Welcome back. We're exploring Matthew Chapter 14, 00:00:01.01\00:00:03.63 in the book of the Bible series here. 00:00:03.64\00:00:05.63 Ranko, we've talked about Jesus' compassion 00:00:05.64\00:00:07.52 for the multitudes, but He also cared about individuals. 00:00:07.53\00:00:10.91 Yes. Actually we already mentioned before the disciples 00:00:10.92\00:00:15.29 was very strange bunch of people. 00:00:15.30\00:00:18.46 They all had different issues and problems. 00:00:18.47\00:00:20.50 Their main interest was who will be 00:00:20.51\00:00:21.97 the first in the kingdom of God, et cetera, 00:00:21.98\00:00:24.50 and what the kind of patience, Jesus show towards them. 00:00:24.51\00:00:28.29 And it is actually the love of Jesus 00:00:28.30\00:00:31.27 that transformed their lives and these bunch of people, 00:00:31.28\00:00:34.91 I mean...It's-- they are actually 00:00:34.92\00:00:39.84 the core of the Christian church, 00:00:39.85\00:00:41.04 the foundation of the Christian church. 00:00:41.05\00:00:42.73 They are a lot like us 00:00:42.74\00:00:43.92 with their problems and their issues. 00:00:43.93\00:00:45.32 And we have the story of Peter, 00:00:45.33\00:00:47.11 who--a very familiar story who is drowning 00:00:47.12\00:00:50.41 and he cries out Lord save me. 00:00:50.42\00:00:52.74 Ranko, does God ever ignore that cry, Lord saved me? 00:00:52.75\00:00:57.02 Oh, I can say about my personal life, 00:00:57.03\00:01:00.57 how many times I was sinking. 00:01:00.58\00:01:02.69 And it was by my fault. 00:01:04.89\00:01:08.30 And when I cried to God, the Lord helped me, boy, 00:01:08.31\00:01:11.55 he's always, he's always there. 00:01:11.56\00:01:14.19 He hears the prayers of God's people. 00:01:14.20\00:01:16.68 And I would like to tell the viewers, 00:01:16.69\00:01:20.21 whatever your problem in life is, 00:01:20.22\00:01:22.89 that whatever that sinking means for you, 00:01:22.90\00:01:26.26 when you turn to God-- Yes. 00:01:26.27\00:01:27.96 And you ask for help, believe me your prayer 00:01:27.97\00:01:30.86 will not be left unanswered. Amen. 00:01:30.87\00:01:33.87 That's the God we serve. 00:01:33.88\00:01:35.48 Let's go on to Chapter 15, Ranko. 00:01:35.49\00:01:38.27 Let's explore a little bit the central issue 00:01:38.28\00:01:40.84 seems to be issues of tradition, 00:01:40.85\00:01:42.71 defilement, and so forth. 00:01:42.72\00:01:44.50 Help us understand that. 00:01:44.51\00:01:45.87 Actually it is interesting what just happened 00:01:45.88\00:01:48.10 just prior to that is Jesus feeds 5,000 people 00:01:48.11\00:01:53.93 with few loaves of bread and little fish. 00:01:53.94\00:01:57.09 If I'm there, I would really say, 00:01:57.10\00:02:01.08 this is demonstration of God's power. Yeah. 00:02:01.09\00:02:03.84 But you remember we were talking about the Pharisees. 00:02:03.85\00:02:07.26 They were breaking their relationship 00:02:07.27\00:02:08.60 with the Holy Spirit. 00:02:08.61\00:02:09.68 They were sinking deeper and deeper in their unbelief. 00:02:09.69\00:02:13.82 They're not looking about miracle of Jesus 00:02:13.83\00:02:15.87 as demonstration of that divine power. 00:02:15.88\00:02:19.41 They try to find something else. 00:02:19.42\00:02:21.31 So I would like you learn, if you can read from verse 1 00:02:21.32\00:02:23.93 as long as you can, then we will talk about that. Okay. 00:02:23.94\00:02:27.56 Its evidence that every part of God's revelation 00:02:27.57\00:02:30.91 through Jesus they're resistant. 00:02:30.92\00:02:32.32 They're resistant, yes. 00:02:32.33\00:02:34.33 Matthew Chapter 15 verse 1. 00:02:34.34\00:02:36.45 "Then the scribes and Pharisees, 00:02:36.46\00:02:37.82 who were from Jerusalem, came to Jesus saying, 00:02:37.83\00:02:40.39 why do your disciples transgress 00:02:40.40\00:02:42.77 the tradition of the elders? 00:02:42.78\00:02:44.84 For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread." 00:02:44.85\00:02:47.46 Glenn, can I interrupt you here for a while. 00:02:47.47\00:02:50.00 I don't know is the simply speculations, 00:02:50.01\00:02:52.45 but their belief is based on the reality. 00:02:52.46\00:02:54.47 When did the Pharisees see that disciples 00:02:54.48\00:02:59.50 eating with unwashed bread? 00:02:59.51\00:03:00.76 I believe it was a death miracle. 00:03:00.77\00:03:02.99 You remember that Jesus broke the bread, 00:03:03.00\00:03:04.91 gave to the disciples they had to distribute to people 00:03:04.92\00:03:07.05 and they were eating there, I believe, 00:03:07.06\00:03:09.04 I believe that this is a reflection, 00:03:09.05\00:03:10.61 maybe I'm wrong but I see strong connection here. 00:03:10.62\00:03:13.98 They don't look what Jesus was doing, 00:03:13.99\00:03:16.24 what God was doing for those people. 00:03:16.25\00:03:18.19 They were interested in something else, 00:03:18.20\00:03:19.97 and this is very, very sad situation. 00:03:19.98\00:03:21.70 You've got a strong point. 00:03:21.71\00:03:22.70 There's always someone to criticize your miracle. 00:03:22.71\00:03:24.60 Of course, of course. All right. 00:03:24.61\00:03:26.51 He said to them, "Why do you also transgress 00:03:26.52\00:03:29.42 the commandments of God, because of your tradition. 00:03:29.43\00:03:32.00 For God commanded, saying, 00:03:32.01\00:03:33.67 Honor your father and your mother, 00:03:33.68\00:03:35.67 and He who curseth his father and mother, 00:03:35.68\00:03:38.12 let him be put to death. 00:03:38.13\00:03:39.62 But you say, whoever says to his mother or father, 00:03:39.63\00:03:42.66 whatever profit you might have received 00:03:42.67\00:03:44.39 from me is a gift to God. 00:03:44.40\00:03:46.61 Then he need not honor his father and mother. 00:03:46.62\00:03:49.49 Thus you have made the commandment of God 00:03:49.50\00:03:51.47 of no effect by your tradition." 00:03:51.48\00:03:55.24 Until verse-- Hypocrites. 00:03:55.25\00:03:57.12 Well did Isaiah prophesy about you saying, 00:03:57.13\00:03:59.15 "These people draw near to me with their mouth, 00:03:59.16\00:04:02.30 and honor me with their lips, 00:04:02.31\00:04:03.96 but their heart is far from me and in vain they worship me, 00:04:03.97\00:04:07.20 teaching as doctrines the commandments of men." 00:04:07.21\00:04:10.35 When he had called the multitude to Himself, 00:04:10.36\00:04:13.36 he said to them, "hear and understand, 00:04:13.37\00:04:16.24 not what goes into the mouth defiles a man, 00:04:16.25\00:04:18.53 but what comes out of the mouth, 00:04:18.54\00:04:19.90 and this defiles a man." 00:04:19.91\00:04:21.81 Then His disciples came and said to Him, 00:04:21.82\00:04:24.00 "Do You know that the Pharisees were offended 00:04:24.01\00:04:26.36 when they heard these sayings?" 00:04:26.37\00:04:27.71 But He answered and said, 00:04:27.72\00:04:29.22 "Every plant which my Father has planted will be uprooted-- 00:04:29.23\00:04:32.09 has not planted will be uprooted. 00:04:32.10\00:04:34.12 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. 00:04:34.13\00:04:37.81 And if the blind leads the blind 00:04:37.82\00:04:39.38 both will fall into the ditch." Until verse 20. 00:04:39.39\00:04:42.97 Then Peter answered and said to Him, 00:04:42.98\00:04:44.52 "Explain this miracle to us." 00:04:44.53\00:04:46.77 Excuse me this parable, back to the parables again. 00:04:46.78\00:04:49.90 So Jesus said, "Are you also still without understanding? 00:04:49.91\00:04:54.25 Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth 00:04:54.26\00:04:56.78 goes into the stomach and is eliminated, 00:04:56.79\00:04:58.61 but those things which come out of the mouth 00:04:58.62\00:05:01.18 and come from the heart, they defile a man. 00:05:01.19\00:05:04.42 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, 00:05:04.43\00:05:07.34 murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, 00:05:07.35\00:05:10.02 false witness, and blasphemies. 00:05:10.03\00:05:12.23 These are the things which defile a man, 00:05:12.24\00:05:14.71 but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man." 00:05:14.72\00:05:18.45 Okay, we have here very interesting episode 00:05:18.46\00:05:22.49 from the life of Jesus. 00:05:22.50\00:05:24.22 And unfortunately many Christians 00:05:24.23\00:05:26.35 are taking these episodes 00:05:26.36\00:05:28.19 they're joining these with very similar 00:05:28.20\00:05:30.93 from Mark Chapter 7, and Mark has one sentence 00:05:30.94\00:05:34.60 that he added that his own interpretation there, 00:05:34.61\00:05:37.48 they put it together to show how the coming of Jesus. 00:05:37.49\00:05:40.94 And his instructions the commandment 00:05:40.95\00:05:42.66 that Jesus gave actually Christians 00:05:42.67\00:05:45.18 are allowed to eat everything and that the dietary laws 00:05:45.19\00:05:48.84 of the Old Testament were abolished by Jesus. 00:05:48.85\00:05:52.45 Unfortunately such an interpretation 00:05:52.46\00:05:55.49 is not supported by the texts. 00:05:55.50\00:05:58.18 So in order to understand 00:05:58.19\00:05:59.27 what is going there in the text, 00:05:59.28\00:06:01.02 we have to analyze the parable, 00:06:01.03\00:06:03.21 what was the problem? 00:06:03.22\00:06:04.81 The Pharisees were watching the disciples, 00:06:04.82\00:06:08.29 how they were eating, so there was a food there, 00:06:08.30\00:06:10.96 they would come from outside, they are in the room. 00:06:10.97\00:06:13.65 They would grab the food and eat it. 00:06:13.66\00:06:16.27 Keep in mind. 00:06:16.28\00:06:17.60 According to the Jewish practice and their law, 00:06:17.61\00:06:22.21 Pharisaic Law, the disciples were supposed 00:06:22.22\00:06:25.34 first to wash their hands. 00:06:25.35\00:06:29.06 And let's clarify this is not an issue 00:06:29.07\00:06:30.53 about cleanliness here. This is about religious defile. 00:06:30.54\00:06:33.48 And we know that before we eat, 00:06:33.49\00:06:35.86 we have to wash our hands. 00:06:35.87\00:06:37.02 For sanitation but not for holiness. 00:06:37.03\00:06:38.66 But it is not about that. 00:06:38.67\00:06:40.37 It's very important to understand 00:06:40.38\00:06:41.99 what is washing meant? 00:06:42.00\00:06:43.08 You know, according to the Pharisaic rule, 00:06:43.09\00:06:45.91 you would put just in small container 00:06:45.92\00:06:48.63 just small like this, you would put water, 00:06:48.64\00:06:51.35 this we are talking about. 00:06:51.36\00:06:53.19 And then you would take it, you would put, 00:06:53.20\00:06:56.10 your hands like this and pour out the water 00:06:56.11\00:06:58.76 just a little bit, just a small amount of water, 00:06:58.77\00:07:00.98 it's not about washing. 00:07:00.99\00:07:02.48 You have to get these, so that water will go down 00:07:02.49\00:07:05.92 and that's spiritual uncleanness 00:07:05.93\00:07:07.54 would be washed from your hands going down. 00:07:07.55\00:07:10.19 And then you are ritually clean to eat, that water. 00:07:10.20\00:07:13.56 We are not dealing here with hygiene. 00:07:13.57\00:07:16.71 We are not dealing here about something 00:07:16.72\00:07:18.29 that today are, you know, 00:07:18.30\00:07:19.77 parents are teaching their children. 00:07:19.78\00:07:21.27 We are dealing with ritual that people established 00:07:21.28\00:07:25.56 and now the Pharisees are criticizing Jesus 00:07:25.57\00:07:28.99 that his disciples were eating 00:07:29.00\00:07:31.86 with those ritually unclean hands. 00:07:31.87\00:07:34.82 But there is something interesting 00:07:34.83\00:07:36.00 that Jesus points here, He says, 00:07:36.01\00:07:37.87 "You are criticizing My disciples 00:07:37.88\00:07:40.54 they are breaking the tradition, 00:07:40.55\00:07:42.34 at the same time you are breaking the law of God, 00:07:42.35\00:07:47.28 because of your tradition." 00:07:47.29\00:07:49.06 And Jesus is using here 00:07:49.07\00:07:51.02 a practical example of what they did. 00:07:51.03\00:07:53.35 The person would make-- 00:07:53.36\00:08:00.40 had the duty to support his parents, 00:08:00.41\00:08:03.78 he would take that money, bring to the church. 00:08:03.79\00:08:05.89 He would not support the parents 00:08:05.90\00:08:06.96 but because of the tradition that was not, 00:08:06.97\00:08:09.12 you know, against the law of God. 00:08:09.13\00:08:10.85 Yeah, let's catch that point. 00:08:10.86\00:08:12.76 Out of hardheadedness, they would pretend 00:08:12.77\00:08:15.07 they're giving to God what they should have done 00:08:15.08\00:08:17.15 to care for their parents. Yes. 00:08:17.16\00:08:19.29 So what was Jesus response is? 00:08:19.30\00:08:24.63 It does not defile the person what goes into our body, 00:08:24.64\00:08:28.44 what comes out of the body, 00:08:28.45\00:08:30.94 it's not there, it's here is. 00:08:30.95\00:08:33.94 Here Jesus is not talking about clean or unclean food. 00:08:33.95\00:08:38.10 The text makes very clear in verse 20, 00:08:38.11\00:08:41.07 the--verse 19 and 20, 00:08:41.08\00:08:43.71 "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, 00:08:43.72\00:08:46.12 murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, 00:08:46.13\00:08:49.92 false witness, slanders, these are the things 00:08:49.93\00:08:52.96 which defile the man," 00:08:52.97\00:08:54.34 but to eat with unwashed hands, 00:08:54.35\00:08:57.14 Jesus is not talking here about the dietary laws. 00:08:57.15\00:09:00.65 He's talking about the Jewish tradition 00:09:00.66\00:09:03.22 eating with unwashed hands. 00:09:03.23\00:09:05.81 Okay, if Jesus says this does not defile 00:09:05.82\00:09:08.57 the human beings, so this text cannot be taken, 00:09:08.58\00:09:11.39 you know, in support of any abolishment 00:09:11.40\00:09:14.11 of those dietary laws 00:09:14.12\00:09:15.73 that are so clearly specified there in the Old Testament. 00:09:15.74\00:09:19.74 So when Matthew quotes Isaiah and says, 00:09:19.75\00:09:23.89 "And in vain they worship me," 00:09:23.90\00:09:25.69 teaching his commandments, 00:09:25.70\00:09:28.10 teaching his doctrines and commandments of men, 00:09:28.11\00:09:30.12 he's really showing that their traditions, 00:09:30.13\00:09:32.60 their layers of rules were taking people away 00:09:32.61\00:09:37.33 from really following God. 00:09:37.34\00:09:38.80 Actually verse 18, what you are saying here, 00:09:38.81\00:09:41.19 Jesus says, where is that every plant--yeah, 00:09:41.20\00:09:47.27 verse 13, Jesus said, 00:09:47.28\00:09:50.26 "Every plant which My heavenly Father 00:09:50.27\00:09:54.17 did not plant shall be uprooted." 00:09:54.18\00:09:55.93 What is the plant that any tradition 00:09:55.94\00:09:58.14 that people established that is contrary to the law of God? 00:09:58.15\00:10:03.23 It did not come from God 00:10:03.24\00:10:05.09 and God will probably by the passing of the time, 00:10:05.10\00:10:07.99 God will make it obsolete and take away from people. 00:10:08.00\00:10:12.76 Glenn, can I ask you one question? 00:10:12.77\00:10:15.00 If we really here with the tradition, 00:10:15.01\00:10:16.96 is tradition important or not? 00:10:16.97\00:10:19.09 All of us have tradition, in fact, 00:10:19.10\00:10:21.08 good traditions are a blessing in our life. 00:10:21.09\00:10:23.07 Should the church have tradition? Sure. 00:10:23.08\00:10:25.60 So when we come to the church 00:10:25.61\00:10:28.01 and we begin first with singing hymns 00:10:28.02\00:10:32.05 and after that we kneel down and we pray, 00:10:32.06\00:10:35.29 that's, it's not in the Bible, we don't have such order, 00:10:35.30\00:10:38.28 is that important? Of course it is. 00:10:38.29\00:10:40.34 In most of our western part of the world, 00:10:40.35\00:10:42.59 we go to church 11 o'clock service, we call it. Sure. 00:10:42.60\00:10:45.27 Who decided 11 o'clock? 00:10:45.28\00:10:46.51 There's no scripture about that. 00:10:46.52\00:10:48.72 See, Glenn, tradition is important. Mm-hmm. 00:10:48.73\00:10:52.78 It comes from human experience 00:10:52.79\00:10:54.27 but the problem is when tradition becomes 00:10:54.28\00:10:58.05 the law of God and goes beyond the scriptures. 00:10:58.06\00:11:02.80 We know that many Christians in this world today, 00:11:02.81\00:11:05.72 they don't go to the Bible. 00:11:05.73\00:11:07.33 They simply try to find the answer to the question. 00:11:07.34\00:11:10.52 What we have been doing for centuries 00:11:10.53\00:11:12.86 and doing and we are breaking the law of God 00:11:12.87\00:11:15.98 because of our tradition is. 00:11:15.99\00:11:18.63 Jesus tried to tell us here, 00:11:18.64\00:11:20.71 the tradition will not save us, 00:11:20.72\00:11:23.07 it's only we stick to the law of God 00:11:23.08\00:11:25.12 and if we take what God said as the most important, 00:11:25.13\00:11:28.01 what the God says, the word of God 00:11:28.02\00:11:29.66 is the measure of everything 00:11:29.67\00:11:30.74 which we are doing in our lives. 00:11:30.75\00:11:32.27 By the way, we have the next text 00:11:32.28\00:11:33.56 that actually here follows. 00:11:33.57\00:11:34.91 The next story is such an amazing story. 00:11:34.92\00:11:37.64 It's especially close to me. 00:11:37.65\00:11:39.29 I grew up in the country of Lebanon, 00:11:39.30\00:11:40.95 which is where it takes place. 00:11:40.96\00:11:42.79 Uh, "Then Jesus went out from there 00:11:42.80\00:11:44.63 and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 00:11:44.64\00:11:46.69 And He meets a woman a Canaanite." 00:11:46.70\00:11:49.09 The Jews have been rejecting, 00:11:49.10\00:11:50.38 resisting many of the people of the Jews. 00:11:50.39\00:11:52.57 "But now a Canaanite woman comes 00:11:52.58\00:11:54.38 from the region says have mercy on me, 00:11:54.39\00:11:56.86 O Lord, Son of David." 00:11:56.87\00:11:58.27 What a sweet sound that must have been in His ears 00:11:58.28\00:12:00.65 to have someone who's recognizing Him. 00:12:00.66\00:12:02.71 "My daughter is severely demon-possessed." 00:12:02.72\00:12:04.86 But His response of shocking, tell us about it, Ranko. 00:12:04.87\00:12:07.67 Yes. Uh, it's so interesting is here 00:12:07.68\00:12:12.96 that this woman comes to Jesus, 00:12:12.97\00:12:15.30 she wants to have, you know, healing for her daughter, 00:12:15.31\00:12:18.13 but Jesus said, "I'm sent just for the lost sheep of Israel." 00:12:18.14\00:12:22.32 Evidently it was here the test of the faith of this woman 00:12:22.33\00:12:27.05 but what kind of faith she manifested here, 00:12:27.06\00:12:30.00 that actually it is through her faith 00:12:30.01\00:12:32.61 that she received the answer that Jesus gave to her 00:12:32.62\00:12:36.51 and what she was looking for, 00:12:36.52\00:12:38.67 finally she found the Jesus Christ. 00:12:38.68\00:12:39.92 The shock of her surprise when he responds this way. 00:12:39.93\00:12:43.73 There must have been something in His eyes, 00:12:43.74\00:12:45.32 something in His voice that gave her some hope. 00:12:45.33\00:12:47.85 That He is saying these prejudice things 00:12:47.86\00:12:50.11 that His disciples believe, 00:12:50.12\00:12:51.65 but there's something else that gave her hope. 00:12:51.66\00:12:53.55 She was put on by people as unclean, 00:12:53.56\00:12:57.04 she was an outcast. She was rejected. 00:12:57.05\00:13:00.06 But Jesus Christ never rejects anybody. 00:13:00.07\00:13:03.72 I would like to say to the viewers, 00:13:03.73\00:13:06.26 I don't know what and the way people look up on you 00:13:06.27\00:13:10.76 but praise God we have a wonderful savior 00:13:10.77\00:13:13.30 and we always find a great friend and savior in Him. 00:13:13.31\00:13:16.95
