:06:32.91\00:06:35.78 he fled away far away Horeb 00:06:35.79\00:06:37.85 and God had to come to encourage him. 00:06:37.86\00:06:40.10 So can you imagine those two human beings 00:06:40.11\00:06:44.53 who are, according to the Bible, resurrected. 00:06:44.54\00:06:47.30 Moses-- Resurrected. 00:06:47.31\00:06:50.65 Resurrected. Elijah was taken alive. 00:06:50.66\00:06:53.67 Now they're coming here. Can I say something more? 00:06:53.68\00:06:57.17 During the Old Testament times when they were alive, 00:06:57.18\00:06:59.51 Jesus came to encourage them. Yes. 00:06:59.52\00:07:01.73 Now they are coming to encourage Jesus 00:07:01.74\00:07:05.89 on His way to Jerusalem. 00:07:05.90\00:07:07.69 And when I read this text I said, "Wow, I am amazed." 00:07:07.70\00:07:13.79 So there is a heavenly conversation that takes place 00:07:13.80\00:07:16.51 on that mountain on earth. 00:07:16.52\00:07:17.96 And inspiration is, kind of, close the door 00:07:17.97\00:07:20.80 to all that was said, but we know the topic. 00:07:20.81\00:07:23.55 The topic is the Cross. 00:07:23.56\00:07:26.12 Evidently, they tried to encourage Jesus 00:07:26.13\00:07:28.81 because Jesus was supposed also to die for them. 00:07:28.82\00:07:31.47 As Jesus has, as it says in the other gospels, 00:07:31.48\00:07:34.72 He's set his face towards Jerusalem. 00:07:34.73\00:07:36.61 He is going to the Cross to die. 00:07:36.62\00:07:39.52 Yes and it really amazes me with great amazement as-- 00:07:39.53\00:07:44.46 I'm using the language of the Bible. 00:07:44.47\00:07:46.15 I am astonished when I read this, 00:07:46.16\00:07:48.27 but there is another group, there is another camp. 00:07:48.28\00:07:51.42 The rest of the disciples are there under the mountain. 00:07:51.43\00:07:54.61 And finally Jesus with the "three" disciples 00:07:54.62\00:07:57.49 they're coming down and what's going on here? 00:07:57.50\00:07:59.78 And this is such a contrast, It's-- 00:07:59.79\00:08:01.32 there such an irony, a paradox here. 00:08:01.33\00:08:03.62 On the-- up on the mountain, 00:08:03.63\00:08:05.58 this vision of heaven, this wonderful experience 00:08:05.59\00:08:08.61 of transfiguration and they come down. 00:08:08.62\00:08:11.39 And boy, it's rough sometime 00:08:11.40\00:08:12.95 when we come down off the mountains. 00:08:12.96\00:08:14.13 I'm sure, Ranko, 00:08:14.14\00:08:15.13 you've had those times of mountain top experiences. 00:08:15.14\00:08:18.99 And then we come down to the valley 00:08:19.00\00:08:20.38 and when you come down, 00:08:20.39\00:08:21.57 let's see what happens here verse 14, 00:08:21.58\00:08:24.08 "And when they had come down to the multitude, 00:08:24.09\00:08:25.93 a man came to him kneeling down to him 00:08:25.94\00:08:28.17 and saying, 'Lord, have mercy on my son 00:08:28.18\00:08:31.02 for he is an epileptic and suffers severely, 00:08:31.03\00:08:33.41 for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 00:08:33.42\00:08:36.38 So I brought him to your disciples 00:08:36.39\00:08:38.49 but they could not cure him.'" 00:08:38.50\00:08:41.34 So what's going on? Let me again-- 00:08:41.35\00:08:45.36 we have to make reasonable assumption what's going on. 00:08:45.37\00:08:48.12 Disciples were with Jesus, hey, for three and half years, 00:08:48.13\00:08:52.79 they participate with Jesus in heal activities. 00:08:52.80\00:08:55.65 We know that Jesus authorized them. 00:08:55.66\00:08:58.26 Remember that Jesus-- They went out on the Mission 00:08:58.27\00:08:59.90 Jesus sent them out. Yes. 00:08:59.91\00:09:00.99 According to the Gospel of Luke 00:09:01.00\00:09:02.67 they came back to Jesus and they said, 00:09:02.68\00:09:04.75 "The Lord, even the demons they obey us." 00:09:04.76\00:09:08.89 What is always the problem? Even the disciples-- 00:09:08.90\00:09:13.76 can I say something? Even the pastors. 00:09:13.77\00:09:16.25 People who are dealing with spiritual things, 00:09:16.26\00:09:19.27 they can come to the point of their life 00:09:19.28\00:09:23.13 take everything for granted, rely on their own abilities, 00:09:23.14\00:09:28.07 on their own power, and to do a routine work 00:09:28.08\00:09:32.85 of preaching with the gospel and helping people. 00:09:32.86\00:09:35.42 This is what happened with the disciples. 00:09:35.43\00:09:37.28 The person brought his demon possessed 00:09:37.29\00:09:40.83 and they said, "Don't worry. 00:09:40.84\00:09:42.41 We will now do it very, very fast. 00:09:42.42\00:09:46.32 Don't worry." But they had no power. 00:09:46.33\00:09:47.40 They had no power, It was a routine work. 00:09:47.41\00:09:51.02 Boy, when Jesus heard it, what did Jesus say? 00:09:51.03\00:09:53.97 "You unbelieving--" Keep in mind Jesus, 00:09:53.98\00:09:56.99 he's not talking here about the Pharisees. 00:09:57.00\00:09:58.89 Yes. He is talking about disciples. 00:09:58.90\00:10:00.62 "You unbelieving and perverted generation 00:10:00.63\00:10:04.47 how long shall I be with you?" 00:10:04.48\00:10:07.11 I don't know is Jesus here adressing the demons? 00:10:07.12\00:10:10.22 Not yet, Not yet. He's talking to the disciples. 00:10:10.23\00:10:15.11 Yes, But you know, Ranko, 00:10:15.12\00:10:16.44 let's not diminish the challenge to their faith. 00:10:16.45\00:10:19.09 Oh, yeah. 00:10:19.10\00:10:20.14 If someone came to them with this, 00:10:20.15\00:10:22.83 I mean, I've a friend of mine 00:10:22.84\00:10:24.29 who is a missionary in another place. 00:10:24.30\00:10:26.26 And someone came to him of pagan background. 00:10:26.27\00:10:30.65 Their son had died and he brought the baby 00:10:30.66\00:10:33.01 and said, "Do you believe in the resurrection? 00:10:33.02\00:10:35.25 Pray that he will be raised?" I mean, this is a time 00:10:35.26\00:10:39.08 to put up your faith or shut up. 00:10:39.09\00:10:41.11 It's a time to be tested. 00:10:41.12\00:10:42.88 A boy is brought and they say, "Heal him", 00:10:42.89\00:10:45.95 and they are powerless.
