Hi, welcome to the Books of the Book series here on 3ABN. 00:00:21.16\00:00:24.12 We're exploring the gospel of Mathew. 00:00:24.13\00:00:26.58 It's been a delightful experience 00:00:26.59\00:00:28.24 so far getting into scripture seeking God's 00:00:28.25\00:00:31.52 word, understanding Him. 00:00:31.53\00:00:33.41 I want to thank our teacher 00:00:33.42\00:00:34.48 Ranko Stefanovic, for being with us. 00:00:34.49\00:00:36.24 Ranko, it's being great to have you with us. 00:00:36.25\00:00:38.20 You're professor of New Testament 00:00:38.21\00:00:39.38 at Andrew's University for Theological Seminary. 00:00:39.39\00:00:42.25 It's wonderful to study scripture together, isn't it? 00:00:42.26\00:00:44.29 Yes, Glenn and it's a great joy 00:00:44.30\00:00:47.98 to be with you here to participate in this program. 00:00:47.99\00:00:51.09 You teach at Andrews University 00:00:51.10\00:00:52.78 there in the department of Religion 00:00:52.79\00:00:55.37 and I know that you've a great passion for ministry. 00:00:55.38\00:00:59.18 It's just a joy. Let's get right into God's word. 00:00:59.19\00:01:02.01 First we wanna seek the Lord. 00:01:02.02\00:01:03.90 We need His guidance. 00:01:03.91\00:01:05.11 So let's pray together. 00:01:05.12\00:01:06.85 Father, before we open Your word, 00:01:06.86\00:01:08.85 before we open our mouths and talk about it. 00:01:08.86\00:01:11.52 We wanna be sure that we're in harmony 00:01:11.53\00:01:13.30 with You, so we come to You now. 00:01:13.31\00:01:15.81 Take anything that might pull us away from You 00:01:15.82\00:01:19.24 and God we just wanna surrender our lives. 00:01:19.25\00:01:21.61 We commit ourselves to You as we study 00:01:21.62\00:01:23.97 Your word once again, in Jesus name, amen. 00:01:23.98\00:01:28.65 Well, Ranko, we've been looking at the movement 00:01:28.66\00:01:31.24 of the story of Jesus in the gospel according to Mathew. 00:01:31.25\00:01:34.32 And we've brought our guests 00:01:34.33\00:01:38.09 and our visitors and our listeners, 00:01:38.10\00:01:40.92 our viewers all up to Chapter 16. 00:01:40.93\00:01:44.19 What's the story been so far? 00:01:44.20\00:01:45.79 Tell us about the Jesus 00:01:45.80\00:01:46.94 that we've met in Mathew up to Chapter 16. 00:01:46.95\00:01:49.83 Yes, the very beginning we saw the Jesus 00:01:49.84\00:01:53.18 began His ministry by preaching 00:01:53.19\00:01:56.56 and teaching people in synagogues. 00:01:56.57\00:02:00.12 But evidently His teaching 00:02:00.13\00:02:02.30 did not side well with the Pharisees. 00:02:02.31\00:02:05.66 And in some later period of Jesus' ministry, 00:02:05.67\00:02:10.04 we have a strong opposition 00:02:10.05\00:02:12.34 of the Pharisees with His teaching. 00:02:12.35\00:02:14.56 So we saw that Jesus moves to the hill area in the open, 00:02:14.57\00:02:19.33 open field there teaching people. 00:02:19.34\00:02:21.72 But the Pharisees are there watching Him constantly. 00:02:21.73\00:02:24.82 Then we know that John the Baptists was beheaded. 00:02:24.83\00:02:29.10 Evidently, it was very, very hard on Jesus, 00:02:29.11\00:02:31.34 and Jesus saw the death of John the Baptist, 00:02:31.35\00:02:35.29 His own death that He anticipated to come. 00:02:35.30\00:02:38.84 And then we saw that feeding 5,000 people 00:02:38.85\00:02:42.53 and the attempt of Satan, okay to track side Jesus 00:02:42.54\00:02:48.42 from His determination to go, to die on the cross, 00:02:48.43\00:02:52.87 to die on behalf of human beings. 00:02:52.88\00:02:54.74 So, from that time on we see the opposition is increasing. 00:02:54.75\00:02:58.48 Threat is everywhere. 00:02:58.49\00:03:00.41 Spies are everywhere and we see Jesus 00:03:00.42\00:03:05.04 coming into open confrontation with the Pharisees. 00:03:05.05\00:03:08.20 Actually that opposition was initiated by the Pharisees. 00:03:08.21\00:03:11.54 Okay and it is with that thought 00:03:11.55\00:03:14.20 we are now coming to Chapter 16. 00:03:14.21\00:03:18.21 As we begin Chapter 16, Ranko. 00:03:18.22\00:03:20.63 The first verse tells us the Pharisees and Sadducees came. 00:03:20.64\00:03:23.74 It'd probably be good for us to pause 00:03:23.75\00:03:25.50 and make sure we kind of recognize these two groups. 00:03:25.51\00:03:27.96 tell us, Pharisees, Sadducees, 00:03:27.97\00:03:30.48 are they are quite different. 00:03:30.49\00:03:31.75 Tell us about them. 00:03:31.76\00:03:32.81 Actually at the time of Jesus in 1st Century. 00:03:32.82\00:03:36.51 They're two religious parties if we can call them. 00:03:36.52\00:03:40.52 Some people call them sects there in Palestine 00:03:40.53\00:03:44.38 of which Pharisees and Sadducees were probably 00:03:44.39\00:03:48.68 the most prominent ones. 00:03:48.69\00:03:52.78 Pharisees was the group 00:03:52.79\00:03:57.49 that had the strong determination 00:03:57.50\00:04:02.55 to study the will of God, the Torah, okay. 00:04:02.56\00:04:06.68 And in the same way to instruct 00:04:06.69\00:04:08.36 the people into the will of God. 00:04:08.37\00:04:11.09 So they started they dedicated themselves to study 00:04:11.10\00:04:14.08 the Torah and they went all around 00:04:14.09\00:04:17.10 and most of them were laymen. 00:04:17.11\00:04:18.78 They went all around to instruct 00:04:18.79\00:04:20.79 the people and they did not want 00:04:20.80\00:04:23.25 the Babylonian exile to be repeated. 00:04:23.26\00:04:25.31 Now, there was another threat its Rome 00:04:25.32\00:04:27.76 there and they thought that they're faithful God 00:04:27.77\00:04:30.60 and entire Israel comeback to God and to the Torah. 00:04:30.61\00:04:33.60 That God will somehow visit His people and deliver them. 00:04:33.61\00:04:38.43 They really were faithful to this scripture 00:04:38.44\00:04:42.07 most of them where good people. 00:04:42.08\00:04:45.06 However there is special group of Pharisees 00:04:45.07\00:04:48.64 that were there in Jerusalem, they were wealthy ones 00:04:48.65\00:04:51.25 and they were not the ones 00:04:51.26\00:04:54.53 who are positive characters in the four gospels. 00:04:54.54\00:04:59.23 Sadducees was a priestly class. 00:04:59.24\00:05:03.29 Not all priests were Sadducees, okay. 00:05:03.30\00:05:06.93 Okay. But all Sadducees were priests. 00:05:06.94\00:05:09.49 They were wealthy ones. 00:05:09.50\00:05:11.11 By the way when we read the gospel says, 00:05:11.12\00:05:14.22 they really are stealing money from people. 00:05:14.23\00:05:16.81 They use advantage of the temple 00:05:16.82\00:05:19.32 they develop entire business there around the temple. 00:05:19.33\00:05:22.91 They were very liberal in the teachings. 00:05:22.92\00:05:25.12 All their goal was to protect their wealth 00:05:25.13\00:05:28.29 and to take as much money from people as possible. 00:05:28.30\00:05:32.47 The two parties they did not like each other. 00:05:32.48\00:05:36.75 But there is something very interesting is. 00:05:36.76\00:05:39.06 In their effort to destroy Jesus, 00:05:39.07\00:05:41.76 see these two groups are mentioned here together. 00:05:41.77\00:05:45.31 Now the Sadducees, they compromise more with Romans 00:05:45.32\00:05:50.17 in order to keep their system going, 00:05:50.18\00:05:52.80 their scheme that they had of the temple. 00:05:52.81\00:05:54.72 But they were centered more in Jerusalem. 00:05:54.73\00:05:56.89 That's why they don't have as much of a conflict 00:05:56.90\00:05:58.88 with Jesus early in His ministry. 00:05:58.89\00:06:00.84 But Jesus was now became a threat to them, 00:06:00.85\00:06:03.44 because they're afraid if something 00:06:03.45\00:06:05.89 happens because of Jesus teachings and the Romans 00:06:05.90\00:06:08.50 come to punish the-- people etc., who'll suffer? 00:06:08.51\00:06:11.05 They'll suffer because all their wealth will be gone. 00:06:11.06\00:06:13.50 So He's threatening. 00:06:13.51\00:06:14.66 He's threatening to them. 00:06:14.67\00:06:16.00 Jesus' teaching present a threat. 00:06:16.01\00:06:17.84 The same was with the Pharisees. 00:06:17.85\00:06:18.99 They were rich Pharisees, they're from Jerusalem. 00:06:19.00\00:06:21.98 So these two opposing groups unite to come after Jesus. 00:06:21.99\00:06:25.56 Unite together. They didn't like but the common 00:06:25.57\00:06:28.87 course actually united them together. 00:06:28.88\00:06:31.85 All right where should we go in Chapter 16? 00:06:31.86\00:06:34.07 Yeah, we go Chapter 16 00:06:34.08\00:06:35.73 and you'll see that we don't want now 00:06:35.74\00:06:37.73 to go detail by detail, but they are there Jesus 00:06:37.74\00:06:42.16 and asking question after the question, 00:06:42.17\00:06:44.20 group after group trying to confuse Jesus. 00:06:44.21\00:06:47.21 You know, somehow that they have a material later 00:06:47.22\00:06:50.43 to accuse him, how He was deceiving people. 00:06:50.44\00:06:53.57 How He was against the Mosaic Law etc. 00:06:53.58\00:06:57.09 But praise God Jesus was always able to respond to them. 00:06:57.10\00:07:01.10 So they were not able really to hard upon Jesus there. 00:07:01.11\00:07:05.10 It's interesting that He tells His disciples. 00:07:05.11\00:07:08.35 Verse 6 of Chapter 16, 00:07:08.36\00:07:10.79 "Take heed and beware of the leaven 00:07:10.80\00:07:12.76 of the Pharisees and Sadducees." 00:07:12.77\00:07:15.04 So He's giving a warning to His disciples. 00:07:15.05\00:07:17.81 These religious leaders especially Pharisees, 00:07:17.82\00:07:19.86 they were well looked up to. 00:07:19.87\00:07:22.05 So, Glenn, do you remember that when Jesus 00:07:22.06\00:07:25.38 gave that warning about blasphemy 00:07:25.39\00:07:29.97 against the Holy Spirit and part to bless in. 00:07:29.98\00:07:31.79 It was in the context 00:07:31.80\00:07:33.20 of the confrontation with the Pharisees. 00:07:33.21\00:07:36.32 So from that time on really the Pharisees are sinking, 00:07:36.33\00:07:38.98 sinking there in their unbelief. 00:07:38.99\00:07:41.47 And now with the text that you just read Jesus 00:07:41.48\00:07:45.02 makes the public statement of other Pharisees. 00:07:45.03\00:07:47.49 Jesus reveals the intentions. 00:07:47.50\00:07:50.51 He is not sparing them any longer. 00:07:50.52\00:07:53.13 So you see the confrontation is everywhere. 00:07:53.14\00:07:56.93 Threat to Jesus is everywhere. 00:07:56.94\00:07:59.70 John the Baptist is there. 00:07:59.71\00:08:01.50 By the way if we go back Ezekiel Chapter 14, Glenn. 00:08:01.51\00:08:05.27 What do you read there in verses 1 and 2, Chapter 14? 00:08:05.28\00:08:11.45 "At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports 00:08:11.46\00:08:13.82 about Jesus and he said to his servants, 00:08:13.83\00:08:16.02 "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! 00:08:16.03\00:08:18.91 Therefore these powers are at work" 00:08:18.92\00:08:21.25 Okay, so, what we have even Herod 00:08:21.26\00:08:23.92 is becoming interest in Jesus. 00:08:23.93\00:08:25.64 This is Herod who killed John the Baptist. 00:08:25.65\00:08:30.51 Evidently now he is seeking Jesus 00:08:30.52\00:08:32.23 because keeping in mind his territory thousand, 00:08:32.24\00:08:35.17 thousand people are following Jesus. 00:08:35.18\00:08:37.32 So Jesus is threat to him. 00:08:37.33\00:08:39.47 And evidently Jesus became concerned about His ministry. 00:08:39.48\00:08:44.99 He knew that Satan is messing up. 00:08:45.00\00:08:48.29 So Jesus now decides to do something. 00:08:48.30\00:08:51.83 And this is actually the beginning 00:08:51.84\00:08:53.23 of our new section that we have. 00:08:53.24\00:08:55.02 I will really like to ask you Glenn, 00:08:55.03\00:08:56.60 if you can read verses 13 to 20 of Chapter 16. 00:08:56.61\00:08:59.67 And here we find one of the greatest questions 00:08:59.68\00:09:02.02 that can ever be asked. 00:09:02.03\00:09:03.17 Great questions, it's a very significant important text. 00:09:03.18\00:09:05.30 The Christians have debated about this text. 00:09:05.31\00:09:07.97 Many views were developed on base of this text. 00:09:07.98\00:09:11.78 We would like to take some time. 00:09:11.79\00:09:13.60 "When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, 00:09:13.61\00:09:16.64 He asked His disciples, saying, 00:09:16.65\00:09:18.64 Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am? 00:09:18.65\00:09:23.51 So they said." Well, "Some say John the Baptist, 00:09:23.52\00:09:26.07 some say, Elijah, and others Jeremiah 00:09:26.08\00:09:28.76 or one of the prophets. 00:09:28.77\00:09:30.52 He said to them, But who do you say that I am? 00:09:30.53\00:09:34.53 Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, 00:09:34.54\00:09:37.69 the Son of the living God. 00:09:37.70\00:09:39.44 Jesus answered and said to him, 00:09:39.45\00:09:40.89 Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, 00:09:40.90\00:09:43.69 for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, 00:09:43.70\00:09:46.16 but My Father who is in heaven. 00:09:46.17\00:09:48.50 I also say to you that you are Peter, 00:09:48.51\00:09:50.66 and on this rock I will build My church, 00:09:50.67\00:09:52.82 and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 00:09:52.83\00:09:56.31 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, 00:09:56.32\00:09:58.76 whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, 00:09:58.77\00:10:01.95 whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 00:10:01.96\00:10:04.70 Then He commanded His disciples 00:10:04.71\00:10:06.25 that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Messiah." 00:10:06.26\00:10:09.58 Okay, in the light of the background 00:10:09.59\00:10:12.22 that we just described. 00:10:12.23\00:10:14.38 Jesus decides to go, 00:10:14.39\00:10:15.85 He says to the district of Caesarea Philippi. 00:10:15.86\00:10:20.48 Philippi. Okay, let us explain a little bit 00:10:20.49\00:10:21.76 about this territory, this is very important. 00:10:21.77\00:10:24.57 You know, Herod the great the one who tried 00:10:24.58\00:10:26.91 to kill Jesus when He was born. 00:10:26.92\00:10:29.36 After his death because of his bad reputation 00:10:29.37\00:10:33.31 that Herod had the Romans 00:10:33.32\00:10:34.99 did not want to appoint one of his sons 00:10:35.00\00:10:38.35 to be the ruler of entire Palestine as Herod was. 00:10:38.36\00:10:42.34 They actually divide Palestine into three major 00:10:42.35\00:10:45.78 parts in among his three sons. 00:10:45.79\00:10:49.52 So we have Archelaus who was there in Judea. 00:10:49.53\00:10:54.07 He very soon was replaced by procreators. 00:10:54.08\00:10:59.28 Then there Galilee was actually--he's oldest, 00:10:59.29\00:11:04.71 second oldest son which was Herod Antipas. 00:11:04.72\00:11:07.57 This is the one that we just read in verse 14. 00:11:07.58\00:11:10.70 But there is the third you know, 00:11:10.71\00:11:11.98 who killed John the Baptist but the third son 00:11:11.99\00:11:14.96 which was Herod Phillip. 00:11:14.97\00:11:16.58 He was completely there on the territory of modern Syria. 00:11:16.59\00:11:19.50 He was in that territory. 00:11:19.51\00:11:22.08 He was completely different person 00:11:22.09\00:11:24.49 from the rest of Herod's. 00:11:24.50\00:11:25.73 He was very peaceful ruler. 00:11:25.74\00:11:28.60 So many times I mean several times 00:11:28.61\00:11:31.37 when Jesus experienced threat, 00:11:31.38\00:11:35.05 when Jesus needed some rest, to rest in peace. 00:11:35.06\00:11:40.08 Jesus would go here to this territory to little bit relax. 00:11:40.09\00:11:44.07 Jesus needed some times you know for Himself. 00:11:44.08\00:11:48.45 And that's evidently reason 00:11:48.46\00:11:51.22 in view of the threat all around Jesus. 00:11:51.23\00:11:53.86 Jesus decided to go there to Caesarea Philippi 00:11:53.87\00:11:59.07 to be alone with His disciples 00:11:59.08\00:12:01.74 there to spend some restful time there. 00:12:01.75\00:12:04.04 And this question that He asked the disciples. 00:12:04.05\00:12:06.33 Who do you say that I am? 00:12:06.34\00:12:07.42 I know, I know for me personally 00:12:07.43\00:12:08.73 that was probably the greatest life question, 00:12:08.74\00:12:11.86 I've to think through. 00:12:11.87\00:12:13.45 As a young man I remember pondering who is Jesus? 00:12:13.46\00:12:18.26 Is He God? Is He who he says He is? 00:12:18.27\00:12:21.95 Do I believe His word? 00:12:21.96\00:12:23.58 This is the essential question. 00:12:23.59\00:12:25.24 Is there enough evidence to accept Him as my Savior? 00:12:25.25\00:12:27.90 And the disciples had to go on record. 00:12:27.91\00:12:29.81 And of course, Peter speaks up. 00:12:29.82\00:12:31.94 Yeah, you say, who the people would say that I am. 00:12:31.95\00:12:36.06 We saw Herod said, he's the John the Baptist. 00:12:36.07\00:12:38.78 Other people you know, they said some of the prophets. 00:12:38.79\00:12:42.35 But then Jesus says to His disciples 00:12:42.36\00:12:43.92 this is what the people say about me. 00:12:43.93\00:12:46.86 But what do you really? 00:12:46.87\00:12:48.46 Keep in mind, we are now approaching 00:12:48.47\00:12:50.93 to those final days of Jesus' ministry. 00:12:50.94\00:12:54.41 We will see that verse 21. 00:12:54.42\00:12:57.47 It's actually the point from which Jesus 00:12:57.48\00:13:00.44 is now going to Jerusalem to die. 00:13:00.45\00:13:01.81 Just we are talking about the last few weeks 00:13:01.82\00:13:03.94 of Jesus' ministry. Keep in mind. 00:13:03.95\00:13:06.31 Jesus is about to die. 00:13:06.32\00:13:09.13 After His death there is ascension to heaven. 00:13:09.14\00:13:12.80 Jesus will leave His disciples. 00:13:12.81\00:13:14.69 The disciples are supposed to continue His ministry, 00:13:14.70\00:13:18.31 so that Jesus want to be clear 00:13:18.32\00:13:21.64 with them that they know who He is. 00:13:21.65\00:13:24.52 So He's asking them. 00:13:24.53\00:13:26.33 So what do you say, that I am? 00:13:26.34\00:13:28.57 No, it's not enough just to say, 00:13:28.58\00:13:31.16 Jesus was a good man. 00:13:31.17\00:13:32.84 He was a great teacher as Jesus 00:13:32.85\00:13:35.74 was something more than a good man, 00:13:35.75\00:13:38.08 something more than what a teacher is. 00:13:38.09\00:13:40.99 And the question that Jesus asked His disciples, 00:13:41.00\00:13:43.85 He's asking to each one of us today. 00:13:43.86\00:13:45.86 Exactly and the answer you were the Christ, Messiah. 00:13:45.87\00:13:49.13 What do you say that I am? 00:13:49.14\00:13:50.75 Doesn't matter what other people say. 00:13:50.76\00:13:52.19 Is it your conviction? What do you say that I am? 00:13:52.20\00:13:54.95 And this word, Christ meaning messiah, 00:13:54.96\00:13:56.81 the son of a living God. 00:13:56.82\00:13:58.18 So Peter gives a good answer. 00:13:58.19\00:13:59.89 Yes. It's a great answer. 00:13:59.90\00:14:01.91 I want to hear what Jesus has to say about Peter's answer. 00:14:01.92\00:14:04.31 We're gonna be right back after a break to explore 00:14:04.32\00:14:06.59 one of the most important passages 00:14:06.60\00:14:08.67 in this section of Mathew. 00:14:08.68\00:14:10.00 We'll be right back after the break. 00:14:10.01\00:14:11.47
