It's always a joy to do ministry together. 00:01:35.93\00:01:38.41 And I can't wait to get into the scripture here. 00:01:38.42\00:01:40.83 Ranko, lead us in pray 00:01:40.84\00:01:42.09 that we may have God's guidance as we study. 00:01:42.10\00:01:45.72 "Our Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us 00:01:45.73\00:01:50.44 this wonderful Gospel written by disciple by name, Matthew. 00:01:50.45\00:01:58.01 Father, we are learning here about unique picture 00:01:58.02\00:02:01.14 of Jesus Christ and we want that Jesus who was then, 00:02:01.15\00:02:05.38 become our own savior now and today. 00:02:05.39\00:02:09.48 So please speak to us and give us the thoughts 00:02:09.49\00:02:13.04 that the Holy Spirit can impact 00:02:13.05\00:02:15.17 in understanding the life of Jesus Christ 00:02:15.18\00:02:18.16 and to understand how great savior He is to us today. 00:02:18.17\00:02:21.46 We pray all of this in His precious name, Amen." 00:02:21.47\00:02:25.54 Amen. Ranko, it's been a wonderful journey 00:02:25.55\00:02:28.41 so far in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:02:28.42\00:02:29.82 I'm looking forward to what God has for us this time. 00:02:29.83\00:02:32.67 Where are we in the story of Jesus? 00:02:32.68\00:02:36.61 You know, as we move through the Gospel of Matthew, 00:02:36.62\00:02:42.17 as he is portraying Jesus and His ministry of earth, 00:02:42.18\00:02:46.23 there is one thing that we have to keep in mind 00:02:46.24\00:02:50.29 that which is going on there with Jesus 00:02:50.30\00:02:52.47 and His ministry was a part of the great controversy. 00:02:52.48\00:02:56.68 Yes. That even started there in heaven 00:02:56.69\00:03:00.40 between God and Satan. 00:03:00.41\00:03:02.70 And Satan, he knew 00:03:02.71\00:03:05.68 that Jesus would one day come to this earth, 00:03:05.69\00:03:08.82 to his kingdom there, 00:03:08.83\00:03:10.22 he was waiting for that opportunity. 00:03:10.23\00:03:12.40 So we have everyday of Jesus ministry, 00:03:12.41\00:03:15.70 can I say even every minute of Jesus ministry, 00:03:15.71\00:03:18.58 was just under a scrutiny of Satan 00:03:18.59\00:03:22.52 and watch to prevent the Jesus ministry. 00:03:22.53\00:03:25.63 You know why Jesus came, to die? 00:03:25.64\00:03:28.02 To save his people from their sin. 00:03:28.03\00:03:30.18 And Satan was making a constant effort 00:03:30.19\00:03:33.66 how to prevent that ministry of Jesus 00:03:33.67\00:03:37.06 and the redemption that He wanted 00:03:37.07\00:03:38.60 to provide for human beings. 00:03:38.61\00:03:40.22 It is with that thought 00:03:40.23\00:03:41.37 that we are coming here to Chapter 14. 00:03:41.38\00:03:43.33 Doesn't that make His victory and sinlessness 00:03:43.34\00:03:46.84 so much more wonderful? Yes. 00:03:46.85\00:03:48.82 Because he's under such attack. 00:03:48.83\00:03:50.40 That attack is not only directly towards him, 00:03:50.41\00:03:52.59 it's directed towards others. 00:03:52.60\00:03:54.29 See, Glenn, first what Satan did, 00:03:54.30\00:03:58.47 he turned to Jewish leaders. That is why 00:03:58.48\00:04:01.84 Jewish nations are against Jesus. 00:04:01.85\00:04:04.39 When we go further on, 00:04:04.40\00:04:06.61 he tried even to use Jesus own family, 00:04:06.62\00:04:09.23 his brothers against Jesus. 00:04:09.24\00:04:11.04 He did everything, everything to prevent Jesus 00:04:11.05\00:04:13.95 and His ministry. 00:04:13.96\00:04:15.41 Now there is a very sad event that took place, 00:04:15.42\00:04:21.17 that really marks somehow a turning around 00:04:21.18\00:04:24.31 a point in Jesus ministry 00:04:24.32\00:04:26.49 and what was going on from this time on, 00:04:26.50\00:04:29.68 it's the death of John the Baptist. 00:04:29.69\00:04:32.36 So please I would really like to ask you, 00:04:32.37\00:04:34.60 if you can read Chapter 14, verses 1:12. 00:04:34.61\00:04:38.39 And we should remember that John the Baptist, 00:04:38.40\00:04:40.28 was one that had introduced Jesus. Introduced Jesus. 00:04:40.29\00:04:44.02 And prepared the way and is a relative. 00:04:44.03\00:04:47.90 "At that time Herod the Tetrarch heard 00:04:47.91\00:04:49.88 the reports about Jesus and said to his servants, 00:04:49.89\00:04:52.41 'This is John the Baptist, he has risen from the dead, 00:04:52.42\00:04:55.23 and therefore these powers are at work in him.' 00:04:55.24\00:04:58.74 For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, 00:04:58.75\00:05:01.20 and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, 00:05:01.21\00:05:03.26 his brother Philip's wife because John had said to him, 00:05:03.27\00:05:06.48 It is not lawful for you to have her. 00:05:06.49\00:05:09.11 And although he wanted to put him to death, 00:05:09.12\00:05:10.95 he feared the multitude, 00:05:10.96\00:05:12.80 because they counted him as a prophet. 00:05:12.81\00:05:15.46 But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, 00:05:15.47\00:05:17.28 the daughter of Herodias 00:05:17.29\00:05:19.01 danced before them and pleased Herod. 00:05:19.02\00:05:22.08 Therefore he promised with an oath 00:05:22.09\00:05:24.75 to give her whatever she might ask. 00:05:24.76\00:05:27.82 So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, 00:05:27.83\00:05:31.15 'give me John the Baptist's head on a platter.' 00:05:31.16\00:05:34.11 And the king was sorry, 00:05:34.12\00:05:35.60 Nevertheless because of the oath's 00:05:35.61\00:05:38.21 and because of those who sat with him, 00:05:38.22\00:05:40.36 he commanded it to be given to her. 00:05:40.37\00:05:42.41 So he sent and had John beheaded in prison, 00:05:42.42\00:05:45.47 and his head was brought on a platter 00:05:45.48\00:05:47.64 and given to the girl 00:05:47.65\00:05:49.11 and she brought it to her mother. 00:05:49.12\00:05:51.03 Then his disciples came and carried away the body 00:05:51.04\00:05:54.35 and buried it and they went and told Jesus." 00:05:54.36\00:05:57.53 What a terrible brutal tragedy! 00:05:57.54\00:06:00.42 Actually, the event that is portrayed here 00:06:00.43\00:06:04.62 is not only in the Gospels, 00:06:04.63\00:06:06.16 we know that the Jewish historian, Josephus, 00:06:06.17\00:06:09.09 actually he noticed this event. 00:06:09.10\00:06:11.20 When John the Baptist was beheaded, 00:06:11.21\00:06:14.41 actually the news spread throughout Galilee and Judea. 00:06:14.42\00:06:18.84 This was a very significant, significant event. 00:06:18.85\00:06:22.34 Herod, that is mentioned here, was Herod Agrippa, 00:06:22.35\00:06:27.78 Antipas, the son of Herod the great, 00:06:27.79\00:06:32.27 that notorious ruler that tried to kill Jesus, 00:06:32.28\00:06:35.39 you know by killing those children there in Bethlehem. 00:06:35.40\00:06:39.33 But evidently the Herod here 00:06:39.34\00:06:40.76 was nothing better than his father. 00:06:40.77\00:06:43.59 According to Josephus, 00:06:43.60\00:06:45.07 he was so much afraid of John the Baptist 00:06:45.08\00:06:47.89 because people were holding him as a prophet. 00:06:47.90\00:06:50.31 He was afraid for his throne 00:06:50.32\00:06:52.34 and evidently he tried to find any excuse 00:06:52.35\00:06:54.95 to kill the John the Baptist 00:06:54.96\00:06:56.33 and he took that opportunity and he killed John. 00:06:56.34\00:07:00.04 We see something of Jesus, 00:07:00.05\00:07:02.98 you referred a couple of lessons ago 00:07:02.99\00:07:04.81 about Jesus compassion. 00:07:04.82\00:07:06.48 How does He respond to this sad news? 00:07:06.49\00:07:11.27 Actually, there is one phrase to tell us everything in, 00:07:11.28\00:07:15.83 in verse 13, the first phrase. 00:07:15.84\00:07:19.36 "When Jesus heard of it, he departed from there." 00:07:19.37\00:07:22.24 Where did he go? 00:07:22.25\00:07:23.73 "By boat to a deserted place by Himself." 00:07:23.74\00:07:27.19 Far away from everybody. 00:07:27.20\00:07:29.64 Evidently, in the death of John the Baptist, 00:07:29.65\00:07:33.65 Jesus saw a precursor of His own death. 00:07:33.66\00:07:39.74 Jesus saw that His ministry very, 00:07:39.75\00:07:42.18 very soon will come to its end. 00:07:42.19\00:07:44.66 By the way, from this point on, 00:07:44.67\00:07:46.42 very short time passed until the time of Jesus death. 00:07:46.43\00:07:50.18 Even though, I think the viewers 00:07:50.19\00:07:53.04 should not be confused with the fact 00:07:53.05\00:07:54.58 that we have how many more than 10 Chapters, 00:07:54.59\00:07:56.79 14 Chapters up to that point is. 00:07:56.80\00:07:58.37 This is not the time indication here, 00:07:58.38\00:08:00.90 we just start talking about short time 00:08:00.91\00:08:02.75 from this point on until Jesus was-- 00:08:02.76\00:08:04.39 Few months. And Jesus was very much 00:08:04.40\00:08:07.01 concerned about his own ministry and what will happen 00:08:07.02\00:08:10.66 and can you imagine, we are dealing here 00:08:10.67\00:08:12.62 with a human nature of Christ, 00:08:12.63\00:08:15.29 concern that He had, 00:08:15.30\00:08:16.64 He rendered to the secluded place there, 00:08:16.65\00:08:19.01 where nobody was there to contemplate 00:08:19.02\00:08:21.31 about the future of his ministry 00:08:21.32\00:08:23.24 and what will happen to Him in the last day 00:08:23.25\00:08:25.20 of His ministry when He has to die on the cross. 00:08:25.21\00:08:27.64 And we could pause and be very aware 00:08:27.65\00:08:29.42 that we may need to do the same thing 00:08:29.43\00:08:31.46 when bad news comes when we hear of sorrows. 00:08:31.47\00:08:35.63 We just need to come away sometime. 00:08:35.64\00:08:37.67 Just yesterday, I got news 00:08:37.68\00:08:38.95 that a friend of mine had passed away 00:08:38.96\00:08:40.71 half way around the world, 00:08:40.72\00:08:42.22 I need to spend just a little time with God, 00:08:42.23\00:08:44.56 there's sometimes when we just got to tell Jesus 00:08:44.57\00:08:46.81 because no one else understands. 00:08:46.82\00:08:48.66 Jesus Himself went 00:08:48.67\00:08:50.68 to His Father to be alone with Him. 00:08:50.69\00:08:52.96 But Glenn, Jesus went to the seclude place 00:08:52.97\00:08:57.57 but there is something very interesting that I notice. 00:08:57.58\00:09:01.01 What do we have in the rest of verse 13? 00:09:01.02\00:09:04.75 Was he, was he alone there? 00:09:04.76\00:09:06.52 "But when the multitude heard it, 00:09:06.53\00:09:08.21 they followed Him on foot from the cities. 00:09:08.22\00:09:10.69 And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude, 00:09:10.70\00:09:13.65 He was moved with compassion." 00:09:13.66\00:09:15.60 Even his grieving is interrupted. 00:09:15.61\00:09:17.64 So can you imagine, did Jesus say 00:09:17.65\00:09:19.74 please leave Me alone, 00:09:19.75\00:09:22.01 you know, I need to be by Myself, 00:09:22.02\00:09:25.45 I have issues and problems. 00:09:25.46\00:09:27.70 Can you imagine? 00:09:27.71\00:09:28.71 What is the expression for compassion, 00:09:28.72\00:09:31.97 His inner organs were moved. 00:09:31.98\00:09:36.60 So that the worry and care about Himself 00:09:36.61\00:09:39.80 disappear from Jesus because the needs of the people 00:09:39.81\00:09:43.24 were much more important 00:09:43.25\00:09:45.13 than His own situation in which He was. 00:09:45.14\00:09:47.93 Boy I learned something from this. 00:09:47.94\00:09:49.34 What a heart of love. 00:09:49.35\00:09:50.39 So many times we, as Christians, 00:09:50.40\00:09:53.70 we are so much concerned about ourselves, 00:09:53.71\00:09:56.47 we are concerned about our own situations, 00:09:56.48\00:09:59.48 about own problem and we find it as excuse 00:09:59.49\00:10:02.36 why we do not, you know, 00:10:02.37\00:10:04.02 carry the witness about Christ to others as 00:10:04.03\00:10:07.97 after learning about Jesus Christ, 00:10:07.98\00:10:09.64 is the needs of others are much important 00:10:09.65\00:10:12.73 than our own needs 00:10:12.74\00:10:14.40 and when we show compassion toward others, 00:10:14.41\00:10:17.28 it effects our inner spiritual life here. 00:10:17.29\00:10:20.29 But there is something else, 00:10:20.30\00:10:21.76 I'm sorry for interrupting you. 00:10:21.77\00:10:22.87 No, no, please. 00:10:22.88\00:10:24.12 Not only that Jesus was not alone 00:10:24.13\00:10:25.80 with reference with the people, 00:10:25.81\00:10:27.68 keep in mind, you can go to the secluded place 00:10:27.69\00:10:30.76 and if you think, you are alone 00:10:30.77\00:10:32.09 but you are not alone, who is there? 00:10:32.10\00:10:34.30 Is the devil. The devil--the devil never, 00:10:34.31\00:10:39.77 never left Jesus by ourselves. 00:10:39.78\00:10:41.82 So what happened, people were hungry there, 00:10:41.83\00:10:45.05 Jesus showed compassion 00:10:45.06\00:10:46.48 and we know that he fed 5,000 people 00:10:46.49\00:10:49.65 with few loafs of bread and fish. 00:10:49.66\00:10:53.72 Okay. The Christians usually are familiar with this story 00:10:53.73\00:10:58.47 but then comes verse 22. 00:10:58.48\00:11:01.02 What do we have in verse 22? 00:11:01.03\00:11:02.63 "Immediately Jesus made His disciple 00:11:02.64\00:11:04.35 get into the boat 00:11:04.36\00:11:05.42 and go before Him to the other side, 00:11:05.43\00:11:07.48 while he sent the multitudes away." That's surprise. 00:11:07.49\00:11:10.16 He's just had this incredible meal, 00:11:10.17\00:11:12.22 tremendous response, 00:11:12.23\00:11:13.94 what a response that people must have had! 00:11:13.95\00:11:16.48 Okay, Glenn, if people are hungry 00:11:16.49\00:11:20.71 and I feed them, 00:11:20.72\00:11:22.19 isn't that not an opportunity to open the word of God 00:11:22.20\00:11:26.16 and to teach those people 00:11:26.17\00:11:27.29 and now because they see a miracle 00:11:27.30\00:11:29.71 that's so receptive, why suddenly, 00:11:29.72\00:11:32.58 actually Matthew different then Mark, 00:11:32.59\00:11:36.73 hardly uses the word 'immediately'. Mm-hmm. 00:11:36.74\00:11:40.72 When he uses the word immediately, it's immediately, 00:11:40.73\00:11:43.47 there is something that happened, 00:11:43.48\00:11:45.98 that prompted Jesus to tell His disciples 00:11:45.99\00:11:48.50 go there to the boat, 00:11:48.51\00:11:49.51 let swim the other side of lake, 00:11:49.52\00:11:50.88 leading people, why? 00:11:50.89\00:11:54.51 There was something to do with the response of the people. 00:11:54.52\00:11:57.14 The people. And then we have 00:11:57.15\00:11:59.03 through the Gospel of John Chapter 6 00:11:59.04\00:12:00.95 to find explanation, 00:12:00.96\00:12:02.09 Matthew does not talk, talk about that. 00:12:02.10\00:12:04.30 And when we read the Gospel of Matthew, 00:12:04.31\00:12:06.82 when people saw the miracle that Jesus did, 00:12:06.83\00:12:09.90 they said, this is the kind of a king that we need, 00:12:09.91\00:12:14.24 we will not work, we will arrest 00:12:14.25\00:12:16.59 and He will provide food, food for us. 00:12:16.60\00:12:19.38 Let us make Him the king 00:12:19.39\00:12:21.82 and all our economic problems will be solved. 00:12:21.83\00:12:25.48 Actually it is at that moment that Jesus recognized 00:12:25.49\00:12:29.37 the effort of Satan to prevent Him 00:12:29.38\00:12:32.88 to go to the cross 00:12:32.89\00:12:34.97 and to accomplish His mission in an easy way. 00:12:34.98\00:12:37.99 Do you remember? Very similar 00:12:38.00\00:12:39.20 to what he tried to do with Jesus 00:12:39.21\00:12:41.42 with those first three temptations. 00:12:41.43\00:12:44.20 And you see, Jesus need not succumb 00:12:44.21\00:12:46.26 to that popular demand, 00:12:46.27\00:12:48.32 Jesus recognized here an effort of Satan 00:12:48.33\00:12:51.22 to prevent Him to go to the cross 00:12:51.23\00:12:53.88 and immediately Jesus departed from that place. 00:12:53.89\00:12:57.27 Actually God always succeed, God is always victor, 00:12:57.28\00:13:01.09 God always, always wins 00:13:01.10\00:13:02.74 and Satan's plan at this moment failed completely. 00:13:02.75\00:13:07.68 They wanted to make Messiah a king 00:13:07.69\00:13:09.36 but they didn't understand. 00:13:09.37\00:13:11.22 Jesus has to redefine their understanding of Messiah 00:13:11.23\00:13:14.65 and to redefine their understanding of the Kingdom. 00:13:14.66\00:13:17.53 Because imagine, if they could have a leader 00:13:17.54\00:13:19.20 who would feed them and clothe them 00:13:19.21\00:13:21.46 and raise them from, do all these things, 00:13:21.47\00:13:23.41 they could overcome any army, 00:13:23.42\00:13:24.70 they could finally have their national state again. 00:13:24.71\00:13:27.38 But you know, Jesus went to another place, 00:13:27.39\00:13:31.29 then people come there to visit Jesus. 00:13:31.30\00:13:34.84 Again Jesus shows the compassion. 00:13:34.85\00:13:36.77 Jesus is always there to help people. 00:13:36.78\00:13:38.96 Boy, what kind of Jesus Christ 00:13:38.97\00:13:41.86 is present in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:13:41.87\00:13:43.58 Jesus who really cares about the needs of people. 00:13:43.59\00:13:46.48 He does not look at our mistakes that we made. 00:13:46.49\00:13:50.75 Sometimes our ill intensions that we make, 00:13:50.76\00:13:54.01 really Jesus looks deep there in our heart, 00:13:54.02\00:13:56.99 He sees our needs and He cares for us. 00:13:57.00\00:14:00.23 We're gonna learn a lot more 00:14:00.24\00:14:01.35 about the compassion of Jesus 00:14:01.36\00:14:02.85 in just a moment right after a break. 00:14:02.86\00:14:04.58 We'll be right back. 00:14:04.59\00:14:05.89
